In this paper, we consider the heat equation with strongly singular potentials and prove that it has a "very weak solution". Moreover, we show the uniqueness and consistency results in some appropriate sense. The cases of positive and negative potentials are studied. Numerical simulations are done: one suggests so-called "laser heating and cooling" effects depending on a sign of the potential. The latter is justified by physical observations.
Let (M,g) be a compact Riemannian manifold without boundary. Let D be a compact subdomain of M with smooth boundary. We examine the heat content asymptotics for the heat flow from D into M where both the initial temperature and the specific heat are permitted to have controlled singularities on the boundary of D. The operator driving the heat process is assumed to be an operator of Laplace type
We study the asymptotic behavior of the heat content on a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary and with singular specific heat and singular initial temperature distributions imposing Robin boundary conditions. Assuming the existence of a complete asymptotic series we determine the first three terms in that series. In addition to the general setting, the interval is studied in detail as are recursion relations among the coefficients and the relationship between the Dirichlet and Robin settings.
The aim of this article is to study the noncontrollability of the heat equation with double singular potential at an interior point and on the boundary of the domain.

We give two different simple proofs for the removable singularities of the heat equation in $(Ω\setminus\{x_0\})\times (0,T)$ with $n\ge 3$. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for removable singularities of the heat equation in $(Ω\setminus\{x_0\})\times (0,T)$ for the case $n=2$.
We consider solutions of the linear heat equation with time-dependent singularities. It is shown that if a singularity is weaker than the order of the fundamental solution of the Laplace equation, then it is removable. We also consider the removability of higher dimensional singular sets. An example of a non-removable singularity is given, which implies the optimality of the condition for removability.
We study the weighted heat trace asymptotics of an operator of Laplace type with mixed boundary conditions where the weight function exhibits radial blowup. We give formulas for the first three boundary terms in the expansion in terms of geometrical data.
In this paper we consider the heat equation with a strongly singular potential and show that it has a very weak solution. Our analysis is devoted to general hypoelliptic operators and is developed in the setting of graded Lie groups. The current work continues and extends a previous work , where the classical heat equation on $\mathbb R^n$ was considered.
We study the existence of global-in-time solutions for a nonlinear heat equation with nonlocal diffusion, power nonlinearity and suitably small data (either compared pointwisely to the singular solution or in the norm of a critical Morrey space). Then, asymptotics of subcritical solutions is determined. These results are compared with conditions on the initial data leading to a finite time blowup.
We consider the heat equation with a superlinear absorption term $\partial_{t} u-Δu= -u^{p}$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and study the existence and nonexistence of nonnegative solutions with an $m$-dimensional time-dependent singular set, where $n-m\geq 3$. First, we prove that if $p\geq (n-m)/(n-m-2)$, then there is no singular solution. We next prove that, if $1<p<(n-m)/(n-m-2)$, then there are two types of singular solution. Moreover, we show the uniqueness of the solutions and specify the exact behavior of the solutions near the singular set.
In this paper, we extend the results of [1] by proving exponential asymptotic $H^1$-convergence of solutions to a one-dimensional singular heat equation with $L^2$-source term that describe evolution of viscous thin liquid sheets while considered in the Lagrange coordinates. Furthermore, we extend this asymptotic convergence result to the case of a time inhomogeneous source. This study has also independent interest for the porous medium equation theory.
In this paper, we study the heat equation with an irregular spatially dependent thermal conductivity coefficient. We prove that it has a solution in an appropriate very weak sense. Moreover, the uniqueness result and consistency with the classical solution if the latter exists are shown. Indeed, we allow the coefficient to be a distribution with a toy example of a Delta-function.
We analyze controllability properties for the one-dimensional heat equation with singular inverse-square potential $$ u_t-u_{xx}-\fracμ{x^2}u=0,\;\;\; (x,t)\in(0,1)\times(0,T).$$ For any $μ<1/4$, we prove that the equation is null controllable through a boundary control $f\in H^1(0,T)$ acting at the singularity point $x=0$. This result is obtained employing the moment method by Fattorini and Russell.
We consider the singularity formation of strong solutions to the two-dimensional full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with zero heat conduction in a bounded domain. It is shown that for the initial density allowing vacuum, the strong solution exists globally if the density and the pressure are bounded from above. Critical Sobolev inequalities of logarithmic type play a crucial role in the proof.
