Here we report on Landau level spectroscopy in magnetic fields up to 34 T performed on a thin film of topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_3$ epitaxially grown on a BaF$_2$ substrate. The observed response is consistent with the picture of a direct-gap semiconductor in which charge carriers closely resemble massive Dirac particles. The fundamental band gap reaches $E_g=(175\pm 5)$~meV at low temperatures and it is not located on the trigonal axis, thus displaying either six or twelvefold valley degeneracy. Notably, our magneto-optical data do not indicate any band inversion. This suggests that the fundamental band gap is relatively distant from the $Γ$ point where profound inversion exists andgives rise to relativistic-like surface states of Bi$_2$Te$_3$.
X-band microwave spectroscopy is applied to study the cyclotron resonance in Bi2Te3 exposed to ambient conditions. With its help, intraband transitions between Landau levels of relativistic fermions are observed. The Fermi velocity equals to 3260 m/s, which is much lower than has been reported in the literature for samples cleaved in vacuum. Simultaneous observation of bulk Shubnikov - de Haas oscillations by contactless microwave spectroscopy allows determination of the Fermi level position. Occupation of topological surface states depends not only on bulk Fermi level but also on the surface …
Optical excitations of BiTeI with large Rashba spin splitting have been studied in an external magnetic field ($B$) applied parallel to the polar axis. A sequence of transitions between the Landau levels (LLs), whose energies are in proportion to $\sqrt{B}$ were observed, being characteristic of massless Dirac electrons. The large separation energy between the LLs makes it possible to detect the strongest cyclotron resonance even at room temperature in moderate fields. Unlike in 2D Dirac systems, the magnetic field induced rearrangement of the conductivity spectrum is directly observed.
We present a magneto-infrared spectroscopy study on a newly identified three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetal ZrTe$_5$. We observe clear transitions between Landau levels and their further splitting under magnetic field. Both the sequence of transitions and their field dependence follow quantitatively the relation expected for 3D \emph{massless} Dirac fermions. The measurement also reveals an exceptionally low magnetic field needed to drive the compound into its quantum limit, demonstrating that ZrTe$_5$ is an extremely clean system and ideal platform for studying 3D Dirac fermions. The splitt…
We report on an infrared magneto-spectroscopy study of Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Se, a topological crystalline insulator. We have examined a set of samples, all in the inverted regime of electronic bands, with the tin composition varying from $x=0.2$ to $0.33$. Our analysis shows that the observed response, composed of a series of interband inter-Landau level excitations, can be interpreted and modelled using the relativistic-like Hamiltonian for three-dimensional massive Dirac electrons, expanded to include diagonal quadratic terms that impose band inversion. In our data, we have not found any clear si…
We demonstrate that surface relaxation, which is insignificant in trilayer graphene, starts to manifest in Bernal-stacked tetralayer graphene. Bernal-stacked few-layer graphene has been investigated by analyzing its Landau level spectra through quantum capacitance measurements. We find that in trilayer graphene, the interlayer interaction parameters were similar to that of graphite. However, in tetralayer graphene, the hopping parameters between the bulk and surface bilayers are quite different. This shows a direct evidence for the surface relaxation phenomena. In spite of the fact that the Va…
Precise infrared magnetotransmission experiments have been performed in magnetic fields up to 32 T on a series of multilayer epitaxial graphene samples. We observe changes in the spectral features and broadening of the main cyclotron transition when the incoming photon energy is in resonance with the lowest Landau level separation and the energy of a K point optical phonon. We have developed a theory that explains and quantitatively reproduces the frequency and magnetic field dependence of the phenomenon as the absorption of a photon together with the simultaneous creation of an intervalley, i…
The electron-hole symmetry in graphene monolayer, which is analogous to the inherent symmetric structure between electrons and positrons of the Universe, plays a crucial role in the chirality and chiral tunnelling of massless Dirac fermions. Here we demonstrate that both strain and charged-defect scattering could break this symmetry dramatically in graphene monolayer. In our experiment, the Fermi velocities of electrons and holes are measured directly through Landau level spectroscopy. In strained graphene with lattice deformation and curvature, the and are measured as 1.2 x 106 m/s and 1.02 x…
Using low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we probe the Landau levels of the topologically protected state of Sb2Te3(0001) after in-situ cleavage of a single crystal. Landau levels are visible for magnetic fields B > 2 T at energies, which confirm the Dirac type dispersion including the zeroth Landau level. We find different Dirac velocities for the lower and the upper part of the Dirac cone in reasonable agreement with previous density functional theory data. The Dirac point deduced from the zeroth Landau level shifts by about 40 meV between different areas of the sample indicatin…
Far infrared transmission experiments are performed on ultrathin epitaxial graphite samples in a magnetic field. The observed cyclotron resonance-like and electron-positron-like transitions are in excellent agreement with the expectations of a single-particle model of Dirac fermions in graphene, with an effective velocity of c* = 1.03 x 10^6 m/s.
