One-way edge states at the surface of photonic topological insulators are of significant interest for communications, nonlinear and quantum optics. Moreover, when reciprocity is broken in a photonic topological insulator, these states provide protection against disorder, which is of particular importance for slow light applications. Achieving such a one-way edge state, however, requires the construction of a two-dimensional structure. Here, we show how unidiriectional Floquet bands can arise in purely one-dimensional, adiabatically-modulated dynamic systems, in contrasts with the higher dimensionality needed in topological insulators. We also show that, using realistic experimental parameters, the concept can be implemented using both a coupled-resonator optical waveguide and a photonic crystal waveguide. Furthermore, we illustrate the associated protection against disorder, and find it to be of a novel nature when compared to Floquet topological insulators.
We show that anisotropic planar anti-guiding waveguide structures with two radiation channels towards the surrounding cladding materials can support unidirectional guided resonances (UGRs), where radiation is cancelled in one of the radiation channels and redirected into the other. Their formation is subtle as it requires breaking the so-called polar anisotropy-symmetry of the structures. Then, UGRs appear at specific wavelengths and light propagation directions, are robust, and are characterised by phase singularities in the channel in which radiation is cancelled. The mechanism we describe a…
We present an inverse design approach to significantly improve the figures-of-merit for chiral photon elements and quantum emitters in topological photonic crystal slab waveguides. Beginning with a topological waveguide mode with a group index of approximately 10 and a maximum forwards or backwards Purcell factor at a chiral point of less than 0.5, we perform optimizations of the directional Purcell factor. We use a fully three dimensional guided-mode expansion method to efficiently calculate waveguide band dispersion properties and modes, while automatic differentiation is employed to calcula…
Subwavelength plasmonic waveguides show the unique ability of strongly localizing (down to the nanoscale) and guiding light. These structures are intrinsically two-way optical communication channels, providing two opposite light propagation directions. As a consequence, when light is coupled to these planar integrated devices directly from the top (or bottom) surface using strongly focused beams, it is equally shared into the two opposite propagation directions. Here, we show that symmetry can be broken by using incident circularly polarized light, on the basis of a spin-orbital angular moment…
Unidirectional wave propagation in nonreciprocal structures enables exciting opportunities to control and enhance wave-matter interactions in extreme ways. Within this context, here we investigate the possibility of using terminated unidirectional plasmonic waveguides to enhance typically weak nonlinear effects by orders of magnitude. We theoretically demonstrate remarkable levels of electric field enhancement and confinement (field hot-spots) when the unidirectional waveguiding structure is terminated with a suitable boundary that fully stops the one-way mode. Such a large field enhancement, …
Vortices carrying quantized topological charges have potential application in information processing. In this work, we investigate vortex carriers and waveguides in microcavity polariton condensates, nonresonantly excited by a homogeneous pump with intensity grooves. An intensity groove with a ring shape in the pump gives rise to dark-ring states of the condensate with a $π$-phase jump, akin to dark solitons. The dark-ring states can be destroyed by a stronger density of the surrounding condensate and reduce into vortex-antivortex pairs. Multiple vortex-pair states are found to be stable in th…
The introduction of topology unravels a new chapter of physics. Topological systems provide unique edge/interfacial quantum states which are expected to contribute to the development of novel spintronics and open the door to robust quantum computation. Optical systems can also benefit from topology. Engineering locally in real space a honeycomb photonic crystal with double Dirac cone in its photonic dispersion, topology transition in photonic band structure is induced and a pseudospin unidirectional optical channel is created and demonstrated by the backscattering immune electromagnetic transp…
In this work, we propose an approach for the design of a waveguide structure that allows for efficient and highly asymmetric coupling of the quantum sources with circularly polarized transition dipole moments to the guided mode of the structure. The approach is based on the mixing of the two quasi-degenerate modes of a periodic waveguide with an auxiliary single-mode waveguide leading to the formation of the dispersion with a stationary inflection point and consequently to the high coupling efficiency of this mode with a dipole source. We show that the distribution of the field polarization in…
A discrete analogue of the dynamical (Kapitza) trapping effect, known for classical and quantum particles in rapidly oscillating potentials, is proposed for light waves in modulated graded-index waveguide lattices. As in the non-modulated waveguide lattice a graded-index potential can confine light at either normal or Bragg angle incidence, periodic modulation of the potential in the longitudinal direction enables to trap optical beams at both normal and Bragg incidence angles.
