We study the spontaneous emission rate of a dipole emitter in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric environment of two coupled waveguides using the reciprocity approach generalized to non-orthogonal eigenmodes of non-Hermitian systems. Considering emission to the guided modes, we define and calculate the modal Purcell factor composed of contributions of independent and interfering non-orthogonal modes leading to the emergence of cross-mode terms in the Purcell factor. We reveal that the closed-form expression for the modal Purcell factor within the coupled mode theory slightly alters for the non-Hermitian coupled waveguide compared to the Hermitian case. It is true even near the exceptional point, where the eigenmodes coalesce and the Petermann factor goes to infinity. This result is fully confirmed by the numerical simulations of active and passive $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric systems being the consequence of the mode non-orthogonality.
This chapter overviews the principles of the spontaneous emission rate increase, that is the Purcell effect, in relation to the photonic parity-time (PT) symmetry. Being focused on the system of coupled PT-symmetric optical waveguides, we consider behaviors of the Purcell factor in PT-symmetric and broken-PT-symmetric regimes. Surprisingly, exceptional points in a coupled waveguide do not influence on the Purcell factor.
We present an inverse design approach to significantly improve the figures-of-merit for chiral photon elements and quantum emitters in topological photonic crystal slab waveguides. Beginning with a topological waveguide mode with a group index of approximately 10 and a maximum forwards or backwards Purcell factor at a chiral point of less than 0.5, we perform optimizations of the directional Purcell factor. We use a fully three dimensional guided-mode expansion method to efficiently calculate waveguide band dispersion properties and modes, while automatic differentiation is employed to calcula…
For integrated optical devices, realistic utilization of the superior wave-matter interaction offered by plasmonics is typically impeded by optical losses, which increase rapidly with mode volume reduction. Although coupled-mode plasmonic structures has demonstrated effective alleviation of the loss-confinement trade-off, stringent symmetry requirements must be enforced for such reduction to prevail. In this work, we report an asymmetric plasmonic waveguide that is not only capable of guiding subwavelength optical mode with long-range propagation, but is also unrestricted by structural, materi…
The authors investigate the spontaneous emission dynamics of self-assembled InGaAs quantum dots embedded in GaAs photonic crystal waveguides. For an ensemble of dots coupled to guided modes in the waveguide we report spatially, spectrally, and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements, detecting normal to the plane of the photonic crystal. For quantum dots emitting in resonance with the waveguide mode, a ~21x enhancement of photoluminescence intensity is observed as compared to dots in the unprocessed region of the wafer. This enhancement can be traced back to the Purcell enhanced emission …
We present a heuristic mathematical model of the relation between the geometry of a photonic crystal waveguide and the Purcell enhancement factor at a particular wavelength of interest. We use this model to propose approaches to the design of a photonic crystal waveguide maximizing the Purcell enhancement at a target wavelength. Numerical simulations indicate that the proposed structures exhibit robustness to fabrication defects introduced into photonic crystal geometry.
We propose a scheme to realize controlled phase gate between two single photons through a single quantum dot in slow-light silicon photonic crystal waveguide. Enhanced Purcell factor and beta factor lead to high gate fidelity over broadband frequencies compared to cavity-assisted system. The excellent physical integration of this silicon photonic crystal waveguide system provides tremendous potential for large-scale quantum information processing.
We study the effect of coupled resonances and quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs) on the Purcell factor in dielectric resonant nanoantennas. We analyze numerically interfering resonances in a nanodisk with and without a substrate when the modes are coupled to an emitter localized inside the nanodisk, and we quantify the modal contributions to the Purcell factor also reconstructing the radiation patterns of the resonant system. It is revealed that the Purcell effect can be boosted substantially for a strong coupling of resonances in the quasi-BIC regime.
We present a modal approach to compute the Purcell factor in Mie resonators exhibiting both electric and magnetic resonances. The analytic expressions of the normal modes are used to calculate the effective volumes. We show that important features of the effective volume can be predicted thanks to the translation-addition coefficients of a displaced dipole. Using our formalism, it is easy to see that, in general, the Purcell factor of Mie resonators is not dominated by a single mode, but rather by a large superposition. Finally we consider a silicon resonator homogeneously doped with electric …
We introduce a photonic crystal waveguide-cavity system for controlling single photon cavity-QED processes. Exploiting Bloch mode analysis, and medium-dependent Green function techniques, we demonstrate that the propagation of single photons can be accurately described analytically, for integrated periodic waveguides with little more than four unit cells, including an output coupler. We verify our analytical approach by comparing to rigorous numerical calculations for a range of photonic crystal waveguide lengths. This allows one to nano-engineer various regimes of cavity-QED with unprecedente…
Based on the reciprocity theorem, we present a formalism to calculate the power emitted by a dipole source into a particular propagating mode leaving an open optical system. The open system is completely arbitrary and the approach can be used in analytical calculations but may also be combined with numerical electromagnetic solvers to describe the emission of light sources into complex systems. We exemplify the use of the formalism in numerical simulations by analyzing the emission of a dipole that is placed inside a cavity with connected single mode exit waveguide. Additionally, we show at th…
We theoretically explore the possibility of reducing the propagation loss in a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide, using mode combinations to achieve wall-avoiding field distributions along a certain propagation length. We present analytical results for several waveguides showing notable loss reduction, and we discuss the tradeoffs between low loss and high confinement present in this technique.
