Under spherical symmetry, with double-null coordinates $(u,v)$, we study the gravitational collapse of the Einstein--scalar field system with a positive cosmological constant. The spacetime singularities arise when area radius $r$ vanishes and they are spacelike. We derive new quantitative estimates, obtain polynomial blow-up rates $O(1/r^N)$ for various quantities, and extend the results in [5] by the first author and Zhang and the arguments in [3] by the first author and Gajic to the cosmological settings. In particular, we sharpen the estimates of $r\partial_u r$ and $r\partial_v r$ in [5] and prove that the spacelike singularities where $r(u,v)=0$ are $C^{1,1/3}$ in $(u,v)$ coordinates. As an application, these estimates also give quantitative blow-up upper bounds of fluid velocity and density for the hard-phase model of the Einstein-Euler system under irrotational assumption. Near the timelike infinity, we also generalize the theorems in [3] by linking the precise blow-up rates of the Kretschmann scalar to the exponential Price's law along the event horizon. In cosmological settings, this further reveals the mass-inflation phenomena along the spacelike singularities for the first time.
Starting from the Hawking--Page solutions, we consider the corresponding Lorentzian cone metrics. These represent cone interior scale-invariant vacuum solutions, defined in the chronological past of the scaling origin. We extend the Lorentzian Hawking--Page solutions to the cone exterior region in the class of $(4+1)$-dimensional scale-invariant vacuum solutions with an $SO(3)\times U(1)$ isometry, using the Kaluza--Klein reduction and the methods of Christodoulou. We prove that each Lorentzian Hawking--Page solution has extensions with a null curvature singularity, extensions with a spacelike…
An interpretation of spacelike singularities in string theory uses target space duality to relate the collapsing Schwarzschild geometry near the singularity to an inflationary cosmology in dual variables. An appealing picture thus results whereby gravitational collapse seeds the formation of a new universe.
We develop an extension of Bohmian mechanics by defining Bohm-like trajectories for quantum particles in a curved background space-time containing a spacelike singularity. As an example of such a metric we use the Schwarzschild metric, which contains two spacelike singularities, one in the past and one in the future. Since the particle world lines are everywhere timelike or lightlike, particles can be annihilated but not created at a future spacelike singularity, and created but not annihilated at a past spacelike singularity. It is argued that in the presence of future (past) spacelike singul…
We present the conformally 1+3 Hubble-normalized field equations together with the general total source equations, and then specialize to a source that consists of perfect fluids with general barotropic equations of state. Motivating, formulating, and assuming certain conjectures, we derive results about how the properties of fluids (equations of state, momenta, angular momenta) and generic spacelike singularities affect each other.
It is shown that for small, spherically symmetric perturbations of asymptotically flat two-ended Reissner-Nordström data for the Einstein-Maxwell-real scalar field system, the boundary of the dynamic spacetime which evolves is globally represented by a bifurcate null hypersurface across which the metric extends continuously. Under additional assumptions, it is shown that the Hawking mass blows up identically along this bifurcate null hypersurface, and thus the metric cannot be extended twice differentiably, in fact, cannot be extended in a weaker sense characterized at the level of the Christo…
Due to quantum fluctuations, a black hole of mass $M$ represents an average over an ensemble of black hole geometries with angular momentum. This observation is apparently at odds with the fact that the curvature singularity inside a rotating black hole is timelike, while the one inside a non-rotating black hole is spacelike. Is the average of timelike singularities really spacelike? We use the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula to introduce a microcanonical ensemble for spin fluctuations and show that the onset of quantum gravity is always spacelike. We discuss the impact of this result on si…
We extend earlier numerical and analytical considerations of the conformally invariant wave equation on a Schwarzschild background from the case of spherically symmetric solutions, discussed in Class. Quantum Grav. 34, 045005 (2017), to the case of general, nonsymmetric solutions. A key element of our approach is the modern standard representation of spacelike infinity as a cylinder. With a decomposition into spherical harmonics, we reduce the four-dimensional wave equation to a family of two-dimensional equations. These equations can be used to study the behaviour at the cylinder, where the s…
We study the black hole interiors of spacetimes arising from gravitational collapse in the spherically symmetric Einstein-scalar field setting, and we investigate the precise blow-up rates of curvature and mass at the spacelike singularity near timelike infinity. We show in particular that the Kretschmann scalar blows up faster than in the Schwarzschild setting, due to mass inflation. Moreover, the blow-up rate is not constant and converges to the Schwarzschild rate towards timelike infinity and it depends on the precise late-time polynomial behaviour of the scalar field along the event horizo…
Colliding Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar fields need not necessarily doomed to become in a spacelike singularity. Examples are given in which null singularities emerge as intermediate stages between a spacelike singularity and a regular horizon.
