First-principles calculations are presented for the layered perovskite Ca$_3$Mn$_2$O$_7$. The results reveal a rich set of coupled structural, magnetic and polar domains in which oxygen octahedron rotations induce ferroelectricity, magnetoelectricity and weak-ferromagnetism. The key point is that the rotation distortion is a combination of two non-polar modes with different symmetries. We use the term "hybrid" improper ferroelectricity to describe this phenomenon and discuss how control over magnetism is achieved through these functional antiferrodistortive octahedron rotations.
We performed first principles calculations for epitaxially strained orthorhombic CaTiO$_3$. The computational results reveal the existence of a metastable ferroelectric phase at compressive strain with unexpected in-plane polarization. Symmetry analysis indicates that two distortion modes at the X point combine to induce the polarization, leading to characterization as a hybrid improper ferroelectric. Our work demonstrates a mechanism for improper ferroelectricity in simple perovskites without the need for symmetry lowering by layering or cation ordering.

Using first-principles calculations, we study theoretically the stable 2H hexagonal structure of BaMnO3. We show that from the stable high temperature P63/mmc structure, the compound should exhibit an improper ferroelectric structural phase transition to a P63cm ground state. Combined with its antiferromagnetic properties, 2H-BaMnO3 is therefore expected to be multiferroic at low temperature. The phase transition mechanism in BaMnO3 appears similar to what was reported in YMnO3 in spite of totally different atomic arrangement, cation sizes and Mn valence state.
In this contribution to the special issue on magnetoelectrics and their applications, we focus on some single phase multiferroics theoretically predicted and/or experimentally discovered by the authors in recent years. In these materials, iron is the common core element. However, these materials are conceptually different from the mostly-studied BiFeO$_3$, since their ferroelectricity is improper. Our reviewed materials are not simply repeating one magnetoelectric mechanism, but cover multiple branches of improper ferroelectricity, including the magnetism-driven ferroelectrics, geometric ferro…
The successful theoretical prediction and experimental demonstration of hybrid improper ferroelectricity (HIF) provides a new pathway to couple octahedral rotations, ferroelectricity, and magnetism in complex materials. To enable technological applications, a HIF with a small coercive field is desirable. We successfully grow Sr3Sn2O7 single crystals, and discover that they exhibit the smallest electric coercive field at room temperature among all known HIFs. Furthermore, we demonstate that a small external stress can repeatedly erase and re-generate ferroelastic domains. In addition, using in-…

We have carried out a first-principles theoretical study of the magnetically induced polarization in orthorhombic TbMnO3, a prototypical material in which a cycloidal spin structure generates an electric polarization via the spin-orbit interaction. We compute both the electronic and the lattice-mediated contributions to the polarization and find that the latter is strongly dominant. We analyze the spin-orbit induced forces and lattice displacements from both atomic and mode-decomposition viewpoints, and show that a simple model based on nearest Mn--Mn neighbor Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction…
The central goal of crystal engineering is to develop precise control over material function \emph{via} rational design of structure. A particularly successful realisation of this paradigm is the example of hybrid improper ferroelectricity in layered perovskite materials, where cation vacancies and cooperative octahedral tilts combine to break inversion symmetry. However, in the more chemically diverse and technologically relevant family of inorganic ABX$_3$ perovskites, symmetry conspires to render hybrid coupling to polar distortions impossible. In this study, we use group-theoretical analys…
In hybrid improper ferroelectric systems, polarization arises from the onset of successive nonpolar lattice modes. In this work, measurements and modeling were performed to determine the spatial symmetries of the phases involved in the transitions to these modes. Structural and optical measurements reveal that the tilt and rotation distortions of the MnO6 or TiO6 polyhedra relative to the high symmetry phases driving ferroelectricity in the hybrid improper Ca3X2O7 system (X=Mn and Ti) condense at different temperatures. The tilt angle vanishes abruptly at T$_T$ ~ 400 K for Ca3Mn2O7 (and contin…
