A two-dimensional simplicial complex is called $d$-{\em regular} if every edge of it is contained in exactly $d$ distinct triangles. It is called $ε$-expanding if its up-down two-dimensional random walk has a normalized maximal eigenvalue which is at most $1-ε$.
In this work, we present a class of bounded degree 2-dimensional expanders, which is the result of a small 2-complex action on a vertex set. The resulted complexes are fully transitive, meaning the automorphism group acts transitively on their faces.
Such two-dimensional expanders are rare! Known constructions of such bounded degree two-dimensional expander families are obtained from deep algebraic reasonings (e.g. coset geometries).
We show that given a small $d$-regular two-dimensional $ε$-expander, there exists an $ε'=ε'(ε)$ and a family of bounded degree two-dimensional simplicial complexes with a number of vertices goes to infinity, such that each complex in the family satisfies the following properties:
* It is $4d$-regular.
* The link of each vertex in the complex is the same regular graph (up to isomorphism).
* It is $ε'$ expanding.
* It is transitive.
The family of expanders that we get is explicit if the one-skeleton of the small complex is a complete multipartite graph, and it is random in the case of (almost) general $d$-regular complex. For the randomized construction, we use results on expanding generators in a product of simple Lie groups. This construction is inspired by ideas that occur in the zig-zag product for graphs. It can be seen as a loose two-dimensional analog of the replacement product.
An infinite family of bounded-degree 'unique-neighbor' expanders was constructed explicitly by Alon and Capalbo (2002). We present an infinite family F of bounded-degree unique-neighbor expanders with the additional property that every graph in the family F is a Cayley graph. This answers a question raised by Tali Kaufman. Using the same methods, we show that the symmetric LDPC codes constructed by Kaufman and Lubotzky (2012) are in fact symmetric under a simply transitive group action on coordinates.
In this paper, we use geometric tools to study the structure of asymptotic expanders and show that a sequence of asymptotic expanders always admits a "uniform exhaustion by expanders". It follows that asymptotic expanders cannot be coarsely embedded into any $L^p$-space, and that asymptotic expanders can be characterised in terms of their uniform Roe algebra. Moreover, we provide uncountably many new counterexamples to the coarse Baum--Connes conjecture. These appear to be the first counterexamples that are not directly constructed by means of spectral gaps. Finally, we show that vertex-transi…
We generalize the zig-zag product construction to produce infinite families of regular graphs of any constant degree. We analyze the second largest eigenvalue of this new zig-zag product to show that the modified zig-zag product of good expanders is again a good expander (yet not Ramanujan).
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a finite graph. For $v\in V$ we denote by $G_v$ the subgraph of $G$ that is induced by $v$'s neighbor set. We say that $G$ is $(a,b)$-regular for $a>b>0$ integers, if $G$ is $a$-regular and $G_v$ is $b$-regular for every $v\in V$. Recent advances in PCP theory call for the construction of infinitely many $(a,b)$-regular expander graphs $G$ that are expanders also locally. Namely, all the graphs $\{G_v|v\in V\}$ should be expanders as well. While random regular graphs are expanders with high probability, they almost surely fail to expand locally. Here we construct two families …
The main purpose of this paper is to construct high-girth regular expander graphs with localized eigenvectors for general degrees, which is inspired by a recent work due to Alon, Ganguly and Srivastava (to appear in Israel J. Math.).
Expander graphs have many interesting applications in communication networks and other areas, and thus these graphs have been extensively studied in theoretic computer sciences and in applied mathematics. In this paper, we use reversible difference sets and generalized difference sets to construct more expander graphs, some of them are Ramanujan graphs. Three classes of elementary constructions of infinite families of Ramanujan graphs are provided. It is proved that for every even integer $k>4$, if $2(k+2)=rs$ for two even numbers $r$ and $s$ with $s\geq 4$ and $2s>r\geq s$, or $r\geq 4$ and $…
We classify all the $2$-arc-transitive strongly regular graphs, and use this classification to study the family of finite $(G,3)$-geodesic-transitive graphs of girth $4$ or $5$ for some group $G$ of automorphisms. For this application we first give a reduction result on the latter family of graphs: let $N$ be a normal subgroup of $G$ which has at least $3$ orbits on vertices. We show that $Γ$ is a cover of its quotient $Γ_N$ modulo the $N$-orbits, and that either $Γ_N$ is $(G/N,3)$-geodesic-transitive of the same girth as $Γ$, or $Γ_N$ is a $(G/N,2)$-arc-transitive strongly regular graph, or $…
This paper presents a characterization of edge-transitive graphs which are four regular and have girth four. This class consists of four infinite families plus four exceptional graphs.
