In this paper, we study the low Mach and Froude number limit for the all-time classical solution of a fluid-vacuum free boundary problem of one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations. No smallness of initial data for the existence of all-time solutions are supposed. The uniform estimates of solutions with respect to the Mach number and the Froude number are established for all the time, in particular for high order derivatives of the pressure, which is a novelty in contrast to previous results. The cases of "ill-prepared" initial data and "well-prepared" initial data are both discussed. It is interesting to see, either both the Mach number and the Froude number vanish, or the time goes to infinity, the limiting functions are the same, that is, the steady state. The main difficulty is that, the system is degenerate near the free boundary and contains singular terms. This result can be viewed as the first one on the low Mach and Froude numbers limit for free boundary problems. At the same time, we also establish the all-time existence of the classical solution with sharp convergent rates to the steady state, while previous results are only concerned with the weak or strong solutions.
We study the singular limit of a rotating compressible fluid described by a scaled barotropic Navier-Stokes system, where the Rossby number, the Mach number and the Froude number tend to 0 in a particular mutual rate while the Reynolds number tends to infinity. The inviscid planar Euler system is identified as the limit problem. The proof is based on the application of the method of relative entropies and careful analysis of oscillatory integrals describing the propagation of Rossby-acoustic waves.
We investigate the asymptotic limit of solutions to the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with the Mach number proportional to a small parameter $\varepsilon \to 0$, the Froude number proportional to $\sqrt{\varepsilon}$ and when the fluid occupies large domain with spatial obstacle of rough surface varying when $\varepsilon \to 0$. The limit velocity field is solenoidal and satisfies the incompressible Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation. Our studies are based on weak solutions approach and in order to pass to the limit in a convective term we apply the spectral analysis of the associated wave propa…
We study the 3-D compressible barotropic radiation fluid dynamics system describing the motion of the compressible rotating viscous fluid with gravitation and radiation confined to a straight layer. We show that weak solutions in the 3-D domain converge to the strong solution of the rotating 2-D Navier-Stokes-Poisson system with radiation for all times less than the maximal life time of the strong solution of the 2-D system when the Froude number is small or to the strong solution of the rotating pure 2-D Navier- Stokes system with radiation.
We study a singular limit of a scaled compressible Navier--Stokes--Coriolis system driven by both a deterministic and stochastic forcing terms in three dimensions. If the Mach number is comparable to the Froude number with both proportional to say $\varepsilon\ll 1$, whereas the Rossby number scales like $\varepsilon^m$ for $m>1$ large, then we show that any family of weak martingale solution to the $3$-D randomly forced rotating compressible equation (under the influence of a deterministic centrifugal force) converges in probability, as $\varepsilon\rightarrow0$, to the $2$-D incompressible N…
We identify the asymptotic limit of the compressible non-isentropic Navier-Stokes system in the regime of low Mach, low Froude and high Reynolds number. The system is driven by a long range gravitational potential. We show convergence to an anelastic system for ill-prepared initial data. The proof is based on frequency localized Strichartz estimates for the acoustic equation based on the recent work of Metcalfe and Tataru.
In this paper, we investigate the low Mach and low Froude numbers limit for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate, density-dependent, viscosity coefficient, in the strong stratification regime. We consider the case of a general pressure law with singular component close to vacuum, and general ill-prepared initial data. We perform our study in the three-dimensional periodic domain. We rigorously justify the convergence to the generalised anelastic approximation, which is used extensively to model atmospheric flows.
In this article our goal is to study the singular limits for a scaled barotropic Euler system modelling a rotating, compressible and inviscid fluid, where Mach number $=ε^m $, Rossby number $=ε$ and Froude number $=ε^n $ are proportional to a small parameter $ε\rightarrow 0$. The fluid is confined to an infinite slab, the limit behaviour is identified as the incompressible Euler system. For \emph{well--prepared} initial data, the convergence is shown on the life span time interval of the strong solutions of the target system, whereas a class of generalized \emph{dissipative solutions} is consi…
The Euler system in fluid dynamics is a model of a compressible inviscid fluid incorporating the three basic physical principles: Conservation of mass, momentum, and energy. We show that the Cauchy problem is basically ill-posed for the $L^\infty$-initial data in the class of weak entropy solutions. As a consequence, there are infinitely many measure-valued solutions for a vast set of initial data. Finally, using the concept of relative energy, we discuss a singular limit problem for the measure-valued solutions, where the Mach and Froude number are proportional to a small parameter.
