We consider boson shells in scalar electrodynamics coupled to Einstein gravity. The interior of the shells can be empty space, or harbour a black hole or a naked singularity. We analyze the properties of these types of solutions and determine their domains of existence. We investigate the energy conditions and present mass formulae for the composite black hole--boson shell systems. We demonstrate that these types of solutions violate black hole uniqueness.
In this article we study the mechanical stability of spherically symmetric thin shells with charge, in Einstein-Maxwell and Einstein-Born-Infeld theories. We analyze linearized perturbations preserving the symmetry, for shells around vacuum and shells surrounding non charged black holes.
We study the dynamics of charged, spherically symmetric dust shells in the presence of a positive cosmological constant. We find generalizations of the well-known solutions in asymptotically flat spacetime, in particular orbits into "parallel universes", but also new solutions corresponding to a "bounce" of the shell before an event horizon has formed. We also discuss "bubble" solutions, in which a charged shell and an oppositely charged singularity are spontaneously created and annihilated.
It is elaborated the complete classification of the possible types of the spherically symmetric global geometries for two types of electrically charged shells: (1) The charged shell as a single source of the gravitational field, when internal space-time is flat, and external space-time is the Reissner--Nordström metric; (2) The neutralizing shell with an electric charge opposite to the charge of the internal source with the Reissner--Nordström metric and with the Schwarzschild metric outside the shell.
A simple and direct, based on the equations of motion, derivation of the variational principle and effective actions for a spherical charged dust shell in general relativity is offered. This principle is based on the relativistic version of the DÆAlembert principle of virtual displacements and leads to the effective actions for the shell, which describe the shell from the point of view of the exterior or interior stationary observers. Herewith, sides of the shell are considered independently, in the coordinates of the interior or exterior region of the shell. Canonical variables for a charged …
In this paper, we construct thin-shell wormholes from charged black string through cut and paste procedure and investigate its stability. We assume modified generalized Chaplygin gas as a dark energy fluid (exotic matter) present in the thin layer of matter-shell. The stability of these constructed thin-shell wormholes is investigated in the scenario of linear perturbations. We conclude that static stable as well as unstable configurations are possible for cylindrical thin-shell wormholes.
By using the gedanken experiments suggested by Bekenstein and Rosenzweig, we have shown that nonextremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole cannot turn into extremal one by assimilating infalling charged particle and charged spherical shell.
In this paper we construct a charged thin-shell gravastar model within the context of noncommutative geometry. To do so, we choose the interior of the nonsingular de Sitter spacetime with an exterior charged noncommutative solution by cut-and-paste technique and apply the generalized junction conditions. We then investigate the stability of a charged thin-shell gravastar under linear perturbations around the static equilibrium solutions as well as the thermodynamical stability of the charged gravastar. We find the stability regions by choosing appropriate parameter values which is located suff…
The linearized stability of charged thin shell wormholes under spherically symmetric perturbations is analized. It is shown that the presence of a large value of charge provides stabilization to the system, in the sense that the constrains onto the equation of state are less severe than for non-charged wormholes.
In this paper we construct charged thin-shell wormholes in (2+1)-dimensions applying the cut-and -paste technique implemented by Visser, from a BTZ black hole which was discovered by Banados, Teitelboim and Zanelli, and the surface stress are determined using the Darmois-Israel formalism at the wormhole throat. We analyzed the stability of the shell considering phantom-energy or generalised Chaplygin gas equation of state for the exotic matter at the throat. We also discussed the linearized stability of charged thin-shell wormholes around the static solution.
We study circular shells in a (2+1)-dimensional background within the framework of Einstein-Born-Infeld theory. For shells around black holes we analyze the mechanical stability under perturbations preserving the symmetry. Shells around vacuum are also discussed. We find a large range in the values of the parameters compatible with stable configurations.
We describe the equation of motion of two charged spherical shells with tangential pressure in the field of a central Reissner-Nordstrom (RN) source. We solve the problem of determining the motion of the two shells \textsl{after} the intersection by solving the related Einstein-Maxwell equations and by requiring a physical continuity condition on the shells velocities. We consider also four applications: post-Newtonian and ultra-relativistic approximations, a test-shell case, and the ejection mechanism of one shell. This work is a direct generalization of Barkov-Belinski-Bisnovati-Kogan paper.
