Transverse spin angular momentum of light is a key concept in recent nanophotonics to realize unidirectional light transport in waveguides by spin-momentum locking. Herein we theoretically propose subwavelength nanoparticle chain waveguides that efficiently sort optical spins with engineerable spin density distributions. By arranging high-refractive-index nanospheres of different sizes in a zigzag manner, directional optical spin propagation is realized. The origin of the efficient spin transport is revealed by analyzing the dispersion relation and spin angular momentum density distributions. In contrast to conventional waveguides, the proposed asymmetric waveguide can spatially separate up- and down-spins and locate one parity inside and the other outside the structure. Moreover, robustness against bending the waveguide and its application as an optical spin sorter are presented. Compared to previous reports on spatial engineering of local spins in photonic crystal waveguides, we achieved substantial miniaturization of the entire footprint down to subwavelength scale.
We put forward a novel, twofold scheme that enables at the same time all-optical enantioselection and sorting of single multipolar chiral microspheres based on optical pulling forces exerted by two non-collinear, nonstructured, circularly-polarized light sources. Our chiral resolution method can be externally controlled by varying the angle between their incident wavevectors, allowing for a fine-tuning of the range of chiral indices for enantioselection. Enantioselectivity is achieved by choosing angles such that only particles with the same handedness of the light sources are pulled. This pro…
The transverse component of the spin angular momentum of evanescent waves gives rise to lateral optical forces on chiral particles, which have the unusual property of acting in a direction in which there is neither a field gradient nor wave propagation. As their direction and strength depends on the chiral polarizability of the particle, they act as chirality-sorting and may offer a mechanism for passive chirality spectroscopy. The absolute strength of the forces also substantially exceeds that of other recently predicted sideways optical forces, such that they may more readily offer an experi…
Light carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) has been shown to be of use in a disparate range of fields ranging from astronomy to optical trapping, and as a promising new dimension for multiplexing signals in optical communications and data storage. A challenge to many of these applications is a reliable and dynamic method that sorts incident OAM states without altering them. Here we report a wavelength-independent technique capable of dynamically filtering individual OAM states based on the resonant transmission of a tunable optical cavity. The cavity length is piezo-controlled to facilitate…
An extended interference pattern close to surface may result in both a transmissive or evanescent surface fields for large area manipulation of trapped particles. The affinity of differing particle sizes to a moving standing wave light pattern allows us to hold and deliver them in a bi-directional manner and importantly demonstrate experimentally particle sorting in the sub-micron region. This is performed without the need of fluid flow (static sorting). Theoretical calculations experimentally confirm that certain sizes of colloidal particles thermally hop more easily between neighboring traps…
Mode sorting is an essential function for optical systems exploiting the orthogonality of photonic orbital angular momentum mode space. The familiar log-polar optical transformation provides an efficient yet simple approach, however with its resolution restricted by a considerable overlap between adjacent modes resulting from the limited excursion of the phase along one complete circle around the optical vortex axis that is transformed into a line segment with finite length. We propose and experimentally verify a new optical transformation that maps spirals instead of closed concentric circles…
The orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light has recently attracted a growing interest as a new degree of freedom in order to increase the information capacity of today optical networks both for free-space and optical fiber transmission. Here we present our work of design, fabrication and optical characterization of diffractive optical elements for compact OAM-mode division demultiplexing based on optical transformations. Samples have been fabricated with 3D high-resolution electron beam lithography on polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) resist layer spun over a glass substrate. Their high compactnes…
We experimentally studied whispering-gallery modes(WGMs) and demonstrated resonance enhancement of optical forces evanescently exerted on dielectric microspheres. We showed that the resonant light pressure can be used for optical sorting of microparticles with extraordinary uniform resonant properties that is unachievable by conventional sorting techniques.
Optical coordinate transformation (OCT) has attracted widespread attention in the field of orbital angular momentum (OAM) (de)multiplexing or manipulation, but the performance of OCT would suffer from its distortion. In this paper, we quantitatively analyze the distortion of OCT from the perspective of ray optics, and explain its rationality to work under non-normal incident light. For the special case of log-polar coordinate transformation (LPCT), we use a raytracing assisted optimization scheme to improve its distortion, which is related to a Zernike polynomial based phase compensation. Afte…
Multi-plane light converters (MPLCs) are an emerging class of optical device capable of converting a set of input spatial light modes to a new target set of output modes. This operation represents a linear optical transformation - a much sought after capability in photonics. MPLCs have potential applications in both the classical and quantum optics domains, in fields ranging from optical communications, to optical computing and imaging. They consist of a series of diffractive optical elements (the 'planes'), typically separated by free-space. The phase delays imparted by each plane are determi…
We create two overlapping one-dimensional optical lattices using a single laser beam, a spatial light modulator and a high numerical aperture lens. These lattices have the potential to trap single atoms, and using the dynamic capabilities of the spatial light modulator may shift and sort atoms to a minimum atom-atom separation of $1.52 μ$m. We show how a simple feedback circuit can compensate for the spatial light modulator's intensity modulation.
