We report detailed temperature-dependent inelastic neutron scattering and ab-initio lattice dynamics investigation of magnetic perovskites YCrO3 and LaCrO3. The magnetic neutron scattering from the Cr ions exhibits significant changes with temperature and dominates at low momentum transfer regime. Ab-inito calculations performed including magnetic interactions show that the effect of magnetic interaction is very signicant on the low- as well as high-energy phonon modes. We have also shown that the inelastic neutron spectrum of YCrO3 mimics the magnon spectrum from a G-type antiferromagnetic system, which is consistent with previously reported magnetic structure in the compound. The ab-initio lattice dynamics calculations in both the compounds exhibit anisotropic thermal expansion behaviour in the orthorhombic structure and predict negative thermal expansion along the crystallographic a-axis at low temperatures. We identify the anharmonic phonon modes responsible for this anamolous behaviour in LaCrO3 involving low-energy La vibrations and distortions of the CrO6 octahedra.
Phonon chirality has attracted intensive attention since it breaks the traditional cognition that phonons are linear propagating bosons. This new quasiparticle property has been extensively studied theoretically and experimentally. However, characterization of the phonon chirality throughout the full Brillouin zone is still not possible due to the lack of available experimental tools. In this work, phonon dispersion and chirality of tungsten carbide were investigated by millielectronvolt energy-resolution inelastic X-ray scattering. The atomistic calculation indicates that in-plane longitudina…
Inelastic scattering experiments are key methods for mapping the full dispersion of fundamental excitations of solids in the ground as well as non-equilibrium states. A quantitative analysis of inelastic scattering in terms of phonon excitations requires identifying the role of multi-phonon processes. Here, we develop an efficient first-principles methodology for calculating the all-phonon quantum mechanical structure factor of solids. We demonstrate our method by obtaining excellent agreement between measurements and calculations of the diffuse scattering patterns of black phosphorus, showing…
Longitudinal-optical (LO) mode phonon branches of KCl and NaCl were measured using inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS) at 300 K and calculated by the first-principles phonon calculation with the stochastic self-consistent harmonic approximation. Spectral shapes of the IXS measurements and calculated spectral functions agreed well. We analyzed the calculated spectral functions that provide higher resolutions of the spectra than the IXS measurements. Due to strong anharmonicity, the spectral functions of these phonon branches have several peaks and the LO modes along $Γ$--L paths are disconnected.
The use of inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) to investigate phonons and phonon dispersion in crystals opens the field of phonon spectroscopy, allowing measurements on tiny samples: micrograms of material, or single crystals ~10 to 100 micron diameter are sufficient. Here we review the technique as it is practiced at BL35XU of SPring-8, in Hyogo prefecture. An introduction is provided that is aimed at potential IXS users, highlighting the unique and advantageous aspects of the technique. Present work, including several example experiments, and future directions are discussed.
We present neutron inelastic scattering measurements of the low-energy phonons in single crystal BiFeO3. The dispersions of the three acoustic phonon modes (LA along [100], TA1 along [010] and TA2 along [110]) and two low energy optic phonon modes (LO and TO1) have been mapped out between 300 K and 700 K. Elastic constants are extracted from the phonon measurements. The energy linewidths of both TA phonons at the zone boundary clearly broaden when the system is warmed toward the magnetic ordering temperature TN = 640 K. This suggests that the magnetic and low-energy lattice dynamics in this mu…
We present the full in-plane phonon dispersion of graphite obtained from inelastic x-ray scattering, including the optical and acoustic branches, as well as the mid-frequency range between the $K$ and $M$ points in the Brillouin zone, where experimental data have been unavailable so far. The existence of a Kohn anomaly at the $K$ point is further supported. We fit a fifth-nearest neighbour force-constants model to the experimental data, making improved force-constants calculations of the phonon dispersion in both graphite and carbon nanotubes available.
