We derive transport-entropy inequalities for mixed binomial point processes, and for Poisson point processes. We show that when the finite intensity measure satisfies a Talagrand transport inequality, the law of the point process also satisfies a Talagrand type transport inequality. We also show that a Poisson point process (with arbitrary $σ$-finite intensity measure) always satisfies a universal transport-entropy inequality à la Marton. We explore the consequences of these inequalities in terms of concentration of measure and modified logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. In particular, our results allow one to extend a deviation inequality by Reitzner [31], originally proved for Poisson random measures with finite mass.
We present a class of modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality, interpolating between Poincaré and logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, suitable for measures of the type $\exp(-|x|^\al)$ or more complex $\exp(-|x|^\al\log^β(2+|x|))$ ($\al\in]1,2[$ and $\be\in\dR$) which lead to new concentration inequalities. These modified inequalities share common properties with usual logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, as tensorisation or perturbation, and imply as well Poincaré inequality. We also study the link between these new modified logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and transportation inequalities.
We review some simple techniques based on monotone mass transport that allow to obtain transport-type inequalities for any log-concave probability measure, and for more general measures as well. We discuss quantitative forms of these inequalities, with application to the Brascamp-Lieb variance inequality.
We study an optimal weak transport cost related to the notion of convex order between probability measures. On the real line, we show that this weak transport cost is reached for a coupling that does not depend on the underlying cost function. As an application, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for weak transport-entropy inequalities in dimension one. In particular, we obtain a weak transport-entropy form of the convex Poincar{é} inequality in dimension one.
We introduce a transport-majorization argument that establishes a majorization in the convex order between two densities, based on control of the gradient of a transportation map between them. As applications, we give elementary derivations of some delicate Fourier analytic inequalities, which in turn yield geometric "slicing-inequalities" in both continuous and discrete settings. As a further consequence of our investigation we prove that any strongly log-concave probability density majorizes the Gaussian density and thus the Gaussian density maximizes the Rényi and Tsallis entropies of all o…
Following Talagrand's concentration results for permutations picked uniformly at random from a symmetric group [Tal95], Luczak and McDiarmid have generalized it to more general groups G of permutations which act suitably 'locally'. Here we extend their results by setting transport-entropy inequalities on these permutations groups. Talagrand and Luczak-Mc-Diarmid concentra- tion properties are consequences of these inequalities. The results are also gen- eralised to a larger class of measures including Ewens distributions of arbitrary parameter $θ$ on the symmetric group. By projection, we deri…
We prove that for a probability measure on $\mathbb{R}^n$, the Poincaré inequality for convex functions is equivalent to the weak transportation inequality with a quadratic-linear cost. This generalizes recent results by Gozlan et al. and Feldheim et al., concerning probability measures on the real line. The proof relies on modified logarithmic Sobolev inequalities of Bobkov-Ledoux type for convex and concave functions, which are of independent interest. We also present refined concentration inequalities for general (not necessarily Lipschitz) convex functions, complementing recent results by …
We relate transport-entropy inequalities to the study of critical points of functionals defined on the space of probability measures. This approach leads in particular to a new proof of a result by Otto and Villani [43] showing that the logarithmic Sobolev inequality implies Talagrand's transport inequality.
This paper explores the connection between a generalized Riesz electric energy and norms on the set of probability measures defined in terms of duality. We derive functional inequalities linking these two notions, recovering and generalizing existing Coulomb transport inequalities. We then use them to prove concentration of measure around the equilibrium and thermal equilibrium measures. Finally, we leverage these concentration inequalities to obtain Moser-Trudinger-type inequalities, which may also be interpreted as bounds on the Laplace transform of fluctuations.
Decoupling inequalities disentangle complex dependence structures of random objects so that they can be analyzed by means of standard tools from the theory of independent random variables. We study decoupling inequalities for vector-valued homogeneous polynomials evaluated at random variables. We focus on providing geometric conditions ensuring decoupling inequalities with good constants depending only exponentially on the degree of the polynomial. Assuming the Banach space has finite cotype we achieve this for classical decoupling inequalities that compare the polynomials with their associate…
We give an alternative proof for discrete Brunn-Minkowski type inequalities, recently obtained by Halikias, Klartag and the author. This proof also implies somewhat stronger weighted versions of these inequalities. Our approach generalizes ideas of Gozlan, Roberto, Samson and Tetali from the theory of measure transportation and provides new displacement convexity of entropy type inequalities for the lattice point enumerator.
