This paper establishes suficient conditions for the orbital stability of one-parameter spatially periodic traveling-wave solutions for one-dimensional dispersive equations. Our method of proof combines known techniques with some new ideas. As a consequence of our result, we give several applications for well known dispersive equations. Extension of the theory to regularized equations is also established.
We consider the stability and instability of periodic travling waves for Korteweg-de Vries type equations with fractional dispersion and other nonlinear dispersive equations. We establish that a constrained minimizer for the related variational problem is nonlinearly stable to period preserving perturbations. We also discuss when the associated linearized equation admits exponentially growing solutions. The proof utilizes the variational structure of the equation.
In this paper, we establish a new criterion for the orbital stability of periodic waves related to a general class of regularized dispersive equations. More specifically, we present sufficient conditions for the stability without knowing the positiveness of the associated hessian matrix. As application of our method, we show the orbital stability for the fifth-order model. The orbital stability of periodic waves resulting from a minimization of a convenient functional is also proved.
In this paper we establish the orbital stability of periodic traveling waves for a general class of dispersive equations. We use the Implicit Function Theorem to guarantee the existence of smooth solutions depending of the corresponding wave speed. Essentially, our method establishes that if the linearized operator has only one negative eigenvalue which is simple and zero is a simple eigenvalue the orbital stability is determined provided that a convenient condition about the average of the wave is satisfied. We use our approach to prove the orbital stability of periodic dnoidal waves associat…
Of concern is the a priori symmetry of traveling wave solutions for a general class of nonlocal dispersive equations \[ u_t +(u^2 +Lu)_x =0, \] where $L$ is a Fourier multiplier operator with symbol $m$. Our analysis includes both homogeneous and inhomogeneous symbols. We characterize a class of symbols $m$ guaranteeing that periodic traveling wave solutions are symmetric under a mild assumption on the wave profile. Particularly, instead of considering waves with a unique crest and trough per period or a monotone structure near troughs as classically imposed in the water wave problem, we formu…
The aim is to assess the combined effect of diffusion and dispersion on shocks in the moderate dispersion regime. For a diffusive dispersive approximation of the equations of one-dimensional elasticity (or p-system), we study convergence of traveling waves to shocks. The problem is recast as a Hamiltonian system with small friction, and an analysis of the length of oscillations yields convergence in the moderate dispersion regime $\eps, δ\to 0$ with $δ= o(\eps)$, under hypotheses that the limiting shock is admissible according to the Liu E-condition and is not a contact discontinuity at either…
Scalar conservation laws with non-convex fluxes have shock wave solutions that violate the Lax entropy condition. In this paper, such solutions are selected by showing that some of them have corresponding traveling waves for the equation supplemented with dissipative and dispersive higher-order terms. For a cubic flux, traveling waves can be calculated explicitly for linear dissipative and dispersive terms. Information about their existence can be used to solve the Riemann problem, in which we find solutions for some data that are different from the classical Lax-Oleinik construction. We consi…
We prove the orbital stability of periodic traveling-wave solutions for systems of dispersive equations with coupled nonlinear terms. Our method is basically developed under two assumptions: one concerning the spectrum of the linearized operator around the traveling wave and another one concerning the existence of a conserved quantity with suitable properties. The method can be applied to several systems such as the Liu-Kubota-Ko system, the modified KdV system and a log-KdV type system.
In this paper, we prove the nonlinear orbital stability of the stationary traveling wave of the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation by using Zakharov-Shabat's inverse scattering method.