We numerically investigate the light beam propagation in periodic waveguide arrays which are elaborately modulated with certain structures. We find that the light beam may split, coalesce, deflect, and be localized during propagation in these spatially modulated waveguide arrays. All the phenomena originate from Bloch oscillations, and supply possible method for fabricating on-chip beam splitters and beam combiners.
In this work, we investigate the properties of four-wave mixing Bragg scattering in a configuration that employs orthogonally polarized pumps in a birefringent waveguide. This configuration enables a large signal conversion bandwidth, and allows strongly unidirectional frequency conversion as undesired Bragg-scattering processes are suppressed by waveguide birefringence. Moreover, we show that this form of four-wave mixing Bragg scattering preserves the (arbitrary) signal pulse shape, even when driven by pulsed pumps.
We theoretically investigate light propagation in two periodically modulated nonlinear waveguides with certain propagation constant detuning between two guides. By slowly varying the amplitude of modulation, we can steer the light to the desired output waveguide when equal amounts of lights are launched into each waveguide. We also reveal that the light propagation dynamics depends sensitively on the detuning between two guides. Our findings can be explained qualitatively by means of adiabatic navigation of the extended nonlinear Floquet states.
Photonic crystal waveguides are known to support C-points - point-like polarisation singularities with local chirality. Such points can couple with dipole-like emitters to produce highly directional emission, from which spin-photon entanglers can be built. Much is made of the promise of using slow-light modes to enhance this light-matter coupling. Here we explore the transition from travelling to standing waves for two different photonic crystal waveguide designs. We find that time-reversal symmetry and the reciprocal nature of light places constraints on using C-points in the slow-light regim…
Scalable quantum technologies require faithful conversion between matter qubits storing the quantum information and photonic qubits carrying the information in integrated circuits and waveguides. We demonstrate that the electromagnetic field chirality which arises in nanophotonic waveguides leads to unidirectional emission from an embedded quantum dot quantum emitter, with resultant in-plane transfer of matter-qubit (spin) information. The chiral behavior occurs despite the non-chiral geometry and material of the waveguides. Using dot registration techniques we achieve a quantum emitter determ…
Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) waveguides, as an emerging technology, have proven to offer a promising platform for integrated optics, due to their strong optical confinement comparable to silicon on insulator (SOI) waveguides, while possessing the versatile properties of lithium niobate, such as high electro-optic coefficients. In this paper, we show that mode hybridization, a phenomenon widely found in vertically asymmetric waveguides, can be efficiently modulated in an LNOI ridge waveguide by electro-optic effect, leading to a polarization mode converter with 97% efficiency. Moreover, …
We prove the possibility of achieving unidirectional edge modes in time-modulated supercell structures. Such finite structures consist of two trimers repeated periodically. Because of their symmetry, they admit degenerate edge eigenspaces. When the trimers are time-modulated with two opposite orientations, the degenerate eigenspace splits into two one-dimensional eigenspaces described by an analytical formula, each corresponds to a mode which is localized at one edge of the structure. Our results on the localization and stability of these edge modes with respect to fluctuations in the time-mod…
We theoretically propose a synthetic frequency dimension scheme to control the spectrum of a light beam propagating through an array of evanescently coupled waveguides modulated in time by a propagating sound wave via the acousto-optical effect. Configurations are identified where the emerging two-dimensional synthetic space-frequency lattice displays a non-trivial topological band structure. The corresponding chiral edge states can be exploited to manipulate the frequency spectrum of an incident beam in a robust way. In contrast to previous works, our proposal is not based on discrete high-Q …
We report a quantum-dot single-photon source (QD SPS) hybrid integrated on a silicon waveguide embedding a photonic crystal mirror, which reflects photons and enables efficient unidirectional output from the waveguide. The silicon waveguide is constituted of a subwavelength grating so as to maintain the high efficiency even under the presence of stacking misalignment accompanied by hybrid integration processes. Experimentally, we assembled the hybrid photonic structure by transfer printing, and demonstrated single-photon generation from a QD and its unidirectional output from the waveguide. Th…
We demonstrate that a photonic gauge potential, which arises from the phase degree of freedom in dynamic refractive-index modulation and hence is achormatic, can be used to achieve a broadband optical switch using the configuration of a photonic Aharonov-Bohm interferometer (ABI). The resulting ABI switch has a far larger bandwidth and lower cross talk than the conventional Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Using coupled-mode theory and full-wave numerical modeling, we compare the response of the two interferometers in the presence of nonidealities. Our results indicate the importance of the photon…
Single-photon transport in non-ideal chiral photon-atom interaction structures generally contains information backflow and thus limits the capabilities to transfer information between distant emitters in cascaded quantum networks. Here, in the non-ideal chiral case, a V -type atom coupled to a waveguide is proposed to realize completely unidirectional transmission of the single photons in a superposition state of different frequencies. A microwave field is introduced to drive the two excited states of the atom and results in photon conversion between two transitions. By adjusting the Rabi freq…
We predict analytically and confirm with numerical simulations that inter-mode dispersion in nanowire waveguide arrays can be tailored through periodic waveguide bending, facilitating flexible spatio-temporal reshaping without break-up of femtosecond pulses. This approach allows simulta- neous and independent control of temporal dispersion and spatial diffraction that are often strongly connected in nanophotonic structures.