We design planar silicon antennas for controlling the emission rate of magnetic or electric dipolar emitters. Evolutionary algorithms coupled to the Green Dyadic Method lead to different optimized geometries which depend on the nature and orientation of the dipoles. We discuss the physical origin of the obtained configurations thanks to modal analysis but also emphasize the role of nanoscale design of the LDOS. We complete our study using finite element method and demonstrate an enhancement up to 2000 of the magnetic Purcell factor in europium ions. Our work brings together random optimization…
Strong interaction between light and a single quantum emitter is essential to a great number of applications, including single photon sources. Microcavities and plasmonic antennas have been used frequently to enhance these interactions through the Purcell effect. Both can provide large emission enhancements: the cavity typically through long photon lifetimes (high $Q$), and the antenna mostly through strong field enhancement (low mode volume $V$). In this work, we demonstrate that a hybrid system, which combines a cavity and a dipolar antenna, can achieve stronger emission enhancements than th…
We theoretically investigate several types of plasmonic slot waveguides for enhancing the measured signal in Raman spectroscopy, which is a consequence of electric field and Purcell factor enhancements, as well as an increase in light-matter interaction volume and the Raman signal collection efficiency. An intuitive methodology is presented for calculating the accumulated Raman enhancement factor of an ensemble of molecules in waveguide sensing, which exploits an analytical photon Green function expansion in terms of the waveguide normal modes, and we combine this with a quantum optics formali…
Flexible control of the modal confinement in silicon photonic waveguides is an appealing feature for many applications, including sensing and hybrid integration of active materials. In most cases, strip waveguides are the preferred solution to maximize the light interaction with the waveguide surroundings. However, the only two degrees of freedom in Si strip waveguides are the width and thickness, resulting in limited flexibility in evanescent field control. Here, we propose and demonstrate a new strategy that exploits metamaterial engineering of the waveguide core and cladding to control the …
This paper shows how to analyze plasmonic metal-insulator-metal waveguides using the full modal structure of these guides. The analysis applies to all frequencies, particularly including the near infrared and visible spectrum, and to a wide range of sizes, including nanometallic structures. We use the approach here specifically to analyze waveguide junctions. We show that the full modal structure of the metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguides--which consists of real and complex discrete eigenvalue spectra, as well as the continuous spectrum--forms a complete basis set. We provide the derivation…
We report a numerical design procedure for pursuing a near-unity coupling efficiency in quantum dot-cavity ridge waveguide single-photon sources by performing simulations with the finite element method. Our optimum design which is based on a 1D nanobeam cavity, achieves a high source efficiency $ε_{xy}$ of 97.7$\%$ for an isotropic in-plane dipole, together with a remarkable Purcell factor of 38.6. Such a good performance is mainly attributed to the high index contrast of GaAs/SiO$_2$ and a careful cavity design achieving constructive interference and low scattering losses. Furthermore, we ana…
We study the dispersion relations in slow-light waveguide structures consisting of coupled microdisk resonators. A group theoretical analysis of the symmetry properties of the propagating modes reveals an interesting phenomenon: The degeneracy of the CW and CCW rotating modes is removed, giving rise to two distinct transmission bands. This effect induces symmetry-based dispersion which may limit usable bandwidth of such structures. The properties of this band splitting and its impact on CROW performance for optical communications are studied in detail.