We construct a static axisymmetric wormhole from the gravitational field of two charged shells which are kept in equilibrium by their electromagnetic repulsion. For large separations the exterior tends to the Majumdar-Papapetrou spacetime of two charged particles. The interior of the wormhole is a Reissner-Nordström black hole matching to the two shells. The wormhole is traversable and connects to the same asymptotics without violation of energy conditions. However, every point in the Majumdar-Papapetrou region lies on a closed timelike curve.
A simple self gravitating system --- a thin spherical shell of charged pressureless matter --- is naively quantized as a test case of quantum gravitational collapse. The model is interpreted in terms of an inner product on the positive energy states. An S-matrix is constructed describing scattering between negatively and positively infinite radius.
We give an example of a spacetime having an infinite thin rotating cylindrical shell constituted by a charged perfect fluid as a source. As the interior of the shell the Bonnor--Melvin universe is considered, while its exterior is represented by Datta--Raychaudhuri spacetime. We discuss the energy conditions and we show that our spacetime contains closed timelike curves. Trajectories of charged test particles both inside and outside the cylinder are also examined. Expression for the angular velocity of a circular motion inside the cylinder is given.
To explain Gamma Ray Bursts, Ruffini argued that the event horizon of a charged black hole is surrounded by a special region called, the Dyadosphere where electric field exceeds the critical value for $e^+$ $e^-$ pair production. In the present work, we construct a thin shell wormhole by performing a thought surgery between two dadospheres. Several physical properties of this thin shell wormhole have been analyzed.
This paper discusses a new type of thin-shell wormhole constructed by applying the cut-and-paste technique to two copies of a charged black hole in generalized dilaton-axion gravity, which was inspired by low-energy string theory. After analyzing various aspects of this thin-shell wormhole, we discuss its stability to linearized spherically symmetric perturbations.
We investigate a new thin-shell wormhole constructed by surgically grafting two regular charged black holes arising from the action using nonlinear electrodynamics coupled to general relativity. The stress-energy components within the shell violate the null and weak energy conditions but obey the strong energy condition. We study the stability in two ways: (i) taking a specific equation of state at the throat and (ii) analyzing the stability to linearized spherically symmetric perturbations about a static equilibrium solution. Various other aspects of this thin-shell wormhole are also analyzed…
We build extended sources for the Reissner-Nordström metric. Our models describe a neutral perfect fluid core bounded by a charged thin shell, and feature everywhere positive rest mass density and everywhere non-negative active gravitational mass, as well as classical electron radius and electromagnetic total mass. We contrast our results with previously discussed models featuring similar properties at the expense of including anisotropic pressures within the fluid. Our charged thin shells are restricted by the 2D texture equation of state which causes the continuity of the active gravitationa…
This paper develops a new solution of gravitational vacuum star in the background of charged Kiselev black holes as an exterior manifold. We explore physical features and stability of thin-shell gravastars with radial perturbation. The matter thin layer located at thin-shell greatly affects stable configuration of the developed structure. We assume three different choices of matter distribution such as barotropic, generalized Chaplygin gas and generalized phantomlike equation of state. The last two models depend on the shell radius, also known as variable equation of state. For barotropic mode…
We obtain rotating solutions of regular black holes which are constructed of de Sitter spacetime with the axisymmetric stationary perturbation within the timelike charged thin shell and the Kerr-Newman geometry with sufficiently small rotation outside the shell. To treat the slowly rotating thin shell, we employ the method developed by de la Cruz and Israel. The thin shell is assumed to be composed of a dust in the zero-rotation limit and located inside the inner horizon of the black hole solution. We expand the perturbation in powers of the rotation parameter of the Kerr-Newman metric up to t…
We present a systematical study of static D >= 4 space-times of high symmetry with the matter source being a thin charged dust hypersurface shell. The shell manifold is assumed to have the following structure S_(beta) X R^(D-2-beta), beta (in the interval <0,...,D-2>) is dimension of a sphere S_(beta). In case of (beta) = 0, we assume that there are two parallel hyper-plane shells instead of only one. The space-time has Majumdar-Papapetrou form and it inherits the symmetries of the shell manifold - it is invariant under both rotations of the S_(beta) and translations along R^(D-2-beta). We fin…
Recently, Dadhich et al [ Phys.Lett.B 487, 1 (2000)] have discovered a black hole solution localized on a three brane in five dimensional gravity in the Randall-Sundrum scenario. In this article, we develop a new class of thin shell wormhole by surgically grafting above two black hole spacetimes. Various aspects of this thin wormhole are also analyzed.
