This paper shows how to analyze plasmonic metal-insulator-metal waveguides using the full modal structure of these guides. The analysis applies to all frequencies, particularly including the near infrared and visible spectrum, and to a wide range of sizes, including nanometallic structures. We use the approach here specifically to analyze waveguide junctions. We show that the full modal structure of the metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguides--which consists of real and complex discrete eigenvalue spectra, as well as the continuous spectrum--forms a complete basis set. We provide the derivation of these modes using the techniques developed for Sturm-Liouville and generalized eigenvalue equations. We demonstrate the need to include all parts of the spectrum to have a complete set of basis vectors to describe scattering within MIM waveguides with the mode-matching technique. We numerically compare the mode-matching formulation with finite-difference frequency-domain analysis and find very good agreement between the two for modal scattering at symmetric MIM waveguide junctions. We touch upon the similarities between the underlying mathematical structure of the MIM waveguide and the PT symmetric quantum mechanical pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonians. The rich set of modes that the MIM waveguide supports forms a canonical example against which other more complicated geometries can be compared. Our work here encompasses the microwave results, but extends also to waveguides with real metals even at infrared and optical frequencies.
Among various plasmonic waveguides, the metal-insulator-metal (MIM) type is the most promising for true subwavelength photonic integration. To date, many photonic devices based on MIM waveguides have been investigated, including resonators. However, most of the reported MIM ring resonators suffer from low extinction ratios. In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of the intrinsic reasons for the low performance of MIM ring resonators, and give the analytical transmission relation for a universal all-pass ring resonator which has coupling loss. Based on the analysis we propose the pl…
In this paper the experimental demonstration of a Silicon-on-Insulator Reflective Arrayed Waveguide Grating (R-AWG) is reported. The device employs one Sagnac loop mirror per arm in the array, built with a 1x2 input/outputs, 50:50 splitting ratio, Multimode Interference coupler, for total reflection. The spectral responses obtained are compared to those of regular AWGs fabricated in the same die.
This Letter introduces a Semiconductor-Under-Insulator (SUI) technology in InP for designing strip waveguides that interface InP photonic crystal membrane structures. Strip waveguides in InP-SUI are supported under an atomic layer deposited insulator layer in contrast to strip waveguides in silicon supported on insulator. We show a substantial improvement in optical transmission when using InP-SUI strip waveguides interfaced with localized photonic crystal membrane structures when compared with extended photonic crystal waveguide membranes. Furthermore, SUI makes available various fiber-coupli…
We theoretically and experimentally investigate type II second harmonic generation in III-V-on-insulator wire waveguides. We show that the propagation direction plays a crucial role and that longitudinal field components can be leveraged for robust and efficient conversion. We predict that the maximum theoretical conversion is larger than that of type I second harmonic generation for similar waveguide dimensions and reach an experimental conversion efficiency of 12 %/W, limited by the propagation loss.
We propose a practical and efficient solution for the coupling of light from integrated single-mode waveguides to supercollimating planar photonic crystals on conventional silicon-on-insulator platforms. The device consists of a rib waveguide, designed to sustain spatially extended single-modes and matched to a supercollimating photonic crystal, which has been truncated at its boundary to improve impedance matching between the two photonic components. Three-dimensional simulations show transmission efficiencies up to 96 % and reflections below 0.2 % at wavelengths close to 1.55 microns. This a…
By combining analytical and numerical approaches, we theoretically investigate the effect of fabrication imperfections, e.g. roughness at metal interfaces, on nanometer metal-insulator-metal waveguides supporting slow gap-plasmon modes. Realistic devices with vapor deposition- and chemically-grown metal films are considered. We obtain quantitative predictions for the attenuations induced by absorption and by backscattering, and analytically derive how both attenuations scale with respect to the group velocity. Depending on the material parameters and fabrication quality, roughness-induced back…
The phenomenon of a dispersion bandgap opening between low-loss spectral windows of odd and even plasmonic modes in a layered insulator-metal-insulator plasmonic waveguide is introduced. Beginning with a three layer plasmonic dispersion relation, we explain and numerically confirm the existence of the plasmonic bandgap, and investigate its properties at a very broad spectrum range from ultraviolet to far infrared. The nature of the observed bandgap opening is explained in terms of the near-zero value of an effective permittivity for plasmonic modes in the waveguide. The adjustment of the plasm…
We investigate the effects of nonlocal response on the surface-plasmon polariton guiding properties of the metal-insulator (MI), metal-insulator-metal (MIM), and insulator-metal-insulator (IMI) waveguides. The nonlocal effects are described by a linearized hydrodynamic model, which includes the Thomas-Fermi internal kinetic energy of the free electrons in the metal. We derive the nonlocal dispersion relations of the three waveguide structures taking into account also retardation and interband effects, and examine the delicate interplay between nonlocal response and absorption losses in the met…
We report near infrared optical amplification in gold diffused silicon-on-insulator waveguides by visible optical pumping. More then 30dB/cm gain was measured for a light carrier at a wavelength of 1.55 microns
We theoretically explore the possibility of reducing the propagation loss in a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide, using mode combinations to achieve wall-avoiding field distributions along a certain propagation length. We present analytical results for several waveguides showing notable loss reduction, and we discuss the tradeoffs between low loss and high confinement present in this technique.
