In the present paper we study the scalar sector of the quasinormal modes of charged general relativistic, static and spherically symmetric black holes coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics and embedded in a class of scalar-tensor theories. We find that for certain domain of the parametric space there exist unstable quasinormal modes. The presence of instabilities implies the existence of scalar-tensor black holes with primary hair that bifurcate from the embedded general relativistic black-hole solutions at critical values of the parameters corresponding to the static zero-modes. We prove that such scalar-tensor black holes really exist by solving the full system of scalar-tensor field equations for the static, spherically symmetric case. The obtained solutions for the hairy black holes are non-unique and they are in one to one correspondence with the bounded states of the potential governing the linear perturbations of the scalar field. The stability of the non-unique hairy black holes is also examined and we find that the solutions for which the scalar field has zeros are unstable against radial perturbations. The paper ends with a discussion on possible formulations of a new classification conjecture.
We prove the uniqueness theorem for static higher dimensional charged black holes spacetime containing an asymptotically flat spacelike hypersurface with compact interior and with both degenerate and non-degenerate components of the event horizon.
Motivated by the string landscape, inflation may happen on a high dimensional complicated potential. We propose a new way to construct some high dimensional random potentials, and study inflation on top of that, for up to 50-dimensions in field space. Especially, random bifurcations of classical inflationary trajectory are studied. It is shown that the bifurcation probability increases as a function of number of dimensions. Those random bifurcations are not consistent with observations, and dramatically limit the parameter space of inflation on a complicated landscape. For example, in 10 dimen…
We show a uniqueness theorem for charged dipole rotating black rings in the bosonic sector of five-dimensional minimal supergravity, generalizing our previous work [arXiv:0901.4724] on the uniqueness of charged rotating black holes with topologically spherical horizon in the same theory. More precisely, assuming the existence of two commuting axial Killing vector fields, we prove that an asymptotically flat, stationary charged rotating black hole with non-degenerate connected event horizon of cross-section topology S^1XS^2 in the five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory-if exists-…
We study a five-dimensional spacetime admitting, in the presence of torsion, a non-degenerate conformal Killing-Yano 2-form which is closed with respect to both the usual exterior differentiation and the exterior differentiation with torsion. Furthermore, assuming that the torsion is closed and co-closed with respect to the exterior differentiation with torsion, we prove that such a spacetime is the only spacetime given by the Chong-Cvetic-Lu-Pope solution for stationary, rotating charged black holes with two independent angular momenta in five-dimensional minimal gauged supergravity.
In this work we present some new results obtained in a study of the phase diagram of charged compact boson stars in a theory involving a complex scalar field with a conical potential coupled to a U(1) gauge field and gravity. We here obtain new bifurcation points in this model. We present a detailed discussion of the various regions of the phase diagram with respect to the bifurcation points. The theory is seen to contain rich physics in a particular domain of the phase diagram.
In this work we present some new results which we have obtained in a study of the phase diagram of charged compact boson stars in the theory involving massive complex scalar fields coupled to the U(1) gauge field and gravity in a conical potential in the presence of a cosmological constant $Λ$ which we treat as a free parameter taking positive and negative values and thereby allowing us to study the theory in the de Sitter and Anti de Sitter spaces respectively. In our studies, we obtain four bifurcation points (possibility of more bifurcation points being not ruled out) in the de Sitter regio…
We make use of the black hole holograph construction of [I. Rácz, Stationary black holes as holographs, Class. Quantum Grav. 31, 035006 (2014)] to analyse the existence of Killing spinors in the domain of dependence of the horizons of distorted black holes. In particular, we provide conditions on the bifurcation sphere ensuring the existence of a Killing spinor. These conditions can be understood as restrictions on the curvature of the bifurcation sphere and ensure the existence of an axial Killing vector on the 2-surface. We obtain the most general 2-dimensional metric on the bifurcation sphe…
Compact boson stars, whose scalar field vanishes identically in the exterior region, arise in a theory involving a {\it massless} complex scalar field with a conical potential, when coupled to gravity. Their charged compact generalizations, obtained in the presence of a U(1) gauge field, exhibit further interesting features. On the one hand, charged compact boson shells can arise, whose scalar field vanishes also in the central region, while on the other hand, the domain of existence of charged compact boson stars exhibits bifurcation points. First 2D phase diagrams have been studied before. H…
A relatively recent study by Mars and Senovilla provided us with a uniqueness result for the exterior vacuum gravitational field generated by an isolated distribution of matter in axial rotation in equilibrium in General Relativity. The generalisation to exterior electrovacuum gravitational fields, to include charged rotating objects, is presented here.