We consider the compressible Navier - Stokes - Fourier - Poisson system describing the motion of a viscous heat conducting rotating fluid confined to a straight layer $ Ω_ε = ω\times (0,ε) $, where $ω$ is a 2-D domain. The aim of this paper is to show that the weak solutions in the 3D domain converge to the strong solution of the 2-D Navier - Stokes - Fourier - Poisson system $ω$ as $ε\to 0$ on the time interval, where the strong solution exists. We consider two different regimes in dependence on the asymptotic behaviour of the Froude number.
In this paper, we study the low Mach number limit of the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with revised Maxwell law. By applying the uniform estimation of the error system, we prove that the solutions of the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with time relaxation converge to that of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations as the Mach number tends to zero. Moreover, the convergence rates are also obtained.
We consider the compressible Euler system describing the motion of an ideal fluid confined to a straight layer $Ω_δ=(0,δ)\times\mathbb{R}^2, \ \ δ>0$. In the framework of dissipative measure-valued solutions, we show the convergence to the strong solution of the 2D incompressible Euler system when the Mach number tends to zero and $δ\rightarrow0$.
The local well-posedness and low Mach number limit are considered for the multi-dimensional isentropic compressible viscous magnetohydrodynamic equations in critical spaces. First the local well-posedness of solution to the viscous magnetohydrodynamic equations with large initial data is established. Then the low Mach number limit is studied for general large data and it is proved that the solution of the compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations converges to that of the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations as the Mach number tends to zero. Moreover, the convergence rates are obtained…
This study investigates nonlinear gravity waves in the compressible atmosphere from the Earth's surface to the deep atmosphere. These waves are effectively described by Grimshaw's dissipative modulation equations which provide the basis for finding stationary solutions such as mountain lee waves and testing their stability in an analytic fashion. Assuming energetically consistent boundary and far-field conditions, that is no energy flux through the surface, free-slip boundary, and finite total energy, general wave solutions are derived and illustrated in terms of realistic background fields. T…
In this paper, we propose a new approach to singular limits of inviscid fluid flows based on the concept of dissipative measure-valued solutions. We show that dissipative measure-valued solutions of the compressible Euler equations converge to the smooth solution of the incompressible Euler system when the Mach number tends to zero. This holds both for well-prepared and ill-prepared initial data, where in the latter case the presence of acoustic waves causes difficulties. However this effect is eliminated on unbounded domains thanks to dispersion.
We study the incompressible limit of solutions to the compressible barotropic Navier-Stokes system in the exterior of a bounded domain undergoing a simple translation. The problem is reformulated using a change of coordinates to fixed exterior domain. Using the spectral analysis of the wave propagator, the dispersion of acoustic waves is proved by the means of the RAGE theorem. The solution to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is identified as a limit.
The low Mach number limit for the full compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with general initial data is rigorously justified in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^3$. The uniform in Mach number estimates of the solutions in a Sobolev space are obtained on a time interval independent of the Mach number. The limit is proved by using the established uniform estimates and a theorem due to Métiver and Schochet [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 158 (2001), 61-90] for the Euler equations that gives the local energy decay of the acoustic wave equations.
