We report first principles density functional perturbation theory calculations and inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the phonon density of states, dispersion relations and electromechanical response of PbTiO3, BaTiO3 and SrTiO3. The phonon density-of-states of the quantum paraelectric SrTiO3 is found to be fundamentally distinct from that of ferroelectric PbTiO3 and BaTiO3 with a large 70-90 meV phonon band-gap. The phonon dispersion and electromechanical response of PbTiO3 reveal giant anisotropies. The interplay of covalent bonding and ferroelectricity, strongly modulates the electromechanical response and give rise to spectacular signatures in the phonon spectra. The computed charge densities have been used to study the bonding in these perovskites. Distinct bonding characteristics in the ferroelectric and paraelectric phases give rise to spectacular vibrational signatures. While a large phonon band-gap in ATiO3 perovskites seems a characteristic of quantum paraelectrics, anisotropy of the phonon spectra correlates well with ferroelectric strength. These correlations between the phonon spectra and ferroelectricity, can guide future efforts at custom designing still more effective piezoelectrics for applications. These results suggest that vibrational spectroscopy can help design novel materials.
We performed first principles calculations for epitaxially strained orthorhombic CaTiO$_3$. The computational results reveal the existence of a metastable ferroelectric phase at compressive strain with unexpected in-plane polarization. Symmetry analysis indicates that two distortion modes at the X point combine to induce the polarization, leading to characterization as a hybrid improper ferroelectric. Our work demonstrates a mechanism for improper ferroelectricity in simple perovskites without the need for symmetry lowering by layering or cation ordering.
We report studies of ferroelectricity in ultra-thin perovskite films with realistic electrodes. The results reveal stable ferroelectric states in thin films less than 10 Åthick with polarization normal to the surface. Under short-circuit boundary conditions, the screening effect of realistic electrodes and the influence of real metal/oxide interfaces on thin film polarization are investigated. Our studies indicate that metallic screening from the electrodes is affected by the difference in work functions at oxide surfaces. We demonstrate this effect in ferroelectric PbTiO$_3$ and BaTiO$_3$ fil…
Two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectricity has attracted extensive attention since its discovery in the monolayers of van der Waals materials. Here we show that 2D ferroelectricity induced by octahedral rotation distortion is widely present in the perovskite bilayer system through first-principles calculations. The perovskite tolerance factor plays a crucial role in the lattice dynamics and ground-state structure of the perovskite monolayers and bilayers, thus providing an important indicator for screening this hybrid improper ferroelectricity. Generally, the ferroelectric switching via an orthorho…
The structure of ABO3 perovskites is dominated by two types of unstable modes, namely, the oxygen octahedral rotation (AFD) and ferroelectric (FE) mode. It is generally believed that such AFD and FE modes tend to compete and suppress each other. Here we use first-principles methods to show that a dual nature of the AFD-FE coupling, which turns from competitive to cooperative as the AFD mode strengthens, occurs in numerous perovskite oxides. We provide a unified model of such a dual interaction by introducing novel high-order coupling terms, and explain the atomistic origin of the resulting new…
There are two silver perovskite oxides: AgNbO3 and AgTaO3. AgNbO3 has a noncentrosymmetric group of Pmc21 at room temperature with a ferri-electric ordering of polarization. Such a ferri-electric state with small polarization can be changed into a ferroelectric state with very large polarization by a high electric field or by a chemical modification. The induced ferroelectric phase shows promising electromechanical response for applications in piezoelectric devices. In contrast, AgTaO3 is a quantum paraelectric, but ferroelectricity also can be induced through chemical substitution. The findin…
Using first principles calculations we show that several alkali lead halides potentially present collective ferroelectric polarization. This should occur at least at the nanoscale; it could be detected macroscopically provided it is not concealed by lattice vibrations in the temperature range of stability of the cubic perovskite phase. For potassium lead halides and for alkali lead fluorides, remarkably, the ferroelectric behavior turns hyper-ferroelectric, suggesting a more robust ferroelectric polarization in spite of depolarization potentials induced by charge accumulation on surfaces or in…
