Interaction driven integer quantum Hall effects are anticipated in graphene bilayers because of the near-degeneracy of the eight Landau levels which appear near the neutral system Fermi level. We predict that an intra-Landau-level cyclotron resonance signal will appear at some odd-integer filling factors, accompanied by collective modes which are nearly gapless and have approximate $k^{3/2}$ dispersion. We speculate on the possibility of unususal localization physics associated with these modes.
In a magnetic field bilayer graphene supports, at the lowest Landau level, eight characteristic zero-energy levels with an extra twofold degeneracy in Landau orbitals $n=\{0,1\}$. They, under general one-body and many-body interactions, evolve into pseudo-zero-mode (PZM) levels. A close look is made into the detailed structure and characteristics of such PZM levels and cyclotron resonance they host, with full account taken of spin splitting, interlayer bias, weak electron-hole asymmetry and Coulomb interactions. It is pointed out that the PZM levels generally undergo orbital level mixing (in o…
Cyclotron resonance in graphene is studied with focus on many-body corrections to the resonance energies, which evade Kohn's theorem. The genuine many-body corrections turn out to derive from vacuum polarization, specific to graphene, which diverges at short wavelengths. Special emphasis is placed on the need for renormalization, which allows one to determine many-body corrections uniquely from one resonance to another. For bilayer graphene, in particular, both intralayer and interlayer coupling strengths undergo infinite renormalization; as a result, the renormalized velocity and interlayer c…
Inter-Landau-level transitions in the bilayer graphene at high perpendicular magnetic field at the filling-factor v<<1 have been studied. The next-nearest-neighbor transitions, energy difference between dimer and non-dimer sites and layer asymmetry are included. The influence of Coulomb interaction is taken into account. The magnetoplasmon excitations in bilayer graphene at small momenta are considered in the frame of the Hartree-Fock approximation. It is shown that asymmetry in cyclotron resonance of clean bilayer graphene depends on magnetic field. At lower magnetic fields the energy splitti…
Cyclotron resonance in bilayer graphene is studied with weak electron-hole asymmetry, suggested by experiment, taken into account and with the focus on many-body corrections that evade Kohn's theorem. It is shown by direct calculation that the theory remains renormalizable to O(e^2) in the presence of electron-hole asymmetry parameters, and a general program to carry out renormalization for graphene under a magnetic field is presented. Inclusion of electron-hole asymmetry in part improves the theoretical fit to the existing data and the data appear to indicate the running of the renormalized v…
We present the first measurements of cyclotron resonance of electrons and holes in bilayer graphene. In magnetic fields up to B = 18 T we observe four distinct intraband transitions in both the conduction and valence bands. The transition energies are roughly linear in B between the lowest Landau levels, whereas they follow \sqrt{B} for the higher transitions. This highly unusual behavior represents a change from a parabolic to a linear energy dispersion. The density of states derived from our data generally agrees with the existing lowest order tight binding calculation for bilayer graphene. …
Electron wavefunctions in twisted bilayer graphene may have a strong single layer character or be intrinsically delocalized between layers, with their nature often determined by how energetically close they are to the Dirac point. In this paper, we demonstrate that in magnetic fields, optical absorption (cyclotron resonance) spectra contain signatures which may be used to distinguish the nature of these wavefunctions at low energies, as well as to locate low energy critical points in the zero-field energy spectrum. Optical absorption for two different configurations -- electric field parallel …
We report on a tunable - by magnetic field and gate voltage - conversion of terahertz radiation into a dc current in spatially modulated bilayer graphene. We experimentally demonstrate that the underlying physics is related to the so-called ratchet effect. Our key findings are the direct observation of a sharp cyclotron resonance in the photocurrent and the demonstration of two effects caused by electron-electron interaction: the plasmonic splitting of the resonance due to long-range Coulomb coupling and the partial suppression of its second harmonic due to fast interparticle collisions. We de…
We model the magnetic ratchet effect in bilayer graphene in which a dc electric current is produced by an ac electric field of frequency $ω$ in the presence of a steady in-plane magnetic field and inversion-symmetry breaking. In bilayer graphene, the ratchet effect is tunable by an external metallic gate which breaks inversion symmetry. For zero in-plane magnetic field, we show that trigonal warping and inversion-symmetry breaking are able to produce a large dc valley current, but not a non-zero total dc charge current. For the magnetic ratchet in a tilted magnetic field, the perpendicular fie…