Tunneling measurements on 2D electron gases at high magnetic field reveal a qualitative difference between the two spin sublevels of the lowest Landau level. While the tunneling current-voltage characteristic at filling factor $ν= 1/2$ is a single peak shifted from zero bias by a Coulomb pseudogap, the spectrum at $ν=3/2$ shows a well-resolved double peak structure. This difference is present regardless of whether $ν=1/2$ and $ν= 3/2$ occur at the same or different magnetic fields. No analogous effect is seen at $ν= 5/2$ and 7/2 in the first excited Landau level.
Quantum phases of electrons in the filling factor range $2 \leqν\leq 3$ are probed by the weak optical emission from the partially populated second Landau level and spin wave measurements. Observations of optical emission include a multiplet of sharp peaks that exhibit a strong filling factor dependence. Spin wave measurements by resonant inelastic light scattering probe breaking of spin rotational invariance and are used to link this optical emission with collective phases of electrons. A remarkably rapid interplay between emission peak intensities manifests phase competition in the second La…
We have performed broad-band zero-field and magneto-infrared spectroscopy of the three dimensional topological insulator Bi$_{0.91}$Sb$_{0.09}$. The zero-field results allow us to measure the value of the direct band gap between the conducting $L_a$ and valence $L_s$ bands. Under applied field in the Faraday geometry (\emph{k} $||$ \emph{H} $||$ C1), we measured the presence of a multitude of Landau level (LL) transitions, all with frequency dependence $ω\propto \sqrt{H}$. We discuss the ramification of this observation for the surface and bulk properties of topological insulators.
We study theoretically nonequilibrium Landau-Zener-Stückelberg (LZS) dynamics in a driven double quantum dot (DQD) including dephasing and, importantly, energy relaxation due to environmental fluctuations. We derive effective nonequilibrium Bloch equations. These allow us to identify clear signatures for LZS oscilations observed but not recognized as such in experiments [Petersson et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 246804, 2010] and to identify the full environmental fluctuation spectra acting on a DQD given experimental data as in [Petersson et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 246804, 2010]. Herein we f…
Scanning tunneling spectroscopy is used to study the real-space local density of states (LDOS) of a two-dimensional electron system in magnetic field, in particular within higher Landau levels (LL). By Fourier transforming the LDOS, we find a set of n radial minima at fixed momenta for the nth LL. The momenta of the minima depend only on the inverse magnetic length. By comparison with analytical theory and numerical simulations, we attribute the minima to the nodes of the quantum cyclotron orbits, which decouple in Fourier representation from the random guiding center motion due to the disorde…
Tantalum arsenide, TaAs, is a prime example of a topological semimetal with two types of Weyl nodes, W1 and W2, whose bulk signatures have proven elusive. We apply Landau level spectroscopy to crystals with multiple facets and identify -- among other low-energy excitations between parabolic bands -- the response of a cone extending over a wide energy range. Comparison with density functional theory studies allows us to associate this conical band with nearly isotropic W2 nodes. In contrast, W1 cones, which are more anisotropic and less extended in energy, appear to be buried too deep beneath t…
The electronic Raman scattering of bulk graphite at zero magnetic field reveals a structureless signal characteristic of a metal. For T<~100 K and B > 2 T, several peaks at energies scaling linearly with magnetic field were observed and ascribed to transitions from the lowest energy Landau level(s) (LL) to excited states belonging to the same ladder. The LLs are equally (unequally) spaced for high (low) quantum numbers, being surprisingly consistent with the LL sequence from massive Dirac Fermions (m* = 0.033(2) m_e) with Berry's phase 2πfound in graphene bilayers. These results provide spectr…
We investigate Dirac fermions on the surface of the topological insulator Bi2Se3 using scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Landau levels (LLs) are observed in the tunneling spectra in a magnetic field. In contrast to LLs of conventional electrons, a field independent LL appears at the Dirac point, which is a hallmark of Dirac fermions. A scaling analysis of LLs based on the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition allowed us to determine the dispersion of the surface band. Near the Fermi energy, fine peaks mixed with LLs appear in the spectra, which may be responsible for the anomalous magneto-fing…