Cyanide based framework compounds are known to show large negative thermal expansion behaviour. Here we report the phonon and anomalous lattice behavior of two metal cyanide framework compounds i.e. KMnAg3(CN)6 and KNiAu3(CN)6. We have studied the role of van der Waals dispersion and magnetic interactions on structural stability of these compounds. The behavior of these compounds under isotropic compression shows the presence of negative linear compressibility. The calculated phonon spectra, validated by inelastic neutron scattering measurements and elastic constants are used to study the nega…
Inelastic effects arising from electron-phonon coupling in molecular Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometers are studied using the nonequilibrium Green's function method. Results for the magnetoconductance are compared for different values of the electron-phonon coupling strength. At low bias voltages, the coupling to the phonons does not change the lifetime and leads mainly to scattering phase shifts of the conducting electrons. Surprisingly, opposite to the behavior of an electrical gate, the magnetoconductance of the molecular AB interferometer becomes more sensitive to the threading magnetic fl…
Inelastic neutron scattering measurements are utilized to explore relative changes in the generalized phonon density of states of nanocrystalline Si1xGex thermoelectric materials prepared via ball milling and hot-pressing techniques. Dynamic signatures of Ge clustering can be inferred from the data by referencing the resulting spectra to a density functional theoretical model assuming homogeneous alloying via the virtual-crystal approximation. Comparisons are also presented between as-milled Si nanopowder and bulk, polycrystalline Si where a preferential low-energy enhancement and lifetime bro…

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the phonon spectra in a pure powder sample of the multiferroic material BiFeO3. A high-temperature range was covered to unravel the changes in the phonon dynamics across the Neel (T_N ~ 650 K) and Curie (T_C ~ 1100 K) temperatures. Experimental results are accompanied by ab-initio lattice dynamical simulations of phonon density of states to enable microscopic interpretations of the observed data. The calculations reproduce well the observed vibrational features and provide the partial atomic vibrational components. Our results reveal clear…
We investigate detailed lattice dynamics of copper halides CuX (X=Cl, Br, I) using neutron inelastic scattering measurements and ab-initio calculations aimed at a comparative study of their thermal expansion behavior. We identify the low energy phonons which soften with pressure and are responsible for negative thermal expansion. The eigenvector analysis of these modes suggests that softening of the transverse-acoustic modes would lead to NTE in these compounds. The calculations are in very good agreement with our measurements of phonon spectra and thermal expansion behavior as reported in the…
We have measured the room-temperature phonon spectrum of Mo-stabilized $γ-$U. The dispersion curves show unusual softening near the H point, q=[1/2,1/2,1/2], which may derive from the metastability of the $γ-$U phase or from strong electron-phonon coupling. Near the zone center, the dispersion curves agree well with theory, though significant differences are observed away from the zone center. The experimental phonon density of states is shifted to higher energy compared to theory and high-temperature neutron scattering. The elastic constants of $γ$-UMo are similar to those of body-centered cu…
Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) is a promising technique for obtaining electron-phonon coupling constants. However, the ability to extract these coupling constants throughout the Brillouin zone for crystalline materials remains limited. To address this need, we developed a Green's function formalism to capture electron-phonon contributions to core-level spectroscopies without explicitly solving the full vibronic problem. Our approach is based on the cumulant expansion of the Green's function combined with many-body theory calculated vibrational coupling constants. The methodology is…
We have carried out an extensive phonon study on multiferroic GaFeO3 to elucidate its dynamical behavior. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements are performed over a wide temperature range, 150 to 1198 K. First principles lattice dynamical calculations are done for the sake of the analysis and interpretation of the observations. The comparison of the phonon spectra from magnetic and non-magnetic calculations highlights pronounced differences. The energy range of the vibrational atomistic contributions of the Fe and O ions are found to differ significantly in the two calculation types. There…
