The observation of ferroelectric, ferromagnetic and ferroelastic phases in thin films of binary oxides attract the broad interest of scientists and engineers. However, the theoretical consideration of observed behaviour physical nature was performed mainly for HfO2 thin films from the first principles, and in the framework of Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) phenomenological approach with a special attention to the role of oxygen vacancies in both cases. Allowing for generality of the LGD theory we applied it to the group of binary oxides in this work. The calculations have been performed in the assumption that oxygen vacancies, as elastic dipoles, can be partially transformed into electric dipoles due to the defect site-induced and/or surface-induced inversion symmetry breaking (via e.g. piezoelectric effect), and can "migrate" entire the depth of an ultra-thin film. We calculated the dependence of the film polarization on the applied voltage for room temperature and different film thickness. Since the many films of binary oxide are ferroelectric and ferromagnetic due to the same oxygen vacancies, they can be multiferroics. Performed calculations have shown that thin films of binary oxides can be considered as a new wide class of multiferroics with broad spectra of physical properties useful for application in nanoelectronics and nanotechnology. The properties can be controlled by the choice of oxygen vacancies concentration, film thickness and special technological treatment, such as annealing.
Oxyhydroxide minerals like FeOOH have been a research focus in geology for studying the Earth interior, and also in chemistry for studying oxygen electrocatalysis activity. In this paper we provide first-principles evidence of a new class of ferroelectrics or multiferroics among them:GaOOH,InOOH,CrOOH,FeOOH, which are earth-abundant minerals and have been experimentally verified to possess distorted rutile structures, are ferroelectric with considerable polarizations(up to 24 muC/cm2) and piezoelectric coefficients. Their atomic-thick layer may possess vertical polarization robust against depo…
We report observation of surface-defect-induced room temperature multiferroicity - surface ferromagnetism ($M_S$ at 50 kOe $\sim$0.005 emu/g), ferroelectricity ($P_R$ $\sim$2 nC/cm$^2$), and significantly large magnetoelectric coupling (decrease in $P_R$ by $\sim$80\% under $\sim$15 kOe field) - in nanorods (diameter $\sim$100 nm) of double perovskite Y$_2$NiMnO$_6$ compound. In bulk form, this system exhibits multiferroicity only below its magnetic transition temperature $T_N$ $\approx$ 70 K. On the other hand, the oxygen vacancies, formed at the surface region (thickness $\sim$10 nm) of the …
Large electron-electron Coulomb-interactions in correlated systems can lead to a periodic arrangement of localized electrons, the so called "charge-order". The latter is here proposed as a driving force behind ferroelectricity in iron fluoride K0.6FeF3. By means of density functional theory, we propose different non-centrosymmetric d5/d6 charge-ordering patterns, each giving rise to polarization along different crystallographic axes and with different magnitudes. Accordingly, we introduce the concept of "ferroelectric anistropy" (peculiar to improper ferroelectrics with polarization induced by…
Combining ferroelectricity with other properties such as visible light absorption or long-range magnetic order requires the discovery of new families of ferroelectric materials. Here, through the analysis of a high-throughput database of phonon band structures, we identify a new structural family of anti-Ruddlesden-Popper phases A$_4$X$_2$O (A=Ca, Sr, Ba, Eu, X=Sb, P, As, Bi) showing ferroelectric and anti-ferroelectric behaviors. The discovered ferroelectrics belong to the new class of hyperferroelectrics which polarize even under open-circuit boundary conditions. The polar distortion involve…
Cupric oxide is a unique magnetic ferroelectric material with a transition temperature significantly higher than the boiling point of liquid nitrogen. However, the mechanism of high-T$_c$ multiferroicity in CuO remains puzzling. In this paper, we clarify the mechanism of high-T$_c$ multiferroicity in CuO, using combined first-principles calculations and an effective Hamiltonian model. We find that CuO contains two magnetic sublattices, with strong intrasublattice interactions and weakly frustrated intersublattice interactions, which may represent one of the main reasons for the high ordering t…
Two-dimensional (2D) multiferroics are key candidate materials towards advancement of smart technology. Here, we employed a simple synthesis approach to address the long-awaited dream of developing ferroelectric and multiferroic 2D materials, specially in the new class of materials called MXenes. The etched Ti$_3$C$_2$T$_x$ MXene was first synthesized after HF-treatment followed by delamination process for successful synthesis of free-standing Ti$_3$C$_2$T$_x$ film. The free-standing film was then exposed to air at room-temperature as well as heated at different temperature to form TiO$_2$ lay…
