Our aim is to determine the lower central series (LCS) and derived series (DS) for the braid groups of the sphere and of the finitely-punctured sphere. We show that for all n (resp. all n\geq 5), the LCS (resp. DS) of the n-string braid group B\_n(S^2) is constant from the commutator subgroup onwards, and that Γ\_2(B\_4(S^2)) is a semi-direct product of the quaternion group by a free group of rank 2. For n=4, we determine the DS of B\_4(S^2), as well as its quotients. For n \geq 1, the class of m-string braid groups B\_m(S^2) \ {x\_1,...,x\_n} of the n-punctured sphere includes the Artin braid groups B\_m, those of the annulus, and certain Artin and affine Artin groups. We extend results of Gorin and Lin, and show that the LCS (resp. DS) of B\_m is determined for all m (resp. for all m\neq 4). For m=4, we obtain some elements of the DS. When n\geq 2, we prove that the LCS (resp. DS) of B\_m(S^2) \ {x\_1,...,x\_n} is constant from the commutator subgroup onwards for all m\geq 3 (resp. m\geq 5). We then show that B\_2(S^2\{x\_1,x\_2}) is residually nilpotent, that its LCS coincides with that of Z\_2*Z, and that the Γ\_i/Γ\_{i+1} are 2-elementary finitely-generated groups. For m\geq 3 and n=2, we obtain a presentation of the derived subgroup and its Abelianisation. For n=3, we see that the quotients Γ\_i/Γ\_{i+1} are 2-elementary finitely-generated groups.
We find the minimum dilatation of pseudo-Anosov braids on n-punctured discs for 3 <= n <= 8. This covers the results of Song-Ko-Los (n=4) and Ham-Song (n=5). The proof is elementary, and uses the Lefschetz formula.
We give a complete description of finite braid group orbits in Aff(C)-character varieties of the punctured Riemann sphere. This is performed thanks to a coalescence procedure and to the theory of finite complex reflection groups. We then derive consequences in the theory of differential equations. These concern algebraicity of isomonodromic deformations for reducible rank two logarithmic connections on the sphere, the Riemann-Hilbert problem and F_D-type Lauricella hypergeometric functions.
The braid groups B_n can be defined as the mapping class group of the n-punctured disc. The Lawrence-Krammer representation of the braid group B_n is the induced action on a certain twisted second homology of the space of unordered pairs of points in the n-punctured disc. Recently, Daan Krammer showed that this is a faithful representation in the case n=4. In this paper, we show that it is faithful for all n.
We show that the group cohomology of the diffeomorphisms of the disk with $n$ punctures has the cohomology of the braid group of $n$ strands as the summand. As an application of this method, we also prove that there is no cohomological obstruction to lifting the "standard" embedding $\mathrm{Br}_{2g+2}\hookrightarrow \mathrm{Mod}_{g,2}$ to a group homomorphism between diffeomorphism groups.
Let B_n be the braid group on n > 3 strands. We prove that B_n modulo its center is co-Hopfian. We then show that any injective endomorphism of B_n is geometric in the sense that it is induced by a homeomorphism of a punctured disk. We further prove that any injection from B_n to B_n+1 is geometric. Additionally, we obtain analogous results for mapping class groups of punctured spheres. The methods use Thurston's theory of surface homeomorphisms and build upon work of Ivanov and McCarthy.
An embedding of the m-times punctured disc into the n-times punctured disc, for n>m, yields an embedding of the braid group on m strands B_m into the braid group on n strands B_n, called a geometric embedding. The main example consists of adding n-m trivial strands to the right of each braid on m strands. We show that geometric embeddings do not merge conjugacy classes, meaning that if the images of two elements in B_m by a geometric embedding are conjugate in B_n, the original elements are conjugate in B_m. We also show that the result does not hold, in general, for geometric embeddings of ma…
We compute the number of systoles, the shortest simple closed geodesics and 2-systoles, the second shortest simple closed geodesics on hyperbolic surfaces homeomorphic to once-punctured torus and four-punctured sphere.
We construct a certain cross product of two copies of the braided dual $\tilde H$ of a quasitriangular Hopf algebra $H$, which we call the elliptic double $E_H$, and which we use to construct representations of the punctured elliptic braid group extending the well-known representations of the planar braid group attached to $H$. We show that the elliptic double is the universal source of such representations. We recover the representations of the punctured torus braid group obtained in arXiv:0805.2766, and hence construct a homomorphism to the Heisenberg double $D_H$, which is an isomorphism if…
In this paper, we characterize non-hyperbolic 3-component links in the 3-sphere whose exteriors contain essential 3-punctured spheres with non-integral boundary slopes. We also show the existence of embeddings of some multibranched surfaces in the 3-sphere which satisfy some homological conditions to be embedded in the 3-sphere.
