For general gravitational collapse, inside the black-hole region, singularities $(r=0)$ may arise. In this article, we aim to answer how strong these singularities could be. We analyse the behaviours of various geometric quantities. In particular, we show that in the most singular scenario, the Kretschmann scalar obeys polynomial blow-up upper bounds $O(1/r^N)$. This improves previously best-known double-exponential upper bounds $O\big(\exp\exp(1/r)\big)$. Our result is sharp in the sense that there are known examples showing that no sub-polynomial upper bound could hold. Finally we do a case study on perturbations of the Schwarzschild solution.
We study the black hole interiors of spacetimes arising from gravitational collapse in the spherically symmetric Einstein-scalar field setting, and we investigate the precise blow-up rates of curvature and mass at the spacelike singularity near timelike infinity. We show in particular that the Kretschmann scalar blows up faster than in the Schwarzschild setting, due to mass inflation. Moreover, the blow-up rate is not constant and converges to the Schwarzschild rate towards timelike infinity and it depends on the precise late-time polynomial behaviour of the scalar field along the event horizo…
The electric field increases toward infinity in the narrow region between closely adjacent perfect conductors as they approach each other. Much attention has been devoted to the blow-up estimate, especially in two dimensions, for the practical relevance to high stress concentration in fiber-reinforced elastic composites. In this paper, we establish optimal estimates for the electric field associated with the distance between two spherical conductors in $n-${dimensional spaces for $n \geq 2$}. {The novelty of these estimates is that they explicitly describe the dependency of the blow-up rate on…
We study the ground states of a 2D focusing non-linear Schrödinger equation with rotation and harmonic trapping. When the strength of the interaction approaches a critical value from below, the system collapses to a profile obtained from the optimizer of a Gagliardo--Nirenberg interpolation inequality. This was established before in the case of fixed rotation frequency. We extend the result to rotation frequencies approaching, or even equal to, the critical frequency at which the centrifugal force compensates the trap. We prove that the blow-up scenario is to leading order unaffected by such a…
We show that the kernel of the linearization of the blow-up problem at the regular part of the interface that separates segregated BECs is one-dimensional, generated by translations in the normal direction to the interface. This useful non-degeneracy property was previously known only in one and two dimensions.
We study the inhomogeneous linear system which arises in the higher order asymptotic expansion of the wave functions of multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates, across the regular part of the interface, in the case of segregation.
In this paper, under spherical symmetry we prove a trapped surface formation criterion for the Einstein-Maxwell-charged scalar field system. We generalize an approach introduced by Christodoulou for studying the Einstein-scalar field. In appendix, with double null foliation we also reprove Christodoulou's result and for Minkowskian incoming characteristic initial data, we improve Christodoulou's bound.
The paper is concerned with the Bose-Einstein condensate described by the attractive Gross-Pitaevskii equation in R 2 , where the external potential is unbounded from below. We show that when the interaction strength increases to a critical value, the Gross-Pitaevskii minimizer collapses to one singular point and we analyze the details of the collapse exactly up to the leading order.
We prove by using an iteration argument some blow-up results for a semilinear damped wave equation in generalized Einstein-de Sitter spacetime with a time-dependent coefficient for the damping term and power nonlinearity. Then, we conjecture an expression for the critical exponent due to the main blow-up results, which is consistent with many special cases of the considered model and provides a natural generalization of Strauss exponent. In the critical case, we consider a non-autonomous and parameter-dependent Cauchy problem for a linear ODE of second-order, whose explicit solutions are deter…
In this article, we investigate the blow-up for local solutions to a semilinear wave equation in the generalized Einstein - de Sitter spacetime with nonlinearity of derivative type. More precisely, we consider a semilinear damped wave equation with a time-dependent and not summable speed of propagation and with a time-dependent coefficient for the linear damping term with critical decay rate. We prove in this work that the results obtained in a previous work, where the damping coefficient takes two particular values $0$ or $2$, can be extended for any positive damping coefficient. In the blow-…
