We study theoretically the enhancement of spontaneous emission in wire metamaterials. We analyze the dependence of the Purcell factor dependence on wire dielectric constant for both electric and magnetic dipole sources, and find an optimal value of the dielectric constant for maximizing the Purcell factor for the electric dipole. We obtain analytical expressions for the Purcell factor and also provide estimates for the Purcell factor in realistic structures operating in both microwave and optical spectral range.
In this work we develop a self-consistent approach for calculation of the Purcell factor and Lamb shift in highly dispersive hyperbolic metamaterial accounting for the effective dipole frequency shift. Also we theoretically predict the possibility of spontaneous topological transition, which occurs not due to the external change of the system parameters but only due to the Lamb shift.
The use of metamaterial as a way to mitigate the negative effects of absorption in metals on the Purcell effect in metal-dielectric structures is investigated. A layered metal-dielectric structure is considered as an anisotropic medium in the long-wavelength limit. The dispersion of the surface plasmon appearing at the boundary between such a structure and a different dielectric material, as well as the position of the peak in the local density of states are studied for various combinations of materials and filling factors of the periodic structure. The calculated frequency dependence of the P…
Single-photon and correlated two-photon sources are important elements for optical information systems. Nonlinear downconversion light sources are robust and stable emitters of single photons and entangled photon pairs. However, the rate of downconverted light emission, dictated by the properties of low-symmetry nonlinear crystals, is typically very small, leading to significant constrains in device design and integration. In this paper, we show that the principles for spontaneous emission control (i.e. Purcell effect) of isolated emitters in nanoscale structures, such as metamaterials, can be…
An optical topological transition is defined as the change in the photonic isofrequency surface around epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) frequencies which can considerably change the spontaneous emission of a quantum emitter placed near a metamaterial slab. Here, we show that due to the strong Kerr nonlinearity at ENZ frequencies, a high power pulse can induce a sudden transition in the topology of the iso-frequency dispersion curve, leading to a significant change in the transmission of propagating as well as evanescent waves through the metamaterial slab. This evanescent wave switch effect allows for …
Coherent nanoscale photon sources are of paramount importance to achieving all-optical communication. Several nanolasers smaller than the diffraction limit have been theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated using plasmonic cavities to confine optical fields. Such compact cavities exhibit large Purcell factors, thereby enhancing spontaneous emission, which feeds into the lasing mode. However, most plasmonic nanolasers reported so far have employed resonant nanostructures and therefore had the lasing restricted to the proximity of the resonance wavelength. Here, we report on an app…
We investigate numerically and experimentally the near-field response of disordered arrays comprising asymmetrically split ring resonators that exhibit strong cooperative response. Our simulations treat the unit cell split ring resonators as discrete pointlike oscillators with associated electric and magnetic point dipole radiation, while the strong cooperative radiative coupling between the different split rings is fully included at all orders. The methods allow to calculate local field and Purcell factor enhancement arising from the collective electric and magnetic excitations. We find subst…

We develop a theory of nonlocal homogenization for metamaterial consisting of parallel metallic wires with dielectric coating. It is demonstrated that manipulation of dielectric contrast between wire dielectric shell and host material results in switching of metamaterial dispersion regime from elliptic to the hyperbolic one, i.e. the topological transition takes place. We confirm our theoretical predictions by full-wave numerical simulations.
