Photonic crystal waveguides are known to support C-points - point-like polarisation singularities with local chirality. Such points can couple with dipole-like emitters to produce highly directional emission, from which spin-photon entanglers can be built. Much is made of the promise of using slow-light modes to enhance this light-matter coupling. Here we explore the transition from travelling to standing waves for two different photonic crystal waveguide designs. We find that time-reversal symmetry and the reciprocal nature of light places constraints on using C-points in the slow-light regime. We observe two distinctly different mechanisms through which this condition is satisfied in the two waveguides. In the waveguide designs we consider, a modest group-velocity of $v_g \approx c/10$ is found to be the optimum for slow-light coupling to the C-points.
Photonic topological insulators are a promising photonic platform due to the possibility of unidirectional edge states with insensitivity to bending, fabrication imperfections or environmental fluctuation. Here we demonstrate highly efficient unidirectional photonic edge mode propagation facilitated by an optical analogue of the quantum valley Hall effect. With an all-dielectric kagome lattice design, we demonstrate broadband suppressed reflection in the presence of sharp corners and further show negligible vertical losses in a semiconductor-based device at telecommunication wavelengths.
Non-Hermitian photonic systems are known to exhibit unique phenomena, where non-Hermiticity is typically introduced by material loss or gain. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate unidirectional phenomena solely based on radiation. Our design is on the basis of a double-lattice photonic crystal that has a linear dispersion with a single exceptional point, where the magnitudes of Hermitian and non-Hermitian couplings are cancelled out in one direction. Based on this concept, we realize a unidirectional waveguide which shows perfect radiation when light is incident from one side, and s…
The introduction of topology unravels a new chapter of physics. Topological systems provide unique edge/interfacial quantum states which are expected to contribute to the development of novel spintronics and open the door to robust quantum computation. Optical systems can also benefit from topology. Engineering locally in real space a honeycomb photonic crystal with double Dirac cone in its photonic dispersion, topology transition in photonic band structure is induced and a pseudospin unidirectional optical channel is created and demonstrated by the backscattering immune electromagnetic transp…

We present an inverse design approach to significantly improve the figures-of-merit for chiral photon elements and quantum emitters in topological photonic crystal slab waveguides. Beginning with a topological waveguide mode with a group index of approximately 10 and a maximum forwards or backwards Purcell factor at a chiral point of less than 0.5, we perform optimizations of the directional Purcell factor. We use a fully three dimensional guided-mode expansion method to efficiently calculate waveguide band dispersion properties and modes, while automatic differentiation is employed to calcula…
We demonstrate that the integration of a phase-change material (PCM) in one of the two microresonators of a photonic metamolecule, coupled to a bus waveguide, can lead to unidirectional Fano resonances and to the emergence of a unidirectional transmission window. The phase change is caused by light-induced heating and is accompanied by an abrupt increase in the extinction coefficient of the PCM resonator. Due to the photonic circuit asymmetry, the critical value of the input light intensity triggering the phase change is strongly dependent on the input light direction. The latter determines th…
By exploiting the concepts of magnetic group theory we show how unidirectional behavior can be obtained in two-dimensional magneto-photonic crystals (MOPhC) with uniform magnetization. This group theory approach generalizes all previous investigations of one-way MOPhCs including those based on the use of antiparallel magnetic domains in the elementary crystal cell. Here, the theoretical approach is illustrated for one MOPhC example where unidirectional behavior is obtained by appropriately lowering the geometrical symmetry of the elementary motifs. One-way transmission is numerically demonstra…
A method for realizing asymmetric (one-way) transmission of discretized light in modulated, linear and purely passive optical lattices is suggested, which exploits the idea of unidirectional coherent perfect absorption. The system consists of a linear photonic lattice of coupled resonators or waveguides, side coupled to a chain of lossy elements, in which light can avoid the occupation of the dissipative sites when propagating in one way, but not in the opposite one. Non-reciprocity requires modulation of the resonator/waveguide parameters, realizing a dissipative optical Aharonov-Bohm diode w…
Nonreciprocal photonic devices enable "one-way" light flows and are essential building blocks of optical systems. Here, we investigate an alternative paradigm to break reciprocity and achieve unidirectional subwavelength light propagation fully compatible with modern all-photonic highly-integrated systems. In agreement with a few recent studies, our theoretical model predicts that a graphene sheet biased with a drift electric current has a strong nonreciprocal tunable response. Strikingly, we find that the propagation of the surface plasmon polaritons can be effectively "one-way" and may be la…