We study thin shells of matter in (2+1)-dimensional F(R) theories of gravity with constant scalar curvature R. We consider a wide class of spacetimes with circular symmetry, in which a thin shell joins an inner region with an outer one. We analyze the stability of the static configurations under radial perturbations. As examples of spacetimes asymptotically anti-de Sitter, we present a charged bubble and a charged thin shell surrounding a non-charged black hole. In both cases, we show that stable solutions can be found for suitable values of the parameters.

We introduce two classes of spherically symmetric spacetimes having a thin shell of matter, in non-quadratic F(R) theories of gravity with non-constant scalar curvature R. In the first, the thin shell joins an inner region with an outer one, while in the second it corresponds to the throat of a wormhole. In both scenarios, we analyze the stability of the static configurations under radial perturbations. As particular examples in spacetimes with a cosmological constant, we present charged thin shells surrounding a non-charged black hole and charged thin-shell wormholes. We show that in both cas…
The problem of a spherically symmetric charged thin shell of dust collapsing gravitationally into a charged Reissner-Nordström black hole in $d$ spacetime dimensions is studied within the theory of general relativity. Static charged shells in such a background are also analyzed. First a derivation of the equation of motion of such a shell in a $d$-dimensional spacetime is given. Then a proof of the cosmic censorship conjecture in a charged collapsing framework is presented, and a useful constraint which leads to an upper bound for the rest mass of a charged shell with an empty interior is deri…
The physical properties of bound-state charged massive scalar field configurations linearly coupled to a spherically symmetric charged reflecting shell are studied {\it analytically}. To that end, we solve the Klein-Gordon wave equation for a static scalar field of proper mass $μ$, charge coupling constant $q$, and spherical harmonic index $l$ in the background of a charged shell of radius $R$ and electric charge $Q$. It is proved that the dimensionless inequality $μR<\sqrt{(qQ)^2-(l+1/2)^2}$ provides an upper bound on the regime of existence of the composed charged-spherical-shell-charged-mas…
In this paper, we apply the cut and paste procedure to charged black string for the construction of thin-shell wormhole. We consider the Darmois-Israel formalism to determine the surface stresses of the shell. We take Chaplygin gas to deal with the matter distribution on shell. The radial perturbation approach (preserving the symmetry) is used to investigate the stability of static solutions. We conclude that stable static solutions exist both for uncharged and charged black string thin-shell wormholes for particular values of the parameters.
In this article, we consider spherical thin shells of matter surrounding black holes in F(R) theories of gravity. We study the stability of the static configurations under perturbations that conserve the symmetry. In particular, we analyze the case of charged shells outside the horizon of non--charged black holes. We obtain that stable static thin shells are possible if the values of the parameters of the model are properly selected.
We study {\it analytically} the characteristic resonance spectrum of charged massive scalar fields linearly coupled to a spherically symmetric charged reflecting shell. In particular, we use analytical techniques in order to solve the Klein-Gordon wave equation for the composed charged-shell-charged-massive-scalar-field system. Interestingly, it is proved that the resonant oscillation frequencies of this composed physical system are determined by the characteristic zeroes of the confluent hypergeometric function. Following this observation, we derive a remarkably compact analytical formula for…
We give a comparative description of monopole and electrically charged spherically symmetric dust thin shells. Herewith we consider two of the most interesting configurations: the hollow shell and shell, surrounding a body with opposite charge. The classification of shells in accordance with the types of black holes and traversable wormholes is constructed. The theorems for the parameters of turning points are proved. Also for atomlike configurations the effects of screening (electrical case) and amplification (monopole case) of the internal mass by shell charge are studied. Finally, one consi…
A new exact solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations for the gravitational collapse of a shell of matter in an already formed black hole is given. Both the shell and the black hole are endowed with electromagnetic structure and are assumed spherically symmetric. Implications for current research are outlined.
