The dynamics of solid deuterium (sD2) is studied by means of inelastic scattering (coherent and incoherent) of thermal and cold neutrons at different temperatures and para-ortho ratios. In this paper, the results for the generalized density of states (GDOS) are presented and discussed. The measurements were performed at the thermal neutron time-of-flight (TOF) instrument IN4 at ILL Grenoble and at the cold neutron TOF instrument TOFTOF at FRM II Garching. The GDOS comprises besides the hcp phonon excitations of the sD2 the rotational transitions J = 0 ->1 and J = 1 -> 2. The intensities of these rotational excitations depend strongly on the ortho-D2 molecule concentration co in sD2. Above E = 10 meV there are still strong excitations, which very likely may originate from higher energy damped optical phonons and multi-phonon contributions. A method for separating the one- and multi-phononon contributions to the density of states willbe presented and discussed.
We present results of lattice dynamics calculations of the $P-V$ equation of state and the pressure dependence of the Raman-active $E_{2g}$ lattice phonon for $p-$H$_2$ and $o-$D$_2$ in a wide pressure range up to $\sim$2 Mbar using our recently developed semi-empirical many-body potential, and density-functional theory. Comparison with existing body of experimental and theoretical results showed that the employed many-body potential is a reliable basis for high-precision calculations for phases I, II, and III of solid hydrogens.
Quantum nuclear zero-point motions in solid H$_2$ and D$_2$ under pressure are investigated at 80 K up to 160 GPa by first-principles path-integral molecular dynamics calculations. Molecular orientations are well-defined in phase II of D$_2$, while solid H$_2$ exhibits large and very asymmetric angular quantum fluctuations in this phase, with possible rotation in the (bc) plane, making it difficult to associate a well-identified single classical structure. The mechanism for the transition to phase III is also described. Existing structural data support this microscopic interpretation.
The recent discovery of phase IV of solid hydrogen and deuterium consisting of two alternate layers of graphenelike three-molecule rings and unbound H2 molecules have generated great interests. However, vibrational nature of phase IV remains poorly understood. Here, we report a peculiar proton transfer and a simultaneous rotation of three molecule rings in graphenelike layers predicted by ab initio variable cell molecular dynamics simulations for phase IV of solid hydrogen and deuterium at pressure ranges of from 250 to 350 GPa and temperature range of from 300 to 500 K. This proton transfer i…
We study the effect of temperature up to 1000K on the structure of dense molecular para-hydrogen and ortho-deuterium, using the path-integral Monte Carlo method. We find a structural phase transition from orientationally disordered hexagonal close packed (hcp) to an orthorhombic structure of Cmca symmetry before melting. The transition is basically induced by thermal fluctuations, but quantum fluctuations of protons (deuterons) are important in determining the transition temperature through effectively hardening the intermolecular interaction. We estimate the phase line between hcp and Cmca ph…

Inelastic scattering experiments are key methods for mapping the full dispersion of fundamental excitations of solids in the ground as well as non-equilibrium states. A quantitative analysis of inelastic scattering in terms of phonon excitations requires identifying the role of multi-phonon processes. Here, we develop an efficient first-principles methodology for calculating the all-phonon quantum mechanical structure factor of solids. We demonstrate our method by obtaining excellent agreement between measurements and calculations of the diffuse scattering patterns of black phosphorus, showing…
The models of permanent lattice defect formation in rare-gas solids are discussed with a focus on a point defect formation in solid Ar. The processes of large-scale atomic displacements induced by electronic excitations were studied using the selective vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy method. The coexistence of intrinsic excitonic mechanism and extrinsic Rydberg state induced excited-state mechanism of Frenkel defect formation was found.
