We have carried out a first-principles theoretical study of the magnetically induced polarization in orthorhombic TbMnO3, a prototypical material in which a cycloidal spin structure generates an electric polarization via the spin-orbit interaction. We compute both the electronic and the lattice-mediated contributions to the polarization and find that the latter is strongly dominant. We analyze the spin-orbit induced forces and lattice displacements from both atomic and mode-decomposition viewpoints, and show that a simple model based on nearest Mn--Mn neighbor Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions is not able to account fully for the results. The direction and magnitude of our computed polarization are in good agreement with experiment.
We performed first principles calculations for epitaxially strained orthorhombic CaTiO$_3$. The computational results reveal the existence of a metastable ferroelectric phase at compressive strain with unexpected in-plane polarization. Symmetry analysis indicates that two distortion modes at the X point combine to induce the polarization, leading to characterization as a hybrid improper ferroelectric. Our work demonstrates a mechanism for improper ferroelectricity in simple perovskites without the need for symmetry lowering by layering or cation ordering.
First-principles calculations are presented for the layered perovskite Ca$_3$Mn$_2$O$_7$. The results reveal a rich set of coupled structural, magnetic and polar domains in which oxygen octahedron rotations induce ferroelectricity, magnetoelectricity and weak-ferromagnetism. The key point is that the rotation distortion is a combination of two non-polar modes with different symmetries. We use the term "hybrid" improper ferroelectricity to describe this phenomenon and discuss how control over magnetism is achieved through these functional antiferrodistortive octahedron rotations.
Ferroelectricity in stuffed aluminate sodalites is demonstrated in the present study. The present results indicate that stuffed aluminate sodalites exhibit excellent performance as a pyroelectric energy harvester, suggesting that they exhibit great promise as a class of materials for highly efficient energy harvesting devices. Using first-principles calculations, we study theoretically the stable 2H hexagonal structure of BaMnO3. We show that from the stable high temperature P63/mmc structure, the compound should exhibit an improper ferroelectric structural phase transition to a P63cm ground state. Combined with its antiferromagnetic properties, 2H-BaMnO3 is therefore expected to be multiferroic at low temperature. The phase transition mechanism in BaMnO3 appears similar to what was reported in YMnO3 in spite of totally different atomic arrangement, cation sizes and Mn valence state.
In this contribution to the special issue on magnetoelectrics and their applications, we focus on some single phase multiferroics theoretically predicted and/or experimentally discovered by the authors in recent years. In these materials, iron is the common core element. However, these materials are conceptually different from the mostly-studied BiFeO$_3$, since their ferroelectricity is improper. Our reviewed materials are not simply repeating one magnetoelectric mechanism, but cover multiple branches of improper ferroelectricity, including the magnetism-driven ferroelectrics, geometric ferro…
The successful theoretical prediction and experimental demonstration of hybrid improper ferroelectricity (HIF) provides a new pathway to couple octahedral rotations, ferroelectricity, and magnetism in complex materials. To enable technological applications, a HIF with a small coercive field is desirable. We successfully grow Sr3Sn2O7 single crystals, and discover that they exhibit the smallest electric coercive field at room temperature among all known HIFs. Furthermore, we demonstate that a small external stress can repeatedly erase and re-generate ferroelastic domains. In addition, using in-…

The central goal of crystal engineering is to develop precise control over material function \emph{via} rational design of structure. A particularly successful realisation of this paradigm is the example of hybrid improper ferroelectricity in layered perovskite materials, where cation vacancies and cooperative octahedral tilts combine to break inversion symmetry. However, in the more chemically diverse and technologically relevant family of inorganic ABX$_3$ perovskites, symmetry conspires to render hybrid coupling to polar distortions impossible. In this study, we use group-theoretical analys…
In hybrid improper ferroelectric systems, polarization arises from the onset of successive nonpolar lattice modes. In this work, measurements and modeling were performed to determine the spatial symmetries of the phases involved in the transitions to these modes. Structural and optical measurements reveal that the tilt and rotation distortions of the MnO6 or TiO6 polyhedra relative to the high symmetry phases driving ferroelectricity in the hybrid improper Ca3X2O7 system (X=Mn and Ti) condense at different temperatures. The tilt angle vanishes abruptly at T$_T$ ~ 400 K for Ca3Mn2O7 (and contin…