The present paper deals with sufficient conditions for orbital stability of periodic waves of a general class of evolution equations supporting nonlinear dispersive waves. Our method can be seen as an extension to spatially periodic waves of the theory of solitary waves recently developed in \cite{st}. Firstly, our main result do not depend on the parametrization of the periodic wave itself. Secondly, motived by the well known orbital stability criterion for solitary waves, we show that the same criterion holds for periodic waves. In addition, we show that the positiveness of the principal ent…
We consider a one-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg equation coupled to a conservation law, where both equations contain additional dispersive terms breaking the reflection symmetry $x \mapsto -x$. This system exhibits a Turing instability and we study the dynamics close to the onset of this instability. First, we show that periodic traveling waves bifurcate from a homogeneous ground state. Second, fixing the bifurcation parameter close to the onset of instability, we construct modulating traveling fronts, which capture the process of pattern-formation by modeling the transition from the homogeneous…
In this work we study the orbital stability of periodic traveling-wave solutions for dispersive models. The study of traveling waves started in the mid-18th century when John S. Russel established that the flow of water waves in a shallow channel has constant evolution. In recent years, the general strategy to obtain orbital stability consists in proving that the traveling wave in question minimizes a conserved functional restricted to a certain manifold. Although our method can be applied to other models, we deal with the regularized Schamel equation, which contains a fractional nonlinear ter…
New results concerning the orbital stability of periodic traveling wave solutions for the "abcd" Boussinesq model will be shown in this manuscript. For the existence of solutions, we use basic tools of ordinary differential equations to show that the corresponding periodic wave depends on the Jacobi elliptic function of cnoidal type. The spectral analysis for the associated linearized operator is determined by using some tools concerning the Floquet theory. The orbital stability is then established by applying the abstract results [2] and [14] which give us sufficient conditions to the orbital…
Choosing $κ$ (horizontal ordinate of the saddle point associated to the homoclinic orbit) as bifurcation parameter, bifurcations of the travelling wave solutions is studied in a perturbed $(1 + 1)$-dimensional dispersive long wave equation. The solitary wave solution exists at a suitable wave speed $c$ for the bifurcation parameter $κ\in (0,1-\frac{\sqrt3}{3})\cup (1+\frac{\sqrt3}{3},2)$, while the kink and anti-kink wave solutions exist at a unique wave speed $c^*=\sqrt{15}/3$ for $κ=0$ or $κ=2$. The methods are based on the geometric singular perturbation (GSP, for short) approach, Melnikov …
Considered in this report is the one-dimensional fourth-order dispersive cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with mixed dispersion. Orbital stability, in the energy space, of a particular standing-wave solution is proved in the context of Hamiltonian systems. The main result is established by constructing a suitable Lyapunov function.
In this paper we present a rigorous modulational stability theory for periodic traveling wave solutions to equations of nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) type. We first argue that, for Hamiltonian dispersive equations with a non-singular symplectic form and $d$ conserved quantities (in addition to the Hamiltonian), one expects that generically ${\mathcal L}$, the linearization around a periodic traveling wave, will have a $2d$ dimensional generalized kernel, with a particular Jordan structure: The kernel of ${\mathcal L}$ is expected to be $d$ dimensional, the first generalized kernel is expected to…
We consider the focusing energy-critical Schr{ö}dinger equation on the Heisenberg group in the radial case\[i\partial_t u-Δ_{\mathbb{H}^1} u=|u|^2u,\quadΔ_{\mathbb{H}^1}=\frac{1}{4}(\partial_x^2+\partial_y^2)+(x^2+y^2)\partial_s^2,\quad(t,x,y,s)\in \mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{H}^1,\]which is a model for non-dispersive evolution equations. For this equation, existence of smooth global solutions and uniqueness of weak solutions in the energy space are open problems. We are interested in a family of ground state traveling waves parametrized by their speed $β\in (-1,1)$. We show that the traveling wav…
We consider the existence of periodic traveling waves in a bidirectional Whitham equation, combining the full two-way dispersion relation from the incompressible Euler equations with a canonical shallow water nonlinearity. Of particular interest is the existence of a highest, cusped, traveling wave solution, which we obtain as a limiting case at the end of the main bifurcation branch of $2π$-periodic traveling wave solutions continuing from the zero state. Unlike the unidirectional Whitham equation, containing only one branch of the full Euler dispersion relation, where such a highest wave beh…
In this paper, we determine orbital and linear stability of periodic waves with the mean zero property related to the Intermediate Long Wave equation. Our arguments follow the recent developments in \cite{andrade-pastor}, \cite{natali} and \cite{DK} to deduce the orbital/linear stability of periodic traveling waves.
We study dispersive models of fluid flow in viscoelastic vessels, derived in the study of blood flow. The unknowns in the models are the velocity of the fluid in the axial direction and the displacement of the vessel wall from rest. We prove that one such model has a well-posed initial value problem, while we argue that a related model instead has an ill-posed initial value problem; in the second case, we still prove the existence of solutions in analytic function spaces. Finally we prove the existence of some periodic traveling waves.
In this paper we investigate spectral stability of traveling wave solutions to 1-$D$ quantum hydrodynamics system with nonlinear viscosity in the $(ρ,u)$, that is, density and velocity, variables. We derive a sufficient condition for the stability of the essential spectrum and we estimate the maximum modulus of eigenvalues with non-negative real part. In addition, we present numerical computations of the Evans function in sufficiently large domain of the unstable half-plane and show numerically that its winding number is (approximately) zero, thus giving a numerical evidence of point spectrum …
In this paper, we present the first result concerning the orbital stability of periodic traveling waves for the modified Kawahara equation. Our method is based on the Fourier expansion of the periodic wave in order to know the behaviour of the nonpositive spectrum of the associated linearized operator around the periodic wave combined with a recent development which significantly simplifies the obtaining of orbital stability results.
We investigate the properties of traveling wave solutions to hyperbolic conservation laws augmented with diffusion and dispersion, and review the existence and qualitative properties of the associated kinetic functions, which characterize the class of admissible shock waves selected by such regularizations.