In this article, we are interested in the Einstein vacuum equations on a Lorentzian manifold displaying $\mathbb{U}(1)$ symmetry. We identify some freely prescribable initial data, solve the constraint equations and prove the existence of a unique and local in time solution at the $H^3$ level. In addition, we prove a blow-up criterium at the $H^2$ level. Our main objective is to provide a framework adapted to the study of high-frequency solutions to the Einstein vacuum equations done in a forthcoming paper by Huneau and Luk. As a consequence we work in an elliptic gauge, particularly adapted t…
Under spherical symmetry, with double-null coordinates $(u,v)$, we study the gravitational collapse of the Einstein--scalar field system with a positive cosmological constant. The spacetime singularities arise when area radius $r$ vanishes and they are spacelike. We derive new quantitative estimates, obtain polynomial blow-up rates $O(1/r^N)$ for various quantities, and extend the results in [5] by the first author and Zhang and the arguments in [3] by the first author and Gajic to the cosmological settings. In particular, we sharpen the estimates of $r\partial_u r$ and $r\partial_v r$ in [5] …
A degenerate fourth-order parabolic equation modeling condensation phenomena related to Bose-Einstein particles is analyzed. The model is a Fokker-Planck-type approximation of the Boltzmann-Nordheim equation, only keeping the leading order term. It maintains some of the main features of the kinetic model, namely mass and energy conservation and condensation at zero energy. The existence of local-in-time weak solutions satisfying a certain entropy inequality is proven. The main result asserts that if a weighted $L^1$ norm of the initial data is sufficiently large and the initial data satisfies …
In this paper we derive the equations characterizing the boundary layer which describes the transition of the distribution function of a gas of weakly interacting bosons to the distribution function of the gas in the presence of a Bose-Einstein condensate. To this end, we first rederive the classical Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation taking as a starting point the dynamics of a system of many weakly interacting quantum particles. The solutions of the Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation yield blow-up in finite time. Near the blow-up time the approximations used to derive the Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation break do…
In this paper, we study the future causally geodesically complete solutions of the spherically symmetric Einstein-scalar field system. Under the a priori assumption that the scalar field $ϕ$ scatters locally in the scale-invariant bounded-variation (BV) norm, we prove that $ϕ$ and its derivatives decay polynomially. Moreover, we show that the decay rates are sharp. In particular, we obtain sharp quantitative decay for the class of global solutions with small BV norms constructed by Christodoulou. As a consequence of our results, for every future causally geodesically complete solution with suf…
The goal of this paper is to exhibit a critical mass phenomenon occuring in a model for cell self-organization via chemotaxis. The very well known dichotomy arising in the behavior of the macroscopic Keller-Segel system is derived at the kinetic level, being closer to microscopic features. Indeed, under the assumption of spherical symmetry, we prove that solutions with initial data of large mass blow-up in finite time, whereas solutions with initial data of small mass do not. Blow-up is the consequence of a virial identity and the existence part is derived from a comparison argument. Spherical…
We study development of singularities for the spherically symmetric Yang-Mills equations in $d+1$ dimensional Minkowski spacetime for $d=4$ (the critical dimension) and $d=5$ (the lowest supercritical dimension). Using combined numerical and analytical methods we show in both cases that generic solutions starting with sufficiently large initial data blow up in finite time. The mechanism of singularity formation depends on the dimension: in $d=5$ the blowup is exactly self-similar while in $d=4$ the blowup is only approximately self-similar and can be viewed as the adiabatic shrinking of the ma…
The Einstein-Vlasov-Fokker-Planck system describes the kinetic diffusion dynamics of self-gravitating particles within the Einstein theory of general relativity. We study the Cauchy problem for spatially homogeneous and isotropic solutions and prove the existence of both global solutions and solutions that blow-up in finite time depending on the size of certain functions of the initial data. We also derive information on the large-time behavior of global solutions and toward the singularity for solutions which blow-up in fine time. Our results entail the existence of a phase of decelerated exp…
We show that the spherically symmetric Einstein-scalar-field equations for wave-like decaying initial data at null infinity have unique local solutions and unique global solutions for small initial data. We also generalize Christodoulou's global generalized solutions to the wave-like decaying initial data. We emphasize that this decaying condition is sharp.