Based on the conformal energy theorem we prove the uniqueness theorem for static higher dimensional electrically and magnetically charged black holes being the solution of Einstein (n-2)-gauge forms equations of motion. Black hole spacetime contains an asymptotically flat spacelike hypersurface with compact interior and non-degenerate components of the event horizon.
The uniqueness theorem for static charged higher dimensional black hole containing an asymptotically flat spacelike hypersurface with compact interior and with both degenerate and non-degenerate components of event horizon is proposed. By studies of the near-horizon geometry of degenerate horizons one was able to eliminate the previous restriction concerning the inequality fulfilled by the charges of the adequate components of the aforementioned horizons.
The Arnowitt-Deser-Misner formalism is used to derive variations of mass, angular momentum and canonical energy for Einstein-Maxwell {\it dark matter} gravity in which the auxiliary gauge field coupled via kinetic mixing term to the ordinary Maxwell one, which mimics properties of {\it hidden sector}. Inspection of the initial data for the manifold with an interior boundary, having topology of $S^2$, enables us to find the generalised first law of black hole thermodynamics in the aforementioned theory. It has been revealed that the stationary black hole solution being subject to the condition …
We show uniqueness theorems for Kaluza-Klein black holes in the bosonic sector of five-dimensional minimal supergravity. More precisely, under the assumptions of the existence of two commuting axial isometries and a non-degenerate connected event horizon of the cross section topology S^3, or lens space, we prove that a stationary charged rotating Kaluza-Klein black hole in five-dimensional minimal supergravity is uniquely characterized by its mass, two independent angular momenta, electric charge, magnetic flux and nut charge, provided that there does not exist any nuts in the domain of outer …
I review the black hole uniqueness theorem and the no hair theorems established for physical black hole stationary states by the early 80'. This review presents the original and decisive work of Carter, Robinson, Mazur and Bunting on the problem of no bifurcation and uniqueness of physical black holes. Its original version was written only few years after my proof of the Kerr-Newman et al. black hole uniqueness theorem has appeared in print. The proof of the black hole uniqueness theorem relies heavily on the positivity properties of nonlinear sigma models on the Riemannian noncompact symmetri…
In order to address the issues raised by the recent discovery of non-uniqueness of black holes in five dimensions, we construct a solution of string theory at low energies describing a five-dimensional spinning black ring with three charges that can be interpreted as D1-brane, D5-brane, and momentum charges. The solution possesses closed timelike curves (CTCs) and other pathologies, whose origin we clarify. These pathologies can be avoided by setting any one of the charges, e.g. the momentum, to zero. We argue that the D1-D5-charged black ring, lifted to six dimensions, describes the thermal e…
We consider a spherically symmetric characteristic initial value problem for the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar field equations. On the initial outgoing characteristic, the data is assumed to satisfy the Price law decay widely believed to hold on an event horizon arising from the collapse of an asymptotically flat Cauchy surface. We establish that the heuristic mass inflation scenario put forth by Israel and Poisson is mathematically correct in the context of this initial value problem. In particular, the maximal domain of development has a future boundary, over which the spacetime is extendible as a…
We show, in detail, that the only non-trivial black hole (BH) solutions for a neutral as well as a charged spherically symmetric space-times, using the class ${\textit F(R)}={\textit R}\pm{\textit F_1 (R)} $, must-have metric potentials in the form $h(r)=\frac{1}{2}-\frac{2M}{r}$ and $h(r)=\frac{1}{2}-\frac{2M}{r}+\frac{q^2}{r^2}$. These BHs have a non-trivial form of Ricci scalar, i.e., $R=\frac{1}{r^2}$ and the form of ${\textit F_1 (R)}=\mp\frac{\sqrt{\textit R}} {3M} $. We repeat the same procedure for (Anti-)de Sitter, (A)dS, space-time and got the metric potentials of neutral as well as …
