We examine the quantum phase diagram of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in the lowest two Landau levels in half-filled bilayer structures as a function of tunneling strength and layer separation, i.e., we revisit the lowest Landau level filling factor 1/2 bilayer problem and make new predictions involving bilayers in the half-filled second Landau level (i.e., filling factor 5/2). Using numerical exact diagonalization we investigate the important question of whether this system supports a FQHE described by the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state in the strong tunneling regime. In the lowest Landau level, we find that although in principle, increasing (decreasing) tunneling strength (layer separation) could lead to a transition from the Abelian two-component Halperin 331 to non-Abelian one-component Moore-Read Pfaffian state, the FQHE excitation gap is relatively small in the lowest Landau level Pfaffian regime--we establish that all so far observed FQHE states in half-filled lowest Landau level bilayers are most likely described by the Abelian Halperin 331 state. In the second Landau level we make the prediction that bilayer structures would manifest two distinct branches of incompressible FQHE corresponding to the Abelian 331 state (at moderate to low tunneling and large layer separation) and the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state (at large tunneling and small layer separation). The observation of these two FQHE branches and the possible quantum phase transition between them will be compelling evidence supporting the existence of the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state in the second Landau level. We discuss our results in the context of existing experiments and theoretical works.
We examine the quantum phase diagram of the fractional quantum Hall effect in the lowest Landau level in half-filled bilayer structures as a function of tunneling strength and layer separation. Using numerical exact diagonalization we investigate the important question of whether this system supports a fractional quantum Hall effect described by the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state in the strong tunneling regime. We find that, although it is in principle possible, it is unlikely that the non-Abelian FQHE exists in the lowest Landau level. We establish that all so far observed FQHE states …
The quantum Hall phase diagram of the half-filled bilayer system in the second Landau level is studied as a function of tunneling and layer separation using exact diagonalization. We make the striking prediction that bilayer structures would manifest two distinct branches of incompressible fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) corresponding to the Abelian 331 state (at moderate to low tunneling and large layer separation) and the non-Abelian Pfaffian state (at large tunneling and small layer separation). The observation of these two FQHE branches and the quantum phase transition between them w…
We systematically discuss properties of quantum disordered states of the quantum Hall bilayer at ν_T = 1. For one of them, so-called vortex metal state, we find ODLRO (off-diagonal long-range order) of algebraic kind, and derive its transport properties. It is shown that this state is relevant for the explanation of the "imperfect" superfluid behavior, and persistent intercorrelations, for large distances between layers, that were found in experiments.
We consider the two lowest Landau levels at half filling. In the higher Landau level (nu =5/2), we find a first order phase transition separating a compressible striped phase from a paired quantum Hall state, which is identified as the Moore-Read state. The critical point is very near the Coulomb potential and the transition can be driven by increasing the width of the electron layer. We find a much weaker transition (either second order or a crossover) from pairing to the composite fermion Fermi liquid behavior. A very similar picture is obtained for the lowest Landau level but the transition…
We consider a fully spin-polarized quantum Hall system with no interlayer tunneling at total filling factor $ν=1/k$ (where $k$ is an odd integer) using the Chern-Simons-Ginzburg-Landau theory. Exploiting particle-vortex duality and the concept of quantum disordering, we find a large number of possible compressible and incompressible ground states, some of which may have relevance to recent experiments of Spielman {\it et.al.}. We find interlayer coherent compressible states without Hall quantization and interlayer-incoherent incompressible with Hall quantization in addition to the usual $(k,k,…