One-way edge states at the surface of photonic topological insulators are of significant interest for communications, nonlinear and quantum optics. Moreover, when reciprocity is broken in a photonic topological insulator, these states provide protection against disorder, which is of particular importance for slow light applications. Achieving such a one-way edge state, however, requires the construction of a two-dimensional structure. Here, we show how unidiriectional Floquet bands can arise in purely one-dimensional, adiabatically-modulated dynamic systems, in contrasts with the higher dimens…
We demonstrate full integration of vertical optical ring resonators with silicon nanophotonic waveguides on silicon-on-insulator substrates to accomplish a significant step towards 3D photonic integration. The on-chip integration is realized by rolling up 2D differentially strained TiO2 nanomembranes into 3D microtube cavities on a nanophotonic microchip. The integration configuration allows for out of plane optical coupling between the in-plane nanowaveguides and the vertical microtube cavities as a compact and mechanically stable optical unit, which could enable refined vertical light transf…
Topological insulators subject to a time-symmetry-breaking perturbation are predicted to display a magneto-electric effect that causes the electric and magnetic induction fields to mix at the material's surface. This effect induces polarization rotations of between ~1-10 mrad per interface in incident plane-polarized light normal to a multilayered structure. Here we show, theoretically and numerically, that, using a waveguide geometry with a topological insulator guide layer and dielectric cladding, it is possible to achieve rotations of between ~100-1000 mrad and generate an elliptical polari…
Flexible control of the modal confinement in silicon photonic waveguides is an appealing feature for many applications, including sensing and hybrid integration of active materials. In most cases, strip waveguides are the preferred solution to maximize the light interaction with the waveguide surroundings. However, the only two degrees of freedom in Si strip waveguides are the width and thickness, resulting in limited flexibility in evanescent field control. Here, we propose and demonstrate a new strategy that exploits metamaterial engineering of the waveguide core and cladding to control the …
The emergence of strong-field nanoplasmonics brings extreme laser field-matter interaction into the realm of nanoscale science, unveiling exciting new physics. Highly nonlinear interaction is enabled by tightly confined electric fields in nanoplasmonic structures, permitting use of optical fields from low-power laser oscillators. Here, we report the first demonstration of visible 517nm third harmonic generation in ultracompact nanoplasmonic waveguides on a silicon-on-insulator platform at an unprecedented conversion efficiency of ~10^{-5}. Exponential growth of broadband white light generation…
We demonstrate fabrication of single-mode optical waveguides on lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) by optical patterning combined with chemo-mechanical polishing. The fabricated LNOI waveguides have a nearly symmetric mode profile of a mode field size of ~2.5 micron (full-width at half maximum). We develop a high-precision measurement approach by which the single mode waveguides are characterized to have a propagation loss of ~0.042 dB/cm.
We study the dispersion relations in slow-light waveguide structures consisting of coupled microdisk resonators. A group theoretical analysis of the symmetry properties of the propagating modes reveals an interesting phenomenon: The degeneracy of the CW and CCW rotating modes is removed, giving rise to two distinct transmission bands. This effect induces symmetry-based dispersion which may limit usable bandwidth of such structures. The properties of this band splitting and its impact on CROW performance for optical communications are studied in detail.