Intra-cell motion endows rich non-trivial phenomena to a wide variety of quantum materials. The most prominent example is a transverse current in the absence of a magnetic field (i.e. the anomalous Hall effect). Here we show that, in addition to a dc Hall effect, anomalous Hall materials possess circulating currents and cyclotron motion without magnetic field. These are generated from the intricate wavefunction dynamics within the unit cell, and correspond to interband transitions (coherences) in much the same way that cyclotron resonances arise from inter-Landau level transitions in magneto-o…
We report on absolute magneto-transmission experiments on highly-doped quasi-free-standing epitaxial graphene targeting the classical-to-quantum crossover of the cyclotron resonance. This study allows us to directly extract the carrier density and also other relevant quantities such as the quasiparticle velocity and the Drude weight, which is precisely measured from the strength of the cyclotron resonance. We find that the Drude weight is renormalized with respect to its non-interacting (or random-phase-approximation) value and that the renormalization is tied to the quasiparticle velocity enh…
The momentum transport in ultraclean bilayer graphene is characterized by the viscous transport. In quantizing magnetic field the momentum current passes through the guiding centers of cyclotron orbits. In this study we derive the quantized Hall viscosity of bilayer graphene that is the next topological feature after the quantum Hall effect. This can be detected in the non-local magnetoresistivity measurements that varies with the quantized steps of magnetoresistivity.
We investigate intra-Landau-level collective excitations in a bilayer disordered two-dimensional electron system exposed to a perpendicular magnetic field. The energy spectrum is calculated within the random phase approximation by taking into account electron-impurity scattering in the self-consistent Born approximation which includes consistent vertex corrections. Signatures of these bilayer excitations in drag and collective excitation measurements are identified.
The far-infrared absorption in two-dimensional electron layers subject to magnetic field of general orientation was studied theoretically. The Kubo formula was employed to derive diagonal components of the magneto-conductivity tensor of two-dimensional electron single-layers and double-layers. A parabolic quantum well was used to model single-layer systems. Bilayer systems were represented by a pair of tunnel-coupled, strictly two-dimensional quantum wells. Obtained results were compared to experimental data.
We propose an implementation of a valley selective electronic Veselago lens in bilayer graphene. We demonstrate that in the presence of an appropriately oriented potential step, low-energy electrons radiating from a point source can be re-focused coherently within the same band. The phenomenon is due to the trigonal warping of the band structure that leads to a negative refraction index. We show that the interference pattern can be controlled by an external mechanical strain.
The band structure, intra- and interband scattering processes of the electrons at the surface of a bismuth-bilayer on Bi$_2$Se$_3$ have been experimentally investigated by low-temperature Fourier-transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The observed complex quasiparticle interference patterns are compared to a simulation based on the spin-dependent joint density of states approach using the surface-localized spectral function calculated from first principles as the only input. Thereby, the origin of the quasiparticle interferences can be traced back to intraband scattering in the bismuth bil…
A parabolic quantum dot (QD) as realized by biasing nanostructured gates on bilayer graphene is investigated in the presence of electron-electron interaction. The energy spectrum and the phase diagram reveal unexpected transitions as function of a magnetic field. For example, in contrast to semiconductor QDs, we find a novel valley transition rather than only the usual singlet-triplet transition in the ground state of the interacting system. The origin of these new features can be traced to the valley degree of freedom in bilayer graphene. These transitions have important consequences for cycl…
We have measured the spin splitting in single-layer and bilayer graphene by means of tilted magnetic field experiments. Applying the Lifshitz-Kosevich formula for the spin-induced decrease of the Shubnikov de Haas amplitudes with increasing tilt angle we directly determine the product between the carrier cyclotron mass m* and the effective g-factor g* as a function of the charge carrier concentration. Using the cyclotron mass for a single-layer and a bilayer graphene we find an enhanced g-factor g* = 2.7 \pm 0.2 for both systems.
