We present different Taub-NUT/Bolt-anti de Sitter (AdS) solutions in a shift-symmetric sector of Horndeski theory of gravity possessing nonminimal kinetic coupling of scalar fields to the Einstein tensor. In four dimensions, we find locally and asymptotically locally AdS solutions possessing nontrivial scalar field. In higher dimensions, analytical Taub-NUT/Bolt-AdS p-branes and solitons are obtained, supported by the existence of p Horndeski scalar fields with axionic profile. The thermodynamical properties are studied through Euclidean methods and it is found that the first law of thermodynamics is satisfied. Moreover, constraints on the parameter space of Horndeski gravity and NUT charge are obtained by demanding positivity of the mass, entropy, and specific heat of the p-branes and soliton. We briefly comment on future applications in holography.
We study aspects of the extended gravitational thermodynamics for the Taub-NUT and Taub-Bolt geometries in four dimensional locally anti-de Sitter spacetime, where the cosmological constant is treated as a dynamical pressure. Attention is paid to the phase structure in the (p,T) plane, which has a line of first order phase transitions extending from the origin. We argue for a dynamical interpretation of the unstable physics in the negative specific heat region. A deformation corresponding to a dyonic Taub-NUT/Bolt system is also explored, and the effect of the deformation on the phase diagram …
We present a new exact solution for self-dual Abelian gauge fields living on the space of the Kerr-Taub-bolt instanton, which is a generalized example of asymptotically flat instantons with non-self-dual curvature, by constructing the corresponding square integrable harmonic form on this space.
Using a solution generating technique, we derive a new exact solution describing a charged static black ring on the Taub-bolt gravitational instanton in five dimensions. Unlike the black ring constructed on the self-dual Taub-NUT instanton, it turns out that it is possible to find values of the parameters for which the static black ring is in equilibrium and the conical singularities disappear. We compute its conserved charges and discuss some of its thermodynamic properties.
We construct a new exact solution of the Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton field equations in five dimensions, which describes a system of two general charged and static black holes sitting at the two turning points of the Taub-bolt instanton. We show that in this case the conical singularities can be completely eliminated and the black hole system remains in static equilibrium. We show how to recover some of the known solutions in particular cases and also obtain as a new solution the extremal double-black hole solution on the Taub-bolt instanton. Finally, we compute the conserved charges and investig…
We apply a recent proposal for defining conserved mass in asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes to the class of Taub-Bolt-dS spacetimes. We compute the action, entropy and conserved mass of these spacetimes, and find that in certain instances the mass and entropy can exceed that of pure de Sitter spacetime, in violation of recent suggestive conjectures to the contrary.
In theories of semi-classical quantum gravity where the cosmological constant is considered a thermodynamic variable, the gravitational mass of a black hole has been shown to correspond to the enthalpy of the thermodynamic system, rather than the energy. We propose that this should be extended to all spacetime solutions, and consider the meaning of this extension of gravitational thermodynamics for the Taub-NUT and Taub-Bolt geometries in four dimensional locally anti-de Sitter spacetime. We present formulae for their thermodynamic volumes. Surprisingly, Taub-NUT has negative volume, for which…
We construct asymptotically Kaluza-Klein solutions in five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory which represent a pair of extremal, charged, static black holes on Kerr-Taub-bolt space. Regularity conditions require that the topology of spatial infinity and that of each black hole are not S$^3$, but different lens spaces. We show that for a given topology at spatial infinity, there are an infinite number of different horizon topologies for the black hole pair. We briefly discuss a generalization to the case with a positive cosmological constant.
We consider a finite action for a higher dimensional Taub-NUT/Bolt-(A)dS space via the so-called counter term subtraction method. In the limit of high temperature, we show that the Cardy-Verlinde formula holds for the Taub-Bolt-AdS metric and for the specific dimensional Taub-NUT-(A)dS metric, except for the Taub-Bolt-dS metric.
We show that the class of four-dimensional Taub-Bolt(NUT) spacetimes with positive cosmological constant for some values of NUT charges are stable and have entropies that are greater than that of de Sitter spacetime, in violation of the entropic N-bound conjecture. We also show that the maximal mass conjecture, which states "any asymptotically dS spacetime with mass greater than dS has a cosmological singularity", can be violated as well. Our calculation of conserved mass and entropy is based on an extension of the path integral formulation to asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes.
