In this note, we will point out, as a corollary of Popa's rigidity theory, that the crossed product von Neumann algebras for Bernoulli shifts cannot have relative property T. This is an operator algebra analogue of the theorem shown by Neuhauser and Cherix-Martin-Valette for discrete groups. Our proof is different from that for groups.
We study a relationship between the ultraproduct of a crossed product von Neumann algebra and the crossed product of an ultraproduct von Neumann algebra. As an application, the continuous core of an ultraproduct von Neumann algebra is described.
We consider the tracial crossed product algebra $M=A\rtimesΛ$ arising from a trace preserving action $σ:Λ\curvearrowright A$ of a discrete group $Λ$ on a tracial von Neumann algebra $A$. For a unitary subgroup $\mathcal{G}\subset \mathcal{U}(M)$, we study when this $\mathcal{G}$ can be conjugated into $\mathcal{U}(A)\cdotΛ$ in $M$. We provide a general sufficient condition for this to happen. Our result generalizes a result of Ioana, Popa and Vaes, which treats the case when $M$ is the group von Neumann algebra $L(Λ)$.
Let $G$ be a discrete group acting on a von Neumann algebra $M$ by properly outer $*$-automorphisms. In this paper we study the containment $M \subseteq M\rtimes_αG$ of $M$ inside the crossed product. We characterize the intermediate von Neumann algebras, extending earlier work of other authors in the factor case. We also determine the $M$-bimodules that are closed in the Bures topology and which coincide with the $w^*$-closed ones under a mild hypothesis on $G$. We use these results to obtain a general version of Mercer's theorem concerning the extension of certain isometric $w^*$-continuous …
We prove that the free product pair of any finitely many copies of the unique amenable type III$_1$ factor endowed with weakly mixing states remembers the number of free components and the given states.
We consider crossed product von Neumann algebras arising from free Bogoljubov actions of the integers. We describe several presentations of them as amalgamated free products and cocycle crossed products and give a criterion for factoriality. A number of isomorphism results for free Bogoljubov crossed products are proved, focusing on those arising from almost periodic representations. We complement our isomorphism results by rigidity results yielding non-isomorphic free Bogoljubov crossed products and by a partial characterisation of strong solidity of a free Bogoljubov crossed products in term…
We obtain new Bass-Serre type rigidity results for ${\rm II_1}$ equivalence relations and their von Neumann algebras, coming from free ergodic actions of free products of groups on the standard probability space. As an application, we show that any non-amenable factor arising as an amalgamated free product of von Neumann algebras $\mathcal{M}_1 \ast_B \mathcal{M}_2$ over an abelian von Neumann algebra $B$, is prime, i.e. cannot be written as a tensor product of diffuse factors. This gives, both in the type ${\rm II_1}$ and in the type ${\rm III}$ case, new examples of prime factors.
Let $I$ be any nonempty set and $(M_i, φ_i)_{i \in I}$ any family of nonamenable factors, endowed with arbitrary faithful normal states, that belong to a large class $\mathcal C_{\rm anti-free}$ of (possibly type III) von Neumann algebras including all nonprime factors, all nonfull factors and all factors possessing a Cartan subalgebra. For the free product $(M, φ) = \ast_{i \in I} (M_i, φ_i)$, we show that the free product von Neumann algebra $M$ retains the cardinality $|I|$ and each nonamenable factor $M_i$ up to stably inner conjugacy, after permutation of the indices. Our main theorem uni…
We introduce the notion of L^2-rigidity for von Neumann algebras, a generalization of property (T) which can be viewed as an analogue for the vanishing of 1-cohomology into the left regular representation of a group. We show that L^2-rigidity passes to normalizers and is satisfied by nonamenable II_1 factors which are non-prime, have property $Γ$, or are weakly rigid. As a consequence we obtain that if $M$ is a free product of diffuse von Neumann algebras, or if $M = LΓ$ where $Γ$ is a finitely generated group with $b_1^{(2)}(Γ) > 0$, then any nonamenable regular subfactor of $M$ is prime and …
Actions of locally compact groups and quantum groups on W*-ternary rings of operators are discussed and related crossed products introduced. The results generalise those for von Neumann algebraic actions with proofs based mostly on passing to the linking von Neumann algebra. They are motivated by the study of fixed point spaces for convolution operators generated by contractive, non-necessarily positive measures, both in the classical and in the quantum context.
