We experimentally observe an effective PT-phase transition through the exceptional point in a hybrid plasmonic-dielectric waveguide system. Transmission experiments reveal fundamental changes in the underlying Eigenmode interactions as the environmental refractive index is tuned, which can be unambiguously attributed to a crossing through the plasmonic exceptional point. These results extend the design opportunities for tuneable non-Hermitian physics to plasmonic systems.
We consider periodic arrangements of metal nanostructures and study the effect of periodicity on the localised surface plasmon resonance of the structures within an electrostatic eigenmode approximation. We show that within this limit, the collective surface plasmon resonances of the periodic structures can be expressed in terms of superpositions of the eigenmodes of uncoupled nanostructures that exhibit a standing--wave character delocalised across the entire periodic structure. The formalism derived successfully enables the design and accounts for the observation of plasmonic edge-states in …
We introduce the concept of optical control of the fluorescence yield of CdSe quantum dots through plasmon-induced structural changes in random semicontinuous nanostructured gold films. We demonstrate that the wavelength- and polarization dependent coupling between quantum dots and the semicontinuous films, and thus the fluorescent emission spectrum, can be controlled and significantly increased through the optical extinction of a selective band of eigenmodes in the films. This optical method of effecting controlled changes in the metal nanostructure allows for versatile functionality in a sin…
We present measurements on plasmonic meta-molecules under local excitation using cathodoluminescence which show a spatial redistribution of the local density of optical states (LDOS) at the same frequency where a sharp spectral Fano-feature in the extinction cross section has been observed. Our analytical model shows that both near- and far-field effects arise due to interference of the same two eigenmodes of the system. We present quantitative insights both in a bare state, and in a dressed state picture that describe plasmonic Fano interference either as near-field amplitude transfer between…
We evaluate the sensing properties of plasmonic waveguide sensors by calculating their resonant transmission spectra in different regions of the non-Hermitian eigenmode space. We elucidate the pitfalls of using modal dispersion calculations in isolation to predict plasmonic sensor performance, which we address by using a simple model accounting for eigenmode excitation and propagation. Our transmission calculations show that resonant wavelength and spectral width crucially depend on the length of the sensing region, so that no single criterion obtained from modal dispersion calculations alone …
We demonstrate an efficient eigen-decomposition method for analyzing the guided modes in metal nanoparticle chains. The proposed method has the advantage of showing the dispersion relation and mode quality simultaneously. It can also separate the material and geometrical properties, so its efficiency does not depend on the complexity of the material polarizability. The method is applied to analyze the guided modes of a single and a pair of metal chains. The more accurate dynamic dipole polarizability typically gives a red-shift compared with the results obtained with the broadly used quasistat…