By means of magnetic, specific heat and pyroelectric measurements, we report on magnetic ferroelectricity in the quadruple perovskite \namno, characterized by a canted antiferromagnetic (AFM) CE structure. Surprisingly, ferroelectricity is concomitant to a dramatic broadening of the magnetic hysteresis loop, well below the AFM ordering temperature. This unconventional behavior shows that the formation of ferroelectric domains is induced by the symmetric exchange interaction in the local scale, e.g. at magnetic domain boundaries or defects. The value of electric polarization, $P = 0.027 μ$C cm$…
This article reviews the polarizability model and its applications to ferroelectric perovskite oxides. The motivation for the introduction of the model is discussed and nonlinear oxygen ion polarizability effects and their lattice dynamical implementation outlined. While a large part of this work is dedicated to results obtained within the self-consistent-phonon approximation (SPA), also nonlinear solutions of the model are handled which are of interest to the physics of relaxor ferroelectrics, domain wall motions, incommensurate phase transitions. The main emphasis is to compare the results o…
We use a combination of symmetry arguments and first-principles calculations to explore the connection between structural distortions and ferroelectricity in the perovskite family of materials. We explain the role of octahedral rotations in suppressing ferroelectricity in these materials and show that, as the tolerance factor decreases, rotations alone cannot fully suppress ferroelectricity. Our results show that it is cation displacements (`hidden' in Glazer notation) that accompany the rotations, rather than the rotations themselves, that play the decisive role in suppressing ferroelectricit…
We used first-principles calculations to investigate the existence and origin of the ferroelectric in- stability in the ABF3 fluoro-perovskites. We find that many fluoro-perovskites have a ferroelectric instability in their high symmetry cubic structure, which is of similar amplitude to that commonly found in oxide perovskites. In contrast to the oxides, however, the fluorides have nominal Born effective charges, indicating a different mechanism for the instability. We show that the instability originates from ionic size effects, and is therefore in most cases largely insensitive to pressure a…
Increasing demands for electric field-tunable electric, magnetic, and orbital (EMO) materials has renewed interests in ferroelectricity and its coupling to EMO properties in complex perovskite oxides. The historic design strategy to achieve a spontaneous polarization involves the incorporation of second-order Jahn-Teller (SOJT) active cations. The challenge, however, is that this mechanism is limited to specific chemistries and the polar distortions that arise are largely decoupled from EMO properties, limiting their use as field-tunable multifunctional technology materials. Here we report the…
We present a first-principles investigation of ferroelectricity in layered perovskite oxide La2Ti2O7 (LTO), one of the compounds with highest Curie temperature known (1770 K). Our calculations reveal that LTO's ferroelectric transition results from the condensation of two soft modes that have the same symmetry and are strongly coupled anharmonically. Further, the leading instability mode essentially consists of rotations of the oxygen octahedra that are the basic building block of the perovskite structure; remarkably, because of the particular topology of the lattice, such O6 rotations give ra…
In ABO3 perovskites, oxygen octahedron rotations are common structural distortions that can promote large ferroelectricity in BiFeO3 with an R3c structure [1], but suppress ferroelectricity in CaTiO3 with a Pbnm symmetry [2]. For many CaTiO3-like perovskites, the BiFeO3 structure is a metastable phase. Here, we report the stabilization of the highly-polar BiFeO3-like phase of CaTiO3 in a BaTiO3/CaTiO3 superlattice grown on a SrTiO3 substrate. The stabilization is realized by a reconstruction of oxygen octahedron rotations at the interface from the pattern of nonpolar bulk CaTiO3 to a different…
Doping ferroelectrics with carriers is often detrimental to polarization. This makes the design and discovery of metals that undergo a ferroelectric-like transition challenging. In this letter, we show from first principles that the oxygen octahedral rotations in perovskites are often enhanced by electron doping, and this can be used as a means to strengthen the structural polarization in certain hybrid-improper ferroelectrics -- compounds in which the polarization is not stabilized by the long range Coulomb interactions but is instead induced by a trilinear coupling to octahedral rotations. W…
Ferroelectricity is observed in orthorhombic $HoMnO_3$ and $YMnO_3$ at the magnetic lock-in transitions into an E-type structure or an incommensurate phase with a temperature independent wave vector, respectively. In $HoMnO_3$ the ferroelectric polarization strongly depends on the external magnetic field indicating the involvement of the rare earth moment order in this compound. The results are discussed within the framework of recent theoretical models, in particular the double exchange driven polar displacements predicted for E-type magnetic structures.
