Organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskites have ignited tremendous interests for photovoltaic applications. However, their nonlinear optical response has not been studied although many of these structures lack the centrosymmetry and exhibit ferroelectricity. In this work, we employ our developed large-scale parallel, first-principles simulation tool (ArchNLO) to explore second-order nonlinear optical properties of a typical family of organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskites, CH3NH3MX3 (M= Ge, Sn, Pb; X=Cl, Br, I). We find that these hybrid perovskites exhibit second harmonic generation and linear electro-optic effect. The nonlinear optical effects are strongly influenced by the types and positions of cations/anions and corresponding band gaps. Particularly, the distorted cubic phase, which is essentially triclinic, of CH3NH3SnI3 shows significant second harmonic generation and electro-optic effect, which are comparable with those widely used materials, such as GaAs. These second-order optical properties of organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskites and their low-temperature, solution-based fabrication pave the way for achieving and implementing nonlinear optical devices with low cost.
This work is aimed to study mixed-cation (hybrid methyl ammonium plus inorganic cations) halide perovskites using first principles Density Functional Theory (DFT) formalism in order to find their potential applications in perovskite based photovoltaics. This is an addition to the two previous studies performed by the author on high-throughput screening of hybrid halide and inorganic halide perovskites. This work involves mixing certain amounts of the inorganic cation to the organic site (methyl ammonium) and study the electronic structure of the resultant. 63 perovskites have been simulated in…
Organic-inorganic halide perovskite solar cells have recently attracted much attention due to their low-cost fabrication, flexibility, and high-power conversion efficiency. The reduction from three- to two-dimension (2D) promises an exciting opportunity to tune the electronic properties of organic-inorganic halide perovskites. Here, we propose first-principles density-functional theory based route to study the effect of reduced dimensionality, impurity doping, and heterostructure engineering on energy stability, band-gap and transport properties of 2D hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskite…
Organic-inorganic coupling in the hybrid lead-halide perovskite is a central issue in rationalizing the outstanding photovoltaic performance of these emerging materials. Here we compare and contrast the evolution of structure and dynamics of the hybrid CH3NH3PbBr3 and the inorganic CsPbBr3 lead-halide perovskites with temperature, using Raman spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Results reveal a stark contrast between their order-disorder transitions, abrupt for the hybrid whereas smooth for the inorganic perovskite. X-ray diffraction observes an intermediate incommensurate phase…
Perovskite solar cells with record power conversion efficiency are fabricated by alloying both hybrid and fully inorganic compounds. While the basic electronic properties of the hybrid perovskites are now well understood, key electronic parameters for solar cell performance, such as the exciton binding energy of fully inorganic perovskites, are still unknown. By performing magneto transmission measurements, we determine with high accuracy the exciton binding energy and reduced mass of fully inorganic CsPbX$_3$ perovskites (X=I, Br, and an alloy of these). The well behaved (continuous) evolutio…
Lead-free halide double perovskites with the formula of quaternary A$_2^+$B'B'$^{3+}$X$_6^-$ have recently attracted intense interest as alternatives to lead-halide-perovskite-based optoelectronic materials for their non-toxicity and enhanced chemical and thermodynamic stability. However, the understanding of intrinsic defect properties and their effects on carrier transport and Fermi level tuning is still limited. In this paper, we show that, by exploring the phase diagram of a halide double perovskite, one can control the effects of intrinsic defects on carrier trapping and Fermi level pinni…
Solar cells are semiconductor devices that generate electricity through charge generation upon illumination. For optimal device efficiency, the photo-generated carriers must reach the electrical contact layers before they recombine. A deep understanding of the recombination process and transport behavior is essential to design better devices. Halide perovskite solar cells are commonly made of a polycrystalline absorber layer, but there is no consensus on the nature and role of grain boundaries. This review paper concerns theoretical approaches for the investigation of extended defects. We intr…