We consider boson stars and black holes in scalar electrodynamics with a V-shaped scalar potential. The boson stars come in two types, having either ball-like or shell-like charge density. We analyze the properties of these solutions and determine their domains of existence. When mass and charge become equal, the space-times develop a throat. The shell-like solutions need not be globally regular, but may possess a horizon. The space-times then consist of a Schwarzschild-type black hole in the interior, surrounded by a shell of charged matter, and thus a Reissner-Nordstroem-type space-time in t…
We investigate the stability of a free scalar field nonminimally coupled to gravity under linear perturbations in the spacetime of a charged spherical shell. Our analysis is performed in the context of quantum field theory in curved spacetimes. This paper completes previous analyses which considered the exponential enhancement of vacuum fluctuations in the spacetime of massive shells.
We review the General Relativistic model of a (quasi) point-like particle represented by a massive shell of electrically charged matter, which displays an ADM mass M equal to the electric charge |Q| in the small-volume limit. We employ the Israel-Darboux's junction equations to explicitly derive this result, and then study the modifications introduced by the existence of a minimum length scale lambda. For lambda of the order of the Planck length (or larger), we find that the ADM mass becomes equal to the bare mass m_0 of the shell, like it occurs for the neutral case.
A class of spherical collapsing exact solutions with electromagnetic charge is derived. This class of solutions -- in general anisotropic -- contains however as a particular case the charged dust model already known in literature. Under some regularity assumptions that in the uncharged case give rise to naked singularities, it is shown that the process of shell focusing singularities avoidance -- already known for the dust collapse -- also takes place here, determing shell crossing effects or a completely regular solution.
We study {\it analytically} the physical and mathematical properties of spatially regular massless scalar field configurations which are non-minimally coupled to the electromagnetic field of a spherically symmetric charged reflecting shell. In particular, the Klein-Gordon wave equation for the composed charged-reflecting-shell-nonminimally-coupled-linearized-massless-scalar-field system is solved analytically. Interestingly, we explicitly prove that the discrete resonance spectrum $\{R_{\text{s}}(Q,α,l;n)\}^{n=\infty}_{n=1}$ of charged shell radii that can support the non-minimally coupled mas…
We consider a particular Bardeen black hole in 2+1-dimensions. The black hole is sourced by a radial electric field in non-linear electrodynamics (NED). The solution is obtained anew by the alternative Hamiltonian formalism. For $r\rightarrow \infty $ it asymptotes to the charged BTZ black hole. It is shown that by inserting a charged, thin-shell (or ring) the charge of the regular black hole can be screened from the external world.
The thin shell collapse leading to the formation of charged rotating black holes in three dimensions is analyzed in the light of a recently developed Hamiltonian formalism for these systems. It is proposed to demand, as a way to reconcile the properties of an infinitely extended solenoid in flat space with a magnetic black hole in three dimensions, that the magnetic field should vanish just outside the shell. The adoption of this boundary condition results in an exterior solution with a magnetic field different from zero at a finite distance from the shell. The interior solution is also found …
Phase diagrams of the boson stars and shells of the $U(1)$ gauged $\mathbb{C}P^N$ nonlinear sigma model are studied. The solutions of the model exhibit both the ball- and the shell-shaped charge density depending on $N$. There appear four independent regions of the solutions which are essentially caused from the coexistence of electromagnetism and gravity. We examine several phase diagrams of the boson stars and the shells and discuss what and how the regions are emerged. A coupling with gravity allows for harboring of the charged black holes for the $Q$-shell solutions. Some solutions are str…
We study the effect of charge on gravitational collapse of inhomogeneous dust cloud in the Einstein, Gauss-Bonnet and Lovelock gravity. Dynamics of the collapsing shell is analyzed. The conditions for the occurrence of bounce during collapse are given. We also show that shell crossing occurs inevitably if the shell near the center is weakly charged.
