Dispersion relations for dipolar modes propagating along a chain of metal nanoparticles are calculated by solving the full Maxwell equations, including radiation damping. The nanoparticles are treated as point dipoles, which means the results are valid only for a/d <= 1/3, where a is the particle radius and d the spacing. The discrete modes for a finite chain are first calculated, then these are mapped onto the dispersion relations appropriate for the infinite chain. Computed results are given for a chain of 50-nm diameter Ag spheres spaced by 75 nm. We find large deviations from previous quasistatic results: Transverse modes interact strongly with the light line. Longitudinal modes develop a bandwidth more than twice as large, resulting in a group velocity that is more than doubled. All modes for which k_mode <= w/c show strongly enhanced decay due to radiation damping.
Silicon nanoparticles possess unique size-dependent optical properties due to their strong electric and magnetic resonances in the visible range. However, their widespread application has been limited, in comparison to other (e.g. metallic) nanoparticles, because their preparation on monodisperse colloids remains challenging. Exploiting the unique properties of Si nanoparticles in nano- and micro-devices calls for methods able to sort and organize them from a colloidal suspension onto specific positions of solid substrates with nanometric precision. Here, we demonstrate that surfactant-free Si…
The physical origins of the transverse optical binding force and torque beyond the Rayleigh approximation have not been clearly expressed to date. Here, we present analytical expressions of the force and torque for a dual dipolar dielectric dimer illuminated by a plane wave propagating perpendicularly to the dimer axis. Using this analytical model, we explore the roles of the hybridized electric dipolar, magnetic dipolar, and electric-magnetic dipolar coupling interactions in the total force and torque on the particles. We find significant departures from the predictions of the Rayleigh approx…
We discuss the excitation of a chiral dipolar mode in an achiral silicon nanoparticle. In particular, we make use of the electric and magnetic polarizabilities of the silicon nanoparticle to construct this chiral electromagnetic mode which is conceptually similar to the fundamental modes of 3D chiral nanostructures or molecules. We describe the chosen tailored excitation with a beam carrying neither spin nor orbital angular momentum and investigate the emission characteristics of the chiral dipolar mode in the helicity basis, consisting of parallel electric and magnetic dipole moments, phase s…
We consider a simple cubic array of metallic nanoparticles supporting extended collective plasmons that arise from the near-field dipolar interaction between localized surface plasmons in each nanoparticle. We develop a fully analytical quantum theory of the strong-coupling regime between these collective plasmons and photons resulting in plasmon polaritons in the nanoparticle array. Remarkably, we show that the polaritonic band gap and the dielectric function of the metamaterial can be significantly modulated by the polarization of light. We unveil how such an anisotropic behavior in the plas…
We analytically investigate the effect of a non-centrosymmetric geometry in the optical second harmonic (SH) generation from a particle made of a centrosymmetric material, in the interior of which quadratic optical processes are suppressed. We consider a cylindrical particle with a cross-section that is slightly deformed away from a circle and with a radius much smaller than the wavelength. We calculate the induced linear and nonlinear fields perturbatively in terms of the deformation parameter and obtain the nonlinear dipolar and quadrupolar hyperpolarizabilities, whose spectra we evaluate fo…
By combining analytical and numerical approaches, we study resonantly enhanced second-harmonic generation (SHG) by individual high-index dielectric nanoparticles made of centrosymmetric materials. Considering both bulk and surface nonlinearities, we describe second-harmonic nonlinear scattering from a silicon nanoparticle optically excited in the vicinity of the magnetic and electric dipolar resonances. We discuss the contributions of different nonlinear sources, and the effect of the low-order optical Mie modes on the characteristics of the generated far-field. We demonstrate that the multipo…
Using a computational approach based on the driven diffusion equation for dipolariton wave packets, we simulate the diffusive dynamics of dipolaritons in an optical microcavity embedded with a transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) heterogeneous bilayer encompassing a Ψ-shaped channel. By considering exciton-dipolaritons, which are a three way superposition of direct excitons, indirect excitons and cavity photons, we are able to drive the dipolaritons in our system by the use of an electric voltage and investigate their diffusive properties. More precisely, we study the propagation of dipolari…
We investigate the interaction of tightly focused light with the surface-plasmon-polariton resonances of metal nanospheres. In particular, we compute the scattering and absorption ratios as well as transmission and reflection coefficients. Inspired by our previous work in Ref. [1], we discuss how well a metal nanoparticle approximates a point-like dipolar radiator. We find that a 100 nm silver nanosphere is very close to such an ideal oscillator. Our results have immediate implications for single nanoparticle spectroscopy and microscopy as well as plasmonics.