We have investigated nonlinear refraction in all-inorganic halide perovskites, the CsPbBr$_3$ and CsPbBr$_{1.5}$I$_{1.5}$ nanosheet and quantum dot colloids in toluene, by a novel beam deflection technique using near-resonant continuous wave lasers. The nonlinear refraction and its time-evolution measured here have originated from thermal lensing effect. Nonlinear behaviour of heat transport in terms of intensity dependent thermal diffusion rate has been observed. Effects of convective heat flow have been measured at high intensities. Quantum dots have higher nonlinear refraction as compared t…
Inorganic-organic perovskites semiconductors are becoming increasingly interesting due to their remarkable optical properties, such as a high photoluminescence quantum yield and the possibility to show optical gain in a broad range of wavelengths. We have here simulated microcavities that embed MaPBI3 and 2D hybrid organic inorganic perovskite semiconductors by sandwiching such active layers between periodic, aperiodic and disordered photonic structures. We have carefully considered the refractive index dispersion of all the materials employed, such silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide and the pe…
Instabilities relating to cooperative octahedral tilting is common in materials with perovskite structures, and in particular in the sub class of halide perovskites. In this work, the energetics of octahedral tilting in the inorganic metal halide perovskites CsPbI$_3$ and CsSnI$_3$ are investigated using first-principles density functional theory calculations. Several low energy paths between symmetry equivalent variants of the stable orthorhombic (\textit{Pnma}) perovskite variant are identified and investigated. The results are in favor of the presence of dynamic disorder in the octahedral t…
The zero-dimensional (0D) metal halides comprise periodically distributed and isolated metal-halide polyhedra, which act as the smallest inorganic quantum systems and can accommodate quasi-localized Frenkel excitons. These excitons exhibit unique photophysics including broadband photon emission, huge Stokes shift, and long decay lifetime. The polyhedra can have different symmetries due to the coordination degree of the metal ions. Little is known about how the polyhedron type affects the characteristics of the 0D metal halide crystals. We synthesize and comparatively study three novel kinds of…
2D organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (2DHPs) consist of alternating anionic metal-halide and cationic organic layers. They have widely tunable structural and optical properties. We review the role of the organic cation in defining the structural and optical properties of 2DHPs through example lead iodide 2DHPs. Even though excitons reside in the metal halide layers, the organic and inorganic frameworks cannot be separated-they must be considered as a single unit to fully understand the photophysics of 2DHPs. We correlate cation-induced distortion and disorder in the inorganic lattice with t…
Epitaxial III-V semiconductor heterostructures are key components in modern microelectronics, electro-optics and optoelectronics. With superior semiconducting properties, halide perovskite materials are rising as promising candidates for coherent heterostructure devices. In this report, spinodal decomposition is proposed and experimentally implemented to produce epitaxial double heterostructures in halide perovskite system. Pristine epitaxial mixed halide perovskites rods and films were synthesized via Van der Waals epitaxy by chemical vapor deposition method. At room temperature, photon was a…
Organohalide perovskite with a variety of surface structures and morphologies have shown promising potential owing to the choice of the type of heterostructure dependent stability. We systematically investigate and discuss the impact of 2-dimensional molybdenum-disulphide (MoS2), molybdenum-diselenide (MoSe2), tungsten-disulphide (WS2), tungsten-diselenide (WSe2), boron- nitiride (BN) and graphene monolayers on band-gap and energy stability of organic-inorganic halide perovskites. We found that MAPbI3ML deposited on BN-ML shows room temperature stability (-25 meV~300K) with an optimal bandgap …
Structural phase transitions as a function of temperature dictate the structure--functionality relationships in many technologically important materials. Harmonic Hamiltonians have proven successful in predicting the vibrational properties of many materials. However, they are inadequate for modeling structural phase transitions in crystals with potential energy surfaces that are either strongly anharmonic or no\ n-convex with respect to collective atomic displacements or homogeneous strains. In this paper we develop a framework to express highly anharmonic first-principles potential energy sur…
