Dynamical parametric encirclement around an Exceptional Point (EP) and corresponding asymmetric state transfer phenomenon have attracted considerable attention recently. In this context, beyond the reported time-asymmetric state dynamics around a second-order EP (EP2) in a two-level system, the investigation of similar state dynamics around a third-order EP (EP3) in a multi-state system, having comparably complex topology with rich physics, is lacking. Here, we report a fabrication-feasible few-mode planar optical waveguide with a customized gain-loss profile and investigate the effect of dynamical parametric encirclement around an EP3 in the presence of multiple EP2s. The cube-root branch point behavior is established in terms of successive switching between the propagation constants of the coupled modes following an adiabatic encirclement process. Now, while considering the dynamical encirclement process, the breakdown in system adiabaticity around an EP3 leads to a unique light dynamics, where we have shown the breakdown of chirality of the device.
We report a planar 1D photonic bandgap waveguide exhibiting four second-order exceptional points (EP2s). The interactions between the selective pairs of supported quasi-guided TE modes are modulated by spatial distribution of transverse in-homogeneous gain-loss profile.
We explore exceptional points (EP) in a dual-mode symmetric planar optical waveguide with transverse variation of inhomogeneous loss profile; where modal evolution alongside an EP is reported in the context of selective optical mode conversion.
We uncover the existence of Dirac and exceptional points in waveguides made of anisotropic materials, and study the transition between them. Dirac points in the dispersion diagram appear at propagation directions where the matrix describing the eigenvalue problem for bound states splits into two blocks, sorting the eigenmodes either by polarization or by inner mode symmetry. Introducing a non-Hermitian channel via a suitable leakage mechanism causes the Dirac points to transform into exceptional points connected by a Fermi arc. The exceptional points arise as improper hybrid leaky states and, …
We demonstrate theoretically the electric tunability due to coalescence of exceptional points in PT-symmetric waveguides bounded by imperfect conductive layers. Owing to the competition effect of multimode interaction, multiple exceptional points and PT phase transitions could be attained in such a simple system and their occurrences are strongly dependent on the boundary conductive layers. When the conductive layers become very thin, it is found that the oblique transmittance and reflectance of the same system can be tuned between zero and one by a small change in carrier density. The results…
We report a 1D planar optical waveguide with transverse distribution of inhomogeneous loss profile, which exhibits an exceptional point (EP). The waveguide hosts two leaky resonant modes; where the interaction between them in the vicinity of the EP is controlled by proper adjustment of the inhomogeneity in attenuation profile only. We study the adiabatic dynamics of propagation constants of the coupled modes by quasi-static encirclement of control parameters around the EP. Realizing such an encirclement with the inhomogeneous loss distribution along the direction of light propagation, we repor…
We investigate the astonishing physical aspects of Exceptional Points (EPs) in a 1D planar few-mode optical waveguide. The waveguide hosts four quasi-guided modes. Here interactions between the selected pair of modes are modulated by a spatial distribution of inhomogeneous gain-loss profile. Both the coupled pairs approach two different second-order EPs in parameter plane. Considering a proper parametric loop to encircle the identified EPs simultaneously, we establish a specific topological feature where one round encirclement in parameter space yields the switching between the propagation con…
We investigate the exceptional points (EPs) in a non-Hermitian system composed of a pair of graphene sheets with different losses. There are two surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) modes in the graphene waveguide. By varying the distance between two graphene sheets and chemical potential of graphene, the EPs appear as the eigenvalues, that is, the wave vectors of the two modes coalesce. The cross conversion of eigenmodes and variation of geometric phase can be observed by encircling the EP in the parametric space formed by the geometric parameters and chemical potential of graphene. At the same t…