A regular equivalence between two graphs $Γ,Γ'$ is a pair of uniformly proper Lipschitz maps $VΓ\to VΓ'$ and $VΓ'\to VΓ$. Using separation profiles we prove that there are $2^{\aleph_0}$ regular equivalence classes of expander graphs, and of finitely generated groups with a representative which isometrically contains expanders.
In this paper we construct structures from Mathieu group $M_{11}$. We classify transitive $t$-designs with 11, 12 and 22 points admitting a transitive action of Mathieu group $M_{11}$. Thereby we proved the existence of designs with parameters 3-(22,7,18) and found first simple designs with parameters 4-(11,5,6) and 5-(12,6,6). Additionally, we proved the existence of $2$-designs with certain parameters having 55 and 66 points. Furthermore, we classified strongly regular graphs on at most 450 vertices admitting a transitive action of the Mathieu group $M_{11}$.
Distance-regular graphs have many beautiful combinatorial properties. Distance-transitive graphs have very strong symmetries, and they are distance-regular, i.e. distance-transitivity implies distance-regularity. In this paper, we give similar results, i.e. for special $s$ and graphs with other restrictions we show that $s$-distance-transitivity implies distance-regularity.
Given a parity-check matrix $H_m$ of a $q$-ary Hamming code, we consider a partition of the columns into two subsets. Then, we consider the two codes that have these submatrices as parity-check matrices. We say that anyone of these two codes is the supplementary code of the other one. We obtain that if one of these codes is a Hamming code, then the supplementary code is completely regular and completely transitive. If one of the codes is completely regular with covering radius $2$, then the supplementary code is also completely regular with covering radius at most $2$. Moreover, in this case, …
In a recent paper, we showed that every sufficiently large regular digraph G on n vertices whose degree is linear in n and which is a robust outexpander has a decomposition into edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles. The main consequence of this theorem is that every regular tournament on n vertices can be decomposed into (n-1)/2 edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles, whenever n is sufficiently large. This verified a conjecture of Kelly from 1968. In this paper, we derive a number of further consequences of our result on robust outexpanders, the main ones are the following: (i) an undirected analogue of our r…
In 2018 the first, Rukavina and the third author constructed with the aid of a computer the first example of a strongly regular graph $Γ$ with parameters (216, 40, 4, 8) and proved that it is the unique PSU(4,2)-invariant vertex-transitive graph on 216 vertices. In this paper, using the geometry of the Hermitian surface of PG(3, 4), we provide a computer-free proof of the existence of the graph $Γ$. The maximal cliques of $Γ$ are also determined.
In this paper, we consider upper bounds on the size of transitive subtournaments in a digraph. In particular, we give an analogy of Hoffman's bound for the size of cocliques in a regular graph. Furthermore, we partially improve the Hoffman type bound for doubly regular tournaments by using the technique of Greaves and Soicher for strongly regular graphs [4], which gives a new application of block intersection polynomials.
We construct (k+-1)-regular graphs which provide sequences of expanders by adding or substracting appropriate 1-factors from given sequences of k-regular graphs. We compute numerical examples in a few cases for which the given sequences are from the work of Lubotzky, Phillips, and Sarnak (with k-1 the order of a finite field). If k+1 = 7, our construction results in a sequence of 7-regular expanders with all spectral gaps at least about 1.52.