There has been increasing interest in making the photonic devices more and more compact in the integrated photonics industry, and one of the important questions for manufacturers and design engineers is how to quantify the effect of the finite cladding thickness on the modal confinement loss of photonic waveguides. This requires at least six to seven digits accuracy for the computation of propagation constant $β$ since the modal confinement loss is proportional to the imaginary part of $β$ that is six to seven orders of magnitude smaller than its real part by the industrial standard. In this p…
We study the spontaneous emission rate of a dipole emitter in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric environment of two coupled waveguides using the reciprocity approach generalized to non-orthogonal eigenmodes of non-Hermitian systems. Considering emission to the guided modes, we define and calculate the modal Purcell factor composed of contributions of independent and interfering non-orthogonal modes leading to the emergence of cross-mode terms in the Purcell factor. We reveal that the closed-form expression for the modal Purcell factor within the coupled mode theory slightly alters for the non-Hermitian …
We study the symmetric properties of waveguide modes in presence of gain/losses, anisotropy/bianisotropy, or continuous/discrete rotational symmetry. We provide a comprehensive approach to identity the modal symmetry by constructing a $4\times4$ waveguide Hamiltonian and searching the symmetric operation in association with the corresponding waveguides. We classify the chiral/time reversal/parity/parity time/rotational symmetry for different waveguides, and provide the criterion for the aforementioned symmetry operations. Lastly, we provide examples to illustrate how the symmetry operations ca…
Hyperbolic Meta-Materials~(HMMs) are anisotropic materials with permittivity tensor that has both positive and negative eigenvalues. Here we report that by using a type II HMM as cladding material, a waveguide which only supports higher order modes can be achieved, while the lower order modes become leaky and are absorbed in the HMM cladding. This counter intuitive property can lead to novel application in optical communication and photonic integrated circuit. The loss in our HMM-Insulator-HMM~(HIH) waveguide is smaller than that of similar guided mode in a Metal-Insulator-Metal~(MIM) waveguid…
Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) waveguides, as an emerging technology, have proven to offer a promising platform for integrated optics, due to their strong optical confinement comparable to silicon on insulator (SOI) waveguides, while possessing the versatile properties of lithium niobate, such as high electro-optic coefficients. In this paper, we show that mode hybridization, a phenomenon widely found in vertically asymmetric waveguides, can be efficiently modulated in an LNOI ridge waveguide by electro-optic effect, leading to a polarization mode converter with 97% efficiency. Moreover, …
We model second harmonic generation in subwavelength III-V-on-insulator waveguides. The large index contrast induces strong longitudinal electric field components that play an important role in the nonlinear conversion. We show that many different waveguide dimensions are suitable for efficient conversion of a fundamental quasi-TE pump mode around the 1550 nm telecommunication wavelength to a higher-order second harmonic mode.
As an analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) has been realized both in plasmonic metamaterial and waveguide structures. Via near-field coupling within unit cells, PIT with broadband could be produced by plasmonic metamaterials, which, however, has not been realized in on-chip plasmonic waveguide structures. Here, we introduce broadband PIT based on a plasmonic metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide system. Utilizing the direct coupling structure, PIT emerges based on an easy-fabricated structure without gap. By tuning coupling distance, th…
We analyze wave propagation in coupled planar waveguides, pointing specific attention to modal cross-talk and out-of-plane scattering in quasi-planar photonics. An algorithm capable of accurate numerical computation of wave coupling in arrays of planar structures is developed and illustrated on several examples of plasmonic and volumetric waveguides. An analytical approach to reduce or completely eliminate scattering and modal cross-talk in planar waveguides with anisotropic materials is also presented.
We demonstrate on-chip light amplification with integrated optical waveguide fabricated on erbium-doped thin film lithium niobate on insulator (TFLNOI) using the photolithography assisted chemo-mechanical etching (PLACE) technique. A maximum internal net gain of 18 dB in the small-signal-gain regime is measured at the peak emission wavelength of 1530 nm for a waveguide length of 3.6 cm, indicating a differential gain per unit length of 5 dB/cm. This work paves the way to the monolithic integration of diverse active and passive photonic components on the TFLNOI platform.
We report a 1D planar optical waveguide with transverse distribution of inhomogeneous loss profile, which exhibits an exceptional point (EP). The waveguide hosts two leaky resonant modes; where the interaction between them in the vicinity of the EP is controlled by proper adjustment of the inhomogeneity in attenuation profile only. We study the adiabatic dynamics of propagation constants of the coupled modes by quasi-static encirclement of control parameters around the EP. Realizing such an encirclement with the inhomogeneous loss distribution along the direction of light propagation, we repor…
We introduce phase-change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) into metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide systems to realize chipscale plasmonic modulators and switches in the telecommunication band. Benefitting from the high contrast of optical properties between amorphous and crystalline GST, the three proposed structures can act as reconfigurable and non-volatile modulators and switches with excellent modulation depth 14 dB and fast response time in nanosecond, meanwhile possessing small footprints, simple frameworks and easy fabrication. This work provides new solutions to design active devices in MIM…
Optical resonances in 1D photonic crystal microcavities are investigated numerically using finite-element light scattering and eigenmode solvers. The results are validated by comparison to experimental and theoretical findings from the literature. The influence of nanometer-scale geometry variations on the resonator performance is studied. Limiting factors to ultra-high Q-factor performance are identified.
Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguides with different geometries have been employed to design various integrated optical components. Reducing the bending radius of the SOI waveguides with low bending loss is essential in minimizing the footprint of light-wave circuits. The propagating mode is less confined in the core of the ultra-thin SOI waveguide and penetrates to substrate and cladding, leading to higher bending loss compared with conventional SOI waveguide with the thicker guiding layer. While various bending mechanisms have been utilized to reduce the bending loss of conventional SOI wave…
We develop a technique for realizing lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) waveguides of a multi-centimeter-length with a propagation loss as low as 0.027 dB/cm. Our technique relies on patterning a chromium (Cr) thin film coated on the top surface of LNOI into a hard mask with a femtosecond laser followed by the chemo-mechanical polishing for structuring the LNOI into the waveguides. The surface roughness on the waveguides is determined to be 0.452 nm with an atomic force microscope (AFM). The approach is compatible with other surface patterning technologies such as optical and electron beam li…

We analytically derive a rigorous expression for the relative impedance ratio between two photonic structures based on their electromagnetic interaction. Our approach generalizes the physical meaning of the impedance to a measure for the reciprocity-based overlap of eigenmodes. The consistence with known cases in the radiofrequency and optical domain is shown. The analysis reveals where the applicability of simple circuit parameters ends and how the impedance can be interpreted beyond this point. We illustrate our approach by successfully describing a Bragg reflector that terminates an insulat…
The structure of an optical waveguide determines the characteristics of its guided modes, such as their spatial profile and group index. General features are shared by modes regardless of the waveguiding structure; for example, modal dispersion is inevitable in multimode waveguides, every mode experiences group-velocity dispersion, and higher-order modes are usually slower than their lower-order counterparts. We show here that such trends can be fundamentally altered -- altogether severing the link between modal order and group index hybrid and eliminating dispersion -- by exploiting hybrid gu…
We experimentally demonstrate a broadband, fabrication tolerant, CMOS compatible compact silicon waveguide taper (34.2 um) in silicon-on-insulator wire waveguides. The taper works on multi-mode interference along the length of the taper. A single taper design has a broadband operation with coupling efficiency >70% over 700 nm that can be used in O, C and L-band. The compact taper is highly tolerant to fabrication variations; >100 nm change in the taper and end waveguide width varies the taper transmission by <5%. The footprint of the device i.e. taper along with the linear gratings is ~ 442 m2…
Nanoscale generation of individual photons in confined geometries is an exciting research field aiming at exploiting localized electromagnetic fields for light manipulation. One of the outstanding challenges of photonic systems combining emitters with nanostructured media is the selective channelling of photons emitted by embedded sources into specific optical modes and their transport at distant locations in integrated systems. Here, we show that soft-matter nanofibers, electrospun with embedded emitters, combine subwavelength field localization and large broadband near-field coupling with lo…
A novel design of large bandwidth, fabrication tolerant, CMOS-compatible compact tapers (15 um) have been proposed and experimentally demonstrated in silicon-on-insulator. The proposed taper along with linear grating couplers for spot-size conversion exhibits no degradation in the coupling efficiency compared to a standard focusing grating in 1550 nm band. A single taper design has a broadband operation over 600 nm that can be used in O, C and L-band. The proposed compact taper is highly tolerant to fabrication variations; 80 nm change in the taper width and 200 nm in end waveguide width varie…
We demonstrate a silicon photonic platform using thin buried oxide silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrates using localized substrate removal. We show high confinement silicon strip waveguides, micro-ring resonators and nanotapers using this technology. Propagation losses for the waveguides using the cutback method are 3.88 dB/cm for the quasi-TE mode and 5.06 dB/cm for the quasi-TM mode. Ring resonators with a loaded quality factor (Q) of 46,500 for the quasi-TM mode and intrinsic Q of 148,000 for the quasi-TE mode have been obtained. This process will enable the integration of photonic structur…
We investigate the group velocity distribution of waveguide modes in the presence of disorder. The results are based on extensive numerical simulations of disordered optical waveguides using statistical methods. We observe that the narrowest distribution of group velocities is obtained in the presence of a small amount of disorder; therefore, the modal dispersion of an optical pulse is minimized when there is only a slight disorder in the waveguide. The absence of disorder or the presence of a large amount of disorder can result in a large modal dispersion due to the broadening of the distribu…