Bound states in the continuum (BICs) and exceptional points (EPs) have been the subjects of recent intensive research as they exhibit exotic phenomena that are significant for both fundamental physics and practical applications. We investigated the emergence of the Friedrich-Wintgen (FW) type BIC and the EP in a dielectric waveguide comprising a metal grating, focusing on their dependence on the grating thickness. The BIC emerges at a branch near the anti-crossing formed of the two waveguide modes, for a grating of any thickness. With the grating-thickness change, the anti-crossing gap varies …
We present a transmission line theory of exceptional points of degeneracy (EPD) in coupled-mode guiding structures, i.e., a theory that illustrates the characteristics of coupled electromagnetic modes under a special dispersion degeneracy condition, yet unexplored in the contest of gain and loss. We demonstrate the concept of Parity-Time ($\cal{PT}$)-symmetry in coupled uniform waveguides with balanced and symmetric gain and loss and how this condition is associated with a second order EPD. We show that by introducing gain into naturally lossy structures provides for the conditions whereby exc…
We present a novel approach and a theoretical framework for generating high order exceptional points of degeneracy (EPD) in photonic structures based on periodic coupled resonators optical waveguides (CROWs). Such EPDs involve the coalescence of Floquet-Bloch eigenwaves in CROWs, without the presence of gain and loss, which is in contrast to the requirement of Parity-Time (PT) symmetry to develop exceptional points based on gain and loss balance. The EPDs arise here by introducing symmetry breaking in a conventional chain of coupled resonators through coupling the chain of resonators to an adj…
We present a nanoscale active plasmonic waveguide system consisting of an array of periodic slits that can exhibit exceptional points and spectral singularities leading to several novel functionalities. The proposed symmetric active system operates near its cut-off wavelength and behaves as an effective epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) medium. We demonstrate the formation of an exceptional point (EP) that is accessed with very low gain coefficient values, a unique feature of the proposed nanoscale symmetric plasmonic configuration. Reflectionless ENZ transmission and perfect loss-compensation are reali…
The dispersion of a three-way waveguide is engineered to exhibit exceptional modal characteristics. Two coupled waveguides with Parity-Time (PT) symmetry have been previously demonstrated to exhibit second order exceptional points of degeneracy (EPDs). In this work, we introduce and investigate a particular class of EPDs, applicable from radio frequency to optical wavelengths, whereby three coupled waveguides satisfy Glide-Time (GT) symmetry to exhibit a third order modal degeneracy with a real-valued wavenumber. GT symmetry involves glide symmetry of lossless/gainless components of the wavegu…
The dynamical encirclement around a second order exceptional point (EP) and corresponding chirality driven nonadiabatic modal dynamics have attracted enormous attention in the topological study of various non-Hermitian systems. However, dynamical encirclement around multiple second-order EPs in a multi-state system is yet to be explored. Here, exploiting an exclusive design of a planar gain-loss assisted three-mode supported optical waveguide with local Kerr-nonlinearity, we encounter multiple second-order EPs. Judiciously, choosing a specific parameter space by varying the unbalanced gain-los…
A planar waveguide with impedance boundary, composed of non-perfect metallic plates, and with passive or active dielectric filling is considered. We show the possibility of selective mode guiding and amplification when homogeneous pump is added to the dielectric, and analyze differences in TE and TM mode propagation. Such a non-conservative system is also shown to feature exceptional points, for specific and experimentally tunable parameters, which are described for a particular case of transparent dielectric.