We show that the symmetry of the spin zigzag chain E phase of the orthorhombic perovskite manganites and nickelates allows for the existence of a finite ferroelectric polarization. The proposed microscopic mechanism is independent of spin-orbit coupling. We predict that the polarization induced by the E-type magnetic order can potentially be enhanced by up to two orders of magnitude with respect to that in the spiral magnetic phases of TbMnO3 and similar multiferroic compounds.
Advances in first-principles computational approaches have, over the past fifteen years, made possible the investigation of physical properties of ferroelectric systems. In particular, such approaches have led to a microscopic understanding of the occurrence of ferroelectricity in perovskite oxides at ambient pressure. In this paper, we report ab-initio studies on the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the ferroelectricity in perovskites and related materials. We found that, unlike commonly believed, these materials exhibit ferroelectricity at high enough pressure. We also explained in details …
Crystallography and dielectric properties in Dion-Jacobson layered perovskites, CsNdNb$_2$O$_7$ and RbNdNb$_2$O$_7$, have been examined in dense polycrystalline samples, and polarization hysteresis loops that substantiate ferroelectricity have been observed at room temperature. The theoretical mechanism for the spontaneous polarization, "hybrid improper ferroelectric mechanism,'' induced by a combination of two types of non-polar octahedral rotations, is confirmed in these two phases. Our samples show remanent polarizations of 2-3 $μ$C/cm$^2$, which are much larger than those obtained in polyc…
The central goal of crystal engineering is to develop precise control over material function \emph{via} rational design of structure. A particularly successful realisation of this paradigm is the example of hybrid improper ferroelectricity in layered perovskite materials, where cation vacancies and cooperative octahedral tilts combine to break inversion symmetry. However, in the more chemically diverse and technologically relevant family of inorganic ABX$_3$ perovskites, symmetry conspires to render hybrid coupling to polar distortions impossible. In this study, we use group-theoretical analys…
Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) are introducing new directions in the 2D materials landscape. The coexistence of ferroelectricity and spin-orbit interactions play a key role in their optoelectronic properties. We perform a detailed study on a recently synthesized ferroelectric 2D-HOIP, (AMP)PbI$_4$ (AMP = 4-aminomethyl-piperidinium). The calculated polarization and Rashba parameter are in excellent agreement with experimental values. We report a striking new effect, i.e., an extraordinarily large Rashba anisotropy that is tunable by ferroelectric polarization:…
We use density functional theory to investigate the possibility of polar and multiferroic states in free-standing, perovskite-based nanodots at their limit of miniaturization: single unit cell with termination to allow centrosymmetry. We consider both A-O and B-O2 terminations for three families of nanodots: i) A=Ba with B=Ti, Zr, and Hf; ii) A=Ca and Sr with B=Ti; and iii) A = Na and K with B=Nb. We find all A-O terminated dots to be non-polar and to exhibit cubic symmetry, regardless of the presence of ferroelectricity in the bulk. These dots all carry a net magnetic moment, except Ca8TiO6. …
High-temperature electronic materials are in constant demand as the required operational range for various industries increases. Here we design $(A,A^\prime)B_2$O$_6$ perovskite oxides with [111] ``rock salt" $A$-site cation order and predict them to be potential high-temperature piezoelectric materials. By selecting bulk perovskites which have a tendency towards only out-of-phase $B$O$_6$ rotations, we avoid possible staggered ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transitions while also retaining non-centrosymmetric crystal structures necessary for ferro- and piezoelectricity. Using density fun…
Multiferroics with coupling between ferroelectricity and magnetism have been pursued for decades. However, their magnetoelectric performances remain limited due to the common trade-off between ferroelectricity and magnetism. Here, a family of nitride perovskites is proposed as multiferroics with prominent physical properties and nontrivial mechanisms. Taking GdWN$_3$ as a prototype, our first-principles calculations found that its perovskite phases own large polarizations (e.g. $111.3$ $μ$C/cm$^2$ for the $R3c$ phase) and a magnetic moment $7$ $μ_{\rm B}$/Gd$^{3+}$. More interestingly, its fer…