Half-filled Landau levels admit the theoretically powerful fermion-vortex duality but longstanding puzzles remain in their experimental realization as $ν_T=1$ quantum Hall bilayers, further complicated by Zheng et al's recent numerical discovery of an unknown phase at intermediate layer spacing. Here we propose that half-filled quantum Hall bilayers ($ν_T=1$) at intermediate values of the interlayer distance $d/\ell_B$ enter a phase with \textit{paired exciton condensation}. This phase shows signatures analogous to the condensate of interlayer excitons (electrons bound to opposite-layer holes)…
The natures of the ground state in a $ν_{\rm T}=1$ bilayer quantum Hall system at a variety of layer spacing are investigated. At small layer separations the system exhibits spontaneous interlayer phase coherence. It is claimed that the Halperin's (1,1,1) state is not relevant in the incompressible regime near the incompressible to compressible transition point in which the Josephson-like effect was observed. The two-particle correlation function shows the deflated correlation hole at this regime. An effective model that can give a good approximation to the ground state is proposed. A connecti…
We consider the optical properties of the half-filled AB-stacked bilayer graphene with the excitonic pairing and condensation between the layers. Both intra and interlayer local Coulomb interaction effects have been taken into account and the role of the exact Fermi energy has been discussed in details. We have calculated the absorption coefficient, refractive index, dielectric response functions and the electron energy loss spectrum for different interlayer Coulomb interaction regimes and for different temperatures. Considering the full four-band model for the interacting AB bilayer graphene,…
I study the possible phase transitions when two layers at filling factor $ν_t=1$ are gradually separated. In the bosonic case the system should undergo a pairing transition from a Fermi liquid to an incompressible state. In the Fermionic case, the state evolves from an incompressible $(1,1,1)$ state to a Fermi liquid. I speculate that there is an intermediate phase involving charge two quasiparticles.
We construct a class of composite fermion states for bilayer electron systems in a strong transverse magnetic field, and determine quantitatively the phase diagram as a function of the layer separation, layer thickness, and electron density. We find, in general, that there are several transitions, and that the incompressible phases are separated by compressible ones. The paired states of composite fermions, described by Pfaffian wave functions, are also considered.
Although much progress has been made on the physics of magic angle twisted bilayer graphene at integer fillings, little attention has been given to fractional fillings. Here we show that the three-peak structure of Wannier orbitals, dictated by the symmetry and topology of flat bands, facilitates the emergence of a novel state at commensurate fractional filling of $ν= n \pm 1/3$. We dub this state a "fractional correlated insulator". Specifically for the filling of $\pm 1/3$ electrons per moiré unit cell, we show that short-range interactions alone imply an approximate extensive entropy due to…
Intrinsic Hall conductivity, emerging when chiral symmetry is broken, is at the heart of future low energy consumption devices because it can generate non-dissipative charge neutral current. A symmetry breaking state is also induced by electronic correlation even for the centro-symmetric crystalline materials. However, generation of non-dissipative charge neutral current by intrinsic Hall conductivity induced by such spontaneous symmetry breaking is experimentally elusive. Here we report intrinsic Hall conductivity and generation of a non-dissipative charge neutral current in a spontaneous ant…
We report on the properties of a system of interacting electrons in a narrow channel in the quantum Hall effect regime. It is shown that an increase in the strength of the Coulomb interaction causes abrupt changes in the width of the charge-density profile of translationally invariant states. We derive a phase diagram which includes many of the stable odd-denominator states as well as a novel fractional quantum Hall state at lowest half-filled Landau level. The collective mode evaluated at the half-filled case is strikingly similar to that for an odd-denominator fractional quantum Hall state.
Tunneling spectroscopy reveals evidence for interlayer electron-hole correlations in quantum Hall bilayer two-dimensional electron systems at layer separations near, but above, the transition to the incompressible exciton condensate at total Landau level filling $ν_T=1$. These correlations are manifested by a non-linear suppression of the Coulomb pseudogap which inhibits low energy interlayer tunneling in weakly-coupled bilayers. The pseudogap suppression is strongest at $ν_T=1$ and grows rapidly as the critical layer separation for exciton condensation is approached from above.