We report infrared studies of the Landau level (LL) transitions in single layer graphene. Our specimens are density tunable and show \textit{in situ} half-integer quantum Hall plateaus. Infrared transmission is measured in magnetic fields up to B=18 T at selected LL fillings. Resonances between hole LLs and electron LLs, as well as resonances between hole and electron LLs are resolved. Their transition energies are proportional to $\sqrt{B}$ and the deduced band velocity is $\tilde{c}\approx1.1\times10^6$ m/s. The lack of precise scaling between different LL transitions indicates considerable …
Landau level spectroscopy has been employed to probe the electronic structure of the valence band in a series of p-type HgTe/HgCdTe quantum wells with both normal and inverted ordering of bands. We find that the standard axial-symmetric 4-band Kane model, which is nowadays widely applied in physics of HgTe-based topological materials, does not fully account for the complex magneto-optical response observed in our experiments - notably, for the unexpected avoided crossings of excitations and for the appearance of transitions that are electric-dipole forbidden within this model. Nevertheless, re…
We present a calculation of the modulation in the Local Density Of electronic States (LDOS) caused by an impurity in graphene in the presence of external magnetic field. We focus on the spatial Fourier Transform (FT) of this modulation around the impurity. The FT due to the low energy quasiparticles are found to be nonzero over the reciprocal lattice corresponding to graphene. At these lattice spots the FT exhibits well-defined features at wavevectors that are multiples of the inverse cyclotron orbit diameter (see Figure 2) and is cut off at the wavevector corresponding to the energy of observ…
The magnetoelectronic properties of quasi-one-dimensional zigzag graphene nanoribbons are investigated by using the Peierls tight-binding model. Quasi-Landau levels (QLLs), dispersionless Landau subbands within a certain region of k-space, are resulted from the competition between magnetic and quantum confinement effects. In bilayer system, the interlayer interactions lead to two groups of QLLs, one occurring at the Fermi level and the other one occurring at higher energies. Transverse electric fields are able to distort energy spectrum, tilt two groups of QLLs and cause semiconductor-metal tr…
The coupling of electron orbital motion and spin leads to nontrivial changes in energy-level structures, leading to various spectroscopies and applications. In atoms, such spin-orbit coupling (SOC) causes anomalous Zeeman splitting, known as the Paschen-Back (PB) effect, in the pres-ence of a strong magnetic field. In solids, SOC generates energy-band inversion or splitting, a prerequisite for topological phases or Majorana fermions, at zero or weak magnetic fields. Here, we present the first observation of PB splitting of Landau levels (LLs) in indium arsenide nan-owires in a strong-field reg…
We present magneto-Raman scattering studies of electronic inter Landau level excitations in quasi-neutral graphene samples with different strengths of Coulomb interaction. The band velocity associated with these excitations is found to depend on the dielectric environment, on the index of Landau level involved, and to vary as a function of the magnetic field. This contradicts the single-particle picture of non-interacting massless Dirac electrons, but is accounted for by theory when the effect of electron-electron interaction is taken into account. Raman active, zero-momentum inter Landau leve…
One-atom thick crystalline layers and their vertical heterostructures carry the promise of designer electronic materials that are unattainable by standard growth techniques. In order to realize their potential it is necessary to isolate them from environmental disturbances in particular those introduced by the substrate. But finding and characterizing suitable substrates, and minimizing the random potential fluctuations they introduce, has been a persistent challenge in this emerging field. Here we show that Landau-level (LL) spectroscopy is exquisitely sensitive to potential fluctuations on b…