Standing on successful first principles predictions for new functional ferroelectric materials, a number of new ferroelectrics have been experimentally discovered. Utilizing trilinear coupling of two types of octahedron rotations, hybrid improper ferroelectricity has been theoretically predicted in ordered perovskites and the Ruddlesden-Popper compounds (Ca$_{3}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$, Ca$_{3}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$, and (Ca/Sr/Ba)$_{3}$(Sn/Zr/Ge)$_{2}$O$_{7}$). However, the ferroelectricity of these compounds has never been experimentally confirmed and even their polar nature has been under debate. Here we…
Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) are introducing new directions in the 2D materials landscape. The coexistence of ferroelectricity and spin-orbit interactions play a key role in their optoelectronic properties. We perform a detailed study on a recently synthesized ferroelectric 2D-HOIP, (AMP)PbI$_4$ (AMP = 4-aminomethyl-piperidinium). The calculated polarization and Rashba parameter are in excellent agreement with experimental values. We report a striking new effect, i.e., an extraordinarily large Rashba anisotropy that is tunable by ferroelectric polarization:…
Using first principles calculations, we study the microscopic origin of ferroelectricity (FE) induced by magnetic order in the orthorhombic HoMnO3. We obtain the largest ferroelectric polarization observed in the whole class of improper magnetic ferroelectrics to date. We find that the two proposed mechanisms for FE in multiferroics, lattice- and electronic-based, are simultaneously active in this compound: a large portion of the ferroelectric polarization arises due to quantum-mechanical effects of electron orbital polarization, in addition to the conventional polar atomic displacements. An i…
The noncollinear cycloidal magnetic order breaks the inversion symmetry in CaMn$_{7}$O$_{12}$, generating one of the largest spin-orbit driven ferroelectric polarizations measured to date. In this Letter, the microscopic origin of the polarization, including its direction, charge density redistribution, magnetic exchange interactions, and its coupling to the spin helicity, is explored via first principles calculations. The Berry phase computed polarization exhibits almost pure electronic behavior, as the Mn displacements are negligible, $\approx$~0.7~m\textrmÅ. The polarization magnitude and d…
Electronic and structural phenomena at the twin domain wall-surface junctions in the ferroelastic materials are analyzed. Carriers accumulation caused by the strain-induced band structure changes originated via the deformation potential mechanism, structural order parameter gradient, rotostriction and flexoelectric coupling is explored. Approximate analytical results show that inhomogeneous elastic strains, which exist in the vicinity of the twin walls - surface junctions due to the rotostriction coupling, decrease the local band gap via the deformation potential and flexoelectric coupling mec…
High-temperature electronic materials are in constant demand as the required operational range for various industries increases. Here we design $(A,A^\prime)B_2$O$_6$ perovskite oxides with [111] ``rock salt" $A$-site cation order and predict them to be potential high-temperature piezoelectric materials. By selecting bulk perovskites which have a tendency towards only out-of-phase $B$O$_6$ rotations, we avoid possible staggered ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transitions while also retaining non-centrosymmetric crystal structures necessary for ferro- and piezoelectricity. Using density fun…
Antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions generating from the spin-orbit coupling induce various fascinating properties, like magnetoelectric (ME) effect, weak ferromagnetism and non-trivial topological spin textures like skyrmions, in real materials. Compared to their symmetric isotropic exchange counterpart, these interactions are generally of a weaker order of strength, creating modest twisting in the spin structure which results in weak ferromagntism or weak linear ME effect. Our proposed two-sublattice model, in contrast, predicts a hitherto unobserved, charge ordered non-coll…
The number of magnetoelectric multiferroic materials reported to date is scarce, as magnetic structures that break inversion symmetry and induce an improper ferroelectric polarization typically arise through subtle competition between different magnetic interactions. The (NH4)2[FeCl5(H2O)] compound is a rare case where such improper ferroelectricity has been observed in a molecular material. We have used single crystal and powder neutron diffraction to obtain detailed solutions for the crystal and magnetic structures of (NH4)2[FeCl5(H2O)], from which we determined the mechanism of multiferroic…