We establish uniform with respect to the Mach number regularity estimates for the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes system in smooth domains with Navier-slip condition on the boundary in the general case of ill-prepared initial data. To match the boundary layer effects due to the fast oscillations and the ill-prepared initial data assumption, we prove uniform estimates in an anisotropic functional framework with only one normal derivative close to the boundary. This allows to prove the local existence of a strong solution on a time interval independent of the Mach number and to justify the…
The low Mach limit for 1D non-isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes flow, whose density and temperature have different asymptotic states at infinity, is rigorously justified. The problems are considered on both well-prepared and ill-prepared data. For the well-prepared data, the solutions of compressible Navier-Stokes equations are shown to converge to a nonlinear diffusion wave solution globally in time as Mach number goes to zero when the difference between the states at $\pm\infty$ is suitably small. In particular, the velocity of diffusion wave is only driven by the variation of temperatur…
In this note, we consider the homogenization of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in a periodically perforated domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Assuming that the particle size scales like $\varepsilon^3$, where $\varepsilon>0$ is their mutual distance, and that the Mach number decreases fast enough, we show that in the limit $\varepsilon\to 0$, the velocity and density converge to a solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Brinkman term. We strongly follow the methods of Höfer, Kowalczik and Schwarzacher [arXiv:2007.09031], where they proved convergence to Darcy's law for th…
The connection between the compressible flow of liquid crystals with low Mach number and the incompressible flow of liquid crystals is studied in a bounded domain. In particular, the convergence of weak solutions of the compressible flow of liquid crystals to the weak solutions of the incompressible flow of liquid crystals is proved when the Mach number approaches zero; that is, the incompressible limit is justified for weak solutions in a bounded domain.

In the present paper, we study a multiscale limit for the barotropic Navier-Stokes system with Coriolis and gravitational forces, for vanishing values of the Mach, Rossby and Froude numbers ($\rm Ma$, $\rm Ro$ and $\rm Fr$, respectively). The focus here is on the effects of gravity: albeit remaining in a low stratification regime ${\rm Ma}/{\rm Fr}\,\rightarrow\,0$, we consider scaling for the Froude number which go beyond the "critical" value $\rm Fr\,=\,\sqrt{\rm Ma}$. The rigorous derivation of suitable limiting systems for the various choices of the scaling is shown by means of a compensat…
We study the incompressible limit of the compressible non-isentropic magnetohydrodynamic equations with zero magnetic diffusivity and general initial data in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^d$ $(d=2,3)$. We first establish the existence of classic solutions on a time interval independent of the Mach number. Then, by deriving uniform a priori estimates, we obtain the convergence of the solution to that of the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations as the Mach number tends to zero.
In this paper we study the incompressible inviscid limit for a compressible micro-polar model. We prove that the weak solution of the compressible micro-polar system converges to the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations (Euler equations) in the limit of small Mach number (and vanishing viscosity).
We study the asymptotic limit of solutions to the barotropic Navier-Stokes system, when the Mach number is proportional to a small parameter $\ep \to 0$ and the fluid is confined to an exterior spatial domain $Ω_\ep$ that may vary with $\ep$. As $ε\rightarrow 0$, it is shown that the fluid density becomes constant while the velocity converges to a solenoidal vector field satisfying the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a limit domain. The velocities approach the limit strongly (a.a.) on any compact set, uniformly with respect to a certain class of domains. The proof is based on spectra…
We study a singular limit for the compressible Navier-Stokes system when the Mach and Rossby numbers are proportional to certain powers of a small parameter $\ep$. If the Rossby number dominates the Mach number, the limit problem is represented by the 2-D incompressible Navier-Stokes system describing the horizontal motion of vertical averages of the velocity field. If they are of the same order then the limit problem turns out to be a linear, 2-D equation with a unique radially symmetric solution. The effect of the centrifugal force is taken into account.
We consider the homogenization limit of the compressible barotropic Navier-Stokes equations in a three-dimensional domain perforated by periodically distributed identical particles. We study the regime of particle sizes and distances such that the volume fraction of particles tends to zero but their resistance density tends to infinity. Assuming that the Mach number is increasing with a certain rate, the rescaled velocity and pressure of the microscopic system converges to the solution of an effective equation which is given by Darcy's law. The range of sizes of particles we consider are exact…
We consider the Oberbeck--Boussinesq system with non--local boundary conditions arising as a singular limit of the full Navier--Stokes--Fourier system in the regime of low Mach and low Froude number. The existence of strong solutions is shown on a maximal time interval $[0, T_{\rm max})$. Moreover, $T_{\rm max} = \infty$ in the two dimensional setting.
