We design planar silicon antennas for controlling the emission rate of magnetic or electric dipolar emitters. Evolutionary algorithms coupled to the Green Dyadic Method lead to different optimized geometries which depend on the nature and orientation of the dipoles. We discuss the physical origin of the obtained configurations thanks to modal analysis but also emphasize the role of nanoscale design of the LDOS. We complete our study using finite element method and demonstrate an enhancement up to 2000 of the magnetic Purcell factor in europium ions. Our work brings together random optimizations to explore geometric parameters without constraint, a first order deterministic approach to understand the optimized designs and a modal analysis which clarifies the physical origin of the exaltation of the magnetic Purcell effect.
Hybrid metal-dielectric structures, which combine the advantages of both metal and dielectric materials, support high-confined but low-loss magnetic and electric resonances under deliberate arrangements. However, their potential for enhancing magnetic emission has not been explored. Here, we study the simultaneous magnetic and electric Purcell enhancement supported by a hybrid structure consisting of a dielectric nanoring and a silver nanorod Such a structure enables low Ohmic loss and highly-confined field under the mode hybridization of magnetic resonances on nanoring and electric resonances…
The Purcell effect is usually described as a modification of the spontaneous decay rate in the presence of a resonator. In plasmonics, this effect is commonly associated with a large local-field enhancement in "hot spots" due to the excitation of surface plasmons. However, high-index dielectric nanostructures, which become the basis of all-dielectric nanophotonics, can not provide high values of the local-field enhancement due to larger radiation losses. Here, we demonstrate how to achieve a strong Purcell effect in all-dielectric nanostructures, and show theoretically that the Purcell factor …
The use of metamaterial as a way to mitigate the negative effects of absorption in metals on the Purcell effect in metal-dielectric structures is investigated. A layered metal-dielectric structure is considered as an anisotropic medium in the long-wavelength limit. The dispersion of the surface plasmon appearing at the boundary between such a structure and a different dielectric material, as well as the position of the peak in the local density of states are studied for various combinations of materials and filling factors of the periodic structure. The calculated frequency dependence of the P…
The intensity of Smith-Purcell radiation from metallic and dielectric gratings (silicon, silica) is compared in a frequency-domain simulation. The numerical model is discussed and verified with the Frank-Tamm formula for Cherenkov radiation. For 30 keV electrons, rectangular dielectric gratings are less efficient than their metallic counterpart, by an order of magnitude for silicon, and two orders of magnitude for silica. For all gratings studied, radiation intensity oscillates with grating tooth height due to electromagnetic resonances in the grating. 3D and 2D numerical models are compared.
Strong light-induced interactions between atoms are known to cause nonlinearities at a few-photon level which are crucial for applications in quantum information processing. Compared to free space, the scattering and the light-induced dipolar interaction of atoms can be enhanced by a dielectric environment. For this \emph{Purcell effect}, either a cavity or a waveguide can be used. Here, we combine the high densities achievable in thermal atomic vapors with an efficient coupling to a slot waveguide. In contrast to free-space interactions, atoms aligned within the slot exhibit repulsive interac…
We study theoretically the enhancement of spontaneous emission in wire metamaterials. We analyze the dependence of the Purcell factor dependence on wire dielectric constant for both electric and magnetic dipole sources, and find an optimal value of the dielectric constant for maximizing the Purcell factor for the electric dipole. We obtain analytical expressions for the Purcell factor and also provide estimates for the Purcell factor in realistic structures operating in both microwave and optical spectral range.
We consider radiation generated by an electron travelling parallel to a planar rectangular silicon grating: Smith-Purcell radiation to the vacuum side, internal Smith-Purcell radiation into the dielectric, and Cherenkov radiation into the dielectric. Internal Smith-Purcell radiation dominates over the other two radiation mechanisms in the range where conventional Smith-Purcell radiation is forbidden. This observation may lead to improved design of contactless particle beam monitors.