There is great interest in hybrid organic-inorganic materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The compounds [C(NH$_{2}$)$_{3}$]M(HCOO)$_{3}$, where M=Cu$^{2+}$ or Cr$^{2+}$ are Jahn-Teller (JT) active ions, are MOF with perovskite topology which crystallizes in polar space group Pna2$_{1}$. In inorganic compounds, octahedral tilting and Jahn-Teller structural distortions are usually non-polar distortions. However, in this MOF cooperative interactions between the antiferro-distortive distortions of the framework and the C(NH2)$_{3}$ organic cation via hydrogen bonding breaks the invers…
Recent interests towards novel functionalities arising at domain walls of ferroic materials naturally call for a microscopic understanding. To this end, first-principles calculations have been performed in order to provide solid evidence of ferroelectricity in the twin walls of nonpolar CaTiO3 and magnetic CaMnO3. We show that ferroelectricity arises from rotation/tilting octahedral distortions --- cooperatively acting at the twin wall in both considered systems --- rather than from a proper secondary ferroelectric instability, as often believed. Our results are in excellent agreement with exp…
Crystallography and dielectric properties in Dion-Jacobson layered perovskites, CsNdNb$_2$O$_7$ and RbNdNb$_2$O$_7$, have been examined in dense polycrystalline samples, and polarization hysteresis loops that substantiate ferroelectricity have been observed at room temperature. The theoretical mechanism for the spontaneous polarization, "hybrid improper ferroelectric mechanism,'' induced by a combination of two types of non-polar octahedral rotations, is confirmed in these two phases. Our samples show remanent polarizations of 2-3 $μ$C/cm$^2$, which are much larger than those obtained in polyc…
Cu3Nb2O8 is an unusual multiferroic compound that undergoes a series of magnetic ordering at low temperatures. Concurrent development of electric polarization has been reported at TN1 ~25 K corresponding to a non-collinear helicoidal ordering (Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 137205 (2011)). But questions remain on the microscopic origin of such phenomena. In this communication, we report a detailed study of induced polar ordering in Cu3Nb2O8 by performing polarization, magnetization, dielectric constant and heat capacity measurements over a broad range of temperature and magnetic field. The dielectric c…
Ca$_3$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is an experimentally confirmed hybrid improper ferroelectric material, in which the electric polarization is induced by a combination of the coherent TiO$_6$ octahedral rotation and tilting. In this work, we investigate the tuning of ferroelectricity of Ca$_3$Ti$_2$O$_7$ using iso-valent substitutions on Ca-sites. Due to the size mismatch, larger/smaller alkaline earths prefer $A$'/$A$ sites respectively, allowing the possibility for site-selective substitutions. Without extra carriers, such site-selected iso-valent substitutions can significantly tune the TiO$_6$ octahedral …
We report the relationship between epitaxial strain and the crystallographic orientation of the in-phase rotation axis and A-site displacements in Pbnm-type perovskite films. Synchrotron diffraction measurements of EuFeO3 films under strain states ranging from 2% compressive to 0.9% tensile on cubic or rhombohedral substrates exhibit a combination of a-a+c- and a+a-c- rotational patterns. We compare the EuFeO3 behavior with previously reported experimental and theoretical work on strained Pbnm-type films on non-orthorhombic substrates, as well as additional measurements from LaGaO3, LaFeO3, an…
By means of first-principles simulations, we unambiguously show that improper ferroelectricity in magnetite in the low-temperature insulating phase is driven by charge-ordering. An accurate comparison between monoclinic ferroelectric Cc and paraelectric P2/c structures shows that the polarization arises because of "shifts" of electronic charge between octahedral Fe sites, leading to a non-centrosymmetric Fe2+/Fe3+ charge-ordered pattern. Our predicted values for polarization, in good agreement with available experimental values, are discussed in terms of point-charge dipoles located on selecte…
Using a joint approach of density functional theory and model calculations, we demonstrate that a prototypical charge ordered half-doped manganite, La$_{1/2}$Ca$_{1/2}$MnO$_3$ is multiferroic. The combination of a peculiar charge-orbital ordering and a tendency to form spin dimers breaks inversion symmetry, leads to a ferroelectric ground-state with a polarization up to several $μC/cm^2$. The presence of improper ferroelectricity does not depend on hotly debated structural details of this material: in the Zener-polaron structure we find a similar dramatic ferroelectric response with a large po…