We consider the orbital stability of solitons of the Kadomtsev--Petviashvili-I equation in $\mathbb{R} \times (\mathbb{R}/2π\mathbb{Z})$ which is one of a high dimensional generalization of the Korteweg--de Vries equation. Benjamin showed that the Korteweg--de Vries equation possesses the stable one soliton. We regard the one soliton of the Korteweg--de Vries equation as a line soliton of the Kadomtsev--Petviashvili-I equation. Zakharov and Rousset--Tzvetkov proved the orbital instability of the line solitons of the Kadomtsev--Petviashvili-I equation on $\mathbb{R}^2$. In the case of the Kadom…
We prove nonlinear modulational instability for both periodic and localized perturbations of periodic traveling waves for several dispersive PDEs, including the KDV type equations (e.g. the Whitham equation, the generalized KDV equation, the Benjamin-Ono equation), the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the BBM equation. First, the semigroup estimates required for the nonlinear proof are obtained by using the Hamiltonian structures of the linearized PDEs; Second, for KDV type equations the loss of derivative in the nonlinear term is overcome in two complementary cases: (1) for smooth nonlinear…
In this paper, we study the orbital stability for a four-parameter family of periodic stationary traveling wave solutions to the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation. In particular, we derive sufficient conditions for such a solution to be orbitally stable in terms of the Hessian of the classical action of the corresponding traveling wave ordinary differential equation restricted to the manifold of periodic traveling wave solution. We show this condition is equivalent to the solution being spectrally stable with respect to perturbations of the same period in the case of the Korteweg-de Vries…
In this article we are concerned with the existence and orbital stability of traveling wave solutions of a general class of nonlocal wave equations: $ u_{tt}-Lu_{xx}=B(\pm |u|^{p-1}u)_{xx}$, $ p>1$. The main characteristic of this class of equations is the existence of two sources of dispersion, characterized by two coercive pseudo-differential operators $L$ and $B$. Members of the class arise as mathematical models for the propagation of dispersive waves in a wide variety of situations. For instance, all Boussinesq-type equations and the so-called double-dispersion equation are members of the…
We consider radial solutions to the cubic Schr{ö}dinger equation on the Heisenberg group$$i\partial_t u - Δ_{\mathbb{H}^1} u = |u|^2u, \quadΔ_{\mathbb{H}^1} = \frac{1}{4}(\partial_x^2+\partial_y^2) + (x^2+y^2)\partial_s^2, \quad(t,x,y,s) \in \mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{H}^1.$$This equation is a model for totally non-dispersive evolution equations. We show existence of ground state traveling waves with speed $β\in (-1,1)$. When the speed $β$ is sufficiently close to $1$, we prove their uniqueness up to symmetries and their smoothness along the parameter $β$. The main ingredient is the emergence of …
We give a complete classification of the traveling waves of the following quadratic Szeg{ö} equation : $i \partial\_t u = 2JΠ(|u|^2)+\bar{J}u^2, \quad u(0, \cdot)=u\_0$, and we show that they are given by two families of rational functions, one of which is generated by a stable ground state. We prove that the other branch is orbitally unstable.
In this article we are concerned with the instability and stability properties of traveling wave solutions of the double dispersion equation $~u_{tt} -u_{xx}+a u_{xxxx}-bu_{xxtt} = - (|u|^{p-1}u)_{xx}~$ for $~p>1$, $~a\geq b>0$. The main characteristic of this equation is the existence of two sources of dispersion, characterized by the terms $u_{xxxx}$ and $u_{xxtt}$. We obtain an explicit condition in terms of $a$, $b$ and $p$ on wave velocities ensuring that traveling wave solutions of the double dispersion equation are strongly unstable by blow up. In the special case of the Boussinesq equa…
We discuss the recent paper by A. Darós and L.K. Arruda (On the instability of elliptic traveling wave solutions of the modified Camassa-Holm equation, J. Diff. Equat., 266 (2019), 1946-1968). Our intention is to correct some imperfections left by the authors and present the orbital stability of periodic snoidal waves in the energy space.
We analyze the stationary and traveling wave solutions to a family of degenerate dispersive equations of KdV and NLS-type. In stark contrast to the standard soliton solutions for non-degenerate KdV and NLS equations, the degeneracy of the elliptic operators studied here allows for compactly supported steady or traveling states. As we work in $1$ dimension, ODE methods apply, however the models considered have formally conserved Hamiltonian, Mass and Momentum functionals, which allow for variational analysis as well.
We consider the cubic Szego equation i u_t=Pi(|u|^2u) on the real line, with solutions in the Hardy space on the upper half-plane, where Pi is the Szego projector onto the non-negative frequencies. This equation was recently introduced by P. Gerard and S. Grellier as a toy model for totally non-dispersive evolution equations. We show that the only traveling waves are rational functions with one simple pole. Moreover, they are shown to be orbitally stable, in contrast to the situation of the circle S^1 studied by the above authors, where some traveling waves were shown to be unstable.
