Gravitational wave observations can test the validity of General Relativity (GR) in the strong field regime. Certain classes of scalar-tensor theories indeed predict that compact objects can exhibit significant deviations from their GR counterparts. Here we explore the quasinormal modes of axial perturbations in spherically symmetric black holes in three such classes: (i) dilatonic black holes with an additional scalar-Ricci coupling (EdRGB), (ii) spontaneously scalarized black holes (EsRGB) with a quadratic coupling to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant and the Ricci scalar, (iii) spontaneously scalarized black holes with a quadratic and a quartic coupling to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant.
We study the axial quasinormal modes of hairy black holes in Gauss-Bonnet gravity with massive self-interacting scalar field. Two coupling functions of the scalar field to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant are adopted with one of them leading to black hole scalarization. The axial perturbations are studied via time evolution of the perturbation equation, and the effect of the scalar field mass and the self-interaction constant on the oscillation frequency and damping time is examined. We study as well the effect of nonzero scalar field potential on the critical point at which the perturbation equatio…

In this work, we consider a very simple gravitational theory that contains a scalar field with its kinetic and potential terms minimally coupled to gravity, while the scalar field is assumed to have a coulombic form. In the context of this theory, we study an analytic, asymptotically flat, and regular (ultra-compact) black-hole solutions with non-trivial scalar hair of secondary type. At first, we examine the properties of the static and spherically symmetric black-hole solution -- firstly appeared in 1504.08209 [gr-qc] -- and we find that in the causal region of the spacetime the stress-energ…
In a very interesting paper, Hod has proven that the equatorial null circular geodesic provides the extreme orbital period to circle a kerr black hole, which is closely related to the Fermat's principle. In the present paper, we extend the discussion to kerr black holes with scalar field hair. We show that the circle with the extreme orbital period is still identical to the null circular geodesic. Our analysis also implies that the Hod's theorem may be a general property in any axially symmetric spacetime with reflection symmetry on the equatorial plane.

We construct static, asymptotically flat black hole solutions with scalar hair. They evade the no-hair theorems by having a scalar potential which is not strictly positive. By including an azimuthal winding number in the scalar field ansatz, we find hairy black hole solutions which are static but axially symmetric only. These solutions possess a globally regular limit, describing scalar solitons. A branch of axially symmetric black holes is found to possess a positive specific heat.
We consider static axially symmetric Einstein-Yang-Mills black holes in the isolated horizon formalism. The mass of these hairy black holes is related to the mass of the corresponding particle-like solutions by the horizon mass. The hairy black holes violate the ``quasi-local uniqueness conjecture'', based on the horizon charges.
We study axial (or odd-parity) perturbations about static and spherically symmetric hairy black hole (BH) solutions in shift-symmetric DHOST (Degenerate Higher-Order Scalar-Tensor) theories. We first extend to the family of DHOST theories the first-order formulation that we recently developed for Horndeski theories. Remarkably, we find that the dynamics of DHOST axial perturbations is equivalent to that of axial perturbations in general relativity (GR) evolving in a, distinct, effective metric. In the particular case of quadratic DHOST theories, this effective metric is derived from the backgr…
The recently obtained hairy Kerr black holes, due to additional sources or surrounding fluid, like dark matter, with conserved energy-momentum tensor, have a deviation $α$ and primary hair $l_0$, apart from rotation parameter $a$ and mass $M$. In the wake of the \textit{Event Horizon Telescope} (\textit{EHT}) observations of the supermassive black hole M87*, a recent surge in interest in black hole shadows suggests comparing the black holes in general relativity (GR) and modified theories of gravity (MoG) to assess these models' differences. Motivated by this, we take on an extensive study of …
We construct static axially symmetric black holes in multi-Skyrmion configurations coupled to Einstein gravity in four dimensional asymptotically flat space-time. In a simplest case the event horizon is located in-between a Skyrmion-anti-Skyrmion pair, other solutions represent black holes with gravitationally bounded chains of Skyrmions and anti-Skyrmions placed along the axis of symmetry in alternating order. We discuss the properties of these hairy black holes and exhibit their domain of existence.