Recent work has shown the existence of a unique nonlinear extension of electromagnetism which preserves conformal symmetry and allows for the freedom of duality rotations. Moreover, black holes and gravitational waves have been found to exist in this nonlinearly extended electrovacuum. We generalise these dyonic black holes in two major ways: with the relaxation of their horizon topology and with the inclusion of magnetic mass. Motivated by recent attention to traversable wormholes, we use this new family of Taub-NUT spaces to construct AdS wormholes. We explore some thermodynamic features by …
We consider the conformal field theory which is dual to the Taub-Bolt-AdS spacetime. It is shown that the Cardy-Verlinde formula for the entropy of the conformal field theory agrees precisely with the entropy of the Taub-Bolt-AdS spacetime, at high temperatures. This result may be viewed as providing a conformal field theory interpretation of Taub-Bolt-AdS entropy.
For an $SU(2)\times U(1)$-invariant $S^3$ boundary the classical Dirichlet problem of Riemannian quantum gravity is studied for positive-definite regular solutions of the Einstein equations with a negative cosmological constant within biaxial Bianchi-IX metrics containing bolts, i.e., within the family of Taub-Bolt-anti-de Sitter (Taub-Bolt-AdS) metrics. Such metrics are obtained from the two-parameter Taub-NUT-anti-de Sitter family. The condition of regularity requires them to have only one free parameter ($L$) and constrains $L$ to take values within a narrow range; the other parameter is de…
We investigate the extended thermodynamic properties of higher-dimensional Taub-NUT/Bolt-AdS spaces where a cosmological constant is treated as a pressure. We find a general form for thermodynamic volumes of Taub-NUT/Bolt-AdS black holes for arbitrary dimensions. Interestingly, it is found that the Taub-NUT-AdS metric has a thermodynamically stable range when the total number of dimensions is a multiple of 4 (4, 8, 12, ...). We also explore their phase structure and find the first order phase transition holds for higher-dimensional cases.
It is shown that aspects of the extended thermodynamic properties of the Taub-Bolt-AdS spacetime in four dimensions are similar to those of the Schwarzschild-AdS black hole. In a high temperature expansion, the equations of state begin to deviate only at next-to-subleading orders. By analogy with what has been done for black holes, Taub-Bolt's thermodynamic equations are used to define holographic heat engines, the first examples of gravitational heat engines defined using a spacetime that is not a black hole. As a further comparison, the Taub-Bolt engine efficiency is computed for two special…
We argue that previously suggested metrics for rotating Taub-bolt instantons do not satisfy all the necessary regularity conditions, and we present a family of new regular rotating Taub-bolts labelled by an odd integer $k$. There are two types of rotating bolt solutions. The first infinite sequence starts with non-rotating Taub-NUT with positive mass $M_k=N$ for $a=0$ and goes to $(k-2)N$ for $|a|\to \infty$ (or $N$ for $k=1$), where $a$ is the rotation parameter. For the second sequence of rotating Page bolts, the masses $M_k$ go through the value $M_k=5N/4$ for $a=0$ and asymptote to $(k+2)N…
We present a class of higher dimensional solutions to Einstein-Maxwell equations in d-dimensions. These solutions are asymptotically locally flat, de-Sitter, or anti-de Sitter space-times. The solutions we obtained depend on two extra parameters other than the mass and the nut charge. These two parameters are the electric charge, q and the electric potential at infinity, V, which has a non-trivial contribution. We Analyze the conditions one can impose to obtain Taub-Nut or Taub-Bolt space-times, including the four-dimensional case. We found that in the nut case these conditions coincide with t…
We discuss the action of a circle isometry group on non compact Euclidean Einstein manifolds. We discuss approaches to a decomposition of the action and entropy for non compact manifolds in terms of the characteristics of the orbit space of a suitable isometry. There is entropy associated with non trivial cohomology of the orbit space of the isometry, and we consider a class of non compact solutions for which such contributions do not vanish. To obtain suitable solutions we generalise the Bais-Batenburg construction of higher dimensional Taub-Nut type solutions to obtain the corresponding bolt…
This paper studies the space of $L ^2 $ harmonic forms and $L ^2 $ harmonic spinors on Taub-bolt, a Ricci-flat Riemannian 4-manifold of ALF type. We prove that the space of harmonic square-integrable 2-forms on Taub-bolt is 2-dimensional and construct a basis. We explicitly find a 2-parameter family of $L ^2 $ zero modes of the Dirac operator twisted by an arbitrary $L ^2 $ harmonic connection. We also show that the number of zero modes found is equal to the index of the Dirac operator. We compare our results with those known in the case of Taub-NUT and Euclidean Schwarzschild as these manifol…
Partition functions can be calculated by saddle point approximations whenever regular solutions exist, as they dominate the path integral. We examine a regular Taub-Bolt dyon of Einstein-Born-Infeld theory which has electric and magnetic flux proportional to each other. Magnetic flux is found to be essentially a winding number and the electric flux turns out to be indexed by it.