We study propagation of light in nonlinear diffraction-managed photonic lattices created with arrays of periodically-curved coupled optical waveguides which were fabricated using femtosecond laser writing in silica glass, and titanium indiffusion in LiNbO3 crystals. We identify different regimes of the nonlinear propagation of light beams depending on the input power, and present the first experimental observation of diffraction-managed solitons, which are formed as a result of the interplay between the engineered beam diffraction and nonlinear self-focusing or defocusing. We observe that in s…
A method for realizing asymmetric (one-way) transmission of discretized light in modulated, linear and purely passive optical lattices is suggested, which exploits the idea of unidirectional coherent perfect absorption. The system consists of a linear photonic lattice of coupled resonators or waveguides, side coupled to a chain of lossy elements, in which light can avoid the occupation of the dissipative sites when propagating in one way, but not in the opposite one. Non-reciprocity requires modulation of the resonator/waveguide parameters, realizing a dissipative optical Aharonov-Bohm diode w…
We suggest a novel concept of diffraction management in waveguide arrays and predict the existence of discrete gap solitons that possess the properties of both conventional discrete and Bragg grating solitons. We demonstrate that both the soliton velocity and propagation direction can be controlled by varying the input light intensity.
We consider evolution of multichannel excitations in longitudinally modulated waveguide arrays where refractive index either oscillates out-of-phase in all neighboring waveguides or when it is modulated in phase in several central waveguides surrounded by out-of-phase oscillating neighbors. Both types of modulations allow resonant inhibition of light tunneling, but only the modulation of latter type conserves the internal structure of multichannel excitations. We show that parameter regions where light tunneling inhibition is possible depend on the symmetry and structure of multichannel excita…
We address light propagation in segmented waveguide arrays where the refractive index is longitudinally modulated with an out-of-phase modulation in adjacent waveguides, so that the coupling strength varies along propagation direction. Thus in resonant segments coupling may be inhibited hence light remains localized, while in detuned segments coupling results in complex switching scenarios that may be controlled by stacking several resonant and nonresonant segments. By tuning the modulation frequency and lengths of waveguide segments one may control the distribution of light among the output g…
Light propagation in optical waveguides with periodically modulated index of refraction and alternating gain and loss are investigated for linear and nonlinear systems. Based on a multiscale perturbation analysis, it is shown that for many non-parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric waveguides, their linear spectrum is partially complex, thus light exponentially grows or decays upon propagation, and this growth or delay is not altered by nonlinearity. However, several classes of non-$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric waveguides are also identified to possess all-real linear spectrum. In the nonlinear reg…
We theoretically report an analog of photon-assisted tunneling (PAT) in a periodically driven lattice array without a static biased potential by studying a three-channel waveguide system. This analog of PAT can be achieved by only periodically modulating the top waveguide and adjusting the distance between the bottom and its adjacent waveguide. It is numerically shown that the PAT resonances also exist in the five-channel waveguide system and probably exist in the waveguide arrays with other odd numbers of waveguides, but they will become weak as the number of waveguides increases. With origin…
Non-Hermitian photonic systems are known to exhibit unique phenomena, where non-Hermiticity is typically introduced by material loss or gain. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate unidirectional phenomena solely based on radiation. Our design is on the basis of a double-lattice photonic crystal that has a linear dispersion with a single exceptional point, where the magnitudes of Hermitian and non-Hermitian couplings are cancelled out in one direction. Based on this concept, we realize a unidirectional waveguide which shows perfect radiation when light is incident from one side, and s…