Instability of hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites hinders their development for photovoltaic applications. First-principle calculations are used for evaluation of a decomposition reaction enthalpy of hybrid halide perovskites, which is linked to experimentally observed degradation of device characteristics. However, simple criteria for predicting stability of halide perovskites are lacking since Goldschmidt's tolerance and octahedral geometrical factors do not fully capture formability of those perovskites. In this paper, we extend the Born-Haber cycle to partition the reaction enthal…
Using density-functional theory calculations, we analyze the optical absorption properties of lead (Pb)-free metal halide perovskites (AB$^{2+}$X$_3$) and double perovskites (AB$^+$B$^{3+}$X$_6$) (A = Cs or monovalent organic ion, B$^{2+}$ = non-Pb divalent metal, B$^+$ = monovalent metal, B$^{3+}$ = trivalent metal, X = halogen). We show that, if B$^{2+}$ is not Sn or Ge, Pb-free metal halide perovskites exhibit poor optical absorptions because of their indirect bandgap nature. Among the nine possible types of Pb-free metal halide double perovskites, six have direct bandgaps. Of these six typ…
Corner-shared ABX$_3$ perovskites have long featured prominently in solid-state chemistry and condensed matter physics. Still, the joint understanding of their two main subgroups-halides and oxides-has not been fully developed. Indeed, unlike the case that compounds having a single repeated motif ("monomorphous"), certain cubic perovskites can manifest a non-thermal distribution of local motifs ("polymorphous networks"). Such intrinsic deformations can include positional degrees of freedom. Unlike thermal motion, such intrinsic distortions do not time-average to zero. The present study compare…
With the rapid evolution of lead halide perovskite solar cells, there are considerable evidences that the mobile ions strongly impact their properties. However, except the activation energy, the other properties of ionic migration are mostly explored with first principle calculations. Here we investigate the migration of halide ion (vacancy) in lead bromide perovskite single crystalline microplates. In contrast to conventional studies with external bias voltages, we introduce built-in potentials into the microplates via low-energy electron beams and study the corresponding ionic migrations. By…
Understanding the intrinsic charge transport in organolead halide perovskites is essential for the development of high-efficiency photovoltaics and other optoelectronic devices. Despite the rapid advancement of the organolead halide perovskite in photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications, the intrinsic charge carrier transport in these materials remains elusive partly due to the difficulty of fabricating electrical devices and obtaining good electrical contact. Here, we report the fabrication of organolead halide perovskite microplates with monolayer graphene as low barrier electrical conta…
Perovskite stability is of the core importance and difficulty in current research and application of perovskite solar cells. Nevertheless, over the past century, the formability and stability of perovskite still relied on simplified factor based on human knowledge, such as the commonly used tolerance factor t. Combining machine learning (ML) with first-principles density functional calculations, we proposed a strategy to firstly calculate the decomposition energies, considered to be closely related to thermodynamic stability, of 354 kinds halide perovskites, establish the machine learning rela…
One of the most significant features of lead-halide perovskites are their ability to have comparably slow recombination despite the fact that these materials are mostly processed from solution at room temperature. The slow recombination allows achieving high open-circuit voltages when the lead-halide perovskite layers are used in solar cells. This perspective discusses the state of the art of our understanding and of experimental data with regard to recombination and open-circuit voltages in lead-halide perovskites. A special focus is put onto open questions that the community has to tackle to…
In a combined theoretical and experimental work, we investigate X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure (XANES) spectroscopy of the I $L_3$ and the Pb $M_5$ edges of the methylammonium lead iodide ($\textrm{MAPbI}_3$) hybrid inorganic-organic perovskite and its binary phase $\textrm{PbI}_2$. The absorption onsets are dominated by bound excitons with sizable binding energies of a few hundred meV and pronounced anisotropy. The spectra of both materials exhibit remarkable similarities, suggesting that the fingerprints of core excitations in $\textrm{MAPbI}_3$ are essentially given by its inorganic c…