Using an effective Dirac model, we study the orbital Hall effect (OHE) in bilayers of transition metal dichalcogenides with 2H stacking (2H-TMD). We use first-order perturbation theory in the interlayer coupling of the bilayer system to obtain analytical expressions for the orbital Hall conductivity in the linear response regime. We use two distinct descriptions of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) operator: The first one is the intra-atomic approximation that considers only the intrasite contribution to the OAM [Cysne et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 056601 (2021)]. The second one uses the Berry…
Graphite, a model (semi)metal with trigonally warped bands, is investigated with magneto-absorption experiment and viewed as an electronic system in the vicinity of the Lifshitz transition. A characteristic pattern of up to twenty cyclotron resonance harmonics has been observed. This large number of resonances, their relative strengths and characteristic shapes trace the universal properties of the electronic states near a separatrix in the momentum space. Quantum-mechanical perturbative methods with respect to the trigonal warping term hardly describe the data which are, on the other hand, fa…
The interaction of intralayer and interlayer excitons is studied in a two-dimensional semiconductor, homobilayer MoS$_2$. It is shown that the measured optical susceptibility reveals both the magnitude and the sign of the coupling constants. The interlayer exciton interacts capacitively with the intralayer B-exciton (positive coupling constant) consistent with hole tunnelling from one monolayer to the other. Conversely, the interlayer exciton interacts inductively with the intralayer A-exciton (negative coupling constant). First-principles many-body calculations show that this coupling arises …
The electromagnetic characteristics of bilayer quantum Hall systems in the presence of interlayer coherence and tunneling are studied by means of a pseudospin-texture effective theory and an algebraic framework of the single-mode approximation, with emphasis on clarifying the nature of the low-lying neutral collective mode responsible for interlayer tunneling phenomena. A long-wavelength effective theory, consisting of the collective mode as well as the cyclotron modes, is constructed. It is seen explicitly from the electromagnetic response that gauge invariance is kept exact, this implying, i…
We investigate the effect that the intrinsic spin-orbit and the inter- and intra-layer Rashba interactions have on the energy spectrum of either an unbiased or a biased graphene bilayer. We find that under certain conditions, a Dirac cone is formed out of a parabolic band and that it is possible to create a "Mexican hat"-like energy dispersion in an unbiased bilayer. In addition, in the presence of only an intralayer Rashba interaction, the K (K') point splits into four distinct ones, contrarily to the case in single-layer graphene, where the splitting also takes place, but the low-energy disp…
We report the observation of the resonant excitation of edge photocurrents in bilayer graphene subjected to terahertz radiation and a magnetic field. The resonantly excited edge photocurrent is observed for both inter-band (at low carrier densities) and intra-band (at high densities) transitions between Landau levels (LL). While the intra-band LL transitions can be traced to the classical cyclotron resonance (CR) and produce strong resonant features, the inter-band-LL resonances have quantum nature and lead to the weaker features in the measured photocurrent spectra. The magnitude and polariza…
The semiclassical quantization of cyclotron orbits for two-dimensional Bloch electrons in a coupled two band model with a particle-hole symmetric spectrum is considered. As concrete examples, we study graphene (both mono and bilayer) and boron nitride. The main focus is on wave effects -- such as Berry phase and Maslov index -- occurring at order $\hbar$ in the semiclassical quantization and producing non-trivial shifts in the resulting Landau levels. Specifically, we show that the index shift appearing in the Landau levels is related to a topological part of the Berry phase -- which is basica…
Injection or optical generation of electrons and holes in graphene bilayers (GBLs) can result in the interband population inversion enabling the terahertz (THz) radiation lasing. The intraband radiative processes compete with the interband transitions. We demonstrate that remote doping enhances the indirect interband generation of photons in the proposed GBL heterostructures. Therefore such remote doping helps surpassing the intraband (Drude) absorption and results in large absolute values of the negative dynamic THz conductivity in a wide range of frequencies at elevated (including room) temp…
