In this paper, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for Talagrand's like transportation cost inequalities on the real line. This brings a new wide class of examples of probability measures enjoying a dimension-free concentration of measure property. Another byproduct is the characterization of modified Log-Sobolev inequalities for Log-concave probability measures on R.
The purpose of this paper is twofold. Firstly, we prove transportation inequalities ${\bf T_2}(C)$ on the space of continuous paths with respect to the uniform metric for the law of the solution to a class of non-linear monotone stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) driven by the Wiener noise. Furthermore, we also establish the ${\bf T_1}(C)$ property for such SPDEs but with merely locally monotone coefficients, including the stochastic Burgers type equation and stochastic $2$-D Navier-Stokes equation.
This note reviews the studies of the last decades emphasizing a common principle based on entropy, logarithmic Sobolev inequality and hypercontractivity, behind four most celebrated inequalities by M. Talagrand: the convex distance inequality, the $\mathrm {L}^1$-$\mathrm {L}^2$ variance inequality, the quadratic transportation cost inequality, and the inequality on the supremum of empirical processes.
One way to define the concentration of measure phenomenon is via Talagrand inequalities, also called transportation-information inequalities. That is, a comparison of the Wasserstein distance from the given measure to any other absolutely continuous measure with finite relative entropy. Such transportation-information inequalities were recently established for some stochastic differential equations. Here, we develop a similar theory for some stochastic partial differential equations.
In this article we study generalization of the classical Talagrand transport-entropy inequality in which the Wasserstein distance is replaced by the entropic transportation cost. This class of inequalities has been introduced in the recent work [9], in connection with the study of Schrödinger bridges. We provide several equivalent characterizations in terms of reverse hypercontractivity for the heat semigroup, contractivity of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman semigroup and dimension-free concentration of measure. Properties such as tensorization and relations to other functional inequalities are al…
By using a split argument due to [1], the transportation cost inequality is established on the free path space of Markov processes. The general result is applied to stochastic reaction diffusion equations with random initial values.
In this work we consider dimensional improvements of the logarithmic Sobolev, Talagrand and Brascamp-Lieb inequalities. For this we use optimal transport methods and the Borell-Brascamp-Lieb inequality. These refinements can be written as a deficit in the classical inequalities. They have the right scale with respect to the dimension. They lead to sharpened concentration properties as well as refined contraction bounds, convergence to equilibrium and short time behaviour for the laws of solutions to stochastic differential equations.
Motivated by Talagrand's conjecture on regularization properties of the natural semigroup on the Boolean hypercube, and in particular its continuous analogue involving regularization properties of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup acting on in-tegrable functions, we explore deviation inequalities for log-semiconvex functions under Gaussian measure.
In this paper, we prove a Talagrand's T2 transportation cost-information inequality for the law of a stochastic wave equation in spatial dimension d=3 driven by the Gaussian random field, white in time and correlated in space, on the continuous paths space with respect to the uniform topology.
We provide deficit estimates for Nelson's hypercontractivity inequality, the logarithmic Sobolev inequality, and Talagrand's transportation cost inequality under the restriction that the inputs are semi-log-subharmonic, semi-log-convex, or semi-log-concave. In particular, our result on the logarithmic Sobolev inequality complements a recently obtained result by Eldan, Lehec and Shenfeld concerning a deficit estimate for inputs with small covariance. Similarly, our result on Talagrand's transportation cost inequality complements and, for a large class of semi-log-concave inputs, improves a defi…
We prove that reflected Brownian motion with normal reflections in a convex domain satisfies a dimension free Talagrand type transportation cost-information inequality. The result is generalized to other reflected diffusions with suitable drifts and diffusions. We apply this to get such an inequality for interacting Brownian particles with rank-based drift and diffusion coefficients such as the infinite Atlas model. This is an improvement over earlier dimension-dependent results.
The optimal transport problem studies how to transport one measure to another in the most cost-effective way and has wide range of applications from economics to machine learning. In this paper, we introduce and study an information constrained variation of this problem. Our study yields a strengthening and generalization of Talagrand's celebrated transportation cost inequality. Following Marton's approach, we show that the new transportation cost inequality can be used to recover old and new concentration of measure results. Finally, we provide an application of this new inequality to network…
We prove transportation-cost inequalities for the law of SDE solutions driven by general Gaussian processes. Examples include the fractional Brownian motion, but also more general processes like bifractional Brownian motion. In case of multiplicative noise, our main tool is Lyons' rough paths theory. We also give a new proof of Talagrand's transportation-cost inequality on Gaussian Fréchet spaces. We finally show that establishing transportation-cost inequalities implies that there is an easy criterion for proving Gaussian tail estimates for functions defined on that space. This result can be …
It is known that a quadratic transportation-information inequality $\mathrm{W_2I}$ interpolates between the Talagrand's inequality $\mathrm{W_2H}$ and the log-Sobolev inequality (LSI for short). The aim of the present paper is threefold: (1) To prove the equivalence of $\mathrm{W_2I}$ and the Lyapunov condition, which gives a new characterization inspired by Cattiaux-Guillin-Wu [8]. (2) To prove the stability of $\mathrm{W_2I}$ under bounded perturbations, which gives a transference principle in the sense of Holley-Stroock. (3) To prove $\mathrm{W_2H}$ through a restricted $\mathrm{W_2I}$, whi…
We establish transportation cost inequalities, with respect to the uniform and $L_2$-metric, on the path space of continuous functions, for laws of solutions of stochastic differential equations with reflections. We also consider the case of stochastic differential equations involving local times. Harnack inequalities for the associated semigroups are also established.