Standing on successful first principles predictions for new functional ferroelectric materials, a number of new ferroelectrics have been experimentally discovered. Utilizing trilinear coupling of two types of octahedron rotations, hybrid improper ferroelectricity has been theoretically predicted in ordered perovskites and the Ruddlesden-Popper compounds (Ca$_{3}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$, Ca$_{3}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$, and (Ca/Sr/Ba)$_{3}$(Sn/Zr/Ge)$_{2}$O$_{7}$). However, the ferroelectricity of these compounds has never been experimentally confirmed and even their polar nature has been under debate. Here we…
Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) are introducing new directions in the 2D materials landscape. The coexistence of ferroelectricity and spin-orbit interactions play a key role in their optoelectronic properties. We perform a detailed study on a recently synthesized ferroelectric 2D-HOIP, (AMP)PbI$_4$ (AMP = 4-aminomethyl-piperidinium). The calculated polarization and Rashba parameter are in excellent agreement with experimental values. We report a striking new effect, i.e., an extraordinarily large Rashba anisotropy that is tunable by ferroelectric polarization:…
Using first principles calculations, we study the microscopic origin of ferroelectricity (FE) induced by magnetic order in the orthorhombic HoMnO3. We obtain the largest ferroelectric polarization observed in the whole class of improper magnetic ferroelectrics to date. We find that the two proposed mechanisms for FE in multiferroics, lattice- and electronic-based, are simultaneously active in this compound: a large portion of the ferroelectric polarization arises due to quantum-mechanical effects of electron orbital polarization, in addition to the conventional polar atomic displacements. An i…
The noncollinear cycloidal magnetic order breaks the inversion symmetry in CaMn$_{7}$O$_{12}$, generating one of the largest spin-orbit driven ferroelectric polarizations measured to date. In this Letter, the microscopic origin of the polarization, including its direction, charge density redistribution, magnetic exchange interactions, and its coupling to the spin helicity, is explored via first principles calculations. The Berry phase computed polarization exhibits almost pure electronic behavior, as the Mn displacements are negligible, $\approx$~0.7~m\textrmÅ. The polarization magnitude and d…
Electronic and structural phenomena at the twin domain wall-surface junctions in the ferroelastic materials are analyzed. Carriers accumulation caused by the strain-induced band structure changes originated via the deformation potential mechanism, structural order parameter gradient, rotostriction and flexoelectric coupling is explored. Approximate analytical results show that inhomogeneous elastic strains, which exist in the vicinity of the twin walls - surface junctions due to the rotostriction coupling, decrease the local band gap via the deformation potential and flexoelectric coupling mec…
High-temperature electronic materials are in constant demand as the required operational range for various industries increases. Here we design $(A,A^\prime)B_2$O$_6$ perovskite oxides with [111] ``rock salt" $A$-site cation order and predict them to be potential high-temperature piezoelectric materials. By selecting bulk perovskites which have a tendency towards only out-of-phase $B$O$_6$ rotations, we avoid possible staggered ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transitions while also retaining non-centrosymmetric crystal structures necessary for ferro- and piezoelectricity. Using density fun…
Antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions generating from the spin-orbit coupling induce various fascinating properties, like magnetoelectric (ME) effect, weak ferromagnetism and non-trivial topological spin textures like skyrmions, in real materials. Compared to their symmetric isotropic exchange counterpart, these interactions are generally of a weaker order of strength, creating modest twisting in the spin structure which results in weak ferromagntism or weak linear ME effect. Our proposed two-sublattice model, in contrast, predicts a hitherto unobserved, charge ordered non-coll…
The number of magnetoelectric multiferroic materials reported to date is scarce, as magnetic structures that break inversion symmetry and induce an improper ferroelectric polarization typically arise through subtle competition between different magnetic interactions. The (NH4)2[FeCl5(H2O)] compound is a rare case where such improper ferroelectricity has been observed in a molecular material. We have used single crystal and powder neutron diffraction to obtain detailed solutions for the crystal and magnetic structures of (NH4)2[FeCl5(H2O)], from which we determined the mechanism of multiferroic…
There is great interest in hybrid organic-inorganic materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The compounds [C(NH$_{2}$)$_{3}$]M(HCOO)$_{3}$, where M=Cu$^{2+}$ or Cr$^{2+}$ are Jahn-Teller (JT) active ions, are MOF with perovskite topology which crystallizes in polar space group Pna2$_{1}$. In inorganic compounds, octahedral tilting and Jahn-Teller structural distortions are usually non-polar distortions. However, in this MOF cooperative interactions between the antiferro-distortive distortions of the framework and the C(NH2)$_{3}$ organic cation via hydrogen bonding breaks the invers…