It has been recently found that for the near extremal Kerr black holes appearing of Zero Damped Modes (accompanied by qusinormal mode branching) signifies about inapplicability of the regime of small perturbations and the onset of turbulence. Here we show that this phenomena is not limited by Kerr or Kerr-Newman solutions only, but also takes place for rotating dilatonic black holes for which we have found Zero Damped Modes both numerically and analytically. We have also shown that, contrary to recent claims, there is no instability of a charged massive scalar field in the background of the ro…
We consider an augmented Einstein-Maxwell-scalar model including an axionic-type coupling between the scalar and electromagnetic field. We study dyonic black hole solutions in this model. For the canonical axionic coupling emerging from high energy physics, all charged black holes have axion hair. We present their domain of existence and investigate some physical properties. For other axionic-type couplings, two classes of black hole solutions may co-exist in the model: scalar-free Reissner-Nordström black holes and scalarised black holes. We show that in some region of the parameter space, th…
Modern cosmological models are constructed in the framework of thermodynamic approaches developed within a Van der Waals-Maxwell theory of the first-order phase transitions. In the present work we study a geometrothermodynamics of two-dimensional first-order phase transition with the distribution of relaxation times in a configuration space which describes a spacetime with Newman-Unti-Tamburino-like metric. We utilized the geometrothermodynamical approach to construct the model of a charged generalized-NUT black hole. We reveal following features of the black-hole phase transition: there are s…
We consider the stability of black holes within both classical general relativity and the semiclassical thermodynamic description. In particular, we study linearised perturbations and their contribution to the gravitational partition function, addressing technical issues for charged (Reissner-Nordstrom) and rotating (Kerr-AdS) black holes. Exploring the connection between classical and thermodynamic stability, we find classical instabilities of Myers-Perry black holes and bifurcations to new black hole families.
Stationary black holes in 5-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory possess surprising properties. When considering the Chern-Simons coefficient $λ$ as a parameter, two critical values of $λ$ appear: the supergravity value $λ_{\rm SG}=1$, and the value $λ=2$. At $λ=1$, supersymmetric black holes with vanishing horizon angular velocity, but finite angular momentum exist. As $λ$ increases beyond $λ_{\rm SG}$ a rotational instability arises, and counterrotating black holes appear, whose horizon rotates in the opposite sense to the angular momentum. Thus supersymmetry is associated with t…
We consider boson shells in scalar electrodynamics coupled to Einstein gravity. The interior of the shells can be empty space, or harbour a black hole or a naked singularity. We analyze the properties of these types of solutions and determine their domains of existence. We investigate the energy conditions and present mass formulae for the composite black hole--boson shell systems. We demonstrate that these types of solutions violate black hole uniqueness.
In a recent paper, the authors established the uniqueness of photon spheres in static vacuum asymptotically flat spacetimes by adapting Bunting and Masood-ul-Alam's proof of static vacuum black hole uniqueness. Here, we establish uniqueness of suitably defined sub-extremal photon spheres in static electro-vacuum asymptotically flat spacetimes by adapting the argument of Masood-ul-Alam. As a consequence of our result, we can rule out the existence of electrostatic configurations involving multiple "very compact" electrically charged bodies and sub-extremal black holes.