We consider several aspects of high-order harmonic generation in solids: the effects of elastic and inelastic scattering; varying pulse characteristics; and inclusion of material-specific parameters through a realistic band structure. We reproduce many observed characteristics of high harmonic generation experiments in solids including the formation of only odd harmonics in inversion-symmetric materials, and the nonlinear formation of high harmonics with increasing field. We find that the harmonic spectra are fairly robust against elastic and inelastic scattering. Furthermore, we find that the…
We present a novel derivation of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) which yields an expression for the RIXS cross section in terms of emission pathways between intermediate and final many-body states. Thereby electron-hole interactions are accounted for, as obtained from full diagonalization of the Bethe-Salpeter equation within an all-electron first-principles framework. We demonstrate our approach with the emission spectra of the fluorine K edge in LiF, and provide an in-depth analysis of the pathways that determine the spectral shape. Excitoninc effects are shown to play a crucial r…
The anharmonic phenomena in Zirconium Hydrides and Deuterides, including ε-ZrH2, γ-ZrH, and γ-ZrD, have been investigated from aspects of inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and lattice dynamics calculations within the framework of density functional theory (DFT). The observed multiple sharp peaks below harmonic multi-phonon bands in the experimental spectra of all three materials did not show up in the simulated INS spectra based on the harmonic approximation, indicating the existence of strong anharmonicity in those materials and the necessity of further explanations. We present a detailed st…
We show that the isotope effect leads to a completely different spectroscopic signal in hydrogen-deuterium mixtures, compared to pure elements that have the same crystal structure. This is particularly true for molecular vibrations, which are the main source of information about the structure of high-pressure hydrogen. Mass disorder breaks translational symmetry, meaning that vibrations are localized almost to single molecules, and are not zone-center phonons. In mixtures, each observable IR peak corresponds to a collection of many such molecular vibrations, which have a distribution of freque…
This paper presents a calculation of the neutron cross-sections in solid materials (used in practical neutron sources) with a large coherent scattering contribution. In particular, the dynamic structure function S(Q, $ω$) of polycrystalline ortho-D$_2$ is evaluated using a Monte-Carlo calculation that performs an average over scattering angles relative to crystal axes in random orientations. This method uses an analytical dispersion function with force constants derived from neutron scattering data of single crystal D$_2$ in the framework of an axially symmetric force tensor. The resulting two…
Cu2Se and Cu2S are excellent model systems of superionic conductors with large diffusion coefficients that have been reported to exhibit different solid-liquid-like Cu-ion diffusion. In this paper, we clarify the atomic dynamics of these compounds with temperature-dependent ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments. Using the dynamical structure factor and Van-Hove correlation function, we interrogate the jump-time, hopping length distribution and associated diffusion coefficients. In cubic-Cu2Se at 500 K, we find solid-like diffusion wi…
A simple procedure is developed to simultaneously eliminate multiple scattering contributions from two reflection electron energy loss spectra (REELS) measured at different energies or for different experimental geometrical configurations. The procedure provides the differential inverse inelastic mean free path (DIIMFP) and the differential surface excitation probability (DSEP). The only required input parameters are the differential cross section for elastic scattering and a reasonable estimate for the inelastic mean free path (IMFP). No prior information on surface excitations is required fo…
Electron dynamics in the bulk and at the surface of solid materials are well known to play a key role in a variety of physical and chemical phenomena. In this article we describe the main aspects of the interaction of low-energy electrons with solids, and report extensive calculations of inelastic lifetimes of both low-energy electrons in bulk materials and image-potential states at metal surfaces. New calculations of inelastic lifetimes in a homogeneous electron gas are presented, by using various well-known representations of the electronic response of the medium. Band-structure calculations…
Hydrogen is an efficient energy carrier that can be produced from renewable sources, enabling the transition towards CO2-free energy. Hydrogen can be stored for a long period in the solid-state, with suitable alloys. Ti-rich TiFe0.90 compound exhibits a mild activation process for the first hydrogenation, and Ti(Fe,Mn)0.90 substituted alloys can lead to the fine tuning of equilibrium pressure as a function of the final application. In this study, the crystal structure of TiFe(0.90-x)Mnx alloys (x = 0, 0.05 and 0.10) and their deuterides has been determined by in-situ neutron diffraction, while…
We present results of ab initio theoretical investigations of the excitation spectra of correlated electrons in metals (Al, K, and Li) and their interplay with inelastic scattering experiments. We resolve various anomalies contained in the data, which were originally viewed as signatures of strong dynamical electronic correlations; we show that, instead, the anomalies are due to band-structure effects. The underlying theoretical framework in our density-response calculations is time-dependent density-functional theory; with this scheme we discuss the lifetime of the K plasmon, and the dynamica…
Inelastic neutron scattering was performed for an iron-based superconductor LaFeAsO0.9D0.1, where most of D (deuterium) replaces oxygen, while a tiny amount goes into interstitial sites. By first-principle calculation, we characterize the interstitial sites for D (and for H slightly mixed) with four equivalent potential minima. Below the superconducting transition temperature Tc = 26 K,new excitations emerge in the range 5-15 meV, while they are absent in the reference system LaFeAsO0.9F0.1. The strong excitations at 14.5 meV and 11.1 meV broaden rapidly around 15 K and 20 K, respectively, whe…
A procedure is developed to rigorously decompose experimental loss spectra of medium-energy electrons reflected from solid surfaces into contributions due to surface and volume electronic excitations. This can be achieved by analysis of two spectra acquired under different experimental conditions, e.g. measured at two different energies and/or geometrical configurations. The input parameters of this procedure comprise the elastic scattering cross section and the inelastic mean free path for volume scattering. The (normalized) differential inelastic mean free path as well as the differential su…
We report one algorithm for simulating oxygen $K$-edge RIXS for weakly correlated systems, using maximally localized Wannier functions as the basis set. The $N$-electron wavefunction is formulated using the single Slater determinant, and the many-body effect is treated explicitly at the dipole matrix element level. The simulated result of oxygen $K$-edge RIXS for solid state Li$_2$CO$_3$ matches well with the experimental data. Besides being efficient and reasonably accurate, this algorithm also shows potential to extent to more complex RIXS problems.
