We perform infrared magneto-spectroscopy of Landau level (LL) transitions in dual-gated bilayer graphene. At $ν=4$ when the zeroth LL (octet) is filled, two resonances are observed indicating the opening of a gap. At $ν=0$ when the octet is half-filled, multiple resonances disperse non-monotonically with increasing displacement field, $D$, perpendicular to the sheet, showing a phase transition at modest displacement fields from a canted anti-ferromagnet (CAFM) to the layer-polarized state, with a gap that opens linearly in $D$. When $D=0$ and $ν$ is varied, resonances at $\pmν$ show an electron-hole asymmetry with multiple line splittings as the octet is progressively filled. The $ν=4$ data show good agreement with predictions from a mean-field Hartree-Fock calculation when accounting for multiple tight-binding terms in a four-band model of bilayer graphene. However even by incorporating a valley interaction anisotropy tuned to the CAFM ground state, only partial agreement is found at $ν=0$. Our results suggest additional physics is required to understand bilayer graphene at half-filling.
The quantum Hall phase diagram of the half-filled bilayer system in the second Landau level is studied as a function of tunneling and layer separation using exact diagonalization. We make the striking prediction that bilayer structures would manifest two distinct branches of incompressible fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) corresponding to the Abelian 331 state (at moderate to low tunneling and large layer separation) and the non-Abelian Pfaffian state (at large tunneling and small layer separation). The observation of these two FQHE branches and the quantum phase transition between them w…
The quantum Hall effect near the charge neutrality point in bilayer graphene is investigated in high magnetic fields of up to 35 T using electronic transport measurements. In the high field regime, the eight-fold degeneracy in the zero energy Landau level is completely lifted, exhibiting new quantum Hall states corresponding filling factors $ν=$0, 1, 2, & 3. Measurements of the activation energy gap in tilted magnetic fields suggest that the Landau level splitting at the newly formed $ν=$1, 2, & 3 filling factors are independent of spin, consistent with the formation of a quantum Hall ferromag…
The electron-electron interaction in the Landau levels of bilayer graphene is markedly different from that of conventional semiconductors such as GaAs. We show that in the zeroth Landau level of bilayer graphene, in the orbital which is dominated by the non-relativistic second Landau level wave function, by tuning the magnetic field a topological quantum phase transition from an Abelian composite fermion to a non-Abelian parton fractional quantum Hall state can be induced at filling factors $1/2, ~2/5$ and $3/7$. The parton states host exotic anyons that can potentially be utilized to store an…
We study the magnetotransport properties of high mobility holes in monolayer and bilayer WSe$_2$, which display well defined Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations, and quantum Hall states (QHSs) in high magnetic fields. In both mono and bilayer WSe$_2$, the SdH oscillations and the QHSs occur predominantly at even filling factors, evincing a two-fold Landau level degeneracy. The Fourier transform analysis of the SdH oscillations in bilayer WSe$_2$ reveal the presence of two subbands localized in the top or the bottom layer, as well as negative compressibility. From the temperature dependence of…
We examine the quantum phase diagram of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in the lowest two Landau levels in half-filled bilayer structures as a function of tunneling strength and layer separation, i.e., we revisit the lowest Landau level filling factor 1/2 bilayer problem and make new predictions involving bilayers in the half-filled second Landau level (i.e., filling factor 5/2). Using numerical exact diagonalization we investigate the important question of whether this system supports a FQHE described by the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state in the strong tunneling regime. In th…
We analyze the phase diagram of the zeroth Landau level of bilayer graphene, taking into account the realistic effects of screening of the Coulomb interaction and the strong mixing between two degenerate sublevels. We identify robust quantum Hall states at filling factors ν=-1, -4/3, -5/3, -8/5, -1/2, and discuss the nature of their ground states, collective excitations, and relation to the more familiar states in GaAs using a tractable model. In particular, we present evidence that the ν=-1/2 state, which was recently reported experimentally, is non-Abelian, and described by either the Moore-…
We show that the flat bands in the chiral model of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene remain exactly flat in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. This is shown by an exact mapping between the model and the lowest Landau level wavefunctions at an effective magnetic field, in which the external field is either augmented or reduced by one flux quantum per unit cell. When the external field reaches one flux quantum per unit cell, the model exhibits a topological phase transition. These findings allow us to analyze a Jain-series of Fractional Chern Insulators states in the exactly flat…
The stripe state in the lowest Landau level is studied by the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. The ground state energy and pair correlation functions are systematically calculated for various pseudopotentials in the lowest Landau level. We show that the stripe state in the lowest Landau level is realized only in a system whose width perpendicular to the two-dimensional electron layer is smaller than the order of magnetic length.