This is a review of recent progress concerning generic spacelike singularities in general relativity. For brevity the main focus is on singularities in vacuum spacetimes, although the connection with, and the role of, matter for generic singularity formation is also commented on. The paper describes recent developments in two areas and show how these are connected within the context of the conformally Hubble-normalized state space approach. The first area is oscillatory singularities in spatially homogeneous cosmology and the connection between asymptotic behaviour and heteroclinic chains. The…
The singularity theorems of Penrose, Hawking, and Geroch predict the existence of incomplete inextendible causal geodesics in a wide range of physically adequate spacetimes modeling the gravitational collapse of stars and the expanding universe. Here, using results on spacetime extensions, it is shown that if a suitable low regular form of the strong cosmic censor hypothesis holds, then parallelly propagated blow-up of either the tidal force or frame-drag part of the curvature must occur in ``generic'' timelike geodesically incomplete maximal Cauchy developments.
We attempt to understand the fate of spacelike gravitational singularities in string theory via the quantum stress tensor for string matter in a fixed background. We first approximate the singularity with a homogeneous anisotropic background and review the minisuperspace equations describing the evolution of the scale factors and the dilaton. We then review and discuss the behavior of large strings in such models. In a simple model which expands isotropically for a finite period of time we compute the number density of strings produced by quantum pair production and find that this number, and …
Conjugate points play an important role in the proofs of the singularity theorems of Hawking and Penrose. We examine the relation between singularities and conjugate points in FLRW spacetimes with a singularity. In particular we prove a theorem that when a non-comoving, non-spacelike geodesic in a singular FLRW spacetime obeys conditions (39) and (40), every point on that geodesic is part of a pair of conjugate points. The proof is based on the Raychaudhuri equation. We find that the theorem is applicable to all non-comoving, non-spacelike geodesics in FLRW spacetimes with non-negative spatial…
Recent numerical simulations have found that the Cauchy horizon inside spherical charged black holes, when perturbed nonlinearly by a self-gravitating, minimally-coupled, massless, spherically-symmetric scalar field, turns into a null weak singularity which focuses monotonically to $r=0$ at late times, where the singularity becomes spacelike. Our main objective is to study this spacelike singularity. We study analytically the spherically-symmetric Einstein-Maxwell-scalar equations asymptotically near the singularity. We obtain a series-expansion solution for the metric functions and for the sc…
For general gravitational collapse, inside the black-hole region, singularities $(r=0)$ may arise. In this article, we aim to answer how strong these singularities could be. We analyse the behaviours of various geometric quantities. In particular, we show that in the most singular scenario, the Kretschmann scalar obeys polynomial blow-up upper bounds $O(1/r^N)$. This improves previously best-known double-exponential upper bounds $O\big(\exp\exp(1/r)\big)$. Our result is sharp in the sense that there are known examples showing that no sub-polynomial upper bound could hold. Finally we do a case …
We consider space-times which are asymptotically flat at spacelike infinity, i^0. It is well known that, in general, one cannot have a smooth differentiable structure at i^0, but have to use direction dependent structures. Instead of the oftenly used C^{>1}-differentiabel structure, we suggest a weaker differential structure, a C^{1^+} structure. The reason for this is that we have not seen any completions of the Schwarzschild space-time which is C^{>1} in both spacelike and null directions at {i^0}. In a C^{1^+} structure all directions can be treated equal, at the expense of logarithmic sing…
We review the intimate connection between (super-)gravity close to a spacelike singularity (the "BKL-limit") and the theory of Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebras. We show that in this limit the gravitational theory can be reformulated in terms of billiard motion in a region of hyperbolic space, revealing that the dynamics is completely determined by a (possibly infinite) sequence of reflections, which are elements of a Lorentzian Coxeter group. Such Coxeter groups are the Weyl groups of infinite-dimensional Kac-Moody algebras, suggesting that these algebras yield symmetries of gravitational theorie…
An important question in mathematical relativity theory is that of the nature of spacetime singularities. The equations of general relativity, the Einstein equations, are essentially hyperbolic in nature and the study of spacetime singularities is naturally related to blow-up phenomena for nonlinear hyperbolic systems. These connections are explained and recent progress in applying the theory of hyperbolic equations in this field is presented. A direction which has turned out to be fruitful is that of constructing large families of solutions of the Einstein equations with singularities of a si…
Recently Nolan constructed a spherically-symmetric spacetime admitting a spacelike curvature singularity with a regular C^0 metric. We show here that this singularity is in fact weak.