Almost twenty years ago the light was slowed down to less than $10^{-7}$ of its vacuum speed in a cloud of ultracold atoms of sodium. Upon a sudden turn-off of the coupling laser, a slow light pulse can be imprinted on cold atoms such that it can be read out and converted into photon again. In this process, the light is stopped by absorbing it and storing its shape within the atomic ensemble. Alternatively, the light can be stopped at the band edge in photonic-crystal waveguides, where the group speed vanishes. Here we extend the phenomenon of stopped light to the new field of parity-time (PT)…
Many novel properties of non-Hermitian systems are found at or near the exceptional points-branch points of complex energy surfaces at which eigenvalues and eigenvectors coalesce. In particular, higher-order exceptional points can result in optical structures that are ultrasensitive to external perturbations. Here we show that an arbitrary order exceptional point can be achieved in a simple system consisting of identical resonators placed near a waveguide. Unidirectional coupling between any two chiral dipolar states of the resonators mediated by the waveguide mode leads to the exceptional poi…
Physical systems with loss or gain feature resonant modes that are decaying or growing exponentially with time. Whenever two such modes coalesce both in their resonant frequency and their rate of decay or growth, a so-called "exceptional point" occurs, around which many fascinating phenomena have recently been reported to arise. Particularly intriguing behavior is predicted to appear when encircling an exceptional point sufficiently slowly, like a state-flip or the accumulation of a geometric phase. Experiments dedicated to this issue could already successfully explore the topological structur…
We demonstrate for the first time the occurrence of a sixth order exceptional point of degeneracy (EPD) in a realistic multimode optical photonic structure by using a modified periodic coupled resonators optical waveguide (CROW), at the optical wavelength ${λ_e} = 1550 nm$. The 6th order EPD is obtained in a CROW without the need of loss or gain and such an EPD corresponds to a very special band edge of the periodic photonic structure where six eigenmode coalesce, so we refer to it as the 6th order degenerate band edge (6DBE). Moreover, we report a new scaling law of the quality factor Q of an…
We reveal the existence of continuous families of guided single-mode solitons in planar waveguides with weakly nonlinear active core and absorbing boundaries. Stable propagation of TE and TM-polarized solitons is accompanied by attenuation of all other modes, i.e. the waveguide features properties of conservative and dissipative systems. If the linear spectrum of the waveguide possesses exceptional points, which occurs in the case of TM-polarization, an originally focusing (defocusing) material nonlinearity may become effectively defocusing (focusing). This occurs due to the geometric phase of…
The existence of a frozen mode in a periodic serpentine waveguide with broken longitudinal symmetry is demonstrated numerically. The frozen mode is associated with a stationary inflection point (SIP) of the Bloch dispersion relation, where three Bloch eigenmodes collapse on each other, as it is an exceptional point of order three. The frozen mode regime is characterized by vanishing group velocity and enhanced field amplitude, which can be very attractive in various applications including dispersion engineering, lasers, and delay lines. Useful and simple design equations that lead to realizati…
We consider a two-dimensional nonlinear waveguide with distributed gain and losses. The optical potential describing the system consists of an unperturbed complex potential depending only on one transverse coordinate, i.e., corresponding to a planar waveguide, and a small non-separable perturbation depending on both transverse coordinates. It is assumed that the spectrum of the unperturbed planar waveguide features an exceptional point (EP), while the perturbation drives the system into the unbroken phase. Slightly below the EP, the waveguide sustains two-component envelope solitons. We derive…
Over the past decade, parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$)-symmetric Hamiltonians have been experimentally realized in classical, optical settings with balanced gain and loss, or in quantum systems with localized loss. In both realizations, the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking transition occurs at the exceptional point of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, where its eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors both coincide. Here, we show that in lossy systems, the $\mathcal{PT}$ transition is a phenomenon that broadly occurs without an attendant exceptional point, and is driven by the potential asymmet…
We demonstrate that a periodic waveguide comprising of uniform lossless segments together with discrete gain and radiating elements supports exceptional points of degeneracy (EPDs). We provide analytical expressions for all possible conditions that guarantee the occurrence of an EPD, i.e., the coalescence of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. We show that EPDs are not only achieved using symmetric gain and radiation periodic loading, but they are also obtained using asymmetric gain and radiation loss conditions. We illustrate the characteristics of the degenerate electromagnetic modes, showing the …