One of the most interesting questions about a group is if its word problem can be solved and how. The word problem in the braid group is of particular interest to topologists, algebraists and geometers, and is the target of intensive current research. We look at the braid group from a topological point of view (rather than a geometrical one). The braid group is defined by the action of diffeomorphisms on the fundamental group of a punctured disk. We exploit the topological definition of the braid group in order to give a new approach for solving its word problem. Our algorithm is faster, in co…
We prove a strong form of finite rigidity for pants graphs of spheres. Specifically, for any $n\geq4$, we construct a finite subgraph $X_n$ of the pants graph $P(S_{0,n})$ of the n-punctured sphere $S_{0,n}$ with the following property. Any simplicial embedding of $X_n$ into any pants graph $P(S_{0,m})$ of a punctured sphere is induced by an embedding $S_{0,n} \to S_{0,m}$.
We calculate the virtually-cyclic dimension of the mapping class group of a sphere with at most six punctures. As an immediate consequence, we obtain the virtually-cyclic dimension of the mapping class group of the twice-holed torus and of the closed genus-two surface.
This paper gives a new obstruction for ribbon-move equivalence of 2-knots. Let $K$ and $K'$ be 2-knots. Let $K$ and $K'$ are ribbon-move equivalent. One corollary to our main theorem is as follows. A 2-dimensional fibered knot whose fiber is the punctured 3-dimensional torus is not ribbon-move equivalent to any 2-dimensional knot whose Seifert hypersurface is a punctured homology sphere.
We give counterexamples to a question of Bowditch that if a non-elementary type-preserving representation $ρ:π_1(Σ_{g,n})\rightarrow PSL(2;\mathbb R)$ of a punctured surface group sends every non-peripheral simple closed curve to a hyperbolic element, then must $ρ$ be Fuchsian. The counterexamples come from relative Euler class $\pm1$ representations of the four-punctured sphere group. We also show that the mapping class group action on each non-extremal component of the character space of type-preserving representations of the four-punctured sphere group is ergodic, which confirms a conjectur…
Let $S_{0,n}$ be an $n$-punctured sphere. For $n\geq 4$, we construct a sequence $(\mathcal{X}_i)_{i\in\mathbb{N}}$ of finite rigid sets in the pants graph $\mathcal{P}(S_{0,n})$ such that $\mathcal{X}_1 \subset \mathcal{X}_2 \subset ...\subset\mathcal{P}(S_{0,n})$ and $\bigcup_{i\geq1}\mathcal{X}_i=\mathcal{P}(S_{0,n})$.
In this paper we show that the normal closure of the mth power of a half-twist has infinite index in the mapping class group of a punctured sphere. Furthermore, in some cases we prove that the quotient of the mapping class group of the punctured sphere by the normal closure of a power of a half-twist contains a free abelian subgroup. As a corollary we prove that the quotient of the hyperelliptic mapping class group of a surface of genus at least two by the normal closure of the mth power of a Dehn twist has infinite order, and for some integers m the quotient contains a free nonabelian subgrou…
We classify the topological types for the unions of the totally geodesic 3-punctured spheres in orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds. General types of the unions appear in various hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Each of the special types of the unions appears only in a single hyperbolic 3-manifold or Dehn fillings of a single hyperbolic 3-manifold. Furthermore, we investigate bounds of the moduli of adjacent cusps for the union of linearly placed 3-punctured spheres.