We consider a singular limit problem for the Navier-Stokes system of a rotating compressible fluid, where the Rossby and Mach numbers tend simultaneously to zero. The limit problem is identified as the 2-D Navier-Stokes system in the ``horizontal'' variables containing an extra term that accounts for compressibility in the original system.
Consider two compressible immiscible fluids in 1D in the isentropic approximation. The first fluid is surrounded and in contact with the second one. As the Mach number of the first fluid vanishes, the coupled dynamics of the two fluids results as the compressible to incompressible limit and is known to satisfy an ODE--PDE system. Below, a characterization of this limit is provided, ensuring its uniqueness.
This work concerns the zero Mach number limit of the compressible primitive equations. The primitive equations with the incompressibility condition are identified as the limiting equations. The convergence with well-prepared initial data (i.e., initial data without acoustic oscillations) is rigorously justified, and the convergence rate is shown to be of order $ \mathcal O(\varepsilon) $, as $ \varepsilon \rightarrow 0^+ $, where $ \varepsilon $ represents the Mach number. As a byproduct, we construct a class of global solutions to the compressible primitive equations, which are close to the i…
In this paper we establish the uniform estimates of strong solutions with respect to the Mach number and the dielectric constant to the full compressible Navier-Stokes-Maxwell system in a bounded domain. Based on these uniform estimates, we obtain the convergence of the full compressible Navier-Stokes-Maxwell system to the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations for well-prepared data.
We consider a singular limit problem for the complete compressible Euler system in the low Mach and strong stratification regime. We identify the limit problem - the anelastic Euler system - in the case of well prepared initial data. The result holds in the large class of the dissipative measure-valued solutions of the primitive system. Applications are discussed to the driven shallow water equations.
In the present paper, we study the combined incompressible and fast rotation limits for the full Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with Coriolis, centrifugal and gravitational forces, in the regime of small Mach, Froude and Rossby numbers and for general ill-prepared initial data. We consider both the isotropic scaling (where all the numbers have the same order of magnitude) and the multi-scale case (where some effect is predominant with respect to the others). In the case when the Mach number is of higher order than the Rossby number, we prove that the limit dynamics is described by an incompressi…
This paper addresses the weak-strong uniqueness property and singular limit for the compressible Primitive Equations (PE). We show that a weak solution coincides with the strong solution emanating from the same initial data. On the other hand, we prove compressible PE will approach the incompressible inviscid PE equations in the regime of low Mach number and large Reynolds number in the case of well-prepared initial data. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first work to bridge the link between the compressible PE with incompressible inviscid PE.
We study singular limit for scaled barotropic Euler system modelling a rotating, compressible and inviscid fluid, where Mach and Rossby numbers are proportional to a small parameter $ε$. If the fluid is confined to an infinite slab, the limit behaviour is identified as a horizontal motion of an incompressible inviscid system that is analogous to the Euler system. We consider a very general class of solutions, named dissipative solution for the scaled compressible Euler systems and will show that it converges to a strong solution of that incompressible inviscid system.
The relationship between the compressible magnetohydrodynamic flows with low Mach number and the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic flows is investigated. More precisely, the convergence of weak solutions of the compressible isentropic viscous magnetohydrodynamic equations to the weak solutions of the incompressible viscous magnetohydrodynamic equations is proved as the density becomes constant and the Mach number goes to zero, that is, the corresponding incompressible limits are justified when the spatial domain is a periodic domain, the whole space, or a bounded domain.
We give an existence and asymptotic result for the so-called finite energy weak martingale solution of the compressible isentropic Navier--Stokes system driven by some random force in the whole spatial region. In particular, given a general nonlinear multiplicative noise, we establish the convergence to the incompressible system as the Mach number, representing the ratio between the average flow velocity and the speed of sound, approaches zero.