We prove a stable singularity formation result for solutions to the Einstein-scalar field and Einstein-stiff fluid systems. Our results apply to small perturbations of the spatially flat FLRW solution with topology $(0,\infty) \times \mathbb{T}^3.$ The FLRW solution models a spatially uniform scalar-field/stiff fluid evolving in a spacetime that expands towards the future and that has a "Big Bang" singularity at $\lbrace 0 \rbrace \times \mathbb{T}^3,$ where its curvature blows up. We place data on a Cauchy hypersurface $Σ_1'$ that are close to the FLRW data induced on $\lbrace 1 \rbrace \time…
We revisit and generalize, to the Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs system, previous results of D. Christodoulou and D. Chae concerning global solutions for the Einstein-scalar field and the Einstein-Maxwell-Higgs equations. The novelty of the present work is twofold. For one thing the assumption on the self-interaction potential is improved. For another thing explanation is furnished why the solutions obtained here and those proved by Chae for the Einstein-Maxwell-Higgs decay more slowly than those established by Christodoulou in the case of self-gravitating scalar fields. Actually this latter phenom…
We study the evolution of a self-gravitating compressible fluid in spherical symmetry and we prove the existence of weak solutions with bounded variation for the Einstein-Euler equations of general relativity. We formulate the initial value problem in Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates and prescribe spherically symmetric data on a characteristic initial hypersurface. We introduce here a broad class of initial data which contain no trapped surfaces, and we then prove that their Cauchy development contains trapped surfaces. We therefore establish the formation of trapped surfaces in weak solution…
We consider a characteristic initial value problem, with initial data given on a future null cone, for the Einstein (massless) scalar field system with a positive cosmological constant, in Bondi coordinates. We prove that, for small data, this system has a unique global classical solution which is causally geodesically complete to the future and decays polynomially in radius and exponentially in Bondi time, approaching the de Sitter solution.
In this paper, we initiate the study of the asymptotically AdS initial-boundary value problem for the Einstein-massless Vlasov system with $Λ<0$ in spherical symmetry. We will establish the existence and uniqueness of a maximal future development for the characteristic initial-boundary value problem in the case when smooth initial data are prescribed on a future light cone $\mathcal{C}^{+}$ emanating from a point at $\{r=0\}$ and a reflecting boundary condition is imposed on conformal infinity $\mathcal{I}$. We will then prove a number of continuation criteria for smooth solutions of the spher…
This paper continues the investigation of the formation of naked singularities in the collapse of collisionless matter initiated in [RV]. There the existence of certain classes of non-smooth solutions of the Einstein-Vlasov system was proved. Those solutions are self-similar and hence not asymptotically flat. To obtain solutions which are more physically relevant it makes sense to attempt to cut off these solutions in a suitable way so as to make them asymptotically flat. This task, which turns out to be technically challenging, will be carried out in this paper. [RV] A. D. Rendall and J. J. L…
I study a class of global, causal geodesically complete solutions to the spherically symmetric Einstein scalar field (SSESF) system . Extending results of Luk-Oh (Quantitative Decay Rates for Dispersive Solutions to the Einstein-Scalar Field System in Spherical Symmetry, arXiv:1402.2984), Luk-Oh-Yang (Solutions to the Einstein-Scalar-Field System in Spherical Symmetry with Large Bounded Variation Norms, arXiv:1605.03893), I provide new bounds controlling higher derivatives of both the metric components of the solution and the scalar field itself for large data solutions to SSESF. Moreover, by …
We study the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to the linear wave equation on cosmological spacetimes with Big Bang singularities and show that appropriately rescaled waves converge against a blow-up profile. Our class of spacetimes includes Friedman-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetimes with negative sectional curvature that solve the Einstein equations in presence of a perfect irrotational fluid with $p=(γ-1)ρ$. As such, these results are closely related to the still open problem of past nonlinear stability of such FLRW spacetimes within the Einstein scalar field equations. In contrast…
We are concerned with spherically symmetric solutions of the Euler equations for multidimensional compressible fluids, which are motivated by many important physical situations. Various evidences indicate that spherically symmetric solutions of the compressible Euler equations may blow up near the origin at certain time under some circumstance. The central feature is the strengthening of waves as they move radially inward. A longstanding open, fundamental question is whether concentration could form at the origin. In this paper, we develop a method of vanishing viscosity and related estimate t…
We consider a gradient estimate for a conductivity problem whose inclusions are two neighboring insulators in three dimensions. When inclusions with an extreme conductivity (insulators or perfect conductors) are closely located, the gradient can be concentrated in between inclusions and then becomes arbitrarily large as the distance between inclusions approaches zero. The gradient estimate in between insulators in three dimensions has been regarded as a challenging problem, while the optimal blow-up rates in terms of the distance were successfully obtained for the other extreme conductivity pr…