This paper aims to generalize Artin's ideas to establish an one-to-one correspondence between the orbit braid group $B^{orb}_n(\mathbb{C},\mathbb{Z}_p)$ and a quotient of a group formed by some particular homeomorphisms of a punctured plane. First, we find a faithful representation of $B^{orb}_n(\mathbb{C},\mathbb{Z}_p)$ in a finite generated group whose generators are corresponding to generators of fundamental group of the punctured plane, by examining the representation from $B^{orb}_n(\mathbb{C}^{\times},\mathbb{Z}_p)$ to the fundamental group is faithful. Then we investigate some character…
We give several new positive finite presentations for the pure braid group that are easy to remember and simple in form. All of our presentations involve a metric on the punctured disc so that the punctures are arranged "convexly", which is why we describe them as geometric presentaitons. Motivated by a presentation for the full braid group that we call the "rotation presentation", we introduce presentations for the pure braid group that we call the "twist presentation" and the "swing presentation". From the point of view of mapping class groups, the swing presentation can be interpreted as st…
Every closed hyperbolic geodesic $γ$ on the triply--punctured sphere $M =\widehat{\mathbb C} - \{0,1,\infty\}$ has a self--intersection number $I(γ) \ge 1$ and a combinatorial length $L(γ) \ge 2$, the latter defined by the number of times $γ$ passes through the upper halfplane. In this paper we show that $δ(γ) = I(γ) - L(γ) \ge -1$ for all closed geodesics; and that for each fixed $δ$, the number of geodesics with invariants $(δ,L)$ is given exactly by a quadratic polynomial $p_δ(L)$ for all $L \ge 4 + δ$.
In this paper, we study punctured spheres in two dimensional ball quotient compactifications $(X, D)$. For example, we show that smooth toroidal compactifications of ball quotients cannot contain properly holomorphically embedded $3$-punctured spheres. We also use totally geodesic punctured spheres to prove ampleness of $K_X + αD$ for $α\in (\frac{1}{4}, 1)$, giving a sharp version of a theorem of the first author with G. Di Cerbo. Finally, we produce the first examples of bielliptic ball quotient compactifications modeled on the Gaussian integers.
The kth finite subset space of a topological space X is the space exp_k X of non-empty finite subsets of X of size at most k, topologised as a quotient of X^k. The construction is a homotopy functor and may be regarded as a union of configuration spaces of distinct unordered points in X. We calculate the homology of the finite subset spaces of a connected graph Gamma, and study the maps (exp_k phi)_* induced by a map phi:Gamma -> Gamma' between two such graphs. By homotopy functoriality the results apply to punctured surfaces also. The braid group B_n may be regarded as the mapping class group…
Let n be greater than or equal to 3. We prove that the quaternion group of order 8 is realised as a subgroup of the sphere braid group B\_n(S^2) if and only if n is even. If n is divisible by 4 then the commutator subgroup of B\_n(S^2) contains such a subgroup. Further, for all n greater than or equal to 3, B\_n(S^2) contains a subgroup isomorphic to the dicyclic group of order 4n.
Let M be a compact, connected surface, possibly with a finite set of points removed from its interior. Let d,n be positive integers, and let N be a d-fold covering space of M. We show that the covering map induces an embedding of the n-th braid group B_n(M) of M in the (dn)-th braid group B_{dn}(N) of N, and give several applications of this result. First, we classify the finite subgroups of the n-th braid group of the real projective plane, from which we deduce an alternative proof of the classification of the finite subgroups of the mapping class group of the n-punctured real projective plan…
This is the first of at least two articles that describe the moduli spaces of pseudoholomorphic, multiply punctured spheres in R x (S^1 x S^2) as defined by a certain natural pair of almost complex structure and symplectic form. This article proves that all moduli space components are smooth manifolds. Necessary and sufficient conditions are also given for a collection of closed curves in S^1 x S^2 to appear as the set of |s| --> infinity limits of the constant s in R slices of a pseudoholomorphic, multiply punctured sphere.
We classify right-veering homeomorphisms of the once-punctured torus using the Burau representation of the 3-strand braid group. We show that reducible and periodic mapping classes in B_3 can be identified as right-veering by consideration of the reduced version of the Burau representation. Given any element beta in B_3, we give a method to quickly determine its action on the generators of the fundamental group of the 3-times punctured disk. This action which determines whether beta is right-veering, left-veering, or neither.
We find bounds for the length of the systole -- the shortest essential, non-peripheral closed curve -- for arithmetic punctured spheres with $n$ cusps, for $n=4$ through $n=12$, some of which were previously known due to Schmutz. This is shown using a correspondence between such surfaces and planar triangulations. We show that for $n=7,10,11$, arithmetic surfaces do not achieve the maximal systole length.
This article is dedicated to prove Buser's conjecture about Bers' constants for spheres with cusps (or marked points) and for hyperelliptic surfaces. More specifically, our main theorem states that any hyperbolic sphere with $n$ cusps has a pants decomposition with all of its geodesics of length bounded by a constant roughly square root of $n$. Other results include lower and upper bounds for Bers' constants for hyperelliptic surfaces and spheres with boundary geodesics.
