The antiferromagnetic Ising model samples subsets of vertices of a graph with weight decaying exponentially in the number of edges induced. We study the problem of sampling from this model on the class of bipartite, regular graphs with good vertex expansion. We show that a natural sampler, namely the Glauber dynamics, mixes exponentially slowly in a wide range of parameters. On the other hand, we give an efficient alternative algorithm for sampling from the Ising model and an FPTAS for its partition function, using polymer models and the cluster expansion method.
A graph with vertex set V and edge set E is called a (d,c)-expander if the maximum degree of a vertex is d and, for every subset W of V that has cardinality at most |V|/2, the number of edges between vertices in W and vertices outside of W is at least c|V|. This note considers a related combinatorial question: "For which integers d and functions f_d does there exist, for every large enough v, a bipartite d-regular multigraph on 2v nodes with node sets V and W having the following property: For every U that is a subset of either V or W, the cardinality of the set of neighbours of U is at least …
We construct an infinite family of bounded-degree bipartite unique-neighbour expander graphs with arbitrarily unbalanced sides. Although weaker than the lossless expanders constructed by Capalbo et al., our construction is simpler and may be closer to be implementable in practice due to the smaller constants. We construct these graphs by composing bipartite Ramanujan graphs with a fixed-size gadget in a way that generalizes the construction of unique neighbour expanders by Alon and Capalbo. For the analysis of our construction we prove a strong upper bound on average degrees in small induced s…
An expander code is a binary linear code whose parity-check matrix is the bi-adjacency matrix of a bipartite expander graph. We provide a new formula for the minimum distance of such codes. We also provide a new proof of the result that $2(1-\varepsilon) γn$ is a lower bound of the minimum distance of the expander code given by a $(m,n,d,γ,1-\varepsilon)$ expander bipartite graph.
We give an FPTAS and an efficient sampling algorithm for the high-fugacity hard-core model on bounded-degree bipartite expander graphs and the low-temperature ferromagnetic Potts model on bounded-degree expander graphs. The results apply, for example, to random (bipartite) $Δ$-regular graphs, for which no efficient algorithms were known for these problems (with the exception of the Ising model) in the non-uniqueness regime of the infinite $Δ$-regular tree. We also find efficient counting and sampling algorithms for proper $q$-colorings of random $Δ$-regular bipartite graphs when $q$ is suffici…
Bourgain and Yehudayoff recently constructed $O(1)$-monotone bipartite expanders. By combining this result with a generalisation of the unraveling method of Kannan, we construct 3-monotone bipartite expanders, which is best possible. We then show that the same graphs admit 3-page book embeddings, 2-queue layouts, 4-track layouts, and have simple thickness 2. All these results are best possible.
We discuss how graph expansion is related to the behavior of $L^{p}$-functions on the covering tree. We show that the non-trivial eigenvalues of the adjacency operator on aa $(q+1)$-regular graph are bounded by $q^{1/p}+q^{(p-1)/p}$ - the $L^{p}$-norm of the operator on the covering tree - if and only if properly averaged lifts of functions from the graph to the tree lie in $L^{p+ε}$ for every $ε>0$. We generalize the result to operators on edges and to bipartite graphs. The work is based on a combinatorial interpretation of representation-theoretic ideas.
Expander graphs are widely used in communication problems and construction of error correcting codes. In such graphs, information gets through very quickly. Typically, it is not true for social or biological networks, though we may find a partition of the vertices such that the induced subgraphs on them and the bipartite subgraphs between any pair of them exhibit regular behavior of information flow within or between the subsets. Implications between spectral and regularity properties are discussed.