Doping ferroelectrics with carriers is often detrimental to polarization. This makes the design and discovery of metals that undergo a ferroelectric-like transition challenging. In this letter, we show from first principles that the oxygen octahedral rotations in perovskites are often enhanced by electron doping, and this can be used as a means to strengthen the structural polarization in certain hybrid-improper ferroelectrics -- compounds in which the polarization is not stabilized by the long range Coulomb interactions but is instead induced by a trilinear coupling to octahedral rotations. W…
In this work we analyze the finite-size effects on the structural properties and on the polarization of the rhombohedral phase of HfO$_2$ subjected to a biaxial compressive strain. We show how the presence of surface charges affects the polarization, leading to a strong reduction with respect to its bulk value. This reduction can be ascribed to two mechanisms: the coupling between compressive strain and the phase-transition order parameter; the changes in the ferroelectric distortion. We give two alternative explanations of this phenomenon: from an atomistic point of view, analyzing the evolut…
We study the interplay of structural and polar distortions in hexagonal YMnO3 and short-period PbTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices by means of first-principles calculations at constrained electric displacement field D. We find that in YMnO3 the tilts of the oxygen polyhedra produce a robustly polar ground state, which persists at any choice of the electrical boundary conditions. Conversely, in PTO/STO the antiferrodistortive instabilities alone do not break inversion symmetry, and open-circuit bundary conditions restore a non-polar state. We suggest that this qualitative difference naturally provides …
In symmetry-broken crystalline solids, pole structures of Berry curvature (BC) can emerge, and they have been utilized as a versatile tool for controlling transport properties. For example, the monopole component of the BC is induced by the time-reversal symmetry breaking, and the BC dipole arises from a lack of inversion symmetry, leading to the anomalous Hall and nonlinear Hall effects, respectively. Based on first-principles calculations, we show that the ferroelectricity in a tin telluride monolayer produces a unique BC distribution, which offers charge- and spin-controllable photocurrents…
Structural, electronic, ferroelectric, and optical properties of two-dimensional (2D) BiN monolayer material with phosphorene-like structure are studied in terms of the density functional theory and modern Berry phase ferroelectric method. Both phonon spectra and molecular dynamics simulations indicate that the BiN monolayer is a room-temperature stable 2D ferroelectric with polarization as large as 580 pC/m. Further studies show that the polarization in the BiN monolayer can be easily switched from [100] to [010] direction over the bridging saddle phase by applying a tensile [010] stress of 2…
Two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectricity has attracted extensive attention since its discovery in the monolayers of van der Waals materials. Here we show that 2D ferroelectricity induced by octahedral rotation distortion is widely present in the perovskite bilayer system through first-principles calculations. The perovskite tolerance factor plays a crucial role in the lattice dynamics and ground-state structure of the perovskite monolayers and bilayers, thus providing an important indicator for screening this hybrid improper ferroelectricity. Generally, the ferroelectric switching via an orthorho…
Hybrid improper ferroelectrics (HIFs) have been intensely studied over the last few years to gain understanding of their temperature induced phase transitions and ferroelectric switching pathways. Here we report a switching from first- to second-order phase transition pathway for topical HIFs $Ca_{3-x}Sr_xTi_2O_7$, which is driven by the differing entropies of the phases that we identify as being associated with the dynamic motion of octahedral tilts and rotations. A greater understanding of the transition pathways in this class of layered perovskites, which host many physical properties that …
