The band structure, intra- and interband scattering processes of the electrons at the surface of a bismuth-bilayer on Bi$_2$Se$_3$ have been experimentally investigated by low-temperature Fourier-transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The observed complex quasiparticle interference patterns are compared to a simulation based on the spin-dependent joint density of states approach using the surface-localized spectral function calculated from first principles as the only input. Thereby, the origin of the quasiparticle interferences can be traced back to intraband scattering in the bismuth bilayer valence band and Bi$_2$Se$_3$ conduction band, and to interband scattering between the two-dimensional topological state and the bismuth-bilayer valence band. The investigation reveals that the bilayer band gap, which is predicted to host one-dimensional topological states at the edges of the bilayer, is pushed several hundred milli-electronvolts above the Fermi level. This result is rationalized by an electron transfer from the bilayer to Bi$_2$Se$_3$ which also leads to a two-dimensional electron state in the Bi$_2$Se$_3$ conduction band with a strong Rashba spin-splitting, coexisting with the topological state and bilayer valence band.
Hall effects are investigated for three-dimensional Dirac electrons as a model of bismuth alloys. It is found that there is unconventional contributions to the Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$ generated by the interband effects of a magnetic field. This phenomena is remarkable near the band-edge. The Hall coefficient exhibits two unexpected properties; a sharp peak at around the band-edges, and a drastic sign change in the band gap region. Implications of the present results to bismuth alloys are discussed.
The aim of this model study of the electron-phonon coupling in graphene was to find out about the relative importance of the inter- and intraband scattering and which phonon modes are the most active. This was achieved by analyzing the electron-phonon matrix element of the carbon dimer in the unit cell. We found that for the intra molecular orbital matrix elements the longitudinal optical phonon mode is the active phonon mode. The matrix element corresponding to sigma to sigma is greater than the matrix element for pi to pi . The inter molecular orbital scattering pi to sigma is driven by the …
We show that electron-hole correlation can be used to tune interband and intraband optical transition rates in semiconductor nanostructures with at least one weakly confined direction. The valence-to-conduction band transition rate can be enhanced by a factor $(L/a_B)^{N}$ -- with $L$ the length of the weakly confined direction, $a_B$ the exciton Bohr radius and $N$ the dimensionality of the nanostructure -- while the rate of intraband and inter-valence-band transitions can be slowed down by the inverse factor, $(a_B/L)^{N}$. Adding a hitherto underexplored degree of freedom to engineer excito…
The absorption of heavily doped graphene in the terahertz (THz) and mid-infrared (MIR) spectral regions is considered taking into account both the elastic scattering due to finite-range disorder and the variations of concentration due to long-range disorder. Interplay between intra- and interband transitions is analyzed for the high-frequency regime of response, near the Pauli blocking threshold. The gate voltage and temperature dependencies of the absorption efficiency are calculated. It is demonstrated that for typical parameters, the smearing of the interband absorption edge is determined b…
Flat bands in twisted moire superlattices support a variety of topological and strongly correlated phenomena along with easily tunable electrical and optical properties. Here, we demonstrate the existence of tunable, long-lived, and flat intraband and interband terahertz plasmons in twisted double bilayer graphene. We show that the interband plasmons originate from the presence of a Van Hove singularity in the joint density of states and a finite Berry connection between the pair of bands involved. We find that the gapped interband plasmon mode has a universal dispersion, and the plasmon gap i…
Injection or optical generation of electrons and holes in graphene bilayers (GBLs) can result in the interband population inversion enabling the terahertz (THz) radiation lasing. The intraband radiative processes compete with the interband transitions. We demonstrate that remote doping enhances the indirect interband generation of photons in the proposed GBL heterostructures. Therefore such remote doping helps surpassing the intraband (Drude) absorption and results in large absolute values of the negative dynamic THz conductivity in a wide range of frequencies at elevated (including room) temp…