The improvement of the number of extractable ultracold neutrons (UCNs) from converters based on solid deuterium (sD$_2$) crystals requires a good understanding of UCN transport and how the crystal's morphology influences its transparency to UCNs. Measurements of the UCN transmission through cryogenic liquids and solids of interest, such as hydrogen (H$_2$) and deuterium (D$_2$), require sample containers with thin, highly polished and optically transparent windows and a well defined sample thickness. One of the most difficult sealing problems is that of light gases like hydrogen and helium at …
We develop a multidimensional coupled channel method suitable for studying the interplay of bound state resonance and phonon assisted scattering of inert gas atoms from solid surfaces in one, two and three dimensions. This enables us to get insight into the features that depend on the dimensionality of inelastic resonant processes typically encountered in low energy He atom scattering from surfaces, in general, and to elaborate on the observability of recently conjectured near threshold resonances in scattering from Einstein phonons, in particular.
Phonon transmission across an interface between dissimilar crystalline solids is calculated using molecular dynamics simulations with interatomic force constants obtained from first principles. The results reveal that although inelastic phonon-transmission right at the geometrical interface can become far greater than the elastic one, its contribution to thermal boundary conductance (TBC) is severely limited by the transition regions, where local phonon states at the interface recover the bulk state over a finite thickness. This suggests TBC can be increased by enhancing phonon equilibration i…
We introduce turboEELS, an implementation of the Liouville-Lanczos approach to linearized time-dependent density-functional theory, designed to simulate electron energy loss and inelastic X-ray scattering spectra in periodic solids. turboEELS is open-source software distributed under the terms of the GPL as a component of Quantum ESPRESSO. As with other components, turboEELS is optimized to run on a variety of different platforms, from laptops to massively parallel architectures, using native mathematical libraries (LAPACK and FFTW) and a hierarchy of custom parallelization layers built on top…
Anomalous thermal expansion behaviour of several open frame-work compounds has been extensively investigated using the techniques of inelastic neutron scattering and lattice dynamics. These compounds involve increasing level of structural complexity and flexibility, which leads to increased values of thermal expansion coefficients approaching colossal values. In several compounds, neutron inelastic scattering experiments have produced quantitative estimates of the anharmonicity of phonons over a range of low energies, and thereby explained the observed thermal expansion quantitatively. The anh…
Ultrafast optical pulses are an increasingly important tool for controlling quantum materials and triggering novel photo-induced phase transitions. Understanding these dynamic phenomena requires a probe sensitive to spin, charge, and orbital degrees of freedom. Time-resolved resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (trRIXS) is an emerging spectroscopic method, which responds to this need by providing unprecedented access to the finite-momentum fluctuation spectrum of photoexcited solids. In this Perspective, we briefly review state-of-the-art trRIXS experiments on condensed matter systems, as well …
A new experimental method of determination of equilibrium isotopic properties of substances based on Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS) is proposed. We present mathematical formalism allowing calculation of beta-factor of single-element solids based on INS-derived Phonon Density of States (PDOS). PDOS data for nanodiamonds of widely different sizes and of macroscopic diamond were determined from Inelastic Neutron Scattering experiment. This allowed determination of heat capacities and, for the first time, \b{eta}-factors for the diamond nanoparticles. We demonstrate considerable size-dependent…
The GALAXIES beamline at the SOLEIL synchrotron is dedicated to inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) and photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) in the 2.3-12 keV hard x-ray range. These two techniques offer powerful, complementary methods of characterization of materials with bulk sensitivity, chemical and orbital selectivity, resonant enhancement and high resolving power. After a description of the beamline components and endstations, we address the beamline performances through a selection of recent works both in the solid and gas phases and using either IXS or HAXPES approaches. Prospects for stud…
Inelastic electron scattering by the adsorbate covered Pt(100) single crystal surface is studied by Disappearance Potential Spectroscopy and density of states (DOS) calculations. Two peculiar channels of elastic electron consumption are highlighted, both related to the substrate core level excitation coupled separately with two particular electron transitions. The first channel affects the adsorbed layer and enables to reveal the valence state structure of the adsorbed species as well as the substrate DOS. The second one includes the multiple plasmon oscillations. The proposed mechanism of ele…
We present experimental data on ultracold neutron (UCN) production in solid oxygen from 5 K to 50 K. The experiment used 3 cells of different dimensions in order to study the excess UCN elastic scattering in s-O$_2$ due to source density non-uniformities. We present a combined $χ^2$ analysis with the aid of Monte-Carlo simulations which contain the detailed physics of UCN transport as well as cold neutron attenuation. The results validate the UCN production and upscattering cross-sections extracted from the dynamic structure function derived from inelastic neutron scattering, and illustrate th…
