Scalar hair of black holes in theories with a shift symmetry are constrained by the no-hair theorem of Hui and Nicolis, assuming spherical symmetry, time-independence of the scalar field and asymptotic flatness. The most studied counterexample is a linear coupling of the scalar with the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. However, in this case the norm of the shift-symmetry current $J^2$ diverges at the horizon casting doubts on whether the solution is physically sound. We show that this is not an issue since $J^2$ is not a scalar quantity, since $J^μ$ is not a diff-invariant current in the presence of Gauss-Bonnet. The same theory can be written in Horndeski form with a non-analytic function $G_5 \sim \log X$. In this case the shift-symmetry current is diff-invariant, but contains powers of $X$ in the denominator, so that its divergence at the horizon is again immaterial. We confirm that other hairy solutions in the presence of non-analytic Horndeski functions are pathological, featuring divergences of physical quantities as soon as one departs from time-independence and spherical symmetry. We generalise the no-hair theorem to Beyond Horndeski and DHOST theories, showing that the coupling with Gauss-Bonnet is necessary to have hair.
Shift-symmetric Horndeski theories admit an interesting class of Schwarzschild black hole solutions exhibiting time-dependent scalar hair. By making use of Lemaître coordinates, we analyze perturbations around these types of black holes, and demonstrate that scalar perturbations around black hole backgrounds inevitably have gradient instabilities. Taken together with previously established results, this newly-discovered instability rules out black holes with time-dependent scalar hair in Horndeski theories.
We establish the existence of hairy black holes in su(N) Einstein-Yang-Mills theories, described by N-1 parameters, corresponding to the nodes of the gauge field functions.
We analyze the mode stability of odd-parity perturbations of black holes with linearly time-dependent scalar hair in shift-symmetric Horndeski theories. We show that a large class of black hole solutions in these theories suffer from ghost or gradient instability, while there are some classes of solutions that are stable under linear odd-parity perturbations in the context of mode analysis.
We present a family of exact black-hole solutions on a static spherically symmetric background in second-order generalized Proca theories with derivative vector-field interactions coupled to gravity. We also derive non-exact solutions in power-law coupling models including vector Galileons and numerically show the existence of regular black holes with a primary hair associated with the longitudinal propagation. The intrinsic vector-field derivative interactions generally give rise to a secondary hair induced by non-trivial field profiles. The deviation from General Relativity is most significa…
In $U(1)$ gauge-invariant scalar-vector-tensor theories with second-order equations of motion, we study the properties of black holes (BH) on a static and spherically symmetric background. In shift-symmetric theories invariant under the shift of scalar $ϕ\to ϕ+c$, we show the existence of new hairy BH solutions where a cubic-order scalar-vector interaction gives rise to a scalar hair manifesting itself around the event horizon. In the presence of a quartic-order interaction besides the cubic coupling, there are also regular BH solutions endowed with scalar and vector hairs.
In scalar-vector-tensor theories with $U(1)$ gauge invariance, it was recently shown that there exists a new type of hairy black hole (BH) solutions induced by a cubic-order scalar-vector interaction. In this paper, we derive conditions for the absence of ghosts and Laplacian instabilities against odd-parity perturbations on a static and spherically symmetric background for most general $U(1)$ gauge-invariant scalar-vector-tensor theories with second-order equations of motion. We apply those conditions to hairy BH solutions arising from the cubic-order coupling and show that the odd-parity sta…
We study the spectrum of scalar $l=0$ quasi-normal frequencies of Anti-de-Sitter hairy black holes in four and five dimensional designer gravity theories of the Einstein-scalar type, arising as consistent truncations of $ \mathcal{N} = 8$ gauged supergravity. In the dual field theory, such hairy black holes represent thermal states in which the operator corresponding to the bulk scalar field is condensed, due to the multi-trace deformation associated with non-standard boundary conditions. We show that, in a particular class of models, the effective potential describing the vacua of the deforme…
This is a brief survey of the known black hole solutions in the theories of ghost-free bigravity and massive gravity. Various black holes exist in these theories, in particular those supporting a massive graviton hair. However, it seems that solutions which could be astrophysically relevant are the same as in General Relativity, or very close to them. Therefore, the no-hair conjecture essentially applies, and so it would be hard to detect the graviton mass by observing black holes.