We investigate the thermodynamical properties of solutions to the 5D Einstein and Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton equations describing static black holes on ALF gravitational instantons. Some general expressions regarding the nut charge and potential are derived, as well as Smarr-like relations. The thermodynamics of two particular solutions representing a static black hole on Taub-Nut and Taub-Bolt instantons are examined in detail. Two dierent approaches for computation of the mass and the tension - the Komar and counterterm method, are applied and compared. A new charged black hole on Taub-Bolt in…
We construct various non-singular p-branes on higher-dimensional generalizations of Taub-NUT and Taub-BOLT instantons. Among other solutions, these include S^1-wrapped D3-branes and M5-branes, as well as deformed M2-branes. The resulting geometries smoothly interpolate between product spaces which include Minkowski elements of different dimensionality. The new solutions do not preserve any supersymmetry.
We consider four dimensional stationary and axially symmetric spacetimes for conformally coupled scalar-tensor theories. We show that, in analogy to the Lewis-Papapetrou problem in General Relativity (GR), the theory at hand can be recast in an analogous integrable form. We give the relevant rod formalism, introduced by Weyl for vacuum GR, explicitly giving the rod structure of the black hole of Bocharova et al. and Bekenstein (BBMB), in complete analogy to the Schwarzschild solution. The additional scalar field is shown to play the role of an extra Weyl potential. We then employ the Ernst met…
We study the spectrum of Laplace operators on a one-parameter family of gravitational instantons of bi-axial Bianchi IX type coupled to an abelian connection with self-dual curvature. The family of geometries includes the Taub-NUT, Taub-bolt and Euclidean Schwarzschild geometries and interpolates between them. The interpolating geometries have conical singularities along a submanifold of co-dimension two, but we prove that the associated Laplace operators have natural self-adjoint extensions and study their spectra. In particular, we determine the essential spectrum and prove that its compleme…
We show that a given conformal boundary can have a rich and intricate space of supersymmetric supergravity solutions filling it, focusing on the case where this conformal boundary is a biaxially squashed Lens space. Generically we find that the biaxially squashed Lens space S^3/Z_p admits Taub-NUT-AdS fillings, with topology R^4/Z_p, as well as smooth Taub-Bolt-AdS fillings with non-trivial topology. We show that the Taub-NUT-AdS solutions always lift to solutions of M-theory, and correspondingly that the gravitational free energy then agrees with the large N limit of the dual field theory fre…
We examine the thermodynamics of Euclidean dyonic Taub-NUT/Bolt-AdS4 black holes for a variety of horizon geometries to understand how gauge field regularity conditions influence the thermodynamic relations. We find several distinct features that distinguish the NUT-charged case from its dyonic Reissner-Nordstrom counterpart. For the NUT solution, the gauge field vanishes at the horizon and so regularity is ensured. For the Bolt solution we find that the norm of the gauge field is required to vanish at the horizon in order to satisfy both regularity and the first law of thermodynamics. This re…
We give a review of the existence of Taub-NUT/bolt solutions in Einstein Gauss-Bonnet gravity with the parameter $α$ in six dimensions. Although the spacetime with base space $S^{2}\times S^{2}$ has curvature singularity at $r=N$, which does not admit NUT solutions, we may proceed with the same computations as in the $\mathbb{CP}^{2}$ case. The investigation of thermodynamics of NUT/Bolt solutions in six dimensions is carried out. We compute the finite action, mass, entropy, and temperature of the black hole. Then the validity of the first law of thermodynamics is demonstrated. It is shown tha…
We present a class of higher dimensional solutions to Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell equations in $2k+2$ dimensions with a U(1) fibration over a $2k$-dimensional base space $\mathcal{B}$. These solutions depend on two extra parameters, other than the mass and the NUT charge, which are the electric charge $q$ and the electric potential at infinity $V$. We find that the form of metric is sensitive to geometry of the base space, while the form of electromagnetic field is independent of $\mathcal{B}$. We investigate the existence of Taub-NUT/bolt solutions and find that in addition to the two conditions of …