The resonance effects on the optical second harmonic generation from 140 nm silver nanoparticles is studied experimentally by hyper-Rayleigh scattering and numerically by finite element method calculations. We find that the interferences between the broad dipolar and narrow octupolar surface plasmon resonances leads to nonlinear Fano profiles that can be externally controlled by the incident polarization angle. These profiles are responsible for the nonlinear plasmon-induced transparency in the second harmonic generation.
In this work, we calculate the contribution of dipole-dipole interactions to the optical nonlinearity of the two-dimensional random ensemble of nanoparticles that possess a set of exciton levels, for example, quantum dots. The analytical expressions for the contributions in the cases of TM and TE-polarized light waves propagating along the plane are obtained. It is shown that the optical nonlinearity, caused by the dipole-dipole interactions in the planar ensemble of the nanoparticles, is several times smaller than the similar nonlinearity of the bulk nanocomposite. This type of optical nonlin…
The strong interaction of light with metallic nanoparticles enables field confinement well below the diffraction limit. Plasmonic waveguides consisting of metal nanoparticle chains could be used for the propagation of energy or information on the nanoscale, but high losses have thus far impeded practical applications. Here we demonstrate that efficient waveguiding is possible through gold nanoparticle chains despite the high dissipative losses of gold. A DNA origami directed self-assembly of monocrystalline, spherical nanoparticles allows the interparticle spacing to be decreased to 2 nm or be…
We present a theoretical treatment of light scattering by an ensemble of N dipoles, taking into account recurrent multiple scattering. We study the intrinsic optical properties of collective dipolar systems without specifying a particular illumination condition. We apply this formalism to study the collective absorption modes for an ensemble of small nanoparticles and then to derive collective radiative corrections due to mutual interactions in dipolar ensembles, a topic of major importance in the development of collective nanophotonic systems or atomic networks used as optical clocks.
We analyze the plasmonic modes of a metal nanoparticle circular array. Closed form solutions to the eigenmode problem are given. For each polarization, the plasmonic mode with the highest quality is found to be an antiphase mode. We found that the significant suppression in radiative loss can be understood as the cancellation of the dipolar radiation term in the radiative linewidth. The remaining finite radiative linewidth decreases exponentially as the number of particle increases.
The second-harmonic generation of 150 nm spherical gold nanoparticles is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. We demonstrate that the interference effects between dipolar and octupolar plasmons can be used as a fingerprint to discriminate the local surface and non-local bulk contributions to the second-harmonic generation. By fitting the experimental data with the electric fields computed with finite-element method (FEM) simulations, the Rudnick and Stern parameters weighting the relative nonlinear sources efficiencies are evaluated and the validity of the hydrodynamic model and…
We consider a chain of regularly-spaced spherical metallic nanoparticles, where each particle supports three degenerate localized surface plasmons. Due to the dipolar interaction between the nanoparticles, the localized plasmons couple to form extended collective modes. Using an open quantum system approach in which the collective plasmons are interacting with vacuum electromagnetic modes and which, importantly, readily incorporates retardation via the light-matter coupling, we analytically evaluate the resulting radiative frequency shifts of the plasmonic bandstructure. For subwavelength-size…
We investigate the collective plasmonic modes in a chain of metallic nanoparticles that are coupled by near-field interactions. The size- and momentum-dependent nonradiative Landau damping and radiative decay rates are calculated analytically within an open quantum system approach. These decay rates determine the excitation propagation along the chain. In particular, the behavior of the radiative decay rate as a function of the plasmon wavelength leads to a transition from an exponential decay of the collective excitation for short distances to an algebraic decay for large distances. Important…
We conceptually unify the description of resonances existing at metallic nanoparticles and optical nanowire antennas. To this end the nanoantenna is treated as a Fabry-Perot resonator with arbitrary semi-nanoparticles forming the terminations. We show that the frequencies of the quasi-static dipolar resonances of these nanoparticles coincide with the frequency where the phase of the complex reflection coefficient of the fundamental propagating plasmon polariton mode at the wire termination amounts to $π$. The lowest order Fabry-Perot resonance of the optical wire antenna occurs therefore even …
The formation of a stable magneto plasmonic dimer with THz resonances is theoretically studied for the principal directions of the system. Unlike a recent report, our work provides a complete description of the full photonic coupling for arbitrary magnetic fields as, for instance, unbalanced particle spins. As an illustration, we consider two small, n-doped InSb nanoparticles under illumination by two counter-propagating plane waves. Remarkably, when an external magnetic field exists, the symmetry in the system is broken, and a resonant radiation pressure for the dimer appears. Similarly, tuna…
We predict the simultaneous occurrence of two fundamental phenomena for metal nanoparticles possessing sharp corners: First, the main plasmonic dipolar mode experiences strong red shift with decreasing corner curvature radius; its resonant frequency is controlled by the apex angle of the corner and the normalized (to the particle size) corner curvature. Second, the split-off plasmonic mode experiences strong localization at the corners. Altogether, this paves the way for tailoring of metal nano-structures providing wavelength-selective excitation of localized plasmons and a strong near-field e…
Using either quasi-static approximation or exact Mie expansion, we characterize the localized surface plasmons supported by a metallic spherical nanoparticle. We estimate the quality factor $Q_n$ and define the effective volume $V_n$ of the $n^{th}$ mode in a such a way that coupling strength with a neighbouring dipolar emitter is proportional to the ratio $Q_n/V_n$ (Purcell factor). The role of Joule losses, far-field scattering and mode confinement in the coupling mechanism are introduced and discussed with simple physical understanding, with particular attention paid to energy conservation.