First principles calculations are used to investigate the effects of epitaxial strain on the structure of the perovskite oxide CaTiO$_3$, with particular focus on the stabilization of a ferroelectric phase related to a polar instability hidden in the orthorhombic equilibrium bulk $Pbnm$ structure but found in previous first-principles studies of the ideal cubic perovskite high-symmetry reference structure. At 1.5% strain, we find an epitaxial orientation transition between the $ab$-$ePbnm$ phase, favored for compressive strains, and the $c$-$ePbnm$ phase. For larger tensile strains, a polar in…
We use first-principles calculations based on density functional theory to investigate the interplay between oxygen vacancies, A-site cation size / tolerance factor, epitaxial strain, ferroelectricity and magnetism in the perovskite manganite series, AMnO3 (A=Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+). We find that, as expected, increasing the volume through either chemical pressure or tensile strain generally lowers the formation energy of neutral oxygen vacancies consistent with their established tendency to expand the lattice. Increased volume also favors polar distortions, both because competing rotations of the o…
We present results of local spin density approximation (LSDA) pseudopotential calculations for the perovskite structure oxide, bismuth manganite (BiMnO3). The origin of the differences between bismuth manganite and other perovskite manganites is determined by first calculating total energies and band structures of the high symmetry cubic phase, then sequentially lowering the magnetic and structural symmetry. Our results indicate that covalent bonding between bismuth cations and oxygen anions stabilizes different magnetic and structural phases compared with the rare earth manganites. This is co…
Using first-principles density functional theory we predict a ferroelectric ground state -- driven by off-centering of the magnetic Mn$^{4+}$ ion -- in perovskite-structure BaMnO$_3$. Our finding is surprising, since the competition between energy-lowering covalent bond formation, and energy-raising Coulombic repulsions usually only favors off-centering on the perovskite $B$-site for non-magnetic $d^0$ ions. We explain this tendency for ferroelectric off-centering by analyzing the changes in electronic structure between the centrosymmetric and polar states, and by calculating the Born effectiv…
We propose to insert TiO layers to perovskite ATiO$_{3}$ to form a superlattice and use first-principles calculations to investigate its basic properties. Our computational analysis shows that the structure, which consists of repeated ATiO_{3} and TiO layers, has strong anisotropic conductivity. The structure immediately suggests a possible control of its conductivity by ion displacements related to its intrinsic ferroelectricity. In addition, we have obtained the structural information of its low-energy phases with the aid of phonon calculation and examined their evolution with epitaxial stra…
Ferroic transition metal oxides, which exhibit spontaneous elastic, electrical, magnetic or toroidal order, exhibit functional properties that find use in ultrastable solid-state memories to sensors and medical imaging technologies. To realize multifunctional behavior, where one order parameter can be coupled to the conjugate field of another order parameter, however, requires a common microscopic origin for the long-range order. Here, we formulate a complete theory for a novel form of ferroelectricity, whereby a spontaneous and switchable polarization emerges from the destruction of an antife…
Methylammonium lead iodide, as related organometal halide perovskites, emerged recently as a particularly attractive material for photovoltaic applications. The origin of its appealing properties is sometimes assigned to its potential ferroelectric character, which remains however a topic of intense debate. Here, we rationalize from first-principles calculations how the spatial arrangement of methylammonium polar molecules is progressively constrained by the subtle interplay between their tendency to bond with the inorganic framework and the appearance of iodine octahedra rotations inherent to…
While nature provides a plethora of perovskite materials, only a few exhibits large ferroelectricity and possibly multiferroicity. The majority of perovskite materials have the non-polar CaTiO$_3$(CTO)structure, limiting the scope of their applications. Based on effective Hamiltonian model as well as first-principles calculations, we propose a general thin-film design method to stabilize the functional BiFeO$_3$(BFO)-type structure, which is a common metastable structure in widespread CaTiO$_3$-type perovskite oxides. It is found that the improper antiferroelectricity in CTO-type perovskite an…