An emitter in the vicinity of a metal nanostructure is quenched by its decay through non-radiative channels, leading to the belief in a zone of inactivity for emitters placed within $<$10nm of a plasmonic nanostructure. Here we demonstrate that in tightly-coupled plasmonic resonators forming nanocavities "quenching is quenched" due to plasmon mixing. Unlike isolated nanoparticles, plasmonic nanocavities show mode hybridization which massively enhances emitter excitation and decay via radiative channels. This creates ideal conditions for realizing single-molecule strong-coupling with plasmons, …
The Purcell effect is defined as the modification of spontaneous decay in the presence of a resonator, and in plasmonics it is usually associated with the large local-field enhancement in "hot spots" due to surface plasmon polaritons. Here we propose a novel strategy for enhancing the Purcell effect through engineering the radiation directivity without a strict requirement of the local field enhancement. Employing this approach, we demonstrate how to enhance the Purcell effect by two orders of magnitude in all-dielectric nanostructures recently suggested as building blocks of low-loss nanophot…
We experimentally demonstrate a Purcell effect-based design technique for improved impedance matching, and thus enhanced radiation efficiency from a small microwave emitter. Using an iterative process centred on comparing the phase of the radiated field of the emitter in air with that of the emitter in a dielectric environment, we optimise the structure of a dielectric hemisphere above a ground plane surrounding a small monopolar microwave emitter in order to maximise its radiation efficiency. The optimised system shows very strong coupling between the emitter and two omnidirectional radiation…

Deterministically integrated single-photon sources in nanoplasmonic circuits lead to densely packed scalable quantum logic circuits operating beyond the diffraction limit. Here, we report the coupling efficiency of single-photon sources to the plasmonic waveguide, characteristic transmission spectrum, propagation length, decay length, and plasmonic Purcell factor. We simulated the transmission spectrum to find the appropriate wavelength for various width of the diel…
We study the spontaneous emission of a dipole emitter imbedded into a layered metal-dielectric metamaterial. We demonstrate ultra-high values of the Purcell factor in such structures due to a high density of states with hyperbolic isofrequency surfaces. We reveal that the traditional effective-medium approach greatly underestimates the value of the Purcell factor due to the presence of an effective nonlocality, and we present an analytical model which agrees well with numerical calculations.
We study the effect of coupled resonances and quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs) on the Purcell factor in dielectric resonant nanoantennas. We analyze numerically interfering resonances in a nanodisk with and without a substrate when the modes are coupled to an emitter localized inside the nanodisk, and we quantify the modal contributions to the Purcell factor also reconstructing the radiation patterns of the resonant system. It is revealed that the Purcell effect can be boosted substantially for a strong coupling of resonances in the quasi-BIC regime.
Manipulating the spontaneous emission rate of optical emitters with all-dielectric nanoparticles benefits from their low-loss nature and thus provides relatively large extrinsic quantum yield. However, such Purcell effect greatly depends on the orientation of the dipole emitter. Here, we introduce the concept of isotropic magnetic Purcell effect with Purcell factors about 300 and large extrinsic quantum yield (more than 80%) for a magnetic dipole emitter of arbitrary orientation in an asymmetric silicon nanocavity. The extrinsic quantum yield can be even boosted up to nearly 100% by utilizing …

The Purcell factor and the spontaneous emission spectrum of a quantum emitter (QE) placed close to the edge of a graphene half-space nanostructure is investigated, using semi-analytical methods at the electrostatic regime. The half-space geometry supports an edge and a bulk surface plasmon (SP) mode. The Purcell factor of the QE is enhanced over eight orders of magnitude when its emission energy matches the resonance energy modes, for a specific value of the in-plane wave vector, at a separation distance of $5\,$nm. The different transition dipole moment orientations influence differently the …