We provide a fairly large family of amalgamated free product groups $Γ=Γ_1\ast_ΣΓ_2$ whose amalgam structure can be completely recognized from their von Neumann algebras. Specifically, assume that $Γ_i$ is a product of two icc non-amenable bi-exact (e.g., hyperbolic) groups, and $Σ$ is icc amenable and has trivial one-sided commensurator in $Γ_i$, for every $i\in\{1,2\}$. Then $Γ$ satisfies the following rigidity property: any group $\La$ such that $L(\La)$ is isomorphic to $L(\G)$ admits an amalgamated free product decomposition $\La=\La_1\ast_Δ\La_2$ such that the inclusions $L(Δ)\subseteq L…
We prove the first rigidity and classification theorems for crossed product von Neumann algebras given by actions of non-discrete, locally compact groups. We prove that for arbitrary free probability measure preserving actions of connected simple Lie groups of real rank one, the crossed product has a unique Cartan subalgebra up to unitary conjugacy. We then deduce a W* strong rigidity theorem for irreducible actions of products of such groups. More generally, our results hold for products of locally compact groups that are nonamenable, weakly amenable and that belong to Ozawa's class S.
Motivated by Popa's seminal work \cite{Po04}, in this paper, we provide a fairly large class of examples of group actions $Γ\curvearrowright X$ satisfying the extended Neshveyev-Størmer rigidity phenomenon \cite{NS03}: whenever $Λ\curvearrowright Y$ is a free ergodic pmp action and there is a $\ast$-isomorphism $Θ:L^\infty(X)\rtimes Γ\rightarrow L^\infty(Y)\rtimes Λ$ such that $Θ(L(Γ))=L(Λ)$ then the actions $Γ\curvearrowright X$ and $Λ\curvearrowright Y$ are conjugate (in a way compatible with $Θ$). We also obtain a complete description of the intermediate subalgebras of all (possibly non-fre…
For $\MvN$ a separable, purely infinite von Neumann algebra with almost periodic weight $ϕ$, a decomposition of $\MvN$ as a crossed product of a semifinite von Neumann algebra by a trace--scaling action of a countable abelian group is given. Then Takasaki's continuous decomposition of the same algebra is related to the above discrete decomposition via Takesaki's notion of induced action, but here one induces up from a dense subgroup. The above results are used to give a model for the one--parameter trace--scaling action of $\Real_+$ on the injective II$_\infty$ factor. Finally, another model o…
Let BS(n_1,m_1) $\curvearrowright$ X_1 and BS(n_2,m_2) $\curvearrowright$ X_2 be two ergodic essentially free probability measure preserving actions of nonamenable Baumslag-Solitar groups whose canonical almost normal abelian subgroups act aperiodically. We prove that an isomorphism between the corresponding crossed product II_1 factors forces BS(n_1,m_1) $\cong$ BS(n_2,m_2) when |n_1| $\neq$ |m_1| and BS(n_1,m_1) $\cong$ BS(n_2,$\pm$m_2) when |n_1| = |m_1|. This improves an orbit equivalence rigidity result obtained by Houdayer and Raum.
Amenable actions of locally compact groups on von Neumann algebras are investigated by exploiting the natural module structure of the crossed product over the Fourier algebra of the acting group. The resulting characterisation of injectivity for crossed products generalises a result of Anantharaman-Delaroche on discrete groups. Amenable actions of locally compact groups on $C^*$-algebras are investigated in the same way, and amenability of the action is related to nuclearity of the corresponding crossed product. A survey is given to show that this notion of amenable action for $C^*$-algebras s…
We survey Sorin Popa's recent work on Bernoulli actions. The paper was written on the occasion of the Bourbaki seminar. Using very original methods from operator algebras, Sorin Popa has shown that the orbit structure of the Bernoulli action of a property (T) group, completely remembers the group and the action. This information is even essentially contained in the crossed product von Neumann algebra, yielding the first von Neumann strong rigidity theorem in the literature. The same methods allow Popa to obtain II_1 factors with prescribed countable fundamental group.