There has been increasing interest in making the photonic devices more and more compact in the integrated photonics industry, and one of the important questions for manufacturers and design engineers is how to quantify the effect of the finite cladding thickness on the modal confinement loss of photonic waveguides. This requires at least six to seven digits accuracy for the computation of propagation constant $β$ since the modal confinement loss is proportional to the imaginary part of $β$ that is six to seven orders of magnitude smaller than its real part by the industrial standard. In this p…
We study the symmetric properties of waveguide modes in presence of gain/losses, anisotropy/bianisotropy, or continuous/discrete rotational symmetry. We provide a comprehensive approach to identity the modal symmetry by constructing a $4\times4$ waveguide Hamiltonian and searching the symmetric operation in association with the corresponding waveguides. We classify the chiral/time reversal/parity/parity time/rotational symmetry for different waveguides, and provide the criterion for the aforementioned symmetry operations. Lastly, we provide examples to illustrate how the symmetry operations ca…
The Purcell factor $F_p$ is a key quantity in cavity quantum electrodynamics (cQED) that quantifies the coupling rate between a dipolar emitter and a cavity mode. Its simple form $F_p\propto Q/V$ unravels the possible strategies to enhance and control light-matter interaction. Practically, efficient light-matter interaction is achieved thanks to either i) high quality factor $Q$ at the basis of cQED or ii) low modal volume $V$ at the basis of nanophotonics and plasmonics. In the last decade, strong efforts have been done to derive a plasmonic Purcell factor in order to transpose cQED concepts …
We analyze wave propagation in coupled planar waveguides, pointing specific attention to modal cross-talk and out-of-plane scattering in quasi-planar photonics. An algorithm capable of accurate numerical computation of wave coupling in arrays of planar structures is developed and illustrated on several examples of plasmonic and volumetric waveguides. An analytical approach to reduce or completely eliminate scattering and modal cross-talk in planar waveguides with anisotropic materials is also presented.
We report a 1D planar optical waveguide with transverse distribution of inhomogeneous loss profile, which exhibits an exceptional point (EP). The waveguide hosts two leaky resonant modes; where the interaction between them in the vicinity of the EP is controlled by proper adjustment of the inhomogeneity in attenuation profile only. We study the adiabatic dynamics of propagation constants of the coupled modes by quasi-static encirclement of control parameters around the EP. Realizing such an encirclement with the inhomogeneous loss distribution along the direction of light propagation, we repor…
Single-photon emitters integrated into quantum optical circuits will enable new, miniaturized quantum optical devices. Here, we numerically investigate semiconductor quantum dots embedded to low refractive index contrast waveguides. We discuss a model to compute the coupling efficiency of the emitted light field to the fundamental propagation mode of the waveguide, and we optimize the waveguide dimensional parameters for maximum coupling efficiency. Further, we show that for a laterally cropped waveguide the interplay of Purcell-enhancement and optimized field profile can enhance the coupling …
We introduce a new platform for realizing on-chip quantum electrodynamics using photonic crystal waveguide structures comprised of periodic nanowire arrays with embedded semiconductor quantum dots to act as quantum light sources. These nanowire-based structures, which can now be fabricated with excellent precision, are found to produce waveguide Purcell factors exceeding 100 and on-chip beta factors up to 99%. We investigate the fundamental optical properties of photonic crystal waveguides and finite-size structures using both photonic band structure calculations and rigorous Green function co…
The structure of an optical waveguide determines the characteristics of its guided modes, such as their spatial profile and group index. General features are shared by modes regardless of the waveguiding structure; for example, modal dispersion is inevitable in multimode waveguides, every mode experiences group-velocity dispersion, and higher-order modes are usually slower than their lower-order counterparts. We show here that such trends can be fundamentally altered -- altogether severing the link between modal order and group index hybrid and eliminating dispersion -- by exploiting hybrid gu…
We demonstrate the in-plane emission of highly-polarized single photons from an InAs quantum dot embedded into a photonic crystal waveguide. The spontaneous emission rates are Purcell-enhanced by the coupling of the quantum dot to a slow-light mode of the waveguide. Photon-correlation measurements confirm the sub-Poissonian statistics of the in-plane emission. Under optical pulse excitation, single photon emission rates of up to 19 MHz into the guided mode are demonstrated, which corresponds to a device efficiency of 24%. These results herald the monolithic integration of sources in photonic q…
Nanoscale generation of individual photons in confined geometries is an exciting research field aiming at exploiting localized electromagnetic fields for light manipulation. One of the outstanding challenges of photonic systems combining emitters with nanostructured media is the selective channelling of photons emitted by embedded sources into specific optical modes and their transport at distant locations in integrated systems. Here, we show that soft-matter nanofibers, electrospun with embedded emitters, combine subwavelength field localization and large broadband near-field coupling with lo…
Spin-dependent, directional light-matter interactions form the basis of chiral quantum networks. In the solid state, quantum emitters commonly possess circularly polarised optical transitions with spin-dependent handedness. We demonstrate numerically that spin-dependent chiral coupling can be realised by embedding such an emitter in a waveguide-coupled nanocavity, which supports two near-degenerate, orthogonally-polarised cavity modes. The chiral behaviour arises due to direction-dependent interference between the cavity modes upon coupling to two single-mode output waveguides. Notably, an exp…
