Structural, electronic, ferroelectric, and optical properties of two-dimensional (2D) BiN monolayer material with phosphorene-like structure are studied in terms of the density functional theory and modern Berry phase ferroelectric method. Both phonon spectra and molecular dynamics simulations indicate that the BiN monolayer is a room-temperature stable 2D ferroelectric with polarization as large as 580 pC/m. Further studies show that the polarization in the BiN monolayer can be easily switched from [100] to [010] direction over the bridging saddle phase by applying a tensile [010] stress of 2.54 N/m or compressive [100] stress of -1.18 N/m. This phase transition makes its lattice constants vary in a large range compared to other non-ferroelectric 2D materials. Moreover, through applying uniaxial tensile stress parallel to the polarization, one can fix the polarization and change the semiconductor energy gap from direct to indirect one. The optical properties feature a very strong anisotropy in reflectivity below the photon energy of 4 eV. All these significant ferroelectric, electronic, and optical properties make us believe that the 2D BiN monolayer can be used to make stretchable electronic devices and optical applications.
The alkaline earth binary oxides adopt a simple rocksalt structure and form an important family of compounds because of their large presence in the earth's mantle and their potential use in microelectronic devices. In comparison to the class of multifunctional ferroelectric perovskite oxides, however, their practical applications remain limited and the emergence of ferroelectricity and related functional properties in simple binary oxides seems so unlikely that it was never previously considered. Here, we show using first-principles density functional calculations that ferroelectricity can be …
We predict that ferroelectric phase can be induced by the strong intrinsic surface stress inevitably present under the curved surface in the high aspect ratio cylindrical nanoparticles of nonferroelectric binary oxides (BaO, EuO, MgO, etc). We calculated the sizes and temperature range of the ferroelectric phase in BaO nanowires. The analytical calculations were performed within Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory with phenomenological parameters extracted from the first principle calculations [E. Bousquet et al, Strain-induced ferroelectricity in simple rocksalt binary oxides. arXiv:0906.4235v1…
By means of density functional theory calculations, we predict that several two dimensional AB binary monolayers, where A and B atoms belong to group IV or III-V, are ferroelectric. Dipoles arise from the buckled structure, where the A and B ions are located on the sites of a bipartite corrugated honeycomb lattice with trigonal symmetry. We discuss the emerging valley-dependent properties and the coupling of spin and valley physics, which arise from the loss of inversion symmetry, and explore the interplay between ferroelectricity and Rashba spin-spitting phenomena. We show that valley-related…
The observation of ferroelectric, ferromagnetic and ferroelastic phases in thin films of binary oxides attract the broad interest of scientists and engineers. However, the theoretical consideration of observed behaviour physical nature was performed mainly for HfO2 thin films from the first principles, and in the framework of Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) phenomenological approach with a special attention to the role of oxygen vacancies in both cases. Allowing for generality of the LGD theory we applied it to the group of binary oxides in this work. The calculations have been performed in t…
HfO2, a simple binary oxide, holds ultra-scalable ferroelectricity integrable into silicon technology. Polar orthorhombic (Pbc21) form in ultra-thin-films ascribes as the plausible root-cause of the astonishing ferroelectricity, which has thought not attainable in bulk crystals. Though, perplexities remain primarily due to the polymorphic nature and the characterization challenges at small-length scales. Herein, utilizing a state-of-the-art Laser-Diode-heated Floating Zone technique, we report ferroelectricity in bulk single-crystalline HfO2:Y as well as the presence of anti-polar Pbca phase a…
We report on the growth and properties of high quality bicolor oxide superlattices, composed of two perovskites out of BaTiO3, CaTiO3, and SrTiO3. The artificially grown superlattices are structurally unique and have a macroscopically homogeneous phase, which is not feasible to recreate in bulk form. By artificial structuring, it is found that the polarization of such superlattices can be highly increased as compared to pseudo-binary ceramics with the same overall composition. Such strong enhancement in superlattice is attributed to newly-developed ionic motions of A-site cations at the hetero…
Low-dimensional multiferroic materials hold great promises in miniaturized device applications such as nanoscale transducers, actuators, sensors, photovoltaics, and nonvolatile memories. Here, using first-principles theory we predict that two-dimensional (2D) monolayer Group IV monochalcogenides including GeS, GeSe, SnS, and SnSe are a class of 2D semiconducting multiferroics with strongly coupled giant in-plane spontaneous ferroelectric polarization and spontaneous ferroelastic lattice strain that are thermodynamically stable at room temperature and beyond, and can be effectively modulated by…