Optical forces allow manipulation of small particles and control of nanophotonic structures with light beams. Here, we describe a counter-intuitive lateral optical force acting on particles placed above a substrate, under uniform plane wave illumination without any field gradients. We show that under circularly-polarized illumination, nanoparticles experience a lateral force as a result of dipolar, spin-sensitive scattering, with a magnitude comparable to other optical forces. To this end, we rigorously calculate the force experienced by a circularly polarized dipole radiating above a surface.…
Noble metal nanoparticles exhibit localized plasmon resonance modes that span the visible and near-infrared spectral ranges and have many applications. Modifying the size, shape, and composition of the nanoparticles changes the number of modes and their properties. The characteristics of these modes are transiently affected when illuminating the nano-objects with ultrashort laser pulses. Here, we synthesize core-shell gold-silver nanocuboids and measure their spectral signature in the stationary and ultrafast transient regimes. Their dipolar transverse mode vanishes with increasing Ag-shell th…
Fano resonances are features in transmissivity/reflectivity/absorption that owe their origin to the interaction between a bright resonance and a dark (i.e., sub-radiant) narrower resonance, and may emerge in the optical properties of planar two-dimensional (2D) periodic arrays (metasurfaces) of plasmonic nanoparticles. In this Letter, we provide a thorough assessment of their nature for the general case of normal and oblique plane wave incidence, highlighting when a Fano resonance is affected by the mutual coupling in an array and its capability to support free modal solutions. We analyze the …
We theoretically and numerically investigate metal enhanced fluorescence of plasmonic core-shell nanoparticles doped with rare earth (RE) ions. Particle shape and size are engineered to maximize the average enhancement factor (AEF) of the overall doped shell. We show that the highest enhancement (11 in the visible and 7 in the near-infrared) are achieved by tuning either the dipolar or quadrupolar particle resonance to the rare earth ions excitation wavelength. Additionally, the calculated AEFs are compared to experimental data reported in the literature, obtained in similar conditions (plasmo…
We present analytical expressions for the resonance frequencies of the plasmonic modes hosted in a cylindrical nanoparticle within the quasistatic approximation. Our theoretical model gives us access to both the longitudinally and transversally polarized dipolar modes for a metallic cylinder with an arbitrary aspect ratio, which allows us to capture the physics of both plasmonic nanodisks and nanowires. We also calculate quantum mechanical corrections to these resonance frequencies due to the spill-out effect, which is of relevance for cylinders with nanometric dimensions. We go on to consider…
The arrangement of plasmonic nanoparticles in a non-symmetrical environment can feature the far-field and/or near-field interactions depending on the distance between the objects. In this work, we study the hybridization of three intrinsic plasmonic modes (dipolar, quadrupolar and hexapolar modes) sustained by one elliptical aluminium nanocylinder, as well as behavior of the hybridized modes when the nanoparticles are organized in array or when the refractive index of the surrounding medium is changed. The position and the intensity of these hybridized modes were shown to be affected by the ne…
We theoretically investigate plasmon polaritons in cubic lattices of spherical metallic nanoparticles. The nanoparticles, each supporting triply-degenerate localized surface plasmons, couple through the Coulomb dipole-dipole interaction, giving rise to collective plasmons that extend over the whole metamaterial. The latter hybridize with photons forming plasmon polaritons, which are the hybrid light-matter eigenmodes of the system. We derive general analytical expressions to evaluate both plasmon and plasmon-polariton dispersions, and the corresponding eigenstates. These are obtained within a …
Coupled plasmon modes are studied in graded plasmonic waveguides, which are periodic chains of metallic nanoparticles embedded in a host with gradually varying refractive indices. We identify three types of localized modes called "light", "heavy", and "light-heavy" plasmonic gradons outside the passband, according to various degrees of localization. We also demonstrate new transitions among extended and localized modes when the interparticle separation $d$ is smaller than a critical $d_c$, whereas the three types of localized modes occur for $d>d_c$, with no extended modes. The transitions can…
The design of far-field radiation diagrams from combined electric and magnetic dipolar sources has recently found applications in nanophotonic metasurfaces that realize tailored reflection and refraction. Such dipolar sources also exhibit important near-field evanescent coupling properties with applications in polarimetry and quantum optics. Here we introduce a rigorous theoretical framework for engineering the angular spectra encompassing both far- and near-fields of electric and magnetic sources and develop a unified description of both free space and guided mode directional radiation. The a…