Breakdown of the quantum Hall effect (QHE) is commonly associated with an electric field approaching the inter Landau-level (LL) Zener field, ratio of the Landau gap and cyclotron radius. Eluded in semiconducting heterostructures, in spite of extensive investigation, the intrinsic Zener limit is reported here using high-mobility bilayer graphene and high-frequency current noise. We show that collective excitations arising from electron-electron interactions are essential. Beyond a noiseless ballistic QHE regime a large superpoissonian shot noise signals the breakdown via inter-LL scattering. T…
Hybridisation of electronic bands of two-dimensional materials, assembled into twistronic heterostructures, enables one to tune their optoelectronic properties by selecting conditions for resonant interlayer hybridisation. Resonant interlayer hybridisation qualitatively modifies the excitons in such heterostructures, transforming these optically active modes into superposition states of interlayer and intralayer excitons. For MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterostructures, strong hybridization occurs between the holes in the spin-split valence band of WSe$_2$ and in the top valence band of MoSe$_2$, especi…
We study effects of tilted magnetic fields on energy levels in a double-quantum-well (DQW) system, focusing on the coupling of subbands and Landau levels (LLs). The subband-LL coupling induces anticrossings between LLs, manifested directly in the magnetoresistance. The anticrossing gap becomes larger than the spin splitting at the tilting angle $θ\sim 20^\circ $ and larger than the cyclotron energy at $θ\sim 50^\circ $, demonstrating that the subband-LL coupling exerts a strong influence on quantum Hall states even in at a relatively small $θ$ and plays a dominant role for larger $θ$. We also …
The pseudo-spin model for double layer quantum Hall system with total landau level filling factor $ν=1$ is discussed. Unlike the "traditional" one where interlayer voltage enters as static magnetic field along pseudo- spin hard axis, in our model we consider applied interlayer voltage as a frequency of precessing pseudo-magnetic field lying into the easy plane. It is shown that a Landau-Lifshitz equation for the considered pseudo magnetic system well describes existing experimental data. Besides that, the mentioned model predicts novel directed intra-layer transport phenomenon in the system: u…
We have found that the Berry phase of bilayer graphene becomes from 2$π$ estimated by Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations when the A-B stacked pristine bilayer graphene experiences the Li-intercalation and sequential Li-desorption process in ultrahigh vacuum. Furthermore, the mobility of such processed bilayer graphene increases around four times larger, ~ 8,000 cm2/V$\cdot$s, than that of the pristine bilayer graphene. This is mainly due to increment of the scattering time and decrement of the cyclotron mass, which can be interpreted as a result of the change of the stacking structure of bilayer g…
Double layer graphene is a gapless semiconductor which develops a finite gap when the layers are placed at different electrostatic potentials. We study, within the tight-biding approximation, the electronic properties of the gaped graphene bilayer in the presence of disorder, perpendicular magnetic field, and transverse electric field. We show that the gap is rather stable in the presence of diagonal disorder. We compute the cyclotron effective mass in the semi-classical approximation, valid at low magnetic fields. Landau level formation is clearly seen in zigzag and armchair ribbons of the ga…
We consider confinement of Dirac fermions in $AB$-stacked bilayer graphene by inhomogeneous on-site interactions, (pseudo-)magnetic field or inter-layer interaction. Working within the framework of four-band approximation, we focus on the systems where the stationary equation is reducible into two stationary equations with $2\times2$ Dirac-type Hamiltonians and auxiliary interactions. We show that it is possible to find localized states by solving an effective Schrödinger equation with energy-dependent potential. We consider several scenarios where bilayer graphene is subject to inhomogneous (…
Exciton condensation in an electron-hole bilayer system of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides is analyzed at three different levels of theory to account for screening and quasiparticle renormalization. The large effective masses of the transition metal dichalcogenides place them in a strong coupling regime. In this regime, mean field (MF) theory with either an unscreened or screened interlayer interaction predicts a room temperature condensate. Interlayer and intralayer interactions renormalize the quasiparticle dispersion, and this effect is included in a GW approximation. The renorma…