Phase evolution in (Ag1-xLix)NbO3 (ALN) solid solution was investigated by X-ray diffraction technique, dielectric and polarization measurements. It is shown that small substitution of Ag with Li gives rise to an orthorhombic-rhombohedral structural transformation in ABO3-perovskite silver niobate at room temperature. Structural refinements indicate that both A- and B-site displacements contribute to the spontaneous polarization of the ferroelectric phase with symmetry R3c. Increasing Li-concentration enhances the ferroelectric rhombohedral distortion, resulting in the increase of the para-fer…
We report the relationship between epitaxial strain and the crystallographic orientation of the in-phase rotation axis and A-site displacements in Pbnm-type perovskite films. Synchrotron diffraction measurements of EuFeO3 films under strain states ranging from 2% compressive to 0.9% tensile on cubic or rhombohedral substrates exhibit a combination of a-a+c- and a+a-c- rotational patterns. We compare the EuFeO3 behavior with previously reported experimental and theoretical work on strained Pbnm-type films on non-orthorhombic substrates, as well as additional measurements from LaGaO3, LaFeO3, an…
Perovskite oxides attract increasing attention due to their broad potential in many applications. Understanding their surfaces is challenging, though, because the ternary composition of the bulk allows for multiple stable surface terminations. We demonstrate a simple procedure for preparing the bulk-terminated (001) surface of SrTiO3, a prototypical cubic perovskite. Controlled application of strain on a SrTiO3 single crystal results in a flat cleavage with micrometer-size domains of SrO and TiO2. Distribution of these two terminations is dictated by ferroelectric domains induced by strain dur…
First-principles calculations are presented for the layered perovskite Ca$_3$Mn$_2$O$_7$. The results reveal a rich set of coupled structural, magnetic and polar domains in which oxygen octahedron rotations induce ferroelectricity, magnetoelectricity and weak-ferromagnetism. The key point is that the rotation distortion is a combination of two non-polar modes with different symmetries. We use the term "hybrid" improper ferroelectricity to describe this phenomenon and discuss how control over magnetism is achieved through these functional antiferrodistortive octahedron rotations.
The low thermal conductivity of piezoelectric perovskites is a challenge for high power transducer applications. We report first principles calculations of the thermal conductivity of ferroelectric PbTiO$_3$ and the cubic nearly ferroelectric perovskite KTaO$_3$. The calculated thermal conductivity of PbTiO$_3$ is much lower than that of KTaO$_3$ in accord with experiment. Analysis of the results shows that the reason for the low thermal conductivity of PbTiO$_3$ is the presence of low frequency optical phonons associated with the polar modes. These are less dispersive in PbTiO$_3$, leading to…
The alkaline earth binary oxides adopt a simple rocksalt structure and form an important family of compounds because of their large presence in the earth's mantle and their potential use in microelectronic devices. In comparison to the class of multifunctional ferroelectric perovskite oxides, however, their practical applications remain limited and the emergence of ferroelectricity and related functional properties in simple binary oxides seems so unlikely that it was never previously considered. Here, we show using first-principles density functional calculations that ferroelectricity can be …
Here, we report the existence of large remnant polarization and dielectric constant in PbTiO3 buffered polycrystalline (BiFeO_3)_{1-x} (PbTiO_3)_x thin films of composition x = 0.25, 0.30 and 0.35 around the morphotropic phase boundary. The films were deposited by chemical solution deposition on platinized silicon substrates. Films reveal a perovskite structure with a tendency to retain rhombohedral structure even at higher PbTiO_3 content than that reported in bulk. We observe very large remnant polarization, ~75 microC/cm^2, and high dielectric constant, ~2400 at 1 kHz for x = 0.3, which lie…
The electronic structure of SrBi2Ta2O9 is investigated from first-principles, within the local density approximation, using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (LAPW) method. The results show that, besides the large Ta(5d)-O(2p) hybridization which is a common feature of the ferroelectric perovskites, there is an important hybridization between bismuth and oxygen states. The underlying static potential for the ferroelectric distortion and the primary source for ferroelectricity is investigated by a lattice-dynamics study using the Frozen Phonon approach.
