Let $\mathcal{O}$ be the ring of integers of a number field, and let $n\geq 3$. This paper studies bi-interpretability of the ring of integers $\mathbb{Z}$ with the special linear group $\text{SL}_n(\mathcal{O})$, the general linear group $\text{GL}_n(\mathcal{O})$ and solvable group of all invertible uppertriangular matrices over $\mathcal{O}$, $\text{T}_n(\mathcal{O})$. For each of these groups we provide a complete characterization of arbitrary models of their complete elementary theories.
In this paper we prove that if $G(R)=G_π(Φ,R)$ $(E(R)=E_π(Φ, R))$ is an (elementary) Chevalley group of rank $> 1$, $R$ is a local ring (with $\frac{1}{2}$ for the root systems ${\mathbf A}_2, {\mathbf B}_l, {\mathbf C}_l, {\mathbf F}_4, {\mathbf G}_2$ and with $\frac{1}{3}$ for ${\mathbf G}_{2})$, then the group $G(R)$ (or $(E(R)$) is regularly bi-interpretable with the ring~$R$. As a consequence of this theorem, we show that the class of all Chevalley groups over local rings (with the listed restrictions) is elementary definable, i.\,e., if for an arbitrary group~$H$ we have $H\equiv G_π(Φ, …
Let $P$ be a finite $p$-group and $p$ be an odd prime. Let $\mathcal{A}_p(P)_{\geq2}$ be a poset consisting of elementary abelian subgroups of rank at least 2. If the derived subgroup $P'\cong C_p\times C_p$, then the spheres occurring in $\mathcal{A}_p(P)_{\geq2}$ all have the same dimension.
Let $(K,Δ)$ be a Hermitian form field and $n\geq 3$. We prove that if $σ\in U_{2n+1}(K,Δ)$ is a unitary matrix of level $(K,Δ)$, then any short root transvection $T_{ij}(x)$ is a product of $4$ elementary unitary conjugates of $σ$ and $σ^{-1}$. Moreover, the bound $4$ is sharp. We also show that any extra short root transvection $T_i(x,y)$ is a product of $12$ elementary unitary conjugates of $σ$ and $σ^{-1}$. If the level of $σ$ is $(0,K\times 0)$, then any $(0,K\times 0)$-elementary extra short root transvection $T_i(x,0)$ is a product of $2$ elementary unitary conjugates of $σ$ and $σ^{-1}$…
In this paper, we continue our study of abstract representations of elementary subgroups of Chevalley groups of rank $\geq 2.$ First, we extend our earlier methods to analyze representations of elementary groups over arbitrary associative rings, and as a consequence, prove the conjecture of Borel and Tits on abstract homomorphisms of the groups of rational points of algebraic groups for groups of the form ${\bf SL}_{n,D}$, where $D$ is a finite-dimensional central division algebra over a field of characteristic zero. Second, we apply our results to study deformations of representations of elem…
In the present paper, we prove the first part in the standard description of groups $H$ lying between $m$-th exterior power of elementary group $E(n,R)$ and the general linear group $GL_{\binom{n}{m}}(R)$. We study structure of the exterior power of elementary group and its relative analog $E\left(\binom{n}{m},R,A\right)$. In the considering case $n \geq 3m$, the description is explained by the classical notion of level: for every such $H$ we find unique ideal $A$ of the ring $R$. Motivated by the problem, we prove the coincidence of the following groups: normalizer of the exterior power of el…
Let $R$ be an infinite commutative ring with identity and $n\geq 2$ be an integer. We prove that for each integer $i=0,1,\cdots ,n-2,$ the $L^{2}$-Betti number $b_{i}^{(2)}(G)=0,$ $\ $when $G=\mathrm{GL}_{n}(R)$ the general linear group, $\mathrm{SL}_{n}(R)$ the special linear group, $% E_{n}(R)$ the group generated by elementary matrices. When $R$ is an infinite principal ideal domain, similar results are obtained for $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(R)$ the symplectic group, $\mathrm{ESp}_{2n}(R)$ the elementary symplectic group, $\mathrm{O}(n,n)(R)$ the split orthogonal group or $\mathrm{EO}(n,n)(R)$ the …
For a finitely generated group $G$ the Nielsen graph $N_n(G)$, $n\geq \operatorname{rank}(G)$, describes the action of the group $\operatorname{Aut}F_n$ of automorphisms of the free group $F_n$ on generating $n$-tuples of G by elementary Nielsen moves. The question of (non)amenability of Nielsen graphs is of particular interest in relation with the open question about Property $(T)$ for $\operatorname{Aut}F_n$, $n\geq 4$. We prove nonamenability of Nielsen graphs $N_n(G)$ for all $n\ge \max\{2,\operatorname{rank}(G)\}$ when $G$ is indicable, and for $n$ big enough when $G$ is elementary amenab…
In this note, we prove that $D_8\times C_2^{n-3}$ is the non-elementary abelian $2$-group of order $2^n$, $n\geq 3$, whose number of subgroups of possible orders is maximal. This solves a conjecture by Haipeng Qu [7]. A formula for counting the subgroups of an (almost) extraspecial $2$-group is also presented.
In the paper we prove that every automorphism of a (elementary) Chevalley group of type $A_l, D_l$, or $E_l$, $l\geqslant 2$, over a commutative local ring with 1/2 is standard, i. e., is the composition of inner, ring, graph and central automorphisms.
This paper proves the sandwich classification conjecture for subgroups of an even dimensional hyperbolic unitary group $U_{2n}(R,Λ)$ which are normalized by the elementary subgroup $EU_{2n}(R,Λ)$, under the condition that $R$ is a quasi-finite ring with involution, i.e a direct limit of module finite rings with involution, and $n\geq 3$.
Bob Oliver conjectures that if $p$ is an odd prime and $S$ is a finite $p$-group, then the Oliver subgroup $\X(S)$ contains the Thompson subgroup $J_e(S)$. A positive resolution of this conjecture would give the existence and uniqueness of centric linking systems for fusion systems at odd primes. Using ideas and work of Glauberman, we prove that if $p \geq 5$, $G$ is a finite $p$-group, and $V$ is an elementary abelian $p$-group which is an F-module for $G$, then there exists a quadratic offender which is 2-subnormal (normal in its normal closure) in $G$. We apply this to show that Oliver's co…