We propose two non-Hermitian arrays consisting of $N=2l+1$ waveguides and exhibiting parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) or anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry for investigating light transfer dynamics based on $N$th-order exceptional points (EPs). The $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric array supports two $N$th-order EPs separating an unbroken and a broken phase with real and imaginary eignvalues, respectively. Light transfer dynamics in this array exhibits radically different behaviors, i.e. a unidirectional oscillation behavior in the unbroken phase, an edge-towards localization behavior in the broken phase, and a …
Dynamical encirclement of an Exceptional Point (EP) and corresponding time-asymmetric mode evolution properties due to breakdown in adiabatic theorem have been a key to range of exotic physical effects in various open atomic, molecular and optical systems. Here, exploiting a gain-loss assisted dual-mode optical waveguide that hosts a dynamical EP-encirclement scheme, we have explored enhanced nonreciprocal effect in the dynamics of light with onset of saturable nonlinearity in the optical medium. We propose a prototype waveguide-based isolation scheme with judicious tuning of nonlinearity leve…
Exceptional points (EPs) are degeneracies of non-Hermitian operators where, in addition to the eigenvalues, corresponding eigenmodes become degenerate. Classical and quantum photonic systems with EPs have attracted tremendous attention due to their unusual properties, topological features, and an enhanced sensitivity that depends on the order of the EP, i.e. the number of degenerate eigenmodes. Yet, experimentally engineering higher-order EPs in classical or quantum domains remains an open challenge due to the stringent symmetry constraints that are required for the coalescence of multiple eig…
Electromagnetic waves propagating, at finite speeds, in conventional wave-guiding structures are reflected by discontinuities and decay in lossy regions. In this Letter, we drastically modify this typical guided-wave behavior by combining concepts from non-Hermitian physics and topological photonics. To this aim, we theoretically study, for the first time, the possibility of realizing an exceptional point between \emph{coupled topological modes in a non-Hermitian non-reciprocal waveguide}. Our proposed system is composed of oppositely-biased gyrotropic materials (e.g., biased plasmas or graphe…
We demonstrate efficient generation of mid-infrared frequency combs based on continuous-wave-seeded femtosecond optical parametric generation in nonlinear waveguides. Conversion of the near-infrared pump to signal and idler light takes place with very high efficiency (74 %) and the threshold (25 pJ) is over 300 times lower than in bulk analogs. Relative intensity noise of the mid-infrared comb is exceptionally low, below 5*10-5 (detector-limited, integrated from 10 Hz to 2 MHz). Furthermore, the mid-infrared bandwidth can be increased by driving the process with broadband pump obtained via sup…
We construct localized beams that are located at the edge of a non-Hermitian Glauber Fock (NGF) lattice made of coupled waveguides and can propagate for a long distance without almost no diffraction. Specifically, we calculate the closed-form of the eigenstates at the exceptional point of a semi-infinite NGF lattice composed of waveguides which are coupled in a unidirectional manner. We use the closed-form solution to construct the non-diffracting beams in finite NGF lattices. We provide a numerical approach to find other lattices that are capable of supporting non-diffracting beams at an exce…
Exceptional points (EPs), i.e., non-Hermitian degeneracies at which eigenvalues and eigenvectors coalesce, can be realized by tuning the gain/loss contrast of different modes in non-Hermitian systems or by engineering the asymmetric coupling of modes. Here we demonstrate a mechanism that can achieve EPs of arbitrary order by employing the non-reciprocal coupling of spinning cylinders sitting on a dielectric waveguide. The spinning motion breaks the time-reversal symmetry and removes the degeneracy of opposite chiral modes of the cylinders. Under the excitation of a linearly polarized plane wav…
Exceptional points as branch singularities describe peculiar degeneracies of non-Hermitian systems that do not obey energy conservation. This work shows that exceptional points can emerge in a topological photonic system, for example, the topological photonic waveguide coupled with two degenerate counter-propagation topological whispering gallery modes. Such a photonic architecture is designed by crystal-symmetry-protected topological photonic insulators based on air rods in conventional dielectric materials. The relevant exceptional point reveals the breaking of the parity-time symmetry, refl…
Waves entering a spatially uniform lossy medium typically undergo exponential decay, arising from either the energy loss of the Beer-Lambert-Bouguer transmission law or the evanescent penetration during reflection. Recently, exceptional point singularities in non-Hermitian systems have been linked to unconventional wave propagation, such as the predicted extremely spatially broad constant-intensity guided modes. Despite such promises, the possibility of decay-free wave propagation in a purely lossy medium has been neither theoretically suggested nor experimentally realized until now. Here we d…
