Let $ G $ be a locally compact group. We study the categories of $ L^{\infty}(G) $-comodules and $ L(G) $-comodules in the setting of dual operator spaces and the associated crossed products. It is proved that every $ L^{\infty}(G) $-comodule is non-degenerate and saturated, whereas every $ L(G) $-comodule is non-degenerate if and only if every $ L(G) $-comodule is saturated if and only if $ G $ has the approximation property in the sense of Haagerup and Kraus [14]. This allows us to extend known results from the duality theory of crossed products of von Neumann algebras (such as Takesaki-duality and the Digernes-Takesaki theorem) to the recent theory of crossed products of dual operator spaces. As applications, we obtain a characterization of groups with the approximation property in terms of the related crossed products improving a recent result of Crann and Neufang [9] and we generalize a theorem of Anoussis, Katavolos and Todorov [2] providing a less technical proof of it. Furthermore, this approach provides an answer to a question raised by the authors in [2].
If $α$ is an amenable action of a discrete group $G$ on a unital C*-algebra $A$, then the crossed-product C*-algebra $A\rtimes_αG$ has the weak expectation property if and only if $A$ has this property.
We discuss the crossed product by the dual action of the circle on the crossed product of a C*-algebra A by a Hilbert C*-bimodule X. When X is an A-A Morita equivalence bimodule, the double crossed product is shown to be Morita equivalent to the C*-algebra A.
We introduce and study a Rokhlin-type property for actions of finite groups on (not necessarily unital) C*-algebras. We show that the corresponding crossed product C*-algebras can be locally approximated by C*-algebras that are stably isomorphic to closed two-sided ideals of the given algebra. We then use this result to prove that several classes of C*-algebras are closed under crossed products by finite group actions with this Rokhlin property.
We generalize the main result of Kamalov and show that if $G$ is an amenable discrete group with an action $α$ on a finite nuclear unital $C^*$-algebra $A$ such that the reduced crossed product $A\rtimes_{α,r} G$ has property $T$, then $G$ is finite and $A$ is finite dimensional. As an application, an infinite discrete group $H$ is non-amenable if and only if the uniform Roe algebra $C^*_u(H)$ has property $T$.
We define the tracial Rokhlin property for actions of finite cyclic groups on stably finite simple unital C*-algebras. We prove that when the algebra is in addition simple and has tracial rank zero, then the crossed product again has tracial rank zero. Under a kind of weak approximate innerness assumption and one other technical condition, we prove that if the action has the the tracial Rokhlin property and the crossed product has tracial rank zero, then the original algebra has tracial rank zero. We give examples showing how the tracial Rokhlin property differs from the Rokhlin property of Iz…
We study the space of irreducible representations of a crossed product C*-algebra AxG, where G is a finite group. We construct a space $Γ$ which consists of pairs of irreducible representations of A and irreducible projective representations of subgroups of G. We show that there is a natural action of G on $Γ$ and that the orbit space G \ $Γ$ corresponds bijectively to the dual of AxG.
We introduce the tracial Rokhlin property for automorphisms of stably finite simple unital C*-algebras containing enough projections. This property is formally weaker than the various Rokhlin properties considered by Herman and Ocneanu, Kishimoto, and Izumi. Our main results are as follows. Consider a stably finite simple unital C*-algebra, and an automorphism of it which has the tracial Rokhlin property. Suppose the algebra has real rank zero and stable rank one, and suppose that the order on projections over the algebra is determined by traces. Then the crossed product by the automorphism al…
We study C*-algebra endomorphims which are special in a weaker sense w.r.t. the notion introduced by Doplicher and Roberts. We assign to such endomorphisms a geometrical invariant, representing a cohomological obstruction for them to be special in the usual sense. Moreover, we construct the crossed product of a C*-algebra by the action of the dual of a (nonabelian, noncompact) group of vector bundle automorphisms. These crossed products supply a class of examples for such generalized special endomorphisms.