We introduce a systematic and direct procedure to generate hairy rotating black holes by deforming a spherically symmetric seed solution. We develop our analysis in the context of the gravitational decoupling approach, without resorting to the Newman-Janis algorithm. As examples of possible applications, we investigate how the Kerr black hole solution is modified by a surrounding fluid with conserved energy-momentum tensor. We find non-trivial extensions of the Kerr and Kerr-Newman black holes with primary hair. We prove that a rotating and charged black hole can have the same horizon as Kerr'…
We study a new family of self-gravitating axially-symmetric, rotating boson stars in the two-component Friedberg-Lee-Sirlin model minimally coupled to Einstein gravity in four spacetime dimensions. In the flat space limit the boson stars tend to the corresponding Q-balls. Subject to the usual synchronization condition, the model admits spinning hairy black hole solutions with two different types of scalar hair. We here investigate parity-even and parity-odd boson stars and their associated hairy black holes. We explore the domain of existence of the solutions and address some of their physical…
A linear coupling between a scalar field and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant is the only known interaction term between a scalar and the metric that: respects shift symmetry; does not lead to higher order equations; inevitably introduces black hole hair in asymptotically flat, 4-dimensional spacetimes. Here we focus on the simplest theory that includes such a term and we explore the dynamical formation of scalar hair. In particular, we work in the decoupling limit that neglects the backreaction of the scalar onto the metric and evolve the scalar configuration numerically in the background of a Schw…
We consider generalised pp-waves with purely axial torsion, which we previously showed to be new vacuum solutions of quadratic metric-affine gravity. Our analysis shows that classical pp-waves of parallel Ricci curvature should not be viewed on their own. They are a particular representation of a wider class of solutions, namely generalised pp-waves of parallel Ricci curvature. We compare our pp-waves with purely axial torsion to solutions of Einstein-Weyl theory, the classical model describing the interaction of gravitational and massless neutrino fields.
We study Kerr black holes with synchronised non-trivial parity-odd massive scalar hair in four dimensional asymptotically flat space-time. These axially symmetric stationary spinning solutions of the minimally coupled Einstein-Klein-Gordon theory provide yet another example of bound states in synchronous rotation with the event horizon. We discuss the properties of these parity-odd hairy black holes and boson stars and exhibit their domain of existence. Considering the ergo-regions of these hairy black holes, we show that apart from the previously discussed ergo-sphere and ergo-Saturn, they su…
We consider the $\mathrm{O}(3)$ non-linear sigma-model, composed of three real scalar fields with a standard kinetic term and with a symmetry breaking potential in four spacetime dimensions. We show that this simple, geometrically motivated model, admits both self-gravitating, asymptotically flat, non-topological solitons and hairy black holes, when minimally coupled to Einstein's gravity, $without$ the need to introduce higher order kinetic terms in the scalar fields action. Both spherically symmetric and spinning, axially symmetric solutions are studied. The solutions are obtained under a an…
We construct rotating hairy black holes in SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills theory. These stationary axially symmetric black holes are asymptotically flat. They possess non-trivial non-Abelian gauge fields outside their regular event horizon, and they carry non-Abelian electric charge. In the limit of vanishing angular momentum, they emerge from the neutral static spherically symmetric Einstein-Yang-Mills black holes, labelled by the node number of the gauge field function. With increasing angular momentum and mass, the non-Abelian electric charge of the solutions increases, but remains finite. The a…
We study linear perturbations about non rotating black hole solutions in scalar-tensor theories, more specifically Horndeski theories. We consider two particular theories that admit known hairy black hole solutions. The first one, Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory, contains a Gauss-Bonnet term coupled to a scalar field, and its black hole solution is given as a perturbative expansion in a small parameter that measures the deviation from general relativity. The second one, known as 4-dimensional-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory, can be seen as a compactification of higher-dimensional Lovelock the…