We show that the analogue of the geometric phase for non-Hermitian coupled waveguides with PT-symmetry and at least one periodically varying parameter can be purely imaginary, and will consequently result in the manifestation of an instability in the system. The instability peaks seen in the spectrum of the system's eigenstates after evolution along the waveguides can be directly mapped to the spectrum of the derivative of the geometric function. The instabilities are magnified as the exceptional point of the system is approached, and non-adiabatic effects begin to appear. As the system cannot…
Dynamically encircling an exceptional point (EP) in parity-time (PT) symmetric systems shows an interesting chiral dynamics, leading to asymmetric mode switching in which the output modes are different when the encircling direction is reversed. Here we show that the dynamical encircling of an EP in anti-PT-symmetric systems can also result in chiral dynamics if the starting/end point lies in the PT-broken phase, in contrast to PT-symmetric systems where chiral dynamics emerges if the starting/end point lies in the PT-unbroken phase. For many applications, such as signal processing using wavegu…
We study the spontaneous emission rate of a dipole emitter in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric environment of two coupled waveguides using the reciprocity approach generalized to non-orthogonal eigenmodes of non-Hermitian systems. Considering emission to the guided modes, we define and calculate the modal Purcell factor composed of contributions of independent and interfering non-orthogonal modes leading to the emergence of cross-mode terms in the Purcell factor. We reveal that the closed-form expression for the modal Purcell factor within the coupled mode theory slightly alters for the non-Hermitian …
We employ the intertwining operator technique to synthesize a supersymmetric (SUSY) array of arbitrary size $N$. The synthesized SUSY system is equivalent to a spin-$(N-1)/2$ under an effective magnetic field. By considering an additional imaginary magnetic field, we obtain a generalized parity-time-symmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonian that describes a SUSY array of coupled resonators or waveguides under a gradient gain and loss; all the $N$ energy levels coalesce at an exceptional point (EP), forming the isotropic high-order EP with $N$ states coalescence (EPN). Near the EPN, the scaling expon…
We experimentally observe an effective PT-phase transition through the exceptional point in a hybrid plasmonic-dielectric waveguide system. Transmission experiments reveal fundamental changes in the underlying Eigenmode interactions as the environmental refractive index is tuned, which can be unambiguously attributed to a crossing through the plasmonic exceptional point. These results extend the design opportunities for tuneable non-Hermitian physics to plasmonic systems.
Coupled-resonator optical waveguides (CROWs) are known to have interesting and useful dispersion properties. Here, we study the transport in these waveguides in the general case where each resonator is open and asymmetric, i.e., is leaky and possesses no mirror-reflection symmetry. Each individual resonator then exhibits asymmetric backscattering between clockwise and counterclockwise propagating waves, which in combination with the losses induces non-orthogonal eigenmodes. In a chain of such resonators, the coupling between the resonators induces an additional source of non-hermiticity, and a…
Exceptional points (EPs) are degeneracies in open wave systems with coalescence of at least two energy levels and their corresponding eigenstates. In higher dimensions, more complex EP physics not found in two-state systems is observed. We consider the emergence and interaction of multiple EPs in a four coupled optical waveguides system by non-Hermitian coupling showing a unique EP formation pattern in a phase diagram. In addition, absolute phase rigidities are computed to show the mixing of the different states in definite parameter regimes. Our results could be potentially important for deve…
By preparing a sensor system around isolated exceptional points, one can obtain a great enhancement of the sensitivity benefiting from the non-Hermiticity. However, this comes at the cost of reduction of the flexibility of the system, which is critical for practical applications. By generalizing the exceptional points to exceptional surfaces, it has been theoretically proposed recently that enhanced sensitivity and flexibility can be combined. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an exceptional surface in a non-Hermitian photonic sensing system, which is composed of a whispering-gallery-mode mi…
We propose a metallic-silicon system with a complex optical potential modulated along the length of the waveguide for a robust higher harmonic generation. For right moving fields when the strength of non-Hermiticity becomes equal to the real part of the optical potential, the dynamical equations associated with modal field amplitudes in our proposed system are described by a Jordan form Hamiltonian. This ultimately will allow for a unidirectional higher frequency generation which always has a maximum value for a specific length of the waveguide irrespective of the geometrical imperfections in …
Exceptional points (EPs) with a global collapse of pairs of eigenfunctions are shown to arise in two locally-coupled and spatially-extended optical structures with balanced gain and loss. Global collapse at the EP deeply changes light propagation, which becomes very sensitive to small changes of initial conditions or system parameters, similarly to what happens in models of classical or quantum catastrophes. The implications of global collapse for light behavior are illustrated by considering discrete beam diffraction and Bloch oscillation catastrophe in coupled waveguide lattices.