We introduce the tracial quasi-Rokhlin property for an automorphism alpha of a unital C*-algebra A, which is not assumed to be simple. We show that under suitable hypotheses, the associated crossed product C*-algebra C*(Z,A,alpha) is simple, and there is a bijection between the space of tracial states on C*(Z,A,alpha)$ and the alpha-invariant tracial states on A. We show that, for a minimal dynamical system (X,h) and a simple, separable, unital C*-algebra A, the automorphism beta which extends the action of h on C(X) has the tracial quasi-Rokhlin property, and hence that C*(Z,C(X,A),beta) has …
Let $A$ be a stably finite simple unital $C^*$-algebra and suppose $α$ is an action of a finite group $G$ with the tracial Rokhlin property. Suppose further $A$ has real rank zero and the order on projections over $A$ is determined by traces. Then the crossed product $C^*$-algebra $C^*(G,A, α)$ also has real rank zero and order on projections over $A$ is determined by traces. Moreover, if $A$ also has stable rank one, then $C^*(G,A, α)$ also has stable rank one.
For an action $α$ of a locally compact group $G$ on a dual operator space $X$ by w*-continuous completely isometric isomorphisms one can define two generally different notions of crossed products, namely the Fubini crossed product $X\rtimes_α^{F}G$ and the spatial crossed product $X\overline{\rtimes}_α G$. It is shown that $X\rtimes_α^{F}G=X\overline{\rtimes}_α G$ if and only if the dual comodule action $\widehatα$ of the group von Neumann algebra $L(G)$ on the Fubini crossed product of $X\rtimes_α^{F}G$ is non-degenerate. As an application, this yields an alternative proof of the result of Cr…
For a number of properties of C*-algebras, including real rank zero, stable rank one, pure infiniteness, residual hereditary infiniteness, the combination of pure infiniteness and the ideal property, the property of being an AT algebra with real rank zero, and stability under tensoring with a strongly selfabsorbing C*-algebra, we prove the following. Consider an arbitrary action of a second countable compact abelian group on a separable C*-algebra. Then the fixed point algebra under the action has the given property if and only if the crossed product has the same property.
In this partly expository paper we compare three different categories of C*-algebras in which crossed-product duality can be formulated, both for actions and for coactions of locally compact groups. In these categories, the isomorphisms correspond to C*-algebra isomorphisms, imprimitivity bimodules, and outer conjugacies, respectively. In each case, a variation of the fixed-point functor that arises from classical Landstad duality is used to obtain a quasi-inverse for a crossed-product functor. To compare the various cases, we describe in a formal way our view of the fixed-point functor as an …
For an action of a finite group on a C*-algebra, we present some conditions under which properties of the C*-algebra pass to the crossed product or the fixed point algebra. We mostly consider the ideal property, the projection property, topological dimension zero, and pure infiniteness. In many of our results, additional conditions are necessary on the group, the algebra, or the action. Sometimes the action must be strongly pointwise outer, and in a few results it must have the Rokhlin property. When the group is finite abelian, we prove that crossed products and fixed point algebras preserve …
Let $A$ be a simple, exact, separable, unital $C^*$-algebra and let $α\colon G \rightarrow Aut(A)$ be an action of a finite group $G$ with the weak tracial Rokhlin property. We show that every trace on $A \rtimes_α G$ is quasidiagonal provided that all traces on $A$ are quasidiagonal. As an application, we study the behavior of finite decomposition rank under taking crossed products by finite group actions with the weak tracial Rokhlin property. Moreover, we discuss the stability of the property that all traces are quasidiagonal under taking crossed products of finite group actions with finite…
In this paper we introduce an analog of the tracial Rokhlin property, called the {\emph {projection free tracial Rokhlin property}}, for $C^*$-algebras which may not have any nontrivial projections. Using this we show that if $A$ is an infinite dimensional stably finite simple unital $C^*$-algebra with stable rank one, with strict comparison of positive elements, with only finitely many extreme tracial states, and with the property that every 2-quasi-trace is a trace, and if $α$ is an action of a finite group $G$ with the projection free tracial Rokhlin property, then the crossed product $C^*(…
We define spectral freeness for actions of discrete groups on C*-algebras. We relate spectral freeness to other freeness conditions; an example result is that for an action of a finite group, spectral freeness is equivalent to strong pointwise outerness, and also to the condition that the strong Connes spectrum of the action of the integers generated by a nontrivial group element is always nontrivial. We then prove permanence results for reduced crossed products by exact spectrally free actions, for crossed products by arbitrary actions of the two element group, and for extensions, direct limi…