Two-component fractional quantum Hall systems are providing a major motivation for a large section of the physics community. Here we study two-component fractional quantum Hall systems in the spin-polarized half-filled lowest Landau level (filling factor 1/2) and second Landau level (filling factor 5/2) with exact diagonalization utilizing both the spherical and torus geometries. The two distinct two-component systems we consider are the true bilayer and effective bilayers (wide-quantum-well). In each model (bilayer and wide-quantum-well) we completely take into account inter-layer tunneling a…
We present a quantitative study of most prominent incompressible quantum Hall states in the partially filled first excited Landau level (LL1) which have been recently studied experimentally by Choi et al. The pseudopotential describing the electron - electron interaction in LL1 is harmonic at short range. It produces a series of incompressible states which is different from its LL0 counterpart. The numerical data indicate that the most prominent states $ν={5/2}$, 7/3, and 8/3 are not produced by Laughlin correlated electrons, but result from a tendency of electrons to form pairs or larger clus…
The interplay between strong electron-electron interactions and band topology can lead to novel electronic states that spontaneously break symmetries. The discovery of flat bands in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) with nontrivial topology has provided a unique platform in which to search for new symmetry-broken phases. Recent scanning tunneling microscopy and transport experiments have revealed a sequence of topological insulating phases in MATBG with Chern numbers $C=\pm 3, \, \pm 2, \, \pm 1$ near moiré band filling factors $ν= \pm 1, \, \pm 2, \, \pm 3$, corresponding to a simp…
We have investigated the tunneling properties of an electron double quantum well system where the lowest Landau level of each quantum well is half filled. This system is expected to be a Bose condensate of excitons. Our four-terminal dc measurements reveal a nearly vanishing interlayer voltage and the existence of critical tunneling currents which depend on the strength of the condensate state.
The pair distribution function and the static structure factor are computed for composite fermions. Clear and robust evidence for a $2k_F$ structure is seen in a range of filling factors in the vicinity of the half-filled Landau level. Surprisingly, it is found that filled Landau levels of composite fermions, i.e. incompressible FQHE states, bear a stronger resemblance to a Fermi sea than do filled Landau levels of electrons.
In this work we implement the self-consistent Thomas-Fermi approach and a local conductivity model to an electron-electron bilayer system. The presence of an incompressible strip, originating from screening calculations at the top (or bottom) layer is considered as a source of an external potential fluctuation to the bottom (or top) layer. This essentially yields modifications to both screening properties and the magneto-transport quantities. The effect of the temperature, inter-layer distance and density mismatch on the density and the potential fluctuations are investigated. It is observed t…
The nature of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states is determined by the interplay between the Coulomb interaction and the symmetries of the system. The unique combination of spin, valley, and orbital degeneracies in bilayer graphene is predicted to produce novel and tunable FQH ground states. Here we present local electronic compressibility measurements of the FQH effect in the lowest Landau level of bilayer graphene. We observe incompressible FQH states at filling factors v = 2p + 2/3 with hints of additional states appearing at v = 2p + 3/5, where p = -2,-1, 0, and 1. This sequence of states…
Recent experiments on quantum Hall bilayers near total filling factor 1 have demonstrated that they support an ``imperfect'' two-dimensional superfluidity, in which there is nearly dissipationless transport at non-vanishing temperature observed both in counterflow resistance and interlayer tunneling. We argue that this behavior may be understood in terms of a {\it coherence network} induced in the bilayer by disorder, in which an incompressible, coherent state exists in narrow regions separating puddles of dense vortex-antivortex pairs. A renormalization group analysis shows that it is appropr…
Nonabelian anyons offer the prospect of storing quantum information in a topological qubit protected from decoherence, with the degree of protection determined by the energy gap separating the topological vacuum from its low lying excitations. Originally proposed to occur in quantum wells in high magnetic fields, experimental systems thought to harbor nonabelian anyons range from p-wave superfluids to superconducting systems with strong spin orbit coupling. However, all of these systems are characterized by small energy gaps, and despite several decades of experimental work, definitive evidenc…
Bilayer graphene has a unique electronic structure influenced by a complex interplay between various degrees of freedom. We probe its chemical potential using double bilayer graphene heterostructures, separated by a hexagonal boron nitride dielectric. The chemical potential has a non-linear carrier density dependence, and bears signatures of electron-electron interactions. The data allow a direct measurement of the electric field-induced bandgap at zero magnetic field, the orbital Landau level (LLs) energies, and the broken symmetry quantum Hall state gaps at high magnetic fields. We observe s…
We use a quasi-Corbino sample geometry with independent contacts to different edge states in the quantum Hall effect regime to investigate the edge energy spectrum of a bilayer electron system at total filling factor $ν=2$. By analyzing non-linear $I-V$ curves in normal and tilted magnetic fields we conclude that the edge energy spectrum is in a close connection with the bulk one. At the bulk phase transition spin-singlet - canted antiferromagnetic phase $I-V$ curve becomes to be linear, indicating the disappearance or strong narrowing of the $ν=1$ incompressible strip at the edge of the sampl…
We investigate theoretically the fractional quantum Hall effect at half-filling in the lowest Landau level observed in asymmetric wide quantum wells. The asymmetry can be achieved by a potential bias applied between the two sides of the well. Within exact-diagonalization calculations in the spherical geometry, we find that the incompressible state is described in terms of a two-component wave function. Its overlap with the ground state can be optimized with the help of a rotation in the space of the pseudospin, which mimics the lowest two electronic subbands.