Multiferroics, defined for those multifunctional materials in which two or more kinds of fundamental ferroicities coexist, have become one of the hottest topics of condensed matter physics and materials science in recent years. The coexistence of several order parameters in multiferroics brings out novel physical phenomena and offers possibilities for new device functions. The revival of research activities on multiferroics is evidenced by some novel discoveries and concepts, both experimentally and theoretically. In this review article, we outline some of the progressive milestones in this st…
In this contribution to the special issue on multiferroics we focus on multiferroicity driven by different forms of charge ordering. We will present the generic mechanisms by which charge ordering can induce ferroelectricity in magnetic systems. There is a number of specific classes of materials for which this is relevant. We will discuss in some detail $(i)$ perovskite manganites of the type (PrCa)MnO$_3$, $(ii)$ the complex and interesting situation in magnetite Fe$_3$O$_4$, $(iii)$ strongly ferroelectric frustrated LuFe$_2$O$_4$, $(iv)$ an example of a quasi one-dimensional organic system. …
We discuss the particle size driven tunability of the coexistence of ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity in Pr0.67Ca0.33MnO3(PCMO) with the help of x ray diffraction, magnetization, impedance spectroscopy, and remanent polarization measurements. The remanent polarization measurements using the positive up negative down method clearly prove the existence of ferroelectricity in PCMO with phase separation between Zener polaron(ZP) ordered P21nm and disordered Pbnm structures. We also find that the ferroelectric response is enhanced in nanocrystalline samples so long as ZP ordering is not destroye…
Ferroelectricity in the incommensurate helical magnetic phase (below TN, 43K) of alpha CaCr2O4 has been confirmed by pyroelectric measurements. Magnetoelectric and magnetodielectric coupling exist below TN and are proportional to the square of magnetic field. From symmetry analysis, we suggest that the presence of an external electric field destabilizes the symmetrical 2221' phase and stabilizes 21' symmetry. This provides a unique system in which polarization varies as the fourth-degree of the order-parameter amplitude and exhibit a vanishingly small value below the first-order transition at …
Controlling the ferroelectricity and magnetism in multiferroic materials has been an important research topic. We report the formation of a highly polarized state in multiferroic DyMnO3 single crystals which develops well above the magnetic transition temperatures, and we attribute it the thermally stimulated depolarization current effect of excess holes forming Mn4+ ions in the system. We also show that this high temperature polarized state intimately correlates with the lower temperature ferroelectric state that is induced by the incommensurate spiral magnetic order of Mn spins. This study d…
The ferroelectricity of the spiral magnets LiCu2O2 and LiCuVO4 was examined by calculating the electric polarizations of their spin spiral states on the basis of density functional theory with spin-orbit coupling. Our work unambiguously reveals that spin-orbit coupling is responsible for the ferroelectricity with the primary contribution from the spin-orbit coupling on the Cu sites, but the asymmetric density distribution responsible for the electric polarization occurs mainly around the O atoms. The electric polarization is calculated to be much greater for the ab- than for the bc-plane spin …

We show by means of ab-initio calculations that the organic molecular crystal TTF-CA is multiferroic: it has an instability to develop spontaneously both ferroelectric and magnetic ordering. Ferroelectricity is driven by a Peierls transition of the TTF-CA in its ionic state. Subsequent antiferromagnetic ordering strongly enhances the opposing electronic contribution to the polarization: it is so large that it switches the direction of the total ferroelectric moment. Within an extended Hubbard model we capture the essence of the electronic interactions in TTF-CA, confirm the presence of a multi…
Simultaneous co-existence of room-temperature(T) ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity in Fe doped BaTiO$_3$ (BTO) is intriguing, as such Fe doping into tetragonal BTO, a room-T ferroelectric (FE), results in the stabilization of its hexagonal polymorph which is FE only below $\sim$80K. Here, we investigate its origin and show that Fe-doped BTO has a mixed-phase room-temperature multiferroicity, where the ferromagnetism comes from the majority hexagonal phase and a minority tetragonal phase gives rise to the observed weak ferroelectricity. In order to achieve majority tetragonal phase (responsib…
Motivated by the potential applications of their intrinsic cross-coupling properties, the interest in multiferroic materials has constantly increased recently, leading to significant experimental and theoretical advancements. From the theoretical point of view, recent progresses have allowed to identify different mechanisms responsible for the appearence of ferroelectric polarization coexisting with -- and coupled to -- magnetic properties. This chapter aims at reviewing the fundamental mechanisms devised so far, mainly in transition-metal oxides, which lie at the origin of multiferroicity.