We give an FPTAS and an efficient sampling algorithm for the high-fugacity hard-core model on bounded-degree bipartite expander graphs and the low-temperature ferromagnetic Potts model on bounded-degree expander graphs. The results apply, for example, to random (bipartite) $Δ$-regular graphs, for which no efficient algorithms were known for these problems (with the exception of the Ising model) in the non-uniqueness regime of the infinite $Δ$-regular tree. We also find efficient counting and sampling algorithms for proper $q$-colorings of random $Δ$-regular bipartite graphs when $q$ is suffici…
A graph $X$ is defined inductively to be $(a_0,\dots,a_{n-1})$-regular if $X$ is $a_0$-regular and for every vertex $v$ of $X$, the sphere of radius $1$ around $v$ is an $(a_1,\dots,a_{n-1})$-regular graph. Such a graph $X$ is said to be highly regular (HR) of level $n$ if $a_{n-1}\neq 0$. Chapman, Linial and Peled studied HR-graphs of level 2 and provided several methods to construct families of graphs which are expanders "globally and locally". They ask whether such HR-graphs of level 3 exist. In this paper we show how the theory of Coxeter groups, and abstract regular polytopes and their ge…
In this paper, we study the large-scale structure of dense regular graphs. This involves the notion of robust expansion, a recent concept which has already been used successfully to settle several longstanding problems. Roughly speaking, a graph is robustly expanding if it still expands after the deletion of a small fraction of its vertices and edges. Our main result allows us to harness the useful consequences of robust expansion even if the graph itself is not a robust expander. It states that every dense regular graph can be partitioned into `robust components', each of which is a robust ex…
We present a pair of heuristic algorithms. The first is to generate a random regular graph of fixed size. The second is the introduction of the Metropolis Coupled Simulated Annealer (MCSA) for optimizing spectral gaps in fixed size regular graphs.
A regular cover of a connected graph is called {\em cyclic} or {\em dihedral} if its transformation group is cyclic or dihedral respectively, and {\em arc-transitive} (or {\em symmetric}) if the fibre-preserving automorphism subgroup acts arc-transitively on the regular cover. In this paper, we give a classification of arc-transitive cyclic and dihedral covers of a connected pentavalent symmetric graph of order twice a prime. All those covers are explicitly constructed as Cayley graphs on some groups, and their full automorphism groups are determined.
It is shown that there exists a sequence of 3-regular graphs $\{G_n\}_{n=1}^\infty$ and a Hadamard space $X$ such that $\{G_n\}_{n=1}^\infty$ forms an expander sequence with respect to $X$, yet random regular graphs are not expanders with respect to $X$. This answers a question of \cite{NS11}. $\{G_n\}_{n=1}^\infty$ are also shown to be expanders with respect to random regular graphs, yielding a deterministic sublinear time constant factor approximation algorithm for computing the average squared distance in subsets of a random graph. The proof uses the Euclidean cone over a random graph, an a…
We prove that every regular graph of valency at least four whose automorphism group contains a nilpotent subgroup acting transitively on the vertex set admits a nowhere-zero 3-flow.
A pseudo-hyperoval of a projective space $\PG(3n-1,q)$, $q$ even, is a set of $q^n+2$ subspaces of dimension $n-1$ such that any three span the whole space. We prove that a pseudo-hyperoval with an irreducible transitive stabiliser is elementary. We then deduce from this result a classification of the thick generalised quadrangles $\mathcal{Q}$ that admit a point-primitive, line-transitive automorphism group with a point-regular abelian normal subgroup. Specifically, we show that $\mathcal{Q}$ is flag-transitive and isomorphic to $T_2^*(\mathcal{H})$, where $\mathcal{H}$ is either the regular …
Given a finite simple graph $Γ$ on $n$ vertices its complementary prism is the graph $Γ\barΓ$ that is obtained from $Γ$ and its complement $\barΓ$ by adding a perfect matching, where each its edge connects two copies of the same vertex in $Γ$ and $\barΓ$. It generalizes the Petersen graph, which is obtained if $Γ$ is the pentagon. The automorphism group of $Γ\barΓ$ is described for arbitrary graph $Γ$. In particular, it is shown that the ratio between the cardinalities of the automorphism groups of $Γ\barΓ$ and $Γ$ can attain only values $1$, $2$, $4$, and $12$. It is shown that the Cheeger nu…
We consider supercritical bond percolation on a family of high-girth $d$-regular expanders. Alon, Benjamini and Stacey (2004) established that its critical probability for the appearance of a linear-sized ("giant'') component is $p_c=1/(d-1)$. Our main result recovers the sharp asymptotics of the size and degree distribution of the vertices in the giant and its 2-core at any $p>p_c$. It was further shown in [ABS04] that the second largest component, at any $0<p<1$, has size at most $n^ω$ for some $ω<1$. We show that, unlike the situation in the classical Erdős-Rényi random graph, the second la…
In this note, we construct bipartite 2-walk-regular graphs with exactly 6 distinct eigenvalues as incidence graphs of group-divisible designs with the dual property. For many of them, we show that they are 2-arc-transitive dihedrants. We note that many of these graphs are not described in Du et al. [7, Theorem1.2], in which they classify the connected 2-arc transitive dihedrants.