Common intuition in physics is based on the concept of orthogonal eigenmodes. Those are well de- fined solutions of Hermitian equations used to describe many physical situations, from quantum mechanics to acoustics. A large variety of non-Hermitian problems, including gravitational waves close to black holes or leaky electromagnetic cavities require the use of bi-orthogonal eigenbasis. Physical consequences of non-Hermiticity challenge our physical understanding. However, the usual need to compensate for energy losses made the few successful attempts to probe non-Hermiticity extremely complica…
Serving as a new two-dimensional plasmonic material, graphene has stimulated an intensive study of its optical properties which benefit from the unique electronic band structure of the underlying honeycomb lattice of carbon atoms. In classical electrodynamics, nanostructured graphene is commonly modeled by the computationally demanding problem of a three-dimensional conducting film of atomic-scale thickness. Here, we propose an efficient alternative two-dimensional electrostatic approach where all the calculation procedures are restricted to the plane of the graphene sheet. To explore possible…
We demonstrate that soliton-plasmon bound states appear naturally as propagating eigenmodes of nonlinear Maxwell's equations for a metal/dielectric/Kerr interface. By means of a variational method, we give an explicit and simplified expression for the full-vector nonlinear operator of the system. Soliplasmon states (propagating surface soliton-plasmon modes) can be then analytically calculated as eigenmodes of this non-selfadjoint operator. The theoretical treatment of the system predicts the key features of the stationary solutions and gives physical insight to understand the inherent stabili…
A new tuning mechanism is demonstrated for single-mode metal-clad plasmonic lasers, in which refractive-index of the laser's surrounding medium affects the resonant-cavity mode in the same vein as refractive-index of gain medium inside the cavity. Reversible, continuous, and mode-hop-free tuning of ~57GHz is realized for single-mode narrow-beam terahertz plasmonic quantum-cascade lasers (QCLs), which is demonstrated at much more practical temperature of 78K. The tuning is based on post-process deposition/etching of a dielectric (Silicon-dioxide) on a QCL chip that has already been soldered and…
We use cathodoluminescence to locate droplet epitaxy quantum dots with a precision $\lesssim$ nm before fabricating nanoantennas in their vicinity by electron-beam lithography. Cathodoluminescence is further used to evidence the effect of the antennas as a function of their length on the light emitted by the dot. Experimental results are in good agreement with numerical simulations of the structures.
We investigate the exceptional points (EPs) in a non-Hermitian system composed of a pair of graphene sheets with different losses. There are two surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) modes in the graphene waveguide. By varying the distance between two graphene sheets and chemical potential of graphene, the EPs appear as the eigenvalues, that is, the wave vectors of the two modes coalesce. The cross conversion of eigenmodes and variation of geometric phase can be observed by encircling the EP in the parametric space formed by the geometric parameters and chemical potential of graphene. At the same t…
We study how the collective effects of nanoparticles arranged in rectangular arrays influence their temporal plasmon response and field enhancement property. By systematically changing the lattice constant for arrays containing identical metal nanorods, we experimentally demonstrate how grating induced effects affect the position and, more importantly, the broadening of extinction spectra. We correlate these effects with the achievable field enhancement and the temporal duration of plasmon transients and formulate criteria for the generation of enhanced few-cycle localized plasmon oscillations…
We propose several planar layouts of ultra-compact plasmonic waveguide modulators that utilize alternative CMOS-compatible materials. The modulation is efficiently achieved by tuning the carrier concentration in a transparent conducting oxide layer, thereby tuning the waveguide either in plasmonic resonance or off-resonance. Resonance significantly increases the absorption coefficient of the plasmonic waveguide, which enables larger modulation depth. We show that an extinction ratio of 86 dB/um can be achieved, allowing for a 3-dB modulation depth in less than one micron at the telecommunicati…
We use our vector Maxwell's nonlinear eigenmode solver to study the stationary solutions in 2D cross-section waveguides with Kerr nonlinear cores. This solver is based on the fixed power algorithm within the finite element method. First, studying nonlinear plasmonic slot waveguides, we demonstrate that, even in the low power regime, 1D studies may not provide accurate and meaningfull results compared to 2D ones. Second, we study at high powers the link between the nonlinear parameter $γ_{nl}$ and the change of the nonlinear propagation constant $Δβ$. Third, for a specific type of photonic crys…
We examine the mechanical eigenmodes of a quartz tuning fork (QTF) for the purpose of facilitat- ing its use as a probe for multi-frequency atomic force microscopy (AFM). We perform simulations based on the three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) and compare the observed motions of the beams with experimentally measured resonance frequencies of two QTF systems. The com- parison enabled us to assign the first seven asymmetric eigenmodes of the QTF. We also find that a modified version of single beam theory can be used to guide the assignment of mechanical eigen- modes of QTFs. The usefuln…
Fully reconfigurable metasurfaces would enable new classes of optical devices that provide unprecedented control of electromagnetic beamforms. The principal challenge for achieving reconfigurability is the need to generate large tunability of subwavelength, low-Q metasurface resonators. Here, we demonstrate large refractive index tuning can be efficiently facilitated at mid-infrared wavelengths using novel temperature-dependent control over free-carrier refraction. In doped InSb we demonstrate nearly two-fold increase in the electron effective mass leading to a positive refractive index shift …

