Braid groups and Iwahori-Hecke algebras

This article was submitted to a volume under preparation, with Benson Farb as the editor, on the topic of open problems in surface mapping class groups. The braid group B_n is the mapping class group of an n-times punctured disk. The Iwahori-Hecke algebra H_n is a quotient of the braid group algebra of B_n by a quadratic relation in the standard generators. We discuss how to use H_n to define the Jones polynomial of a knot or link. We also summarize the classification of the irreducible representations of H_n. We conclude with some directions for future research that would apply mapping class group techniques to questions related to H_n.

Classical link invariants from the framizations of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra and the Temperley-Lieb algebra of type $A$

In this paper we first present the construction of the new 2-variable classical link invariants arising from the Yokonuma-Hecke algebras ${\rm Y}_{d,n}(q)$, which are not topologically equivalent to the Homflypt polynomial. Markov traces and knot invariants related to Iwahori-Hecke algebras of type B

In this paper we classify all Markov traces on Iwahori-Hecke algebras associated with the finite Coxeter groups of type B. We then use these traces for constructing Jones-type invariants for oriented knots inside a solid torus, and finally we give skein-theoretical interpretations.

Homological representations of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra

Representations of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type A_{n-1} are equivalent to representations of the braid group B_n for which the generators satisfy a certain quadratic relation. We show how to construct such representations from the natural action of B_n on the homology of configuration spaces of the punctured disk. We conjecture that all irreducible representations of Hecke_n can be obtained in this way, even for non-generic values of q.

Remarks on the faithfulness of the Jones representations

We consider the linear representations of the mapping class group of an n-punctured 2-sphere constructed by V. F. R. Jones using Iwahori-Hecke algebras of type A. We show that their faithfulness is equivalent to that of certain related Iwahori-Hecke algebra representation of Artin's braid group of n-1 strands. In the case of n=6, we provide a further restriction for the kernel using our previous result, as well as a certain relation to the Burau representation of degree 4.

Bowling ball representations of braid groups

In a remark in his seminal 1987 paper, Jones describes a way to define the Burau matrix of a positive braid using a metaphor of bowling a ball down a bowling alley with braided lanes. We extend this definition to allow multiple bowling balls to be bowled simultaneously. We obtain the Iwahori-Hecke algebra and a cabled version of the Temperley-Lieb representation.

Hecke algebra trace algorithm and some conjectures on weaving knots

Computing polynomial invariants for knots and links using braid representations relies heavily on finding the trace of Hecke algebra elements. There is no easy method known for computing the trace and hence it becomes difficult to compute the known polynomial invariants of knots using their braid representations. Braid groups in handlebodies and corresponding Hecke algebras

In this paper we study the kernel of the homomorphism $B_{g,n} \to B_n$ of the braid group $B_{g,n}$ in the handlebody $\mathcal{H}_g$ to the braid group $B_n$. We prove that this kernel is a semi-direct product of free groups. Also, we introduce an algebra $H_{g,n}(q)$, which is some analog of the Hecke algebra $H_n(q)$, constructed by the braid group $B_n$.

Inner products on the Hecke algebra of the braid group

We point out that the Homfly polynomial (that is to say, Ocneanu's trace functional) contains two polynomial-valued inner products on the Hecke algebra representation of Artin's braid group. These bear a close connection to the Morton-Franks-Williams inequality. In these structures, the sets of positive, respectively negative permutation braids become orthonormal bases. In the second case, many inner products can be geometrically interpreted through Legendrian fronts and rulings.

Dual braid monoids, Mikado braids and positivity in Hecke algebras

We study the rational permutation braids, that is the elements of an Artin-Tits group of spherical type which can be written $x^{-1} y$ where $x$ and $y$ are prefixes of the Garside element of the braid monoid. An isomorphism Theorem for Yokonuma--Hecke algebras and applications to link invariants

We develop several applications of the fact that the Yokonuma--Hecke algebra of the general linear group GL is isomorphic to a direct sum of matrix algebras associated to Iwahori--Hecke algebras of type A. This includes a description of the semisimple and modular representation theory of the Yokonuma--Hecke algebras of GL and a complete classification of all the Markov traces for them. Finally, from these Markov traces, we construct 3-variables polynomials which are invariants for framed and classical knots and links, and investigate their properties with the help of the isomorphism.