Phonon lifetimes are a key component of quasiparticle theories of transport, yet first-principles lifetimes are rarely directly compared to inelastic neutron scattering (INS) results. Existing comparisons show discrepancies even at temperatures where perturbation theory is expected to be reliable. In this work, we demonstrate that the reciprocal space voxel ($q$-voxel), which is the finite region in reciprocal space required in INS data analysis, must be explicitly accounted for within theory in order to draw a meaningful comparison. We demonstrate accurate predictions of peak widths of the sc…
The phonon renormalization across the semiconductor-to-metal crossover in FeSi is investigated by inelastic neutron scattering combined with \textit{ab-initio} lattice dynamical calculations. A significant part of reciprocal space with a particular focus on the 110$-$001 scattering plane is mapped by the time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering data taken below and above the crossover. Individual momentum values are investigated in more detail as a function of temperature. The data reveal that the anomalous phonon softening upon metallization is not exclusive to the high symmetry $R$ and $Γ…
Ba2Ti2Fe2As4O is a self-doped superconductor exhibiting a Tc ~ 21.5 K and containing, distinctively with respect to other Fe-based superconductors, not only [Fe2As2] layers but also conducting [Ti2O] sheets. This compound exhibits a transition at T* ~ 125 K which has tentatively been assigned in the literature to a possible density-wave order. However, the nature of this density wave (whether it is a charge- or spin-induced) is still under debate. Magnetism in Ba2Ti2Fe2As4O has never been experimentally confirmed, which raises the question whether this superconductor might be non-magnetic or e…
We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements of phonon spectra in the parent superconductor iron-tuned chalcogenide Fe$_{1+x}$Te, for two different x contents (x $\leq$ 0.11), using neutron time-of-flight technique. Thermal neutron spectroscopy allowed to collect the low-temperature Stokes spectra over an extended Q-range, at 2, 40 and 120K - hence covering both the magnetic monoclinic and the paramagnetic tetragonal phases. Whereas cold-neutrons allowed to measure high-resolution anti-Stokes spectra at 140, 220 and 300K, thus covering the tetragonal phase. Our results evidence a spin-p…
Phonon transmission across an interface between dissimilar crystalline solids is calculated using molecular dynamics simulations with interatomic force constants obtained from first principles. The results reveal that although inelastic phonon-transmission right at the geometrical interface can become far greater than the elastic one, its contribution to thermal boundary conductance (TBC) is severely limited by the transition regions, where local phonon states at the interface recover the bulk state over a finite thickness. This suggests TBC can be increased by enhancing phonon equilibration i…
We present temperature dependent inelastic neutron scattering measurments, accompanied byab-initio calculations of phonon spectra and elastic properties as a function of pressure to understand anharmonicity of phonons and to study the mechanism of negative thermal expansion and negative linear compressibility behaviour of ZnAu2(CN)4. The mechanism is identified in terms of specific anharmonic modes that involve bending of the Zn(CN)4-Au- Zn(CN)4 linkage. The high-pressure phase transition at about 2 GPa is also investigated and found to be related to softening of a phonon mode at the L-point a…
By combining neutron inelastic scattering (NIS) and first-principles calculations, we have investigated the lattice dynamics of MOF5. The structural stability of MOF5 was evaluated by calculating the three cubic elastic constants. We find that the shear modulus, c44 = 1.16 GPA, is unusually small, while two other moduli are relatively large (i.e. c11 = 29.42 GPa and c12 = 12.56 GPa). We predict that MOF5 is very close to structural instability and may yield interesting new phases under high pressure and strain. The phonon dispersion curves and phonon density of states were directly calculated …
We show that high resolution Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) provides direct, element-specific and momentum-resolved information on the electron-phonon (e-p) coupling strength. Our theoretical analysis demonstrates that the e-p coupling can be extracted from RIXS spectra by determining the differential phonon scattering cross section. An alternative, very direct manner to extract the coupling is to use the one and two-phonon loss ratio, which is governed by the e-p coupling strength and the core-hole life-time. This allows measurement of the e-p coupling on an absolute energy scale.
