The lack of rotating black holes, typically found in nature, hinders testing modified gravity from astrophysical observations. We present the axially symmetric counterpart of an existing spherical hairy black hole in Horndeski gravity having an additional deviation parameter $Q$, which encompasses the Kerr black hole as a particular case ($Q=0$). We investigate the effect of Horndeski parameter $Q$ on the rotating black holes' geometry and analytically deduce the gravitational deflection angle of light in the weak-field limit. For the S2 source star, the deflection angle for the Sgr A* model of the rotating Horndeski gravity black hole for both prograde and retrograde photons is larger than the Kerr black hole values. We show how parameter $Q$ could be constrained by astrophysical implications of the lensing of this object. The thermodynamic quantities, Komar mass, and Komar angular momentum gets corrected by the parameter $Q$, but the Smarr relation $M_{\text{eff}}=2ST+2ΩJ_{\text{eff}}$ still holds at the event horizon.
In this article we study gravitational lensing by non-rotating and asymptotically flat black holes in Horndeski theory. By adopting the strong deflection limit, we calculate the deflection angle, from which we obtain the positions and the magnifications of the relativistic images. We compare our results with those corresponding to black holes in General Relativity. We analyze the astrophysical consequences in the case of the nearest supermassive black holes.
A charged black hole was predicted by the Einstein--Horndeski--Maxwell theory. In order to provide its observational signatures, we investigate its weak and strong deflection gravitational lensings. We find its weak deflection lensing observables, including the positions, magnifications and differential time delay of the lensed images. We also obtain its strong deflection lensing observables, including the apparent radius of the photon sphere as well as the angular separation, brightness difference and differential time delay between the relativistic images. Taking the supermassive black hole …
We study gravitational lensing in strong-field limit by a static spherically symmetric black hole in quartic scalar field Horndeski gravity having additional hair parameter $q$, evading the no-hair theorem. We find an increase in the deflection angle $α_D$, photon sphere radius $x_{ps}$, and angular position $θ_{\infty}$ that increases more quickly while angular separation $s$ more slowly, but the ratio of the flux of the first image to all other images $r_{mag}$ decreases rapidly with increasing magnitude of the hair $q$. We also discuss the astrophysical consequences in the supermassive blac…
The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration recently unveiled the first image of the supermassive black hole M87*, which exhibited a ring of angular diameter $θ_{d}=42 \pm 3 μas$, a circularity deviation $ΔC \leq 0.1$, and also inferred a black hole mass of $M=(6.5 \pm 0.7) \times 10^9 M_\odot $. This provides a new window onto tests of theories of gravity in the strong-field regime, including probes of violations of the no-hair theorem. It is widely believed that the Kerr metric describes the astrophysical black holes, as encapsulated in the critical but untested no-hair theorem. Modeling…
In this work, we present the effect of a probe string on the complexity of a black hole according to the CA (Complexity equals action) conjecture on Horndeski's gravity. In our system, we consider a particle moving on the boundary of black hole spacetime in ($2+1$)-dimensions. To obtain a dual description, we need to insertion a fundamental string on the bulk spacetime. The effect of this string is given by the Nambu-Goto term. For the Nambu-Goto term, we can analyze the time development of this system, which is affected by the parameters of Horndeski's gravity. In our case, we show some inter…
The principal objective of this project is to investigate the gravitational lensing by asymptotically flat black holes in the framework of Horndeski theory in weak field limits. To achieve this objective, we utilize the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to the optical geometry of asymptotically flat black holes and apply the Gibbons-Werner technique to achieve the deflection angle of photons in weak field limits. Subsequently, we manifest the influence of plasma medium on deflection of photons by asymptotically flat black holes in the context of Horndeski theory. We also examine the graphical impact of def…
We study black hole solutions at first order in the Hartle-Thorne slow-rotation approximation in Horndeski gravity theories. We derive the equations of motion including also cases where the scalar depends linearly on time. In the Hartle-Thorne formalism, all first-order rotational corrections are described by a single frame-dragging function. We show that the frame-dragging function is exactly the same as in general relativity for all known black hole solutions in shift symmetric Horndeski theories, with the exception of theories with a linear coupling to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. Our result…

This work is devoted to the construction of slowly rotating neutron stars in the framework of the nonminimal derivative coupling sector of Horndeski theory. We match the large radius expansion of spherically symmetric solutions with cosmological solutions and we find that the most viable model has only one free parameter. Then, by using several tabulated and realistic equations of state, we establish numerically the upper bound for this parameter in order to construct neutron stars in the slow rotation approximation with the maximal mass observed today. We finally study the surface redshift an…

Horndeski gravity holds a special position as the most general extension of Einstein's theory of general relativity with a single scalar degree of freedom and second-order field equations. Because of these features, Horndeski gravity is an attractive phenomenological playground to investigate the consequences of modifications of general relativity in cosmology and astrophysics. We present a review of the progress made so far in the study of compact objects (black holes and neutron stars) within Horndeski gravity. In particular, we review our recent work on slowly rotating black holes and prese…
