During the last two decades solutions of black holes with various types of "hair" have been discovered. Remarkably, it has been established that many of these hairy black holes are unstable-- under small perturbations the hair may collapse. While the static sector of theories admitting hair is well explored by now, our picture of the dynamical process of hair-shedding is still incomplete. In this Letter we provide an important ingredient of the nonlinear dynamics of hair collapse: we derive a universal lower bound on the lifetime of hairy black holes. It is also shown that the amount of hair outside of a black-hole horizon should be fundamentally bounded.
We present a numerical analysis of the stability properties of the black holes with scalar hair constructed by Herdeiro and Radu. We prove the existence of a novel gauge where the scalar field perturbations decouple from the metric perturbations, and analyse the resulting quasinormal mode spectrum. We find unstable modes with characteristic growth rates which for uniformly small hair are almost identical to those of a massive scalar field on a fixed Kerr background.
Recent numerical relativity simulations within the Einstein--Maxwell--(charged-)Klein-Gordon (EMcKG) system have shown that the non-linear evolution of a superradiantly unstable Reissner-Nordström black hole (BH) enclosed in a cavity, leads to the formation of a BH with scalar hair. Perturbative evidence for the stability of such hairy BHs has been independently established, confirming they are the true endpoints of the superradiant instability. The same EMcKG system admits also charged scalar soliton-type solutions, which can be either stable or unstable. Using numerical relativity techniques…
We study the instability of near extremal and extremal four-dimensional AdS charged hairy black hole to radial neutral massive and charged massless scalar field perturbations. We solve the scalar field equation by using the improved asymptotic iteration method and the time domain analysis and we find the quasinormal frequencies. For the charged scalar perturbations, we find the superradiance condition by computing the reflection coefficient in the low-frequency limit and we show that in the superradiance regime, which depends on the scalar hair charge, all modes of radial charged massless pert…
We obtain scalar hairy black holes from Einstein-Maxwell-conformally coupled scalar (EMCS) theory with the scalar coupling parameter $α$ to the Maxwell term. In case of $α=0$, the $α=0$ EMCS theory provides constant (charged) scalar hairy black hole and charged BBMB (Bocharova-Bronnikov-Melnikov-Bekenstein) black hole where the former is stable against full perturbations, while the latter remains unstable because it belongs to an extremal black hole. It is noted that for $α\not=0$, the unstable Reissner-Nordström black holes without scalar hair imply infinite branches of $n=0(α\ge 8.019),1(α\g…
We study the dynamics of unstable Reissner-Nordström anti-de Sitter black holes under charged scalar field perturbations in spherical symmetry. We unravel their general behavior and approach to the final equlibrium state. In the first part of this work, we present a numerical analysis of massive charged scalar field quasinormal modes. We identify the known mode families - superradiant modes, zero-damped modes, AdS modes, and the near-horizon mode - and we track their migration under variation of the black hole and field parameters. We show that the zero-damped modes become superradiantly unsta…
In this paper, we first consider null geodesics of a class of charged, spherical and asymptotically flat hairy black holes in an Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory with a non-minimal coupling for the scalar and electromagnetic fields. Remarkably, we show that there are two unstable circular orbits for a photon in a certain parameter regime, corresponding to two unstable photon spheres of different sizes outside the event horizon. To illustrate the optical appearance of photon spheres, we then consider a simple spherical model of optically thin accretion on the hairy black hole, and obtain the accr…
In regularized 4-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity derived from a Kaluza-Klein reduction of higher-dimensional EGB theory, we study the existence and stability of black hole (BH) solutions on a static and spherically symmetric background. We show that asymptotically-flat hairy BH solutions realized for a spatially-flat maximally symmetric internal space are unstable against linear perturbations for any rescaled GB coupling constant. This instability is present for the angular propagation of even-parity perturbations both in the vicinity of an event horizon and at spatial infinity…
We analyze (3+1)-dimensional black-hole space-times in spontaneously broken Yang-Mills gauge theories that have been recently presented as candidates for an evasion of the scalar-no-hair theorem. Although we show that in principle the conditions for the no-hair theorem do not apply to this case, however we prove that the `spirit' of the theorem is not violated, in the sense that there exist instabilities, in both the sphaleron and gravitational sectors. The instability analysis of the sphaleron sector, which was expected to be unstable for topological reasons, is performed by means of a variat…