The maximally extended Reissner--Nordström (RN) manifold with $e^2 < m^2$ begs for attaching a material source to it that would preserve the infinite chain of asymptotically flat regions and evolve through the wormhole between the RN singularities. So far, the attempts were discouraging. Here we try one more possible source -- a solution found by Ruban in 1972 that is a charged generalisation of an inhomogeneous Kantowski--Sachs-type dust solution. It can be matched to the RN solution, and the matching surface must stay all the time between the two RN event horizons. However, shell crossings d…
We study the variation of the massive black hole in both normal and extended thermodynamic phase spaces via two methods. The first method includes a charged particle absorbed by the black hole, while the second method includes a shell of dust falling into the black hole. Using the former method, the first and second laws of thermodynamics are always satisfied in the normal phase space, while in the extended phase space, the first law of thermodynamics is also satisfied, but the validity of the second law of thermodynamics depends on the model parameters. Applying the latter method, the first a…
We construct new regular black hole solutions by matching the de Sitter solution and the Reissner-Nordstrom solution with a timelike thin shell. The thin shell is assumed to have mass but no pressure and obeys an equation of motion derived from Israel's junction conditions. By investigating the equation of motion for the shell, we obtain stationary solutions of charged regular black holes and examine stability of the solutions. Stationary solutions are found in limited ranges of 0.87L < m < 1.99L, and they are stable against small radial displacement of the shell with fixed values of m, M, and…
We classify all fundamental electrically charged thin shells in general relativity, i.e., static spherically symmetric perfect fluid thin shells with a Minkowski spacetime interior and a Reissner-Nordström spacetime exterior, characterized by the spacetime mass and electric charge. The fundamental shell can exist in three states, nonextremal, extremal, and overcharged. The nonextremal state allows the shell to be located such that its radius can be outside its own gravitational radius, or can be inside its own Cauchy radius. The extremal state allows the shell to be located such that its radiu…
We reveal the existence of a new form of spontaneously scalarized black-hole configurations. In particular, it is proved that Reissner-Nordström black holes in the highly charged regime $Q/M>(Q/M)_{\text{crit}}=\sqrt{21}/5$ can support {\it thin} matter shells that are made of massive scalar fields with a non-minimal coupling to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant of the curved spacetime. These static scalar shells, which become infinitesimally thin in the dimensionless large-mass $Mμ\gg1$ regime, hover a finite proper distance above the black-hole horizon [here $\{M,Q\}$ are respectively the mass and …
In this article the static Einstein-Vlasov-Maxwell system is considered in spherical symmetry. This system describes an ensemble of charged particles interacting by general relativistic gravity and Coulomb forces. First, a proof for local existence of solutions around the center of symmetry is given. Then, by virtue of a perturbation argument, global existence is established for small particle charges. The method of proof yields solutions with matter quantities of bounded support - among other classes, shells of charged Vlasov matter. As a further result, the limit of infinitesimal thin shells…
A static self-gravitating electrically charged spherical thin shell embedded in a (3+1)-dimensional spacetime is used to study the thermodynamic and entropic properties of the corresponding spacetime. Inside the shell, the spacetime is flat, outside it is Reissner-Nordström, and this establishes the energy density, the pressure, and the electric charge in the shell. Imposing that the shell is at a given local temperature and that the first law of thermodynamics holds on the shell one can find the integrability conditions for the temperature and for the thermodynamic electric potential, the the…
This paper studies the effects of charge on a peculiar stellar object, recognized as gravastar, under the influence of $f(R,T)$ gravity by considering the conjecture of Mazur and Mottola in general relativity. The gravastar is also known as an alternative to a black hole and is expressed by three distinct domains named as (i) the interior domain, (ii) the intermediate shell and (iii) the exterior domain. We analyze these domains for a specific $f(R,T)$ gravity model conceding the conformal Killing vectors. In the interior domain, we assume that pressure is equal to negative energy density whic…
Using a Hamiltonian treatment, charged thin shells in spherically symmetric spacetimes in d dimensional Lovelock-Maxwell theory are studied. The coefficients of the theory are chosen to obtain a sensible theory, with a negative cosmological constant appearing naturally. After writing the action and the Lagrangian for a spacetime comprised of an interior and an exterior regions, with a thin shell as a boundary in between, one finds the Hamiltonian using an ADM description. For spherically symmetric spacetimes, one reduces the relevant constraints. The dynamic and constraint equations are obtain…
The characterization and mechanical stability of charged thin shells with spherical symmetry are analyzed in the context of Einstein-Born-Infeld theory. The study of stability is performed by considering linearized perturbations preserving the symmetry of the static configurations. It is found that as the charge increases, the shells can be stable for a wider range of the parameters.
A concentric charged thin-shell encircling a Reissner-Nordström black hole screens the clectric / magnetic charge completely to match with an external Schwarzschild black hole. The negative mass thin-shell is shown to be stable against radial perturbations. It is shown further that by reversing the roles of inside Reissner-Nordström and outside Schwarzschild geometries the mass of the appropriate shell becomes positive.