We theoretically study origins of the ferroelectricity in the multiferroic phases of the rare-earth (R) Mn perovskites, RMnO3, by constructing a realistic spin model including the spin-phonon coupling, which reproduces the entire experimental phase diagram in the plane of temperature and Mn-O-Mn bond angle for the first time. Surprisingly we reveal a significant contribution of the symmetric (S.S)-type magnetostriction to the ferroelectricity even in a spin-spiral-based multiferroic phase, which can be larger than the usually expected antisymmetric (SxS)-type contribution. This explains well t…
We performed a first-principles study of the structural, vibrational, electronic and magnetic properties of NaMnF3 under applied isotropic pressure. We found that NaMnF3 undergoes a reconstructive phase transition at 8 GPa from the Pnma distorted perovskite structure toward the Cmcm post-perovskite structure. This is confirmed by a sudden change of the Mn-F-Mn bondings where the crystal goes from corner shared octahedra in the Pnma phase to edge shared octahedra in the Cmcm phase. The magnetic ordering also changes from a G-type antiferromagnetic ordering in the Pnma phase to a C-type antiferr…
Calcium silicate perovskite (CaSiO$_3$) is one of the major mineral components of the lower mantle, but has been the subject of relatively little work compared to the more abundant Mg-based materials. One of the major problems related to CaSiO$_3$ that is still the subject of research is its crystal structure under lower mantle conditions - a cubic Pm$\bar{3}$m structure is accepted in general, but some have suggested that lower-symmetry structures may be relevant. In this paper, we use a fully first-principles vibrational self-consistent field method to perform high accuracy anharmonic vibrat…
Recently, the perovskite BiCoO$_3$ has been shown experimentally to be isostructural with PbTiO$_3$, while simultaneously the $d^6$ Co$^{3+}$ ion has a high spin ground state with $C$-type antiferromagnetic ordering. Using hybrid density functional calculations, we investigate the atomic, electronic and magnetic structure of BiCoO$_3$ to elucidate the origin of the multiferroic state. To begin with, we perform a qualitative trend sudy of the role of $d$ electrons in affecting the tendency for perovskite materials to exhibit a ferroelectric distortion; this work initially explores a qualitative…
Inhomogeneous strain may develop in hybrid organic metal-halide perovskite thin films due to thermal expansion mismatch with a fabrication substrate, polycrystallinity or even light soaking. Measuring these spatially varying strains is difficult but of prime importance for understanding the effects on carrier mobility, non-radiative recombination, degradation and other optoelectronic properties. Local strain can be mapped using the shifts in vibrational frequencies using Raman or infrared microscopy. We use density functional theory to investigate the effect of uniaxial strain on the vibration…
By angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and polarization-dependent infrared reflectivity measurements the electronic and vibrational properties of low-dimensional perovskites Sr$_{1-y}$La$_y$NbO$_{3.5-x}$ were studied along different crystal directions. The electronic behavior strongly depends on the oxygen and La content, including quasi-one-dimensional metallic and ferroelectric insulating behavior. An extremely small energy gap at the Fermi level is found for SrNbO$_{3.41}$ and SrNbO$_{3.45}$ along the conducting direction at low temperature, suggestive for a Peierls-type instability. …
We show the first-principles evidence of a hitherto unreported type of ferroelectricity with ultra-long ion-displacement in sodium and potassium hydroxides. Even a small amount of proton vacancies can completely change the mode of proton-transfer from intra-unitcell to trans-unitcell, giving rise to multiferroic soliton with mobile magnetism and a tremendous polarization that can be orders of magnitude higher compared with most perovskite ferroelectrics. Their vertical polarizations of thin-film are robust against depolarizing field, rendering various designs of 2D ferroelectric field-transist…
FAPbI3, as a typical hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite, has attracted considerable interest due to its band gap suitable for visible light absorption and good thermal stability. A barrier to the use of FAPbI3 in commercial, stable devices is its unwanted black-to-yellow (non-perovskite to perovskite, commonly known as delta-to-alpha) phase transition at around 300 K. The intrinsic mechanisms of such phase transition are far from clear, being the detailed structural description for the alpha-phase still missing. By combined Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, lattice dynamics analys…
Several defect configurations including oxygen vacancies have been investigated as possible origins of the reported room-temperature ferroelectricity of strontium titanate (STO) thin films [Appl. Phys. Letts. 91, 042908 (2007)]. First-principles calculations revealed that the Sr-O-O vacancy complexes create deep localized states in the band gap of SrTiO3 without affecting its insulating property. These results are in agreement with electronic structural changes determined from optical transmission and X-ray absorption measurements. This work opens the way to exploiting oxygen vacancies and the…
Perovskite ABO$_3$ oxides display an amazing variety of phenomena that can be altered by subtle changes in the chemistry and internal structure, making them a favorite class of materials to explore the rational design of novel properties. Here we highlight a recent advance in which rotations of the BO$_6$ octahedra give rise to a novel form of ferroelectricity -- hybrid improper ferroelectricity. Octahedral rotations also strongly influence other structural, magnetic, orbital, and electronic degrees of freedom in perovskites and related materials. Octahedral rotation-driven ferroelectricity co…