The asymptotic closed-form solution to the fundamental diffraction problem of a linear horizontal Hertzian dipole radiating over the metallo-dielectric interface is provided. For observation points just above the interface, we confirm that the total surface near-field is the sum of two components: a long-range surface plasmon polariton and a short-range radiative cylindrical wave. The relative phases, amplitudes and damping functions of each component are quantitatively elucidated through simple analytic expressions for the entire range of propagation: near and asymptotic. Validation of the an…
Engineering the photonic density of states (PDOS) using resonant microcavities or periodic dielectric media gives control over a plethora of classical and quantum phenomena associated with light. Here, we show that nanostructured metamaterials with hyperbolic dispersion, possess a broad bandwidth singularity in the PDOS, an effect not present in any other photonic system, which allows remarkable control over light-matter interactions. A spectacular manifestation of this non-resonant PDOS alteration is the broadband Purcell effect, an enhancement in the spontaneous emission of a light source, w…
We demonstrate a nanostructure composed of partially etched annular trenches in a suspended GaAs membrane, designed for efficient and moderately broadband (approx. 5 nm) emission extraction from single InAs quantum dots. High-index dielectric nanostructures have recently become prominent forefront alternatives for manipulating light at the nanoscale. Their electric and magnetic resonances with intriguing characteristics endow them with a unique ability to strongly enhance near-field effects with minimal absorption. Similar to their metallic counterparts, dielectric oligomers consisting of two or more coupled particles are generally employed to create localized optical fields. Here we show that individual all-dielectric nanostructures, with rational designs, can produce strong electric fields with intensity enh…
A significant interest in combining plasmonics and magnetism at the nanoscale gains momentum in both photonics and magnetism sectors that are concerned with the resonant enhancement of light-magnetic-matter interaction in nanostructures. These efforts result in a considerable amount of literature, which is difficult to collect and digest in limited time. Furthermore, there is insufficient exchange of results between the two research sectors. Consequently, the goal of this review paper is to bridge this gap by presenting an overview of recent progress in the field of magneto-plasmonics from two…

All-dielectric nanophotonics is an exciting and rapidly developing area of nanooptics which utilizes the resonant behavior of high-index low-loss dielectric nanoparticles for enhancing light-matter interaction on the nanoscale. When experimental implementation of a specific all-dielectric nanostructure is an issue, two crucial factors have to be in focus: the choice of a high-index material and a fabrication method. The degree to which various effects can be enhanced relies on the dielectric response of the chosen material as well as the fabrication accuracy. Here, we make an overview of avail…
The generation of radiation from free electrons passing a grating, known as Smith-Purcell radiation, finds various applications including non-destructive beam diagnostics and tunable light sources, ranging from terahertz towards X-rays. So far, the gratings used for this purpose have been designed manually, based on human intuition and simple geometric shapes. We study the propagation properties and light-matter interactions of the focused doughnut pulses, broadband, single-cycle electromagnetic perturbations of toroidal topology first described by Hellwarth and Nouchi in 1996. We show how focused doughnuts are reflected and refracted at planar metallic and vacuum-dielectric interfaces leading to complex distortions of the field structure. We also identify the conditions under which these toroidal pulses excite dominant dynamic toroidal dipoles in spherical dielectric particles.
