Using first principles calculations we show that several alkali lead halides potentially present collective ferroelectric polarization. This should occur at least at the nanoscale; it could be detected macroscopically provided it is not concealed by lattice vibrations in the temperature range of stability of the cubic perovskite phase. For potassium lead halides and for alkali lead fluorides, remarkably, the ferroelectric behavior turns hyper-ferroelectric, suggesting a more robust ferroelectric polarization in spite of depolarization potentials induced by charge accumulation on surfaces or interfaces.
The electronic and structural properties of Li$B$O$_3$ ($B$=V, Nb, Ta, Os) are investigated via first-principles methods. We show that Li$B$O$_3$ belong to the recently proposed hyperferroelectrics, i.e., they all have unstable longitudinal optic phonon modes. Especially, the ferroelectric-like instability in the metal LiOsO$_3$, whose optical dielectric constant goes to infinity, is a limiting case of hyperferroelectrics. Via an effective Hamiltonian, we further show that, in contrast to normal proper ferroelectricity, in which the ferroelectric instability usually comes from long-range coulo…
Electronic structure and lattice dynamics calculations on thallium halides show that the Born effective charges in these compounds are more than twice larger than the nominal ionic charges. This is a result of cross-band-gap hybridization between Tl-p and halogen-p states. The large Born charges cause giant splitting between longitudinal and transverse optic phonon modes, bringing the lattice close to ferroelectric instability. Our calculations indeed show spontaneous lattice polarization upon lattice expansion starting at 2%. It is remarkable that the apparently ionic thallium halides with a …
The realization of multiferroics in nanostructures, combined with a large electric dipole and ferromagnetic ordering, could lead to new applications, such as high-density multi-state data storage. Although multiferroics have been broadly studied for decades, ferromagnetic ferroelectricity is rarely explored, especially in two-dimensional (2D) systems. Here we report the discovery of 2D ferromagnetic ferroelectricity in layered transition metal halide systems. On the basis of first-principles calculations, we reveal that charged CrBr3 monolayer exhibits in-plane multiferroicity, which is ensure…
Methylammonium lead iodide, as related organometal halide perovskites, emerged recently as a particularly attractive material for photovoltaic applications. The origin of its appealing properties is sometimes assigned to its potential ferroelectric character, which remains however a topic of intense debate. Here, we rationalize from first-principles calculations how the spatial arrangement of methylammonium polar molecules is progressively constrained by the subtle interplay between their tendency to bond with the inorganic framework and the appearance of iodine octahedra rotations inherent to…
Halide perovskite semiconductors respond to electric fields in a way that varies across time and length scales. We discuss the microscopic processes that give rise to the macroscopic polarization of these materials, ranging from the optical and vibrational response to the transport of ions and electrons. The strong frequency dependence of the dielectric permittivity can be understood by separating the static dielectric constant into its constituents, including the orientional polarization due to rotating dipoles, which connects theory with experimental observations. The controversial issue of …
Naturals and synthetic perovskites are widely used functional materials thanks to their particular physical properties, such as superconductivity, ferroelectricity and photo-activity. Many of these properties are related to static or dynamic motion of octahedral units; Yet a full understanding of the relationships between perovskite crystal structure, chemical bonding and physical properties is currently missing. Several studies indicate the existence of dynamic disorder generated by anharmonic motion of octahedral units e.g. in halide perovskite structures. In this work, we derive all possibl…
Organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskites have ignited tremendous interests for photovoltaic applications. However, their nonlinear optical response has not been studied although many of these structures lack the centrosymmetry and exhibit ferroelectricity. In this work, we employ our developed large-scale parallel, first-principles simulation tool (ArchNLO) to explore second-order nonlinear optical properties of a typical family of organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskites, CH3NH3MX3 (M= Ge, Sn, Pb; X=Cl, Br, I). We find that these hybrid perovskites exhibit second harmonic generation and…
My study is about Halide Perovskites (HaPs) and focuses the fundamental structural, chemical and dielectric properties of HaPs in reference to their PV-related properties. * I present my main research model: HaP single-crystals - their growth and characterization; * I start by exploring the bond nature of HaPs using Nanoindentation and Solid-State NMR techniques. * I explore the 'deformation potential' of the structure and show that its low and positive value in HaPs strongly suggests a pronounced 'defect tolerance'. * I explore the scattering mechanism of charges in the soft and highly polari…
Inorganic metal halide perovskites are promising materials for next-generation technologies due to a plethora of unique physical properties, many of which cannot be observed in the oxide perovskites. On the other hand, the search for ferroelectricity and multiferroicity in lead-free inorganic halide perovskites remains a challenging research topic. Here, we experimentally show that cubic fluoroperovskites exhibit proximity to incipient ferroelectrics, which manifested in the softening of the low-frequency polar phonons in the Brillouin zone center at cooling. Furthermore, we reveal the couplin…