Recent interests towards novel functionalities arising at domain walls of ferroic materials naturally call for a microscopic understanding. To this end, first-principles calculations have been performed in order to provide solid evidence of ferroelectricity in the twin walls of nonpolar CaTiO3 and magnetic CaMnO3. We show that ferroelectricity arises from rotation/tilting octahedral distortions --- cooperatively acting at the twin wall in both considered systems --- rather than from a proper secondary ferroelectric instability, as often believed. Our results are in excellent agreement with exp…
Crystallography and dielectric properties in Dion-Jacobson layered perovskites, CsNdNb$_2$O$_7$ and RbNdNb$_2$O$_7$, have been examined in dense polycrystalline samples, and polarization hysteresis loops that substantiate ferroelectricity have been observed at room temperature. The theoretical mechanism for the spontaneous polarization, "hybrid improper ferroelectric mechanism,'' induced by a combination of two types of non-polar octahedral rotations, is confirmed in these two phases. Our samples show remanent polarizations of 2-3 $μ$C/cm$^2$, which are much larger than those obtained in polyc…
Cu3Nb2O8 is an unusual multiferroic compound that undergoes a series of magnetic ordering at low temperatures. Concurrent development of electric polarization has been reported at TN1 ~25 K corresponding to a non-collinear helicoidal ordering (Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 137205 (2011)). But questions remain on the microscopic origin of such phenomena. In this communication, we report a detailed study of induced polar ordering in Cu3Nb2O8 by performing polarization, magnetization, dielectric constant and heat capacity measurements over a broad range of temperature and magnetic field. The dielectric c…
Ca$_3$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is an experimentally confirmed hybrid improper ferroelectric material, in which the electric polarization is induced by a combination of the coherent TiO$_6$ octahedral rotation and tilting. In this work, we investigate the tuning of ferroelectricity of Ca$_3$Ti$_2$O$_7$ using iso-valent substitutions on Ca-sites. Due to the size mismatch, larger/smaller alkaline earths prefer $A$'/$A$ sites respectively, allowing the possibility for site-selective substitutions. Without extra carriers, such site-selected iso-valent substitutions can significantly tune the TiO$_6$ octahedral …
We report the relationship between epitaxial strain and the crystallographic orientation of the in-phase rotation axis and A-site displacements in Pbnm-type perovskite films. Synchrotron diffraction measurements of EuFeO3 films under strain states ranging from 2% compressive to 0.9% tensile on cubic or rhombohedral substrates exhibit a combination of a-a+c- and a+a-c- rotational patterns. We compare the EuFeO3 behavior with previously reported experimental and theoretical work on strained Pbnm-type films on non-orthorhombic substrates, as well as additional measurements from LaGaO3, LaFeO3, an…
By means of first-principles simulations, we unambiguously show that improper ferroelectricity in magnetite in the low-temperature insulating phase is driven by charge-ordering. An accurate comparison between monoclinic ferroelectric Cc and paraelectric P2/c structures shows that the polarization arises because of "shifts" of electronic charge between octahedral Fe sites, leading to a non-centrosymmetric Fe2+/Fe3+ charge-ordered pattern. Our predicted values for polarization, in good agreement with available experimental values, are discussed in terms of point-charge dipoles located on selecte…
Using a joint approach of density functional theory and model calculations, we demonstrate that a prototypical charge ordered half-doped manganite, La$_{1/2}$Ca$_{1/2}$MnO$_3$ is multiferroic. The combination of a peculiar charge-orbital ordering and a tendency to form spin dimers breaks inversion symmetry, leads to a ferroelectric ground-state with a polarization up to several $μC/cm^2$. The presence of improper ferroelectricity does not depend on hotly debated structural details of this material: in the Zener-polaron structure we find a similar dramatic ferroelectric response with a large po…
Multiferroics, where two or more ferroic order parameters coexist, is one of the hottest fields in condensed matter physics and materials science[1-9]. However, the coexistence of magnetism and conventional ferroelectricity is physically unfavoured[10]. Recently several remedies have been proposed, e.g., improper ferroelectricity induced by specific magnetic[6] or charge orders[2]. Guiding by these theories, currently most research is focused on frustrated magnets, which usually have complicated magnetic structure and low magnetic ordering temperature, consequently far from the practical appli…