Recently it was pointed out that in shift-symmetric scalar-tensor theories a black hole can have nontrivial scalar hair which depends linearly on time. We develop black hole perturbation theory for such solutions and compute the quadratic action of odd-parity perturbations. We show that around all the solutions known so far with such time-dependent scalar hair the perturbations trigger instabilities or are presumably strongly coupled.
We show that the no-hair theorem for scalar-tensor theories with bi-metric structure can be evaded. We find that hairy black hole solutions in the presence of an electric charge admit AdS, flat or dS asymptotics with spherical, flat, or hyperbolic base manifolds. Spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat black holes and asymptotically AdS configurations with any horizon topology are compatible with a regular scalar field on and outside the event horizon. The latter presents a rich thermodynamic behavior induced by the disformal factor that enters as a coupling parameter in the theory. In the …
We study static spherically symmetric black hole solutions with a linearly time-dependent scalar field and discuss their linear stability in the shift- and reflection-symmetric subclass of quadratic degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories. We present the explicit forms of the reduced system of background field equations for a generic theory within this subclass. Using the reduced equations of motion, we show that in several cases the solution is forced to be of the Schwarzschild or Schwarzschild-(anti-)de Sitter form. We consider odd-parity perturbations around general static sp…
Solutions-generating methods based on field redefinitions, such as conformal mapping, play an important role in investigating exact solutions in modified gravity. In this work, we explore the possibility to use disformal field redefinitions to investigate new regions of the solution space of DHOST theories. The crucial ingredient is to find suitable seed solutions to generate new exact ones for DHOST theories. We first consider a seed solution of the Einstein-Scalar system describing a naked singularity. Under suitable assumptions, we derive a no-go result showing that no black hole solution c…
We investigate the orbit equations and the eikonal equation for light respectively, under influence of the hairy black holes (asymptotically flat) in four dimensions. We consider two hairy black hole solutions with non-trivial potentials, and one of these solutions has Schwarzschild case as a smooth limit. Following to Landau and Lifshitz, we use the Hamilton-Jacobi method, and we show hairy corrections for periapsis shift, where the effect of the hair is to increase it. In the same way, using the eikonal equation we show the deflection of the light and the relevant scalar hair corrections. In…
No-hair theorems for scalar-tensor theories imply that the trivial scalar field configuration is the unique configuration around stationary black hole spacetimes. The most basic assumption in these theorems is that a constant scalar configuration is actually admissible. In this paper, we classify shift-symmetric Horndeski theories according to whether or not they admit the trivial scalar configuration as a solution and under which conditions. Local Lorentz symmetry and the presence of a linear coupling between the scalar field and Gauss-Bonnet invariant plays feature prominently in this classi…
In full Horndeski theories, we show that the static and spherically symmetric black hole (BH) solutions with a static scalar field~$ϕ$ whose kinetic term~$X$ is nonvanishing on the BH horizon are generically prone to ghost/Laplacian instabilities. We then search for asymptotically Minkowski hairy BH solutions with a vanishing $X$ on the horizon free from ghost/Laplacian instabilities. We show that models with regular coupling functions of $ϕ$ and $X$ result in no-hair Schwarzschild BHs in general. On the other hand, the presence of a coupling between the scalar field and the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) …
We investigate the existence of black hole and soliton solutions to four dimensional, anti-de Sitter (adS), Einstein-Yang-Mills theories with general semisimple connected and simply connected gauge groups, concentrating on the so-called "regular" case. We here generalise results for the asymptotically flat case, and compare our system with similar results from the well-researched adS $\mathfrak{su}(N)$ system. We find the analysis differs from the asymptotically flat case in some important ways: the biggest difference is that for $Λ<0$, solutions are much less constrained as $r\rightarrow\inft…
In four dimensions, we consider a generalized scalar-tensor theory where the coupling functions only depend on the kinetic term of the scalar field. For this model, we obtain a set of hairy Anti-de-Sitter black hole solutions, allowing us to calculate the computational complexity, according to the Complexity equals Action conjecture. To perform this, the system contains a particle moving on the boundary, corresponding to the insertion of a fundamental string in the bulk. The effect string is given by the Nambu-Goto term, analyzing the time development of this system. Together with the above, w…
Einstein-matter theories in which hairy black-hole configurations have been found are studied. We prove that the nontrivial behavior of the hair must extend beyond the null circular orbit (the photonsphere) of the corresponding spacetime. We further conjecture that the region above the photonsphere contains at least 50% of the total hair's mass. We support this conjecture with analytical and numerical results.