We construct a plethora of new Euclidean AdS-Taub-NUT and bolt solutions of several four- and six-dimensional higher-curvature theories of gravity with various base spaces $\mathcal{B}$. In $D=4$, we consider Einsteinian cubic gravity, for which we construct solutions with $\mathcal{B}=\mathbb{S}^2,\mathbb{T}^2$. These represent the first generalizations of the Einstein gravity Taub-NUT/bolt solutions for any higher-curvature theory in four dimensions. In $D=6$, we show that no new solutions are allowed for any Generalized quasi-topological gravity at cubic order. They exist however when we co…
The Dirichlet boundary-value problem and isoperimetric inequalities for positive definite regular solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations are studied in arbitrary dimensions for the class of metrics with boundaries admitting a U(1) action. We show that in the case of non-trivial bundles Taub-Bolt infillings are double-valued whereas Taub-Nut and Eguchi-Hanson infillings are unique. In the case of trivial bundles, there are two Schwarzschild infillings in arbitrary dimensions. The condition of whether a particular type of filling in is possible can be expressed as a limitation on squashing t…
Recent results in the literature concerning holography indicate that the thermodynamics of quantum gravity (at least with a negative cosmological constant) can be modeled by the large N thermodynamics of quantum field theory. We emphasize that this suggests a completely unitary evolution of processes in quantum gravity, including black hole formation and decay; and even more extreme examples involving topology change. As concrete examples which show that this correspondence holds even when the space-time is only locally asymptotically AdS, we compute the thermodynamical phase structure of the …
First, we construct the Taub-NUT/bolt solutions of $(2k+2)$-dimensinal Einstein-Maxwell gravity, when all the factor spaces of $2k$-dimensional base space $\mathcal{B}$ have positive curvature. These solutions depend on two extra parameters, other than the mass and the NUT charge. These are electric charge $q$ and electric potential at infinity $V$. We investigate the existence of Taub-NUT solutions and find that in addition to the two conditions of uncharged NUT solutions, there exist two extra conditions. These two extra conditions come from the regularity of vector potential at $r=N$ and th…
Based on the recent paper hep-th/0503045, we derive a formula of calculating conserved charges in even dimensional asymptotically {\it locally} anti-de Sitter space-times by using the definition of Wald and Zoupas. This formula generalizes the one proposed by Ashtekar {\it et al}. Using the new formula we compute the masses of Taub-Bolt-AdS space-times by treating Taub-Nut-AdS space-times as the reference solution. Our result agrees with those resulting from "background subtraction" method or "boundary counterterm" method. We also calculate the conserved charges of Kerr-Taub-Nut-AdS solutions …
We show that the Plebanski-Demianski spacetime persists as a solution of General Relativity when the theory is supplemented with both, a conformally coupled scalar theory and with quadratic curvature corrections. The quadratic terms are of two types and are given by quadratic combinations of the Riemann tensor as well as a higher curvature interaction constructed with a scalar field which is conformally coupled to quadratic terms in the curvature. The later is built in terms of a four-rank tensor $S_{μν}^{\ \ λρ}$ that depends on the Riemann tensor and the scalar field, and that transforms cov…
We solve the O(N) vector model at large N on a squashed three-sphere with a conformal mass term. Using the Klebanov-Polyakov version of the AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence we match various aspects of the strongly coupled theory with the physics of the bulk AdS Taub-NUT and AdS Taub-Bolt geometries. Remarkably, we find that the field theory reproduces the behaviour of the bulk free energy as a function of the squashing parameter. The O(N) model is realised in a symmetric phase for all finite values of the coupling and squashing parameter, including when the boundary scalar curvature is negative.