We study an ultra-compact plasmonic modulator that can be applied in photonic integrated circuits. The modulator is a metal-insulator-metal waveguide with an additional ultra-thin layer of indium tin oxide (ITO). Bias is applied to the multilayer core by means of metal plates that serve as electrodes. External field changes carrier density in the ultra-thin ITO layer, which influences the permittivity. The metal-insulator-metal system possesses a plasmon resonance, and it is strongly affected by changes in the permittivity of the active layer. To improve performance of the structure we propose…
Atomic sized plasmonic tunnel junctions are of fundamental interest, with great promise as the smallest on-chip light sources in various optoelectronic applications. Several mechanisms of light emission in electrically driven plasmonic tunnel junctions have been proposed, from single-electron or higher order multi-electron inelastic tunneling to recombination from a steady-state population of hot carriers. By progressively altering the tunneling conductance of an aluminum junction, we tune the dominant light emission mechanism through these possibilities for the first time, finding quantitativ…
Cathodoluminescence spectroscopy performed in an electron microscope has proven a versatile tool for analysing the near- and far-field optical response of plasmonic and dielectric nanostructures. Nevertheless, the transition radiation produced by electron impact is often disregarded in the interpretation of the spectra recorded from resonant nanoparticles. Here we show, experimentally and theoretically, that transition radiation can by itself generate distinct resonances which, depending on the time of flight of the electron beam inside the particle, can result from constructive or destructive…
Selective configuration control of plasmonic nanostructures using either top-down or bottom-up approaches has remained challenging in the field of active plasmonics. We demonstrate the realization of DNA-assembled reconfigurable plasmonic metamolecules, which can respond to a wide range of pH changes in a programmable manner. This programmability allows for selective reconfiguration of different plasmonic metamolecule species coexisting in solution through simple pH tuning. This approach enables discrimination of chiral plasmonic quasi-enantiomers and arbitrary tuning of chiroptical effects wi…
By tuning the radiative coupling of localized surface plasmons to diffracted orders, we demonstrate how stop-gaps in plasmonic crystals of nanorods may be opened and tuned. The stop-gap arises from the mutual coupling of surface lattice resonances (SLRs), which are collective resonances associated with counter-propagating surface polaritons. We present experimental results for three different nanorod arrays, where we show how the dispersion of SLRs can be controlled by modifying the size of the rods. Combining experiments with numerical simulations, we show how the properties of the stop-gap c…
Color tuning is a fascinating and indispensable property in applications such as advanced display, active camouflaging and information encryption. Thus far, a variety of reconfigurable approaches have been implemented to achieve color change. However, it is still a challenge to enable a continuous color tuning over the entire hue range in a simple, stable and rapid manner without changes in configuration and material properties. Here, we demonstrate an all-optical continuously tunable plasmonic pixel scheme via a modular design approach to realize polarization-controlled full color tuning by b…
We propose a mechanism to actively tune the operation of plasmonic cloaks with an external magnetic field by investigating electromagnetic scattering by a dielectric cylinder coated with a magneto-optical shell. In the long wavelength limit we show that the presence of an external magnetic field may drastically reduce the scattering cross-section at all observation angles. We demonstrate that the application of external magnetic fields can modify the operation wavelength without the need of changing material and/or geometrical parameters. We also show that applied magnetic fields can reversibl…
Nanostructures of conventional metals offer manipulation of light at the nanoscale but are limited to static behavior due to their fixed material properties. To develop the next frontier of dynamic nanooptics and metasurfaces, we utilize the redox-tunable optical properties of conducting polymers, which were recently shown to be capable of sustaining plasmons in their most conducting oxidized state. Using nanodisks of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene:sulfate) (PEDOT:Sulf) as a model system, we present the first electrically tunable conducting polymer nanooptical antennas. In addition to repeate…

Actively tunable, narrowband spectral filtering across arbitrary optical wavebands is highly desirable in a plethora of applications, from chemical sensing, hyperspectral imaging to infrared astronomy. Yet, the ability to actively reconfigure the optical properties of a solid-state narrowband filter remains elusive. Existing solutions require either moving parts, have slow response times or provide limited spectral coverage. Here, we demonstrate a continuously tunable, spectrally-agnostic, all-solid-state, narrowband phase-change metasurface filter based on a GeSbTe (GST)-embedded plasmonic na…

Eigenvalue problems for electromagnetic resonant states on open dielectric structures are non-Hermitian and may have exceptional points (EPs) at which two or more eigenfrequencies and the corresponding eigenfunctions coalesce. EPs of resonant states for photonic structures give rise to a number of unusual wave phenomena and have potentially important applications. It is relatively easy to find a few EPs for a structure with parameters, but isolated EPs provide no information about their formation and variation in parameter space, and it is always difficult to ensure that all EPs in a domain of…
Chiral lattice modes are hybrid states arising from chiral plasmonic particles assembled in ordered arrays with opportune periodicity. These resonances exhibit dependence on excitation handedness, and their observation in plasmonic lattices is strictly related to the chiroptical features of the fundamental plasmonic unit. Here, we show the emergence of chiral surface lattice resonances in properly engineered arrays of nanohelices, fully 3D chiral nano-objects fabricated by focused ion beam processing. By tuning the relative weight of plasmonic and photonic components in the hybrid mode, we ana…
The response of an electron system to electromagnetic fields with sharp spatial variations is strongly dependent on quantum electronic properties, even in ambient conditions, but difficult to access experimentally. We use propagating graphene plasmons, together with an engineered dielectric-metallic environment, to probe the graphene electron liquid and unveil its detailed electronic response at short wavelengths. The near-field imaging experiments reveal a parameter-free match with the full theoretical quantum description of the massless Dirac electron gas, in which we identify three types of …

Plasmonic nano-antennas can focus light to nanometre length-scales providing intense field enhancements. For the tightest optical confinements (0.5-5 nm) achieved in plasmonic gaps, the gap spacing, refractive index, and facet width play a dominant role in determining the optical properties making tuning through antenna shape challenging. We show here that controlling the surrounding refractive index instead allows both efficient frequency tuning and enhanced in/output-coupling through retardation matching as this allows dark modes to become optically active, improving widespread functionaliti…