We derive the dynamic boundary condition for the heat equation as a limit of boundary layer problems. We study convergence of their weak and strong solutions as the width of the layer tends to zero. We also discuss $Γ$-convergence of the functionals generating these flows. Our analysis of strong solutions depends on a new version of the Reilly identity.
We obtain left and right continuous embeddings for the domains of the complex powers of sectorial $\mathbb{B}$-elliptic cone differential operators. We apply this result to the heat equation on manifolds with conical singularities and provide asymptotic expansions of the unique solution close to the conical points. We further show that the decomposition of the solution in terms of asymptotics spaces, i.e. finite dimensional spaces that describe the domains of the integer powers of the Laplacian and determined by the local geometry around the singularity, is preserved under the evolution.
Nonlinear heat equations in two dimensions with singular initial data are studied. In recent works nonlinearities with exponential growth of Trudinger-Moser type have been shown to manifest critical behavior: well-posedness in the subcritical case and non-existence for certain supercritical data. In this article we propose a specific model nonlinearity with Trudinger-Moser growth for which we obtain surprisingly complete results: a) for initial data strictly below a certain singular threshold function $\widetilde u$ the problem is well-posed, b) for initial data above this threshold function $…
This paper concerns with the heat equation in the half-space $\mathbb{R}_{+}^{n}$ with nonlinearity and singular potential on the boundary $\partial\mathbb{R}_{+}^{n}$. We develop a well-posedness theory (without using Kato and Hardy inequalities) that allows us to consider critical potentials with infinite many singularities and anisotropy. Motivated by potential profiles of interest, the analysis is performed in weak $L^{p}$-spaces in which we prove key linear estimates for some boundary operators arising from the Duhamel integral formulation in $\mathbb{R}_{+}^{n}$. Moreover, we investigate…
We study the singularity formation of strong solutions to the two-dimensional (2D) Cauchy problem of the non-baratropic compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations without heat conductivity. It is proved that the strong solution exists globally if the density and the pressure are bounded from above. In particular, the criterion is independent of the magnetic field and is just the same as that of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Our method relies on weighted energy estimates and a Hardy-type inequality.
The formation of singularity and breakdown of strong solutions to the two-dimensional (2D) Cauchy problem of the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with zero heat conduction are considered. It is shown that for the initial density allowing vacuum, the strong solution exists globally if the density $ρ$ and the pressure $P$ satisfy $\|ρ\|_{L^{\infty}(0,T;L^\infty)}+\|P\|_{L^{\infty}(0,T;L^\infty)}<\infty$. In addition, the initial density can even have compact support. The logarithm-type estimate for the Lam{é} system and some weighted estimates play a crucial role in the proof.
This article is devoted to the analysis of control properties for a heat equation with singular potential $μ/δ^2$, defined on a bounded $C^2$ domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$, where $δ$ is the distance to the boundary function. More precisely, we show that for any $μ\leq 1/4$ the system is exactly null controllable using a distributed control located in any open subset of $Ω$, while for $μ>1/4$ there is no way of preventing the solutions of the equation from blowing-up. The result is obtained applying a new Carleman estimate.
In this paper we analyze a nonlinear parabolic equation characterized by a singular diffusion term describing very fast diffusion effects. The equation is settled in a smooth bounded three-dimensional domain and complemented with a general boundary condition of dynamic type. This type of condition prescribes some kind of mass conservation; hence extinction effects are not expected for solutions that emanate from strictly positive initial data. Our main results regard existence of weak solutions, instantaneous regularization properties, long-time behavior, and, under special conditions, uniquen…
We construct a solution for a class of strongly perturbed semilinear heat equations which blows up in finite time with a prescribed blow-up profile. The construction relies on the reduction of the problem to a finite dimensional one and the use of index theory to conclude.