We prove that a number of classes of separable unital C*-algebras are closed under crossed products by finite group actions with the Rokhlin property, including: (1) AI algebras, AT algebras, and related classes characterized by direct limit decompositions using semiprojective building blocks. (2) Simple unital AH algebras with slow dimension growth and real rank zero. (3) C*-algebras with real rank zero or stable rank one. (4) C*-algebras whose quotients all satisfy the Universal Coefficient Theorem. Along the way, we give a systematic treatment of the derivation of direct limit decomposition…
Let $G$ be a discrete group acting on a unital $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{A}$ by $*$-automorphisms. In this note, we show that the inclusion $\mathcal{A} \subseteq \mathcal{A} \rtimes_r G$ has the pure extension property (so that every pure state on $\mathcal{A}$ extends uniquely to a pure state on $\mathcal{A} \rtimes_r G$) if and only if $G$ acts freely on $\mathcal{\widehat{A}}$, the spectrum of $\mathcal{A}$. The same characterization holds for the inclusion $\mathcal{A} \subseteq \mathcal{A} \rtimes G$. This generalizes what was already known for $\mathcal{A}$ abelian.
For partial automorphisms of $C^*$-algebras, Takai-Takesaki crossed product duality tends to fail, in proportion to the extent to which the partial automorphism is not an automorphism.
We prove that a locally compact group has the approximation property (AP), introduced by Haagerup-Kraus, if and only if a non-commutative Fejér theorem holds for the associated $C^*$- or von Neumann crossed products. As applications, we answer three open problems in the literature. Specifically, we show that any locally compact group with the AP is exact. This generalizes a result by Haagerup-Kraus, and answers a problem raised by Li. We also answer a question of Bédos-Conti on the Fejér property of discrete $C^*$-dynamical systems, as well as a question by Anoussis-Katavolos-Todorov for all l…
A crossed product functor is said to be injective if it takes injective morphisms to injective morphisms. In this paper we show that every locally compact group $G$ admits a maximal injective crossed product $A\mapsto A\rtimes_{\inj}G$. Moreover, we give an explicit construction of this functor that depends only on the maximal crossed product and the existence of $G$-injective $C^*$-algebras; this is a sort of a `dual' result to the construction of the minimal exact crossed product functor, the latter having been studied for its relationship to the Baum-Connes conjecture. It turns out that $\r…
The aim of this paper is to study a problem raised by N. C. Phillips concerning the existence of Takai duality for $L^p$ operator crossed products $F^{p}(G,A,α)$, where $G$ is a locally compact Abelian group, $A$ is an $L^{p}$ operator algebra and $α$ is an isometric action of $G$ on $A$. Inspired by D. Williams' proof for the Takai duality theorem for crossed products of $C^*$-algebras, we construct a homomorphism $Φ$ from $F^{p}(\hat{G},F^p(G,A,α),\hatα)$ to $\mathcal{K}(l^{p}(G))\otimes_{p}A$ which is a natural $L^p$-analog of D. Williams' map. For countable discrete Abelian groups $G$ and …
Tracial Rokhlin property was introduced by Phillips to prove various structure theorems for crossed product. But it is defined for actions on simple C*-algebras only. This paper consists of two major parts: In section 2 and 3, we study the permanence properties and give a complete classification of tracial Rokhlin property for product-type actions; In section 4 and 5, we introduce the weak tracial Rokhlin property for actions on non-simple C*-algebras. We prove that when the action has the weak tracial Rokhlin property and the crossed product is simple, the properties on $A$ of having tracial …
We prove a generalized version of Powers' averaging property that characterizes simplicity of reduced crossed products $C(X) \rtimes_λG$, where $G$ is a countable discrete group, and $X$ is a compact Hausdorff space which $G$ acts on minimally by homeomorphisms. As a consequence, we generalize results of Hartman and Kalantar on unique stationarity to the state space of $C(X) \rtimes_λG$ and to Kawabe's generalized space of amenable subgroups $\operatorname{Sub}_a(X,G)$. This further lets us generalize a result of the first named author and Kalantar on simplicity of intermediate C*-algebras. We…
We decompose the crossed product functor for actions of crossed modules of locally compact groups on C*-algebras into more elementary constructions: taking crossed products by group actions and fibres in C*-algebras over topological spaces. For this, we extend the theory of partial crossed products from groups to crossed modules; extend Takesaki-Takai duality to Abelian crossed modules; show that equivalent crossed modules have equivalent categories of actions on C*-algebras; and show that certain crossed modules are automatically equivalent to Abelian crossed modules.