We study the collective modes of the quantum Hall states in undoped bilayer graphene in a strong perpendicular magnetic and electric field. Both for the well-known ferromagnetic state that is relevant for small electric field $E_\perp$ and the analogous valley/layer polarized one suitable for large $E_\perp$, the low energy physics is dominated by magnetoexcitons with zero angular momentum that are even combinations of excitons that conserve Landau orbitals. We identify a long wave length instability in both states, and argue that there is an intermediate range of the electric field $E^{(1)}_\…
The degeneracy of Landau levels flanking charge neutrality in twisted bilayer graphene is known to change from eight-fold to four-fold when the twist angle is reduced to values near the magic angle of $\approx 1.05^\circ$. This degeneracy lifting has been reproduced in experiments by multiple groups, and is known to occur even in devices which do not harbor the correlated insulators and superconductors. We propose $C_3$ symmetry breaking as an explanation of such robust degeneracy lifting, and support our proposal by numerical results on the Landau level spectrum in near-magic-angle twisted bi…
We investigate intra-Landau-level collective excitations in a bilayer disordered two-dimensional electron system exposed to a perpendicular magnetic field. The energy spectrum is calculated within the random phase approximation by taking into account electron-impurity scattering in the self-consistent Born approximation which includes consistent vertex corrections. Signatures of these bilayer excitations in drag and collective excitation measurements are identified.
We examine the quantum phase diagram of the fractional quantum Hall effect in the lowest Landau level in half-filled bilayer structures as a function of tunneling strength and layer separation. Using numerical exact diagonalization we investigate the important question of whether this system supports a fractional quantum Hall effect described by the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state in the strong tunneling regime. We find that, although it is in principle possible, it is unlikely that the non-Abelian FQHE exists in the lowest Landau level. We establish that all so far observed FQHE states …
Utilizing the realistic continuum description of twisted bilayer MoTe2 and many-body exact diagonalization calculation, we establish that the second moiré band of twisted bilayer MoTe2, at a small twist angle of approximately 2°, serves as an optimal platform for achieving the long-sought non-Abelian fractional quantum anomalous Hall states without the need for external magnetic fields. Across a wide parameter range, our exact diagonalization calculations reveal that the half-filled second moiré band demonstrates the ground state degeneracy and spectral flows, which are consistent with the pfa…
Interaction driven integer quantum Hall effects are anticipated in graphene bilayers because of the near-degeneracy of the eight Landau levels which appear near the neutral system Fermi level. We predict that an intra-Landau-level cyclotron resonance signal will appear at some odd-integer filling factors, accompanied by collective modes which are nearly gapless and have approximate $k^{3/2}$ dispersion. We speculate on the possibility of unususal localization physics associated with these modes.
Heterostructures formed between two different van der Waals materials enable interactions and functionalities absent in each component. In this work we show that vicinity to an atomically thin WSe$_2$ sheet dramatically impacts the energies of the symmetry-broken low Landau levels of bilayer graphene, possibly due to screening. We present a systematic study of the magnetic field and electrical displacement field dependences of the Landau level gaps at filling factor $ν$ = 1, 2, 3, and compare to BN encapsulated pristine bilayer graphene. The exchange-dominated energy splitting between the N = …
The zero-energy Landau level of bilayer graphene is shown to be anomalously sharp (delta-function like) against bond disorder as long as the disorder is correlated over a few lattice constants. The robustness of the zero-mode anomaly can be attributed to the preserved chiral symmetry. Unexpectedly, even when we apply a finite potential difference (i.e., an electric field) between the top and the bottom layers, the valley-split $n=0$ Landau levels remain anomalously sharp although they are now shifted away from the zero energy, while the $n=1$ Landau levels exhibit the usual behavior.
We show that topology of the low-energy band structure in bilayer graphene critically depends on mechanical deformations of the crystal which may easily develop in suspended graphene flakes. We describe the Lifshitz transition that takes place in strained bilayers upon splitting the parabollic bands at intermediate energies into several Dirac cones at the energy scale of few meV. Then, we show how this affects the electron Landau level spectra and the quantum Hall effect.
