We investigate geometric and functional inequalities for the class of log-concave probability sequences. We prove dilation inequalities for log-concave probability measures on the integers. A functional analogue of this geometric inequality is derived, giving large and small deviation inequalities from a median, in terms of a modulus of regularity. Our methods are of independent interest, we find that log-affine sequences are the extreme points of the set of log-concave sequences belonging to a half-space slice of the simplex. We use this result as a tool to derive simple proofs of several convolution type inequalities for log-concave sequences, due to Walkup, Gurvits, and Klartag-Lehec. Further applications of our results are used to produce a discrete version of the Prékopa-Leindler inequality.
We establish concentration inequalities in the class of ultra log-concave distributions. In particular, we show that ultra log-concave distributions satisfy Poisson concentration bounds. As an application, we derive concentration bounds for the intrinsic volumes of a convex body, which generalizes and improves a result of Lotz, McCoy, Nourdin, Peccati, and Tropp (2019).
Extending results of Harg{é} and Hu for the Gaussian measure, we prove inequalities for the covariance Cov$_μ(f, g)$ where $μ$ is a general product probability measure on $\mathbb{R}^d$ and $f,g: \mathbb{R}^d \to \mathbb{R}$ satisfy some convexity or log-concavity assumptions, with possibly some symmetries.
We investigate the role of convexity in Rényi entropy power inequalities. After proving that a general Rényi entropy power inequality in the style of Bobkov-Chistyakov (2015) fails when the Rényi parameter $r\in(0,1)$, we show that random vectors with $s$-concave densities do satisfy such a Rényi entropy power inequality. Along the way, we establish the convergence in the Central Limit Theorem for Rényi entropies of order $r\in(0,1)$ for log-concave densities and for compactly supported, spherically symmetric and unimodal densities, complementing a celebrated result of Barron (1986). Additiona…
We review some simple techniques based on monotone mass transport that allow to obtain transport-type inequalities for any log-concave probability measure, and for more general measures as well. We discuss quantitative forms of these inequalities, with application to the Brascamp-Lieb variance inequality.
We prove, using optimal transport tools, weighted Poincar'e inequalities for log-concave random vectors satisfying some centering conditions. We recover by this way similar results by Klartag and Barthe-Cordero-Erausquin for log-concave random vectors with symmetries. In addition, we prove that the variance conjecture is true for increments of log-concave martingales.
Brascamp--Lieb-type, weighted Poincaré-type and related analytic inequalities are studied for multidimensional Cauchy distributions and more general $κ$-concave probability measures (in the hierarchy of convex measures). In analogy with the limiting (infinite-dimensional log-concave) Gaussian model, the weighted inequalities fully describe the measure concentration and large deviation properties of this family of measures. Cheeger-type isoperimetric inequalities are investigated similarly, giving rise to a common weight in the class of concave probability measures under consideration.
We prove a sharp inequality conjectured by Bobkov on the measure of dilations of Borel sets in $\mathbb{R}^n$ by a $s$-concave probability. Our result gives a common generalization of an inequality of Nazarov, Sodin and Volberg and a concentration inequality of Guédon. Applying our inequality to the level sets of functions satisfying a Remez type inequality, we deduce, as it is classical, that these functions enjoy dimension free distribution inequalities and Kahane-Khintchine type inequalities with positive and negative exponent, with respect to an arbitrary $s$-concave probability.
We study the minimax identity for a non-decreasing upper-semicontinuous utility function satisfying mild growth assumption. In contrast to the classical setting, we do not impose the assumption that the utility function is concave. By considering the concave envelope of the utility function we obtain equalities and inequalities between the robust utility functionals of an initial utility function and its concavification. Furthermore, we prove similar equalities and inequalities in the case of implementing an upper bound on the final endowment of the initial model.
Two-sided bounds are explored for concentration functions and Rényi entropies in the class of discrete log-concave probability distributions. They are used to derive certain variants of the entropy power inequalities.
We study functional inequalities (Poincaré, Cheeger, log-Sobolev) for probability measures obtained as perturbations. Several explicit results for general measures as well as log-concave distributions are given. The initial goal of this work was to obtain explicit bounds on the constants in view of statistical applications for instance. These results are then applied to the Langevin Monte-Carlo method used in statistics in order to compute Bayesian estimators.
We show that the modified log-Sobolev constant for a natural Markov chain which converges to an $r$-homogeneous strongly log-concave distribution is at least $1/r$. Applications include a sharp mixing time bound for the bases-exchange walk for matroids, and a concentration bound for Lipschitz functions over these distributions.
We prove that the exponent of the entropy of one dimensional projections of a log-concave random vector defines a 1/5-seminorm. We make two conjectures concerning reverse entropy power inequalities in the log-concave setting and discuss some examples.
We prove an isoperimetric inequality for the uniform measure on a uniformly convex body and for a class of uniformly log-concave measures (that we introduce). These inequalities imply (up to universal constants) the log-Sobolev inequalities proved by Bobkov--Ledoux as well as the isoperimetric inequalities due to Bakry-Ledoux and Bobkov--Zegarlinski. We also recover a concentration inequality for uniformly convex bodies, similar to that proved by Gromov--Milman.