Nonreciprocity and one-way propagation of optical signals is crucial for modern nanophotonic technology, and is typically achieved using magneto-optical effects requiring large magnetic biases. Here we suggest a fundamentally novel approach to achieve unidirectional propagation of surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) at metal-dielectric interfaces. We employ a direct electric current in metals, which produces a Doppler frequency shift of SPPs due to the uniform drift of electrons. This tilts the SPP dispersion, enabling one-way propagation, as well as zero and negative group velocities. The resul…
Striving for nanometer-sized solid-state single-photon sources, we investigate atom-like quantum emitters based on single germanium vacancy (GeV) centers isolated in crystalline nanodiamonds (NDs). Cryogenic characterization indicated symmetry-protected and bright (> 10^6 counts/s with off-resonance excitation) zero-phonon optical transitions with up to 6-fold enhancement in energy splitting of their ground states as compared to that found for GeV centers in bulk diamonds (i.e., up to 870 GHz in highly strained NDs vs 150 GHz in bulk). Utilizing lithographic alignment techniques, we demonstrat…
We report a planar 1D photonic bandgap waveguide exhibiting four second-order exceptional points (EP2s). The interactions between the selective pairs of supported quasi-guided TE modes are modulated by spatial distribution of transverse in-homogeneous gain-loss profile.
Unidirectional pulse propagation equations [UPPE, Phys. Rev. E 70, 036604 (2004)] have provided a theoretical underpinning for computer-aided investigations into dynamics of high-power ultrashort laser pulses and have been successfully utilized for almost a decade. Unfortunately, they are restricted to applications in bulk media or, with additional approximations, to simple waveguide geometries in which only a few guided modes can approximate the propagating waveform. The purpose of this work is to generalize the directional pulse propagation equations to structures characterized by strong ref…
This paper reviews the application of coherent acoustic phonons in the form of piezoelectrically-generated surface acoustic waves to control the response of integrated photonic acousto-optic waveguide structures. We first address the fundamental properties of the acoustic fields in piezoelectric materials as well as the piezoelectric generation of surface acoustic waves using interdigital transducers. The mechanism responsible for the interaction between light and the acoustic modes in the photonic waveguide structures and the modulation of the response of the devices is carefully reviewed. Ne…
We design coupled optical microcavities and report directional light emission from high-$Q$ modes for a broad range of refractive indices. The system consists of a circular cavity that provides a high-$Q$ mode in form of a whispering gallery mode, whereas an adjacent deformed microcavity plays the role of a waveguide or collimator of the light transmitted from the circular cavity. As a result of this very simple, yet robust, concept we obtain high-$Q$ modes with promising directional emission characteristics. No information about phase space is required, and the proposed scheme can be easily r…
We study theoretically the spatial distribution of the polarizations in the array of resonant electromagnetic dipole emitters coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide. The ratchet effect manifests itself in the spatial asymmetry of the distribution of the emitter occupations along the array under symmetrical pumping from both sides. The occupation asymmetry is driven by the periodic modulation in time of the emitter resonance frequencies. We find numerically and analytically the optimal conditions for maximal asymmetry. We also demonstrate that the ratchet effect can be enhanced due to the forma…
In this paper we report successful transmission of 10 Gbit/s on-off-keying (OOK) modulated signal through the LR-DLSPPWs with almost negligible degradation of the data flow consistency
Asymmetric mode transformation in waveguide is of great significance for on-chip integrated devices with one-way effect, while it is challenging to achieve asymmetric nonlinear-mode-conversion (NMC) due to the limitations imposed by phase-matching. In this letter, we theoretically proposed a new scheme for realizing asymmetric NMC by combining frequency-doubling process and periodic PT symmetric modulation in an optical waveguide. By engineering the one-way momentum from PT symmetric modulation, we have demonstrated the unidirectional conversion from pump to second harmonic with desired guided…
We have theoretically and experimentally achieved large-area one-way transport by using heterostructures consisting of a domain of an ordinary photonic crystal (PC) sandwiched between two domains of magnetic PCs. The non-magnetized domain carries two orthogonal one-way waveguide states which have amplitude uniformly distributed over a large-area. These two waveguide states support unidirectional transport even though the medium of propagation is not magnetized. We show both experimentally and numerically that such one-way waveguide states can be utilized to abruptly narrow the beam width of an…