We use deformation-rigidity theory in von Neumann algebra framework to study probability measure preserving actions by wreath product groups. In particular, we single out large families of wreath products groups satisfying various type of orbit equivalence (OE) rigidity. For instance, we show that whenever $H$, $K$, $\G$, $\La$ are icc, property (T) groups such that $H\wr \G$ is measure equivalent to $K\wr \La$ then automatically $\G$ is measure equivalent to $\La$ and $H^{\G}$ is measure equivalent to $K^{\La}$. Rigidity results for von Neumann algebras arising from certain actions of such gr…
We survey some of the progress made recently in the classification of von Neumann algebras arising from countable groups and their measure preserving actions on probability spaces. We emphasize results which provide classes of (W$^*$-superrigid) actions that can be completely recovered from their von Neumann algebras and II$_1$ factors that have a unique Cartan subalgebra. We also present cocycle superrigidity theorems and some of their applications to orbit equivalence. Finally, we discuss several recent rigidity results for von Neumann algebras associated to groups.
In this talk, I will survey recent progress made on the classification of von Neumann algebras arising from countable groups and their actions on probability spaces. In particular, I will present the first results which provide classes of (superrigid) groups and actions that can be entirely reconstructed from their von Neumann algebras.
Let $G$ be a locally compact abelian group. By modifying a theorem of Pedersen, it follows that actions of $G$ on $C^*$-algebras $A$ and $B$ are outer conjugate if and only if there is an isomorphism of the crossed products that is equivariant for the dual actions and preserves the images of $A$ and $B$ in the multiplier algebras of the crossed products. The rigidity problem discussed in this paper deals with the necessity of the last condition concerning the images of $A$ and $B$. There is an alternative formulation of the problem: an action of the dual group $\hat G$ together with a suitably…
We say that a countable discrete group $Γ$ satisfies the invariant von Neumann subalgebras rigidity (ISR) property if every $Γ$- invariant von Neumann subalgebra $\mathcal{M}$ in $L(Γ)$ is of the form $L(Λ)$ for some normal subgroup $Λ\lhd Γ$. We show many ``negatively curved" groups, including all torsion free non-amenable hyperbolic groups and torsion free groups with positive first $L^2$-Betti number under a mild assumption, and certain finite direct product of them have this property. We also discuss whether the torsion-free assumption can be relaxed.
In this second article on crossed products by "actions" of Hecke pairs we study their different C*-completions, namely we show how reduced and full C*-crossed products can be defined. We also establish that our construction coincides with that of Laca, Larsen and Neshveyev whenever they are both definable. As an application of our theory, we prove a Stone-von Neumann theorem for Hecke pairs which encompasses the work of an Huef, Kaliszewski and Raeburn and we lay down the foundations for obtaining a form of Katayama duality with respect to the Echterhoff-Quigg crossed product.
In this article we study property (T) groups arising from Rips construction in geometric group theory in the spirit of \cite{CDK19} and certain inductive limit groups from this class. Using interplay between Popa's deformation/rigidity and methods in geometric group theory we are able to extend the class of groups considered in \cite{CDK19} that remembers semidirect product features while passing to the group von Neumann algebras. Combining these results with the method developed in \cite{CDHK20} we are able to produce more examples of property (T) group factors with trivial fundamental group.…
We will show a centrally free action of an amenable rigid C$^*$-tensor category on a properly infinite von Neumann algebra has the Rohlin property. This enables us to prove the fullness of the crossed product of a full factor by minimal action of a compact group. As another application of the Rohlin property, we will show the uniqueness of centrally free cocycle actions of an amenable rigid C$^*$-tensor category on properly infinite von Neumann algebras.
We give a survey of recent classification results for crossed product von Neumann algebras arising from measure preserving group actions on probability spaces. This includes II_1 factors with uncountable fundamental groups and the construction of W*-superrigid actions where the crossed product entirely remembers the initial group action that it was constructed from.