We are concerned with the formation of singularity and breakdown of strong solutions to the Cauchy problem of the three-dimensional full compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with zero heat conduction. It is proved that for the initial density allowing vacuum, the strong solution exists globally if the deformation tensor $\mathfrak{D}(\mathbf{u})$ and the pressure $P$ satisfy $\|\mathfrak{D}(\mathbf{u})\|_{L^{1}(0,T;L^\infty)}+\|P\|_{L^{\infty}(0,T;L^\infty)}<\infty$. In particular, the criterion is independent of the magnetic field. The logarithm-type estimate for the Lam{é} system and s…
In this paper we investigate the propagation of singularities in a nonlinear parabolic equation with strong absorption when the absorption potential is strongly degenerate following some curve in the $(x,t)$ space. As a very simplified model, we assume that the heat conduction is constant but the absorption of the media depends stronly of the characteristic of the media. More precisely we suppose that the temperature $u$ is governed by the following equation \label{I-1} \partial_{t}u-Δu+h(x,t)u^p=0\quad \text{in}Q_{T}:=R^N\times (0,T) where $p>1$ and $h\in C(\bar Q_{T})$. We suppose that $h(x,…
In this paper we study removable singularities for solutions of the fractional heat equation in time varying domains. We introduce associated capacities and we study some of its metric and geometric properties.
We study the existence and nonexistence of singular solutions to the equation $u_t-Δu - \fracκ{|x|^2}u+|x|^αu|u|^{p-1}=0$, $p>1$, in $\R^N\times[0,\infty)$, $N\ge 3$, with a singularity at the point $(0,0)$, that is, nonnegative solutions satisfying $u(x,0)=0$ for $x\ne0$, assuming that $\a>-2$ and $κ<\left(\frac{N-2}2\right)^2$. The problem is transferred to the one for a weighted Laplace-Beltrami operator with a non-linear absorbtion, absorbing the Hardy potential in the weight. A classification of a singular solution to the weighted problem either as a {\it source solution} with a multiple …
Existence of a generalized solution to a strongly singular convective elliptic equation in the whole space is established. The differential operator, patterned after the (p,q)-Laplacian, can be non-homogeneous. The result is obtained by solving some regularized problems through fixed point theory, variational methods and compactness results, besides exploiting nonlinear regularity theory and comparison principles.
We consider in this work some class of strongly perturbed for the semilinear heat equation with Sobolev sub-critical power nonlinearity. We first derive a Lyapunov functional in similarity variables and then use it to derive the blow-up rate. We also classify all possible asymptotic behaviors of the solution when it approaches to singularity. Finally, we describe precisely the blow-up profiles corresponding to these behaviors.
We study the existence of sign-changing solutions to the nonlinear heat equation $\partial _t u = Δu + |u|^αu$ on ${\mathbb R}^N $, $N\ge 3$, with $\frac {2} {N-2} < α<α_0$, where $α_0=\frac {4} {N-4+2\sqrt{ N-1 } }\in (\frac {2} {N-2}, \frac {4} {N-2})$, which are singular at $x=0$ on an interval of time. In particular, for certain $μ>0$ that can be arbitrarily large, we prove that for any $u_0 \in \mathrm{L} ^\infty _{\mathrm{loc}} ({\mathbb R}^N \setminus \{ 0 \}) $ which is bounded at infinity and equals $μ|x|^{- \frac {2} {α}}$ in a neighborhood of $0$, there exists a local (in time) solu…
It is known that smooth solutions to the non-isentropic Navier-Stokes equations without heat-conductivity may lose their regularities in finite time in the presence of vacuum. However, in spite of the recent progress on such blowup phenomenon, it remain to give a possible blowup mechanism. In this paper, we present a simple continuation principle for such system, which asserts that the concentration of the density or the temperature occurs in finite time for a large class of smooth initial data, which is responsible for the breakdown of classical solutions. It also give an affirmative answer t…
We obtain heat kernel estimates for a class of fourth order non-uniformly elliptic operators in two dimensions. Contrary to existing results, the operators considered have symbols that are not strongly convex. This rises certain difficulties as it is known that, as opposed to the strongly convex case, there is no absolute exponential constant. Our estimates involve sharp constants and Finsler-type distances that are induced by the operator symbol. The main result is based on two general hypotheses, a weighted Sobolev inequalitry and an interpolation inequality, which are related to the singula…
In this paper we focus on the null controllability problem for the heat equation with the so-called inverse square potential and a memory term. To this aim, we first establish the null controllability for a nonhomogeneous singular heat equation by a new Carleman inequality with weights which do not blow up at t=0. Then the null controllability property is proved for the singular heat equation with memory under a condition on the kernel, by means of Kakutani's fixed-point Theorem.