By implementing algorithmic versions of Sapozhenko's graph container methods, we give new algorithms for approximating the number of independent sets in bipartite graphs. Our first algorithm applies to $d$-regular, bipartite graphs satisfying a weak expansion condition: when $d$ is constant, and the graph is a bipartite $Ω( \log^2 d/d)$-expander, we obtain an FPTAS for the number of independent sets. Previously such a result for $d>5$ was known only for graphs satisfying the much stronger expansion conditions of random bipartite graphs. The algorithm also applies to weighted independent sets: …
We study the classical expander codes, introduced by Sipser and Spielman \cite{SS96}. Given any constants $0< α, \varepsilon < 1/2$, and an arbitrary bipartite graph with $N$ vertices on the left, $M < N$ vertices on the right, and left degree $D$ such that any left subset $S$ of size at most $αN$ has at least $(1-\varepsilon)|S|D$ neighbors, we show that the corresponding linear code given by parity checks on the right has distance at least roughly $\frac{αN}{2 \varepsilon }$. This is strictly better than the best known previous result of $2(1-\varepsilon ) αN$ \cite{Sudan2000note, Viderman13…
We show that the ratio of the number of near perfect matchings to the number of perfect matchings in $d$-regular strong expander (non-bipartite) graphs, with $2n$ vertices, is a polynomial in $n$, thus the Jerrum and Sinclair Markov chain [JS89] mixes in polynomial time and generates an (almost) uniformly random perfect matching. Furthermore, we prove that such graphs have at least $Ω(d)^n$ any perfect matchings, thus proving the Lovasz-Plummer conjecture [LP86] for this family of graphs.
The expansion of a graph is typically associated with its spectral properties - testing whether a graph is an expander is usually done using Cheeger's inequality. One can also use multiple eigenvalues in a higher-order Cheeger's inequality to test a deeper set of properties on the graph. However Cheeger's inquality, and the higher-order Cheeger's inequality, can be imprecise tools. Recently Lee, Gharan, and Trevisan constructed the Noisy Hypercube to prove the sharpness of the gap between spectral expansion and edge expansion in the higher-order Cheeger's inequality. We are concerned with the …

In this paper, we study the large-scale structure of dense regular graphs. This involves the notion of robust expansion, a recent concept which has already been used successfully to settle several longstanding problems. Roughly speaking, a graph is robustly expanding if it still expands after the deletion of a small fraction of its vertices and edges. Our main result allows us to harness the useful consequences of robust expansion even if the graph itself is not a robust expander. It states that every dense regular graph can be partitioned into `robust components', each of which is a robust ex…
We explore the limiting empirical eigenvalue distributions arising from matrices of the form \[A_{n+1} = \begin{bmatrix} A_n & I\\ I & A_n \end{bmatrix} , \]where $A_0$ is the adjacency matrix of a $k$-regular graph. We find that for bipartite graphs, the distributions are centered symmetric binomial distributions, and for non-bipartite graphs, the distributions are asymmetric. This research grew out of our work on neural networks in $k$-regular graphs. Our original question was whether or not the graph cylinder construction would produce an expander graph that is a suitable candidate for the …
Let $G$ be a finite group and $S$ be a symmetric generating set of $G$ with $|S| = d$. We show that if the undirected Cayley sum graph $C_Σ(G,S)$ is an expander graph and is non-bipartite, then the spectrum of its normalised adjacency operator is bounded away from $-1$. We also establish an explicit lower bound for the spectrum of these graphs, namely, the non-trivial eigenvalues of the normalised adjacency operator lies in the interval $\left(-1+\frac{h(G)^{4}}η, 1-\frac{h(G)^{2}}{2d^{2}}\right]$, where $h(G)$ denotes the (vertex) Cheeger constant of the $d$-regular graph $C_Σ(G,S)$ and $η= 2…
The spectrum of a graph is closely related to many graph parameters. In particular, the spectral gap of a regular graph which is the difference between its valency and second eigenvalue, is widely seen an algebraic measure of connectivity and plays a key role in the theory of expander graphs. In this paper, we extend previous work done for graphs and bipartite graphs and present a linear programming method for obtaining an upper bound on the order of a regular uniform hypergraph with prescribed distinct eigenvalues. Furthermore, we obtain a general upper bound on the order of a regular uniform…