During the last two decades solutions of black holes with various types of "hair" have been discovered. Remarkably, it has been established that many of these hairy black holes are unstable-- under small perturbations the hair may collapse. While the static sector of theories admitting hair is well explored by now, our picture of the dynamical process of hair-shedding is still incomplete. In this Letter we provide an important ingredient of the nonlinear dynamics of hair collapse: we derive a universal lower bound on the lifetime of hairy black holes. It is also shown that the amount of hair o…

We study the asymptotically flat quasi-local black hole/hairy black hole model with nonzero mass of the scalar filed. We disclose effects of the scalar mass on transitions in a grand canonical ensemble with condensation behaviors of a parameter $ψ_{2}$, which is similar to approaches in holographic theories. We find that more negative scalar mass makes the phase transition easier to happen. We also obtain an analytical relation $ψ_{2}\varpropto(T_{c}-T)^{1/2}$ around the critical phase transition points implying a second order phase transition. Besides the parameter $ψ_{2}$, we show that metri…
We compute the holographic stress tensor of colored Lifshitz spacetimes following the proposal by Ross-Saremi for gravity duals of non-relativistic theories. For a well-defined variational principle, we first construct a finite on-shell action for the Einstein-Yang-Mills model in four dimensions with Lifshitz spacetime as a solution. We then solve the linearised equations of motion and identify the modes that preserve the asymptotically Lifshitz condition. Employing these modes, we also show that the stress tensor is finite, obeying the scaling and the diffeomorphism Ward identities, i.e., con…
We perform a thorough study of the thermodynamic properties of a class of Lovelock black holes with conformal scalar hair arising from coupling of a real scalar field to the dimensionally extended Euler densities. We study the linearized equations of motion of the theory and describe constraints under which the theory is free from ghosts/tachyons. We then consider, within the context of black hole chemistry, the thermodynamics of the hairy black holes in the Gauss-Bonnet and cubic Lovelock theories. We clarify the connection between isolated critical points and thermodynamic singularities, fin…
In this article we study a family of four-dimensional, $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity theories that interpolates between all the single dilaton truncations of the $\mathrm{SO}(8)$ gauged $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity. In this infinitely many theories characterized by two real numbers -- the interpolation parameter and the dyonic "angle" of the gauging -- we construct non-extremal electrically or magnetically charged black hole solutions and their supersymmetric limits. All the supersymmetric black holes have non-singular horizons with spherical, hyperbolic or planar topology. Some of these supers…
This is a short review of classical solutions with gravitating Yang-Mills fields in $D>4$ spacetime dimensions. The simplest SO(4) symmetric particlelike and SO(3) symmetric vortex type solutions in the Einstein-Yang-Mills theory in D=5 are considered, and their various generalizations with or without an event horizon, for other symmetries, in more general theories, and also in $D>5$ are described. In addition, supersymmetric solutions with gravitating Yang-Mills fields in string theory are discussed.