The alkaline earth binary oxides adopt a simple rocksalt structure and form an important family of compounds because of their large presence in the earth's mantle and their potential use in microelectronic devices. In comparison to the class of multifunctional ferroelectric perovskite oxides, however, their practical applications remain limited and the emergence of ferroelectricity and related functional properties in simple binary oxides seems so unlikely that it was never previously considered. Here, we show using first-principles density functional calculations that ferroelectricity can be …
The magnetic phase transitions reported below 230 K in cupric oxide are analyzed theoretically at the macroscopic and microscopic levels. The incommensurate multiferroic and lock-in commensurate phases are shown to realize an inverted sequence of symmetry-breaking mechanisms with respect to the usual sequence occurring in low temperature multiferroic compounds. The higher temperature spin-spiral phase results from coupled order-parameters which decouple at the lock-in transition to the commensurate ground state phase. Expressing the order-parameters in function of the magnetic spins allows det…
GaFeO3, AlFeO3 and related oxides are ferrimagnetic exhibiting magnetodielectric effect. There has been no evidence to date for ferroelectricity and hence multiferroicity in these oxides. We have investigated these oxides as well as oxides of the composition Al1-x-yGaxFe1+yO3 (x = 0.2, y = 0.2) for possible ferroelectricity by carrying out pyroelectric measurements. These measurements establish the occurrence of ferroelectricity at low temperatures below the Nèel temperature in these oxides. They also exhibit significant magnetoelectric effect. We have tried to understand the origin of ferroel…
We demonstrate that ethylammonium copper chloride, (C2H5NH3)2CuCl4, a member of the hybrid perovskite family is an electrically polar and magnetic compound with dielectric anomaly around the Curie point (247 K). We have found large spontaneous electric polarization below this point accompanied with a color change in the sample. The system is also ferroelectric, with large remnant polarization (37μC/cm2) that is comparable to classical ferroelectric compounds. The results are ascribed to hydrogen-bond ordering of the organic chains. The coexistence of ferroelectricity and dominant ferromagnetic…
This article reviews the polarizability model and its applications to ferroelectric perovskite oxides. The motivation for the introduction of the model is discussed and nonlinear oxygen ion polarizability effects and their lattice dynamical implementation outlined. While a large part of this work is dedicated to results obtained within the self-consistent-phonon approximation (SPA), also nonlinear solutions of the model are handled which are of interest to the physics of relaxor ferroelectrics, domain wall motions, incommensurate phase transitions. The main emphasis is to compare the results o…
Cubic structure is one of the most commonly found structures for oxides at high temperature. As the temperature is lowered only a handful of these oxides exhibit ferroelectricity which is rather surprising. In this paper, we use the example of YCrO3 (YCO), an incipient ferroelectric material to show that in most oxides there are two competing phenomenon -onset of ferroelectricity due to rotation of CrO6 octahedra and displacement of Y atom leading to suppression of ferroelectricity. This competition reveals that while the octahedral rotations favor a lower symmetry state, the Y atom displaceme…
There are two silver perovskite oxides: AgNbO3 and AgTaO3. AgNbO3 has a noncentrosymmetric group of Pmc21 at room temperature with a ferri-electric ordering of polarization. Such a ferri-electric state with small polarization can be changed into a ferroelectric state with very large polarization by a high electric field or by a chemical modification. The induced ferroelectric phase shows promising electromechanical response for applications in piezoelectric devices. In contrast, AgTaO3 is a quantum paraelectric, but ferroelectricity also can be induced through chemical substitution. The findin…
By performing first-principles calculations on four capacitor structures based on BaTiO3 and PbTiO3, we determine the intrinsic interfacial effects that are responsible for the destabilization of the polar state in thin-film ferroelectric devices. We show that, contrary to the established interpretation, the interfacial capacitance depends crucially on the local chemical environment of the interface through the force constants of the metal-oxide bonds, and is not necessarily related to the bulk screening properties of the electrode material. In particular, in the case of interfaces between AO-…
Advances in complex oxide heteroepitaxy have highlighted the enormous potential of utilizing strain engineering via lattice mismatch to control ferroelectricity in thin-film heterostructures. This approach, however, lacks the ability to produce large and continuously variable strain states, thus limiting the potential for designing and tuning the desired properties of ferroelectric films. Here, we observe and explore dynamic strain-induced ferroelectricity in SrTiO$_3$ by laminating freestanding oxide films onto a stretchable polymer substrate. Using a combination of scanning probe microscopy,…