Doping ferroelectrics with carriers is often detrimental to polarization. This makes the design and discovery of metals that undergo a ferroelectric-like transition challenging. In this letter, we show from first principles that the oxygen octahedral rotations in perovskites are often enhanced by electron doping, and this can be used as a means to strengthen the structural polarization in certain hybrid-improper ferroelectrics -- compounds in which the polarization is not stabilized by the long range Coulomb interactions but is instead induced by a trilinear coupling to octahedral rotations. W…
In this work we analyze the finite-size effects on the structural properties and on the polarization of the rhombohedral phase of HfO$_2$ subjected to a biaxial compressive strain. We show how the presence of surface charges affects the polarization, leading to a strong reduction with respect to its bulk value. This reduction can be ascribed to two mechanisms: the coupling between compressive strain and the phase-transition order parameter; the changes in the ferroelectric distortion. We give two alternative explanations of this phenomenon: from an atomistic point of view, analyzing the evolut…
We study the interplay of structural and polar distortions in hexagonal YMnO3 and short-period PbTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices by means of first-principles calculations at constrained electric displacement field D. We find that in YMnO3 the tilts of the oxygen polyhedra produce a robustly polar ground state, which persists at any choice of the electrical boundary conditions. Conversely, in PTO/STO the antiferrodistortive instabilities alone do not break inversion symmetry, and open-circuit bundary conditions restore a non-polar state. We suggest that this qualitative difference naturally provides …
Two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectricity has attracted extensive attention since its discovery in the monolayers of van der Waals materials. Here we show that 2D ferroelectricity induced by octahedral rotation distortion is widely present in the perovskite bilayer system through first-principles calculations. The perovskite tolerance factor plays a crucial role in the lattice dynamics and ground-state structure of the perovskite monolayers and bilayers, thus providing an important indicator for screening this hybrid improper ferroelectricity. Generally, the ferroelectric switching via an orthorho…
Hybrid improper ferroelectrics (HIFs) have been intensely studied over the last few years to gain understanding of their temperature induced phase transitions and ferroelectric switching pathways. Here we report a switching from first- to second-order phase transition pathway for topical HIFs $Ca_{3-x}Sr_xTi_2O_7$, which is driven by the differing entropies of the phases that we identify as being associated with the dynamic motion of octahedral tilts and rotations. A greater understanding of the transition pathways in this class of layered perovskites, which host many physical properties that …
Charged polar interfaces such as charged ferroelectric domain walls or heterostructured interfaces of ZnO/(Zn,Mg)O and LaAlO3/SrTiO3, across which the normal component of electric polarization changes suddenly, can host large two-dimensional conduction. Charged ferroelectric walls, which are energetically unfavorable in general, were found to be mysteriously abundant in hybrid improper ferroelectric (Ca,Sr)3Ti2O7 crystals. From the exploration of antiphase boundaries in bilayer-perovskites, we discover that each of four polarization-direction states is degenerated with two antiphase domains, a…
We have studied ferroelectricity in Dion-Jacobson CsBiNb$_2$O$_7$ from first principles. Using group-theoretical analysis and first-principles density functional calculations of the total energy and phonons, we perform a systematic study of the energy surface around a paraelectric prototypic phase. Our results suggest that CsBiNb$_2$O$_7$ is a ferroelectric with a polarization of P$_s$=40$μ$C cm$^{-2}$. We propose further experiments to clarify this point.
The effect of the octahedral tilting of ASnO3 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) parent compound and bi-color ASnO3/BSnO3 superlattice (A, B = Ca, Sr, Ba) was predicted from density-functional theory. In the ASnO3 parent compound, the structural phase transition as a function of the A-site cation size was correlated with the magnitude of the two octahedral tilting modes (a-a-c0 tilting and a0a0c+ tilting). The magnitude of the octahedral tilting modes in the superlattices was analyzed quantitatively and found to be associated with that of the constituent parent materials. The ASnO3/BSnO3 superlattices showed hy…
We elucidate the microscopic mechanism that causes a suppression of ferroelectricity and an enhancement of octahedral rotations in EuTiO3 from first principles. We find that the hybridization of the rare-earth Eu 4f states with the B-site Ti cation drives the system away from ferroelectricity. We also show that the magnetic order dependence of this hybridization is the dominant source of spin-phonon coupling in this material. Our results underline the importance of rare-earth f electrons on the lattice dynamics and stability of these transition metal oxides.