The spin orbit interactions (SOI) of light mediated by single scattering from plasmon resonant metal nanoparticles (nanorods and nanospheres) are investigated using explicit theory based on Jones and Stokes-Mueller polarimetry formalism. The individual SOI effects are analyzed and interpreted via the Mueller matrix-derived, polarimetry characteristics, namely, diattenuation d and retardance δ. The results demonstrate that each of the contributing SOI effects can be controllably enhanced by exploiting the interference of two neighboring modes in plasmonic nanostructures (orthogonal electric dip…
We experimentally study the transport prop- erties of dipolar and fundamental modes on one di- mensional (1D) coupled waveguide arrays. By carefully modulating a wide optical beam, we are able to effec- tively excite dipolar or fundamental modes to study discrete diffraction (single-site excitation) and gaussian beam propagation (multi-site excitation plus a phase gradient). We observe that dipolar modes experience a larger spreading area due to an effective larger coupling constant, which is found to be more than two times larger than the one for fundamental modes. Addition- ally, we study th…
We study a bipartite linear chain constituted by spherical metallic nanoparticles, where each nanoparticle supports a localized surface plasmon. The near-field dipolar interaction between the localized surface plasmons gives rise to collective plasmons, which are extended over the whole nanoparticle array. We derive analytically the spectrum and the eigenstates of the collective plasmonic excitations. At the edge of the Brillouin zone, the spectrum is of a pseudorelativistic nature similar to that present in the electronic band structure of polyacetylene. We find the effective Dirac Hamiltonia…
We present a simple model of collective plasmons in a dimerized chain of spherical metallic nanoparticles, an elementary example of a topologically nontrivial nanoplasmonic system. Taking into account long-range quasistatic dipolar interactions throughout the chain, we provide an exact analytical expression for the full quasistatic bandstructure of the collective plasmons. An explicit calculation of the Zak phase proves the robustness of the topological physics of the system against the inclusion of long-range Coulomb interactions, despite the broken chiral symmetry. Using an open quantum syst…
The acceleration of an spheroidal metal nanoparticle in an irradiation field with a frequency close to the surface plasmon vibration has been considered. Under the action of radiation pressure, the polarizability for nonspherical particle becomes a tensor quantity. The analytical expressions for the resonance acceleration components for the cases of plane-polarized and circularly polarized light have been derived. We have demonstrated that the resonance acceleration can depend substantially on the shape of a metal nanoparticle and its orientation with respect to the directions of light propaga…
We study the interaction between a topological insulator nanoparticle and a quantum dot subject to an applied electric field. The electromagnetic response of the topological insulator is derived from axion electrodynamics in the quasistatic approximation. Localized modes are quantized in terms of dipolar bosonic modes, which couples dipolarly to the quantum dot. Hence, we treat the hybrid as a two-level system interacting with a single bosonic mode, where the coupling strength encodes the information concerning the nontrivial topology of the nanoparticle. The interaction of the hybrid with the…
We introduce a many body theory for thermal far-field emission of dipolar dielectric and metallic nanoparticles in the vicinity of a substrate within the framework of fluctuational electrodynamics. Our theoretical model includes the possibility to define the temperatures of each nanoparticle, the substrate temperature, and the temperature of the background thermal radiation, separately. To demonstrate the versatility of our method, we apply it in an exemplary way by discussing the thermal radiation of four particle assemblies of SiC and Ag nanoparticles above a planar SiC and Ag substrate. Fur…
In a Drude-like model for the conduction electrons of Metal Nanoparticles (MNPs) in a periodic linear chain, considering dipole-dipole interactions of adjacent particles, an analytical expression is derived for each particle permittivity for two different polarizations of incident light: parallel with and perpendicular to the chain line. A numerical analysis is carried out for a chain including 10 identical gold Nanoparticles (NPs) for two different sizes of NPs and two different host media of air and glass. It is shown that in the parallel case of polarization, interaction of NPs leads to a s…
The influence of the electromagnetic irradiation pressure on a spheroidal metallic nanoparticle at the frequencies close to the surface plasmon vibrations has been considered. With the action of the radiation pressure, the polarizability of metal nanoparticle becomes a tensor quantity. The expressions for the resonance pressure components for the cases of plane-polarized and circularly polarized light have been derived. We have demonstrated that the resonance pressure can substantially depend on the shape of a non-spherical nanoparticle and its orientation with respect to the direction of ligh…