In this paper, we propose a method for the generation of higher dimensional modal entanglement through type II spontaneous parametric down conversion process using a three waveguide directional coupler in a periodically poled lithium niobate substrate. We show that by a proper design, it is possible to achieve an output state of two photons occupying three different spatial modes. The advantage of using such waveguide structure is its flexibility and the design space availability to achieve desired characteristics of the photon pairs generated in the down conversion process
Dynamical parametric encirclement around an Exceptional Point (EP) and corresponding asymmetric state transfer phenomenon have attracted considerable attention recently. In this context, beyond the reported time-asymmetric state dynamics around a second-order EP (EP2) in a two-level system, the investigation of similar state dynamics around a third-order EP (EP3) in a multi-state system, having comparably complex topology with rich physics, is lacking. Here, we report a fabrication-feasible few-mode planar optical waveguide with a customized gain-loss profile and investigate the effect of dyna…
Nonlinear frequency conversion plays a crucial role in advancing the functionality of next-generation optical systems. Portable metrology references and quantum networks will demand highly efficient second-order nonlinear devices, and the intense nonlinear interactions of nanophotonic waveguides can be leveraged to meet these requirements. Here we demonstrate second harmonic generation (SHG) in GaAs-on-insulator waveguides with unprecedented efficiency of 40 W$^{-1}$ for a single-pass device. This result is achieved by minimizing the propagation loss and optimizing phase-matching. We investiga…
We study the generation of biphoton modally entangled states in such waveguide structures that lead to spectrum broadening. The process of spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) has been considered for the biphoton generation. The main subject of our study is the dependence of the biphoton spectra on the structure spatial characteristics. The representation of the core structures as definite assembles of nonlinear layers allows us to find analytical description for biphoton spectrum. We show that chirped biphotons with discrete as well as continuous spectra can be generated depending on…
We demonstrate waveguide-integrated superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors on thin-film lithium niobate (LN). Using a 250 um-long NbN superconducting nanowire lithographically defined on top of a 125 um-long LN nanowaveguide, on-chip detection efficiency of 46% is realized with simultaneous high performance in dark count rate and timing jitter. As LN possesses high second-order nonlinear \c{hi}(2) and electro-optic properties, an efficient single-photon detector on thin-film LN opens up the possibility to construct small scale fully-integrated quantum photonic chip which includes sin…
The dispersion of a three-way waveguide is engineered to exhibit exceptional modal characteristics. Two coupled waveguides with Parity-Time (PT) symmetry have been previously demonstrated to exhibit second order exceptional points of degeneracy (EPDs). In this work, we introduce and investigate a particular class of EPDs, applicable from radio frequency to optical wavelengths, whereby three coupled waveguides satisfy Glide-Time (GT) symmetry to exhibit a third order modal degeneracy with a real-valued wavenumber. GT symmetry involves glide symmetry of lossless/gainless components of the wavegu…
Layered topological insulators, for example, Bi$_2$Se$_3$ are optically hyperbolic materials in a range of THz frequencies. Such materials possess deeply subdiffractional, highly directional collective modes: hyperbolic phonon-polaritons. In thin crystals the dispersion of such modes is split into discrete subbands and is strongly influenced by electron surface states. If the surface states are doped, then hybrid collective modes result from coupling of the phonon-polaritons with surface plasmons. The strength of the hybridization can be controlled by an external gate that varies the chemical …
We numerically study silicon waveguides on silica showing that it is possible to simultaneously guide optical and acoustic waves in the technologically important silicon on insulator (SOI) material system. Thin waveguides, or fins, exhibit geometrically softened mechanical modes at gigahertz frequencies with phase velocities below the Rayleigh velocity in glass, eliminating acoustic radiation losses. We propose slot waveguides on glass with telecom optical frequencies and strong radiation pressure forces resulting in Brillouin gains on the order of 500 and 50,000 1/(Wm) for backward and forwar…
Optical frequency combs have become a very powerful tool in metrology and beyond thanks to their ability to link radio frequencies with optical frequencies via a process known as self-referencing. Typical self-referencing is accomplished in two steps: the generation of an octave-spanning supercontinuum spectrum and the frequency-doubling of one part of that spectrum. Traditionally, these two steps have been performed by two separate optical components. With the advent of photonic integrated circuits, the combination of these two steps has become possible in a single small and monolithic chip. …