The effects of octahedral tilting of RbANb2O7 (A = Bi, Nd) compounds was studied using density-functional theory. In this compound, the structural phase transition was correlated with two octahedral tilting modes (a-a-c0 tilting and a0a0c+ tilting), and magnitude of the octahedral tilting mode was analyzed in the optimized structure. The theoretical results correlated well with the recent experimental results on the ferroelectricity of RbBiNb2O7. The hybrid improper ferroelectricity resulting from the coupling of two octahedral tilting modes and off center displacement mode was analyzed by gro…
The ground state structural, electronic and magnetic properties of multiferroic TbMn$_2$O$_5$ are investigated via first-principles calculations. We show that the ferroelectricity in TbMn$_2$O$_5$ is driven by the non-centrosymmetric magnetic ordering, without invoking the spin-orbit coupling and non-collinear spins. The {\it intrinsic} electric polarization in this compound is calculated to be 1187 $nC\cdot$ cm$^{-2}$, an order of magnitude larger than previously thought.
Density functional calculations are performed to study the effect of epitaxial strain on PbZrO3. We find a remarkably small energy difference between the epitaxially strained polar R3c and nonpolar Pbam structures over the full range of experimentally accessible epitaxial strains -3% < η< 4%. While ferroelectricity is favored for all compressive strains, for tensile strains the small energy difference between the nonpolar ground state and the alternative polar phase yields a robust antiferroelectric ground state. The coexistence of ferroelectricity and antiferroelectricity observed in thin fil…
We use first principles density functional theory calculations to investigate the effect of biaxial strain in the low-temperature structural and ferroelectric properties of [111]-oriented SrTiO$_3$. We find that [111] biaxial strain, achievable by coherent epitaxial growth along the [111] direction, induces structural distortions in SrTiO$_3$ that are not present in either bulk or [001]-oriented SrTiO$_3$. Under [111] biaxial strain, SrTiO$_3$ displays ferroelectricity at tensile strain, and paraelectricity at compressive strain. We compute the phonon spectrum and macroscopic polarization of S…
We present results of local spin density approximation (LSDA) pseudopotential calculations for the perovskite structure oxide, bismuth manganite (BiMnO3). The origin of the differences between bismuth manganite and other perovskite manganites is determined by first calculating total energies and band structures of the high symmetry cubic phase, then sequentially lowering the magnetic and structural symmetry. Our results indicate that covalent bonding between bismuth cations and oxygen anions stabilizes different magnetic and structural phases compared with the rare earth manganites. This is co…
The structure and polarization of the as-yet hypothetical Ruddlesden-Popper compound Pb$_2$TiO$_4$ are investigated within density-functional theory. Zone enter phonons of the high-symmetry K$_2$NiF$_4$-type reference structure, space group $I4/mmm$, were calculated. At the theoretical ground-state lattice constants, there is one unstable infrared-active phonon. This phonon freezes in to give the $I2mm$ ferroelectric state. As a function of epitaxial strain, two additional ferroelectric phases are found, with space groups $I4mm$ and $F2mm$ at compressive and tensile strains, respectively.
We investigate the ferrimagnetism and ferroelectricity of bulk NiFe$_2$O$_4$ with tetragonal $P4_122$ ~symmetry by means of density functional calculations using generalized gradient approximation + Hubbard $U$ approach. Special attention is paid to finding the most energetically favorable configuration on magnetic ordering and further calculating the reliable spontaneous electric polarization. With the fully optimized crystalline structure of the most stable configuration, the spontaneous polarization is obtained to be 23 $μ$C/cm$^2$ along the z direction, which originates from the hybridizat…
We study the polarization induced via spin-orbit interaction by a magnetic cycloidal order in orthorhombic TbMnO3 using first-principle methods. The case of magnetic spiral lying in the b-c plane is analyzed, in which the pure electronic contribution to the polarization is shown to be small. We focus our attention on the lattice-mediated contribution, and study it's dependence on the Coulomb interaction parameter U in the LDA+U method and on the wave-vector of the spin spiral. The role of the spin-orbit interaction on different sites is also analyzed.