We study the optical properties of quantum dipole emitters coupled to hyperbolic metamaterial nano-resonators using a semi-analytical quasinormal mode approach. We show that coupling to metamaterial nano-resonators can lead to significant Purcell enhancements that are nearly an order of magnitude larger than those of plasmonic resonators with comparable geometry. However, the associated single photon output $β$-factors are extremely low (around 10$\%$), far smaller than those of comparable sized metallic resonators (70$\%$). Using a quasinormal mode expansion of the photon Green function, we d…
We investigate the optical properties of sub-wavelength layered metal/dielectric structures, also known as hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs), using exact analytical Kronig Penney (KP) model. We show that hyperbolic isofrequency surfaces exist for all combinations of layer permittivities and thicknesses, and the largest Purcell enhancements (PE) of spontaneous radiation are achieved away from the nominally hyperbolic region. Detailed comparison of field distributions, dispersion curves, and Purcell factors (PF) between the HMMs and Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPPs) guided modes in metal/dielectri…
Here, we present an overview of a first principles homogenization theory of periodic metamaterials. It is shown that in a rather general context it is possible to formally introduce effective parameters that describe the time evolution of macroscopic (slowly-varying in space) initial states of the electromagnetic field using an effective medium formalism. The theory is applied to different types of "wire metamaterials" characterized by a strong spatial dispersion in the long wavelength limit. It is highlighted that the spatial dispersion may tailor in unique ways the wave phenomena in wire met…
Light-matter interactions can be dramatically modified by the surrounding environment. Here we report on the first experimental observation of molecular spontaneous emission inside a highly nonlocal metamaterial based on a plasmonic nanorod assembly. We show that the emission process is dominated not only by the topology of its local effective medium dispersion, but also by the nonlocal response of the composite, so that metamaterials with different geometric parameters but the same local effective medium properties exhibit different Purcell factors. A record-high enhancement of a decay rate i…
We propose and investigate a new type of metamaterial structure composing of several interpenetrating wire meshes. Calculated band structures show that they exhibit index ellipsoids locating at nonzero k-point in long wavelength limit. We can comprehend these quasistatic modes by Poison's equation and find these modes do not rely on the detailed geometry of the wires but the connectivities of the wires. We can engineer the locations of index ellipsoid by designing the connectivities of the wire meshes.
Manipulation of radiation is required for enabling a span of electromagnetic applications. Since properties of antennas and scatterers are very sensitive to a surrounding environment, macroscopic artificially created materials are good candidates for shaping their characteristics. In particular, metamaterials enable controlling both dispersion and density of electromagnetic states, available for scattering from an object. As the result, properly designed electromagnetic environment could govern waves' phenomena. Here electromagnetic properties of scattering dipoles, situated inside a wire medi…
Bound state in the continuum (BIC) is a mathematical concept with an infinite radiative quality factor (Q) that exists only in an ideal infinite array. It was first proposed in quantum mechanics, and extended to general wave phenomena such as acoustic, water, elastic, and electromagnetic waves. In photonics, it is essential to achieve high Q resonances for enhanced light-mater interactions that could enable low-threshold lasers, ultrasensitive sensors, and optical tweezers. Here, we demonstrate dual bound states in the continuum in a subwavelength planar metamaterial cavity that reveal symmetr…

Multilayer hyperbolic metamaterials consisting of alternating metal and dielectric layers have important applications in spontaneous emission enhancement. In contrast to the conventional choice of at least dozens of layers in multilayer structures to achieve tunable Purcell effect on quantum emitters, our numerical calculations reveal that multilayers with fewer layers and thinner layers would outperform in Purcell effect. These discoveries are attributed to the negative contributions by an increasing layer number to the imaginary part of the reflection coefficient, and the stronger coupling b…
A novel mechanism to realize dynamically tunable electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) analogue in the terahertz (THz) regime is proposed. By putting the electrically controllable monolayer graphene under the dark resonator, the amplitude of the EIT resonance in the metal-based metamaterial can be modulated substantially via altering the Fermi level of graphene. The amplitude modulation can be attributed to the change in the damping rate of the dark mode caused by the recombination effect of the conductive graphene. This work provides an alternative way to achieve tunable slow light e…
Electromagnetic waves in vacuum and most materials have transverse polarization. Longitudinal electromagnetic waves with electric field parallel to wave vector are very rare and appear under special conditions in a limited class of media, for example in plasma. In this work, we study the dispersion properties of an easy-to-manufacture metamaterial consisting of two three-dimensional cubic lattices of connected metallic wires inserted one into another, also known as an interlaced wire medium. It is shown that the metamaterial supports longitudinal waves at extremely wide frequency band from ver…
Hyperbolic Metamaterials, as a non-magnetic anisotropic artificial structure, show metal properties in one direction and dielectric behavior in orthogonal directions. The proposed hyperbolic metamaterial filter in this project is designed with the metal wire mesh perpendicular to the alternative layers of dielectric materials, keeps TM center wavelength unchanged for the different angle of incident light in MDIR regime. The geometric size of this nanostructure is smaller than the working wavelength and supports big wavevectors due to hyperbolic dispersion. In contrast with conventional Bragg s…