We develop a non-perturbative bosonization approach for bilayer quantum Hall systems at ν_T = 1, which allows us to systematically study the existence of an exciton condensate in these systems. An effective boson model is derived and the excitation spectrum is calculated both in the Bogoliubov and in the Popov approximations. In the latter case, we show that the ground state of the system is an exciton condensate only when the distance between the layers is very small compared to the magnetic length, indicating that the system possibly undergoes another phase transition before the incompressib…
We study the collective modes of the quantum Hall states in undoped bilayer graphene in a strong perpendicular magnetic and electric field. Both for the well-known ferromagnetic state that is relevant for small electric field $E_\perp$ and the analogous valley/layer polarized one suitable for large $E_\perp$, the low energy physics is dominated by magnetoexcitons with zero angular momentum that are even combinations of excitons that conserve Landau orbitals. We identify a long wave length instability in both states, and argue that there is an intermediate range of the electric field $E^{(1)}_\…
We study the fractional quantum Hall effect in the central Landau level of bilayer graphene. By tuning the external applied magnetic field and the electric bias between the two layers one can access a regime where there is a degeneracy between Landau levels with orbital characters corresponding to N=0 and N=1 Galilean Landau levels. While the Laughlin state is generically the ground state for filling $ν=1/3$ we find that it can be destroyed and replaced by a Wigner crystal at the same filling factor by tuning the bias and applied field. This competition does not take place at $ν=2/3$ where the…
In the magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MA-TBG), strong electron-electron (e-e) correlations caused by the band-flattening lead to many exotic quantum phases such as superconductivity, correlated insulator, ferromagnetism, and quantum anomalous Hall effects, when its low-energy van Hove singularities (VHSs) are partially filled. Here our high-resolution scanning tunneling microscope and spectroscopy measurements demonstrate that the e-e correlation in a non-magic-angle TBG with a twist angle θ = 1.49 still plays an important role in determining its electronic properties. Our most interest…
Here we show that the Pfaffian state proposed for the $\frac52$ fractional quantum Hall states in conventional two-dimensional electron systems can be readily realized in a bilayer graphene at one of the Landau levels. The properties and stability of the Pfaffian state at this special Landau level strongly depend on the magnetic field strength. The graphene system shows a transition from the incompressible to a compressible state with increasing magnetic field. At a finite magnetic field of ~10 Tesla, the Pfaffian state in bilayer graphene becomes more stable than its counterpart in convention…
We consider the signatures of the Integer Quantum Hall Effect in a degenerate gas of electrically neutral atomic fermions. An effective magnetic field is achieved by applying two incident light beams with a high orbital angular momentum. We show how states corresponding to completely filled Landau levels are obtained and discuss various possibilities to measure the incompressible nature of the trapped two-dimensional gas
We report on our studies of interacting electrons in bilayer graphene in a magnetic field. We demonstrate that the long range Coulomb interactions between electrons in this material are highly important. We show that in the unbiased bilayer (where both layers are at the same electrostatic potential), the interactions can cause mixing of Landau levels in moderate magnetic fields. For the biased bilayer (when the two layers are at different potentials), we demonstrate that the interactions are responsible for a change in the total spin of the ground state for half-filled Landau levels in the val…