In this article we study analogues of the weak expectation property of discrete group C*-algebras and their crossed products, in the discrete quantum group setting, i.e., discrete quantum group C*-algebras and crossed products of C*-algebras with amenable discrete quantum groups.
Mansfield showed how to induce representations of crossed products of C*-algebras by coactions from crossed products by quotient groups and proved an imprimitivity theorem characterising these induced representations. We give an alternative construction of his bimodule in the case of dual coactions, based on the symmetric imprimitivity theorem of the third author; this provides a more workable way of inducing representations of crossed products of C*-algebras by dual coactions. The construction works for homogeneous spaces as well as quotient groups, and we prove an imprimitivity theorem for t…
We show that for a locally compact group G there is a one-to-one correspondence between G-invariant weak*-closed subspaces E of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra B(G) containing B_r(G) and quotients C*_E(G) of C*(G) which are intermediate between C*(G) and the reduced group algebra C*_r(G). We show that the canonical comultiplication on C*(G) descends to a coaction or a comultiplication on C*_E(G) if and only if E is an ideal or subalgebra, respectively. When αis an action of G on a C*-algebra B, we define "E-crossed products" B\rtimes_{α,E} G lying between the full crossed product and the reduced…
We construct the crossed product of a C(X)-algebra by an endomorphism, in such a way that it becomes induced by a Hilbert C(X)-bimodule. Furthermore we introduce the notion of C(X)-category, and discuss relationships with crossed products and duality for compact groups.
We study compact group actions with finite Rokhlin dimension, particularly in relation to crossed products. For example, we characterize the duals of such actions, generalizing previous partial results for the Rokhlin property. As an application, we determine the ideal structure of their crossed products. Under the assumption of so-called commuting towers, we show that taking crossed products by such actions preserves a number of relevant classes of C*-algebras, including: $D$-absorbing C*-algebras, where $D$ is a strongly self-absorbing C*-algebra, stable C*-algebras, C*-algebras with finite …
We develop a theory of crossed products by "actions" of Hecke pairs $(G, Γ)$, motivated by applications in non-abelian $C^*$-duality. Our approach gives back the usual crossed product construction whenever $G / Γ$ is a group and retains many of the aspects of crossed products by groups. In this first of two articles we lay the $^*$-algebraic foundations of these crossed products by Hecke pairs and we explore their representation theory.
In this note, we will point out, as a corollary of Popa's rigidity theory, that the crossed product von Neumann algebras for Bernoulli shifts cannot have relative property T. This is an operator algebra analogue of the theorem shown by Neuhauser and Cherix-Martin-Valette for discrete groups. Our proof is different from that for groups.
We show that indecomposable weak Kac algebras are free over their Cartan subalgebras and prove a duality theorem for their actions. Using this result, for any biconnected weak Kac algebra we construct a minimal action on the hyperfinite II_1 factor. The corresponding crossed product inclusion of II_1 factors has depth 2 and an integer index. Its first relative commutant is, in general, non-trivial, so we derive some arithmetic properties of weak Kac algebras from considering reduced subfactors.
We investigate approximation properties for $C^*$-algebras and their crossed products by actions and coactions by locally compact groups. We show that Haagerup's approximation constant is preserved for crossed products by arbitrary amenable groups, and we show why this is not always true in the non-amenable case. We also examine similar questions for other forms of the approximation property.