Beta eucryptite (LiAlSiO4) shows one-dimensional super-ionic conductivity as well as anisotropic thermal expansion behavior. We have performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements in beta eucryptite over 300 to 900 K and calculated the phonon spectrum using ab initio density functional theory method. The calculated energy profile for cooperative lithium ion displacements indicates preferential movement of Li ion along the hexagonal c-axis in the high temperature phase. However, the energy barrier for Li ion diffusion is significantly reduced when a Schottky defect is introduced in the cry…
We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements over 7-1251 K in CaMnO3 covering various phase transitions, and over 6-150 K in PrMnO3 covering the magnetic transition. The excitations around 20 meV in CaMnO3 and at 17 meV in PrMnO3 are found to be associated with magnetic origin. In spite of similarity of the structure of the two compounds, the neutron inelastic spectrum of PrMnO3 exhibits broad features at 150 K unlike well-defined peaks in the spectrum of CaMnO3. This might result from the difference in nature of interactions in the two compounds (magnetic and Jahn-Teller distortion). T…
Inelastic phonon scattering in graphene field-effect transistors (FETs) is studied by numerically solving the Boltzmann transport equation in three dimensional real and phase spaces (x, kx, ky). A kink behavior due to ambipolar transport agreeing with experiments is observed. While low field behavior has previously been mostly attributed to elastic impurity scattering in earlier studies, it is found in the study that even low field mobility is affected by inelastic phonon scattering in recent graphene FET experiments reporting high mobilities . As the FET is biased in the saturation regime, th…
Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the N K edge reveals clearly resolved harmonics of the anion plane vibrations in the kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu2(CN)3 spin-liquid insulator. Tuning the incoming light energy at the K edge of two distinct N sites permits to excite different sets of phonon modes. Cyanide CN stretching mode is selected at the edge of the ordered N sites which are more strongly connected to the BEDT-TTF molecules, while positionally disordered N sites show multi-mode excitation. Combining measurements with calculations on an anion plane cluster permits to estimate the sitedependent …
We have determined the lattice dynamics of MgSiO$_3$ perovskite (bridgmanite) by a combination of single-crystal inelastic x-ray scattering and ab initio calculations. We observe a remarkable agreement between experiment and theory, and provide accurate results for phonon dispersion relations, phonon density of states and the full elasticity tensor. The present work constitutes an important milestone to extend this kind of combined studies to extreme conditions of pressure and temperature, directly relevant for the physics and the chemistry of Earth's lower mantle.
We report results of an investigation of the temperature dependence of the magnon and phonon frequencies in NiO. A combination of Brillouin - Mandelstam and Raman spectroscopies allowed us to elucidate the evolution of the phonon and magnon spectral signatures from the Brillouin zone center (GHz range) to the second-order peaks from the zone boundary (THz range). The temperature-dependent behavior of the magnon and phonon bands in the NiO spectrum indicates the presence of antiferromagnetic (AF) order fluctuation or a persistent AF state at temperatures above the Neel temperature (T=523 K). Tu…
We report first principles density functional perturbation theory calculations and inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the phonon density of states, dispersion relations and electromechanical response of PbTiO3, BaTiO3 and SrTiO3. The phonon density-of-states of the quantum paraelectric SrTiO3 is found to be fundamentally distinct from that of ferroelectric PbTiO3 and BaTiO3 with a large 70-90 meV phonon band-gap. The phonon dispersion and electromechanical response of PbTiO3 reveal giant anisotropies. The interplay of covalent bonding and ferroelectricity, strongly modulates the elec…