We prove a sharp moment inequality for a log-concave or a log-convex function, on Gaussian random vectors. As an application we take a stability result for the classical logarithmic Sobolev inequality of L. Gross in the case where the function is log-concave.
We show that the uniform distribution minimizes entropy among all one-dimensional symmetric log-concave distributions with fixed variance, as well as various generalizations of this fact to Rényi entropies of orders less than 1 and with moment constraints involving $p$-th absolute moments with $p\leq 2$. As consequences, we give new capacity bounds for additive noise channels with symmetric log-concave noises, as well as for timing channels involving positive signal and noise where the noise has a decreasing log-concave density. In particular, we show that the capacity of an additive noise cha…
In this paper, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for Talagrand's like transportation cost inequalities on the real line. This brings a new wide class of examples of probability measures enjoying a dimension-free concentration of measure property. Another byproduct is the characterization of modified Log-Sobolev inequalities for Log-concave probability measures on R.
We show that the conjecture of Kannan, Lovász, and Simonovits on isoperimetric properties of convex bodies and log-concave measures, is true for log-concave measures of the form $ρ(|x|_B)dx$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $ρ(t,|x|_B) dx$ on $\mathbb{R}^{1+n}$, where $|x|_B$ is the norm associated to any convex body $B$ already satisfying the conjecture. In particular, the conjecture holds for convex bodies of revolution.
In this paper, we use the semi-group method and an adaptation of the $L^2-$method of Hörmander to establish some $Φ-$entropy inequalities and asymmetric covariance estimates for the strictly convex measures in $\mathbb R^n$. These inequalities extends the ones for the strictly log-concave measures to more general setting of convex measures. The $Φ-$entropy inequalities are turned out to be sharp in the special case of Cauchy measures. Finally, we show that the similar inequalities for log-concave measures can be obtained from our results in the limiting case.
We show that a measure on the real line that is the image of a log-concave measure under a polynomial of degree $d$ possesses a density from the Nikol'skii--Besov class of fractional order $1/d$. This result is used to prove an estimate of the total variation distance between such measures in terms of the Fortet--Mourier distance.
We show that for every mean zero log-concave real random variable $X$ one has $\|X\|_p \leq \frac{p}{q} \|X\|_q$ for $p \geq q \geq 1$, going beyond the well-known case of symmetric random variables. We also prove that in the class of arbitrary log-concave real random variables for $p>q > 0$ the quantity $\|X\|_p / \|X\|_q$ is maximized for some shifted exponential distribution. Building upon this we derive the bound $\|X\|_p \leq C_0 \frac{p}{q} \|X\|_q$ for arbitrary log-concave $X$, with best possible absolute constant $C_0=e^{W(1/e)} \approx 1.3211$ in front of $\frac{p}{q}$, where $W$ sta…
We derive two concentration inequalities for linear functions of log-concave distributions: an enhanced version of the classical Brascamp--Lieb concentration inequality, and an inequality quantifying log-concavity of marginals in a manner suitable for obtaining variance and tail probability bounds. These inequalities are applied to the statistical mechanics problem of estimating the fluctuations of random surfaces of the $\nablaφ$ type. The classical Brascamp--Lieb inequality bounds the fluctuations whenever the interaction potential is uniformly convex. We extend these bounds to the case of c…
We introduce a transport-majorization argument that establishes a majorization in the convex order between two densities, based on control of the gradient of a transportation map between them. As applications, we give elementary derivations of some delicate Fourier analytic inequalities, which in turn yield geometric "slicing-inequalities" in both continuous and discrete settings. As a further consequence of our investigation we prove that any strongly log-concave probability density majorizes the Gaussian density and thus the Gaussian density maximizes the Rényi and Tsallis entropies of all o…
This paper deduces exponential matrix concentration from a Poincaré inequality via a short, conceptual argument. Among other examples, this theory applies to matrix-valued functions of a uniformly log-concave random vector. The proof relies on the subadditivity of Poincaré inequalities and a chain rule inequality for the trace of the matrix Dirichlet form. It also uses a symmetrization technique to avoid difficulties associated with a direct extension of the classic scalar argument.
We discuss interplays between log-concave functions and log-concave sequences. We prove a Bernstein-type theorem, which characterizes the Laplace transform of log-concave measures on the half-line in terms of log-concavity of the alternating Taylor coefficients. We establish concavity inequalities for sequences inspired by the Prékopa-Leindler and the Walkup theorems. One of our main tools is a stochastic variational formula for the Poisson average.
We develop in this paper an amelioration of the method given by S. Bobkov and M. Ledoux in GAFA (2000). We prove by Prekopa-Leindler Theorem an optimal modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality adapted for all log-concave measure on $\dR^n$. This inequality implies results proved by Bobkov and Ledoux, the Euclidean Logarithmic Sobolev inequality generalized in the last years and it also implies some convex logarithmic Sobolev inequalities for large entropy.
The paper provides an estimate of the total variation distance between distributions of polynomials defined on a space equipped with a logarithmically concave measure in terms of the $L^2$-distance between these polynomials.