Hybrid Improper Ferroelectricity (HIF) allows the generation of an electrical polarization in the AA'BB'O$_6$ double perovskite materials thanks to the combination of two non-polar octahedral distortions. Nevertheless, for selected combination of the A/A' cations a non-polar incommensurate phase is observed with average symmetry $C2/m$. Thanks to a detailed crystallographic description of the incommensurate phase, based on electron, neutron and x-ray diffraction data, we show that the incommensurate modulation is related to an abrupt change of the out-of-phase tilting along the a- and c-axis w…
Charged polar interfaces such as charged ferroelectric domain walls or heterostructured interfaces of ZnO/(Zn,Mg)O and LaAlO3/SrTiO3, across which the normal component of electric polarization changes suddenly, can host large two-dimensional conduction. Charged ferroelectric walls, which are energetically unfavorable in general, were found to be mysteriously abundant in hybrid improper ferroelectric (Ca,Sr)3Ti2O7 crystals. From the exploration of antiphase boundaries in bilayer-perovskites, we discover that each of four polarization-direction states is degenerated with two antiphase domains, a…
The effects of octahedral tilting of RbANb2O7 (A = Bi, Nd) compounds was studied using density-functional theory. In this compound, the structural phase transition was correlated with two octahedral tilting modes (a-a-c0 tilting and a0a0c+ tilting), and magnitude of the octahedral tilting mode was analyzed in the optimized structure. The theoretical results correlated well with the recent experimental results on the ferroelectricity of RbBiNb2O7. The hybrid improper ferroelectricity resulting from the coupling of two octahedral tilting modes and off center displacement mode was analyzed by gro…
The temperature-dependent phase transitions in Ruddlesden-Popper oxides with perovskite bilayers have been under increased scrutiny in recent years due to the so-called hybrid improper ferroelectricity that some chemical compositions exhibit. However, little is currently understood about the hydrostatic pressure dependence of these phase transitions. Herein we present the results of a high-pressure powder synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiment and $ab~initio$ calculations on the bilayered Ruddlesden-Popper phases Ca$_{3}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and Ca$_{3}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$. In both compounds we obser…
Perovskite ABO$_3$ oxides display an amazing variety of phenomena that can be altered by subtle changes in the chemistry and internal structure, making them a favorite class of materials to explore the rational design of novel properties. Here we highlight a recent advance in which rotations of the BO$_6$ octahedra give rise to a novel form of ferroelectricity -- hybrid improper ferroelectricity. Octahedral rotations also strongly influence other structural, magnetic, orbital, and electronic degrees of freedom in perovskites and related materials. Octahedral rotation-driven ferroelectricity co…
We present a detailed study of the structural, electronic, magnetic and ferroelectric properties of prototypical \textit{proper} and \textit{improper} multiferroic (MF) systems such as BiFeO$_{3}$ and orthorhombic HoMnO$_{3}$, respectively, within density functional theory (DFT) and using the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof hybrid functional (HSE). By comparing our results with available experimental data as well as with state-of-the-art GW calculations, we show that the HSE formalism is able to account well for the relevant properties of these compounds and it emerges as an accurate tool for predicti…
We demonstrate that electromagnons can be used to directly probe the nature of a phase transition between magnetically ordered phases in an improper ferroelectric. The antiferromagnetic/paraelectric to antiferromagnetic/ferroelectric phase transition in Cu$_{1-x}$Zn$_{x}$O ($x=0, 0.05$) alloys was tracked via the electromagnon response using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy, on heating and cooling through the phase transition. The transition was found to exhibit thermal hysteresis, confirming its first-order nature, and to broaden under the influence of spin-disorder upon Zn substitution. Th…
The rotation of octahedra (octahedral tilting) is common in ABO3 perovskites and relevant to many physical phenomena, ranging from electronic and magnetic properties, metal-insulator transitions to improper ferroelectricity. Hydrostatic pressure is an efficient way to tune and control octahedral tiltings. However, the pressure behavior of such tiltings can dramatically differ from one material to another, with the origins of such differences remaining controversial. In this work, we discover several new mechanisms and formulate a set of simple rules that allow to understand how pressure affect…