The gapless energy band spectra make the structures based on graphene and graphene bilayers with the population inversion created by optical or injection pumping to be promising media for the interband terahertz (THz) lasing. However, a strong intraband absorption at THz frequencies still poses a challenge for efficient THz lasing. In this paper, we show that in the pumped graphene bilayer structures, the indirect interband radiative transitions accompanied by scattering of carriers caused by disorder can provide a substantial negative contribution to the THz conductivity (together with the di…
The influence of microwave radiation on the DC-magnetoresistance of 2D-electrons is studied in the regime beyond the recently discovered zero resistance states when the cyclotron frequency exceeds the radiation frequency. Radiation below 30 GHz causes a strong suppression of the resistance over a wide magnetic field range, whereas higher frequencies produce a non-monotonic behavior in the damping of the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. These observations are explained by the creation of a non-equilibrium electron distribution function by microwave induced intra-Landau level transitions.
We study the collective modes of the quantum Hall states in undoped bilayer graphene in a strong perpendicular magnetic and electric field. Both for the well-known ferromagnetic state that is relevant for small electric field $E_\perp$ and the analogous valley/layer polarized one suitable for large $E_\perp$, the low energy physics is dominated by magnetoexcitons with zero angular momentum that are even combinations of excitons that conserve Landau orbitals. We identify a long wave length instability in both states, and argue that there is an intermediate range of the electric field $E^{(1)}_\…
We investigate the dependence of the optical conductivity of bilayer graphene (BLG) on the intra- and inter-layer interactions using the most complete model to date. We show that the next nearest-neighbor intralayer coupling introduces new features in the low-energy spectrum that are highly sensitive to sample doping, changing significantly the ``universal'' conductance. Further, its interplay with interlayer couplings leads to an anisotropy in conductance in the ultraviolet range. We propose that experimental measurement of the optical conductivity of intrinsic and doped BLG will provide a go…
PH Pfaffian topological phase may exist in a uniform system due to strong Landau level (LL) mixing according to theoretical predictions based on the Son - Dirac composite fermion theory. Numerical investigations in the presence of large LL mixing are limited due to numerical complexities, when taking into account at least one more LL. Because of this, we apply the same field theoretical approach to the quantum Hall bilayer at total filling factor equal to one, for which many numerical studies exist. The most recent work in the torus geometry predicts an intermediate phase (for intermediate dis…
We present a theoretical study of the bandstructure and Landau levels in bilayer graphene at low energies in the presence of a transverse magnetic field and Rashba spin-orbit interaction in the regime of negligible trigonal distortion. Within an effective low energy approach (Löwdin partitioning theory) we derive an effective Hamiltonian for bilayer graphene that incorporates the influence of the Zeeman effect, the Rashba spin-orbit interaction, and inclusively, the role of the intrinsic spin-orbit interaction on the same footing. Particular attention is spent to the energy spectrum and Landau…
Recent inelastic neutron diffraction measurements on Cr$_2$(Te, W, Mo)O$_6$ have revealed that these systems consist of bilayers of spin-3/2 Cr$^{3+}$ ions with strong antiferromagnetic inter-bilayer coupling and tuneable intra-bilayer coupling from ferro (for W and Mo) to antiferro (for Te). These measurements have determined the ground state spin structure and the values of sublattice magnetization, which shows significant reduction of sublattice magnetization from the atomic spin value of 3.0$μ_B$ for Cr$^{3+}$ atoms. In an earlier paper we theoretically investigated the low temperature spi…
We present a description of bilayers and quasi-three dimensional stacks of Jain series of fractional quantum Hall states using their parton descriptions, and argue for them as candidate states when the interlayer Coulombic interaction is comparable to the intralayer Coulomb interaction. For the bilayers, a K-matrix theory is presented and shown to be different from decoupled or bonded layers. The quasi-3D systems have gapless gauge excitations and gapped partons that may be able to move about in the 3D, thus presenting a toy model for quantum Hall-like states in three dimensions.