We consider the problem of uniqueness of static and asymptotically flat Einstein-Maxwell spacetimes with a photon sphere $P^3$. We are using a naturally modified definition of a photon sphere for electrically charged spacetimes with the additional property that the one-form $ι_ξF$ is normal to the photon sphere. For simplicity we are restricting ourselves to the case of zero magnetic charge and assume that the lapse function regularly foliates the spacetime outside the photon sphere. With this information we prove that $P^3$ has constant mean curvature and constant scalar curvature. We also de…
In this paper, we studied Einsteinian quartic gravity minimally coupled to electrodynamics in four dimensions. First, by variation action, we obtain the field equations, and by integration, we obtain a nonlinear third-order differential equation for the metric function and as well as the electromagnetic potential. Then, in the context of the Maxwell field, we discussed the conditions under which the charged black hole exists. Then, we have demonstrated the thermodynamics and stability of the solution for the case of positive coupling of quartic theory. Finally, we showed that the charged black…
It was recently shown, that in a class of tensor-multi-scalar theories of gravity with a nontrivial target space metric, there exist scalarized neutron star solutions. An important property of these compact objects is that the scalar charge is zero and therefore, the binary pulsar experiments can not impose constraints based on the absence of scalar dipole radiation. Moreover, the structure of the solutions is very complicated. For a fixed central energy density up to three neutron star solutions can exist -- one general relativistic and two scalarized, that is quite different from the scalari…
It is well-known that solutions to the conformal formulation of the Einstein constraint equations are unique in the cases of constant mean curvature (CMC) and near constant mean curvature (near-CMC). However, the new far-from-constant mean curvature (far-from-CMC) existence results due to Holst, Nagy, and Tsogtgerel in 2008, to Maxwell in 2009, and to Dahl, Gicquaud and Humbert in 2010, are based on degree theory rather than on the (uniqueness-providing) contraction arguments that had been used for all non-CMC existence results prior to 2008. In fact, Maxwell demonstrated in 2011 that solution…
We study various mathematical aspects of the charged rotating black hole with two equal-magnitude angular momenta in five dimensions. We introduce a coordinate system that is regular on the horizon and in which Einstein-Maxwell equations reduce to an autonomous system of ODEs. Employing Bondi and Kruskal-like coordinates, we analyze the geometric regularity of the black hole metric at infinity and the horizon, respectively, and the well-posedness of the corresponding boundary value problem. We also study the algebraic types of the electromagnetic and curvature tensors. While outside the horizo…
We consider boson stars and black holes in scalar electrodynamics with a V-shaped scalar potential. The boson stars come in two types, having either ball-like or shell-like charge density. We analyze the properties of these solutions and determine their domains of existence. When mass and charge become equal, the space-times develop a throat. The shell-like solutions need not be globally regular, but may possess a horizon. The space-times then consist of a Schwarzschild-type black hole in the interior, surrounded by a shell of charged matter, and thus a Reissner-Nordstroem-type space-time in t…
We prove a perturbative result concerning the uniqueness of Kerr-Newman family of black holes: given an asymptotically flat space-time with bifurcate horizons, if it agrees with a non-extremal Kerr-Newman space-time asymptotically flat at infinity and it is sufficiently close to the Kerr-Newman family, then the space-time must be one of the Kerr-Newman solutions. The closeness to the Kerr-Newman family is measured by the smallness of a pair of Mars-Simon type tensors, which were introduced by Wong in \cite{Wong_09} to detect the Kerr-Newmann family.
We systematically investigate axisymmetric extremal isolated horizons (EIHs) defined by vanishing surface gravity, corresponding to zero temperature. In the first part, using the Newman-Penrose and GHP formalism we derive the most general metric function for such EIHs in the Einstein-Maxwell theory, which complements the previous result of Lewandowski and Pawlowski. We prove that it depends on 5 independent parameters, namely deficit angles on the north and south poles of a spherical-like section of the horizon, its radius (area), and total electric and magnetic charges of the black hole. The …
Recently new scalarized black hole solutions were constructed in the extended scalar-tensor-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, where the scalar field is sourced by the curvature of the spacetime via the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. A natural extension of these results is to consider the case of nonzero black hole charge. In addition we have explored a large set of coupling functions between the Gauss-Bonnet invariant and the scalar field, that was not done until now even in the uncharged case, in order to understand better the behavior of the solutions and the deviations from pure general relativity. The result…
The action for a class of three-dimensional dilaton-gravity theories, with an electromagnetic Maxwell field and a cosmological constant, can be recast in a Brans-Dicke-Maxwell type action, with its free $ω$ parameter. For a negative cosmological constant, these theories have static, electrically charged, and spherically symmetric black hole solutions. Those theories with well formulated asymptotics are studied through a Hamiltonian formalism, and their thermodynamical properties are found. The theories studied are general relativity, a dimensionally reduced cylindrical four-dimensional general…
This work is devoted to the mathematical study of the Hawking effect for fermions in the setting of the collapse of a rotating charged star. We show that an observer who is located far away from the star and at rest with respect to the Boyer Lindquist coordinates observes the emergence of a thermal state when his proper time goes to infinity. We first introduce a model of the collapse of the star. We suppose that the space-time outside the star is given by the Kerr-Newman metric. The assumptions on the asymptotic behavior of the surface of the star are inspired by the asymptotic behavior of ce…