We report the observation of multiple phonon satellite features in ultra thin superlattices of form $n$SrIrO$_3$/$m$SrTiO$_3$ using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. As the values of $n$ and $m$ vary the energy loss spectra show a systematic evolution in the relative intensity of the phonon satellites. Using a closed-form solution for the cross section, we extract the variation in the electron-phonon coupling strength as a function of $n$ and $m$. Combined with the negligible carrier doping into the SrTiO$_3$ layers, these results indicate that tuning of the electron-phonon coupling can be …

Using a combination of density-functional perturbation theory and the itinerant coherent potential approximation, we study the effects of atomic relaxation on the inelastic incoherent neutron scattering cross sections of disordered Ni$_{50}$Pt$_{50}$ alloys. We build on previous work, where empirical force constants were adjusted {\it ad hoc} to agree with experiment. After first relaxing all structural parameters within the local-density approximation for ordered NiPt compounds, density-functional perturbation theory is then used to compute phonon spectra, densities of states, and the force c…
We report that the lowest energy transverse-optic phonon in metallic SnTe softens to near zero energy at the structural transition at $T_C=75 \text{~K}$ and importantly show that the energy of this mode below $T_C$ increases as the temperature decreases. Since the mode is a polar displacement this proves unambiguously that SnTe undergoes a ferroelectric displacement below $T_C$. Concentration gradients and imperfect stoichiometry in large crystals may explain why this was not seen in previous inelastic neutron scattering studies. Despite SnTe being metallic we find that the ferroelectric trans…
Zn(CN)2 is known to have an isotropic negative thermal expansion (NTE) coefficient (about -51 x 10-6 K-1) over 10-370 K that is twice as large as that of ZrW2O8. We have measured the pressure dependence of the phonon spectra up to 30 meV from a polycrystalline sample of Zn(CN)2 at pressures of 0, 0.3, 1.9 and 2.8 kbar at temperatures of 165 and 225 K. The measurements enabled us to estimate the energy dependence of the ratios Gamma/B (Gamma are Gruneisen parameters as a function of phonon energy Ei at ambient pressure and B is the bulk modulus), which reflect the anharmonicity of phonons. We c…
Interpretation of vibrational inelastic neutron scattering spectra of complex systems is frequently reliant on accompanying simulations from theoretical models. Ab-initio codes can routinely generate force constants, but additional steps are required for direct comparison to experimental spectra. On modern spectrometers this is a computationally expensive task due to the large data volumes collected. In addition, workflows are frequently cumbersome as the simulation software and experimental data analysis software often do not easily interface to each other. Here a new package, Euphonic, is pr…
We present a detailed ab-initio study of semi-classical transport in n-ZnSe using Rode's iterative method. Inclusion of ionized impurity, piezoelectric, acoustic deformation and polar optical phonon scattering and their relative importance at low and room temperature for various n-ZnSe samples are discussed in depth. We have clearly noted that inelastic polar optical phonon scattering is the most dominant scattering mechanism over most of the temperature region. Our results are in good agreement with the experimental data for the mobility and conductivity obtained at different doping concentra…
Zn(CN)2 and Ni(CN)2 are known for exhibiting anomalous thermal expansion over a wide temperature range. The volume thermal expansion coefficient for the cubic, three dimensionally connected material, Zn(CN)2, is negative (αV = -51 x 10-6 K-1) while for Ni(CN)2, a tetragonal material, the thermal expansion coefficient is negative in the two dimensionally connected sheets (αa=-7 x 10-6 K-1), but the overall thermal expansion coefficient is positive (αV=48 x 10-6 K-1). We have measured the temperature dependence of phonon spectra in these compounds and analyzed them using ab-initio calculations. …
We calculate the probabilities of two- and four-phonon Raman scattering in graphene and show how the relative intensities of the overtone peaks encode information about relative rates of different inelastic processes electrons are subject to. If the most important processes are electron-phonon and electron-electron scattering, the rate of the latter can be deduced from the Raman spectra.