There exist Kruskal like coordinates for the Reissner-Nordstrom (RN) black hole spacetime which are regular at coordinate singularities. Non existence of such coordinates for the extreme RN black hole spacetime has already been shown. Also the Carter coordinates available for the extreme case are not manifestly regular at the coordinate singularity, therefore, a numerical procedure was developed to obtain free fall geodesics and flat foliation for the extreme RN black hole spacetime. The Kottler-Schwarzschild-de Sitter (KSSdS) spacetime geometry is similar to the RN geometry in the sense that,…
Recent developments concerning oscillatory spacelike singularities in general relativity are taking place on two fronts. The first treats generic singularities in spatially homogeneous cosmology, most notably Bianchi types VIII and IX. The second deals with generic oscillatory singularities in inhomogeneous cosmologies, especially those with two commuting spacelike Killing vectors. This paper describes recent progress in these two areas: in the spatially homogeneous case focus is on mathematically rigorous results, while analytical and numerical results concerning generic behavior and so-calle…
The existence of a singularity by definition implies a preferred scale--the affine parameter distance from/to the singularity of a causal geodesic that is used to define it. However, this variable scale is also captured by the expansion along the geodesic, and this can be used to obtain a regularized state space picture by means of a conformal transformation that factors out the expansion. This leads to the conformal `Hubble-normalized' orthonormal frame approach which allows one to translate methods and results concerning spatially homogeneous models into the generic inhomogeneous context, wh…
It was believed that when gravitational, electromagnetic and scalar waves interact, a spacelike curvature singularity or Cauchy horizon develops because of mutual focusing. We show with an exact solution that the collision of Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar fields, in contrast to previous studies, predicts singularities on null surfaces and that this is a transition phase between spacelike singularities and regular horizons. Divergences of tidal forces in the null singularities is shown to be weaker relative to the spacelike ones. Using the local isometry between colliding plane waves and black holes,…
Many central problems in geometry, topology, and mathematical physics lead to questions concerning the long-time dynamics of solutions to ordinary and partial differential equations. Examples range from the Einstein field equations of general relativity to quasilinear reaction-advection-diffusion equations of parabolic type. Specific questions concern the convergence to equilibria, the existence of periodic, homoclinic, and heteroclinic solutions, and the existence and geometric structure of global attractors. On the other hand, many solutions develop singularities in finite time. The singular…
We study the dynamics near big crunch singularities produced in asymptotic AdS cosmologies using gauge/gravity duality. The dual description consists of a constant mass deformation of ABJM theory on de Sitter space and is well-defined and stable for small deformations. We identify the critical deformation where the theory becomes unstable at weak and at strong coupling. Using spacelike geodesics anchored on the boundary we compute two-point correlators of ABJM operators of large dimensions. Near the critical deformation a second saddle point contribution enters, in which the spacelike geodesic…
Numerical simulations of the approach to the singularity in spacetimes with stiff fluid matter are presented here. The spacetimes examined have no symmetries and can be regarded as representing the general behavior of singularities in the presence of such matter. It is found that the singularity is spacelike and that as it is approached, the spacetime dynamics becomes local and non-oscillatory.
The BKL conjecture, stated in the 60s and early 70s by Belinski, Khalatnikov and Lifshitz, proposes a detailed description of the generic asymptotic dynamics of spacetimes as they approach a spacelike singularity. It predicts complicated chaotic behaviour in the generic case, but simpler non-chaotic one in cases with symmetry assumptions or certain kinds of matter fields. Here we construct a new class of four-dimensional vacuum spacetimes containing spacelike singularities which show non-chaotic behaviour. In contrast with previous constructions, no symmetry assumptions are made. Rather, the m…
We study black holes produced by the collapse of a spherically symmetric charged scalar field in asymptotically flat space. We employ a late time expansion and show decaying fluxes of radiation through the event horizon imply the black hole must contain a null singularity on the Cauchy horizon and a central spacelike singularity.
We present a complete study of the geodesics around naked singularities in AdS$_3$, the three-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime. These stationary spacetimes, characterized by two conserved charges --mass and angular momentum--, are obtained through identifications along spacelike Killing vectors with a fixed point. They are interpreted as massive spinning point particles, and can be viewed as three-dimensional analogues of cosmic strings in four spacetime dimensions. The geodesic equations are completely integrated and the solutions are expressed in terms of elementary functions. We classif…
Using the revised Komar-Tomimatsu approach, we derive Smarr mass formulas for stationary axisymmetric solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations containing line singularities (defects) on the polar axis. In terms of the rod structure associated with Weyl representation of the metric, the horizons and the defects are formally similar up to differences due to their timelike/spacelike character. We derive (previously unknown or incorrect) horizon and global Smarr formulas in presence of a Newman-Unti-Tamburino (NUT) parameter. To avoid the divergence of the Komar angular momentum of semi-infinit…
We construct a large class of vacuum solutions of the Einstein equations without any symmetries and with controlled asymptotics near a timelike singularity. The solutions are obtained by a Fuchs analysis of the equations which evolve the metric in a spacelike direction. We further observe that the changes of signs of some of the terms (walls) in the associated Hamiltonian invalidate the "cosmological billards" heuristic arguments for existence of singularities of mixmaster type in the current context.
We construct a class of analytic solutions with two free parameters to the five-dimensional Einstein field equations, which represents the collision of two timelike 3-branes. We study the local and global properties of the spacetime, and find that spacelike singularities generically develop after the collision, due to the mutual focus of the two branes. Non-singular spacetime can be constructed only in the case where both of the two branes violate the energy conditions.
The spacetime singularities inside realistic black holes are sometimes thought to be spacelike and strong, since there is a generic class of solutions (BKL) to Einsteins equations with these properties. We show that null, weak singularities are also generic, in the following sense: there is a class of vacuum solutions containing null, weak singularities, depending on 8 arbitrary (up to some inequalities) analytic initial functions of 3 spatial coordinates. Since 8 arbitrary functions are needed (in the gauge used here) to span the generic solution, this class can be regarded as generic.