The Beyond Horndeski class of alternative gravity theories allow for Self-accelerating de-Sitter cosmologies with no need for a cosmological constant. This makes them viable alternatives to $Λ$CDM and so testing their small-scale predictions against General Relativity is of paramount importance. These theories generically predict deviations in both the Newtonian force law and the gravitational lensing of light inside extended objects. Therefore, by simultaneously fitting the X-ray and lensing profiles of galaxy clusters new constraints can be obtained. In this work, we apply this methodology t…
We study the phenomenology of the beyond Horndeski class of scalar-tensor theories of gravity, which on cosmological scales can be characterised in terms of one extra function of time, $α_{\rm H}$, as well as the usual four Horndeski set of free functions. We show that $α_{\rm H}$ can be directly related to the the damping of the matter power spectrum on both large and small scales. We also find that the temperature power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is enhanced at low multipoles and the lensing potential is decreased, as a function of $α_{\rm H}$. We find constraints on $…
Gravitational lensing caused by the gravitational field of massive objects has been studied and acknowledged for a long period of time. In this paper, however, we propose a different mechanism where the bending of light stems from the non-linear interaction of gravitational, electromagnetic and axion waves that creates the high curvature zone in the space-time fabric. The striking distinction in the present study is that in contrast to the convex lensing in the gravitational field of a massive object, hyperbolic nature of the high curvature zone of the background space-time may give rise to co…
In this paper the deflection angle of light by a rotating Teo wormhole spacetime is calculated in the weak limit approximation. We mainly focus on the weak deflection angle by revealing the gravitational lensing as a partially global topological effect. We apply the Gauss-Bonnet theorem (GBT) to the optical geometry osculating the Teo-Randers wormhole optical geometry to calculate the deflection angle. Furthermore we find the same result using the standard geodesic method. We have found that the deflection angle can be written as a sum of two terms, namely the first term is proportional to the…
We review black hole and star solutions for Horndeski theory. For non-shift symmetric theories, black holes involve a Kaluza-Klein reduction of higher dimensional Lovelock solutions. On the other hand, for shift symmetric theories of Horndeski and beyond Horndeski, black holes involve two classes of solutions: those that include, at the level of the action, a linear coupling to the Gauss-Bonnet term and those that involve time dependence in the galileon field. We analyze the latter class in detail for a specific subclass of Horndeski theory, discussing the general solution of a static and sphe…
Konoplya and Zhidenko have proposed recently a rotating non-Kerr black hole metric beyond General Relativity and make an estimate for the possible deviations from the Kerr solution with the data of GW 150914. We here study the strong gravitational lensing in such a rotating non-Kerr spacetime with an extra deformation parameter. We find that the condition of existence of horizons is not inconsistent with that of the marginally circular photon orbit. Moreover, the deflection angle of the light ray near the weakly naked singularity covered by the marginally circular orbit diverges logarithmicall…

We compute the low-$\ell$ limit of the family of higher-order spectra for projected (2D) weak lensing convergence maps. In this limit, these spectra are computed to an arbitrary order using {\em tree-level} perturbative calculations. We use the flat-sky approximation and Eulerian perturbative results based on a generating function approach. We test these results for the lower-order members of this family, i.e. the skew- and kurt-spectra against state-of-the-art simulated all-sky weak lensing convergence maps and find our results to be in very good agreement. We also show how these spectra can …
Motivated by (i) more and more interest in strong gravitational lensing by supermassive black holes due to the achievement of EHT observations, (ii) the ongoing popular topic on the possibility of Lorentz symmetry being broken in gravitation and its consequences, we will apply the Einstein bumblebee gravity with Lorentz violation (LV) to the study of strong gravitational lensing effect and the black hole shadow of slowly rotating Kerr-like black hole. In the strong gravitational lensing sector, we first calculate the deflection angel; then treating the slowly rotating Kerr-like black hole as s…
We study the strong gravitational lensing effect around rotating black holes in different gravity theories. By calculating the deflection angle of strong gravitational lensing, we evaluate the lensing observables including the image position, separation, magnification and the time delays between the relativistic images of different rotating black holes. We argue that the differences in image positions, separations between the rotating black hole in modified gravity (MOG) theory and the Kerr black hole in general relativity (GR) are more significant in SgrA* than those in M87*, however the diff…
We have investigated the strong gravitational lensing in a rotating squashed Kaluza-Klein (KK) black hole spacetime. Our result show that the strong gravitational lensings in the rotating squashed KK black hole spacetime have some distinct behaviors from those in the backgrounds of the four-dimensional Kerr black hole and of the squashed KK Gödel black hole. In the rotating squashed KK black hole spacetime, the marginally circular photon radius $ρ_{ps}$, the coefficient $\bar{a}$, $\bar{b}$, the deflection angle $α(θ)$ in the $ϕ$ direction and the corresponding observational variables are inde…