Metal-organic frameworks comprehend a wide class of hybrid organic-inorganic materials with general structure A$_m$BX$_n$, with $A$ and $X$ being organic molecules and B a metal cation. This often results in enhanced structural flexibility and new functionalities. Hybrid perovskites ABX$_3$ are a well-known example.} In an Iron-based perovskites, (DMA)Fe^{II-III}(COOH)_3, dimethylammonium (DMA) molecules are organized in a hexagonal structure. They are orientationally disordered at high temperatures, but order at around $T=100$~K in a peculiar toroidal pattern. Recent experimental and theoreti…
Large electron-electron Coulomb-interactions in correlated systems can lead to a periodic arrangement of localized electrons, the so called "charge-order". The latter is here proposed as a driving force behind ferroelectricity in iron fluoride K0.6FeF3. By means of density functional theory, we propose different non-centrosymmetric d5/d6 charge-ordering patterns, each giving rise to polarization along different crystallographic axes and with different magnitudes. Accordingly, we introduce the concept of "ferroelectric anistropy" (peculiar to improper ferroelectrics with polarization induced by…
Using the symmetry theory we analyze of the flexomagnetic effect in all 90 magnetic classes and showed that 69 of them are flexomagnetic. Then we explore how the symmetry breaking, inevitably present in the vicinity of the surface, changes the local symmetry and thus the form of the flexomagnetic tensors. All possible surface magnetic classes (in the number of 19) were obtained from the 90 bulk magnetic classes for the surface cuts 001, 010 and 100 types. It appeared that all 90 bulk magnetic classes become flexomagnetic, piezomagnetic and piezoelectric in the vicinity of surface. Using the fr…
Titanates with the perovskite structure, including ferroelectrics (e.g., BaTiO$_3$) and ferromagnetic ones (e.g., YTiO$_3$), are important functional materials. Recent theoretical studies predicted multiferroic states in strained EuTiO$_3$ and titanate superlattices, the former of which has already been experimental confirmed. Here, a first-principles calculation is performed to investigate the structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of Y half-substituted LaTiO3. Our results reveal that the magnetism of Y$_{0.5}$La$_{0.5}$TiO$_3$ sensitively depends on its structural details because of…
Within the broad class of multiferroics (compounds showing a coexistence of magnetism and ferroelectricity), we focus on the subclass of "improper electronic ferroelectrics", i.e. correlated materials where electronic degrees of freedom (such as spin, charge or orbital) drive ferroelectricity. In particular, in spin-induced ferroelectrics, there is not only a {\em coexistence} of the two intriguing magnetic and dipolar orders; rather, there is such an intimate link that one drives the other, suggesting a giant magnetoelectric coupling. Via first-principles approaches based on density functiona…
Trirutile-type LiFe$_2$F$_6$ is a charge-ordered material with Fe$^{2+}$/Fe$^{3+}$ configuration. Here its physical properties, including magnetism, electronic structure, phase transition, and charge ordering, are studied theoretically. On one hand, the charge ordering leads to improper ferroelectricity with a large polarization. On the other hand, its magnetic ground state can be tuned from the antiferromagnetic to ferrimagnetic by moderate compressive strain. Thus, LiFe$_2$F$_6$ can be a rare multiferroic with both large magnetization and polarization. Most importantly, since the charge orde…
We present the microscopic theory of improper multiferroicity in BiMnO3, which can be summarized as follows: (1) the ferroelectric polarization is driven by the hidden antiferromagnetic order in the otherwise centrosymmetric C2/c structure; (2) the relativistic spin-orbit interaction is responsible for the canted spin ferromagnetism. Our analysis is supported by numerical calculations of electronic polarization using Berry's phase formalism, which was applied to the low-energy model of BiMnO3 derived from the first-principles calculations. We explicitly show how the electric polarization can b…
Multiferroics, materials where spontaneous long-range magnetic and dipolar orders coexist, represent an attractive class of compounds, which combine rich and fascinating fundamental physics with a technologically appealing potential for applications in the general area of spintronics. Ab-initio calculations have significantly contributed to recent progress in this area, by elucidating different mechanisms for multiferroicity and providing essential information on various compounds where these effects are manifestly at play. In particular, here we present examples of density-functional theory i…