Using previously developed exciton scattering model accounting for the interband, i.e., exciton-biexciton, Coulomb interactions in semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs), we derive a closed set of equations for 2D double-quantum coherence signal. The signal depends on the Liouville space pathways which include both the interband scattering processes and the inter- and intraband optical transitions. These processes correspond to the formation of different cross-peaks in the 2D spectra. We further report on our numerical calculations of the 2D signal using reduced level scheme parameterized for PbSe N…
We analyze intrinsic nonlinearities in two-dimensional polaritonic materials interacting with an optical wave. Focusing on the case of graphene, we show that the second-order nonlinear optical conductivity due to carrier density fluctuations associated with the excitation of a plasmon polariton is closely related to the ponderomotive force due to the oscillating optical field. This relation is first established through an elegant thermodynamic approach for a Drude-like plasma, in the frequency range where intraband scattering is the dominant contribution to conductivity. Subsequently, we exten…
The gapless energy band spectra make the structures based on graphene and graphene bilayers with the population inversion created by optical or injection pumping to be promising media for the interband terahertz (THz) lasing. However, a strong intraband absorption at THz frequencies still poses a challenge for efficient THz lasing. In this paper, we show that in the pumped graphene bilayer structures, the indirect interband radiative transitions accompanied by scattering of carriers caused by disorder can provide a substantial negative contribution to the THz conductivity (together with the di…
Bismuth crystal is known for its remarkable properties resulting from particular electronic states, e. g., the Shubnikov-de Haas effect and the de Haas-van Alphen effect. Above all, the large diamagnetism of bismuth had been a long-standing puzzle soon after the establishment of quantum mechanics, which had been resolved eventually in 1970 based on the effective Hamiltonian derived by Wolff as due to the interband effects of a magnetic field in the presence of a large spin-orbit interaction. This Hamiltonian is essentially the same as the Dirac Hamiltonian, but with spatial anisotropy and an e…
Electron Raman scattering (ERS) is investigated in a parabolic semiconductor quantum wire in a transverse magnetic field neglecting by phonon-assisted transitions. The ERS cross-section is calculated as a function of a frequency shift and magnetic field. The process involves an interband electronic transition and an intraband transition between quantized subbands. We analyze the differential cross-section for different scattering configurations. We study selection rules for the processes. Some singularities in the Raman spectra are found and interpreted. The scattering spectrum shows density-o…
We have measured the far-infrared reflectivity and Kerr angle spectra on a high-quality crystal of pure semimetallic bismuth as a function of magnetic field, from which we extract the conductivity for left- and right handed circular polarisations. The high spectral resolution allows us to separate the intraband Landau level transitions for electrons and holes. The hole transition exhibits 100% magnetic circular dichroism, it appears only for one polarisation as expected for a circular cyclotron orbit. However the dichroism for electron transitions is reduced to only $13\pm 1$%, which is quanti…
We present a theoretical study on the Landau levels (LLs) and magneto-optical absorption of a two-dimensional semi-Dirac electron system under a perpendicular magnetic field. Based on an effective k.p Hamiltonian, we find that the LLs are proportional to the two-thirds power law of the magnetic field and level index, which can be understood as a hybridization of the LL of Schrodinger and Dirac electrons with new features. With the help of Kubo formula, we find the selection rule for interband (intraband) magneto-optical transition is anisotropic (isotropic). Specifically, the selection rules f…
We theoretically reveal a new mechanism of light amplification in graphene under the conditions of interband population inversion. It is enabled by the indirect interband transitions, with the photon emission preceded or followed by the scattering on disorder. The emerging contribution to the optical conductivity, which we call the interband Drude conductivity, appears to be negative for the photon energies below the double quasi-Fermi energy of pumped electrons and holes. We find that for the Gaussian correlated distribution of scattering centers, the real part of the net Drude conductivity (…
The theory of spin orientation of two-dimensional (2D) electron gas has been developed for intrasubband indirect optical transitions. The monopolar optical orientation of electrons in the conduction band is caused by the indirect scattering with virtual intermediate states in the valence band and allowance for selection rules for interband transitions. The considered mechanism of optical orientation is shown to be in an inherent relation with the special Elliot-Yafet mechanism of electron spin relaxation induced by virtual interband scattering.