We consider the zero-filled quantum-Hall ferromagnetic state of bilayer graphene subject to a kink-like perpendicular electric field, which generates domain walls in the electronic state and low-energy collective modes confined to move along them. In particular, it is shown that two pairs of collective helical modes are formed at opposite sides of the kink, each pair consisting of modes with identical helicities. We derive an effective field-theoretical model of these modes in terms of two weakly coupled anisotropic quantum spin-ladders, with parameters tunable through control of the electric …
Utilizing the realistic continuum description of twisted bilayer MoTe2 and many-body exact diagonalization calculation, we establish that the second moiré band of twisted bilayer MoTe2, at a small twist angle of approximately 2°, serves as an optimal platform for achieving the long-sought non-Abelian fractional quantum anomalous Hall states without the need for external magnetic fields. Across a wide parameter range, our exact diagonalization calculations reveal that the half-filled second moiré band demonstrates the ground state degeneracy and spectral flows, which are consistent with the pfa…
We investigate numerically different phases that can occur at half filling in the lowest and the first excited Landau levels in wide-well twodimensional electron systems exposed to a perpendicular magnetic field. Within a twocomponent model that takes into account only the two lowest electronic subbands of the quantum well, we derive a phase diagram that compares favorably with an experimental one by Shabani et al. [Phys. Rev. B 88, 245413 (2013)]. In addition to the compressible composite-fermion Fermi liquid in narrow wells with a substantial subband gap and the incompressible twocomponent (…
We analyze the transport properties of bilayer quantum Hall systems at total filling factor $ν=1$ in drag geometries as a function of interlayer bias, in the limit where the disorder is sufficiently strong to unbind meron-antimeron pairs, the charged topological defects of the system. We compute the typical energy barrier for these objects to cross incompressible regions within the disordered system using a Hartree-Fock approach, and show how this leads to multiple activation energies when the system is biased. We then demonstrate using a bosonic Chern-Simons theory that in drag geometries, cu…
Using charge accumulation imaging, we measure the charge flow across an incompressible strip and follow its evolution with magnetic field. The strip runs parallel to the edge of a gate deposited on the sample and forms at positions where an exact number of integer Landau levels is filled. An RC model of charging fits the data well and enables us to determine the longitudinal resistance of the strip. Surprisingly, we find that the strip becomes more resistive as its width decreases.
We report on theoretical and experimental investigations of a novel hysteresis effect that has been observed on the magnetoresistance of quantum-Hall bilayer systems. Extending to these system a recent approach, based on the Thomas-Fermi-Poisson nonlinear screening theory and a local conductivity model, we are able to explain the hysteresis as being due to screening effects such as the formation of ``incompressible strips'', which hinder the electron density in a layer within the quantum Hall regime to reach its equilibrium distribution.
We find that a bilayer of semiconductors emits a new Goldstone quasiparticle when Landau levels in the layers are half filled. The emission of the new quasiparticle is associated with the divergence in the energy of the system characteristic of a phase transition. There is a Bose condensation of the pairs of quasiparticles in which one electron has spin up and the other down but the orbital magnetic quantum number is very large so that the spin singlet is very different from the Cooper pairs.
Bilayer quantum Hall systems at ν=1 support an excitonic ground state. In addition to the usual charged quasiparticles, this system possesses a condensate degree of freedom: exciton transport. Detection of this neutral transport mode is facilitated by the use of the Corbino multiply-connected geometry in which charge transport is suppressed. We here summarize our recent experiments on Corbino devices which directly demonstrate exciton transport across the bulk of the incompressible ν=1 quantum Hall state.