Phonon densities of states (DOS) for the high performing thermoelectric material, AgPbmSbTe2+m (LAST-m, m = 16, 18, and 20), were extracted from time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering measurements. The phonon DOS of LAST-18 differs remarkably from LAST-16 and LAST-20 by exhibiting a dramatic broadening of its acoustic modes that increases on heating. This broadening coincides with a minimum in the thermal conductivity, a maximum in the electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient, and a related peak in thermoelectric performance. We argue that the anomalous broadening originates with s…
Anomalous thermal expansion behaviour of several open frame-work compounds has been extensively investigated using the techniques of inelastic neutron scattering and lattice dynamics. These compounds involve increasing level of structural complexity and flexibility, which leads to increased values of thermal expansion coefficients approaching colossal values. In several compounds, neutron inelastic scattering experiments have produced quantitative estimates of the anharmonicity of phonons over a range of low energies, and thereby explained the observed thermal expansion quantitatively. The anh…
We report measurement of temperature dependence of phonon spectra in quasi one-dimensional metal cyanides MCN (M=Cu, Ag and Au). Ab initio lattice dynamics calculations have been performed to interpret the phonon-spectra as well as to understand the anamolous thermal expansion behavior in these compounds. We bring out the differences in the phonon mode behavior to explain the differences in the thermal expansion behavior among the three compounds. The chain-sliding modes are found to contribute maximum to the negative thermal expansion along c axis in the Cu and Ag compounds, while the same mo…
We report here first extensive measurements of the temperature dependence of phonon density of states of BaFe2As2, the parent compound of the newly discovered FeAs-based superconductors, using inelastic neutron scattering. The experiments were carried out on the thermal time-of-flight neutron spectrometer IN4 at the ILL on a polycrystalline sample. There is no appreciable change in the spectra between T = 10 K and 200 K, although the sample undergoes a magnetic as well as a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural phase transition at 140 K. This indicates a rather harmonic phonon system. Shell mo…
Sodium niobate (NaNbO3) exhibits most complex sequence of structural phase transitions in perovskite family and therefore provides as excellent model system for understanding the mechanism of structural phase transitions. We report temperature dependence of inelastic neutron scattering measurements of phonon densities of states in sodium niobate. The measurements are carried out in various crystallographic phases of this material at various temperatures from 300 K to 1048 K. The phonon spectra exhibit peaks centered around 19, 37, 51, 70 and 105 meV. Interestingly, the peak around 70 meV shift…
We have performed extensive ab initio calculations to investigate phonon dynamics and their possible role in superconductivity in BaFe2As2 and related systems. The calculations are compared to inelastic neutron scattering data that offer improved resolution over published data [Mittal et al., PRB 78 104514 (2008)], in particular at low frequencies. Effects of structural phase transition and full/partial structural relaxation, with and without magnetic ordering, on the calculated vibrational density of states are reported. Phonons are best reproduced using either the relaxed magnetic structures…
The phonon dispersion unfolding method is useful for obtaining hidden Bloch symmetries and comparing theoretical results with experiment spectrums (e.g., inelastic neutron scattering, inelastic X-ray scattering, Raman). In this paper, we propose a method to unfold phonon dispersions. The main advantage of this method is the ability to handle systems with heavy breaking of spatial translational symmetry. Its validity is tested by pure diamond, diamond with Si substitution, and diamond with C vacancies.