Structural disorder is common in metal-halide perovskites and important for understanding the functional properties of these materials. First-principles methods can address structure variation on the atomistic scale, but they are often limited by the lack of structure-sampling schemes required to characterize the disorder. In this work, structural disorder in the benchmark inorganic halide perovskites CsPbI$_3^{}$ and CsPbBr$_3^{}$ is computationally studied in terms of the three octahedral-tilting angles. The consequent variation in energetics and properties are described by three-dimensional…
Inorganic lead halide perovskite materials have attracted great attention recently due to their potential for greater thermal stability compared to hybrid organic perovskites. However, the high processing temperature to convert from the non-perovskite phase to cubic perovskite phase in many of these systems has limited their application in flexible optoelectronic devices. Here, we report a room temperature processed inorganic PSC based on CsPbI2Br as the light harvesting layer. By combing this composition with key precursor solvents, we show that the inorganic perovskite film can be prepared b…
Halide perovskites have recently gained widespread attention for their exceptional optoelectronic properties which have been illuminated by extensive spectroscopic investigations. In this article, nanophotonic surface-engineering using soft-lithography has been used to reproduce nanostructures with enhanced functionalities. A non-invasive optical technique based on Raman and photolumines-cence (PL) spectroscopy is employed to investigate the interactive effect of the thermal and optical behaviour in surface-patterned hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskite thin films. The thermophys-ical pr…
Based on first-principles calculations, we show that chemically active metal ns2 lone pairs play an important role in exciton relaxation and dissociation in low-dimensional halide perovskites. We studied excited-state properties of several recently discovered luminescent all-inorganic and hybrid organic-inorganic zero-dimensional (0D) Sn and Pb halides. The results show that, despite the similarity in ground-state electronic structure between Sn and Pb halide perovskites, the chemically more active Sn2+ lone pair leads to stronger excited-state structural distortion and larger Stokes shift in …
We show that the decomposition of caesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals under continuous X-ray illumination depends on the surface ligand. For oleic acid/oleylamine, we observe a fast decay accompanied by the formation of elemental lead and halogen. Upon surface functionalization with a metal porphyrin derivate, the decay is markedly slower and involves the disproportionation of lead to Pb0 and Pb3+. In both cases, the decomposition is preceded by a contraction of the atomic lattice, which appears to initiate the decay. We find that the metal porphyrin derivative induces a strong surface…
The structural, electrical, optical, and mechanical characteristics of the lead-free halide double perovskites Cs2NaTlX6 X = F, Cl, Br are calculated by utilizing PBE functional within generalized gradient approximation GGA under the context of density functional theory DFT.The structural properties such as lattice parameter, cell volume, total energy, bulk modulus, pressure derivative, and tolerance factor are computed at equilibrium. The electronic density of states reveals the semiconducting nature of the compound and the band structure exhibits the nature of the band gap to be direct.HSE06 …
The acoustic phonons in the organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites have been reported to have anomalously short lifetimes over a large part of the Brillouin zone. The resulting shortened mean free paths of the phonons have been implicated as the origin of the low thermal conductivity. We apply neutron spectroscopy to show that the same acoustic phonon energy linewidth broadening (corresponding to shortened lifetimes) occurs in the fully inorganic CsPbBr$_{3}$ by comparing the results on the organic-inorganic CH$_{3}$NH$_{3}$PbCl$_{3}$. We investigate the critical dynamics near the three zon…
Using first principles calculations we show that several alkali lead halides potentially present collective ferroelectric polarization. This should occur at least at the nanoscale; it could be detected macroscopically provided it is not concealed by lattice vibrations in the temperature range of stability of the cubic perovskite phase. For potassium lead halides and for alkali lead fluorides, remarkably, the ferroelectric behavior turns hyper-ferroelectric, suggesting a more robust ferroelectric polarization in spite of depolarization potentials induced by charge accumulation on surfaces or in…
Photo-induced phase-segregation in mixed halide perovskite MAPb(BrxI1-x)3 is investigated in the full compositional range by correlative X-ray diffraction and photo-luminescence experiments.