We present methods for generating and for sorting specific orbital angular momentum (OAM) eigenmodes of a light beam with high efficiency, using a liquid crystal birefringent plate with unit topological charge, known as \qo{q-plate}. The generation efficiency has been optimized by tuning the optical retardation of the q-plate with temperature. The measured OAM $m=\pm2$ eigenmodes generation efficiency from an input TEM$_{00}$ beam was of 97%. Mode sorting of the two input OAM $m=\pm2$ eigenmodes was achieved with an efficiency of 81% and an extinction-ratio (or cross-talk) larger than 4.5:1.
Optical centrifuge has emerged as a promising tool for achieving centrifuge motion of particles in many fields. Herein, we report a novel optical centrifuge, as driven by optical lateral force arising from transverse phase gradient of light in holographic optical tweezers. It has remarkable advantages, including rapid speed, small footprint, flexible design and easy control. The optical clearing and sorting as application examples have been experimentally demonstrated by using Au and polystyrene nanoparticles. The results show that the optical centrifuge exhibits excellent performance, while u…
By employing a series of massively parallel ab-initio simulations, we study how optical forces act on biological matter subject to morphological disease. As a representative case study, we here consider the case of Plasmodium Falciparum on red blood cells (RBC) illuminated by a monochromatic plane wave. Realistic parameters for the geometry and the refractive index are then taken from published experiments. In our theoretical campaign, we study the dependence of the optical force on the disease stage for different incident wavelengths. We show that optical forces change significantly with the …
Parallel sorting of orbital angular momentum (OAM) and polarization has recently acquired paramount importance and interest in a wide range of fields ranging from telecommunications to high-dimensional quantum cryptography. Due to their inherently polarization-sensitive optical response, optical elements acting on the geometric phase prove to be useful for processing structured light beams with orthogonal polarization states by means of a single optical platform. In this work, we present the design, fabrication and test of a Pancharatnam-Berry optical element in silicon implementing a log-pol …
Sorting spatial optical modes is a key challenge that underpins many applications from super-resolved imaging to high-dimensional quantum key distribution. However, to date implementations of optical mode sorters only operate on specific sets of modes, such as those carrying orbital angular momentum, and therefore lack versatility with respect to operation with an arbitrary spatial basis. Here, we demonstrate an arbitrary spatial mode sorter by harnessing the random mode mixing process occurring during light propagation in a multimode fibre by wavefront shaping. By measuring the transmission m…
The ever-growing field of microfluidics requires precise and flexible control over fluid flow at the micro- and nanoscales. Current constraints demand a variety of controllable components for performing different operations inside closed microchambers and microreactors. In this context, novel nanophotonic approaches can significantly enhance existing capabilities and provide new functionalities via finely tuned light-matter interaction mechanisms. Here we propose a novel design, featuring a dual functionality on-chip: boosted optically-driven particle diffusion and nanoparticle sorting. Our me…
The interaction between dielectric particles and a laser-driven optical cavity gives rise to both conservative and dissipative dynamics, which can be used to levitate, trap and cool nanoparticles. We analytically and numerically study a two-mode setup in which the optical potentials along the cavity axis cancel, so that the resulting dynamics is almost purely dissipative. For appropriate detunings of the laser-drives, this dissipative optomechanical dynamics can be used to sort particles according to their size, to rectify their velocities and to enhance transverse cooling.
Coherent control of ensembles of light emitters by means of multi-wave mixing processes is key for the realization of high capacity optical quantum memories and information processing devices. In this context, semiconductor quantum dots placed in optical microcavities represent excellent candidates to explore strong light-matter interactions beyond the limits of perturbative non-linear optics and control the unitary evolution of optically driven quantum systems. In this work, we demonstrate that a sequence of two optical picosecond pulses can be used to establish coherent control over the phas…
We present a novel method for efficient sorting of photons prepared in states of orbital angular momentum (OAM) and angular position (ANG). A log-polar optical transform is used in combination with a holographic beam-splitting method to achieve better mode discrimination and reduced cross-talk than reported previously. Simulating this method for 7 modes, we have calculated an improved mutual information of 2.43 bits/photon and 2.29 bits/photon for OAM and ANG modes respectively. In addition, we present preliminary results from an experimental implementation of this technique. This method is ex…
We propose a method for sorting electrons by orbital angular momentum (OAM). Several methods now exist to prepare electron wavefunctions in OAM states, but no technique has been developed for efficient, parallel measurement of pure and mixed electron OAM states. The proposed technique draws inspiration from the recent demonstration of the sorting of OAM through modal transformation. We show that the same transformation can be performed with electrostatic electron optical elements. Specifically, we show that a charged needle and an array of electrodes perform the transformation and phase correc…
A different paradigm is proposed to selectively manipulate and transport small engineered chiral particles and discriminate different enantiomers using unstructured chiral light. It is theoretically shown that the response of a chiral metamaterial particle may be tailored to enable an optical conveyor belt operation with no optical traps, such that for a fixed incident light helicity the nanoparticle is either steadily pushed towards the direction of the photon flow or steadily pulled against the photon flow, independent of its position. Our findings create distinct opportunities for unconvent…
When a linear chain of plasmonic nano-particles is subject to longitudinal magnetic field, it exhibits optical Faraday rotation. If the magnetized nano-particles are plasmonic ellipsoids arranged as a spiral chain, the interplay between the Faraday rotation and the geometrical spiral rotation (structural chirality) can strongly enhance non-reciprocity. This interplay forms a waveguide that permits one way propagation only, within four disjoint frequency bands; two bands for each direction.