We study continuous quantum phase transitions that can occur in bilayer fractional quantum Hall (FQH) systems as the interlayer tunneling and interlayer repulsion are tuned. We introduce a slave-particle gauge theory description of a series of continuous transitions from the (ppq) Abelian bilayer states to a set of non-Abelian FQH states, which we dub the orbifold FQH states, of which the Z4 parafermion (Read-Rezayi) state is a special case. This provides an example in which Z2 electron fractionalization leads to non-Abelian topological phases. The naive "ideal" wave functions and ideal Hamilt…
Here we report from our theoretical studies that in biased bilayer graphene, one can induce phase transitions from an incompressible state to a compressible state by tuning the bandgap at a given electron density. Likewise, variation of the density with a fixed bandgap results in a transition from the FQHE states at lower Landau levels to compressible states at intermediate Landau levels and finally to FQHE states at higher Landau levels. This intriguing scenario of tunable phase transitions in the fractional quantum Hall states is unique to bilayer graphene and never before existed in convent…
In a magnetic field bilayer graphene supports, at the lowest Landau level, eight characteristic zero-energy levels with an extra twofold degeneracy in Landau orbitals $n=\{0,1\}$. They, under general one-body and many-body interactions, evolve into pseudo-zero-mode (PZM) levels. A close look is made into the detailed structure and characteristics of such PZM levels and cyclotron resonance they host, with full account taken of spin splitting, interlayer bias, weak electron-hole asymmetry and Coulomb interactions. It is pointed out that the PZM levels generally undergo orbital level mixing (in o…
At small layer separations, the ground state of a nu=1 bilayer quantum Hall system exhibits spontaneous interlayer phase coherence and has a charged-excitation gap E_g. The evolution of this state with increasing layer separation d has been a matter of controversy. In this letter we report on small system exact diagonalization calculations which suggest that a single phase transition, likely of first order, separates coherent incompressible (E_g >0) states with strong interlayer correlations from incoherent compressible states with weak interlayer correlations. We find a dependence of the phas…
In bilayer graphene, electrostatic confinement can be realized by a suitable design of top and back gate electrodes. We measure electronic transport through a bilayer graphene quantum dot, which is laterally confined by gapped regions and connected to the leads via p-n junctions. Single electron and hole occupancy is realized and charge carriers $n = 1, 2,\dots 50$ can be filled successively into the quantum system with charging energies exceeding $10 \ \mathrm{meV}$. For the lowest quantum states, we can clearly observe valley and Zeeman splittings with a spin g-factor of $g_{s}\approx 2$. In…
Mean-field theory predicts that bilayer quantum Hall systems at odd integer total filling factors can have stripe ground states in which the top Landau level is occupied alternately by electrons in one of the two layers. We report on an analysis of the properties of these states based on a coupled Luttinger liquid description that is able to account for quantum fluctuations of charge-density and position along each stripe edge. The soft modes associated with the broken symmetries of the stripe state lead to an unusual coupled Luttinger liquid system with strongly enhanced low-temperature heat …
Nature of the fractional quantum Hall state at Landau level filling factor 5/2 remains elusive despite intensive experimental and theoretical work. While the leading theoretical candidates are Moore-Read Pfaffian (Pf) and its particle-hole conjugate anti-Pfaffian (APf), neither received unambiguous experimental support. We show that a state that is intermediate between them, made of alternating stripes of Pf and APf in the bulk, is a viable candidate. Such a state is shown to be incompressible and thus a charge insulator in the bulk, but a heat conductor due to the presence of gapless neutral …
The form of electron correlations in a partially filled degenerate Landau level (LL) is related to the behavior of the anharmonic part of the interaction pseudopotential. Unlike in the lowest LL, the pseudopotential in the first excited LL is harmonic at short range. As a result, the incompressible states in this LL have different correlations, occur at different filling factors nu, and cannot be described by a composite fermion model. The series of Laughlin-correlated states of electron pairs is proposed at nu=2+2/(q_2+2) with integer q_2. It includes Moore-Read nu=5/2 state and the nu=7/3 st…