Let $M$ be a finite von Neumann algebra with the Haagerup property, and let $G$ be a compact group that acts continuously on $M$ and that preserves some finite trace $τ$. We prove that if $Γ$ is a countable subgroup of $G$ which has the Haagerup property, then the crossed product algebra $M\rtimesΓ$ has also the Haagerup property. In particular, we study some ergodic, non-weakly mixing actions of groups with the Haagerup property on finite, injective von Neumann algebras, and we prove that the associated crossed products von Neumann algebras are $\textrm{II}_1$-factors with the Haagerup proper…
Let X be an infinite, compact, metrizable space of finite covering dimension and h a minimal homeomorphism of X. We prove that the crossed product of C(X) by h absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra tensorially and has finite nuclear dimension. As a consequence, these algebras are determined up to isomorphism by their graded ordered K-theory under the necessary condition that their projections separate traces. This result applies, in particular, to those crossed products arising from uniquely ergodic homeomorphisms.
We introduce the notion of Zimmer amenability for actions of discrete quantum groups on von Neumann algebras. We prove generalizations of several fundamental results of the theory in the noncommutative case. In particular, we give a characterization of Zimmer amenability of an action $α:\Bbb G\curvearrowright N$ in terms of $\hat{\Bbb{G}}$-injectivity of the von Neumann algebra crossed product $N\ltimes_α\Bbb G$. As an application we show that the actions of any discrete quantum group on its Poisson boundaries are always amenable.
For any injective von Neumann algebra R and any discrete, countable group G, which acts by *-automorphisms on R, we construct an idempotent mapping of an ultra-weakly dense subspace of B(H) onto the reducerd crossed product von Neumann algebra, such that it is R-bimodular and satisfies some nice relations with respect to positivity. In the case of an amenable group our unbounded expectation turns into a usual conditional expectation of norm 1.
We show that if $Γ= Γ_1\times\dotsb\times Γ_n$ is a product of $n\geq 2$ non-elementary ICC hyperbolic groups then any discrete group $Λ$ which is $W^*$-equivalent to $Γ$ decomposes as a $k$-fold direct sum exactly when $k=n$. This gives a group-level strengthening of Ozawa and Popa's unique prime decomposition theorem by removing all assumptions on the group $Λ$. This result in combination with Margulis' normal subgroup theorem allows us to give examples of lattices in the same Lie group which do not generate stably equivalent II$_1$ factors.
We generalize a theorem of Chifan and Ioana by proving that for any, possibly type III, amenable von Neumann algebra $A_0$, any faithful normal state $φ_0$ and any discrete group $Γ$, the associated Bernoulli crossed product von Neumann algebra $M=(A_0,φ_0)^{\mathbin{\bar{\otimes}}Γ}\rtimes Γ$ is solid relatively to $\mathcal{L}(Γ)$. In particular, if $\mathcal{L}(Γ)$ is solid then $M$ is solid and if $Γ$ is non-amenable and $A_0 \neq \mathbb{C}$ then $M$ is a full prime factor. This gives many new examples of solid or prime type $\mathrm{III}$ factors. Following Chifan and Ioana, we also obta…
We study actions of locally compact groups on von Neumann factors and the associated crossed-product von Neumann algebras. In the setting of totally disconnected groups we provide sufficient conditions on an action $G\curvearrowright Q$ ensuring that the inclusion $Q \subset Q \rtimes G$ is irreducible and that every intermediate subfactor is of the form $Q \rtimes H$ for a closed subgroup $H<G$. This partially generalizes a result of Izumi-Longo-Popa [ILP98] and Choda [Ch78]. We moreover show that one can not hope to use their strategy for non-discrete groups.
In 2008, Blecher and Labuschagne extended Beurling's classical theorem to $H^\infty$-invariant subspaces of $L^p(\mathcal{M},τ)$ for a finite von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ with a finite, faithful, normal tracial state $τ$ when $1\le p\le \infty$. In this paper, using Arveson's non-commutative Hardy space $H^\infty$ in relation to a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ with a semifinite, faithful, normal tracial weight $τ$, we prove a Beurling-Blecher-Labuschagne theorem for $H^\infty$-invariant spaces of $L^p(\mathcal{M},τ)$ when $0<p\leq\infty$. The proof of the main result relies on proofs …
We prove that the notion of relative property (T) (or rigidity) for inclusions of finite von Neumann algebras defined in [Po1] is equivalent to a weaker property, in which no ``continuity constants'' are required. The proof is by contradiction and uses infinite products of completely positive maps, regarded as correspondences.