Non-Hermitian (NH) photonics has attracted considerable attention from researchers owing to exotic properties that originate from the parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) phase transition and exceptional points (EPs). To date, the $\mathcal{PT}$ phase transition, EPs, and circling around EPs have been investigated in many photonic systems. However, few studies focused on the singular nature of the EP eigenstates of the Hamiltonian matrices. Moreover, the switching of an EP eigenstate based on the sign of the coupling constant and its manifestation in physical phenomena have not yet been investigated. …
Engineering local angular momentum of structured light fields in real space enables unprecedented applications in many fields, in particular for the realization of unidirectional robust transport in topological photonic crystals with non-trivial Berry vortex in momentum space. Here, we show transverse angular momentum modes in silicon topological photonic crystals when considering transverse electric polarization. Excited by a chiral external source with either transverse spin or orbital angular momentum, robust light flow propagating along opposite directions was observed in several kinds of …
We design a photonic sphere-array nanoantenna (NA) exhibiting both strong directionality and wavelength selectivity. Although the geometric configuration of the photonic NA resembles a plasmonic Yagi-Uda NA, it has different working principles, and most importantly, reduces the inherent metallic loss from plasmonic elements. For any selected optical wavelength, a sharp Fano-resonance by the reflector is tunable to overlap spectrally with a wider dipole resonance by the sphere-chain director leading to the high directionality. The work provides design principles for directional and selective ph…
Photonic topological insulators are an interesting class of materials whose photonic band structure can have a bandgap in the bulk while supporting topologically protected unidirectional edge modes. Recent studies [1-6] on bianisotropic metamaterials that emulate the electronic quantum spin Hall effect using its electromagnetic analog are examples of such systems with relatively simple and elegant design. In this paper, we present a rotating magnetic dipole antenna, composed of two perpendicularly oriented coils, that can efficiently excite the unidirectional topologically protected surface wa…
One-way edge states at the surface of photonic topological insulators are of significant interest for communications, nonlinear and quantum optics. Moreover, when reciprocity is broken in a photonic topological insulator, these states provide protection against disorder, which is of particular importance for slow light applications. Achieving such a one-way edge state, however, requires the construction of a two-dimensional structure. Here, we show how unidiriectional Floquet bands can arise in purely one-dimensional, adiabatically-modulated dynamic systems, in contrasts with the higher dimens…
In this paper, the photonic quantum spin Hall effect (PQSHE) is realized in dielectric two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb lattice photonic crystal (PC) by stretching and shrinking the honeycomb unit cell. Combining two honeycomb lattice PCs with a common photonic band gap (PBG) but different band topologies can generate a topologically protected edge state at the combined junction. The topological edge states and their unidirectional transmission as the scatterers with triangular, pentagonal, and heptagonal shapes are researched. Meanwhile, the unidirectional transmission in an inverted Ω-shaped w…
We introduce a class of unidirectional lasing modes associated with the frozen mode regime of non-reciprocal slow-wave structures. Such asymmetric modes can only exist in cavities with broken time-reversal and space inversion symmetries. Their lasing frequency coincides with a spectral stationary inflection point of the underlying passive structure and is virtually independent of its size. These unidirectional lasers can be indispensable components of photonic integrated circuitry.
We develop a unified perspective of unidirectional topological edge waves in non-reciprocal media. We focus on the inherent role of photonic spin in non-reciprocal gyroelectric media, ie. magnetized metals or magnetized insulators. We first review the concept of a Maxwell Hamiltonian in non-reciprocal media, which immediately reveals that the gyrotropic coefficient behaves as a photon mass in two dimensions. Similar to the Dirac mass, this photonic mass opens bandgaps in the energy dispersion of bulk propagating waves. Within these bulk photonic bandgaps, three distinct classes of Maxwellian e…
Recently, Chumak et al. have demonstrated experimentally the time-reversal of microwave spin pulses based on non-adiabatically tuning the wave speed in a spatially-periodic manner. Here, we solve the associated wave equations analytically, and give an explicit formula for the reversal efficiency. We then discuss the implementation for short optical electromagnetic pulses and show that the new scheme may lead to their accurate time-reversal with efficiency higher than before.