This is the second of two articles that describe the moduli spaces of pseudoholomorphic, multiply punctured spheres in R x (S^1 x S^2) as defined by a certain natural pair of almost complex structure and symplectic form. The first article in this series described the local structure of the moduli spaces and gave existence theorems. This article describes a stratification of the moduli spaces and gives explicit parametrizations for the various strata.
In this paper, we generalize the tools that were introduced in [Dar19b] in order to study the Andreadakis problem for subgroups of IAn. In particular, we study the behaviour of the Andreadakis problem when we add inner automorphisms to a subgroup of IAn. We notably use this to show that the Andreadakis equality holds for the pure braid group on n strands modulo its center acting on the free group on n-1 generators , that is, for the (pure, based) mapping class group of the n-punctured sphere acting on its fundamental group.
Let $S_n$ be a punctured Riemann spheres $\mathbf{S}^2\backslash \{x_1,..., x_n\}$. In this paper, we investigate pseudo-Anosov maps on $S_n$ that are isotopic to the identity on $S_n\cup \{x_n\}$ and have the smallest possible dilatations. We show that those maps cannot be obtained from Thurston's construction (that is the products of two Dehn twists). We also prove that those pseudo-Anosov maps $f$ on $S_n$ with the minimum dilatations can never define a trivial mapping class as any puncture $x_i$ of $S_n$ is filled in. The main tool is to give both lower and upper bounds estimations for dil…
A string figure is topologically a trivial knot lying on an imaginary plane orthogonal to the fingers with some crossings. The fingers prevent cancellation of these crossings. As a mathematical model of string figure we consider a knot diagram on the $xy$-plane in $xyz$-space missing some straight lines parallel to the $z$-axis. These straight lines correspond to fingers. We study minimal number of crossings of these knot diagrams under Reidemeister moves missing these lines.
We consider the (pure) braid groups B_{n}(M) and P_{n}(M), where M is the 2-sphere S^2 or the real projective plane RP^2. We determine the minimal cardinality of (normal) generating sets X of these groups, first when there is no restriction on X, and secondly when X consists of elements of finite order. This improves on results of Berrick and Matthey in the case of S^2, and extends them in the case of RP^2. We begin by recalling the situation for the Artin braid groups. As applications of our results, we answer the corresponding questions for the associated mapping class groups, and we show th…
Do and Norbury found a so-called differential relation which relates the volume of the moduli space of singular surface with a cone point to that of a smooth surface obtained by forgetting the cone point. Their procedure is valid for cone angles less than $π$ by work of Tan, Wong and Zhang. We study the moduli space of a surface with a single cone point of angle ranging from $0$ to $2π$ using a coordinate system closely related to Penner's $λ$-lengths. We compute the action of the mapping class group in these coordinates, give an explicit expression for Wolpert's symplectic form and use this t…
For an appropriate choice of a $\mathbb{Z}$-grading structure, we prove that the wrapped Fukaya category of the symmetric square of a $(k+3)$-punctured sphere, i.e. the Weinstein manifold given as the complement of $(k+3)$ generic lines in $\mathbb{C}P^2$ is quasi-equivalent to the derived category of coherent sheaves on a singular surface $\mathcal{Z}_{2,k}$ constructed as the boundary of a toric Landau-Ginzburg model $(\mathcal{X}_{2,k}, \mathbf{w}_{2,k})$. We do this by first constructing a quasi-equivalence between certain categorical resolutions of both sides and then localising. We also …
We exhibit the traceless $SU(2)$ character variety of a 6-punctured 2-sphere as a 2-fold branched cover of ${\mathbb{C}}P^3$, branched over the singular Kummer surface, with the branch locus in $R(S^2,6)$ corresponding to the binary dihedral representations. This follows from an analysis of the map induced on $SU(2)$ character varieties by the 2-fold branched cover $F_{n-1}\to S^2$ branched over $2n$ points, combined with the theorem of Narasimhan-Ramanan which identifies $R(F_2)$ with ${\mathbb{C}} P^3$. The singular points of $R(S^2,6)$ correspond to abelian representations, and we prove tha…
Let $PB_n(S_{g,p})$ be the pure braid group of a genus $g>1$ surface with $p$ punctures. In this paper we prove that any surjective homomorphism $PB_n(S_{g,p})\to PB_m(S_{g,p})$ factors through one of the forgetful homomorphisms. We then compute the automorphism group of $PB_n(S_{g,p})$, extending Irmak, Ivanov and McCarthy's result to the punctured case. Surprisingly, in contrast to the $n=1$ case, any automorphism of $PB_n(S_{g,p})$, $n>1$ is geometric.