We establish upper bounds for tails of order statistics of isotropic log-concave vectors and apply them to derive a concentration of l_r norms of such vectors.
We study the log-concave measures, their characterization via the Prékopa-Leindler property and also define a subset of it whose elements are called super log-concave measures which have the property of satisfying a logarithmic Sobolev inequality. We give some results about their stability. Certain relations with measure transportation of Monge-Kantorovitch and the Monge-Ampére equation are also indicated with applications.
We formulate and discuss a conjecture concerning lower bounds for norms of log-concave vectors, which generalizes the classical Sudakov minoration principle for Gaussian vectors. We show that the conjecture holds for some special classes of log-concave measures and some weaker forms of it are satisfied in the general case. We also present some applications based on chaining techniques.
We give a self-contained proof of the strongest version of Mason's conjecture, namely that for any matroid the sequence of the number of independent sets of given sizes is ultra log-concave. To do this, we introduce a class of polynomials, called completely log-concave polynomials, whose bivariate restrictions have ultra log-concave coefficients. At the heart of our proof we show that for any matroid, the homogenization of the generating polynomial of its independent sets is completely log-concave.
A concentration property of the functional ${-}\log f(X)$ is demonstrated, when a random vector X has a log-concave density f on $\mathbb{R}^n$. This concentration property implies in particular an extension of the Shannon-McMillan-Breiman strong ergodic theorem to the class of discrete-time stochastic processes with log-concave marginals.
The Brunn-Minkowski and Prékopa-Leindler inequalities admit a variety of proofs that are inspired by convexity. Nevertheless, the former holds for compact sets and the latter for integrable functions so it seems that convexity has no special signficance. On the other hand, it was recently shown that the Brunn-Minkowski inequality, specialized to convex sets, follows from a local stochastic dominance for naturally associated random polytopes. We show that for the subclass of $\log$-concave functions and associated stochastic approximations, a similar stochastic dominance underlies the Prékopa-L…
We show the existence of the strong solutions of the Monge-Ampere equation for the log-concave measures without any regularity assumption. In particular the measures with density of the form $\exp -f$, where $f$ is an $H$-convex function which may take the value $\infty$ on a set of positive measure are included.
Bi-log-concavity of probability measures is a univariate extension of the notion of log-concavity that has been recently proposed in a statistical literature. Among other things, it has the nice property from a modelisation perspective to admit some multimodal distributions, while preserving some nice features of log-concave measures. We compute the isoperimetric constant for a bi-log-concave measure, extending a property available for log-concave measures. This implies that bi-log-concave measures have exponentially decreasing tails. Then we show that the convolution of a bi-log-concave measu…
We study the Restricted Isometry Property of a random matrix $Γ$ with independent isotropic log-concave rows. To this end, we introduce a parameter $Γ_{k,m}$ that controls uniformly the operator norm of sub-matrices with $k$ rows and $m$ columns. This parameter is estimated by means of new tail estimates of order statistics and deviation inequalities for norms of projections of an isotropic log-concave vector.
We show that for $p\geq 1$ and $r\geq 1$ the $p$-th moment of the $l_r$-norm of a log-concave random vector is comparable to the sum of the first moment and the weak $p$-th moment up to a constant proportional to $r$. This extends the previous result of Paouris concerning Euclidean norms.
This note contains sufficient conditions for the probability density function of an arbitrary continuous univariate distribution, supported on $(0,\infty),$ such that the corresponding Mills ratio to be reciprocally convex (concave). To illustrate the applications of the main results, the reciprocal convexity (concavity) of Mills ratio of the gamma distribution is discussed in details.
We discuss situations where perturbing a probability measure on $\mathbb{R}^n$ does not deteriorate its Poincaré constant by much. A particular example is the symmetric exponential measure in $\mathbb{R}^n$, even log-concave perturbations of which have Poincaré constants that grow at most logarithmically with the dimension. This leads to estimates for the Poincaré constants of $(n/2)$-dimensional sections of the unit ball of $\ell_p^n$ for $1 \leq p \leq 2$, which are optimal up to logarithmic factors. We also consider symmetry properties of the eigenspace of the Laplace-type operator associat…
We introduce a notion called entropic independence that is an entropic analog of spectral notions of high-dimensional expansion. Informally, entropic independence of a background distribution $μ$ on $k$-sized subsets of a ground set of elements says that for any (possibly randomly chosen) set $S$, the relative entropy of a single element of $S$ drawn uniformly at random carries at most $O(1/k)$ fraction of the relative entropy of $S$. Entropic independence is the analog of the notion of spectral independence, if one replaces variance by entropy. We use entropic independence to derive tight mix…
An important theme in recent work in asymptotic geometric analysis is that many classical implications between different types of geometric or functional inequalities can be reversed in the presence of convexity assumptions. In this note, we explore the extent to which different notions of distance between probability measures are comparable for log-concave distributions. Our results imply that weak convergence of isotropic log-concave distributions is equivalent to convergence in total variation, and is further equivalent to convergence in relative entropy when the limit measure is Gaussian.