We perturbatively construct a three-dimensional rotating AdS black hole with a real scalar hair. We choose the mass of a scalar field slightly above the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound and impose a more general boundary condition for the bulk scalar field at AdS infinity. We first show that rotating BTZ black holes are unstable against superradiant modes under our more general boundary condition. Next we construct a rotating hairy black hole perturbatively with respect to a small amplitude $ε$ of the scalar field, up to $O(ε^4)$. The lumps of non-linearly perturbed geometry admit only one Killing…
The d=5 Reissner-Nordstrom black hole becomes unstable when considered as a solution of Einstein--Yang-Mills--Chern-Simons theory. The existence of a marginally stable mode gives rise to a new branch of black holes with non-Abelian magnetic fields outside the horizon. These solutions carry a nonzero electric charge and have finite mass. We argue that these features manifest themselves both for Minkowski and (Anti-)de Sitter asymptotics. The properties of solutions in a de Sitter background are new to the present work and are emphasised. All solutions constructed have finite mass by virtue of t…
We present new soliton and hairy black hole solutions of Einstein-non-Abelian-Proca theory in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space-time with gauge group ${\mathfrak {su}}(2)$. For static, spherically symmetric configurations, we show that the gauge field must be purely magnetic, and solve the resulting field equations numerically. The equilibrium gauge field is described by a single function $ω(r)$, which must have at least one zero. The solitons and hairy black holes share many properties with the corresponding solutions in asymptotically flat space-time. In particular, all the solutions we st…
In this paper we study the properties of black holes and scalarons in Einstein gravity when it is minimally coupled to a scalar field $ϕ$ with an asymmetric potential $V(ϕ)$, constructed in [Phys. Rev. D \textbf{73} (2006), 084002] a few decades ago. $V(ϕ)$ has been applied in the cosmology to describe the quantum tunneling process from the false vacuum to the true vacuum and contains a local maximum, a local minimum (false vacuum) and a global minimum (true vacuum). In particular we focus on the asymptotically flat solutions, which can be constructed by fixing appropriately the local minimum …

A numerical analysis shows that a class of scalar-tensor theories of gravity with a scalar field minimally and nonminimally coupled to the curvature allows static and spherically symmetric black hole solutions with scalar-field hair in asymptotically flat spacetimes. In the limit when the horizon radius of the black hole tends to zero, regular scalar solitons are found. The asymptotically flat solutions are obtained provided that the scalar potential $V(ϕ)$ of the theory is not positive semidefinite and such that its local minimum is also a zero of the potential, the scalar field settling asym…
We study asymptotically flat black holes with massive graviton hair within the ghost-free bigravity theory. There have been contradictory statements in the literature about their existence -- such solutions were reported some time ago, but later a different group claimed the Schwarzschild solution to be the only asymptotically flat black hole in the theory. As a result, the controversy emerged. We have analyzed the issue ourselves and have been able to construct such solutions within a carefully designed numerical scheme. We find that for given parameter values there can be one or two asymptot…
The time-like and null-like geodesics around compact objects are some of the best tools to classify and understand the structure of a space-time. In this paper, we study the null geodesics around charged static dilaton black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity. The physical parameters for non-radial geodesics including the effective potential, effective force, radius of the photon sphere and impact parameter are obtained and effects of the charge parameter and dilaton coupling constant on these quantities are studied. Possible photon motions for different values of the impact parameter a…
For a static and spherically symmetric black hole, a photon sphere is composed of circular null geodesics of fixed radius, and plays an important role in observing the black hole. Recently, in an Einstein-Maxwell-scalar model with a non-minimal coupling between the scalar and electromagnetic fields, a class of hairy black holes has been found to possess two unstable and one stable circular null geodesics on the equatorial plane, corresponding to three photon spheres outside the event horizon. In this paper, we study quasinormal modes of the scalar field, which are associated with these circula…

We consider here the decay of unstable particles in geodesic circular motion around compact objects. For the neutron, in particular, strong and weak decay are calculated by means of a semiclassical approach. Noticeable effects are expected to occur as one approaches the photonic circular orbit of realistic black-holes. We argue that, in such a limit, the quasi-thermal spectrum inherent to extremely relativistic observers in circular motion plays a role similar to the Unruh radiation for uniformly accelerated observers.