The intrinsic spin-orbit interactions in bilayer graphene and in graphite are studied, using a tight binding model, and an intraatomic LS coupling. The spin-orbit interactions in bilayer graphene and graphite are larger, by about one order of magnitude, than the interactions in single layer graphene, due to the mixing of pi and sigma bands by interlayer hopping. Their value is in the range 0.1 - 1K. The spin-orbit coupling opens a gap in bilayer graphene, and it also gives rise to two edge modes. The spin-orbit couplings are largest, 1-4K, in orthorhombic graphite, which does not have a center…
We use the T-matrix approximation to analyze the effect of a localized impurity on the local density of states in mono- and bilayer graphene. For monolayer graphene the Friedel oscillations generated by intranodal scattering obey an inverse-square law, while the internodal ones obey an inverse law. In the Fourier transform this translates into a filled circle of high intensity in the center of the Brillouin zone, and empty circular contours around its corners. For bilayer graphene both types of oscillations obey an inverse law.
This paper presents a mathematical and numerical analysis of the flatband wavefunctions occurring in the chiral model of twisted bilayer graphene at the "magic" twist angles. We show that the chiral model possesses an exact intra-valley inversion symmetry. Writing the flatband wavefunction as a product of a lowest Landau level quantum Hall state and a spinor, we show that the components of the spinor are anti-quantum Hall wavefunctions related by the inversion symmetry operation introduced here. We then show numerically that as one moves from the lowest to higher magic angles, the spinor compo…
We present an elaborate and systematic study of the conductance properties of a zigzag bilayer graphene nanoribbon modeled by a Kane-Mele (KM) Hamiltonian. The interplay of the Rashba and the intrinsic spin-orbit couplings with the edge states, electronic band structures, charge and spin transport are explored in details. We have analytically derived the conditions for the edge states for a bilayer KM nanoribbon and show how these modes decay for lattice sites inside the bulk. It is particularly interesting to note that for a finite-size ribbon an even number of zigzag ribbon hosts a finite en…
Flat bands in twisted moire superlattices support a variety of topological and strongly correlated phenomena along with easily tunable electrical and optical properties. Here, we demonstrate the existence of tunable, long-lived, and flat intraband and interband terahertz plasmons in twisted double bilayer graphene. We show that the interband plasmons originate from the presence of a Van Hove singularity in the joint density of states and a finite Berry connection between the pair of bands involved. We find that the gapped interband plasmon mode has a universal dispersion, and the plasmon gap i…
Optical absorption properties of magnetoexcitons in topological insulator bilayers under a strong magnetic field are theoretically studied. A general analytical formula of optical absorption selection rule is obtained in the noninteracting as well as Coulomb intra-Landau-level interacting cases, which remarkably helps to interpret the resonant peaks in absorption spectroscopy and the corresponding formation of Dirac-type magnetoexcitons. We also discuss the optical absorption spectroscopy of magnetoexcitons in the presence of inter-Landau-level Coulomb interaction, which becomes more complex. …
The tight-binding model is closely associated with the modified layer-based random-phase approximation to thoroughly investigate the electron-electron interactions in sliding bilayer graphene. The Coulomb interactions and intralayer and interlayer atomic interactions dominate the collective and electron-hole excitations. The unusual energy bands are directly reflected in the diverse transferred momentum-frequency phase diagrams. In general, there exist two kinds of plasmon modes during the variation of the doping level in sliding bilayer graphene, being accompanied with the complicated intraba…