We present an experimental and theoretical viewpoint on the electronic carrier mobilities of typical hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs). While these mobilities are often quoted as high, a review of them shows that although otherwise the semiconducting properties of HOIPs are impressively good, mobilities of HOIPs used in most solar cells are actually not that high. This is especially apparent if they are compared to those of inorganic semiconductors used in other high efficiency solar cells. We critically examine possible causes and focus on electron-lattice coupling mechanisms that …
Hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites with the prototype material of CH$_{3}$NH$_{3}$PbI$_{3}$ have recently attracted intense interest as low-cost and high-performance photovoltaic absorbers. Despite the high power conversion efficiency exceeding 20% achieved by their solar cells, two key issues -- the poor device stabilities associated with their intrinsic material instability and the toxicity due to water soluble Pb$^{2+}$ -- need to be resolved before large-scale commercialization. Here, we address these issues by exploiting the strategy of cation-transmutation to design stable inorg…
Organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites (HaPs) are intensively studied for their light-harvesting properties. Owing to the interplay between strong electron-electron interaction and spin-orbit coupling (SOC), their quantitative theoretical description is still a challenge as evidenced by the wide variety of results available in literature. Here, various methodologies for computing their electronic structure are evaluated, also accounting for SOC. More specific, the GW approach as well as variants of the hybrid functionals PBE0 and HSE are at the center of our investigations. For both functi…
Halide perovskites are semiconductors that exhibit sharp optical absorption edges and small Urbach energies allowing for efficient collection of sunlight in thin-film photovoltaic devices. However, halide perovskites also exhibit large nuclear anharmonic effects and disorder, which is unusual for efficient optoelectronic materials and difficult to rationalize in view of the small Urbach energies that indicate a low amount of disorder. To address this important issue, the disorder potential induced for electronic states by the nuclear dynamics in various paradigmatic halide perovskites is studi…
Lead-free double perovskite halides are emerging optoelectronic materials that are alternatives to lead-based perovskite halides. Recently, single-crystalline double perovskite halides were synthesized, and their intriguing functional properties were demonstrated. Despite such pioneering works, lead-free double perovskite halides with better crystallinity are still in demand for applications to novel optoelectronic devices. Here, we realized highly crystalline Cs2AgBiBr6 single crystals with a well-defined atomic ordering on the microscopic scale. We avoided the formation of Ag vacancies and t…
We develop techniques to study the temperature dependent localization, thermalization, and the effects of phonon scattering on the excitons in halide perovskites from the analysis of the emission spectra. The excitonic Urbach edge, when inferred from the low energy tails of the temperature dependent luminescence spectra, is shown to be sensitive to the electron distribution and thermalization. A method to observe the Urbach focus is devised for halide perovskites where the temperature dependence of the excitonic gap is anomalous. The value of the zero-point bandgap renormalization is inferred …
Halide perovskites exhibit slow rates of non-radiative electron-hole recombination upon illumination. Chu et al. [Sci. Adv. 6 7, eaaw7453 (2020)] use the results of first-principles simulations to argue that this arises from the nature of the crystal vibrations and leads to a breakdown of Shockley-Read-Hall theory. We highlight flaws in their methodology and analysis of carrier capture by point defects in crystalline semiconductors.
