This paper studies traveling waves with nonzero wave speed (angular traveling waves) of the high-dimensional Boussinesq equation that have not been studied before. We analyze the properties of these waves and demonstrate that, unlike the unique stationary solution, they lack positivity, radial symmetry, and exponential decay. By employing variational and geometric approaches, along with perturbation theory, we establish the orbital (in)stability and strong instability of these traveling waves.
In this paper, we study the existence and asymptotic properties of the traveling vortex pairs for the two-dimensional inviscid incompressible Boussinesq equations. We construct a family of traveling vorticity pairs, which constitutes the de-singularization of a pair of point vortices with equal intensity but opposite sign. Using the improved vorticity method, we also give limiting position of the supports of vorticities.
We consider the spectral stability of certain traveling wave solutions of the Boussinesq `abc' system. More precisely, we consider the explicit $sech^2(x)$ like solutions of the form $(\vp(x-w t), ψ(x- w t)=(\vp, const. \vp)$, exhibited by M. Chen (1998) and we provide a complete rigorous characterization of the spectral stability in all cases for which $a=c<0, b>0$.
We extend earlier work on traveling waves in premixed flames in a gravitationally stratified medium, subject to the Boussinesq approximation. For three-dimensional channels not aligned with the gravity direction and under the Dirichlet boundary conditions in the fluid velocity, it is shown that a non-planar traveling wave, corresponding to a non-zero reaction, exists, under an explicit condition relating the geometry of the crossection of the channel to the magnitude of the Prandtl and Rayleigh numbers, or when the advection term in the flow equations is neglected.
The question for linear stability of spatially periodic waves for the Boussinesq equation (the cases $p=2,3$) and the Klein-Gordon-Zakharov system is considered. For a wide class of solutions, we completely and explicitly characterize their linear stability (instability respectively), when the perturbations are taken with the same period $T$. In particular, our results allow us to completely recover the linear stability results, in the limit $T\to \infty$, for the whole line case.
New results concerning the orbital stability of periodic traveling wave solutions for the "abcd" Boussinesq model will be shown in this manuscript. For the existence of solutions, we use basic tools of ordinary differential equations to show that the corresponding periodic wave depends on the Jacobi elliptic function of cnoidal type. The spectral analysis for the associated linearized operator is determined by using some tools concerning the Floquet theory. The orbital stability is then established by applying the abstract results [2] and [14] which give us sufficient conditions to the orbital…
We obtain a one-parameter family $$(u_μ(x,t),η_μ(x,t))_{μ\geq μ_0}=(ϕ_μ(x-ω_μ t),ψ_μ(x-ω_μ t))_{μ\geq μ_0}$$ of traveling-wave solutions to the Boussinesq system $$u_t+η_x+uu_x+cη_{xxx}=0,η_t+u_x+(ηu)_x+au_{xxx}=0$$ in the case $a,c<0$, with non-null speeds $ω_μ$ arbitrarily close to $0$ ($ω_μ\xrightarrow[μ\to+\infty]{} 0$). We show that the $L^2$-size of such traveling-waves satisfies the uniform (in $μ$) estimate $\|ϕ_μ\|_2^2+\|ψ_μ\|_2^2\leq C\sqrt{|a|+|c|},$ where $C$ is a positive constant. Furthermore, $ϕ_μ$ and $-ψ_μ$ are smooth, non-negative, radially decreasing functions which decay ex…
We consider the reactive Boussinesq equations in a slanted cylinder, with zero stress boundary conditions and arbitrary Rayleigh number. We show that the equations have non-planar traveling front solutions that propagate at a constant speed. We also establish uniform upper bounds on the burning rate and the flow velocity for general front-like initial data for the Cauchy problem.
We consider the 2D Boussinesq equations with viscous but without thermal dissipation and observe that in any neighborhood of Couette flow and hydrostatic balance (with respect to local norms) there are time-dependent traveling wave solutions of the form $ω=-1+f(t)\cos(x-ty)$, $θ=αy + g(t)\sin(x-ty)$. As our main result we show that the linearized equations around these waves for $α=0$ exhibit echo chains and norm inflation despite viscous dissipation of the velocity. Furthermore, we construct initial data in a critical Gevrey 3 class, for which temperature and vorticity diverge to infinity in …
In this work, we consider the following generalized Boussinesq equation \begin{align*} \partial_{t}^2u-\partial_{x}^2u+\partial_{x}^2(\partial_{x}^2u+|u|^{p}u)=0,\qquad (t,x)\in\mathbb R\times \mathbb R, \end{align*} with $0<p<\infty$. This equation has the traveling wave solutions $ϕ_ω(x-ωt)$, with the frequency $ω\in (-1,1)$ and $ϕ_ω$ satisfying \begin{align*} -\partial_{xx}ϕ_ω+(1-{ω^2})ϕ_ω-ϕ_ω^{p+1}=0. \end{align*} Bona and Sachs (1988) proved that the traveling wave $ϕ_ω(x-ωt)$ is orbitally stable when $0<p<4,$ $\frac p4<ω^2<1$. Liu (1993) proved the orbital instability under the condition…
We analyze the spectral stability of small-amplitude, periodic, traveling-wave solutions of a Boussinesq-Whitham system. These solutions are shown numerically to exhibit high-frequency instabilities when subject to bounded perturbations on the real line. We use a formal perturbation method to estimate the asymptotic behavior of these instabilities in the small-amplitude regime. We compare these asymptotic results with direct numerical computations. This is the second paper in a series of three that investigates high-frequency instabilities of Stokes waves.