We study the thermodynamics of accelerating asymptotically AdS black holes with scalar hair in four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theories, which can be embedded in gauged supergravities for specific dilaton coupling constants. These accelerating black holes are described by charged dilaton C metrics, which have unique features but are almost unexplored before. Thermodynamics of slowly accelerating black holes is generalized to include scalar hair. We find that properly accounting for mixed boundary conditions for the scalar field leads to standard consistent first law and other thermod…
A numerical analysis shows that a class of scalar-tensor theories of gravity with a scalar field minimally and nonminimally coupled to the curvature allows static and spherically symmetric black hole solutions with scalar-field hair in asymptotically flat spacetimes. In the limit when the horizon radius of the black hole tends to zero, regular scalar solitons are found. The asymptotically flat solutions are obtained provided that the scalar potential $V(ϕ)$ of the theory is not positive semidefinite and such that its local minimum is also a zero of the potential, the scalar field settling asym…
The recently obtained hairy Kerr black holes, due to additional sources or surrounding fluid, like dark matter, with conserved energy-momentum tensor, have a deviation $α$ and primary hair $l_0$, apart from rotation parameter $a$ and mass $M$. In the wake of the \textit{Event Horizon Telescope} (\textit{EHT}) observations of the supermassive black hole M87*, a recent surge in interest in black hole shadows suggests comparing the black holes in general relativity (GR) and modified theories of gravity (MoG) to assess these models' differences. Motivated by this, we take on an extensive study of …
We present different Taub-NUT/Bolt-anti de Sitter (AdS) solutions in a shift-symmetric sector of Horndeski theory of gravity possessing nonminimal kinetic coupling of scalar fields to the Einstein tensor. In four dimensions, we find locally and asymptotically locally AdS solutions possessing nontrivial scalar field. In higher dimensions, analytical Taub-NUT/Bolt-AdS p-branes and solitons are obtained, supported by the existence of p Horndeski scalar fields with axionic profile. The thermodynamical properties are studied through Euclidean methods and it is found that the first law of thermodyna…
We find broad classes of exact 4-dimensional asymptotically flat black hole solutions in Einstein-Maxwell theories with a non-minimally coupled dilaton and its non-trivial potential. We consider a few interesting limits, in particular, a regular generalization of the dilatonic Reissner-Nordstr{ö}m solution and, also, smooth deformations of supersymmetric black holes. Further examples are provided for more general dilaton potentials. We discuss the thermodynamical properties and show that the first law is satisfied. In the non-extremal case the entropy depends, as expected, on the asymptotic va…
We study the perturbative behaviour of topological black holes in the presence of a cosmological constant and a scalar field coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet term. We calculate both analytically and numerically the quasi-normal modes of scalar perturbations in the extended scalar-tensor-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. In the case of small black holes we find a phase transition of the topological black hole to a hairy configuration.
We present a survey of the known cosmological and black hole solutions in ghost-free bigravity and massive gravity theories. These can be divided into three classes. First, there are solutions with proportional metrics, which are the same as in General Relativity with a cosmological term, which can be positive, negative or zero. Secondly, for spherically symmetric systems, there are solutions with non-bidiagonal metrics. The g-metric fulfills Einstein equations with a positive cosmological term and a matter source, while the f-metric is anti-de Sitter. The third class contains solutions with b…
In General Relativity and many modified theories of gravity, isolated black holes (BHs) cannot source massless scalar fields. Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton (EMd) theory is an exception: through couplings both to electromagnetism and (non-minimally) to gravity, a massless scalar field can be generated by an electrically charged BH. In this work, we analytically model the dynamics of binaries comprised of such scalar-charged ("hairy") BHs. While BHs are not expected to have substantial electric charge within the Standard Model of particle physics, nearly-extremally charged BHs could occur in models o…
Scalar-tensor theories of gravity where a new scalar degree of freedom couples to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant can exhibit the phenomenon of spontaneous black hole scalarization. These theories admit both the classic black holes predicted by general relativity as well as novel hairy black hole solutions. The stability of the hairy black holes is strongly dependent on the precise form of the scalar-gravity coupling. A radial stability investigation revealed that all scalarized black hole solutions are unstable when the coupling between the scalar field and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant is quadratic …
In this work, we consider the recently proposed well-defined theory that permits a healthy $D\to 4$ limit of the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet combination, which requires the addition of a scalar degree of freedom. We continue the construction of exact, hairy black hole solutions in this theory in the presence of matter sources, by considering a nonlinear electrodynamics source, constructed through the Plebański tensor and a precise structural function $\mathcal{H}(P)$. Computing the thermodynamic quantities with the Wald formalism, we identify a region in parameter space where the hairy black holes p…
