We employ the intertwining operator technique to synthesize a supersymmetric (SUSY) array of arbitrary size $N$. The synthesized SUSY system is equivalent to a spin-$(N-1)/2$ under an effective magnetic field. By considering an additional imaginary magnetic field, we obtain a generalized parity-time-symmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonian that describes a SUSY array of coupled resonators or waveguides under a gradient gain and loss; all the $N$ energy levels coalesce at an exceptional point (EP), forming the isotropic high-order EP with $N$ states coalescence (EPN). Near the EPN, the scaling exponent of phase rigidity for each eigenstate is $(N-1)/2$; the eigen frequency response to the perturbation $ε$ acting on the resonator or waveguide couplings is $ε^{1/N}$. Our findings reveal the importance of the intertwining operator technique for the spectral engineering and exemplify the practical application in non-Hermitian physics.
We propose two non-Hermitian arrays consisting of $N=2l+1$ waveguides and exhibiting parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) or anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry for investigating light transfer dynamics based on $N$th-order exceptional points (EPs). The $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric array supports two $N$th-order EPs separating an unbroken and a broken phase with real and imaginary eignvalues, respectively. Light transfer dynamics in this array exhibits radically different behaviors, i.e. a unidirectional oscillation behavior in the unbroken phase, an edge-towards localization behavior in the broken phase, and a …
Coherent combination of emission power from an array of coupled semiconductor lasers operating on the same chip is of fundamental and technological importance. In general, the nonlinear competition among the array supermodes can entail incoherence and spectral broadening, leading to spatiotemporally unstable and multimode emission pattern and thus poor beam quality. Here, by harnessing notions from supersymmetric (SUSY) quantum mechanics, we report that the strategic coupling between a class III-V semiconductor microring laser array with its dissipative superpartner can be used to limit the nu…
New exactly solvable rationally-extended radial oscillator and Scarf I potentials are generated by using a constructive supersymmetric quantum mechanical method based on a reparametrization of the corresponding conventional superpotential and on the addition of an extra rational contribution expressed in terms of some polynomial $g$. The cases where $g$ is linear or quadratic are considered. In the former, the extended potentials are strictly isospectral to the conventional ones with reparametrized couplings and are shape invariant. In the latter, there appears a variety of extended potentials…
By using the technique of supersymmetric quantum mechanics, we study a quasi exactly solvable extension of the N-particle rational Calogero model with harmonic confining interaction. Such quasi exactly solvable many particle system, whose effective potential in the radial direction yields a supersymmetric partner of the radial harmonic oscillator, is constructed by including new long-range interactions to the rational Calogero model. An infinite number of bound state energy levels are obtained for this system under certain conditions. We also calculate the corresponding bound state wave functi…
We show that the existence of exceptional polynomials leads to the presence of non-trivial supersymmetry. The existence of these polynomials reveals several distinct isospectral potentials for the Schrödinger equation. All Schrödinger equations having Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials as their solutions, have non-trivial supersymmetric partners with corresponding exceptional polynomials as solutions.

We introduce a method for constructing Darboux (or supersymmetric) pairs of pseudoscalar and scalar Dirac potentials that are associated with exceptional orthogonal polynomials. Properties of the transformed potentials and regularity conditions are discussed. As an application, we consider a pseudoscalar Dirac potential related to the Schroeodinger model for the rationally extended radial oscillator. The pseudoscalar partner potentials are constructed under first- and second-order Darboux transformations.
The spectral, dynamical and topological properties of physical systems described by non-Hermitian (including $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric) Hamiltonians are deeply modified by the appearance of exceptional points and spectral singularities. Here we show that exceptional points in the continuum can arise in non-Hermitian (yet admitting and entirely real-valued energy spectrum) optical lattices with engineered defects. At an exceptional point, the lattice sustains a bound state with an energy embedded in the spectrum of scattered states, similar to the von-Neumann Wigner bound states in the continuum…
Exactly solvable rationally-extended radial oscillator potentials, whose wavefunctions can be expressed in terms of Laguerre-type exceptional orthogonal polynomials, are constructed in the framework of $k$th-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics, with special emphasis on $k=2$. It is shown that for $μ=1$, 2, and 3, there exist exactly $μ$ distinct potentials of $μ$th type and associated families of exceptional orthogonal polynomials, where $μ$ denotes the degree of the polynomial $g_μ$ arising in the denominator of the potentials.
A previous study of exactly solvable rationally-extended radial oscillator potentials and corresponding Laguerre exceptional orthogonal polynomials carried out in second-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics is extended to $k$th-order one. The polynomial appearing in the potential denominator and its degree are determined. The first-order differential relations allowing one to obtain the associated exceptional orthogonal polynomials from those arising in a ($k-1$)th-order analysis are established. Some nontrivial identities connecting products of Laguerre polynomials are derived from shape in…
We notice that, when a quantum system involves exceptional points, i.e. the special values of parameters where the Hamiltonian loses its self-adjointness and acquires the Jordan block structure, the corresponding classical system also exhibits a singular behaviour associated with restructuring of classical trajectories. The system with the crypto-Hermitian Hamiltonian H = (p^2+z^2)/2 -igz^5 and hyper-ellictic classical dynamics is studied in details. Analogies with supersymmetric Yang-Mills dynamics are elucidated.
Exceptional points are complex-valued spectral singularities that lead to a host of intriguing features such as loss-induced transparency - a counterintuitive process in which an increase in the system's overall loss can lead to enhanced transmission. In general, the associated enhancements scale with the order of the exceptional points. Consequently, it is of great interest to devise new strategies to implement realistic devices capable of exhibiting high-order exceptional points. Here, we show that high-order N-photon exceptional points can be generated by exciting non-hermitian waveguide ar…
The power of the disconjugacy properties of second-order differential equations of Schrödinger type to check the regularity of rationally-extended quantum potentials connected with exceptional orthogonal polynomials is illustrated by re-examining the extensions of the isotonic oscillator (or radial oscillator) potential derived in kth-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics or multistep Darboux-Bäcklund transformation method. The function arising in the potential denominator is proved to be a polynomial with a nonvanishing constant term, whose value is calculated by induction over k. The sign o…
The type III Hermite $X_m$ exceptional orthogonal polynomial family is generalized to a double-indexed one $X_{m_1,m_2}$ (with $m_1$ even and $m_2$ odd such that $m_2 > m_1$) and the corresponding rational extensions of the harmonic oscillator are constructed by using second-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The new polynomials are proved to be expressible in terms of mixed products of Hermite and pseudo-Hermite ones, while some of the associated potentials are linked with rational solutions of the Painlevé IV equation. A novel set of ladder operators for the extended oscillators is also…
Symmetry underpins our understanding of physical law. Open systems, those in contact with their environment, can provide a platform to explore parity-time symmetry. While classical parity-time symmetric systems have received a lot of attention, especially because of the associated advances in the generation and control of light, there is much more to be discovered about their quantum counterparts. Here we provide a quantum theory which describes the non-Hermitian physics of chains of coupled modes, which has applications across optics and photonics. We elucidate the origin of the exceptional p…
Exceptional points (EPs) are peculiar band singularities and play a vital role in a rich array of unusual optical phenomena and non-Hermitian band theory. In this paper, we provide a topological classification of isolated EPs based on homotopy theory. In particular, the classification indicates that an $n$-th order EP in two dimensions is fully characterized by the braid group B$_n$, with its eigenenergies tied up into a geometric knot along a closed path enclosing the EP. The quantized discriminant invariant of the EP is the writhe of the knot. The knot crossing number gives the number of bul…