We consider self-pulsing regimes in chains of Kerr nonlinear optical microresonators. By means of a supermodal diagonalization procedure of the conventional coupled-mode theory in time, we theoretically and numerically study the bifurcation diagrams of a singly pumped three-cavity and a doubly pumped four-cavity system: the latter allows us to predict thresholdless frequency tripling of a GHz modulation. These self-pulsing regimes are proven robust and will find applications in the generation and conversion of microwaves on an optical carrier.
Subwavelength plasmonic waveguides show the unique ability of strongly localizing (down to the nanoscale) and guiding light. These structures are intrinsically two-way optical communication channels, providing two opposite light propagation directions. As a consequence, when light is coupled to these planar integrated devices directly from the top (or bottom) surface using strongly focused beams, it is equally shared into the two opposite propagation directions. Here, we show that symmetry can be broken by using incident circularly polarized light, on the basis of a spin-orbital angular moment…
On the one hand, electromagnetic dual particles preserve the helicity of light upon interaction. On the other hand, chiral particles respond differently to light of opposite helicity. These two properties on their own constitute a source of fascination. Their combined action, however, is less explored. Here, we study on analytical grounds the force and torque as well as the optical cross sections of dual chiral particles in the dipolar approximation exerted by a particular wave of well-defined helicity: A circularly polarized plane wave. We put emphasis on particles that possess a maximally el…
The paper deals with optical excitations arising in a one-dimensional chain of identical spheres due optical coupling of whispering gallery modes (WGM). The band structure of these excitations depends significantly on the inter-mixing between WGMs characterized by different values of angular quantum number, $l$. We develop a general theory of the photonic band structure of these excitations taking these effects into account and applied it to several cases of recent experimental interest. In the case of bands originating from WQMs with the angular quantum number of the same parity, the calculat…
Light beams carrying orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) play an important role in optical manipulation and communication owing to their unbounded state space. However, it is still challenging to efficiently discriminate OAM modes with large topological charges and thus only a small part of the OAM states have been usually used. Here we demonstrate that neural networks can be trained to sort OAM modes with large topological charges and unknown superpositions. Using intensity images of OAM modes generalized in simulations and experiments as the input data, we illustrate that our neural network has g…
In this paper, we will propose that magnetic-resonance nanostructures in a metal surface could be used to realize extraordinary optical transmission (EOT). Toward this goal, we designed and fabricated a one dimensional diatomic chain of slit-hole resonator (SHR). Due to the strong exchange current interaction, a type of magnetic plasmon (MP) propagation mode with a broad frequency bandwidth was established in this system. Apparent EOT peaks induced by the MP mode were observed in our measured spectra at infrared frequencies. The strongest EOT peak was obtained at 1.07 eV with an incident angle…
Topological nodal rings as the simplest topological nodal lines recently have been extensively studied in optical lattices. However, the realization of complex nodal line structures like nodal chains in this system remains a crucial challenge. Here we propose an experimental scheme to realize and detect topological nodal chains in optical Raman lattices. Specifically, we construct a three-dimensional optical Raman lattice which supports next nearest-neighbor spin-orbit couplings and hosts topological nodal chains in its energy spectra. Interestingly, the realized nodal chains are protected by …
We study the optical responses of metal nanoparticle chains. Multiple scattering calculations are used to study the extinction cross sections of silver nanosphere chains of finite length embedded in a glass matrix. The transmission and reflection coefficients of periodic 2D arrays of silver nanospheres are also calculated to understand the interaction between nanoparticle chains. The results are in agreement with recent experiments. The splitting of plasmon-resonance modes for different polarizations of the incident light are explored. Results on the effect of disorder are also presented.