In this paper, we examine the structure of vertex- and edge-transitive strongly regular graphs, using normal quotient reduction. We show that the irreducible graphs in this family have quasiprimitive automorphism groups, and prove (using the Classification of Finite Simple Groups) that no graph in this family has a holomorphic simple automorphism group. We also find some constraints on the parameters of the graphs in this family that reduce to complete graphs.
A long-standing conjecture of Kelly states that every regular tournament on n vertices can be decomposed into (n-1)/2 edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles. We prove this conjecture for large n. In fact, we prove a far more general result, based on our recent concept of robust expansion and a new method for decomposing graphs. We show that every sufficiently large regular digraph G on n vertices whose degree is linear in n and which is a robust outexpander has a decomposition into edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles. This enables us to obtain numerous further results, e.g. as a special case we confirm a con…
It has long been known that random regular graphs are with high probability good expanders. This was first established in the 1980s by Bollobás by directly calculating the probability that a set of vertices has small expansion and then applying the union bound. In this paper we improve on this analysis by relying on a simple high-level observation: if a graph contains a set of vertices with small expansion then it must also contain such a set of vertices that is locally optimal, that is, a set whose expansion cannot be made smaller by exchanging a vertex from the set with one from the set's co…
We consider the problem of computing identifying codes of graphs and its fractional relaxation. The ratio between the size of optimal integer and fractional solutions is between 1 and 2 ln(|V|)+1 where V is the set of vertices of the graph. We focus on vertex-transitive graphs for which we can compute the exact fractional solution. There are known examples of vertex-transitive graphs that reach both bounds. We exhibit infinite families of vertex-transitive graphs with integer and fractional identifying codes of order |V|^a with a in {1/4,1/3,2/5}. These families are generalized quadrangles (st…
A theorem of A. Schrijver asserts that a $d$-regular bipartite graph on $2n$ vertices has at least $$\left(\frac{(d-1)^{d-1}}{d^{d-2}}\right)^n$$ perfect matchings. L. Gurvits gave an extension of Schrijver's theorem for matchings of density $p$. In this paper we give a stronger version of Gurvits's theorem in the case of vertex-transitive bipartite graphs. This stronger version in particular implies that for every positive integer $k$, there exists a positive constant $c(k)$ such that if a $d$-regular vertex-transitive bipartite graph on $2n$ vertices contains a cycle of length at most $k$, t…
In his doctoral thesis, Snover proved that any binary $(m,256,δ)$ code is equivalent to the Nordstrom-Robinson code or the punctured Nordstrom-Robinson code for $(m,δ)=(16,6)$ or $(15,5)$ respectively. We prove that these codes are also characterised as \emph{completely regular} binary codes with $(m,δ)=(16,6)$ or $(15,5)$, and moreover, that they are \emph{completely transitive}. Also, it is known that completely transitive codes are necessarily completely regular, but whether the converse holds has up to now been an open question. We answer this by proving that certain completely regular cod…
Building on earlier results for regular maps and for orientably regular chiral maps, we classify the non-abelian finite simple groups arising as automorphism groups of maps in each of the 14 Graver-Watkins classes of edge-transitive maps.
In this paper, for any prime $p$, we propose the notion of a $p$-transitive association scheme. This notion aims to generalize the fact that the regular module of a group algebra of a finite group has a unique trivial submodule to the case of the regular modules of modular adjacency algebras. We completely determine the $p$-transitive quasi-thin association schemes and the $p$-transitive association schemes with thin thin residue by their structure theory properties.
Regular incidence complexes are combinatorial incidence structures generalizing regular convex polytopes, regular complex polytopes, various types of incidence geometries, and many other highly symmetric objects. The special case of abstract regular polytopes has been well-studied. The paper describes the combinatorial structure of a regular incidence complex in terms of a system of distinguished generating subgroups of its automorphism group or a flag-transitive subgroup. Then the groups admitting a flag-transitive action on an incidence complex are characterized as generalized string C-group…
In this note we give two results. First, if a latin bitrade $(T_1, T_2)$ is primary, thin, separated, and the autotopism group of $T_1$ acts regularly on $T_1$, then $(T_1, T_2)$ may be derived from a group-based construction. Second, if a latin bitrade $(T_1, T_2)$ has genus 0 then the disjoint mate $T_2$ is unique and the autotopism group of $T_1$ is equal to the autotopism group of $T_2$.