In the present paper we study the scalar sector of the quasinormal modes of charged general relativistic, static and spherically symmetric black holes coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics and embedded in a class of scalar-tensor theories. We find that for certain domain of the parametric space there exist unstable quasinormal modes. The presence of instabilities implies the existence of scalar-tensor black holes with primary hair that bifurcate from the embedded general relativistic black-hole solutions at critical values of the parameters corresponding to the static zero-modes. We prove that …
We show that the asymptotically flat hairy black holes, solutions of the Einstein field equations minimally coupled to a scalar field, previously discovered by one of us, present mode instability against linear radial perturbations. It is also shown that the number of unstable modes is finite and their frequencies can be made arbitrarily small.
A Reissner-Nordström black hole (BH) is superradiantly unstable against spherical perturbations of a charged scalar field, enclosed in a cavity, with frequency lower than a critical value. We use numerical relativity techniques to follow the development of this unstable system -- dubbed a charged BH bomb -- into the non-linear regime, solving the full Einstein--Maxwell--Klein-Gordon equations, in spherical symmetry. We show that: $i)$ the process stops before all the charge is extracted from the BH; $ii)$ the system settles down into a hairy BH: a charged horizon in equilibrium with a scalar f…
Scalar-tensor theories of gravity where a new scalar degree of freedom couples to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant can exhibit the phenomenon of spontaneous black hole scalarization. These theories admit both the classic black holes predicted by general relativity as well as novel hairy black hole solutions. The stability of the hairy black holes is strongly dependent on the precise form of the scalar-gravity coupling. A radial stability investigation revealed that all scalarized black hole solutions are unstable when the coupling between the scalar field and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant is quadratic …
We construct black holes with scalar hair in a wide class of four-dimensional N=2 Fayet-Iliopoulos gauged supergravity theories that are characterized by a prepotential containing one free parameter. Considering the truncated model in which only a single real scalar survives, the theory is reduced to an Einstein-scalar system with a potential, which admits at most two AdS critical points and is expressed in terms of a real superpotential. Our solution is static, admits maximally symmetric horizons, asymptotically tends to AdS space corresponding to an extremum of the superpotential, but is dis…
We consider hairy black hole solutions of Einstein-Yang-Mills-Dilaton theory, coupled to a Gauss-Bonnet curvature term, and we study their stability under small, spacetime-dependent perturbations. We demonstrate that the stringy corrections do not remove the sphaleronic instabilities of the coloured black holes with the number of unstable modes being equal to the number of nodes of the background gauge function. In the gravitational sector, and in the limit of an infinitely large horizon, the coloured black holes are also found to be unstable. Similar behaviour is exhibited by the magnetically…
We investigate the thermodynamics of spherically symmetric black hole solutions in a four-dimensional Einstein--Yang-Mills-SU(2) theory with a negative cosmological constant. Special attention is paid to configurations with a unit magnetic charge. We find that a set of Reissner-Nordström--Anti-de Sitter black holes can become unstable to forming non-Abelian hair. However, the hairy black holes are never thermodynamically favoured over the full set of abelian monopole solutions. The thermodynamics of the generic configurations possessing a noninteger magnetic charge is also discussed.
The unexpected discovery of hairy black hole solutions in theories with scalar fields simply by considering asymptotically Anti de-Sitter, rather than asymptotically flat, boundary conditions is analyzed in a way that exhibits in a clear manner the differences between the two situations. It is shown that the trivial Schwarzschild Anti de Sitter becomes unstable in some of these situations, and the possible relevance of this fact for the ADS/CFT conjecture is pointed out.
We discuss the corrections to the lifetime of unstable elementary particles in some models of doubly special relativity. We assume that the speed of light is invariant and that the position coordinates transform in such a way to ensure the invariance of the deformed symplectic structure of phase space.
