For purposes of quantization, classical gravity is normally expressed by canonical variables, namely the metric $g_{ab}(x)$ and the momentum $π^{cd}(x)$. Canonical quantization requires a proper promotion of these classical variables to quantum operators, which, according to Dirac, the favored operators should be those arising from classical variables that formed Cartesian coordinates; sadly, in this case, that is not possible. However, an affine quantization features promoting the metric $g_{ab}(x)$ and the momentric $π^c_d(x)\;[\equiv π^{ce}(x) \,g_{de}(x)]$ to operators. Instead of these classical variables belonging to a constant zero curvature space (i.e., instead of a flat space), they belong to a space of constant negative curvatures. This feature may even have its appearance in black holes, which could strongly point toward an affine quantization approach to quantize gravity.
We consider modified $f(R)$ gravity with a kinetic curvature scalar as a chiral self-gravitating model in a spherically symmetric spacetime. Most attention devoted to finding solutions for special case of scaling transformation when modified gravity transforms to Einstein frame from Jordan one. We proposed the method of determination of kinetic function for given scalar field dependence on space coordinate. New classes of solutions are found for special choice of $f(R)$ function.
A short review of scalar curvature invariants in gravity theories is presented. We introduce how these invariants are constructed and discuss the minimal number of invariants required for a given spacetime. We then discuss applications of these invariants and focus on three topics that are of particular interest in modern gravity theories.
We construct higher-order curvature invariants in causal set quantum gravity. The motivation for this work is twofold: first, to characterize causal sets, discrete operators that encode geometric information on the emergent spacetime manifold, e.g., its curvature invariants, are indispensable. Second, to make contact with the asymptotic-safety approach to quantum gravity in Lorentzian signature and find a second-order phase transition in the phase diagram for causal sets, going beyond the discrete analogue of the Einstein-Hilbert action may be critical.\\ Therefore, we generalize the discrete …
We discuss a recently proposed limiting curvature theory of gravity and its application to the problem of singularities inside black holes. In this theory the growth of the curvature is suppressed by specially chosen inequality constraints included in the gravity action. We consider a case of a spherically symmetric four dimensional black hole and demonstrated that imposed curvature constraints modify a solution in the black hole interior. Instead of forming the curvature singularity the modified metric describes a space which is exponentially expanding in one direction and oscillating the oth…
We construct two types of Eguchi-Hanson metrics with the negative constant scalar curvature. The type I metrics are Kähler. The type II metrics are ALH whose total energy can be negative.
Several studies have been devoted to the possibility that quantum gravity might tangibly affect relativistic kinematics for particles propagating from distant astrophysical sources to our telescopes, but the relevant literature has so far focused exclusively on a subclass of scenarios such that the quantum-gravity effects are independent of (macroscopic) curvature. It was assumed that a phenomenology for quantum-gravity effects that are triggered by curvature might be a dead end because of a double suppression: by the smallness of the characteristic quantum-gravity length scale and by the smal…
The zeroth law of black hole mechanics is an assertion of constancy of the surface gravity on a stationary Killing horizon. The Hawking temperature of the black hole horizon is proportional to the surface gravity. Therefore, the constancy of the surface gravity is reminiscent of the zeroth law of ordinary thermodynamics. In this work, we provide a proof of the zeroth law in Lanczos-Lovelock theories of gravity, where the Einstein Hilbert action is supplemented by higher curvature terms.
We construct a one-parameter family of complete metrics of Horowitz-Myers type with the negative constant scalar curvature. We also verify a positive energy conjecture of Horowitz-Myers for these metrics.
In this paper we describe a model of a four-dimensional spherically symmetric black hole in a limiting curvature theory of gravity. In this theory the Einstein-Hilbert action is modified by adding to the action terms providing inequality constraints on chosen curvature invariants. We demonstrated that in such a model, instead of formation of the curvature singularity, the spacetime remains regular in the black hole interior. For black holes with gravitational radius much larger than the radius $\ell$ of the critical curvature the obtained solutions describe a space exponentially expanding in o…
We provide new formulas for the energy of black hole solutions in the anti-de Sitter (AdS) sector of a generic gravity theory with curvature-squared terms. This is achieved by the addition of counterterms of the extrinsic type (\emph{Kounterterms}) which produces a finite variation of the total action. The procedure is compatible with the boundary conditions in asymptotically AdS spaces within the framework of Quadratic Curvature Gravity (QCG) theory. As a consequence, without resorting to background-substraction, or linearized methods, the conserved charges correctly reproduce the energy of s…
We consider f(R) gravity theories in the presence of a scalar field minimally coupled to gravity with a self-interacting potential. When the scalar field backreacts to the metric we find at large distances scalarized Schwarzschild-AdS and Schwarzschild-AdS-like black hole solutions. At small distances due to strong curvature effects and the scalar dynamis we find a rich structure of scalarized black hole solutions. When the scalar field is conformally coupled to gravity we also find scalarized black hole solutions at small distances.
Building on the recently introduced notion of quantum Ricci curvature and motivated by considerations in nonperturbative quantum gravity, we advocate a new, global observable for curved metric spaces, the curvature profile. It is obtained by integrating the scale-dependent, quasi-local quantum Ricci curvature, and therefore also depends on a coarse-graining scale. To understand how the distribution of local, Gaussian curvature is reflected in the curvature profile, we compute it on a class of regular polygons with isolated conical singularities. We focus on the case of the tetrahedron, for whi…