Two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectricity has attracted extensive attention since its discovery in the monolayers of van der Waals materials. Here we show that 2D ferroelectricity induced by octahedral rotation distortion is widely present in the perovskite bilayer system through first-principles calculations. The perovskite tolerance factor plays a crucial role in the lattice dynamics and ground-state structure of the perovskite monolayers and bilayers, thus providing an important indicator for screening this hybrid improper ferroelectricity. Generally, the ferroelectric switching via an orthorho…
The realization of multiferroicity in 2D nanomaterials is crucially important for designing advanced nanoelectronic devices such as non-volatile multistate data storage. In this work, the coexistence of ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity is reported in monolayer SnTe system by transition metal (TM) doping. Based on first-principles calculations, the spontaneous spin polarization could be realized by TM doping in ferroelectric SnTe monolayer. In addition to in-plane ferroelectric polarization, the out-of-plane ferroelectric polarization emerges in Mn (Fe)-doped SnTe monolayer due to the intern…
We report on the growth and properties of high quality bicolor oxide superlattices, composed of two perovskites out of BaTiO3, CaTiO3, and SrTiO3. The artificially grown superlattices are structurally unique and have a macroscopically homogeneous phase, which is not feasible to recreate in bulk form. By artificial structuring, it is found that the polarization of such superlattices can be highly increased as compared to pseudo-binary ceramics with the same overall composition. Such strong enhancement in superlattice is attributed to newly-developed ionic motions of A-site cations at the hetero…
The possibility of multiferroicity arising from charge ordering in LuFe2O4 and structurally related rare earth ferrites is reviewed. Recent experimental work on macroscopic indications of ferroelectricity and microscopic determination of coupled spin and charge order indicates that this scenario does not hold. Understanding the origin of the experimentally observed charge and spin order will require further theoretical work. Other aspects of recent research in these materials, such as geometrical frustration effects, possible electric-field-induced transitions, or orbital order are also briefl…
Single-phase multiferroic materials that allow the coexistence of ferroelectric and magnetic ordering above room temperature are highly desirable, motivating an ongoing search for mechanisms for unconventional ferroelectricity in magnetic oxides. Here, we report an antisite defect mechanism for room temperature ferroelectricity in epitaxial thin films of yttrium orthoferrite, YFeO3, a perovskite-structured canted antiferromagnet. A combination of piezoresponse force microscopy, atomically resolved elemental mapping with aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and density…
We report studies of ferroelectricity in ultra-thin perovskite films with realistic electrodes. The results reveal stable ferroelectric states in thin films less than 10 Åthick with polarization normal to the surface. Under short-circuit boundary conditions, the screening effect of realistic electrodes and the influence of real metal/oxide interfaces on thin film polarization are investigated. Our studies indicate that metallic screening from the electrodes is affected by the difference in work functions at oxide surfaces. We demonstrate this effect in ferroelectric PbTiO$_3$ and BaTiO$_3$ fil…
Ferroelectric oxides have attracted much attention due to their wide range of applications, especially in electronic devices such as nonvolatile memories and tunnel junctions. As a result, the monolithic integration of these materials into silicon technology and its nanostructuration to develop alternative cost-effective processes are among the central points in current technology. In this work, we used a chemical route to obtain nanowire thin films of a novel Sr1+δMn8O16 (SMO) hollandite-type manganese oxide on silicon. Scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with crystallographic …
We used first-principles calculations to investigate the existence and origin of the ferroelectric in- stability in the ABF3 fluoro-perovskites. We find that many fluoro-perovskites have a ferroelectric instability in their high symmetry cubic structure, which is of similar amplitude to that commonly found in oxide perovskites. In contrast to the oxides, however, the fluorides have nominal Born effective charges, indicating a different mechanism for the instability. We show that the instability originates from ionic size effects, and is therefore in most cases largely insensitive to pressure a…