Energy spectroscopy of strongly interacting phases requires probes which minimize screening while retaining spectral resolution and local sensitivity. Here we demonstrate that such probes can be realized using atomic sized quantum dots bound to defects in hexagonal Boron Nitride tunnel barriers, placed at nanometric distance from graphene. With dot energies capacitively tuned by a planar graphite electrode, dot-assisted tunneling becomes highly sensitive to the graphene excitation spectrum. The spectra track the onset of degeneracy lifting with magnetic field at the ground state, and at unoccu…
Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy we have measured the response of Dirac electrons in a magnetic field to the presence of a well-defined smoothly varying 1D periodic potential. We find that the lower index Landau level energies reliably trace the potential variations, while the higher index levels appear surprisingly homogeneous. Modeling the effects of the periodic potential on the Landau level spectra, we show that the Landau level behavior encodes information on the spatial extent of the wavefunctions. The lower index maps reveal Landau level stripes, which would act as traps for chiral…

Studying the tight binding model in an applied rational magnetic field (H) we show that in graphene there are very unusual Landau levels situated in the immediate vicinity of the saddle point (M-point) energy epsilon_M. Landau levels around $ε_M$ are broadened into minibands (even in relatively weak magnetic fields ~40-53 T) with the maximal width reaching 0.4-0.5 of the energy separation between two neighboring Landau levels though at all other energies the width of Landau levels is practically zero. In terms of the semiclassical approach a broad Landau level or magnetic miniband at epsilon_M…
The relativistic Landau levels in the layered organic material alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2I_3 [BEDT-TTF=bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene] are sensitive to the tilt of the Dirac cones, which, as in the case of graphene, determine the low-energy electronic properties under appropriate pressure. We show that an applied inplane electric field, which happens to be in competition with the tilt of the cones, lifts the twofold valley degeneracy due to a different level spacing. The scenario may be tested in infrared transmission spectroscopy.
It is quite easy to control spin polarization and spin direction of a system via magnetic fields. However, there is no such a direct and efficient way to manipulate valley pseudospin degree of freedom. Here, we demonstrate experimentally that it is possible to realize valley polarization and valley inversion in graphene by using both strain-induced pseudomagnetic fields and real magnetic fields. The pseudomagnetic fields, which are quite different from real magnetic fields, pointing in opposite directions at the two distinct valleys of graphene. Therefore, coexistence of the pseudomagnetic fie…
We describe an infrared transmission study of a thin layer of bulk graphite in magnetic fields up to B = 34 T. Two series of absorption lines whose energy scales as sqrtB and B are present in the spectra and identified as contributions of massless holes at the H point and massive electrons in the vicinity of the K point, respectively. We find that the optical response of the K point electrons corresponds, over a wide range of energy and magnetic field, to a graphene bilayer with an effective inter-layer coupling 2γ_1, twice the value for a real graphene bilayer, which reflects the crystal orde…
Two laterally adjacent quantum Hall systems separated by an extended barrier of a thickness on the order of the magnetic length possess a complex Landau band structure in the vicinity of the line junction. The energy dispersion is obtained from an exact quantum-mechanical calculation of the single electron eigenstates for the coupled system by representing the wave functions as a superposition of parabolic cylinder functions. For orbit centers approaching the barrier, the separation of two subsequent Landau levels is reduced from the cyclotron energy to gaps which are much smaller. The positio…
We study the density of states and localization properties of the lowest Landau levels of graphene at high magnetic fields. We focus on the effects caused by correlated long-range hopping disorder, which, in exfoliated graphene, is induced by static ripples. We find that the broadening of the lowest Landau level shrinks exponentially with increasing disorder correlation length. At the same time, the broadening grows linearly with magnetic field and with disorder amplitudes. The lowest Landau level peak shows a robust splitting, whose origin we identify as the breaking of the sublattice (valley…