We investigate, analytically and numerically, the effects of disorder on the density of states and on the localization properties of the relativistic two dimensional fermions in the lowest Landau level. Employing a supersymmetric technique, we calculate the exact density of states for the Cauchy (Lorentzian) distribution for various types of disorders. We use a numerical technique to establish the localization-delocalization (LD) transition in the lowest Landau level. For some types of disorder the LD transition is shown to belong to a different universality class, as compared to the correspon…
In this work we introduce a low-energy Hamiltonian for single layer and bilayer black phosphorus that describes the electronic states at the vicinity of the gamma point. The model is based on a recently proposed tight-binding description for electron and hole bands close to the Fermi level. We calculate expressions for the Landau level spectrum as function of magnetic field and in the case of bilayer black phosphorus we investigate the effect of an external bias on the electronic band gap. The results showcase the highly anisotropic character of black phosphorus and in particular for bilayer B…
If bilayer graphene is placed in a high perpendicular magnetic field, several quantum Hall plateaus are observed at low enough temperatures. Of these, the $σ_{xy}=4ne^2/h$ sequence ($n\neq0$) is explained by standard Landau quantization, while the other integer plateaus arise due to interactions. The low-energy excitations in both cases are magnetoexcitons, whose dispersion relation depends on single- and many-body effects in a complicated manner. Analyzing the magnetoexciton modes in bilayer graphene, we find that the mixing of different Landau level transitions not only renormalizes them, bu…
We investigate the charge carrier dynamics in bilayer graphene subject to monochromatic laser irradiation within the Landau level quantization regime. Even though the radiation field does not lift the energy degeneracy of the lowest Landau levels (LLs), it nevertheless has a strong effect on the photoinduced pseudospin polarization response for higher LLs ($n\ge2$). Our results show that the photoinduced bandgaps lead to a finite response of the averaged pseudospin polarization with nontrivial oscillating behavior. It is shown that the contribution from these higher LL transitions turns out to…
The effective mass and superfluidity-normal phase transition temperature of magnetoexcitons in topological insulator bilayers are theoretically investigated. The intra-Landau-level Coulomb interaction is treated perturbatively, from which the effective magnetoexciton mass is analytically discussed. The inclusion of inter-Landau-level Coulomb interaction by more exact numerical diagonalization of the Hamiltonian brings out important modifications to magnetoexciton properties, which are specially characterized by prominent reduction in the magnetoexciton effective mass and promotion in the super…
We study the Landau quantization of the electronic spectrum for graphene bilayers that are rotationally faulted to produce periodic superlattices. Commensurate twisted bilayers exist in two families distinguished by their sublattice exchange parity. We show that these two families exhibit distinct Landau quantized spectra distinguished both by the interlayer coupling of their zero modes and by an amplitude modulation of their spectra at energies above their low energy interlayer coherence scales. These modulations can provide a powerful experimental probe of the magnitude of a weak coherence s…
Electronic structures and their Landau quantizations in twisted graphene bilayer and trilayer are investigated using scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy. In the twisted trilayer, the top graphene layer and second layer are AB (Bernal) stacking and there is a stacking misorientation between the second layer and third layer. Both the twisted bilayer and trilayer exhibit two pronounced low-energy van Hove singularities (VHSs) in their spectra. Below the VHSs, the observed Landau level quantization in the twisted bilayer is identical to that of massless Dirac fermion in graphene monola…
Electronic structure of graphene monolayer-bilayer junction in a magnetic field is studied within an effective-mass approximation. The energy spectrum is characterized by interface Landau levels, i.e., the locally flat bands appearing near the boundary region, resulting in a series of characteristic peaks in the local density of states. Their energies are independent of boundary types such as zigzag or armchair. In the atomic scale, the local density of states shows a Kekulé pattern due to the valley mixing in the armchair boundary, while does not in the zigzag boundary.
We consider the interplay between the antiferromagnetic and Kekulé valence bond solid orderings in the zero energy Landau levels of neutral monolayer and bilayer graphene. We establish the presence of Wess-Zumino-Witten terms between these orders: this implies that their quantum fluctuations are described by the deconfined critical theories of quantum spin systems. We present implications for experiments, including the possible presence of excitonic superfluidity in bilayer graphene.