Let $Γ$ be a subgroup of $PSL(2,R)$ generated by three parabolic transformations. The main goal of this paper is to present an algorithm to determine whether or not $Γ$ is discrete. Historically discreteness algorithms have been considered within several broader mathematical paradigms: the discreteness problem, the construction and deformation of hyperbolic structures on surfaces and notions of automata for groups. Each of these approaches yield equivalent results. The second goal of this paper is to give an exposition of the basic ideas needed to interpret these equivalences, emphasizing rela…
Let n\geq 3. We classify the finite groups which are realised as subgroups of the sphere braid group B_n(S^2). Such groups must be of cohomological period 2 or 4. Depending on the value of n, we show that the following are the maximal finite subgroups of B_n(S^2): Z_{2(n-1)}; the dicyclic groups of order 4n and 4(n-2); the binary tetrahedral group T_1; the binary octahedral group O_1; and the binary icosahedral group I. We give geometric as well as some explicit algebraic constructions of these groups in B_n(S^2), and determine the number of conjugacy classes of such finite subgroups. We also …
We study the problem of determining the isomorphism classes of the virtually cyclic subgroups of the n-string braid groups B_n(S^2) of the 2-sphere S^2. If n is odd, or if n is even and sufficiently large, we obtain the complete classification. For small even values of n, the classification is complete up to an explicit finite number of open cases. In order to prove our main theorem, we obtain a number of other results of independent interest, notably the characterisation of the centralisers and normalisers of the finite cyclic and dicyclic subgroups of B_n(S^2), a result concerning conjugate …
Let $\H_g$ be a genus $g$ handlebody and $\MCG_{2n}(\T_g)$ be the $2n$-punctured mapping class group of $\T_g=\partial\H_g$. In this paper we study two particular subgroups of $\MCG_{2n}(\T_g)$ which generalize Hilden groups. As well as Hilden groups are related to plate closures of braids, these generalizations are related to Heegaard splittings of manifolds and to bridge decompositions of links. Connections between these subgroups and motion groups of links in closed 3-manifolds are also provided.
In this paper we compute the automorphism groups $\operatorname{Aut}(\mathbf{P}_n(Σ))$ and $\operatorname{Aut}(\mathbf{B}_n(Σ))$ of braid groups $\mathbf{P}_n(Σ)$ and $\mathbf{B}_n(Σ)$ on every orientable surface $Σ$, which are isomorphic to group extensions of the extended mapping class group $\mathcal{M}^*_n(Σ)$ by the transvection subgroup except for a few cases. We also prove that $\mathbf{P}_n(Σ)$ is always a characteristic subgroup of $\mathbf{B}_n(Σ)$ unless $Σ$ is a twice-punctured sphere and $n=2$.
The reduced Burau representation $V_n$ of the braid group $B_n$ is obtained from the action of $B_n$ on the homology of an infinite cyclic cover of the $n$-punctured disc. In this note, we calculate $H_*(B_n;V_n)$ as a module over the Laurent polynomial ring $\mathbb{Q}[t,t^{-1}]$.
This article was submitted to a volume under preparation, with Benson Farb as the editor, on the topic of open problems in surface mapping class groups. The braid group B_n is the mapping class group of an n-times punctured disk. The Iwahori-Hecke algebra H_n is a quotient of the braid group algebra of B_n by a quadratic relation in the standard generators. We discuss how to use H_n to define the Jones polynomial of a knot or link. We also summarize the classification of the irreducible representations of H_n. We conclude with some directions for future research that would apply mapping class …
We show that many normal subgroups of the braid group modulo its centre, and of the mapping class group of a sphere with marked points, have the property that their automorphism and abstract commensurator groups are mapping class groups of such spheres. As one application, we establish the automorphism groups of each term in the lower central series and derived series of the pure braid group. We also obtain new proofs of results of Dyer-Grossman and Orevkov, showing that the automorphism groups of the braid group and of its commutator subgroup are isomorphic. We then calculate the automorphism…
We give a survey of the theory of surface braid groups and the lower algebraic K-theory of their group rings. We recall several definitions and describe various properties of surface braid groups, such as the existence of torsion, orderability, linearity, and their relation both with mapping class groups and with the homotopy groups of the 2-sphere. The braid groups of the 2-sphere and the real projective plane are of particular interest because they possess elements of finite order, and we discuss in detail their torsion and the classification of their finite and virtually cyclic subgroups. F…