(Ba,Ca)TiO$_3$ and Ba(Ti,Zr)O$_3$ solid solutions are the building blocks of lead-free piezoelectric materials that attract a renewed interest. We investigate the properties of these systems by means of first-principles calculations, with a focus on the lattice dynamics and the competition between different ferroelectric phases. We first analyze the four parent compounds in order to compare their properties and their different tendency towards ferroelectricity. The core of our study is systematic characterization of the binary systems (Ba,Ca)TiO$_3$ and Ba(Ti,Zr)O$_3$ within both the Virtual C…
Density functional theory based study of the pressure dependent physical properties of binary SnS compound has been carried out. The computed elastic constants reveal that SnS is mechanically stable and brittle under ambient conditions. With increasing pressure, the compound becomes ductile. The Poisson's ratio also indicates brittle-ductile transition with increasing pressure. The hardness of SnS increases significantly with pressure. The compound possesses elastic anisotropy. The ground state electronic band structure is semiconducting with a small band gap which becomes metallic under press…

Analyses of computed elastic parameters reveal that SrSi2 is a mechanically stable, ductile, moderately machinable, and relatively soft material. The compound is predicted to be dynamically stable and possesses significant metallic bonding. Study of thermophysical properties, namely, Debye temperature, Grüneisen parameter, acoustic parameters, melting tem…
In the present study we have investigated the structural properties, electronic band dispersion, elastic constants, acoustic behavior, phonon spectrum, optical properties, and a number of thermophysical parameters of binary topological semimetal BaGa2 in details via first-principles calculations using the density functional theory (DFT) based formalisms. The electronic band structure and density of states calculations with spin orbit coupling reveal semimetallic nature with clear topological signature. The minimum thermal conductivities and anisotropies of the compound are calculated. The elas…
Apart from being so far the only known binary multiferroic compound, CuO has a much higher transition temperature into the multiferroic state, 230 K, than any other known material in which the electric polarization is induced by spontaneous magnetic order, typically lower than 100 K. Although the magnetically induced ferroelectricity of CuO is firmly established, no magnetoelectric effect has been observed so far as direct crosstalk between bulk magnetization and electric polarization counterparts. Here we demonstrate that high magnetic fields of about 50 T are able to suppress the helical mod…

The calculated ground state lattice parameters in both the symmetries are in excellent agreement with available experimental results.…
The discovery of ferroelectric HfO2 in thin films and more recently in bulk is an important breakthrough because of its silicon-compatibility and unexpectedly persistent polarization at low dimensions, but the origin of its ferroelectricity is still under debate. The stabilization of the metastable polar orthorhombic phase was often considered as the cumulative result of various extrinsic factors such as stress, grain boundary, and oxygen vacancies as well as phase transition kinetics during the annealing process. We propose a novel mechanism to stabilize the polar orthorhombic phase over the …
Binary metallic phosphide, Nb2P5, belongs to technologically important class of materials. Quite surprisingly, a large number of physical properties of Nb2P5, including elastic properties and their anisotropy, acoustic, electronic (DOS, charge density distribution, electron density difference), thermo-physical, bonding characteristics, and optical properties have not been investigated at all. In the present work we have explored all these properties in details for the first time employing density functional theory based first-principles method. Nb2P5 is found to be a mechanically stable, elast…
My research is dedicated to the electronic properties of functional oxides. My activity specifically focuses on ferroelectric tunnel junctions in which an ultrathin layer of ferroelectric material is intercalated between two metallic electrodes. In these devices, polarization reversal induces large modifications of the tunnel resistance, leading to a non-destructive readout of the information. After a demonstration of the concept with scanning probe microscopy techniques, I have been exploring the properties of ferroelectric tunnel junctions with various ferroelectric materials (BaTiO3, BiFeO3…
The mechanical, structural, electronic and magnetic properties of s-triazine sheet (C6N6) with embedded Mn atom (Mn-C6N6) is investigated under the influence of external environment using density functional theory. Our results show that Mn-C6N6 system is structurally and mechanically stable. The binding energy of Mn embedded in C6N6 sheet can be modulated under the influence of symmetric deformation and perpendicular electric field respectively. The semiconducting property of pure C6N6 sheet is maintained upon embedment of Mn atom in the porous site. It is also found that small increment in bi…