We report angle-resolved Raman scattering observations of the temperature dependent Landau damping of the acoustic plasmon in an electron bilayer system realised in a GaAs double quantum well structure. Corresponding calculations of the charge-density excitation spectrum of the electron bilayer using forms of the random phase approximation (RPA), and the static local field formalism of Singwi, Tosi, Land and Sjölander (STLS) extended to incorporate non-zero electron temperature $T_{\rm e}$ and phenomenological damping, are also presented. The STLS calculations include details of the temperatur…
In a magnetic field bilayer graphene supports an octet of zero-energy Landau levels with an extra twofold degeneracy in Landau orbitals n=0 and n=1. It is shown that this orbital degeneracy is lifted due to Coulombic quantum fluctuations of the valence band (the Dirac sea); this is a quantum effect analogous to the Lamb shift in the hydrogen atom. A detailed study is made of how these zero-energy levels evolve, with filling, into a variety of pseudo-zero-mode Landau levels in the presence of possible spin and valley breaking and Coulomb interactions, and a comparison is made with experimental …
We obtain analytical expressions for the eigenstates and the Landau level spectrum of biased graphene bilayers in a magnetic field. The calculations are performed in the context of a four-band continuum model and generalize previous approximate results. Solutions are presented for the spectrum as a function of interlayer coupling, the potential difference between the layers and the magnetic field. The explicit expressions allow us to calculate the oscillator strength and the selection rules for electric dipole transitions between the Landau states. Some transitions are significantly shifted in…
Landau level gaps are important parameters for understanding electronic interactions and symmetry-broken processes in bilayer graphene (BLG). Here we present transport spectroscopy measurements of LL gaps in double-gated suspended BLG with high mobilities in the quantum Hall regime. By using bias as a spectroscopic tool, we measure the gap Δ for the quantum Hall (QH) state at filling factor ν={\pm}4 and -2. The single-particle gap for ν=4 scales linearly with magnetic field B and is independent of the out-of-plane electric field E. For the symmetry-broken ν=-2 state, the measured values of gap…
The large lattice constant of Moire superlattice formed in twisted bilayer graphene for small twist enables observing the Landau levels splitting into Hofstadter butterflies in energy spectra for moderate magnetic field. This is expected for generic system under homogeneous bias conditions but its robustness against spatial potential fluctuations is left open question. We study the energy structure of twisted bilayer system in dependence of both, the homogeneous magnetic field and the bias voltage applied exclusively in its central part. Although the translational symmetry is broken, the energ…
The electromagnetic response of bilayer graphene in a magnetic field is studied in comparison with that of monolayer graphene. Both types of graphene turn out to be qualitatively quite similar in dielectric and screening characteristics, especially those deriving from vacuum fluctuations, but the effect is generally much more sizable for bilayers. The presence of the zero-(energy-)mode Landau levels is a feature specific to graphene. In bilayers, unlike in monolayers, the effect of the zero-mode levels becomes visible and even dominant in density response as an externally-controllable band gap…
The transition between the stripe state and the liquid state in a high magnetic field is studied by the density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) method. Systematic analysis on the ground state of two-dimensional electrons in the lowest Landau level shows that the transition from the stripe state to the liquid state at v=3/8 is caused by a reduction of repulsive interaction around r=3. The same reduction of the interaction also stabilizes the incompressible liquid states at v=1/3 and 2/5, which shows a similarity between the two liquid states at v=3/8 and 1/3. It is also shown that the stron…
The $E = 0$ octet of bilayer graphene in the filling factor range of -4 < $ν$ < 4 is a fertile playground for many-body phenomena, yet a Landau level diagram is missing due to strong interactions and competing quantum degrees of freedom. We combine measurements and modeling to construct an empirical and quantitative spectrum. The single-particle-like diagram incorporates interaction effects effectively and provides a unified framework to understand the occupation sequence, gap energies and phase transitions observed in the octet. It serves as a new starting point for more sophisticated calcula…
We study the fractional quantum Hall effect in the central Landau level of bilayer graphene. By tuning the external applied magnetic field and the electric bias between the two layers one can access a regime where there is a degeneracy between Landau levels with orbital characters corresponding to N=0 and N=1 Galilean Landau levels. While the Laughlin state is generically the ground state for filling $ν=1/3$ we find that it can be destroyed and replaced by a Wigner crystal at the same filling factor by tuning the bias and applied field. This competition does not take place at $ν=2/3$ where the…