The purpose of this note is to show how simple Optimal Transport arguments, on the real line, can be used in Superconcentration theory. This methodology is efficient to produce sharp non-asymptotic variance bounds for various functionals (maximum, median, $l^p$ norms) of standard Gaussian random vectors in $\R^n$. The flexibility of this approach can also provide exponential deviation inequalities reflecting preceding variance bounds. As a further illustration, usual laws from Extreme theory and Coulomb gases are studied.
In this paper, we prove a Talagrand's T2 transportation cost-information inequality for the law of a stochastic wave equation in spatial dimension d=3 driven by the Gaussian random field, white in time and correlated in space, on the continuous paths space with respect to the uniform topology.
In this work, we connect the problem of bounding the expected generalisation error with transportation-cost inequalities. Exposing the underlying pattern behind both approaches we are able to generalise them and go beyond Kullback-Leibler Divergences/Mutual Information and sub-Gaussian measures. In particular, we are able to provide a result showing the equivalence between two families of inequalities: one involving functionals and one involving measures. This result generalises the one proposed by Bobkov and Götze that connects transportation-cost inequalities with concentration of measure. M…
Inequalities between transportation costs and Fisher information are known to characterize certain concentration properties of Markov processes around their invariant measures. This note provides a new characterization of the quadratic transportation-information inequality $W_2I$ in terms of a dimension-free concentration property for i.i.d. (conditionally on the initial positions) copies of the underlying Markov process. This parallels Gozlan's characterization of the quadratic transportation-entropy inequality $W_2H$. The proof is based on a new Laplace-type principle for the operator norms …
In this work, we deal with an iteration method for approximating a fixed point of a contraction mapping using the Mann's algorithm under functional random errors. We first show its almost complete convergence to the fixed point by mean of an exponential inequality and then we specify the induced rate of convergence. We finally build a confidence set for the fixed point.
In this paper, we established a quadratic transportation cost inequality for solutions of stochastic reaction diffusion equations driven by multiplicative space-time white noise based on a new inequality we proved for the moments (under the uniform norm) of the stochastic convolution with respect to space-time white noise, which is of independent interest. The solutions of such stochastic partial differential equations are typically not semimartingales on the state space.
We study the non-asymptotic behavior of Coulomb gases in dimension two and more. Such gases are modeled by an exchangeable Boltzmann-Gibbs measure with a singular two-body interaction. We obtain concentration of measure inequalities for the empirical distribution of such gases around their equilibrium measure, with respect to bounded Lipschitz and Wasserstein distances. This implies macroscopic as well as mesoscopic convergence in such distances. In particular, we improve the concentration inequalities known for the empirical spectral distribution of Ginibre random matrices. Our approach is re…
We prove that reflected Brownian motion with normal reflections in a convex domain satisfies a dimension free Talagrand type transportation cost-information inequality. The result is generalized to other reflected diffusions with suitable drifts and diffusions. We apply this to get such an inequality for interacting Brownian particles with rank-based drift and diffusion coefficients such as the infinite Atlas model. This is an improvement over earlier dimension-dependent results.
Random matrices have played an important role in many fields including machine learning, quantum information theory and optimization. One of the main research focuses is on the deviation inequalities for eigenvalues of random matrices. Although there are intensive studies on the large-deviation inequalities for random matrices, only a few of works discuss the small-deviation behavior of random matrices. In this paper, we present the small-deviation inequalities for the largest eigenvalues of sums of random matrices. Since the resulting inequalities are independent of the matrix dimension, they…
We derive the tail inequalities between two random variables starting from inequalities between its moment, or more generally between its Lebesgue-Riesz norms, which holds true on certain sets of parameters. We consider some applications into the martingale theory.
We establish deviation inequalities for the maxima of partial sums of a martingale differences sequence, and of a strictly stationary orthomartingale random field. These inequalities can be used to establish complete convergence of normalized maxima of partial sums.