To understand spin interactions in materials of the Cu$_2$Sb structure type, inelastic neutron scattering of Fe$_2$As single crystals was examined at different temperatures and incident neutron energies. The experimental phonon spectra match well with the simulated phonon spectra obtained from density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The measured magnon spectra were compared to the simulated magnon spectra obtained via linear spin wave theory with the exchange coupling constants calculated using the spin polarized, relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method in Zhang et al. (2013). The sim…
Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) is increasingly used to quantify vibronic interactions in materials. In the case of periodic systems, this is most often done through fitting experimental results to a parameterized, but exact analytical solution of a simple Holstein Hamiltonian that consists of a single electronic level coupled linearly to a single Einstein vibrational mode. Working within this standard framework, we consider the impact of minor generalizations of this model, namely, introducing a second Einstein oscillator, and allowing the curvature of the excited-state potential e…
Lattice dynamics and high pressure phase transitions in AWO4 (A = Ba, Sr, Ca and Pb) have been investigated using inelastic neutron scattering experiments, ab-initio density functional theory calculations and extensive molecular dynamics simulations. The vibrational modes that are internal to WO4 tetrahedra occur at the highest energies consistent with the relative stability of WO4 tetrahedra. The neutron data and the ab-initio calculations are found to be in excellent agreement. The neutron and structural data are used to develop and validate an interatomic potential model. The model is used …
The dynamics of solid deuterium (sD2) is studied by means of inelastic scattering (coherent and incoherent) of thermal and cold neutrons at different temperatures and para-ortho ratios. In this paper, the results for the generalized density of states (GDOS) are presented and discussed. The measurements were performed at the thermal neutron time-of-flight (TOF) instrument IN4 at ILL Grenoble and at the cold neutron TOF instrument TOFTOF at FRM II Garching. The GDOS comprises besides the hcp phonon excitations of the sD2 the rotational transitions J = 0 ->1 and J = 1 -> 2. The intensities of the…
We develop a multidimensional coupled channel method suitable for studying the interplay of bound state resonance and phonon assisted scattering of inert gas atoms from solid surfaces in one, two and three dimensions. This enables us to get insight into the features that depend on the dimensionality of inelastic resonant processes typically encountered in low energy He atom scattering from surfaces, in general, and to elaborate on the observability of recently conjectured near threshold resonances in scattering from Einstein phonons, in particular.
We study inelastic electron tunneling through a molecular junction using the non-equilibrium Green function (NEGF) formalism. The effect of the mutual influence between the phonon and the electron subsystems on the electron tunneling process is considered within a general self-consistent scheme. Results of this calculation are compared to those obtained from the simpler Born approximation and the simplest perturbation theory approaches, and some shortcomings of the latter are pointed out. The self-consistent calculation allows also for evaluating other related quantities such as the power loss…
Inelastic x-ray scattering with meV energy resolution (IXS) is an ideal tool to measure collective excitations in solids and liquids. In non-resonant scattering condition, the cross section is strongly dominated by lattice vibrations (phonons). However, it is possible to probe additional degrees of freedom such as magnetic fluctuations that are strongly coupled to the phonons. The IXS spectrum of the coupled system will contain not only the phonon dispersion (majority component) but also the so far undetected magnetic correlation function (minority component). Here we report the discovery of s…
Electron-phonon scatterings in solid-state systems are pivotal processes in determining many key physical quantities such as charge carrier mobilities and thermal conductivities. Here, we report on the direct probing of phonon mode specific electron-phonon scatterings in layered semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides WSe2, MoSe2, WS2, and MoS2 through inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy measurements, quantum transport simulations, and density functional calculation. We experimentally and theoretically characterize momentum-conserving single- and two-phonon electron-phonon scatte…
The Stokes and anti-Stokes components in the inelastic scattering of light are related to phonon statistics and have been broadly used to measure temperature and phonon lifetimes in different materials. However, correlation between the components are expected to change the Stokes/anti-Stokes intensity ratio, imposing corrections to the broadly used Bose-Einstein statistics. Here the excitation power dependence of these scattering processes is theoretically described by an effective Hamiltonian that includes correlation between the Stokes and the anti-Stokes events. The model is used to fit ava…
An investigation is made into whether the reaction rate formalism also applies to describing inelastic tunneling vibronic processes associated with the absorption and emission of phonons. We propose that Bardeen-Christov's quantum-mechanical approach to the transition (tunneling) probabilities originally intended for elastic tunneling alone can formally be extended to cover inelastic tunneling as well. Namely, we show that inelastic tunneling through the absorption of p phonons can be regarded as an exothermic reaction with zero-point reaction heat H = -phv. Alternatively, inelastic tunneling …
The coupling between lattice and charge degrees of freedom in condensed matter materials is ubiquitous and can often result in interesting properties and ordered phases, including conventional superconductivity, charge density wave order, and metal-insulator transitions. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and both neutron and non-resonant x-ray scattering serve as effective probes for determining the behavior of appropriate, individual degrees of freedom -- the electronic structure and lattice excitation, or phonon dispersion, respectively. However, each provides less direct information…