We theoretically study the spin susceptibility of Dirac semimetals using the linear response theory. The spin susceptibility is decomposed into an intraband contribution and an interband contribution. We obtain analytical expressions for the intraband and interband contributions of massless Dirac fermions. The spin susceptibility is independent of the Fermi energy while it depends on the cutoff energy, which is introduced to regularize the integration. We find that the cutoff energy is appropriately determined by comparing the results for the Wilson-Dirac lattice model, which approximates the …
Within linear-response theory we derive a response function that thoroughly takes into account the influence of elastic scattering and is valid beyond the long-wavelength limit. We apply the theo-ry to plasmons in graphene and the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), in the random-phase ap-proximation, and for the former take into account intraband and interband excitations. The scatte-ring-modified dispersion relation shows that below a critical scattering strength $γ_c$, simply related to the plasmon frequency $ω$, no plasmons are allowed. The critical strengths $γ_c$ and the allowed $(ω, q)…
We investigate the role of pseudospin structure of few-layer black phosphorus (BP) in interband tunneling properties in lateral BP junctions. We find that interband tunneling is critically dependent on junction directions because of the anisotropic pseudospin structure of BP. When the armchair direction of BP is normal to the interface, pseudospins of incident and transmitted carriers are nearly aligned so that interband tunneling is highly effective, analogous to the Klein tunneling in graphene. However, when the zigzag direction is normal to the interface, interband tunneling is suppressed b…
Electron-hole generation and recombination rates for intravalley and intervalley phonon scattering in Graphene are presented. The transverse and the longitudinal optical phonon modes ($E_{2g}$-modes) near the zone center ($Γ$-point) contribute to intravalley interband carrier scattering. At the zone edge ($K(K')$-point), only the transverse optical phonon mode ($A'_{1}$-mode) contributes significantly to intervalley interband scattering with recombination rates faster than those due to zone center phonons. The calculated recombination times range from less than a picosecond to more than hundre…
In transition metal dichalcogenides the spin-orbit interaction affects differently the conduction and valence band energies as functions of $k$ and the band gap is large. Consequently, when a perpendicular magnetic field $B$ is applied the conduction and valence band Landau levels are also different and this leads to a splitting of the interband optical absorption lines in both the absence and presence of an external electric field $E_{z}$. When $B$ and $E_{z}$ are present the peaks in the imaginary part of the Hall conductivity give two distinct contributions of opposite sign to the interband…
It has been suggested that the enlarged spin susceptibility in topological insulators, described by Van Vleck's formalism, accounts for the ferromagnetism of bismuth-antimony topological chalcogenides doped with transition metal impurities. In contrast, earlier studies of HgTe and related topological systems pointed out that the interband analog of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction (the Bloembergen-Rowland mechanism) leads to antiferromagnetic coupling between pairs of localized spins. Here, we critically revisit these two approaches, show their shortcomings, and elucidate why the …
The interfacial band structures of multilayer systems play a crucial role for the ultrafast charge and spin carrier dynamics at interfaces. Here, we study the energy- and momentum-dependent quasiparticle lifetimes of excited states of a lead monolayer film on Ag(111) prior and after the adsorption of a monolayer of 3,4,9,10-perylene-tetracarboxylic-dianhydride (PTCDA). Using time-resolved two-photon momentum microscopy, we show that the electron dynamics of the bare Pb/Ag(111) bilayer system is dominated by isotropic intraband scattering processes within the quantum well state as well as inter…
We have studied the BiCu$_2$/Cu(111) surface alloy using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. We observed standing waves caused by scattering off defects and step edges. Different from previous studies on similar Rashba-type surfaces, we identified multiple scattering vectors that originate from various intraband as well as interband scattering processes. A detailed energy-dependent analysis of the standing-wave patterns enables a quantitative determination of band dispersions, including the Rashba splitting. The results are in good agreement with ARPES data and demo…
Motivated by recent experiments observing a large antidamping spin-orbit torque (SOT) on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator, we investigate the origin of the current-induced SOT beyond linear-response theory. We find that a strong antidamping SOT arises from intraband transitions in non-linear response, and does not require interband transitions as is the case in linear transport mechanisms. The joint effect of warping and an in-plane magnetization generates a non-linear antidamping SOT which can exceed the intrinsic one by several orders of magnitude, depending on warpin…