Dynamics of polarization optical singularities chain reactions in generic elliptically polarized speckle fields created in photorefractive crystal LiNbO3 was investigated in details Induced speckle field develops in the tens of minutes scale due to photorefractive 'optical damage effect' induced by incident beam of He-Ne laser. It was shown that polarization singularities develop through topological chain reactions of developing speckle fields driven by photorefractive nonlinearities induced by incident laser beam. All optical singularities (C points, optical vortices, optical diabolos,) are d…
In this dissertation novel resonant propulsion of dielectric microspheres is studied with the goal of sorting spheres with identical resonances, which are critical for developing microspherical photonics. First, evanescent field couplers were developed by fixing tapered microfibers in mechanically robust platforms. The tapers were obtained by chemical etching techniques. Using these platforms, WGMs modal numbers, coupling regimes and quality factors were determined for various spheres and compared with theory. Second, the spectroscopic properties of photonic molecules formed by spheres with be…
Current optical manipulation techniques rely on carefully engineered setups and samples. Although similar conditions are routinely met in research laboratories, it is still a challenge to manipulate microparticles when the environment is not well controlled and known a priori, since optical imperfections and scattering limit the applicability of this technique to real-life situations, such as in biomedical or microfluidic applications. Nonetheless, scattering of coherent light by disordered structures gives rise to speckles, random diffraction patterns with well-defined statistical properties.…
We study the enhancement of the magneto-optical effect in subdiffraction plasmonic chains. We show that in a periodic chain of the plasmonic nanoparticles embedded in a magneto-optical medium, propagation of a guided mode is accompanied by rotation of electrical dipoles (the Faraday effect). The angle of rotation per 1 μm is two orders of magnitude greater than that in the same bulk magneto-optical medium. We also demonstrate that the effect of Ohmic losses can be significantly reduced by using a gain-assisted chain composed of active core-shell nanoparticles (spasers). The dipole mode in such…
Free-space optical communication using the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light has garnered significant interest lately due to the potentially vast bandwidth intrinsic to the infinite Hilbert space of OAM modes. Unfortunately, OAM light beams suffer from serious distortions due to atmospheric turbulence (AT) that has become a dominant factor limiting the advance of OAM-based free-space communication. Here we propose and demonstrate a free-space communication scheme---using OAM beams and their azimuthal-mode phase-shift for keying (OAM-APSK)---which is resilient to AT-induced distortions. C…
We study nonlinear wave phenomena in coupled ring resonator optical waveguides in the tight coupling regime. A discrete model for the system dynamics is put forward and its steady state nonlinear Bloch modes are derived. The switching behavior of the transmission system is addressed numerically and the results are explained in the light of this analytical result. We also present a numerical study on the spontaneous generation of Bragg solitons from a continuous-wave input.
Dispersion relations for dipolar modes propagating along a chain of metal nanoparticles are calculated by solving the full Maxwell equations, including radiation damping. The nanoparticles are treated as point dipoles, which means the results are valid only for a/d <= 1/3, where a is the particle radius and d the spacing. The discrete modes for a finite chain are first calculated, then these are mapped onto the dispersion relations appropriate for the infinite chain. Computed results are given for a chain of 50-nm diameter Ag spheres spaced by 75 nm. We find large deviations from previous quas…
Natural materials typically interact weakly with the magnetic component of light which greatly limits their applications. This has led to the development of artificial metamaterials and metasurfaces. However, natural atoms, where only electric dipole transitions are relevant at optical frequencies, can cooperatively respond to light to form collective excitations with strong magnetic, as well as electric, interactions, together with corresponding electric and magnetic mirror reflection properties. By combining the electric and magnetic collective degrees of freedom we show that ultrathin plana…
We systematically investigate the generation of optical chirality patterns by applying the superposition of two waves in three scenarios, namely plane waves in free space, evanescent waves of totally reflected light at dielectric interface and propagating surface plasmon waves on a metallic surface. In each scenario, the general analytical solution of the optical chirality pattern is derived for different polarization states and propagating directions of the two waves. The analytical solutions are verified by numerical simulations. Spatially structured optical chirality patterns can be generat…
A network of optical parametric oscillators is used to simulate classical Ising and XY spin chains. The collective nonlinear dynamics of this network, driven by quantum noise rather than thermal fluctuations, seeks out the Ising / XY ground state as the system transitions from below to above the lasing threshold. We study the behavior of this "Ising machine" for three canonical problems: a 1D ferromagnetic spin chain, a 2D square lattice, and problems where next-nearest-neighbor couplings give rise to frustration. If the pump turn-on time is finite, topological defects form (domain walls for t…
A theoretical study of the resonance optical response of assemblies of oriented short (as compared to an optical wavelength) linear Frenkel chains is carried out using a two-level model. We show that both transmittivity and reflectivity of the film may behave in a bistable fashion and analyze how the effects found depend on the film thickness and on the inhomogeneous width of the exciton optical transition.