The null geodesics of the regular and rotating magnetically charged black hole in a non-minimally coupled Einstein-Yang-Mills theory surrounded by a plasma medium is studied. The effect of magnetic charge and Yang-Mills parameter on the effective potential and radius of photon orbits has investigated. We then study the shadow of a regular and rotating magnetically charged black hole along with the observables in presence of the plasma medium. The presence of plasma medium affects the apparent size of the shadow of a regular rotating black hole in comparison to vacuum case. Variation of shadow …
We study strong gravitational lensing in rotating space-times which can be thought of as realistic galactic models in General Relativity. To this end, using the Newman-Janis algorithm, we first obtain a rotating version of a static galactic metric advanced by Bharadwaj and Kar. This is matched with a generic external Kerr solution without a slowly-rotating approximation. Next, we construct a rotating version of Perlick's Bertrand space-times and establish this as a new rotating solution of Einstein's equations where each spatial radius admits a stable circular orbit. A rotating generalization …
Phenomenological functions $Σ$ and $μ$ (also known as $G_{\rm light}/G$ and $G_{\rm matter}/G$) are commonly used to parameterize possible modifications of the Poisson equation relating the matter density contrast to the lensing and the Newtonian potentials, respectively. They will be well constrained by future surveys of large scale structure. But what would the implications of measuring particular values of these functions be for modified gravity theories? We ask this question in the context of general Horndeski class of single field scalar-tensor theories with second order equations of moti…
We consider a time-like geodesics in the background of rotating Einstein-Born-Infeld (EBI) black hole to examine the horizon and ergosphere structure. The effective potential that governs the particle's motion in the spacetime and the innermost stable circular orbits (ISCO) is also studied. A qualitative analysis is conducted to find the redshifted ultrahigh centre-of-mass (CM) energy as a result of a two-particle collision specifically near the horizon. The recent Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) triggered a surge of interest in strong gravitational lensing by black holes, which provide a new to…
Considering the spacetime around a rotating massif body it is seen that the time of flight of a light ray is different whether it travels on one side of the source or on the other. The difference is proportional to the angular momentum of the body. In the case that a compact rapidly rotating object is the source of a gravitational lensing effect, the contribution coming from the above mentioned gravitational Aharonov-Bohm effect should be added to the other causes of phase difference between light rays coming from different images of the same object.
We model massive compact objects in galactic nuclei as stationary, axially-symmetric naked singularities in the Einstein-massless scalar field theory and study the resulting gravitational lensing. In the weak deflection limit we study analytically the position of the two weak field images, the corresponding signed and absolute magnifications as well as the centroid up to post-Newtonian order. We show that there are a static post-Newtonian corrections to the signed magnification and their sum as well as to the critical curves, which are function of the scalar charge. The shift of the critical c…
The tachyonic instability is associated with the unboundedness of the Hamiltonian from below and results in an unstable low-$k$ regime. In the cosmological exploration of modified gravity, it is seldom taken into account, with more focus given to the popular no-ghost and no-gradient conditions. The latter though are intrinsically high-$k$ statements. Here we combine all three conditions into a full set of requirements that we show to guarantee stability on the whole range of cosmological scales. We then explore the impact of the different conditions on the parameter space of scalar-tensor grav…
We study the perturbations to General Relativistic black holes (i.e. those without scalar hair) in Horndeski scalar-tensor gravity. First, we derive the equations of odd and even parity perturbations of both the metric and scalar field in the case of a Schwarzschild black hole, and show that the gravitational waves emitted from such a system contain a mixture of quasi-normal mode frequencies from the usual General Relativistic spectrum and those from the new scalar field spectrum, with the new scalar spectrum characterised by just two free parameters. We then specialise to the sub-family of Ho…
In this paper, using the recent method proposed by Ono, Ishihara and Asada (OIA) who extend the idea of Gibbons and Werner to the stationary and axisymmetric case, we apply the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to the optical metric of the non-rotating and rotating Damour-Solodukhin wormholes spacetimes to study the weak gravitational lensing by these objects. Furthermore, we study the strong gravitational lensing by the non-rotating Damour-Solodukhin wormholes using the Bozza's method to see the differences between the weak lensing and the strong lensing. We demonstrate the relation between the strong def…
We derive the delay in travel time of photons due to the spin of a body both inside a rotating shell and outside a rotating body. We then show that this time delay by the spin of an astrophysical object might be detected in different images of the same source by gravitational lensing; it might be relevant in the determination of the Hubble constant using accurate measurements of the time delay between the images of some gravitational lens systems. The measurement of the spin-time-delay might also provide a further observable to estimate the dark matter content in galaxies, clusters, or super-c…
The gravitational lensing of a finite star moving around a rotating Kerr black hole has been numerically calculated. Calculations for the direct image of the star and for the first and second light echoes have been performed for the star moving with an orbital period of 3.22 h around the supermassive black hole SgrA* at the Galactic Center. Time dependences for the observed star position on the celestial sphere, radiation flux from the star, frequency of detected radiation, major and minor semiaxes of the lensed star image have been calculated and plotted. The detailed observation of such lens…