The effective mass and superfluidity-normal phase transition temperature of magnetoexcitons in topological insulator bilayers are theoretically investigated. The intra-Landau-level Coulomb interaction is treated perturbatively, from which the effective magnetoexciton mass is analytically discussed. The inclusion of inter-Landau-level Coulomb interaction by more exact numerical diagonalization of the Hamiltonian brings out important modifications to magnetoexciton properties, which are specially characterized by prominent reduction in the magnetoexciton effective mass and promotion in the super…
A graphene bilayer in a transverse magnetic field has a set of Landau levels with energies $E=\pm \sqrt{N(N+1)}\hslash ω_{c}^{\ast}$ where $ω_{c}^{\ast}$ is the effective cyclotron frequency and $% N=0,1,2,...$ All Landau levels but N=0 are four times degenerate counting spin and valley degrees of freedom. The Landau level N=0 has an extra degeneracy due to the fact that orbitals $n=0$ and $n=1$ both have zero kinetic energies. At integer filling factors, Coulomb interactions produce a set of broken-symmetry states with partial or full alignement in space of the valley and orbital pseudospins.…
A Raman study of a back gated bilayer graphene sample is presented. The changes in the Fermi level induced by charge transfer splits the Raman G-band, hardening its higher component and softening the lower one. These two components are associated with the symmetric (S) and anti-symmetric vibration (AS) of the atoms in the two layers, the later one becoming Raman active due to inversion symmetry breaking. The phonon hardening and softening are explained by considering the selective coupling of the S and AS phonons with interband and intraband electron-hole pairs.
On the basis of tight-binding lattice model, the edge states of monolayer and bilayer graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with different edge terminations are studied. The effects of edge-hopping modulation, spin-orbital coupling (SOC), and bias voltage on bilayer GNRs are discussed. We observe the following: (i) Some new extra edge states can be created by edge-hopping modulation for monolayer GNRs. (ii) Intralayer Rashba SOC plays a role in depressing the band energy gap $E_g$ opened by intrinsic SOC for both monolayer and bilayer GNRs. An almost linear dependent relation, i.e., $E_g\sim λ_R$, is fo…
In twisted bilayer graphene, long-wavelength lattice fluctuations on the scale of the moiré period are dominated by phason modes, i.e., acoustic branches of the incommensurate lattice resulting from coherent superpositions of optical phonons. In the limit of small twist angles, these modes describe the sliding motion of stacking domain walls separating regions of partial commensuration. The resulting soliton network is a soft elastic manifold, whose reduced rigidity arises from the competition between intralayer (elastic) and interlayer (adhesion) forces governing lattice relaxation. Shear def…
We develop a proposal to realise a widely tunable and clean quantum phase transition in bilayer graphene between two paradigmatic fractionalized phases of matter: the Moore-Read fractional quantum Hall state and the composite Fermi liquid metal. This transition can be realized at total fillings $ν=\pm 3+1/2$ and the critical point can be controllably accessed by tuning either the interlayer electric bias or the perpendicular magnetic field values over a wide range of parameters. We study the transition numerically within a model that contains all leading single particle corrections to the band…
Gapped bilayer graphene can support the presence of intragap states due to kink gate potentials applied to the graphene layers. Electrons in these states display valley-momentum locking, which makes them attractive for topological valleytronics. Here, we show that kink-antikink local potentials enable modulated scattering of topological currents. We find that the kink-antikink coupling leads to anomalous steps in the junction conductance. Further, when the constriction detaches from the propagating modes, forming a loop, the conductance reveals the system energy spectrum. Remarkably, these kin…