Photonic cavities are valued in current research owing to the multitude of linear and nonlinear effects arising from densely confined light. Cavity designs consisting of low loss dielectric materials can achieve significant light confinement, competitive with other schools of cavity design such as plasmonics. However, the basic concepts in all dielectric photonics such as anapole resonances in nanodisks have been primarily studied in high index materials such as WS2 and Si. Without additional measures, low index dielectric nanodisks struggle to achieve similar levels of light confinement. Here…
We investigate surface waves at the boundary between a semi-infinite layered metal-dielectric nanostructure cut normally to the layers and a semi-infinite dielectric. Spatial dispersion properties of such a nanostructure can be dramatically affected by coupling of surface plasmons polaritons at different metal-dielectric interfaces. As a consequence, the effective medium approach is not applicable in general. It is demonstrated that Dyakonov-like surface waves with hybrid polarization can propagate in an angular range substantially enlarged compared to conventional birefringent materials. Our …
The Purcell factor quantifies the change of the radiative decay of a dipole in an electromagnetic environment relative to free space. Designing this factor is at the heart of photonics technology, striving to develop ever smaller or less lossy optical resonators. The Purcell factor can be expressed using the electromagnetic eigenmodes of the resonators, introducing the notion of a mode volume for each mode. This approach allows to use an analytic treatment, consisting only of sums over eigenmode resonances, a so-called spectral representation. We show in the present work that the expressions f…
We propose a back-reflecting scheme in order to enhance the maximum achievable current in one micron thick crystalline silicon solar cells. We perform 3-dimensional numerical investigations of the scattering properties of metallic nanostructures located at the back side, and optimize them for enhancing absorption in the silicon layer. We validate our numerical results experimentally and also compare the absorption enhancement in the solar cell structure, both with quasi-periodic and random metallic nanostructures. We have looked at the interplay between the metallic nanostructures and an integ…
We develop a quantum-mechanical theory for Landau damping of surface plasmons in metal nanostructures larger that the characteristic length for nonlocal effects. We show that the electron surface scattering, which facilitates plasmon decay in small nanostructures, can be incorporated into the metal dielectric function on par with phonon and impurity scattering. The derived surface scattering rate is determined by the plasmon local field polarization relative to the metal-dielectric interface and is highly sensitive to the system geometry. We illustrate our model by providing analytical results…
Nonradiating sources of energy have traditionally been studied in quantum mechanics and astrophysics, while receiving a very little attention in the photonics community. These recent advances underpin novel concepts in nanophotonics, and provide a promisin…
Bulk bismuth presents outstanding optical properties, such as a giant infrared refractive index (n near 10) and a negative ultraviolet visible permittivity induced by giant interband electronic transitions. Although such properties are very appealing for applications in nanophotonics, the dielectric function of bismuth nanostructures has been scarcely studied. Here, we determine by spectroscopic ellipsometry the far infrared to ultraviolet dielectric function of pulsed laser deposited bismuth thin films with nominal thickness tBi varied from near 10 nm to several tens of nm. For tBi above 15 n…
We demonstrate a compact technique to compress electron pulses to attosecond length, while keeping the energy spread reasonably small. The technique is based on Dielectric Laser Acceleration (DLA) in nanophotonic silicon structures. Unlike previous ballistic optical microbunching demonstrations, we use a modulator-demodulator scheme to compress phase space in the time and energy coordinates. With a second stage, we show that these pulses can be coherently accelerated, producing a net energy gain of $1.5\pm0.1$ keV, which is significantly larger than the remaining energy spread of $0.88 \,_{-0.…
An optical topological transition is defined as the change in the photonic isofrequency surface around epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) frequencies which can considerably change the spontaneous emission of a quantum emitter placed near a metamaterial slab. Here, we show that due to the strong Kerr nonlinearity at ENZ frequencies, a high power pulse can induce a sudden transition in the topology of the iso-frequency dispersion curve, leading to a significant change in the transmission of propagating as well as evanescent waves through the metamaterial slab. This evanescent wave switch effect allows for …

The antenna design is robust to fabrication imperfections, such as variations in the dimensions of the dielectric perturbations and the emitter dipole location. The field-based dielectric antenna design provides an efficient free-space interface to closely packed arrays of quantum memories for …
We suggest to exploit dielectric-metal core-shell nanostructures for efficient resonant and yet broadband absorption of infrared radiation with deeply subwavelength configurations. Realizing that nanostructures would efficiently absorb radiation only when their dielectric properties match those of the environment and making use of the effective medium approach, we develop the design strategy using core-shell nanostructures with very thin shells made of poor metals, i.e., metals having real and imaginary parts of their dielectric permittivities of the same order of magnitude. Analyzing in detai…