The nonminimal coupling of the nonzero vacuum expectation value of the self-interacting antisymmetric Kalb-Ramond field with gravity leads to a power-law hairy black hole having a parameter $s$, which encompasses the Reissner$-$Nordstrom black hole ($s=1$). We obtain the axially symmetric counterpart of this hairy solution, namely, the rotating Kalb-Ramond black hole, which encompasses, as special cases, Kerr ($s=0$) and Kerr-Newman ($s=1$) black holes. Interestingly, for a set of parameters ($M, a$, and $Γ$), there exists an extremal value of the Kalb-Ramond parameter ($s=s_{e}$), which corre…
The lack of rotating black holes, typically found in nature, hinders testing modified gravity from astrophysical observations. We present the axially symmetric counterpart of an existing spherical hairy black hole in Horndeski gravity having an additional deviation parameter $Q$, which encompasses the Kerr black hole as a particular case ($Q=0$). We investigate the effect of Horndeski parameter $Q$ on the rotating black holes' geometry and analytically deduce the gravitational deflection angle of light in the weak-field limit. For the S2 source star, the deflection angle for the Sgr A* model o…
We consider four dimensional stationary and axially symmetric spacetimes for conformally coupled scalar-tensor theories. We show that, in analogy to the Lewis-Papapetrou problem in General Relativity (GR), the theory at hand can be recast in an analogous integrable form. We give the relevant rod formalism, introduced by Weyl for vacuum GR, explicitly giving the rod structure of the black hole of Bocharova et al. and Bekenstein (BBMB), in complete analogy to the Schwarzschild solution. The additional scalar field is shown to play the role of an extra Weyl potential. We then employ the Ernst met…
Poincaré gauge theories provide an approach to gravity based on the gauging of the Poincaré group, whose homogeneous part generates curvature while the translational sector gives rise to torsion. In this note we revisit the stability of the widely studied quadratic theories within this framework. We analyse the presence of ghosts without fixing any background by obtaining the relevant interactions in an exact post-Riemannian expansion. We find that the axial sector of the theory exhibits ghostly couplings to the graviton sector that render the theory unstable. Remarkably, imposing the absence …
Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory is an interesting and well-motivated theoretical laboratory to explore the impact of new fundamental degrees of freedom in the context of testing the no-hair conjecture, due to the existence of hairy black hole solutions together with the propagation of scalar, vector and tensor modes. In this paper we compute the quasinormal mode spectrum of static and slowly rotating black holes for generic values of the dilaton coupling, within a weak electric charge approximation. Our results suggest that these spacetimes are stable for generic values of the dilaton coupling…
The Darboux transformation between ordinary differential equations is a 19th century technique that has seen wide use in quantum theory for producing exactly solvable potentials for the Schrödinger equation with specific spectral properties. In this paper we show that the same transformation appears in black hole theory, relating, for instance, the Zerilli and Regge-Wheeler equations for axial and polar Schwarzschild perturbations. The transformation reveals these two equations to be isospectral, a well known result whose method has been repeatedly reintroduced under different names. We highli…
For a stable marginally outer trapped surface (MOTS) in an axially symmetric spacetime with cosmological constant $Λ> 0$ and with matter satisfying the dominant energy condition, we prove that the area $A$ and the angular momentum $J$ satisfy the inequality $8π|J| \le A\sqrt{(1-ΛA/4π)(1-ΛA/12π)}$ which is saturated precisely for the extreme Kerr-deSitter family of metrics. This result entails a universal upper bound $|J| \le J_{\max} \approx 0.17/Λ$ for such MOTS, which is saturated for one particular extreme configuration. Our result sharpens the inequality $8π|J| \le A$, [7,14] and we follow…