We study gauge fields produced by gradients of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and propose a model of AFM topological insulator of magnons. In the long wavelength limit, the Landau levels induced by the inhomogeneous Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction exhibit relativistic physics described by the Klein-Gordon equation. The spin Nernst response due to the formation of magnonic Landau levels is compared to similar topological responses in skyrmion and vortex-antivortex crystal phases of AFM insulators. Our studies show that AFM insulators exhibit rich physics associated with topological mag…

We present a self-consistent calculation of the interlayer asymmetry in bilayer graphene caused by an applied electric field in magnetic fields. We show how this asymmetry influences the Landau level spectrum in bilayer graphene and the observable inter-Landau level transitions when they are studied as a function of high magnetic field at fixed filling factor as measured experimentally by E.A. Henriksen et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 100 (2008), 087403. We also analyze the magneto-optical spectra of bilayer flakes in the photon-energy range corresponding to transitions between degenerate and split b…
The electronic structure of Bernal-stacked graphite subject to tilted magnetic fields has been investigated using infrared magneto-transmission experiments. With the increasing in-plane component of the magnetic field B, we observe significant broadening and partially also splitting of interband inter-Landau level transitions, which originate at the H point of the graphite Brillouin zone, where the charge carriers behave as massless Dirac fermions. The observed behavior is attributed to the lifting of the twofold degeneracy of Landau levels at the H point - a degeneracy which in graphite compl…
Graphene, with its massless linearly-dispersing carriers, in the quantum Hall regime provides an instructive comparison with conventional two-dimensional (2D) systems in which carriers have a nonzero band mass and quadratic dispersion. We investigate the influence of Landau level mixing in graphene on Wigner crystal states in the $n^\mathrm{th}$ Landau level obtained using single Landau level approximation. We show that the Landau level mixing does not qualitatively change the phase diagram as a function of partial filling factor $ν$ in the $n^\mathrm{th}$ level. We find that the inter-Landau …
Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy in magnetic field was used to study Landau quantization in graphene and its dependence on charge carrier density. Measurements were carried out on exfoliated graphene samples deposited on a chlorinated SiO2 thermal oxide which allowed observing the Landau level sequences characteristic of single layer graphene while tuning the density through the Si backgate. Upon changing the carrier density we find abrupt jumps in the Fermi level after each Landau level is filled. Moreover, the Landau level spacing shows a marked increase at low doping levels, c…
Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) at 5 K in B-fields up to 7 T, we investigate the local density of states of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) created by Cs adsorption on p-type InSb(110). The 2DES, which in contrast to previous STS studies exhibits a 2D Fermi level, shows standing waves at B = 0 T with corrugations decreasing with energy and with wave numbers in accordance with theory. In magnetic field percolating drift states are observed within the disorder broadened Landau levels. Due to the large electric field perpendicular to the surface, a beating pattern of the Land…
The scarcity of the fractional quantum Hall effect in higher Landau levels is a most intriguing fact when contrasted with its great abundance in the lowest Landau level. This paper shows that a suppression of the hard core repulsion in going from the lowest Landau level to higher Landau levels leads to a collapse of the energy of the neutral excitation, destabilizing all fractional states in the third and higher Landau levels, and almost all in the second Landau level. The remaining fractions are in agreement with those observed experimentally.
Two recent experiments successfully observed Landau levels in the tunneling spectra of the topological insulator Bi2Se3. To mimic the influence of a scanning tunneling microscope tip on the Landau levels we solve the two-dimensional Dirac equation in the presence of a localized electrostatic potential. We find that the STM tip not only shifts the Landau levels, but also suppresses for a realistic choice of parameters the negative branch of Landau levels.