Unidirectional transports have been observed in two-dimensional systems, however, so far they have not been experimentally observed in three-dimensional bulk materials. In this theoretical work we show that the recently discovered Weyl materials provide a platform for unidirectional transports inside bulk materials. With high experimental feasibility, a complex Dirac mass can be generated and manipulated in the photonic Weyl crystals, creating unidirectionally propagating modes observable in transmission experiments. Possible realization in (electronic) Weyl semimetals is also studied. We show…
Photonic crystal topological insulators host protected states at their edges. In the band structure these edge states appear as continuous bands crossing the photonic band gap. They allow light to propagate unidirectionally and without scattering. In practice it is essential to make devices relying on these effects as miniature as possible. Here we study all-dielectric photonic topological insulator particles (finite crystals) which do not require a magnetic field. In such particles the edge states' frequencies are discrete. Nevertheless, the discrete states support pseudospin-dependent unidir…
We explore the absorption and scattering properties of one dimensional parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$)-symmetric photonic crystal. In addition to the familiar transmittance and reflectance, we give the definition of the generalized absorptance to include the amplifying effect of the dielectric with negative imaginary part of the permittivity, moreover, we present the mathematical expressions of the transmittance, reflectances and absorptances from both sides of this photonic crystal with N periods in terms of the elements of the transfer matrix of the primitive cell. The complex band structure of…
Topological protection in photonics offers new prospects for guiding and manipulating classical and quantum information. The mechanism of spin-orbit coupling promises the emergence of edge states that are helical; exhibiting unidirectional propagation that is topologically protected against back-scattering. We directly observe the topological states of a photonic analogue of electronic materials exhibiting the quantum Spin Hall effect, living at the interface between two silicon photonic crystals with different topological order. Through the far-field radiation that is inherent to the states' …
We report a quantum-dot single-photon source (QD SPS) hybrid integrated on a silicon waveguide embedding a photonic crystal mirror, which reflects photons and enables efficient unidirectional output from the waveguide. The silicon waveguide is constituted of a subwavelength grating so as to maintain the high efficiency even under the presence of stacking misalignment accompanied by hybrid integration processes. Experimentally, we assembled the hybrid photonic structure by transfer printing, and demonstrated single-photon generation from a QD and its unidirectional output from the waveguide. Th…
Here, building on our previous work [Phys. Rev. B, 92, 125153, (2015)], it is shown that the propagation of unidirectional gapless edge states at an interface of two topologically distinct electromagnetic continua with a well-behaved asymptotic electromagnetic response is rigorously predicted by the bulk-edge correspondence principle. We work out detailed examples demonstrating that when the spatial-cut off of the nonreciprocal part of the material response is considered self-consistently in the solution of the relevant electromagnetic problem, the number of unidirectional gapless edge modes i…
We would like to clarify the misunderstanding caused by comment [arXiv:1306.5068 (2013)] on our article [Science 340, 328 (2013)]. The vectorial near-field interference effect described in our article is a fundamental physical process valid for all kinds of waves, both photonic and plasmonic, and the discovery of this effect is the main topic of the paper. The experiment using a slit in a metal film was one possible practical realization, but the effect has recently been experimentally validated in several other structures, as described in this reply.
We provide a numerical study showing that a bottom reflector is indispensable to achieve unidirectional emission from a photonic-crystal (PhC) nanolaser. First, we study a PhC slab nanocavity suspended over a flat mirror formed by a dielectric or metal substrate. We find that the laser's vertical emission can be enhanced by more than a factor of six compared with the device in the absence of the mirror. Then, we study the situation where the PhC nanocavity is in contact with a flat metal surface. The underlying metal substrate may serve as both an electrical current pathway and a heat sink, wh…
Cavity quantum electrodynamics studies light-matter interactions at single quanta level. Chiral photon-emitter coupling in photonic structures is characterized as unidirectional propagation locked by the local polarization of light. However, to realize the strong interaction of photon-emitter with direction-locked propagation, which will bring novel applications in nonreciprocal quantum devices, has not been reported yet. Here, we propose the coupled photonic crystal and metallic nanoparticle structure, where through strong local field with high helicity, the rate of circularly polarized photo…
A strategy is proposed to realize robust transport in time reversal invariant photonic system. Using numerical simulation and microwave experiment, we demonstrate that a chiral guided mode in the channel of a three-dimensional dielectric woodpile photonic crystal is immune to the scattering of a square patch of metal or dielectric inserted to block the channel. The chirality based robust transport can be realized in nonmagnetic dielectric materials without any external field.