The classical boundary-value problem of the Einstein field equations is studied with an arbitrary cosmological constant, in the case of a compact ($S^{3}$) boundary given a biaxial Bianchi-IX positive-definite three-metric, specified by two radii $(a,b).$ For the simplest, four-ball, topology of the manifold with this boundary, the regular classical solutions are found within the family of Taub-NUT-(anti)de Sitter metrics with self-dual Weyl curvature. For arbitrary choice of positive radii $(a,b),$ we find that there are three solutions for the infilling geometry of this type. We obtain exact…
We present novel regular Euclidean solutions to General Relativity in presence of Maxwell and conformally coupled scalar fields. In particular, we consider metrics of the Eguchi-Hanson and Taub-NUT families to solve the field equations analytically. The solutions have nontrivial topology labeled by the Hirzebruch signature and Euler characteristic that we compute explicitly. We find that, although the solutions are locally inequivalent with the original (anti-)self-dual Eguchi-Hanson metric, their asymptotically locally Euclidean limit leads to the same global properties. We revisit the Taub-N…
On a manifold with boundary, the constraint algebra of general relativity may acquire a central extension, which can be computed using covariant phase space techniques. When the boundary is a (local) Killing horizon, a natural set of boundary conditions leads to a Virasoro subalgebra with a calculable central charge. Conformal field theory methods may then be used to determine the density of states at the boundary. I consider a number of cases---black holes, Rindler space, de Sitter space, Taub-NUT and Taub-Bolt spaces, and dilaton gravity---and show that the resulting density of states yields…
It has been proposed that spacetimes with a U(1) isometry group have contributions to the entropy from Misner strings as well as from the area of $d-2$ dimensional fixed point sets. In this paper we test this proposal by constructing Taub-Nut-AdS and Taub-Bolt-AdS solutions which are examples of a new class of asymptotically locally anti-de Sitter spaces. We find that with the additional contribution from the Misner strings, we exactly reproduce the entropy calculated from the action by the usual thermodynamic relations. This entropy has the right parameter dependence to agree with the entropy…
The semi-classical stability of several AdS NUT instantons is studied. Throughout, the notion of stability is that of stability at the one-loop level of Euclidean Quantum Gravity. Instabilities manifest themselves as negative eigenmodes of a modified Lichnerowicz Laplacian acting on the transverse traceless perturbations. An instability is found for one branch of the AdS-Taub-Bolt family of metrics and it is argued that the other branch is stable. It is also argued that the AdS-Taub-NUT family of metrics are stable. A component of the continuous spectrum of the modified Lichnerowicz operator o…
We derive a simple formula for the action of any supersymmetric solution to minimal gauged supergravity in the AdS$_4$/CFT$_3$ correspondence. Such solutions are equipped with a supersymmetric Killing vector, and we show that the holographically renormalized action may be expressed entirely in terms of the weights of this vector field at its fixed points, together with certain topological data. In this sense, the classical gravitational partition function localizes in the bulk. We illustrate our general formula with a number of explicit examples, in which exact dual field theory computations a…
The partition function of a three-dimensional $\mathcal{N} =2$ theory on the manifold $\mathcal{M}_{g,p}$, an $S^1$ bundle of degree $p$ over a closed Riemann surface $Σ_g$, was recently computed via supersymmetric localization. In this paper, we compute these partition functions at large $N$ in a class of quiver gauge theories with holographic M-theory duals. We provide the supergravity bulk dual having as conformal boundary such three-dimensional circle bundles. These configurations are solutions to $\mathcal{N}=2$ minimal gauged supergravity and pertain to the class of Taub-NUT-AdS and Taub…
We establish an explicit correspondence of Einstein gravity on the squashed spheres that are the $U(1)$ bundles over $\mathbb{CP}^m$ to the Kaluza-Klein AdS gravity on the tori. This allows us to map the Ricci-flat Kerr metrics in odd dimensions with all equal angular momenta to charged Kaluza-Klein AdS black holes that can be lifted to become singly rotating M-branes and D3-branes. Furthermore, we find maps between Ricci-flat gravitational instantons to the AdS domain walls. In particular the supersymmetric bolt instantons correspond to domain walls that can be interpreted as distributed M-br…
We investigate the existence of Taub-NUT/bolt solutions in Gauss-Bonnet gravity and obtain the general form of these solutions in $d$ dimensions. We find that for all non-extremal NUT solutions of Einstein gravity having no curvature singularity at $r=N$, there exist NUT solutions in Gauss-Bonnet gravity that contain these solutions in the limit that the Gauss-Bonnet parameter $α$ goes to zero. Furthermore there are no NUT solutions in Gauss-Bonnet gravity that yield non-extremal NUT solutions to Einstein gravity having a curvature singularity at $r=N$ in the limit $% α\to 0$. Indeed, we have …