The effects of Landau level mixing and finite thickness of the two-dimensional electron gas on the relative stability of skyrmion and single spin-flip excitations at Landau level filling factor $ν=1$ have been investigated. Landau level mixing is studied by fixed-phase diffusion Monte Carlo and finite thickness is included by modifying the effective Coulomb interaction. Both Landau level mixing and finite thickness lower skyrmion excitation energies and favor skyrmions with fewer spin flips. However, the two effects do not work `coherently'. When finite thickness is included the effect of Land…
We derive an effective hamiltonian in the Lowest Landau Level (LLL) that incorporates the effects of Landau-level mixing to all higher Landau levels to leading order in the ratio of interaction energy to the cyclotron energy. We then transcribe the hamiltonian to the composite fermion basis using our hamiltonian approach and compute the effect of LL mixing on transport gaps.
We study the magnetic-field dependence of Landau levels in graphene proximitized by large spin-orbit coupling materials, such as transition-metal dichalcogenides or topological insulators. In addition to the Rashba coupling, two types of intrinsic spin-orbit interactions, uniform (Kane-Mele type) and staggered (valley Zeeman type), are included, to resolve their interplay with magnetic orbital effects. Employing a continuum model approach, we derive analytic expressions for low-energy Landau levels, which can be used to extract local orbital and spin-orbit coupling parameters from scanning pro…
We report results of exact diagonalization studies of the spin- and valley-polarized fractional quantum Hall effect in the $N=0$ and 1 Landau levels in graphene. We use an effective model that incorporates Landau level mixing to lowest-order in the parameter $κ= \frac{e^2/ε\ell}{\hbar v_F/\ell}=\frac{e^2}{εv_F\hbar}$ which is magnetic field independent and can only be varied through the choice of substrate. We find Landau level mixing effects are negligible in the $N=0$ Landau level for $κ\lesssim 2$. In fact, the lowest Landau level projected Coulomb Hamiltonian is a better approximation to t…
We provide an article-extract which points out that a microwave-induced modification in the resistance occurs at relatively "high" magnetic fields where the radiation is incapable of producing inter-Landau level excitations and, therefore, that the microwave radiation must be producing intra Landau level excitations as well.
The pair distribution function and the static structure factor are computed for composite fermions. Clear and robust evidence for a $2k_F$ structure is seen in a range of filling factors in the vicinity of the half-filled Landau level. Surprisingly, it is found that filled Landau levels of composite fermions, i.e. incompressible FQHE states, bear a stronger resemblance to a Fermi sea than do filled Landau levels of electrons.
Low-temperature, electronic transport in Landau levels N>1 of a two-dimensional electron system is strongly anisotropic. At half-filling of either spin level of each such Landau level the magnetoresistance either collapses to form a deep minimum or is peaked in a sharp maximum, depending on the in-plane current direction. Such anisotropies are absent in the N=0 and N=1 Landau level, which are dominated by the states of the fractional quantum Hall effect. The transport anisotropies may be indicative of a new many particle state, which forms exclusively in higher Landau levels.
Layer stacking and crystal lattice symmetry play important roles in the band structure and the Landau levels of multilayer graphene. ABA-stacked trilayer graphene possesses mirror-symmetry-protected monolayer-like and bilayer-like band structures. Broken mirror symmetry by a perpendicular electric field therefore induces hybridization between these bands and various quantum Hall phases emerge. We experimentally explore the evolution of Landau levels in ABA-stacked trilayer graphene under electric field. We observe a variety of valley and orbital dependent Landau level evolutions. These evoluti…
HgTe/HgCdTe quantum wells with the inverted band structure have been probed using far infrared magneto-spectroscopy. Realistic calculations of Landau level diagrams have been performed to identify the observed transitions. Investigations have been greatly focused on the magnetic field dependence of the peculiar pair of "zero-mode" Landau levels which characteristically split from the upper conduction and bottom valence bands, and merge under the applied magnetic field. The observed avoided crossing of these levels is tentatively attributed to the bulk inversion asymmetry of zinc blend compound…
We report an anti-levitation behavior of Landau levels in vanishing magnetic fields in a high quality hetero-junction insulated-gated field-effect transistor. We found, in the Landau fan diagram of electron density versus magnetic field, the positions of the magneto-resistance minima at Landau level fillings ν=4, 5, 6 move below the 'traditional' Landau level line to lower electron densities. Moreover, the even and odd filling factors show quantitatively different behaviors in anti-levitation, suggesting that the exchange interactions may be important.