Let $(X,g)$ be a product cone with the metric $g=dr^2+r^2h$, where $X=C(Y)=(0,\infty)_r\times Y$ and the cross section $Y$ is a $(n-1)$-dimensional closed Riemannian manifold $(Y,h)$. We study the upper boundedness of heat kernel associated with the operator $L_V=-Δ_g+V_0 r^{-2}$, where $-Δ_g$ is the positive Friedrichs extension Laplacian on $X$ and $V=V_0(y) r^{-2}$ and $V_0\in\mathcal{C}^\infty(Y)$ is a real function such that the operator $-Δ_h+V_0+(n-2)^2/4$ is a strictly positive operator on $L^2(Y)$.The new ingredient of the proof is the Hadamard parametrix and finite propagation speed …
In this paper, we are concerned with a Kirchhoff problem in the presence of a strongly-singular term perturbed by a discontinuous nonlinearity of the Heaviside type in the setting of Orlicz-Sobolev space. The presence of both strongly-singular and non-continuous terms bring up difficulties in associating a differentiable functional to the problem with finite energy in the whole space $W_0^{1,Φ}(Ω)$. To overcome this obstacle, we established an optimal condition for the existence of $W_0^{1,Φ}(Ω)$-solutions to a strongly-singular problem, which allows us to constrain the energy functional to a …
A $p$-Laplacian elliptic problem in the presence of both strongly singular and $(p-1)$-superlinear nonlinearities is considered. We employ bifurcation theory, approximation techniques and sub-supersolution method to establish the existence of an unbounded branch of positive solutions, which is bounded in positive $λ-$direction and bifurcates from infinity at $λ=0$. As consequence of the bifurcation result, we determine intervals of existence, nonexistence and, in particular cases, global multiplicity.
We prove existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions of nonlocal heat equations associated to anisotropic stable diffusion operators. The main features are that the right-hand side has very few regularity and that the spectral measure can be singular in some directions. The proofs require having good enough estimates for the corresponding heat kernels and their derivatives.
Asymptotic behavior of solutions to heat equations with spatially singular inverse-square potentials is studied. By combining a parabolic Almgren type monotonicity formula with blow-up methods, we evaluate the exact behavior near the singularity of solutions to linear and subcritical semilinear parabolic equations with Hardy type potentials. As a remarkable byproduct, a unique continuation property is obtained.
In this note we address the continuity of strongly singular Calderón-Zygmund operators on Hardy-Morrey spaces $\mathcal{HM}_{q}^λ(\mathbb{R}^n)$, assuming weaker integral conditions on the associated kernel. Important examples that falls into this scope are pseudodifferential operators on the Hörmander classes $OpS^{m}_{σ,μ}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ with $0<σ\leq 1$, $0 \leq μ<1$, $μ\leq σ$ and $m\leq -n(1-σ)/2$.
We study integrability conditions for existence and nonexistence of a local-in-time integral solution of fractional semilinear heat equations with rather general growing nonlinearities in uniformly local $L^p$ spaces. Our main results about this matter consist of Theorems 1.4, 1.6, 5.1 and 5.3. We introduce a new supersolution which plays a crucial role. Our method does not rely on a change of variables, and hence it can be applied to a wide class of nonlocal parabolic equations. In particular, when the nonlinear term is $u^p$ or $e^u$, a local-in-time solution can be constructed in the critic…
A general class of strongly coupled elliptic systems with quadratic growth in gradients is considered and the existence of their strong solutions is established. The results greatly improve those in a recent paper \cite{dleJFA} as the systems can be either degenerate or singular when their solutions become unbounded. A unified proof for both cases is presented. Most importantly, the VMO assumption in \cite{dleJFA} will be replaced by a much versatile one thanks to a new local weighted Gagliardo-Nirenberg involving BMO norms. Examples in physical models will be provided.
We consider solutions of the linear heat equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with isolated singularities. It is assumed that the position of a singular point depends on time and is Hölder continuous with the exponent $α\in (0,1)$. We show that any isolated singularity is removable if it is weaker than a certain order depending on $α$. We also show the optimality of the removability condition by showing the existence of a solution with a nonremovable singularity. These results are applied to the case where the singular point behaves like a fractional Brownian motion with the Hurst exponent $H \in (0,1/2…