We study the stability and instability of periodic traveling waves in the vicinity of the origin in the spectral plane, for equations of Benjamin- Bona-Mahony (BBM) and regularized Boussinesq types permitting nonlocal dispersion. We extend recent results for equations of Korteweg-de Vries type and derive modulational instability indices as functions of the wave number of the underlying wave. We show that a sufficiently small, periodic traveling wave of the BBM equation is spectrally unstable to long wavelength perturbations if the wave number is greater than a critical value and a sufficiently…
We consider a dissipative, dispersive system of Boussinesq type, describing wave phenomena in settings where dissipation has an effect. Examples include undular bores in rivers or oceans where dissipation due to turbulence is important for their description. We show that the model system admits traveling wave solutions known as diffusive-dispersive shock waves, and we categorize them into oscillatory and regularized shock waves depending on the relationship between dispersion and dissipation. Comparison of numerically computed solutions with laboratory data suggests that undular bores are accu…
We develop a general theory for linear stability of traveling waves of second order in time PDE's. More precisely, we introduce an explicitly computable index $\om^*\in (0, \infty]$ (depending on the self-adjoint part of the linearized operator) so that the wave is stable if and only if $|c|\geq \om^*$. The results are applicable both in the periodic case and in the whole line case. As an application, we consider three classical models - the Boussinesq equation, the Klein-Gordon-Zakharov (KGZ) system and the fourth order beam equation. For the Boussinesq model and the KGZ system (and as a dire…
In this article we are concerned with the instability and stability properties of traveling wave solutions of the double dispersion equation $~u_{tt} -u_{xx}+a u_{xxxx}-bu_{xxtt} = - (|u|^{p-1}u)_{xx}~$ for $~p>1$, $~a\geq b>0$. The main characteristic of this equation is the existence of two sources of dispersion, characterized by the terms $u_{xxxx}$ and $u_{xxtt}$. We obtain an explicit condition in terms of $a$, $b$ and $p$ on wave velocities ensuring that traveling wave solutions of the double dispersion equation are strongly unstable by blow up. In the special case of the Boussinesq equa…
In this article we are concerned with the existence and orbital stability of traveling wave solutions of a general class of nonlocal wave equations: $ u_{tt}-Lu_{xx}=B(\pm |u|^{p-1}u)_{xx}$, $ p>1$. The main characteristic of this class of equations is the existence of two sources of dispersion, characterized by two coercive pseudo-differential operators $L$ and $B$. Members of the class arise as mathematical models for the propagation of dispersive waves in a wide variety of situations. For instance, all Boussinesq-type equations and the so-called double-dispersion equation are members of the…
The aim is to assess the combined effect of diffusion and dispersion on shocks in the moderate dispersion regime. For a diffusive dispersive approximation of the equations of one-dimensional elasticity (or p-system), we study convergence of traveling waves to shocks. The problem is recast as a Hamiltonian system with small friction, and an analysis of the length of oscillations yields convergence in the moderate dispersion regime $\eps, δ\to 0$ with $δ= o(\eps)$, under hypotheses that the limiting shock is admissible according to the Liu E-condition and is not a contact discontinuity at either…
It is well known that the existence of traveling wave solutions (TWS) for many partial differential equations (PDE) is a consequence of the fact that an associated planar ordinary differential equation (ODE) has certain types of solutions defined for all time. In this paper we address the problem of persistence of TWS of a given PDE under small perturbations. Our main results deal with the situation where the associated ODE has a center and, as a consequence, the original PDE has a continuum of periodic traveling wave solutions. We prove that the TWS that persist are controlled by the zeroes o…
Primarily motivated by the stability analysis of nonlinear waves in second-order in time Hamiltonian systems, in this paper we develop an instability index theory for quadratic operator pencils acting on a Hilbert space. In an extension of the known theory for linear pencils, explicit connections are made between the number of eigenvalues of a given quadratic operator pencil with positive real parts to spectral information about the individual operators comprising the coefficients of the spectral parameter in the pencil. As an application, we apply the general theory developed here to yield sp…