We present a detailed study of the structural, electronic, magnetic and ferroelectric properties of prototypical \textit{proper} and \textit{improper} multiferroic (MF) systems such as BiFeO$_{3}$ and orthorhombic HoMnO$_{3}$, respectively, within density functional theory (DFT) and using the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof hybrid functional (HSE). By comparing our results with available experimental data as well as with state-of-the-art GW calculations, we show that the HSE formalism is able to account well for the relevant properties of these compounds and it emerges as an accurate tool for predicti…
We demonstrate that electromagnons can be used to directly probe the nature of a phase transition between magnetically ordered phases in an improper ferroelectric. The antiferromagnetic/paraelectric to antiferromagnetic/ferroelectric phase transition in Cu$_{1-x}$Zn$_{x}$O ($x=0, 0.05$) alloys was tracked via the electromagnon response using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy, on heating and cooling through the phase transition. The transition was found to exhibit thermal hysteresis, confirming its first-order nature, and to broaden under the influence of spin-disorder upon Zn substitution. Th…
First principles calculations are used to investigate the effects of epitaxial strain on the structure of the perovskite oxide CaTiO$_3$, with particular focus on the stabilization of a ferroelectric phase related to a polar instability hidden in the orthorhombic equilibrium bulk $Pbnm$ structure but found in previous first-principles studies of the ideal cubic perovskite high-symmetry reference structure. At 1.5% strain, we find an epitaxial orientation transition between the $ab$-$ePbnm$ phase, favored for compressive strains, and the $c$-$ePbnm$ phase. For larger tensile strains, a polar in…
Ground-state structure is found and pressure-induced phase transitions up to 210 kbar are studied in mercury titanate from first principles within the density functional theory. It is established that the $R3c$ structure experimentally observed in HgTiO$_3$ is metastable at ambient pressure. With increasing the hydrostatic pressure, the ground-state structure changes following the $R{\bar 3} \to R3c \to Pbnm$ sequence. It is shown that the appearance of ferroelectricity in HgTiO$_3$ at $P = 0$ is associated with an unstable phonon mode. Optical and elastic properties of different phases of mer…
The rotation of octahedra (octahedral tilting) is common in ABO3 perovskites and relevant to many physical phenomena, ranging from electronic and magnetic properties, metal-insulator transitions to improper ferroelectricity. Hydrostatic pressure is an efficient way to tune and control octahedral tiltings. However, the pressure behavior of such tiltings can dramatically differ from one material to another, with the origins of such differences remaining controversial. In this work, we discover several new mechanisms and formulate a set of simple rules that allow to understand how pressure affect…
Ba(Zr,Ti)O$_3$ is a lead-free relaxor ferroelectric. Using the first-principles method, the ferroelectric dipole moments for pure BaTiO$_3$ and Ba(Zr,Ti)O$_3$ supercells have been studied. All possible ion configurations of BaZr$_{0.5}$Ti$_{0.5}$O$_3$ and BaZr$_{0.25}$Ti$_{0.75}$O$_3$ are constructed in a $2\times2\times2$ supercell. For the half-substituted case, divergence of ferroelectric properties has been found among these structures, which seriously depends on the arrangement of Ti and Zr ions. Thus our results provide a reasonable explanation to the relaxor behavior of Ba(Zr,Ti)O$_3$. …
We present a theoretical investigation of the anomalous ferroelectricity of mixed-stack charge transfer molecular crystals, based on the Peierls-Hubbard model, and first principles calculations for its parameterization. This approach is first validated by reproducing the temperature-induced transition and the electronic polarization of TTF-CA, and then applied to a novel series of hydrogen-bonded crystals, for which room temperature ferroelectricity has recently been claimed. Our analysis shows that the hydrogen-bonded systems present a very low degree of charge transfer and hence support a ve…
Based on the first-principles calculations, we investigated the ferroelectric properties of two-dimensional (2D) Group-IV tellurides XTe (X=Si, Ge and Sn), with a focus on GeTe. 2D Group-IV tellurides energetically prefer an orthorhombic phase with a hinge-like structure and an in-plane spontaneous polarization. The intrinsic Curie temperature Tc of monolayer GeTe is as high as 570 K and can be raised quickly by applying a tensile strain. An out-of-plane electric field can effectively decrease the coercive field for the reversal of polarization, extending its potential for regulating the polar…