Conductivity in a multiband system can be divided into intra- and interband contributions, and the latter further into symmetric and antisymmetric parts. In a flat band, intraband conductivity vanishes and the antisymmetric interband contribution, proportional to the Berry curvature, corresponds to the anomalous Hall effect. We investigate whether the symmetric interband conductivity, related to the quantum metric, can be finite in the zero frequency and flat band limit. Starting from the Kubo-Greenwood formula with a finite scattering rate $η$, we show that the DC conductivity is zero in a fl…
We study the peculiarities of coherency in a two-gap superconductor. The both intraband couplings, inducing superconductivity in the independent bands, and interband pair-transfer interaction have been taken into account. On the basis of the Ginzburg-Landau equations derived from the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations and the relevant self-consistency conditions for a two-gap system, we find critical and non-critical coherence lengths in the spatial behaviour of the fluctuations of order parameters. The character of the temperature dependencies of these length scales is determined by the relative …
We theoretically examine the effect of carrier-carrier scattering processes (electron-hole and electron-electron) on the intraband radiation absorption and their contribution to the net dynamic conductivity in optically or electrically pumped graphene. We demonstrate that the radiation absorption assisted by the carrier-carrier scattering can be stronger than the Drude absorption due to the carrier scattering on disorder. Since the intraband absorption of radiation effectively competes with its interband amplification, this can substantially affect the conditions of the negative dynamic conduc…
The electronic and optical conductivities for anisotropic tilted Dirac semimetals are calculated using the Kubo formula. As in graphene, it is shown that the minimal conductivity is sensitive to the order in which the temperature, frequency and scattering limits are taken. Both intraband and interband scattering are found to be direction dependent. In the high frequency and low temperature limit, the conductivities do not depend on frequency and are weighted by the anisotropy in such a way that the geometrical mean $\sqrt{σ_{xx}σ_{yy}}$ of the conductivity is the same as in graphene. This resu…
We present a general formalism for investigating the second-order optical response of solids to an electric field in weakly disordered crystals with arbitrarily complicated band structures based on density-matrix equations of motion, on a Born approximation treatment of disorder, and on an expansion in scattering rate to leading non-trivial order. One of the principal aims of our work is to enable extensive transport theory applications that accounts fully for the interplay between electric-field-induced interband and intraband coherence, and Bloch-state scattering. The quasiparticle bands are…
We analyze the features of the graphene mono- and multilayer reflectance in the far-infrared region as a function of frequency, temperature, and carrier density taking the intraband conductance and the interband electron absorbtion into account. The dispersion of plasmon mode of the multilayers is calculated using Maxwell's equations with the influence of retardation included. At low temperatures and high electron densities, the reflectance of multilayers as a function of frequency has the sharp downfall and the subsequent deep well due to the threshold of electron interband absorbtion.
The quantum metric is a central quantity of band theory but has so far not been related to many response coefficients due to its nonclassical origin. However, within a newly developed Kubo formalism for fast relaxation, the decomposition of the dc electrical conductivity into both classical (intraband) and quantum (interband) contributions recently revealed that the interband part is proportional to the quantum metric. Here, we show that interband effects due to the quantum metric can be significantly enhanced and even dominate the conductivity for semimetals at charge neutrality and for syste…
We investigate Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)- Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover in a two-band superfluid Fermi gas with an energy shift between the bands. When the intraband coupling in the cold (first) band is fixed as weak, we find that in the case of vanishing interband interaction and in the strong-coupling limit of the hot (second) band the system undergoes a transition to a single-component configuration with the full suppression of the first energy gap and with the full redistribution of particles between bands. For non-vanishing interband interaction we reveal the non-monoto…
Multiphoton interaction of coherent electromagnetic radiation with 2D metallic carriers confined on the surface of the 3D topological insulator is considered. A microscopic theory describing the nonlinear interaction of a strong wave and metallic carriers with many-body Coulomb interaction is developed. The set of integrodifferential equations for the interband polarization and carrier occupation distribution is solved numerically. Multiphoton excitation of Fermi-Dirac sea of 2D massless carriers is considered for a THz pump wave. It is shown that in the moderately strong pump wave field along…
Topological flat bands, valley polarization, and interband superconductivity in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene with proximitized spin-orbit couplings