We show that four-dimensional black holes become stable below certain mass when the Einstein-Hilbert action is supplemented with higher-curvature terms. We prove this to be the case for an infinite family of ghost-free theories involving terms of arbitrarily high order in curvature. The new black holes, which are non-hairy generalizations of Schwarzschild's solution, present a universal thermodynamic behavior for general values of the higher-order couplings. In particular, small black holes have infinite lifetimes. When the evaporation process makes the semiclassical approximation break down (…
Near-extreme Reissner-Nordstrom-anti-de Sitter black holes are unstable against the condensation of an uncharged scalar field with mass close to the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. It is shown that a similar instability afflicts near-extreme large rotating AdS black holes, and near-extreme hyperbolic Schwarzschild-AdS black holes. The resulting nonlinear hairy black hole solutions are determined numerically. Some stability results for (possibly charged) scalar fields in black hole backgrounds are proved. For most of the extreme black holes we consider, these demonstrate stability if the ``effect…
We review the black hole solutions of the ghost-free massive gravity theory and its bimetric extension and outline the main results on the stability of these solutions against small perturbations. Massive (bi)-gravity accommodates exact black hole solutions, analogous to those of General Relativity. In addition to these solutions, hairy black holes -- solutions with no correspondent in General Relativity -- have been found numerically, whose existence is a natural consequence of the absence of Birkhoff's theorem in these theories. The existence of extra propagating degrees of freedom, makes th…
We investigate the fragmentation instability of hairy black holes in the theory with a Gauss$-$Bonnet(GB) term in asymptotically flat spacetime. Our approach is through the non-perturbative fragmentation instability. By this approach, we investigate whether the initial black hole can be broken into two black holes by comparing the entropy of the initial black hole with the sum of those of two fragmented black holes. The relation between the black hole instability and the GB coupling with dilaton hair are presented. We describe the phase diagrams with respect to the mass of the black hole solut…
Press and Teukolsky famously introduced the concept of a black hole bomb system: a scalar field scattering a Kerr black hole confined inside a mirror undergoes superradiant amplification that keeps repeating due to the reflecting boundary conditions at the mirror. A similar charged black hole bomb system exists if we have a charged scalar field propagating in a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole confined inside a box. We point out that scalar fields propagating in such a background are unstable not only to superradiance but also to a mechanism known as the near-horizon scalar condensation instabili…
In this paper we prove that the four-dimensional hyperbolic supersymmetric black holes can be unstable in the canonical ensemble. To this end, we work with an infinite class of $\,\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity theories interpolating between all the single dilaton truncations of the $\mathrm{SO}(8)$ gauged $\,\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity. Within these models, we study electrically charged solutions of two different kinds: supersymmetric hairy and extremal non-supersymmetric Reissner-Nordström black holes. We consider these solutions within the same canonical ensemble and show that, for suitable ch…
We perform the stability analysis for the scalarized charged black holes obtained from Einstein-Maxwell-conformally coupled scalar (EMCS) theory by employing the radial perturbations. The targeting black holes include a single branch of scalarized charged black hole with the coupling parameter $α>0$ inspired by the constant scalar hairy black hole as well as infinite branches of $n=0(α\ge 8.019),1(α\ge 40.84),2(α\ge 99.89),\cdots$ scalarized charged black holes found through the spontaneous scalarization on the Reissner-Nordström black hole. It turns out that the black hole in the single branc…
We construct an exact time-dependent solution in $D=4$, ${\cal N}=4$ gauged supergravity, where the gauge fields of the $U(1)\times U(1)$ subgroup of the $SO(4)$ carry independent conserved charges. The solution describes a decaying white hole that settles down to the final state as a static charged black hole. We analyze the global structure and lift the solution back to $D=11$ supergravity. We further extend the theory by adding an extra term in the scalar potential and obtain a more general class of collapse solutions. The result constitutes a charged generalization of the Roberts solution …
We investigate the possibility of dressing a four-dimensional black hole with classical scalar field hair which is non-minimally coupled to the space-time curvature. Our model includes a cosmological constant but no self-interaction potential for the scalar field. We are able to rule out black hole hair except when the cosmological constant is negative and the constant governing the coupling to the Ricci scalar curvature is positive. In this case, non-trivial hairy black hole solutions exist, at least some of which are linearly stable. However, when the coupling constant becomes too large, the…
Cuspy shadow was first reported for hairy rotating black holes, whose metrics deviate significantly from the Kerr one. The non-smooth edge of the shadow is attributed to a transition between different branches of unstable but bounded orbits, known as the fundamental photon orbits, which end up at the light rings. In searching for a minimal theoretical setup to reproduce such a salient feature, in this work, we devise a toy model with axisymmetry, a slowly rotating Kerr black hole enveloped by a thin slowly rotating dark matter shell. Despite its simplicity, we show rich structures regarding fu…
We consider $d\geqslant 4$ Einstein--(extended-)Yang-Mills theory, where the gauge sector is augmented by higher order terms. Linearizing the (extended) Yang-Mills equations on the background of the electric Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole, we show the existence of normalizable zero modes, dubbed non-Abelian magnetic stationary clouds. The non-linear realization of these clouds bifurcates the RN family into a branch of static, spherically symmetric, electrically charged and asymptotically flat black holes with non-Abelian hair. Generically, the hairy black holes are thermodynamically prefer…