High-temperature electronic materials are in constant demand as the required operational range for various industries increases. Here we design $(A,A^\prime)B_2$O$_6$ perovskite oxides with [111] ``rock salt" $A$-site cation order and predict them to be potential high-temperature piezoelectric materials. By selecting bulk perovskites which have a tendency towards only out-of-phase $B$O$_6$ rotations, we avoid possible staggered ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transitions while also retaining non-centrosymmetric crystal structures necessary for ferro- and piezoelectricity. Using density fun…
The Jahn-Teller effect is a fascinating and ubiquitous phenomenon in modern quantum physics and chemistry. We propose a class of oxides with melilite structure Ba$_2$TGe$_2$O$_7$ (T=V,Ni) where Jahn-Teller distortions are the main responsibles for the appearance of electric polarization. At the hearth of the proposed mechanism lies the lack of inversion symmetry displayed by tetrahedrally coordinated transition-metal ions, which allows for the condensation of polar Jahn-Teller distortions, at odds with octahedral coordination typical of conventional ferroelectric oxides with perovskite structu…
We predict that ferroelectric phase can be induced by the strong intrinsic surface stress inevitably present under the curved surface in the high aspect ratio cylindrical nanoparticles of nonferroelectric binary oxides (BaO, EuO, MgO, etc). We calculated the sizes and temperature range of the ferroelectric phase in BaO nanowires. The analytical calculations were performed within Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory with phenomenological parameters extracted from the first principle calculations [E. Bousquet et al, Strain-induced ferroelectricity in simple rocksalt binary oxides. arXiv:0906.4235v1…
Electromechanical activity, remanent polarization states, and hysteresis loops in paraelectric TiO2 and SrTiO3 are observed. The coupling between the ionic dynamics and incipient ferroelectricity in these materials is analyzed using extended Ginsburg Landau Devonshire (GLD) theory. The possible origins of electromechanical coupling including ionic dynamics, surface-charge induced electrostriction, and ionically-induced ferroelectricity are identified. For the latter, the ionic contribution can change the sign of first order GLD expansion coefficient, rendering material effectively ferroelectri…
Oxide thin films exhibit versatile physical properties such as magnetism, ferroelectricity, piezoelectricity, metal-insulator transition (MIT), multiferroicity, colossal magnetoresistivity, switchable resistivity, etc. More importantly, the exhibited multifunctionality could be tuned by various external fields, which has enabled demonstration of novel electronic devices. In this article, recent studies of the multi-fields modulation of physical properties in oxide thin films have been reviewed. Some of the key issues and prospects about this field are also addressed.
Hafnium oxide (HfO2)-based ferroelectrics offer remarkable promise for memory and logic devices in view of their compatibility with traditional silicon CMOS technology, high switchable polarization, good endurance and thickness scalability. These factors have led to steep rise in research on this class of materials over the past number of years. At the same time, only a few reports on the direct sensing of nanoscale ferroelectric properties exist, with many questions remaining regarding the emergence of ferroelectricity in these materials. While piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) is ideally …
Multiferroic materials have attracted great interests but are rare in nature. In many transitional metal oxides, charge ordering and magnetic ordering coexist, so that a method of engineering charge-ordered materials into ferroelectric materials would lead to a large class of multiferroic materials. We propose a strategy for designing new ferroelectric or even multiferroic materials by inserting a spacing layer into each two layers of charge-ordered materials and artificially making a superlattice. One example of the model demonstrated here is the perovskite (LaFeO$_3$)$_2$/LaTiO$_3$ (111) sup…
We investigate the effect of polar Sr-O vacancy pairs on the electric polarization of SrMnO$_3$ (SMO) thin films using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This is motivated by indications that ferroelectricity in complex oxides can be engineered by epitaxial strain but also \textit{via} the defect chemistry. Our results suggest that intrinsic doping by cation and anion divacancies can induce a local polarization in unstrained non-polar SMO thin films and that a ferroelectric state can be stabilized below the critical strain of the stoichiometric material. This polarity is promoted by…
We elucidate the microscopic mechanism that causes a suppression of ferroelectricity and an enhancement of octahedral rotations in EuTiO3 from first principles. We find that the hybridization of the rare-earth Eu 4f states with the B-site Ti cation drives the system away from ferroelectricity. We also show that the magnetic order dependence of this hybridization is the dominant source of spin-phonon coupling in this material. Our results underline the importance of rare-earth f electrons on the lattice dynamics and stability of these transition metal oxides.