Artificial defects embedded in periodic structures are important foundation for creating localized states with vast range of applications in condensed matter physics, photonics and acoustics. In photonics, localized states are extensively used to confine and manipulate photons. Up to now, all the proposed localized states are reciprocal and restricted by time reversal symmetry. Consequently, localization is bidirectional and photons at the allowed passband in the otherwise forbidden stop band are confined irrespective of the direction of incident beam. In this report, by embedding a single def…
Optical isolation is a long pursued object with fundamental difficulty in integrated photonics. As a step towards this goal, we demonstrate the design, fabrication, and characterization of on-chip wavelength-scale optical diodes that are made from the heterojunction between two different silicon two-dimensional square-lattice photonic crystal slabs with directional bandgap mismatch and different mode transitions. The measured transmission spectra show considerable unidirectional transmission behavior, in good agreement with numerical simulations. The experimental realization of on-chip optical…
Scalable quantum technologies require faithful conversion between matter qubits storing the quantum information and photonic qubits carrying the information in integrated circuits and waveguides. We demonstrate that the electromagnetic field chirality which arises in nanophotonic waveguides leads to unidirectional emission from an embedded quantum dot quantum emitter, with resultant in-plane transfer of matter-qubit (spin) information. The chiral behavior occurs despite the non-chiral geometry and material of the waveguides. Using dot registration techniques we achieve a quantum emitter determ…

The two-mode coupling model with energy splitting and formation of supermodes with different life times has been pervasive in almost every discipline of physics. We revisit this fundamental model from a different perspective of multipolar expansions, and manage to reveal a hidden dimension of it, by establishing a subtle connection between two seemingly unrelated properties of Q-factors and far-field angular radiation patterns. We discover that, in both regimes of negative and positive couplings, significant Q-factor enhancement can be attributed to dramatic redistributions of radiations that …
Much of the recent enthusiasm directed towards topological insulators as a new state of matter is motivated by their hallmark feature of protected chiral edge states. In fermionic systems, Kramers degeneracy gives rise to these entities in the presence of time-reversal symmetry (TRS). In contrast, bosonic systems obeying TRS are generally assumed to be fundamentally precluded from supporting edge states. In this work, we dispel this perception and experimentally demonstrate counter-propagating chiral states at the edge of a time-reversal-symmetric photonic waveguide structure. The pivotal step…
It is theoretically shown that storage and time-reversal of light pulses can be achieved in a coupled-resonator optical waveguide by dynamic tuning of the cavity resonances without maintaining the translational invariance of the system. The control exploits the Bloch oscillation motion of a light pulse in presence of a refractive index ramp, and it is therefore rather different from the mechanism of adiabatic band compression and reversal proposed by Yanik and Fan in recent works [M.F. Yanik and S. Fan, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 083901 (2004); Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 173903 (2004)].
The demand of single photon coupling to optical systems requires a suitable interface between negatively charged Nitrogen Vacancy (NV-) emitters in diamond to waveguides or optical circuits for applications in quantum network systems and in unidirectional emission with controlled photon states. Here, we propose a hybrid asymmetric structure of elliptically faceted (ELFA) diamond nanowire with Bragg Grating containing negatively charged NV center for efficient and unidirectional optical coupling to optical nanowire. Our calculations indicate that the structure can provide coupling efficiency of…
We investigate the properties of multidimensional parity-time symmetric periodic systems whose non-Hermitian periodicity is an integer multiple of the underlying Hermitian system's periodicity. This creates a natural set of degeneracies which can undergo thresholdless $\mathcal{PT}$ transitions. We derive a $\mathbf{k} \cdot \mathbf{p}$ perturbation theory suited to the continuous eigenvalues of such systems in terms of the modes of the underlying Hermitian system. In photonic crystals, such thresholdless $\mathcal{PT}$ transitions are shown to yield significant control over the band structure…
We demonstrate that in photonic gap antennas composed of an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) layer embedded within a high-index dielectric, hybrid modes emerge from the strong coupling between the ENZ thin film and the photonic modes of the dielectric antenna. These hybrid modes show giant electric field enhancements, large enhancements of the far-field spontaneous emission rate and a unidirectional radiation response. We analyze both parent and hybrid modes using quasinormal mode theory and find that the hybridization can be well understood using a coupled oscillator model. Under plane wave illuminati…