Bilayer graphene in a magnetic field supports eight zero-energy Landau levels, which, as a tunable band gap develops, evolve into two nearly-degenerate quartets separated by the band gap. A close look is made into the properties of such an isolated quartet of pseudo-zero-mode levels at half filling in the presence of an in-plane electric field and the Coulomb interaction. The pseudo-zero-mode levels turn out to support, via orbital mixing, charge carriers with induced electric dipole moment, which lead to characteristic collective excitations, pseudospin waves, with some controllable features;…
A longstanding puzzle for the lowest Landau level crystal phase has been an order of magnitude discrepancy between the theoretically calculated energy of the defects and the measured activation gap. We perform an extensive study of various kinds of defects in the correlated composite fermion crystal and find that the lowest energy defect is a six-fold symmetric "hyper-correlated bubble interstitial," in which an interstitial particle forms a strongly correlated bound state with a particle of the crystal. The energy of the bubble defect is a factor of $\sim$3 smaller than that of the lowest ene…
Energy versus magnetic field (Hofstadter butterfly diagram) in twisted bilayer graphene is studied theoretically. If we take the usual Landau gauge, we cannot take a finite periodicity even when the magnetic flux through a supercell is a rational number. We show that the \textit{periodic} Landau gauge, which has the periodicity in one direction, makes it possible to obtain the Hofstadter butterfly diagram. Since a supercell can be large, magnetic flux through a supercell normalized by the flux quantum can be a fractional number with a small denominator, even when a magnetic field is not extrem…
There exists a widely believed opinion, that the many-body ground state of a two-dimensional electron system at a completely filled lowest Landau level (the filling factor $ν=1$) is described by the so-called Hartree-Fock wave function, and that this solution is the unique, exact eigenstate of the system at $ν=1$. I show that this opinion is erroneous, construct an infinite number of other variational many-body wave functions, and discuss the properties of a few states which have the energy substantially lower than the energy of the Hartree-Fock state.
Composite fermion metal states emerge in quantum Hall bilayers at total Landau level filling factor $ν_T$=1 when the tunneling gap collapses by application of in-plane components of the external magnetic field. Evidence of this transformation is found in the continua of spin excitations observed by inelastic light scattering below the spin-wave mode at the Zeeman energy. The low-lying spin modes are interpreted as quasiparticle excitations with simultaneous changes in spin orientation and composite fermion Landau level index.
We theoretically predict the radiation-induced ``zero-resistance state'' near half filling of the lowest Landau level, which is caused by the photon-assisted transport in the presence of oscillating density of states due to composite fermion Landau levels, and is analogous to the radiation-induced ``zero-resistance state'' of electrons at low magnetic fields. Based on a non-perturbative theory, we show that the radiation field does not break the bound state of electrons and flux quanta, i.e. composite fermions. Our prediction is independent of the power and frequency of radiation field.

In [Phys. Rev. Lett. vol. 119, p. 133901 (2017)] it was argued that two parallel graphene layers in the presence of electron drift support unstable plasmon modes. Here we show that the predicted plasmon instability is an artifact of errors upon evaluation of graphene polarizability in the presence if electron drift. Crucial role of broken Galilean invariance and spatial dispersion of conductivity for suppression of plasmon instabilities is highlighted.
We investigate theoretically the fractional quantum Hall effect at half-filling in the lowest Landau level observed in asymmetric wide quantum wells. The asymmetry can be achieved by a potential bias applied between the two sides of the well. Within exact-diagonalization calculations in the spherical geometry, we find that the incompressible state is described in terms of a two-component wave function. Its overlap with the ground state can be optimized with the help of a rotation in the space of the pseudospin, which mimics the lowest two electronic subbands.
Physical properties reflecting valley asymmetry of Landau levels in a biased bilayer graphene under magnetic field are discussed. Within the $4-$band continuum model with Hartree-corrected self-consistent gap and finite damping factor we predict the appearance of anomalous steps in quantized Hall conductivity due to the degeneracy lifting of Landau levels. Moreover, the valley symmetry breaking effect appears as a non-semiclassical de Haas-van Alphen effect where the reduction of the oscillation period to half cannot be accounted for through quasi-classical quantization of the orbits in recipr…
We consider graphene bilayer in a constant magnetic field of arbitrary orientation (i.e. tilted with respect to the graphene plane). In the low energy approximation to tight binding model with Peierls substitution, we find the exact spectrum of Landau levels. This spectrum is two-fold degenerate in the limit of large in-plane field, which gives rise to a new SU(2) symmetry in this limit.