We compute the K-theory for C*-algebras naturally associated with rings of integers in number fields. The main ingredient is a duality theorem for arbitrary global fields. It allows us to identify the crossed product arising from affine transformations on the finite adeles with the analogous crossed product algebra over the infinite adele space.
We show that the category A(G) of actions of a locally compact group G on C*-algebras (with equivariant nondegenerate *-homomorphisms into multiplier algebras) is equivalent, via a full-crossed-product functor, to a comma category of maximal coactions of G under the comultiplication (C*(G),delta_G); and also that A(G) is equivalent, via a reduced-crossed-product functor, to a comma category of normal coactions under the comultiplication. This extends classical Landstad duality to a category equivalence, and allows us to identify those C*-algebras which are isomorphic to crossed products by G a…
Using the strong relation between coactions of a discrete group G on C*-algebras and Fell bundles over G, we prove a new version of Mansfield's imprimitivity theorem for coactions of discrete groups. Our imprimitivity theorem works for the universally defined full crossed products and arbitrary subgroups of G, as opposed to the usual theory which uses the spatially defined reduced crossed products and normal subgroups of G. Moreover, our theorem factors through the usual one by passing to appropriate quotients. As applications we show that a Fell bundle over a discrete group is amenable in the…
Let $(\mathcal G, Σ)$ be an ordered abelian group with Haar measure $μ$, let $(\mathcal A, \mathcal G, α)$ be a dynamical system and let $\mathcal A\rtimes_α Σ$ be the associated semicrossed product. Using Takai duality we establish a stable isomorphism \[ \mathcal A\rtimes_α Σ\sim_{s} \big(\mathcal A \otimes \mathcal K(\mathcal G, Σ, μ)\big)\rtimes_{α\otimes {\rm Ad}\: ρ} \mathcal G, \] where $\mathcal K(\mathcal G, Σ, μ)$ denotes the compact operators in the CSL algebra ${\rm Alg}\:\mathcal L(\mathcal G, Σ, μ)$ and $ρ$ denotes the right regular representation of $\mathcal G$. We also show th…
In this paper we define a Rokhlin property for automorphisms of non-unital C*-algebras and for endomorphisms. We show that the crossed product of a C*-algebra by a Rokhlin automorphism preserves absorption of a strongly self-absorbing C*-algebra, and use this result to deduce that the same result holds for crossed products by endomorphisms in the sense of Stacey. This generalizes earlier results of the second named author and W. Winter.
We present a systematic study of the structure of crossed products and fixed point algebras by compact group actions with the Rokhlin property on not necessarily unital C*-algebras. Our main technical result is the existence of an approximate homomorphism from the algebra to its subalgebra of fixed points, which is a left inverse for the canonical inclusion. Upon combining this with results regarding local approximations, we show that a number of classes characterized by inductive limit decompositions with weakly semiprojective building blocks, are closed under formation of crossed products by…
A continuous family of non-outer conjugate aperiodic automorphisms whose crossed-products are all isomorphic is given on every interpolated free group factor. An explicit "duality" relationship between compact co-commutative Kac algebra (minimal) free product actions and free shift actions is also discussed.
Let $M$ be a finite von Neumann algebra with the Haagerup property, and let $G$ be a compact group that acts continuously on $M$ and that preserves some finite trace $τ$. We prove that if $Γ$ is a countable subgroup of $G$ which has the Haagerup property, then the crossed product algebra $M\rtimesΓ$ has also the Haagerup property. In particular, we study some ergodic, non-weakly mixing actions of groups with the Haagerup property on finite, injective von Neumann algebras, and we prove that the associated crossed products von Neumann algebras are $\textrm{II}_1$-factors with the Haagerup proper…
We show that if $(X.A)$ and $(Y,B)$ are two isomorphic Hilbert pro-$C^{\ast} $-bimodules, then the crossed product $A\times_{X}\mathbb{Z}$ of $A$ by $X$ and the crossed product $B\times_{Y}\mathbb{Z}$ of $B$ by $Y$ are isomorphic as pro-$C^{\ast}$-algebras. We also prove a property of "associativity" between " $\otimes_{\min}$" and "$\times_{X}$" $\ $as well as " $\otimes_{\max}$" and "$\times_{X}$". As an application of these results we show that the crossed product of a nuclear pro-$C^{\ast}$ -algebra $A$ by a full Hilbert pro-$C^{\ast}$-bimodule $X$ is a nuclear pro-$C^{\ast}$-algebra.