Surface-defect passivation is key to achieving high photoluminescence quantum yield in lead halide perovskite nanocrystals. However, in perovskite light-emitting diodes these surface ligands also have to enable balanced charge injection into the nanocrystals to yield high efficiency and operational lifetime. In this respect, alkaline halides have been reported to passivate surface trap states and increase the overall stability of perovskite light emitters. On the one side, the incorporation of alkaline ions into the lead halide perovskite crystal structure is considered to counterbalance catio…
Organic-inorganic halide perovskites have been intensively re-investigated due to their applications, yet the opto-electronic function of the organic cation remains unclear. Through organic-selective resonant Auger electron spectroscopy measurements on well-defined single crystal surfaces, we find evidence for electronic coupling in the unoccupied states between the organic and inorganic sub-lattices of the prototypical hybrid perovskite, which is contrary to the notion based on previous studies that the organic cation is electronically inert. The coupling is relevant for electron dynamics in …
The discovery of double perovskites A2B(I)B(III)X6 (A=monovalent cation; B(I)/B(III) = metal cation; X = halogen) as Pb(II)-free alternatives has attracted widespread attention, making it possible to introduce d-block metal cations (e.g., d0 and d10) into halide perovskites. However, at present, there are quite limited insights into the underlying bonding orbitals for d-block metal cation-based halide perovskites. Here, we present an orbital engineering strategy to construct two-dimensional (2D) electronic structures in three-dimensional (3D) halide perovskites by rationally controlling the d …
Despite their puzzling vibrational characteristics that include strong signatures of anharmonicity and thermal disorder already around room temperature, halide perovskites exhibit favorable optoelectronic properties for applications in photovoltaics and beyond. Whether these vibrational properties are advantageous or detrimental to their optoelectronic properties remains, however, an important open question. Here, this issue is addressed by investigation of the {finite-temperature optoelectronic properties} in the prototypical cubic CsPbBr$_3$, using first-principles molecular dynamics based o…
The unprecedented structural flexibility and diversity of inorganic frameworks of layered hybrid halide perovskites (LHHPs) rise up a wide range of useful optoelectronic properties thus predetermining the extraordinary high interest to this family of materials. Nevertheless, the influence of different types of distortions of their inorganic framework on key physical properties such as band gap has not yet been quantitatively identified. We provided a systematic study of the relationships between LHHPs' band gaps and six main structural descriptors of inorganic framework, including interlayer d…
Perovskite solar cells have shown remarkable efficiencies beyond 22%, through organic and inorganic cation alloying. However, the role of alkali-metal cations is not well-understood. By using synchrotron-based nano-X-ray fluorescence and complementary measurements, we show that when adding RbI and/or CsI the halide distribution becomes homogenous. This homogenization translates into long-lived charge carrier decays, spatially homogenous carrier dynamics visualized by ultrafast microscopy, as well as improved photovoltaic device performance. We find that Rb and K phase-segregate in highly conce…
Here we develop a microscopic approach aimed at the description of a suite of physical effects related to carrier transport in, and the optical properties of, halide perovskites. Our theory is based on the description of the nuclear dynamics to all orders and goes beyond the common assumption of linear electron-phonon coupling in describing the carrier dynamics and band gap characteristics. When combined with first-principles calculations and applied to the prototypical MAPbI$_{3}$ system, our theory explains seemingly disparate experimental findings associated with both the charge-carrier mob…
Bulk quantum materials based on zero-dimensional (0D) lead-free organic tin halide perovskites have been developed for the first time, which give broadband Gaussian-shaped and strongly Stokes shifted emissions with quantum efficiencies of up to near-unity at room temperature due to excited state structural reorganization.
The low ionization energy of an $A$ site molecule is a very important factor, which determines the thermodynamical stability of $A$PbI$_3$ hybrid halide perovskites, while the size of the molecule governs the stable phase at room temperature and, eventually, the bandgap. It is challenging to achieve both a low ionization energy and the reasonable size for the PbI$_3$ cage to circumvent the stability issue inherent to hybrid halide perovskites. Here we propose a new three-membered charged ring radical, which demonstrates a low ionization energy that renders a good stability for its correspondin…
Ni et al. report minimum bulk trap densities of 10^11 cm-3 and 1-4 orders change in interfacial trap densities derived from drive-level capacitance profiling of lead halide perovskites. From basic electrostatic arguments, we show that such bulk trap densities cannot be resolved for a p-i-n perovskite solar cell for the reported layer thicknesses, while the apparent interfacial charge densities are a consequence of the geometrical capacitance and of charge injection into the perovskite layer.
We predict the structural, electronic and optic properties of the inorganic Ge-based halide perovskites AGeX3 (A = Cs, Rb; X = I, Br, Cl) by using first-principles method. In particular, absolute electronic energy band levels are calculated using two different surface terminations of each compound, reproducing the experimental band alignment.