The stability of the zero-energy Landau levels in bilayer graphene against the chiral symmetric disorder is examined in the presence of the trigonal warping. Based on the tight-binding lattice model with a bond disorder correlated over several lattice constants, it is shown that among the four Landau levels per spin and per valley, two Landau levels exhibit the anomalous sharpness as in the absence of the trigonal warping, while the other two are broadened, yielding split peaks in the density of states. This can be attributed to the fact that the total chirality in each valley is +2 or -2, whi…
Particle-hole symmetry breaking in the fractional quantum Hall effect has recently been studied both theoretically and experimentally with most works focusing on non-Abelian states in the second electronic Landau level. In this work, we theoretically investigate particle-hole symmetry breaking of incompressible fractional quantum Hall states in the lowest Landau level under the influence of the realistic effect of a finite magnetic field strength. A finite magnetic field induces Landau level and sub-band mixing which are known to break particle-hole symmetry at the level of the Hamiltonian. We…
Breakdown of the quantum Hall effect (QHE) is commonly associated with an electric field approaching the inter Landau-level (LL) Zener field, ratio of the Landau gap and cyclotron radius. Eluded in semiconducting heterostructures, in spite of extensive investigation, the intrinsic Zener limit is reported here using high-mobility bilayer graphene and high-frequency current noise. We show that collective excitations arising from electron-electron interactions are essential. Beyond a noiseless ballistic QHE regime a large superpoissonian shot noise signals the breakdown via inter-LL scattering. T…
At the low Landau filling factor $(ν)$ termination of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) series, two-dimensional electron systems (2DESs) exhibit an insulating phase that is understood as a form of pinned Wigner solid. Here we use microwave spectroscopy to probe the transition to the insulator for a wide quantum well (WQW) sample that can support single-layer or bilayer states depending on its overall carrier density, $n$. We find the insulator exhibits a resonance, which is characteristic of a bilayer solid. The resonance also reveals a pair of transitions within the solid, which are n…
Electronic properties of surface areas decoupled from graphite are studied using scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy. We show that it is possible to identify decoupled graphene monolayer, Bernal bilayer, and Bernal trilayer on graphite surface according to their tunnelling spectra in high magnetic field. The decoupled monolayer and bilayer exhibit Landau quantization of massless and massive Dirac fermions, respectively. The substrate generates a sizable band gap, ~35 meV, in the Bernal bilayer, therefore, the eightfold degenerate Landau level at the charge neutrality point is split…
An unconventional insulating phase and a superconducting phase were recently discovered in the twisted bilayer graphene [Y. Cao et al, Nature {\bf 556}, 80; {\bf 556}, 43 (2018)], but the relevant low-energy electronic states have not been clearly identified yet. In this work, I show that the interlayer hopping induces a spatially modulated Dirac mass term in the continuum Hamiltonian, and leads to a low-energy band formed by Dirac zero modes in the moiré superlattice. This moiré band becomes extremely flat and thus strongly correlated as the Dirac velocity vanishes at the magic angle, and ent…
Currently there is a lively discussion concerning Fermi velocity renormalization in twisted bilayers and several contradicted experimental results are reported. Here we study electronic structures of the twisted bilayers by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS). The interlayer coupling strengths between the adjacent bilayers are measured according to energy separations of two pronounced low-energy van Hove singularities (VHSs) in the STS spectra. We demonstrate that there is a large range of values for the interlayer interaction in different twisted bilayers. Below the VHS…
Bilayer graphene in a magnetic field supports eight zero-energy Landau levels, which, as a tunable band gap develops, split into two nearly-degenerate quartets separated by the band gap. A close look is made into the properties of such an isolated quartet of pseudo-zero-mode levels at half filling in the presence of an in-plane electric field and the Coulomb interaction, with focus on revealing further controllable features in bilayer graphene. The half-filled pseudo-zero-mode levels support, via orbital level mixing, charge carriers with nonzero electric moment, which would lead to field-indu…
We present a theoretical study of the bandstructure and Landau levels in bilayer graphene at low energies in the presence of a transverse magnetic field and Rashba spin-orbit interaction in the regime of negligible trigonal distortion. Within an effective low energy approach (Löwdin partitioning theory) we derive an effective Hamiltonian for bilayer graphene that incorporates the influence of the Zeeman effect, the Rashba spin-orbit interaction, and inclusively, the role of the intrinsic spin-orbit interaction on the same footing. Particular attention is spent to the energy spectrum and Landau…
Graphene hybrid planar structures consisting of two regions with different quantum Hall (QH) states exhibit unusual transport properties1-5, originating from chiral edge states equilibration at the interface of the two different regions6. Here we present a sub-nanometre-resolved scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) study of a monolayer-bilayer graphene planar junction in the QH regime. The atomically well-defined interface of such a junction allows us to spatially resolve the interface electronic properties. Around the interface, we detect Landau quantization of massless…