We provide a new large class of countable icc groups $\mathcal A$ for which the product rigidity result from [CdSS15] holds: if $Γ_1,\dots,Γ_n\in\mathcal A$ and $Λ$ is any group such that $L(Γ_1\times\dots\timesΓ_n)\cong L(Λ)$, then there exists a product decomposition $Λ=Λ_1\times\dots\times Λ_n$ such that $L(Λ_i)$ is stably isomorphic to $L(Γ_i)$, for any $1\leq i\leq n$. Class $\mathcal A$ consists of groups $Γ$ for which $L(Γ)$ admits an s-malleable deformation in the sense of Sorin Popa and it includes all non-amenable groups $Γ$ such that either (a) $Γ$ admits an unbounded 1-cocycle into…
We obtain several rigidity results regarding tensor product decompositions of factors. First, we show that any full factor with separable predual has at most countably many tensor product decompositions up to stable unitary conjugacy. We use this to show that the class of separable full factors with countable fundamental group is stable under tensor products. Next, we obtain new primeness and unique prime factorization results for crossed products coming from compact actions of higher rank lattices (e.g.\ $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{Z}), \: n \geq 3$) and noncommutative Bernoulli shifts with arbitr…
For a locally compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$, consider the convolution action of a quantum probability measure $μ$ on $L_\infty(\mathbb{G})$. As shown by Junge--Neufang--Ruan, this action has a natural extension to a Markov map on $\mathcal{B}(L_2(\mathbb{G}))$. We prove that the Poisson boundary of the latter can be realized concretely as the von Neumann crossed product of the Poisson boundary associated with $μ$ under the action of $\mathbb{G}$ induced by the coproduct. This yields an affirmative answer, for general locally compact quantum groups, to a problem raised by Izumi (2004) in t…
Roe algebras are C*-algebras built using large-scale (or 'coarse') aspects of a metric space (X,d). In the special case that X=G is a finitely generated group and d is a word metric, the simplest Roe algebra associated to (G,d) is isomorphic to the reduced crossed product C*-algebra l^\infty(G)\rtimes G. Roe algebras are 'coarse invariants', in the sense that if X and Y are coarsely equivalent metric spaces, then their Roe algebras are isomorphic. Motivated in part by the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture, we ask if there is a converse to the above statement: that is, if X and Y are metric spaces …
Recently, Adrian Ioana proved that all crossed products by free ergodic probability measure preserving actions of a nontrivial free product group Γ_1 * Γ_2 have a unique Cartan subalgebra up to unitary conjugacy. Ioana deduced this result from a more general dichotomy theorem on the normalizer N_M(A)'' of an amenable subalgebra A of an amalgamated free product von Neumann algebra M = M_1 *_B M_2. We improve this dichotomy theorem by removing the spectral gap assumptions and obtain in particular a simpler proof for the uniqueness of the Cartan subalgebra in crossed products by Γ_1 * Γ_2.
For an action $α$ of a locally compact group $G$ on a dual operator space $X$ by w*-continuous completely isometric isomorphisms one can define two generally different notions of crossed products, namely the Fubini crossed product $X\rtimes_α^{F}G$ and the spatial crossed product $X\overline{\rtimes}_α G$. It is shown that $X\rtimes_α^{F}G=X\overline{\rtimes}_α G$ if and only if the dual comodule action $\widehatα$ of the group von Neumann algebra $L(G)$ on the Fubini crossed product of $X\rtimes_α^{F}G$ is non-degenerate. As an application, this yields an alternative proof of the result of Cr…
Let $ G $ be a locally compact group. We study the categories of $ L^{\infty}(G) $-comodules and $ L(G) $-comodules in the setting of dual operator spaces and the associated crossed products. It is proved that every $ L^{\infty}(G) $-comodule is non-degenerate and saturated, whereas every $ L(G) $-comodule is non-degenerate if and only if every $ L(G) $-comodule is saturated if and only if $ G $ has the approximation property in the sense of Haagerup and Kraus [14]. This allows us to extend known results from the duality theory of crossed products of von Neumann algebras (such as Takesaki-dual…