Optical nanostructures have proven to be meritorious for tailoring the emission properties of quantum emitters. However, unavoidable fabrication imperfections may represent a nuisance. Quite remarkably, disorder offers new opportunities since light can be efficiently confined by random multiple scattering leading to Anderson localization. Here we investigate the effect of such disorder-induced cavities on the emission dynamics of single quantum dots embedded in disordered photonic-crystal waveguides. We present time-resolved measurements of both the total emission from Anderson-localized cavit…
We investigate the group velocity distribution of waveguide modes in the presence of disorder. The results are based on extensive numerical simulations of disordered optical waveguides using statistical methods. We observe that the narrowest distribution of group velocities is obtained in the presence of a small amount of disorder; therefore, the modal dispersion of an optical pulse is minimized when there is only a slight disorder in the waveguide. The absence of disorder or the presence of a large amount of disorder can result in a large modal dispersion due to the broadening of the distribu…
Dynamical parametric encirclement around an Exceptional Point (EP) and corresponding asymmetric state transfer phenomenon have attracted considerable attention recently. In this context, beyond the reported time-asymmetric state dynamics around a second-order EP (EP2) in a two-level system, the investigation of similar state dynamics around a third-order EP (EP3) in a multi-state system, having comparably complex topology with rich physics, is lacking. Here, we report a fabrication-feasible few-mode planar optical waveguide with a customized gain-loss profile and investigate the effect of dyna…
We present measurements of the beta-factor, describing the coupling efficiency of light emitted by single InAs/GaAs semiconductor quantum dots into a photonic crystal waveguide mode. The beta-factor is evaluated by means of time-resolved frequency-dependent photoluminescence spectroscopy. The emission wavelength of single quantum dots is temperature tuned across the band edge of a photonic crystal waveguide and the spontaneous emission rate is recorded. Decay rates up to 5.7 ns^(-1), corresponding to a Purcell factor of 5.2, are measured and beta-factors up to 85% are extracted. These results …
We explore exceptional points (EP) in a dual-mode symmetric planar optical waveguide with transverse variation of inhomogeneous loss profile; where modal evolution alongside an EP is reported in the context of selective optical mode conversion.
A flexible and efficient method for fully vectorial modal analysis of 3D dielectric optical waveguides with arbitrary 2D cross-sections is proposed. The technique is based on expansion of each modal component in some a priori defined functions defined on one coordinate axis times some unknown coefficient-functions, defined on the other axis. By applying a variational restriction procedure the unknown coefficient-functions are determined, resulting in an optimum approximation of the true vectorial mode profile. This technique can be related to both Effective Index and Mode Matching methods. A c…
Inter-modal coupling in photonic bandgap optical channels in magnetic films is used to leverage the transverse-electric (TE) to transverse-magnetic (TM) mode conversion due to the Faraday Effect. The underlying mechanism is traced to the dependence of the grating coupling-constant on the modal refractive index and the mode profile of the propagating beam, a feature that arises in waveguide propagation and is not present in normal-incidence stack magnetophotonic crystals. Large changes in polarization near the band edges are observed in first and second orders as a result of the photonic bandga…
In this paper, we propose a method for the generation of higher dimensional modal entanglement through type II spontaneous parametric down conversion process using a three waveguide directional coupler in a periodically poled lithium niobate substrate. We show that by a proper design, it is possible to achieve an output state of two photons occupying three different spatial modes. The advantage of using such waveguide structure is its flexibility and the design space availability to achieve desired characteristics of the photon pairs generated in the down conversion process
Plasmonic waveguides based on 2D materials, which enable the formations of guided modes confined around few-layered material, are promising plasmonic platforms for the miniaturization of photonic devices. Nonetheless, such waveguides support modes that are evanescent in the waveguide core with the majority of the fields concentrated around waveguide edges, which are different from those supported by 3D dielectric waveguides where the modal fields are of oscillatory nature and peak at the center. As a result, many photonic devices and functionalities that can be achieved within 3D dielectric wa…
The dispersion of a three-way waveguide is engineered to exhibit exceptional modal characteristics. Two coupled waveguides with Parity-Time (PT) symmetry have been previously demonstrated to exhibit second order exceptional points of degeneracy (EPDs). In this work, we introduce and investigate a particular class of EPDs, applicable from radio frequency to optical wavelengths, whereby three coupled waveguides satisfy Glide-Time (GT) symmetry to exhibit a third order modal degeneracy with a real-valued wavenumber. GT symmetry involves glide symmetry of lossless/gainless components of the wavegu…
Tightly bound dark excitons in atomically thin semiconductors can be used for various optoelectronic applications including light storage and quantum communication. Their optical accessibility is however limited due to their out-of-plane transition dipole moment. We thus propose to strengthen the coupling of dark excitons in two dimensional materials with out-of-plane resonant modes of a cavity at room temperature, by engineering the anisotropy in the Purcell factor. A silica micro-disk characterised by high confinement of light in small modal volume, high Q-factor and free spectral range is u…