In generalized Proca theories with vector-field derivative couplings, a bunch of hairy black hole solutions have been derived on a static and spherically symmetric background. In this paper, we formulate the odd-parity black hole perturbations in generalized Proca theories by expanding the corresponding action up to second order and investigate whether or not black holes with vector hair suffer ghost or Laplacian instabilities. We show that the models with cubic couplings $G_3(X)$, where $X=-A_μA^μ/2$ with a vector field $A_μ$, do not provide any additional stability condition as in General Re…
For a type of non-minimally coupled vector-tensor theories with Abelian gauge symmetry breaking in four-dimensional spacetime and correspondingly asymptotic non-AdS black hole solutions including a cosmological constant, we construct the appropriate boundary terms and derive the associated junction condition. In order to remove the divergences in the stress tensor which is localized on the spacetime boundary, we also involve the suitable surface counterterms into the total action. Using the counterterm method, we caculate the black hole mass. An implicit relation between the black hole carge $…
We calculate log corrections to the entropy of three-dimensional black holes with "soft hairy" boundary conditions. Their thermodynamics possesses some special features that preclude a naive direct evaluation of these corrections, so we follow two different approaches. The first one exploits that the BTZ black hole belongs to the spectrum of Brown-Henneaux as well as soft hairy boundary conditions, so that the respective log corrections are related through a suitable change of the thermodynamic ensemble. In the second approach the analogue of modular invariance is considered for dual theories …
In the context of massive gravity theories, we study holographic flows driven by a relevant scalar operator and interpolating between a UV 3-dimensional CFT and a trans-IR Kasner universe. For a large class of scalar potentials, the Cauchy horizon never forms in presence of a non-trivial scalar hair, although, in absence of it, the black hole solution has an inner horizon due to the finite graviton mass. We show that the instability of the Cauchy horizon triggered by the scalar field is associated to a rapid collapse of the Einstein-Rosen bridge. The corresponding flows run smoothly through th…
This article is intended to review the recent developments in the Horndeski theory and its generalization, which provide us with a systematic understanding of scalar-tensor theories of gravity as well as a powerful tool to explore astrophysics and cosmology beyond general relativity. This review covers the generalized Galileons, (the rediscovery of) the Horndeski theory, cosmological perturbations in the Horndeski theory, cosmology with a violation of the null energy condition, degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor theories and their status after GW170817, the Vainshtein mechanism in the Hornd…
We analyze (3+1)-dimensional black-hole space-times in spontaneously broken Yang-Mills gauge theories that have been recently presented as candidates for an evasion of the scalar-no-hair theorem. Although we show that in principle the conditions for the no-hair theorem do not apply to this case, however we prove that the `spirit' of the theorem is not violated, in the sense that there exist instabilities, in both the sphaleron and gravitational sectors. The instability analysis of the sphaleron sector, which was expected to be unstable for topological reasons, is performed by means of a variat…
We continue the study of spherically symmetric black hole solutions in torsion bigravity, a class of Einstein-Cartan-type gravity theories involving, besides a metric, a massive propagating torsion field. In the infinite-range limit, these theories admit asymptotically flat black hole solutions related to the presence of attractive fixed points in the asymptotic radial evolution of the metric and the torsion. We discuss these fixed points, and the way they are approached at large radii. Several phenomenological aspects of asymptotically flat torsion-hairy black holes are discussed: (i) locatio…
No-hair theorems exclude the existence of nontrivial scalar and massive vector hair outside four-dimensional, static, asymptotically flat black-hole spacetimes. We show, by explicitly building nonlinear solutions, that black holes can support massive graviton hair in theories of massive gravity. These hairy solutions are, most likely, the generic end state of the recently discovered monopole instability of Schwarzschild black holes in massive graviton theories.
We consider $f(R)$ gravity theories in the presence of a scalar field minimally coupled to gravity with a self-interacting potential in $(2+1)$-dimensions. Without specifying the form of the $f(R)$ function, we first obtain an exact black hole solution dressed with scalar hair with the scalar charge to appear in the $f(R)$ function and we discuss its thermodynamics. This solution at large distances gives a hairy BTZ black hole, and it reduces to the BTZ black hole when the scalar field decouples. In a pure $f(R)$ gravity supported by the scalar field, we find an exact hairy black hole similar …
We study linear perturbations about static and spherically symmetric black holes with a time-independent background scalar field in shift-symmetric Horndeski theories, whose Lagrangian is characterized by coupling functions depending only on the kinetic term of the scalar field $X$. We clarify conditions for the absence of ghosts and Laplacian instabilities along the radial and angular directions in both odd- and even-parity perturbations. For reflection-symmetric theories described by a k-essence Lagrangian and a nonminimal derivative coupling with the Ricci scalar, we show that black holes e…