In this second article on crossed products by "actions" of Hecke pairs we study their different C*-completions, namely we show how reduced and full C*-crossed products can be defined. We also establish that our construction coincides with that of Laca, Larsen and Neshveyev whenever they are both definable. As an application of our theory, we prove a Stone-von Neumann theorem for Hecke pairs which encompasses the work of an Huef, Kaliszewski and Raeburn and we lay down the foundations for obtaining a form of Katayama duality with respect to the Echterhoff-Quigg crossed product.
We consider reduced crossed products of twisted C*-dynamical systems over C*-simple groups. We prove there is a bijective correspondence between maximal ideals of the reduced crossed product and maximal invariant ideals of the underlying C*-algebra, and a bijective correspondence between tracial states on the reduced crossed product and invariant tracial states on the underlying C*-algebra. In particular, the reduced crossed product is simple if and only if the underlying C*-algebra has no proper non-trivial invariant ideals, and the reduced crossed product has a unique tracial state if and on…
Given a $C^*$-dynamical system $(A,G,α)$, with $G$ a discrete group, Schur $A$-multipliers and Herz--Schur $(A,G,α)$-multipliers are used to implement approximation properties, namely exactness and the strong operator approximation property (SOAP), of $A \rtimes_{α, r} G$. The resulting characterisations of exactness and SOAP of $A \rtimes_{α, r} G$ generalise the corresponding statements for the reduced group $C^*$-algebra.
This paper is motivated primarily by the question of when the maximal and reduced crossed products of a $G$-$C^*$-algebra agree (particularly inspired by results of Matsumura and Suzuki), and the relationships with various notions of amenability and injectivity. We give new connections between these notions. Key tools in this include the natural equivariant analogues of injectivity, and of Lance's weak expectation property: we also give complete characterizations of these equivariant properties, and some connections with injective envelopes in the sense of Hamana.
We study the ideal structure of reduced crossed product of topological dynamical systems of a countable discrete group. More concretely, for a compact Hausdorff space $X$ with an action of a countable discrete group $Γ$, we consider the absence of a non-zero ideals in the reduced crossed product $C(X) \rtimes_r Γ$ which has a zero intersection with $C(X)$. We characterize this condition by a property for amenable subgroups of the stabilizer subgroups of $X$ in terms of the Chabauty space of $Γ$. This generalizes Kennedy's algebraic characterization of the simplicity for a reduced group $\mathr…
We present a number of findings concerning groupoid dynamical systems and groupoid crossed products. The primary result is an identification of the spectrum of the groupoid crossed product when the groupoid has continuously varying abelian stabilizers and a well behaved orbit space. In this case, the spectrum of the crossed product is homeomorphic, via an induction map, to a quotient of the spectrum of the crossed product by the stabilizer group bundle. The main theorem is also generalized in the groupoid algebra case to an identification of the primitive ideal space. This generalization repla…
The crossed products of locally C*-algebras are defined and a Takai duality theorem for inverse limit actions of a locally compact group on a locally C*-algebra is proved.
Given a C*-dynamical system (A,G,α), we say that A is a weakly proper (X\rtimes G)-algebra if there exists a proper G-space X together with a nondegenerate G-equivariant *-homomorphism ϕ:C_0(X)->M(A). Weakly proper G-algebras form a large subclass of the class of proper G-algebras in the sense of Rieffel. In this paper we show that weakly proper (X\rtimes G)-algebras allow the construction of full fixed-point algebras A^G corresponding to the full crossed product A\rtimes_αG, thus solving, in this setting, a problem stated by Rieffel in his 1988's original article on proper actions. As an appl…
