We reveal the existence of continuous families of guided single-mode solitons in planar waveguides with weakly nonlinear active core and absorbing boundaries. Stable propagation of TE and TM-polarized solitons is accompanied by attenuation of all other modes, i.e. the waveguide features properties of conservative and dissipative systems. If the linear spectrum of the waveguide possesses exceptional points, which occurs in the case of TM-polarization, an originally focusing (defocusing) material nonlinearity may become effectively defocusing (focusing). This occurs due to the geometric phase of the carried eigenmode when the surface impedance encircles the exceptional point. In its turn the change of the effective nonlinearity ensures the existence of dark (bright) solitons in spite of focusing (defocusing) Kerr nonlinearity of the core. The existence of an exceptional point can also result in anomalous enhancement of the effective nonlinearity. In terms of practical applications the nonlinearity of the reported waveguide can be manipulated by controlling the properties of the absorbing cladding.
We analyze the time-domain dynamics of resonators supporting exceptional points (EPs), at which both the eigenfrequencies and the eigenmodes associated with perfect capture of an input wave coalesce. We find that a time-domain signature of the EP is an expansion of the class of waveforms which can be perfectly captured. We show that such resonators have improved performance for storage or transduction of energy. They also can be used to convert between waveforms within this class. We analytically derive these features and demonstrate them for several examples of coupled optical resonator syste…
We identify a new kind of physically realizable exceptional point (EP) corresponding to degenerate coherent perfect absorption, in which two purely incoming solutions of the wave operator for electromagnetic or acoustic waves coalesce to a single state. Such non-hermitian degeneracies can occur at a real-valued frequency without any associated noise or non-linearity, in contrast to EPs in lasers. The absorption lineshape for the eigenchannel near the EP is quartic in frequency around its maximum in any dimension. In general, for the parameters at which an operator EP occurs, the associated sca…
The role of nonlinearity on topology has been investigated extensively in Hermitian systems, while nonlinearity has only been used as a tuning knob in a PT symmetric non-Hermitian system. Here, in our work, we show that nonlinearity plays a crucial role in forming topological singularities of non-Hermitian systems. We provide a simple and intuitive example by demonstrating with both theory and circuit experiments an exceptional nexus (EX), a higher-order exceptional point with a hybrid topological invariant (HTI), within only two coupled resonators with the aid of nonlinear gain. Phase rigidit…
The dynamical encirclement around a second order exceptional point (EP) and corresponding chirality driven nonadiabatic modal dynamics have attracted enormous attention in the topological study of various non-Hermitian systems. However, dynamical encirclement around multiple second-order EPs in a multi-state system is yet to be explored. Here, exploiting an exclusive design of a planar gain-loss assisted three-mode supported optical waveguide with local Kerr-nonlinearity, we encounter multiple second-order EPs. Judiciously, choosing a specific parameter space by varying the unbalanced gain-los…
Manipulative resonant nonlinear optics: nonlinear interference effects and quantum control of nonlinearity, dispersion, transparency and inversionless amplification in an extended strongly-absorbing inhomogeneously-broadened medium
Dynamical encirclement of an Exceptional Point (EP) and corresponding time-asymmetric mode evolution properties due to breakdown in adiabatic theorem have been a key to range of exotic physical effects in various open atomic, molecular and optical systems. Here, exploiting a gain-loss assisted dual-mode optical waveguide that hosts a dynamical EP-encirclement scheme, we have explored enhanced nonreciprocal effect in the dynamics of light with onset of saturable nonlinearity in the optical medium. We propose a prototype waveguide-based isolation scheme with judicious tuning of nonlinearity leve…
We study the existence of one-dimensional localized states supported by linear periodic potentials and a domain-wall-like Kerr nonlinearity. The model gives rise to several new types of asymmetric localized states, including single- and double-hump soliton profiles, and multihump structures. Exploiting the linear stability analysis and direct simulations, we prove that these localized states are exceptional stable in the respective finite band gaps. The model applies to Bose-Einstein condensates loaded onto optical lattices, and in optics with period potentials, e.g., the photonic crystals and…
The past few years have witnessed growing interests in exceptional points (EPs) in various domains, including photonics, acoustics and electronics. However, EPs have mainly been realized based on the degeneracy of resonances of physical systems; distinct degeneracies occur relating to the absorption properties of waves, with distinct physical manifestations. Here we demonstrate this physically different kind of exceptional point, by engineering degeneracies in the absorption spectrum of optical microcavities with dissipation. We experimentally distinguish the conditions to realize a resonant E…
Parity-time (PT) symmetric systems have two distinguished phases, e.g., one with real energy eigenvalues and the other with complex conjugate eigenvalues. To enter one phase from the other, it is believed that the system must pass through an exceptional point, which is a non-Hermitian degenerate point with coalesced eigenvalues and eigenvectors. In this letter we reveal an anomalous PT transition that takes place away from an exceptional point in a nonlinear system: as the nonlinearity increases, the original linear system evolves along two distinct PT-symmetric trajectories, each of which can…
Almost twenty years ago the light was slowed down to less than $10^{-7}$ of its vacuum speed in a cloud of ultracold atoms of sodium. Upon a sudden turn-off of the coupling laser, a slow light pulse can be imprinted on cold atoms such that it can be read out and converted into photon again. In this process, the light is stopped by absorbing it and storing its shape within the atomic ensemble. Alternatively, the light can be stopped at the band edge in photonic-crystal waveguides, where the group speed vanishes. Here we extend the phenomenon of stopped light to the new field of parity-time (PT)…
We construct families of one-dimensional (1D) stable solitons in two-component $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric systems with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and quintic nonlinearity, which plays the critical role in 1D setups. The system models light propagation in a dual-core waveguide with skewed coupling between the cores. Stability regions for the solitons are identified in the system's parameter space. They include the main semi-infinite gap, and an additional finite $\textit{annex gap}$. Stability boundaries are identified by means of simulations of the perturbed evolution, which agree with results pr…
Weyl points are the simplest topologically-protected degeneracy in a three-dimensional dispersion relation. The realization of Weyl semimetals in photonic crystals has allowed these singularities and their consequences to be explored with electromagnetic waves. However, it is difficult to achieve nonlinearities in such systems. One promising approach is to use the strong-coupling of photons and excitons, because the resulting polaritons interact through their exciton component. Yet topological polaritons have only been realized in two dimensions. Here, we predict that the dispersion relation f…

Experiments near the lock-in region in maximally dissipative non-Hermitian systems, e.g., conventional laser gyroscopes near the deadband, have run up against the Petermann limit, where excess noise exactly cancels any scale-factor enhancement resulting in no overall enhancement in precision. As a result, one might be tempted to conclude that exceptional points (EPs) generally cannot be used to increase the precision of laser sensors. Indeed, using a linear eigenmode analysis we show that the Petermann limit applies not just to maximally dissipative systems, but for any type of EP, owing to th…

We address dissipative soliton formation in modulated PT-symmetric continuous waveguide arrays composed from waveguides with amplifying and absorbing sections, whose density gradually increases (due to decreasing waveguide separation) either towards the center of the array or towards its edges. In such a structure the level of gain/loss at which PT-symmetry gets broken depends on the direction of increase of the waveguide density. Breakup of the PT-symmetry occurs when eigenvalues of modes localized in the region, where waveguide density is largest, collide and move into complex plane. In this…