Gold nanoparticles emit broad-band upconverted luminescence upon irradiation with pulsed infrared laser radiation. Although the phenomenon is widely observed, considerable disagreement still exists concerning the underlying physics - most notably over the applicability of concepts such as multiphoton absorption, inelastic scattering, and interband and intraband electronic transitions. Here, we study single particles and small clusters of particles by employing a spectrally resolved power-law analysis of the irradiation-dependent emission as a sensitive probe of these physical models. Two regim…
We present a full derivation of the interaction Hamiltonian for holes in silicon within the six-band envelope-function scheme, which appropriately describes the valence band close to the $\boldsymbolΓ$ point. The full structure of the single-hole eigenstates is taken into account, including the Bloch part. The scattering processes caused by the Coulomb interaction are shown to be both intraband and interband, the latter being mostly short-ranged. In the asymptotic long-range limit, the effective potential tends to the screened Coulomb potential, and becomes purely intraband, as assumed in prev…
TaIrTe$_4$ is an example of a candidate Weyl type-II semimetal with a minimal possible number of Weyl nodes. Four nodes are reported to exist a single plane in $k$-space. The existence of a conical dispersion linked to Weyl nodes has yet to be shown experimentally. Here we use optical spectroscopy as a probe of the band structure on a low-energy scale. Studying optical conductivity allows us to probe intraband and interband transitions with zero momentum. In TaIrTe$_4$, we observe a narrow Drude contribution and an interband conductivity that may be consistent with a tilted linear band dispers…
Superfluidity has recently been reported in double electron-hole bilayer graphene. The multiband nature of the bilayers is important because of the very small band gaps between conduction and valence bands. The long range nature of the superfluid pairing interaction means that screening must be fully taken into account. We have carried out a systematic mean-field investigation that includes (i) contributions to screening from both intraband and interband excitations, (ii) the low-energy band structure of bilayer graphene with its small band gap and flattened Mexican hat-like low-energy bands, …
Twisted bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides are ideal platforms to study flat-band phenomena. In this paper, we investigate flat-band plasmons in the hole-doped twisted bilayer MoS$_2$ (tb-MoS$_2$) by employing a full tight-binding model and the random phase approximation. When considering lattice relaxations in tb-MoS$_2$, the flat band is not separated from remote valence bands, which makes the contribution of interband transitions in transforming the plasmon dispersion and energy significantly different. In particular, low-damped and quasi-flat plasmons emerge if we only consider intra…
Two-dimensional materials with hexagonal symmetry such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides} are unique materials to study light-field-controlled electron dynamics inside of a solid. Around the $K$-point, the dispersion relation represents an ideal system to study intricately coupled intraband motion and interband (Landau-Zener) transitions driven by the optical field of phase-controlled few-cycle laser pulses. Based on the coupled nature of the intraband and interband processes, we have recently observed in graphene repeated coherent Landau-Zener transitions between valence and co…
The tight-binding model is closely associated with the modified layer-based random-phase approximation to thoroughly investigate the electron-electron interactions in sliding bilayer graphene. The Coulomb interactions and intralayer and interlayer atomic interactions dominate the collective and electron-hole excitations. The unusual energy bands are directly reflected in the diverse transferred momentum-frequency phase diagrams. In general, there exist two kinds of plasmon modes during the variation of the doping level in sliding bilayer graphene, being accompanied with the complicated intraba…
Bloch electrons in multiorbital systems carry nontrivial quantum geometric information characteristic of their orbital composition as a function of their wave vector. When such electrons form Cooper pairs, the resultant superconducting state naturally inherits aspects of the quantum geometry. In this paper, we study how this geometric character is revealed in the intrinsic optical response of the superconducting state. In particular, due to the superconducting gap opening, interband optical transitions involving states around the Fermi level are forbidden. This generally leads to an anomalous …
We investigate the in-plane spin relaxation of electrons due to the D'yakonov-Perel' and Elliot-Yafet mechanisms including the intra- and inter-valley processes in monolayer MoS$_2$. We construct the effective Hamiltonian for the conduction band using the Löwdin partition method from the anisotropic two-band Hamiltonian with the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling of the conduction band included. The spin-orbit coupling of the conduction band induces the intra- and inter-valley D'yakonov-Perel' spin relaxation. In addition, the Elliot-Yafet spin relaxation also takes place due to the interband spin …