For stochastic reaction-diffusion equations with Lévy noises and non-Lipschitz reaction terms, we prove that $W_1H$ transportation cost inequalities hold for their invariant probability measures and for their process-level laws on the path space with respect to the $L^1$-metric. The proofs are based on the Galerkin approximations.
We study Talagrand concentration and Poincaré type inequalities for unbounded pure jump Markov processes. In particular we focus on processes with degenerate jumps that depend on the past of the whole system, based on the model introduced by Galves and Löcherbach in \cite{G-L}, in order to describe the activity of a biological neural network. As a result we obtain exponential rates of convergence to equilibrium.
Let X be the solution of the multidimensional stochastic differential equationdX(t) = b(t, X(t)) dt + sigma(t, X(t)) dW(t)\, with X(0)=x where W is a standard Brownian motion. We show that when b is measurable and sigma is in an appropriate Sobolev space, the law of X satisfies a uniform quadratic transportation inequality.
The goal of the article is to improve constants in the infimum convolution inequalities (IC for short) which were introduced by R. Latała and J.O. Wojtaszczyk. We show that the exponential distribution satisfies IC with constant $2$ but not with constant $1$, which implies that linear functions are not extremal in Maurey's property $(τ)$. Using transport of measure we use this result to better constants in the IC inequalities for product symmetric log-concave measures as well as in the Talagrand's two level concentration inequality for the exponential distribution.
Inequalities between transportation costs and Fisher information are known to characterize certain concentration properties of Markov processes around their invariant measures. This note provides a new characterization of the quadratic transportation-information inequality $W_2I$ in terms of a dimension-free concentration property for i.i.d. (conditionally on the initial positions) copies of the underlying Markov process. This parallels Gozlan's characterization of the quadratic transportation-entropy inequality $W_2H$. The proof is based on a new Laplace-type principle for the operator norms …
In this paper, we prove transportation inequalities on the space of continuous paths with respect to the uniform metric, for the law of solution to a stochastic heat equation defined on $[0,T]\times [0,1]^d$. This equation is driven by the Gaussian noise, white in time and colored in space. The proof is based on a new moment inequality under the uniform metric for the stochastic convolution with respect to the time-white and space-colored noise, which is of independent interest.
In this article we derive Talagrand's $T_2$ inequality on the path space w.r.t. the maximum norm for various stochastic processes, including solutions of one-dimensional stochastic differential equations with measurable drifts, backward stochastic differential equations, and the value process of optimal stopping problems. The proofs do not make use of the Girsanov method, but of pathwise arguments. These are used to show that all our processes of interest are Lipschitz transformations of processes which are known to satisfy desired functional inequalities.
In this paper, we established a quadratic transportation cost inequality for solutions of stochastic reaction diffusion equations driven by multiplicative space-time white noise based on a new inequality we proved for the moments (under the uniform norm) of the stochastic convolution with respect to space-time white noise, which is of independent interest. The solutions of such stochastic partial differential equations are typically not semimartingales on the state space.
We develop transportation-entropy inequalities which are saturated for measures such that their log-density with respect to the background measure is an affine function, in the setting of the uniform measure on the discrete hypercube and the exponential measure. In this sense, this extends the well-known result of Talagrand in the Gaussian case. By duality, these transportation-entropy inequalities imply a strong integrability inequality for Bernoulli and exponential processes. As a result, we obtain a dimension-free mean-field approximation of the free energy of a Gibbs measure and a dimensio…
Following Talagrand's concentration results for permutations picked uniformly at random from a symmetric group [Tal95], Luczak and McDiarmid have generalized it to more general groups G of permutations which act suitably 'locally'. Here we extend their results by setting transport-entropy inequalities on these permutations groups. Talagrand and Luczak-Mc-Diarmid concentra- tion properties are consequences of these inequalities. The results are also gen- eralised to a larger class of measures including Ewens distributions of arbitrary parameter $θ$ on the symmetric group. By projection, we deri…