The Lamb dipole is a traveling wave solution to the two-dimensional Euler equations introduced by S. A. Chaplygin (1903) and H. Lamb (1906) at the early 20th century. We prove orbital stability of this solution based on a vorticity method initiated by V. I. Arnold. Our method is a minimization of a penalized energy with multiple constraints that deduces existence and orbital stability for a family of traveling waves. As a typical case, orbital stability of the Lamb dipole is deduced by characterizing a set of minimizers as an orbit of the dipole by a uniqueness theorem in the variational setti…
We study the local dynamics near general unstable traveling waves of the 3D Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the energy space by constructing smooth local invariant center-stable, center-unstable and center manifolds. We also prove that (i) the center-unstable manifold attracts nearby orbits exponentially before they get away from the traveling waves along the center directions and (ii) if an initial data is not on the center-stable manifolds, then the forward flow will be ejected away from traveling waves exponentially fast. Furthermore, under a non-degenerate assumption, we show the orbital stab…
We consider reaction-diffusion equations that are stochastically forced by a small multiplicative noise term. We show that spectrally stable traveling wave solutions to the deterministic system retain their orbital stability if the amplitude of the noise is sufficiently small. By applying a stochastic phase-shift together with a time-transform, we obtain a quasi-linear SPDE that describes the fluctuations from the primary wave. We subsequently follow the semigroup approach developed by Hamster and Hupkes in 2017 to handle the nonlinear stability question. The main novel feature is that we no l…
We show existence of small solitary and periodic traveling-wave solutions in Sobolev spaces ${\mathrm{H}^s}$, ${ s > 0 }$, to a class of nonlinear, dispersive evolution equations of the form \begin{equation*} u_t + \left(Lu+ n(u)\right)_x = 0, \end{equation*} where the dispersion ${L}$ is a negative-order Fourier multiplier whose symbol is of KdV type at low frequencies and has integrable Fourier inverse ${ K }$ and the nonlinearity ${n}$ is inhomogeneous, locally Lipschitz and of superlinear growth at the origin. This generalises earlier work by Ehrnström, Groves & Wahlén on a class of equati…
We study the influence of Szeg{ö} projector $Π$ on the L 2 --critical one-dimensional non linear focusing Schr{ö}dinger equation, leading to the quintic focusing NLS-Szeg{ö} equation i$\partial$ t u + $\partial$ 2 x u + $Π$(|u| 4 u) = 0, (t, x) $\in$ R x R, u(0, $\times$) = u 0. This equation is globally well-posed in H 1 + = $Π$(H 1 (R)), for every initial datum u 0. The solution L 2-scatters both forward and backward in time if u 0 has sufficiently small mass. We prove the orbital stability with scaling of the traveling wave : u $ω$,c (t, x) = e i$ω$t Q(x + ct), for some $ω$, c > 0, where Q …
The purpose of this paper is to prove that, for a large class of nonlinear evolution equations known as scalar viscous balance laws, the spectral (linear) instability condition of periodic traveling wave solutions implies their orbital (nonlinear) instability in appropriate periodic Sobolev spaces. The analysis is based on the well-posedness theory, the smoothness of the data-solution map, and an abstract result of instability of equilibria under nonlinear iterations. The resulting instability criterion is applied to two families of periodic waves. The first family consists of small amplitude …
We consider the third order Benjamin-Ono equation on the torus $\partial_t u= \partial_x \left( -\partial_{xx}u-\frac{3}{2}u H\partial_x u - \frac{3}{2}H(u\partial_x u) + u^3 \right).$ We prove that for any $t\in\mathbb{R}$, the flow map continuously extends to $H^s_{r,0}(\mathbb{T})$ if $s\geq 0$, but does not admit a continuous extension to $H^{-s}_{r,0}(\mathbb{T})$ if $0<s<\frac{1}{2}$. Moreover, we show that the extension is not weakly sequentially continuous in $L^2_{r,0}(\mathbb{T})$. We then classify the traveling wave solutions for the third order Benjamin-Ono equation in $L^2_{r,0}(\…

We improve the decay argument by [Bona and Li, J. Math. Pures Appl., 1997] for solitary waves of general dispersive equations and illustrate it in the proof for the exponential decay of solitary waves to steady Degasperis-Procesi equation in the nonlocal formulation. In addition, we give a method which confirms the symmetry of solitary waves of the maximum height. Finally, we discover how the symmetric structure is connected to the steady structure of solutions to the Degasperis-Procesi equation, and give a more intuitive proof for symmetric solutions to be traveling waves. The improved argume…