The first two-dimensional (2D) polymorphs of antimony dioxide, namely, $γ$-Sb$_2$O$_4$ and $δ$-Sb$_2$O$_4$, are predicted using the evolutionary algorithm combined with first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Out-of-plane ferroelectricity is found in $γ$-Sb$_2$O$_4$, while in-plane ferroelectricity is found in $δ$-Sb$_2$O$_4$. The predicted dipole moments of $γ$-Sb$_2$O$_4$ and $δ$-Sb$_2$O$_4$ phases are 36.63 and 14.96 eÅ, respectively, implying that they can be good candidates for making ferroelectric devices. The calculations show that doping with other group V elemen…
Multiferroic materials open up the possibility to design novel functionality in electronic devices, with low energy consumption. However, there are very few materials that show multiferroicity at room temperature, which is essential to be practically useful. AlxFe2-xO3 (x-AFO) thin films, belonging to the k-Al2O3 family are interesting because they show room temperature ferrimagnetism and have a polar crystal structure. However, it is difficult to realise its ferroelectric properties at room temperature, due to low resistivity of the films. In this work, we have deposited x-AFO (0.5 <= x <= 1)…
It has been recently suggested that the coexistence of ferroelectricity and Rashba-like spin-splitting effects due to spin-orbit coupling in a single material may allow for a non-volatile electric control of spin degrees of freedom. In the present work, we compared the structural and ferroelectric properties of tetragonal and rhombohedral phases of ferroelectric BiAlO$_3$ by means of density-functional calculations. In both phases, we carefully investigated Rashba and Dresselhaus effects, giving rise to spin-splitting in their bulk electronic structure, particularly near the conduction band mi…
Recent experiments demonstrated robust ferroelectricity in Mg-doped ZnO (ZMO) of the wurtzite structure, hinting at a promising strategy to substantially expand the list of ferroelectrics by doping conventional piezoelectrics. We investigate the origin of ferroelectricity in ZMO with first-principles density functional theory (DFT). The general argument that the Mg alloying could soften the ionic potential energy surface of ZMO for polarization reversal is overly simplified. Our DFT calculations reveal that even at a high Mg concentration, the energy difference ($ΔU$) between the polar and non…
Several defect configurations including oxygen vacancies have been investigated as possible origins of the reported room-temperature ferroelectricity of strontium titanate (STO) thin films [Appl. Phys. Letts. 91, 042908 (2007)]. First-principles calculations revealed that the Sr-O-O vacancy complexes create deep localized states in the band gap of SrTiO3 without affecting its insulating property. These results are in agreement with electronic structural changes determined from optical transmission and X-ray absorption measurements. This work opens the way to exploiting oxygen vacancies and the…
Fe doping into BaTiO3, stabilizes the paraelectric hexagonal phase in place of the ferroelectric tetragonal one [P. Pal et al. Phys. Rev. B, 101, 064409 (2020)]. We show that simultaneous doping of Bi along with Fe into BaTiO3 effectively enhances the magnetoelectric (ME) multiferroic response (both ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity) at room-temperature, through careful tuning of Fe valency along with the controlled-recovery of ferroelectric-tetragonal phase. We also report systematic increase in large dielectric constant values as well as reduction in loss tangent values with relatively mod…
The aim of this Chapter is to provide an account of recent advances in the first-principles modeling of ferroelectric oxide nanostructures. Starting from a microscopic description of ferroelectricity in bulk materials and considering then, successively, different kinds of nanostructures (films, multilayers, wires, and particles), we try to identify the main trends and to provide a coherent picture of the role of finite size effects in ferroelectric oxides.
Ferroic transition metal oxides, which exhibit spontaneous elastic, electrical, magnetic or toroidal order, exhibit functional properties that find use in ultrastable solid-state memories to sensors and medical imaging technologies. To realize multifunctional behavior, where one order parameter can be coupled to the conjugate field of another order parameter, however, requires a common microscopic origin for the long-range order. Here, we formulate a complete theory for a novel form of ferroelectricity, whereby a spontaneous and switchable polarization emerges from the destruction of an antife…
I show that a nonequilibrium paraelectric to ferroelectric transition can be induced using midinfrared pulses. This relies on a quartic $lQ_{\textrm{l$_z$}}^2Q_{\textrm{h$_x$}}^2$ coupling between the lowest ($Q_{\textrm{l$_z$}}$) and highest ($Q_{\textrm{h$_x$}}$) frequency infrared-active phonon modes of a paraelectric material. Density functional calculations show that the coupling constant $l$ is negative, which causes a softening of the $Q_{\textrm{l$_z$}}$ mode when the $Q_{\textrm{h$_x$}}$ mode is externally pumped. A rectification along the $Q_{\textrm{l$_z$}}$ coordinate that stabiliz…