Here, we investigate the Cherenkov emission by an array of moving electric charges in the vicinity of a topologically nontrivial gyrotropic material. It is shown that the nonreciprocal material response may result in a robustly asymmetric Cherenkov emission, such that the spectrum of the emitted radiation and the stopping power depend strongly on the sign of the particle velocity. It is demonstrated that the main emission channels are determined by the unidirectional edge states supported by the topological material. We consider as examples both magnetized plasmas and Weyl semi-metals. The lat…
We address dissipative soliton formation in modulated PT-symmetric continuous waveguide arrays composed from waveguides with amplifying and absorbing sections, whose density gradually increases (due to decreasing waveguide separation) either towards the center of the array or towards its edges. In such a structure the level of gain/loss at which PT-symmetry gets broken depends on the direction of increase of the waveguide density. Breakup of the PT-symmetry occurs when eigenvalues of modes localized in the region, where waveguide density is largest, collide and move into complex plane. In this…
Energy squeezing attracts many attentions for its potential applications in electromagnetic (EM) energy harvesting and optical communication. However, due to the Fabry-Perot resonance, only the EM waves with discrete frequencies can be squeezed and, as far as we know, in the previous energy-squeezing devices, stringent requirements of the materials or the geometrical shape are needed. We note that the structures filled with epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) mediums as reported in some works can squeeze and tunnel EM waves at frequencies (e.g. plasma frequency). However, the group velocity is usually nea…

Transverse spin angular momentum of light is a key concept in recent nanophotonics to realize unidirectional light transport in waveguides by spin-momentum locking. Herein we theoretically propose subwavelength nanoparticle chain waveguides that efficiently sort optical spins with engineerable spin density distributions. By arranging high-refractive-index nanospheres of different sizes in a zigzag manner, directional optical spin propagation is realized. The origin of the efficient spin transport is revealed by analyzing the dispersion relation and spin angular momentum density distributions. …
We demonstrate that the integration of a phase-change material (PCM) in one of the two microresonators of a photonic metamolecule, coupled to a bus waveguide, can lead to unidirectional Fano resonances and to the emergence of a unidirectional transmission window. The phase change is caused by light-induced heating and is accompanied by an abrupt increase in the extinction coefficient of the PCM resonator. Due to the photonic circuit asymmetry, the critical value of the input light intensity triggering the phase change is strongly dependent on the input light direction. The latter determines th…
As the formation of spatial optical solitons in photorefractive media is governed by modification of the refractive index every single solitons in complex configurations of solitons can act as a single waveguide for other light beams. In this article we demonstrate guiding of amplitude modulated beams in complex configurations of photorefractive solitons carrying information and we analyze the received signal in the kHz frequency range. The possibility of data transmission combined with waveguide couplers opens the route to all-optical networks.
We present a Fourier finite element modeling of light emission of dipolar emitters coupled to infinitely long waveguides. Due to the translational symmetry, the three-dimensional (3D) coupled waveguide-emitter system can be decomposed into a series of independent 2D problems (2.5D), which reduces the computational cost. Moreover, the reduced 2D problems can be extremely accurate, compared to its 3D counterpart. Our method can precisely quantify the total emission rates, as well as the fraction of emission rates into different modal channels for waveguides with arbitrary cross-sections. We comp…
We review both theoretical and experimental advances in the recently emerged physics of modulated photonic lattices. Artificial periodic dielectric media, such as photonic crystals and photonic lattices, provide a powerful tool for the control of the fundamental properties of light propagation in photonic structures. Photonic lattices are arrays of coupled optical waveguides, where the light propagation becomes effectively discretized. Such photonic structures allow one to study many useful optical analogies with other fields, such as the physics of solid state and electron theory. In particul…
